STANDS ON ALL SURFACES
A super strong greenhouse base is an essential requisite of any superior greenhouse, offering a solid foundation whether erecting on soil, concrete or paving. The sturdy 4”/10cm H Harrod Superior aluminium base plinth is an integral part of our frames and allows our greenhouses to be sited on a number of surfaces. Many inferior greenhouse models can only be sited on a hardstanding but our greenhouse range is designed for paving, concrete or soil, ideally in a sheltered spot away from prevailing winds.
To site the greenhouse directly onto soil, secure the supplied heavy duty stainless steel ground anchors to the aluminium base plinth and the glazing bar, for greater rigidity. This will save hundreds of pounds building a special base for the greenhouse. The supplied J bolts can be concreted into the soil to provide extra rigidity against winter storms.
Equally, the greenhouse can be sited on an existing hardstanding area with stainless steel ground anchors that secure with the supplied expansion bolts. The expansion bolts let you secure the greenhouse to concrete so you can lay your own paving slabs down the centre of the greenhouse, creating a pathway and giving excess water a drain away through shingle surrounding the paving. Either way the robust aluminium frame will be secure against wind damage.

HEAVY DUTY EAVES BRACING
A. BLINDS
Each Harrod Superior Greenhouse is supplied with a set of sophisticated grey external roller blinds on one side of the roof that are hugely beneficial in reducing the heat and scorching to delicate plants from as early as February onwards. Protecting your greenhouse externally rather than internally has two main advantages. Even with shade netting a greenhouse can still overheat as the sun’s rays have already reached the greenhouse and raised the internal temperature. An exterior blind stops the sun’s rays hitting the greenhouse glass, whilst also offering shade. Covering one side of the roof, the blinds are very neat in appearance and simple to operate with a supplied reach pole. Cords and pulleys aren’t necessary and drilling isn’t needed. The blinds are built to last and sit unobtrusively retracted on the greenhouse roof ridge when not in use. In tests, external blinds reduced the midday sun by 10 degrees centigrade!
B. HANGING BASKET RAILS
Inferior greenhouse models avoid hanging any extra unnecessary weight from the roof. The superior strength of the Harrod greenhouse aluminium frame allows two strong hanging basket rails to be fitted to the roof, providing the perfect place to hang floral or trailing tomato baskets whilst making use of every inch of greenhouse growing space and therefore freeing up space on your staging.
C. LOW THRESHOLD AND WIDE DOOR(S)
The no step, low threshold doors prevent tripping and allow perfect access for wheelchairs and wheelbarrows, whilst retaining the strong integral base round the greenhouse base for extra strength. If the greenhouse is being erected on a hardstanding area an optional stainless steel ramp is available. The 6ft wide model comes with a 2 foot wide single door. On greenhouses 8ft wide or larger, 2 x 2ft (4ft opening) is provided. If the greenhouse is being erected on a hardstanding area an optional stainless steel ramp is available.
D. GUTTER AND DOWNPIPES
The strong eaves sections (up to 130% heavier) are supplied with heavy duty braces and allow the large integral gutters to collect a greater amount of rainwater. At nearly twice the weight of other gutters, the incorporated box section also helps to improve rigidity. The extra strength provided by the eaves and large gutters also means stronger downpipes. The downpipes (30mm rigid pipes) are supplied with sufficient fittings to direct rainwater into water butts.

