ATRADE was established by the government in March 1993 as an external trade promotion arm of the International Trade and Industry Ministry. It is mandated to assist Malaysian companies to establish their presence overseas and raise their profiles in foreign markets through promotional efforts, including participation in trade missions, specialised marketing missions and international trade fairs. It also helps organise trade fairs with international participation. MATRADE has been faithful to its mandate – to continuously position Malaysia as a competitive trading nation, as well as to develop local companies to be successful exporters. “Recognising the strength of Malaysian companies in high-value sectors such as the aerospace industry, MATRADE has doubled its efforts in promoting this sector,” said Dato’s Wan Latiff, citing the biannual Kuala Lumpur International Aerospace Business Convention (KLIABC) as one of the key aerospace events in Southeast Asia. The event, to be held from 23 to 25 June 2020, will serve as an avenue to support Malaysian companies’ inclusion in the global supply chain.

The event will be attracting the world’s top aerospace companies such as Airbus Group, Rolls Royce, Boeing, Safran France, Ruag Aviation, GIFAS (French Aerospace Industries Association), FL Technics, Embraer, Thales and Pratt & Whitney, to scout for future partners and suppliers among Malaysian companies at the event. Apart from participating in top tier events overseas such as OTC Houston, Arab Health, GITEX, Tokyo Game Show and Paris Air Show, MATRADE is also active in bringing quality foreign buyers from overseas to Malaysia for the International Sourcing Programme (INSP), a signature pre-arranged business meetings by MATRADE. INSP is also organised in conjunction with big events namely Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS), OTC Asia, Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA), Semicon Southeast Asia and Oil & Gas Asia (OGA) in order to widen sales reach and increase Malaysia’s visibility. “This high-impact initiative is a cost-effective effort aimed at assisting Malaysian companies in their global ventures. “The INSP is also a good platform for companies from various backgrounds to compare notes and exchange knowledge and skills related to the industry,” he said.

SHARING RESOURCES WITH BE PLAYERS

MATRADE has 46 network offices in major cities all over the world, where officers there are to help connect companies with potential foreign businessevent partners. “This facilitation can also be extended to the business events industry in internationalising their existing events. “Local business events can leverage on MATRADE’s overseas network to generate market intelligence, especially on market trends via research as well as tender notifications,” said Dato’ Wan Latiff. He cited as an example, MATRADE’s signature event, Malaysia International Halal Showcase (MIHAS) which was introduced in 2004, that started off as a consumer halal trade show, but has since evolved into one of the world’s top halal trade fair with more than 1,000 exhibitors from 40 countries with visitors from over 80 countries. “This achievement is done through collaborations with other government and private entities locally and internationally, utilising MATRADE’s wide international offices and network.” As for further cooperation with MACEOS, he said: “MATRADE has always practiced an open door policy and is willing to work with various entities that share our mission and vision as well as further our

trade agenda. We look forward to collaborating with MACEOS to enhance the business events industry, which subsequently drives Malaysia’s exports.”

SUPPORTING HOMEGROWN SHOWS

According to Dato’ Wan Latiff, the international trade exhibition and conference – one of the most effective trade promotional tools – is now becoming a major business in Malaysia. “The country has sufficient facilities of international standing to hold international exhibitions and conferences locally. “Exhibitions and conferences are getting bigger and more elaborate. In promoting the exhibitions and conferences industry in the country, the government decided that all such trade events, both of local and international status, be encouraged to register with MATRADE,” he stated. In addition, MATRADE endorses selective business events that can add credibility and help the organiser promote the event more effectively. “Events eligible for endorsement are trade exhibitions or conferences with trade exhibitions,” he added.

