album cover project 01
This album cover is a conceptual project designed to capture the personality and essence of someone around us, in this case my sister Crystal Cho. Though not a cover of an actual album, the concept of the album was designed to link the idea of music with the her identity. In order to represent her life, the chick was used to represent her new shift in identity from a student to a worker, and the flower was used to represent her delicate and fluctuating mental condition. The title, KKOT is the romanization of the Korean word for ‘flower’, to emphasize her Korean identity as well has her current condition.
Adobe Photoshop was mainly used for this project, to merge an orchid head with a chick. To encapsulate the entirety of her identity, it was made into a single image than a collage.

literaryposterdevice 02
This poster was designed to visually represent the literary device: anaphora. ㅑInspired by the Adobe Illustrator interface, the definition and some examples of anaphora was expressed on the poster both visually and literarily.
The main colors used on this poster was also inspired by the Adobe Illustrator interface: the yellow was reminiscent of the yellow-orange color of the app, while the blue accents were used from the blue given in the application UI.
Adobe Illustrator was used as a motif in order to visually represent the repetitive nature of the anaphora with the ‘ copy mouse cursor’. Additionally, it was allowed for a very free flowing yet organized display of information.
MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE MONOSODIUM GLUTAMATE
Kikunae Ikeda umami umami
Kikunae Ikeda, a Japanese chemist and Tokyo Imperial University professor of Chemistry, was the first to find the chemical basis of glutamate. In 1908, he discovered the flavor of umami as he was having a soup of kombu dashi, a commonly found seafood ingredient in Japan. He described the flavor as a "meaty flavor", even though the soup did not consist of any meat. To further enhance this new flavour, Ikeda added bonito flakes, very thinly sliced fish flakes that are also very common in Japan, to

dashi bonito
the kombu dashi to make the first ever concentrated glutamate mixture. Being unable to describe this new flavour, he coined a term, umami. In Japanese, umami directly translates to "deliciousness", but the definition is the savory flavour of food. He was able to find the chemical responsible for this flavour, glutamate. He discovered that glutamate consists of five carbon atoms, nine hydrogen atoms, one nitrogen atom, and four oxygen atoms. Umami soon became accepted as one of the five basic tastes worldwide.

ajinomoto

Kikunae Ikeda and Saburosuke Suzuki discovered that they could keep glutamate in a powdered form by adding a single sodium atom to it. As a chemist, Ikeda tested whether it would change the compound, and fortunately, they found out that the sodium atom and glutamate molecule divided once the monosodium glutamate came in contact with human saliva, making it just as harmless as the naturally found substance. By the 1950s, Ajinomoto could be found on any dining table in Japan.
Saburosuke Suzuki is a Japanese businessman who founded the first ever company to produce MSG. The company, Ajinomoto was founded in 1909, meaning "the essence of taste". Working with Kikunae Ikeda, Suzuki was able to find a way to make a business out of the glutamate. Together, they identified how to keep the glutamate in powdered form without complicated procedures. They both had the intention of making glutamate a widely available seasoning.

MSG infographic 03
This is an infographic about Monosodium Glutamate (MSG), incorporating segments of copy and visual elements. The general theme of this infographic is minimal and slightly retro. Because of the minimal design, the color scheme was all bold to catch the eye and easily put emphasis on significant information. The unifying shape is a squiggle, inspired by instant ramen, as it serves as one of the most prominent products with MSG. The photos were all filtered to be monochrome in black and the main colors to balance out the dull composition. This was also to eliminate unnecessary or clashing colors, as numerous photos had to be incorporated.

brandingimaginarydesign 04
This project was designing the overall branding of an imaginary company, in this case is a suit company. This project had to incorporate a brand logo and overall design theme including colors, typeface, shapes, photo concepts and more.
The logo was inspired by the lapel of a blazer, which also resembles the letter B’ of the company name, Blazed. Additionally to match with the logotype and give a classic appearance, serifs were added to the tips of the shapes, as well as a variation in thickness of the shapes. Colors were chosen to coincide with the classic appearance, with general theme being minimal yet classic.