Recent winters have seen stronger winds and storms putting greenhouse frame strengths to the test. Cheaper models using flimsy frames have failed the winter test and collapsed under the strain or blown away. We are so confident in the strength of our Harrod Superior Aluminium Greenhouse frames that we happily sat five men on the apex weighing nearly half a tonne! We purposely build our aluminium frames much heavier than any of our competitors, the ridge is up to 50% thicker, the glazing bars and door sides are up to 30% thicker and the eaves are up to 130% heavier. A number of heavy duty 3mm thick glazing bars are used throughout the framework to add significantly to its strength - 3 are used on every roof bay at 2ft intervals, 2 at the eaves and a longer one at the ridge. In addition a heavy duty glazing bar is used at the ridge of every greenhouse. We also add the following elements to increase the overall strength –
• Robust braces fitted to every ridge and eave bar
• Heavy duty glazing bar at the rear
• A thick bar halfway along the sides and roof
• Two robust braces on the eaves and longer braces on the eaves of each roof bay
• 4mm toughened glass strong enough to hold the weight of a van, 33% thicker than other models in the market
STATURE
We build all our Harrod Superior Greenhouses to a maximum height of 5ft 5” to the eaves, a lot taller than competitor models. This provides extra growing height for tall plants such as tomatoes and cucumbers, enough height for hanging baskets and keeps plants away from glass to prevent scorching. Experts recommend ordering a greenhouse in the size larger than you anticipate needing as it is easy to fill up quickly. Our Harrod Superior Greenhouse range is available up to 12ft wide x 18ft long so you are sure to find a size to meet your requirements. For maximum height we recommend our 8ft wide models as the ridge is 8ft 4”, the tallest we are aware of in the market place!
TOUGHENED GLASS
Large pane toughened glass offers strength and extra insulation and doesn’t overlap. The 4mm toughened float glass (not weaker horticultural glass) used in the Harrod Superior Greenhouses is also safer for family gardens as it is 33% thicker than standard greenhouse glass so less likely to break during family games. Toughened glass is also safer because it shatters into blunt crystals not dangerous shards.
GLAZING SYSTEM
To further enhance the strength of our aluminium greenhouse frames, each one of our individual panes of glass locks into place along its total length using a squeegee fin. The soft rubber edge of the squeegee fin seals the glass against rain and wind. Competitor greenhouses use caps or glazing beads to lock each pane of glass in place, replacing the usual W clips for aesthetic reasons rather than to provide extra strength.

Inferior greenhouses use small or large pane glazing which allows the frame to distort. The extra strength provided by the Harrod Superior Glazing System prevents the roof and the sides of the greenhouse becoming distorted by wind as they always remain square.

UNRIVALLED VENTILATION
Greenhouses are very prone to overheating so we have made sure that the Harrod Superior Greenhouse range has more ventilation included that any other model on the market! The total ventilation footprint is the same area as a third of the greenhouse floor space which is quite a challenge and one which none of our competition manages to achieve. This required the production of unique roof vents twice as large as standard models in order to achieve this.
A top quality greenhouse will also provide excellent air circulation to prevent moist stagnant air encouraging disease. The more air you have above your seedlings the better the growth as temperatures fluctuate less. The climate is automatically controlled by a combination of double/triple vents, Bayliss autovents and at least two 5 bladed louvre vents ensuring fresh air can circulate and cool. Bayliss autovents are included in each of our models as they are well known for being super sensitive to temperature change. Controlling the internal greenhouse temperature far quicker and more accurately than we ever could, even the slightest overhead cloud will quickly begin to close the roof autovents. The roof vents remain shut in strong winds thanks to the double spring that holds them shut. Alternatively you can disconnect the autovent for periods of forecasted high wind using the unique bracket to lock the roof vent safely shut. A 6ft x 8ft greenhouse comes with two large double roof vents controlled by autovents and two 5 blade louvres vents for air circulation. This level of ventilation is normally applicable for a greenhouse twice this size!

Sometimes there is only a small existing space to fit a greenhouse into but you don’t want to compromise on quality or features. Our Harrod WIDTH LENGTH Superior Greenhouse range starts at a compact 6ft x 6ft size, perfect for smaller sized gardens or existing smaller spaces and comes with all the features you would expect from our larger models. A compact greenhouse is more likely to overheat so our 6ft width range has unparalleled ventilation and air circulation levels in the form of autovents, 5 blade louvre vents and single, double or triple roof vents. These ventilation and air circulation levels are normally only available in greenhouses twice this size!
8 FOOT WIDE
First time greenhouse buyers often choose a 6 x 8 but find they are bursting at the seams within a year of installation. We would recommend an 8 x 10 greenhouse as a first purchase as you will have ample growing room and only use 2ft more area than a 6 x 8. Our 8 foot wide range has 2 x 2ft wide doors and extra height on the ridge and eaves. With over 43 square foot of ventilation, this range has a far higher specification than any of our competition.
For experienced gardeners an 8 x 12 foot greenhouse is the most popular choice and the 8 x 12 foot Harrod Superior Greenhouse features won’t disappoint. Our standard features (2 x 2ft wide, integral heavy duty base, automatic roof vent openers, glazing beads instead of wire clips, toughened glass in large pane size) are all charged as extra by our competitors. We also use premium strength aluminium T section for the eave and ridge braces and the two 12ft hanging basket rails.

