ReyCastillo

The Corpus Christi Caller-Times sports reporter did not play the course, but came out the same day and wrote a story for his newspaper. He was impressed by how many courses Williams has done around the world and how fast he did the Club’s renovation. “He did it in less than a year and that’s so impressive because of what they did,” he said.

Snippets from Rey Castillo's Caller-Times story

“Chet has helped us bring things up to current standards," Corpus Christi Country Club head professional Brent Blackburn said. "Not only with conditioning with new turf grass, but also to make the golf course more fun and with more variety and more playable. Before, all the greens were the same and now there's more variety and every hole is different."

"I remember early on, the first thing I noticed was many of the greens on the course were very similar and repetitive. A lot of them were low in the front and high in the back," Williams said. "What I try to do is design 18 different greens and not have any that are alike. I wanted to create as much variety as I could with the greens. That's why it's a different look and a different challenge. Trying to create different situations for the golfer."

Blackburn said the renovations to the course also gives players a chance to play on a state-of-the-art golf course close to home instead of having to travel to Houston, San Antonio or Dallas. The Corpus Christi Country Club has already been approached by the Texas Golf Association and the Golf Course Superintendents Association to host a statewide tournament in November and next summer.

Blackburn said there has already been a push of new members and more tournaments being scheduled at the Club because of the renovations.

"The conditioning is excellent and there's nothing like it in the area," Blackburn said. "The good news is that people know the excellent job Chet Williams does. They want to play on a Chet Williams Golf Course. This is the place to be."

Golfpodcasterplayswithhisdad whocaddiedatClubdecadesago

The Club’s Media Day was a chance for Corpus Christi native Andy Torres to see the renovation but have a special outing with his Vietnam veteran dad who caddied at the Club decades ago at the current site and earlier on the Up River Road site. Torres is now a coach and teacher in San Antonio. He has a South Texas golf podcast called nothingisob and Pro Brent’s been a guest on the podcast.

“My dad and I had a rocky relationship when I was growing up,” said Torres. His dad started playing golf, Torres said, and it "saved his life." Golf also repaired their relationship When his son started playing.

“Dad was telling me how he picked up balls from the drainage area, pointed out where the caddyshack and caddy master were. He’d get clubs for this judge, or this lawyer and get a dollar when he carried the bags,” Torres said. Williams rode with Torres and his dad Edward for a number of holes during the outing.

“Dad loved everything about the renovation – and older guys don’t usually like change,” Torres said.

Torres praised Williams' renovation and Course Superintendent Seth Smith forthe course’s conditions. “It’s in great condition,” Torres said. A number of the media players said the renovations should help the Club host some future tournaments.

“Brent, Chet and Seth have checked all the boxes to host events. Chet is a big name and brings credibility. I’d love to see a Mid-Am here,” Torres said.

SETHSMITH/ GROUNDSSUPERINTENDENT

With the course closure Monday through Wednesday, the grounds team was able to complete many needed cultural practices on the golf course. The putting greens were aerified, verticut and heavily topdressed. Fairways and approaches were verticut and de-thatched and the tees were aerified. These proactive practices will keep our surfaces healthy and promote great playability in the future.

SUMMER

Lifeguardsconstantlytraining

Once a week our dedicated lifeguards come together for Inservice and put their skills to the test. They practice everything from basic rescues to CPR and spinal injury response. The lifeguard staff trains regularly and rigorously to ensure they are always ready to respond to any situation that they may be presented with. In addition to honing their skills, the guards also perform minor maintenance on the pool. Scrubbing tile, vacuuming, and brushing are just a few of the things the staff does to keep the pool sparkling. We hope you come out to enjoy the pool, swim safely, and say hi to our amazing lifeguard staff!
