Forecasts showed Hurricane Beryl heading straight for Corpus Christi, forcing a change of plans for the annual Firecracker. One of the 72 players who teed it up Saturday hits his drive on #1.

Hurricane concerns change two-day Firecracker into Hurricane Beryl Two-Man Best Ball ... won by Brian and Kevin Smith

Pro Brent just before shotgun began. He said the field was roughly double the field for a regular TwoMan Best Ball because not everyone had to leave due to hurricane concerns.

The first step of the scorecard playoff? Back-nine scores. The next step was the final six holes. Kevin Smith’s eagle on #15 was key to a better score on the final half-dozen holes, but they needed pars on the last three holes to finish tied – including an eightfoot putt Brian made on 18.

The brothers said they made of mess of 18 after hitting what they called perfect drives but left approach shots short of the pin on the front of the green.

Kevin three putted, leaving Brian to make his par save.

Because the tournament had a shotgun start to give people time to deal with the impending hurricane, Brian had no idea how big the putt would be.

“I kind of had a feeling and I said, ‘I think this means something.’” It did.

Daniel and Trey rode an eagle on #2 and seven birdies to their 64.

Daniel hit a pitching wedge from 148 yards on #2 after his drive ended up in the left rough. He made a 20-foot putt for the eagle.

“We brother-in-lawed it well,” Daniel said. If he was having a bad hole, Trey did well and vice-versa.

Daniel had four birdies and Trey three – one of them on #2, which was bested by his teammate’s eagle.

Kevin Smith also eagled #5, chipping in from pin high left of the green. He birdied 3, 7 and 9 on the front.

“I was bad on the front,” said Brian. After the turn, if one Smith was struggling on a hole, the other stepped up.

Brian birdied #13 after an approach from the right trees left him with a 25foot putt he holed.

After a par on 14, Kevin hit a hybrid from 235 yards on the par-5 15th to about ten feet then made the eagle putt.

FirstFlight

Texas A&M college buddies Craig Kondoff and Miles Fabian won the First Flight Net with a 64.

Fabian came down from Houston to pair with Kondoff.

“It was supposed to be me preparing for the hurricane,” said Kondoff of Pleaseseefollowingpage

earlier reports Corpus Christi would take the brunt of the storm, but it turned north and Houston took the biggest hit.

The pair shot a 69 gross with five birdies but a double bogey on #6 after shots into the trees and water.

“We figured it would take four or five under to win. We were surprised we won,” said Kondoff, who said his Aggie pal carried the team with some key up and downs.

Theunofficialplayoff

If the Firecracker had been played and there was no hurricane threat, the playoff would have been on the course.

The Smiths and Sciantarelli/Crain went back out to the course Saturday for an unofficial playoff.

Kevin made an easy par on #1 after Brian said he played the hole like “an absolute dog.”

Daniel and Trey both made pars to extend the playoff. Then Brian got up and down on #2 for the only birdie of the four golfers and the “unofficial” win.

The hot and dry weather allowed us to proceed with aerification week as planned. The greens were verticut, core aerified, heavily topdressed, and the Dryject service was performed last on Wednesday. These processes relieve compaction, remove unwanted thatch (old stems), allow healthy oxygen exchange, create many new channels for water infiltration, and promote new vigorous growth. The fairways and approaches were verticut and de-thatched to rid of old stems and promote new growth. Recovery will take place over the next couple of weeks with the addition of extra water and fertilizer to expedite the process.
