JAMES GARNER’S TRIBUTE TO JOHNNY CASH 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF FOLSOM PRISON CONCERT It’s only fitting that the Harris Center offer tribute to Johnny Cash in 2018 — the 50th anniversary of his legendary recording in Folsom Prison. For the occasion, James Garner and his band honor Johnny’s legacy with strong conviction and stunning accuracy, capturing the sound of the Tennessee Three down to the boom-chicka-boom. Special guests for the evening include Gene Beley, who as a young reporter recorded the original concert from the audience, and Tara Cash, who asked her father in 1995 to write down his childhood memories. His gift to her — a handwritten book about his growing up poor in Arkansas — was published in 2014.

After an enthusiastic sold-out show last January, the Harris Center had to invite him back! This producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist is one of the most internationally successful and influential Brazilian artists of all time, with 40 albums (many of which went gold or platinum) and three Grammy® Awards.

In 2012, his Sergio Mendes & Brasil ’66 LP was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame. A feature documentary about him as well as a new album are in the works for 2018. Plus, to kick off the year, he’ll be appearing up close at the intimate Harris Center. Don’t miss him!

MASTER OF SWING FEATURING KEN PEPLOWSKI

It was January 16, 1938 at Carnegie Hall — the hallowed venue for “respectable” classical music. There, Benny Goodman’s band played swing music for the first time, with one of the earliest racially-integrated jazz groups. The Harris Center joins Capital Public Radio in paying tribute to this historic moment as renowned clarinetist Ken Peplowski joins the Sacramento Jazz Orchestra, performing highlights from the famous concert. Peplowski will also lead a quartet (as Goodman did) during a spotlighted section of the concert with Ehud Asherie, “a master of swing and stride” (New Yorker) on piano and the “exquisite” (Jazz Times) Chuck Redd on vibes.

Two of the finest roots music fiddle players on the planet — Michael Doucet and Tom Rigney — are joining forces for a series of live performances in Northern California and making a stop at the Harris Center in Folsom! Featured in Season 11 of America’s Got Talent, Japan’s ElevenPlay is a dance company that incorporates advanced technologies directly into their performances, including drones, iPads, lasers and other digital technology. “ The three dancers and their accompanying drones put on a mesmerizing and eerie display…The result is stunning,” writes Hyperallergic. Nerdist put it more simply: “... pure talent, ingenuity, and beauty.” The group performed during the opening act of Lady Gaga’s 2014 world tour and the group’s choreographer, Mikiko, is renowned for having choreographed for the Japanese metal group Babymetal; the girl group Sakura Gakuin; and the pop group Perfume.

Each became icons at the creative forefront of the 1970s “Hawaiian Renaissance” movement that brought language, music, hula, art, and all aspects of Hawaiian culture back to their central place in the life of the Islands, and have continued to lead the way for over four decades.

NIYAZ featuring Azam Ali

THE FOURTH LIGHT PROJECT AN IMMERSIVE MULTI-MEDIA EXPERIENCE Seamlessly blending poetry and folk songs from their native Iran with rich, acoustic instrumentation and state-of-the-art electronics, Niyaz is “an evolutionary force in contemporary Middle Eastern music” (Huffington Post). Led by Azam Ali, whose “rich, precise voice” (NPR) “conveys both sensuality and devotional ecstasy” (Songlines), their music has been featured in films (The Matrix, Body of Lies) and TV (Bones, Nip/Tuck).

Their Harris Center performance will utilize advanced projection/bodymapping techniques that respond to sound and movement in real time — a cutting-edge, multi-sensory experience created in collaboration with interactive designer Jerome Delapierre.

AN EXTRAVAGANZA OF SIGHTS AND SOUNDS OF IRISH CULTURE Through favorite Irish melodies, traditional steps and Celtic instrumentals, Dublin Irish Dance’s production of Stepping Out tells a story of the Irish Immigration to America after the Great Famine of the mid-1800s. Greeted by diverse cultures and rich traditions from around the globe, the new Irish emigrants congregate in dance gatherings where ancient Irish melodies fuse with African rhythms, creating American tap dance and early roots music. INTERNATIONAL GUITAR NIGHT Each year, International Guitar Night’s founder Brian Gore invites a new cast of guitar luminaries from around the world for special concert tours highlighting the diversity of acoustic guitar music. For IGN’s 18th year of touring, Germany’s Gypsy Jazz legend Lulo Reinhardt will return as the show’s host and will be joined by Calum Graham, the young Canadian contemporary sensation; Marek Pasieczny, Poland’s innovative classical composer/performer, and award-winning American guitarist Michael Chapdelaine.

In the 1970s, she was the greatest long-distance swimmer in the world. But it was in 2013 — at the age of 64, in her fifth and final attempt — that she successfully completed the 110-mile, 53-hour swim from Cuba to Florida.