GOVERNMENT COORDINATION

Earlier this year, the government through MITI and MATRADE as the secretariat introduced the inception of the Export Promotion Programmes Coordination Committee or Jawatankuasa Koordinasi Program Promosi Eksport (JK-X). “This is an embodiment of the government’s efforts to optimise the impact of export promotion initiatives for the country. “The committee aims to create better synergy among relevant government ministries and agencies,” he said. The establishment of JK-X was prompted by the need to have a more streamlined and coordinated efforts in promoting exports. This is pivotal in ensuring the optimal use of resources including budget and assistance provided by various government ministries and agencies. JK-X functions to review and approve all export promotion programme proposals from ministries and agencies. The approval of programmes will be given based on products or services relevant to target markets, programme relevance to domestic capabilities as well as budget optimisation for better returns on investment. Additionally, the JK-X will be a platform for data gathering and information sharing, particularly on market intelligence. This will help to generate

ideas and foster greater synergy among ministries and agencies. “MATRADE will also continue to foster partnerships with other government agencies, private sectors as well as other key stakeholders to strengthen the organisation of Malaysian business events with the hope of attracting more international trade exhibitors and visitors to the country.”

2020 AND BEYOND

MATRADE is committed to remaining relevant amid changes in the way business is conducted and fluctuations in the world’s economy. “As the world changes, MATRADE strives to move towards maintaining Malaysia’s trade surplus by promoting Malaysia’s strength in key sectors such as electrical & electronics, manufacturing and petrochemicals as well as its high-value sectors, technology-driven and service-based sectors, namely: aerospace, automotive, creative industry, ICT, medical devices, healthcare and others. MATRADE’s strategic orientation manoeuvres along the elements of increasing responsiveness to market dynamics, including integration into the global supply chain and actively leveraging on international and local e-commerce platforms,” said Dato’ Wan Latiff. He added that MATRADE will continuously strive to build export capacity competitiveness and trade opportunities for Malaysian companies with particular emphasis on export readiness, market orientation and quick response to global demands. On public-private partnership initiative, he stated that MATRADE will continue collaborating with both industries, academia and stakeholders in either formulating trade promotion activities or bringing on-demand solutions to the table. “Implementation of trade promotion programmes are not done in isolation but together with stakeholders such as other government agencies, trade associations as well as business chambers for better uptake in participation, resource management and impactful export promotion efforts.” In addition, MATRADE will work closely with MITI and other related government agencies as well as the private sector to get Malaysian companies, especially SMEs, to adopt digitalisation. “Advances in information technology such as automation and AI under the fourth industrial revolution have become a significant enabler for companies to tap into new ways of doing business, replacing redundancy, and improving productivity,” he said.

During the session, the members were enlightened on the Malaysian exhibition landscape, which is made

Kuching on July 13, was graced by Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth & Sports Sarawak. “Business events create more direct jobs than any other sector due to the expenditure of delegates on hotels, flights, shopping, entertainment,

which converts into tax revenues and increased employment opportunities.” He said legacy impact is as equally significant for Sarawak as the state aims to impart values that will change the community. “Delivering knowledge through business events will help resolve our social challenges, reform current policies and regulations as well as encourage new innovations that are on par with the rest of the world. He added to develop a state or nation requires the input of a skilled workforce. “With the collaboration between MACEOS and BESarawak, we will groom and empower future leaders in the business events and tourism industry with the skills, knowledge and ideas to lead Sarawak as a competitive destination. “Therefore, by doing this, we are aligning our human capital development with Sarawak’s seven key focus areas, namely Urban Development and Redevelopment, Social, Environmental, Agricultural and Industrial Development including SCORE (Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy), Service Industry and Digital Economy,” said Datuk Karim. He said to become a highfunctioning state, the people must be ready to take up life-long learning about the industry. “MACEOS will strengthen the purpose of the professional development programmes by incorporating Continuous Education Unit points, which can be used to pursue a professional certification at the international level.

