Twyla Tharp Dance 50th Anniversary Tour The Harris Center welcomes the Twyla Tharp Dance 50th Anniversary Tour to Folsom in what will be an unprecedented dance event for the community. Over her storied career, Twyla Tharp has created over 160 dances across genres, choreographed for film (from Miloš Forman to James Brooks) and Broadway (with music ranging from Billy Joel to Bob Dylan). She’s received a Tony Award, 19 honorary doctorates, and a MacArthur Fellowship, among other honors. The word “legend” is almost too modest in describing Twyla Tharp. “These are unmistakably the work of a master. There is so much in them: so much variety, so much life” (New York Times) Come for an evening of world-class dance, as 12 dancers perform a range of work from Ms. Tharp’s far-reaching career.

JETHRO TULL Written and Performed

by Ian Anderson Ian Anderson—the flute and voice behind the legendary band Jethro Tull— celebrates his 48th year on stage with a new concert tour. This performance at the Harris Center is quasi-operatic in structure—all the better to tell the tale of the original Jethro Tull. An 18th century English agricultural inventor, Jethro Tull’s life is re-imagined through some of Tull’s best-known songs, plus newly written music that helps round out the story. Jethro Tull, the band, has released 30 recordings, selling more than 60 million copies; joining Mr. Anderson will be David Goodier, John O’Hara, Florian Opahle, Scott Hammond, and some surprise virtual guests.

DRUMLine Live DRUMLine Live returns to Folsom with a brand new show.

Complete with dazzling choreography and explosive percussion, DRUMLine Live is a thrilling spectacle that pays homage to the show-style marching popularized at historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), while providing a soul-stirring revue of some of America’s favorite music. Formed in 1965, this now legendary California band quickly discovered their forte—they sounded like the Beach Boys! That sound led them to surf music icons Jan & Dean and from 1976-80 Papa toured North America with the duo. In the ‘80s, Papa toured and recorded with members of the Beach Boys throughout the next two decades. Papa’s 1975 Top 40 hit “Be True To Your School” reached No. 1 in California.

An Evening With Billy Bob Thornton And The Boxmasters Billy Bob Thornton—yes, that Billy Bob Thornton—performs with his American roots-rock band, a group of seasoned musicians whose music is rich in rhythm and story. They’re the real deal: their third album Modbilly reached #14 on the AMA’s Top 100 Albums of the Year and they’ve toured as Willie Nelson’s opening act. “They’re working in the tradition of musical mavericks Waylon Jennings, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash, surveying the world for stories of ordinary people” (Los Angeles Times). Marty Stuart Marty Stuart is a songwriter, performer unsurpassed, outlaw, student, teacher, star-spangled instrumentalist, photographer, philosopher, historian, writer of prose, jumpin’ jack flash, master. Marty went solo after working for Lester Flatt and Johnny Cash and dragged country music into the 1990s clinging to the tassels of Lefty Frizzell. Along the way, he got a Golden Globe nomination for scoring Billy Bob Thornton’s All the Pretty Horses, collected five Grammys, married the beautiful country music legend Connie Smith, joined the Grand Ole Opry, brought together his band The Fabulous Superlatives, unveiled the Marty Stuart Show on RFD TV and took the last photograph of Johnny Cash. The Harris Center welcomes him back to Folsom.

Cajun Night!

Michael Doucet & Tom Rigney with Flambeau A collaboration conceived of in Cajun heaven. With two Grammy wins and a National Heritage Fellowship from the NEA, Michael Doucet (of Beausoleil fame) has been recognized as the premier Cajun fiddle player, preserving the music of his culture while expanding its horizons. Northern California’s Tom Rigney has, over the past several decades, become one of the premier blues and roots music violinists in the world. Tom brings his band Flambeau to perform selections from Cajun Fandango, which features both Doucet and Rigney in an eclectic mix of roots music styles: Cajun two-steps, waltzes, and rocking blues tunes—all played with spontaneity and fire.

Michael Feinstein has built a dazzling career over the last three decades bringing the music of the Great American Songbook to the world. Asleep At The Wheel With Special Guest Hot Club of Cowtown

Considered “one of the best live acts in the business” (Reuters), ninetime Grammy Award-winner Asleep at The Wheel rolls into Folsom.

