2016-17 SEASON OF Dear Arts Lover; Once again, it’s going to be a great year for shows at the Harris Center!

On the Broadway front, we have 6 major tours coming: Once, Rent (special 20th Anniversary production), Fame, Mama Mia! (the “Farewell Tour”), Chicago and a marvelous reimagining of Pippin. It’s one of those rare years when many exceptional Broadway shows hit the road in the same season and find their way to the intimacy of Stage One. There’s no better venue for these —“great shows, up close” indeed!

But, as everyone knows, the Harris Center is home to many, many other kinds of performances. Of particular note: Handel’s Messiah, performed by one of the finest interpreters of the piece in the world—New York City’s Choir of Trinity Wall Street with the Trinity Baroque Orchestra, Julian Wachner conducting. Also coming our way this fall is the legendary choreographer Twyla Tharp with her 50th Anniversary retrospective. Ian Anderson will explore his band’s namesake Jethro Tull, and Billy Bob Thornton will be visiting with his band the Boxmasters as well. In the spring, sitar virtuoso Anoushka Shankar will grace our stage.

We’ll also be welcoming back some old friends: Jeffrey Siegel, Mark Hummel, Clint Black, DRUMLine Live and the Russian National Ballet Theatre each are returning with new programs, each brandishing the same high quality that brought them to the Harris Center previously.

Increasingly, our community partners are presenting touring artists of note, with the legendary Mavis Staples, Michael Feinstein, Melinda Doolittle, Larry Carlton, Iris Dement, Jake Shimabukuro, Marc Cohn and many more destined for Stage One this season.

And, of course, regional favorites—Harris Center partners such as the Folsom Lake Symphony, El Dorado Musical Theatre, Placer Pops Chorale, Pamela Hayes Classical Ballet Theatre, Core Dance and others—offer you the best talent from across the capital region.

Folsom Lake College’s own productions in dance, music and theatre continue to shine, providing both great performances and invaluable experiences for students learning the ropes.

As the Harris Center matures—we are the youngest performing arts venue in the capital region—we strive to continue to refine our services and offerings to patrons. Beginning this season, in addition to our donor member discount program, we are reintroducing subscription series (see pg 45) to provide increased value for those purchasing multiple shows in a specific area of interest.

We turned five years old last year, and your enthusiasm continues to inspire us to offer you the best in music, theater and dance—a vibrant program we can all be proud of. Thanks for all of your support. We look forward to seeing you at many great shows this season.

Honored with six Tony Awards, a Grammy, and thousands of standing ovations, the national tour of the longest-running American musical in Broadway history is coming to Folsom for seven performances so you can see it as never before—up close in the intimate Harris Center.

Twyla Tharp Dance 50th Anniversary Tour Country Dances Brahms Paganini Beethoven Op. 130 The Harris Center welcomes the Twyla Tharp Dance 50th Anniversary Tour to Folsom in what will be an unprecedented dance event for the community.

Over her storied career, Twyla Tharp has created over 160 dances across genres, choreographed for film (from Miloš Forman to James Brooks) and Broadway (with music ranging from Billy Joel to Bob Dylan). She’s received a Tony Award, 19 honorary doctorates, and a MacArthur Fellowship, among other honors. The word “legend” is almost too modest in describing Twyla Tharp. “These are unmistakably the work of a master. There is so much in them: so much variety, so much life” (New York Times) Come for an evening of world-class dance, as 12 dancers perform a range of work from Ms. Tharp’s far-reaching career.

by Ian Anderson Ian Anderson—the flute and voice behind the legendary band Jethro Tull— celebrates his 48th year on stage with a new concert tour. This performance at the Harris Center is quasi-operatic in structure—all the better to tell the tale of the original Jethro Tull. An 18th century English agricultural inventor, Jethro Tull’s life is re-imagined through some of Tull’s best-known songs, plus newly written music that helps round out the story. Jethro Tull, the band, has released 30 recordings, selling more than 60 million copies; joining Mr. Anderson will be David Goodier, John O’Hara, Florian Opahle, Scott Hammond, and some surprise virtual guests.

Formed in 1965, this now legendary California band quickly discovered their forte—they sounded like the Beach Boys! That sound led them to surf music icons Jan & Dean and from 1976-80 Papa toured North America with the duo. An Evening With Billy Bob Thornton And The Boxmasters Billy Bob Thornton—yes, that Billy Bob Thornton—performs with his American roots-rock band, a group of seasoned musicians whose music is rich in rhythm and story. They’re the real deal: their third album Modbilly reached #14 on the AMA’s Top 100 Albums of the Year and they’ve toured as Willie Nelson’s opening act. “They’re working in the tradition of musical mavericks Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash, surveying the world for stories of ordinary people” (Los Angeles Times). His songs have been recorded by Bonnie Raitt, Johnny Cash, Mose Allison, and his son Rufus Wainwright, among others, while her music has earned multiple Grammy nominations, and the respect of John Prine, Steve Earle, and Emmylou Harris, each of whom has invited her to collaborate—she’s “one of the great voices in contemporary popular music” (NPR).