“Business events and tourism go hand-in-hand, and to achieve our five million tourists target in 2019, we must urge all industry partners to take another step forward in their professional development, he said. Among those present at the signing ceremony were MACEOS

Sarawak Chapter chairperson Gracie Geikie, BESarawak chairman Tan Sri Muhammad Leo Michael Toyad, BESarawak chief operating officer Amelia Roziman, MACEOS President Dato Vincent Tan, Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports permanent secretary Hii Chang Kee,

and BESarawak deputy chairman and president of Sarawak Business Federation SBF and Sarawak Chamber of Commerce and Industry Datuk Abang Abdul Karim Tun Openg. The agreement has solidified the collaboration between MACEOS and BESarawak. The programme is set to become one of many strategies propelling Sarawak to become a leading destination for business events. The programme, from 23-26 September, and 14-17 October, encompasses a comprehensive eightday course that will equip participants with Continuing Education Units (CEUs) in order for them to strive towards becoming a recognised Certified Meeting Professional (CMP). Among the topics that will be covered are understanding Sarawak, project and risk management, good financials, bidding, design and site management.

stablished in October last year at the BE Forum, the Business Events Council of Malaysia (BECM) is made up of several national associations aimed at uniting their commitments and synergising efforts to position Malaysia as a preferred business events destination. Acting as an independent private and public advisory council, BECM is headed by Alan Pryor, to provide and support the Tourism and Culture Ministry as well as other relevant ministries for the implementation of Malaysia’s Business Events Roadmap.

“Together with the guidance and great support from our national bureau Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), Malaysia’s state convention bureaus and destination marketing organisations from Penang, Sabah and Sarawak can work collaboratively to build stronger partnerships. Yes, many voices but all with one same message – hosting international Business Events is good for Malaysia,” Pryor said at its unveiling. The national associations are MACEOS; Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA);

Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH); Malaysian Society of Association Executives (MSAE); Malaysia Shopping Malls Association (PPKM); Malaysia Retailers Association (MRA); Arts, Live Festivals and Events Association (ALIFE); the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA Malaysia Committee), and Malaysia Retail Chain Association (MRCA). BECM is also focused on cultivating a business platform that will empower industry players to pool their resources and knowledge, whilst leveraging on shared experiences and

This is poised to boost tourism by way of visitor economy building, and will help translate the impact on investment and trade towards the acceleration of our new national transformation efforts.

Secretary-General of the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, Datuk Isham Ishak, headed a delegation with Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) to IMEX and the Policy Forum with Pryor in Germany.

July 2019 Datuk Isham Ishak attended a special education forum designed for Malaysian Association Executives in partnership with the MyCEB, the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Business Events Alliance (KLCCBEA) and the Malaysian Society of Association Executives (MSAE). The five board members from AMC (Association Management Companies) Institute provided a direct educational exchange to more 200 Malaysian stakeholders. In summary, the programme was developed to provide an educational destination immersion for the board members, a knowledge exchange forum by subject matter experts and a business development opportunity for Malaysian associations. In the same month, an MoU was signed between the MRCA and BECM during the Malaysian International Retail and Franchise

exhibition. MRCA expressed their intention to support BECM within the scope of its mandate towards positioning Malaysia as a preferred business events destination among the competitive environment in the regions of Asia. The MoU was signed between Dato Vincent Lim, BECM Deputy Chair and Ken Phua, MRCA Secretary-General, witnessed by Dato’ Seri Saifuddin Nasution, Minister with the Domestic Trade and Consumerism, and Pryor.

August 2019 BECM met with MACEOS and the Minister of Federal Territories Khalid Samad to discuss support from his ministry and Kuala Lumpur City Hall for business events held in the city. Issues raised included event licensing and marketing, and the promotion of arts and cultural activities to drive the visitor economy and the formation of a KL City Convention Bureau. A request was also made for a more regular interface through a quarterly meeting and representation on relevant committees. In the same month, MACEOS with MyCEB held a meeting with the Immigration Department led by the MACEOS President Dato’ Vincent Lim pertaining to the Professional Visit Pass (PVP) – entry requirement for foreign exhibitors who wish to participate in any exhibition locally. The discussion focused on addressing visa processing issues and other enablers to make Malaysia a more business-friendly country, in order to increase its competitive advantage among neighbouring countries in ASEAN.