Their trademark “jazz with a cowboy hat” has demonstrated just how 46 years on the road makes for outstanding American roots music; today, their alumni roster is well over 80 members, including an impressive list of musicians who have performed with Bob Dylan, Van Morrison, Lyle Lovett, and more. The Wheel was awarded “Lifetime Achievement in Performance” at the Americana Music Awards in 2009, reflecting the reputation of the band’s musicianship. Opening the show is Hot Club of Cowtown, who play “at that crossroads where country meets jazz and chases the blues away” (The Independent). The band is “conscious always that the music is for dancing and an oldfashioned good time” (New York Times).

Cellist Susan Lamb Cook is joined by chamber music artists from around the country, performing some of the greatest chamber music ever written with passion and personality.

The Classical Masters Music Festival includes both a competition for young musicians and a Gala Concert fundraiser, open to the community. This year’s Gala features Franc D’Ambrosio, best known as the Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award-winning musical, The Phantom Of The Opera, with over 2,300 performances of the lead role. Nominated both for a Grammy Award and a National Theatre Award, he has worked with Barry Manilow (“Copacabana”) and shared a stage with Olympic Champion Brian Boitano, Dorothy Hamill , Michael Bolton and many others—including Al Pacino in Godfather III: Mr. D’Ambrosio played Pacino’s opera singing son.

HOME FOR THE HOLIDAYS The Choir of Trinity Wall Street & Trinity Baroque Orchestra Handel’s Messiah Julian Wachner, Director The Harris Center is very proud to present this world-class performance of Handel’s Messiah, which promises to be a high point for the capital region this holiday season.

The very first time Handel’s Messiah was performed in America, it was performed in a tavern in New York. The second and probably more famous performance was at Manhattan’s Trinity Wall Street, a parish down the street from the tavern, in New York City in 1770. The relationship between Trinity Wall Street and Handel’s Messiah has been a special one ever since; if there was but one performance of the Messiah to see, this would be it.

International Guitar Night It’s now, officially, a Folsom tradition: International Guitar Night returns to the Harris Center, presenting three guitar luminaries in a conversation about music that is unlike any other. WORLD ARTS Anoushka Shankar The Harris Center proudly presents a singular figure who is renowned in both classical Indian and world music. Sitar player and composer Anoushka Shankar has garnered five Grammy Award nominations and the title “Asian Hero” by Time magazine.

She studied sitar under her father and guru, the late Ravi Shankar, making her professional classical debut at the age of 13.

With 11 recordings to her credit (including Traces of You, which features Anoushka’s half-sister Norah Jones, and Home, from which her Folsom program will be culled), “her exquisite sitar playing… lives up to the virtuosity that made her the youngest woman ever nominated for a World Music Grammy” (Harper’s Bazaar).

Mehmet Polat Trio A spiritual yet adventurous meeting of three masters of magical instruments, which the group describes in terms of the elements: the 21-string kora is imagined as the earth element, the pear-shaped oud as space and the flute-like ney as the air…and the idea of Mehmet Polat Trio was born. “The instrumentation of the trio is unique. All the more surprising how coherent the merging of traditions sound” (Jazzthetik, DE). Rooted in the Ottoman, ancient Anatolian, Balkan and West African music traditions, the trio’s original compositions are colored by daring improvisations and grooves, presented in a chamber music-like atmosphere.

Russian National Ballet Theatre Company of 50 TITLE OF SHOW Under the artistic direction of the legendary Elena Radchenko, a principal dancer with the Bolshoi Ballet, the Russian National Ballet Theatre was founded during Perestroika, when many principal dancers from the great ballet companies migrated to RNBT. Today it is its own institution comprised of 50 exquisite dancers of singular instruction and vast experience— all dedicated to upholding the grand national tradition of the major Russian ballet works. 61st Annual Lenaea High School Theatre Festival One of the nation’s largest and oldest theatre festivals of its kind, Lenaea welcomes over 60 west coast high school theatre programs, with over 1,000 students expected to attend.