Mavis Staples She and her family sang for Martin Luther King, Jr., Bob Dylan proposed marriage to her, and David Bowie and Prince were both huge fans. Grammy Award-winner Mavis Staples is living, breathing history, having continuously crossed musical genres like no one since Ray Charles. Weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R&B, blues, rock, and hip hop over the last 60 years, this iconic singer has sung through so many changes—from the civil rights movement and the beloved Staple Singers, to today’s world and her illustrious solo career (the documentary MAVIS! recently premiered on HBO).

Marty Stuart Marty Stuart is a songwriter, performer unsurpassed, outlaw, student, teacher, star-spangled instrumentalist, photographer, philosopher, historian, writer of prose, jumpin’ jack flash, master. Marty went solo after working for Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash and dragged country music into the 1990s clinging to the tassels of Lefty Frizzell. Along the way, he got a Golden Globe nomination for scoring Billy Bob Thornton’s All the Pretty Horses, collected five Grammys, married the beautiful country music legend Connie Smith, joined the Grand Ole Opry, brought together his band The Fabulous Superlatives, unveiled the Marty Stuart Show on RFD TV and took the last photograph of Johnny Cash. The Harris Center welcomes him back to Folsom.

A faithful tribute to Barry Manilow, with all the big hits: “Mandy,” “Could It Be Magic,” “Copacabana,” “Looks Like We Made It”—Jim and his band recreate these and more in all of their full, Manilow-like splendor. Michael Doucet & Tom Rigney with Flambeau A collaboration conceived of in Cajun heaven. With two Grammy wins and a National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA, Michael Doucet (of Beausoleil fame) has been recognized as the premier Cajun fiddle player, preserving the music of his culture while expanding its horizons. Northern California’s Tom Rigney has, over the past several decades, become one of the premier blues and roots music violinists in the world. Tom brings his band Flambeau to perform selections from Cajun Fandango, which features both Doucet and Rigney in an eclectic mix of roots music styles: Cajun two-steps, waltzes, and rocking blues tunes—all played with spontaneity and fire.

Asleep At The Wheel With Special Guest Hot Club of Cowtown Considered “one of the best live acts in the business” (Reuters), nine-time Grammy Award-winner Asleep at The Wheel rolls into Folsom for their Lone Star State of Mind show. Their trademark “jazz with a cowboy hat” has demonstrated just how 46 years on the road makes for outstanding American roots music; today, their alumni roster is well over 80 members, including an impressive list of musicians who have performed with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, and more. Cellist Susan Lamb Cook is joined by chamber music artists from around the country, performing some of the greatest chamber music ever written with passion and personality.

The Classical Masters Music Festival includes both a competition for young musicians and a Gala Concert fundraiser, open to the community. This year’s Gala features Franc D’Ambrosio, best known as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, The Phantom Of The Opera, with over 2,300 performances of the lead role. The very first time Handel’s Messiah was performed in America, it was performed in a tavern in New York. The second and probably more famous performance was at Manhattan’s Trinity Wall Street, a parish down the street from the tavern, in New York City in 1770. TICKET EXCHANGES Tickets may be exchanged for another performance of the same titled show with a 48hour notice prior to the date of the originally scheduled performance. A fee of $3.00 will apply to each ticket exchange. All programs, artists, dates, and prices subject to change.

REFUNDS All ticket sales are final and non-refundable. There are no refunds unless an event is cancelled and not replaced.

ACCESSIBILITY The Harris Center is accessible to patrons with disabilities. Wheelchair seating is available in all venues. Portable wireless listening devices are available with a small, refundable deposit or driver’s license. ASL interpreters are available for select events, when requested two weeks in advance of event. Please inform the Ticket Office of any special needs when ordering tickets.

CHILDREN All patrons are required to have a ticket, including youngsters sitting on laps. Parents are expected to take into account the subject and nature of performances when selecting shows for their children, and to make sure etiquette is a part of the theater-going experience. Parents will be asked to remove disruptive children.

PARKING Ample event parking is available in Lots C and D on the northwest side of the Folsom Lake College campus near the Harris Center. For weekday events, a $2 parking permit is required — this is included with tickets purchased in advance, or may be picked up at Will Call upon arrival. No permit is required on Friday evenings after 5 pm or anytime on Saturday or Sunday.

Los Rios Community College District The Los Rios Community College District is a two-year public college district serving the greater Sacramento region.

The district includes American River, Cosumnes River, Folsom Lake, and Sacramento City colleges; major centers in Placerville, Davis, West Sacramento, downtown Sacramento, Natomas, and Rancho Cordova; and special services for business and industry.