The Superior 8x14 foot model is large enough for 4 x 5 blade louvre vents and 8 autovents as it provides 8 extra square feet of roof ventilation, almost 3 times more ventilation than our competitors equivalent size model.
10 AND 12 FOOT WIDE
The sturdy, well built 10 and 12 foot wide models recently introduced to our range have proved very popular with schools and professional gardeners because the greenhouse specification at this size is unbeatable in the market place. The extra 2 foot of garden space used for this model is more than made up for by the return on space as there is now room for side staging with middle staging (single for 10ft or double for 12ft) or a 4 foot wide raised bed in the middle, increasing the growing area by 50% Schools and colleges often order this size greenhouse as it safely allows enough space for student groups to garden at once, using the twin paths either side of the raised bed or central staging.
A unique feature on our 10 and 12 foot greenhouses is our new heavy duty gutter/eave section. This manages 65% more rainwater than other guttering and adds additional strength to the greenhouse structure. The base is also enhanced with new greenhouse base stiffeners, made from stainless steel and included with all 10 and 12 foot models. The stainless steel stiffeners provide an extra strong means of securing the greenhouse down to soil or concrete. A Harrod Essential Greenhouse Tools Kit comprises glass sucker (recommended to manoeuvre glass safely and easily into the framework) a glazing paddle (use with a rubber mallet to tap glazing beads into place - saves sore thumbs), a nut spinner, 7mm and 4.5mm drill bits and safety goggles for use whilst handling the glass.

CUSTOMISED STAGING AND SHELVING
STRENGTH
In tests we compared the strength of our 4ft staging to that of a leading DIY superstore. Our competitor’s models of staging bowed with the weight of 1 x 200 litre bale of compressed peat whereas our model happily held 6 x 200 litre bales of compressed peat without showing signs of strain. What’s the secret to our staging strength? The Harrod Superior Greenhouse staging uses a separate framework rather than relying on aluminium trays to provide structure and support. We use 3mm thick “T” Bar aluminium for the framework (twice the size of other models and by nature, stronger in its shape than L shaped sections). Our trays then sit within the staging framework and can be removed altogether to grow tomatoes or
cucumbers through the framework, using the framework as support. The Harrod Superior Greenhouse staging can also be retrofitted to greenhouses that haven’t been purchased from us as they are made to fit most common sized greenhouses in the market.

Our 2 tier freestanding greenhouse staging features removable top trays made from stainless steel which have been folded over for extra rigidity and to prevent sharp edges. The trays can be filled with capillary matting or pea shingle which is excellent for drainage and provides a moist mini climate around your plants. The trays can be flipped to provide a flat surface to work from and have open corners so excess water can drain away. The bottom tier is slatted with double vacuum, Protim preservative treated wood for long life providing drainage for pots and trays. The staging measures 60cm/24” deep x 80cm/32” high and is available in 3 lengths- 1.2m/4ft, 1.8m/6ft and 2.4m/8ft. Trays and slats are only interchangeable on 4ft staging and not on 6ft or 8ft staging.
HARROD INTEGRAL STAGING
Providing a tidy and well-organised growing space, our integral super strong staging framework is even fitted with feet to prevent it descending into the soil or gravel in your greenhouse. We have positioned the support legs so they lean backwards, giving clear access to the floor for wheelchair users and extra space for gardeners wanting to sit at a height adjustable bench to sow, plant up or pot on. This is possible due to the strength of the tubular section used for the staging framework which doesn’t rely on the greenhouse frame for its support. The support legs can also be fixed to the sides of the greenhouse for extra strength.
Integral staging is available at eye level height (1ft/30cm depth) or low level height (2ft/60cm depth). The shelves are two different depths so they readily sit above each other whilst the smaller shelf is still deep enough to hold a seed tray. The slats on the staging are 10cm apart which allows for drainage. Supplied in foot lengths, simply order the amount to achieve the length required, (e.g. for a 6ft length change the order quantity to 6 when ordering on our website). To achieve all-round greenhouse staging, eye/ low level integral staging can be fitted down the longest length and freestanding staging or integral shelving can be placed along the back wall.
HARROD SLATTED SHELVING
Fitted slatted shelves enhance your greenhouse growing space even further, freeing up space on your staging by providing a home for your sundries. The 10” slatted shelves can also hold pots and seed trays, and are available in two lengths - 4ft and 6ft. The shelves can sit next to each other end to end to maximise space. Use a 4ft length shelf in a 6ft greenhouse and 6ft length shelf in a 8ft model, etc.