Coach Peter Brodhead, h.s English teacher guides pupil Jinhyeok Kim (5B) with his layups, Apr 13. “Layups are a really important move to know and are an essential move in basketball,” Coach Brodhead said. “But many students seem to struggle with this particular move so I’m prioritizing this move over other ones.”

After each practice, after all the drills and after all the scores have come out, coaches and players alike get together for a cheer, Apr. 13. “Although it feels sad to lose, the coaches and the players always remind me that winning isn’t important,” Julie Koh (5B) said. “I want to remember these moments with my friends forever.”
While getting warmed up for another day of practice, Sarah Kim (5C) leans against the wall to catch her breath, Apr. 13. “Practice can be tough,” Sarah said. “But when you start seeing progress and improvement in yourself, it makes it all worth it.”
Students seize the moment of joy in es basketball

The lips of Yunha Hwang (5A) break into a smile as he holds the ball and gets ready to shoot it into the basketball hoop at Tiger Gym 3. Laughter and vibrance fill up the whole space, and the radiant energy of the young players cannot be contained during the practice on Apr. 13th.

“Basketball is a very fun sport to watch,” Yunha Hwang (5A) said. “But it’s even more fun when you play it. It’s even better when you play together with your friends and classmates.”
Unlike the relatively more competitive basketball programs in middle and high school, the es basketball boosters program has attempted to reduce such comparatively stringent conditions and focus on purely making the game fun for these young athletes. The absence of competitions or games between
schools allows freedom and “[This program] ing young kids game so they sports fun so Peter Brodhead Although on the students there is no doubt ther involvement does its best step for the students ger voyage. “I’m planning dle and high hope the experience would help me

minimal theme yearbook spread 05
This was one of the yearbook spreads made featuring the elementary school basketball club. It was designed to showcase school spirit and activity and not a free theme, therefore it had more restrictions in the layout. This spread was part of the yearbook when the theme was minimal, which allowed for lots of learning experience in working within boundaries. Working in strict boundaries of shapes, spacing and color enhanced my abilities to work with minimal resources but still have creative freedom. Having to work with people of various positions and assigned fields, the layout of the spread was designed to bring together the copy and photo components and lightly emphasize sections to keep the spread more interesting.
layout by Christine Cho copy by Chanyeol Kim photo by Angela Lee 129 basketball boostersFrom the age of four and a half, Claire Lee (1A) has handled the violin, an instrument that is both extremely delicate and difficult to play. As an aspiring violinist, she frequently fantasizes about herself on a stage, with the spotlight on her, her hands placed on the bow ready to strike the first note.

Unicorns, the epit ome of fantastical characters, is something that appears in everyone’s dreams. However, in Lauren Noh’s (JK) dreams, she is the unicorn, equipped with magical powers and a rainbow horn.

On the contrary, Hayden Bracciano (PK) enjoys daydreaming about himself as an elephant. In particular, he states that he admires an elephant’s immensity and great strength.

Junghyun Lee (1A) and Jayden Kim (1A) enjoy playing sports in their spare time, whether it is with their friends or just the two of them with a ball. Like many other boys of their age, most of their dreams consist of themselves in the field, shooting the ball into the net with the perfect angle and strength. “Sometimes, I just dream about chasing the ball,” commented Jayden Kim. As dreams may often be a reflection of their aspirations, the boys’ reveries may be revealing what their true dreams for the future are.

When one thinks of modern technology, the first brand to come to mind is probably a fruit: Apple. Jonah Kim (2A) aspires to be like the founder of Apple, Steve Jobs, by becoming a scientist. His reveries often include himself working in a white laboratory coat, and it is one of his favorite dreams. He believes that his subconsciousness often reflects his hopes for the future, which he is just be ginning to build from its foundation.

Eunjae Lee (2A) is a persistent athlete – especially when he is in the water. It has only been one year since he first started his swimming career; however, he often dreams of himself floating on rippling waters, casually doing a backstroke under a ray of sunlight. “I also like the front crawl when I want to go fast,” Aaron added. It is an interesting thought to wonder that perhaps he may become the next Michael Phelps of Korea – who knows?

scrapbook theme yearbook spread 06

This was another yearbook spread made in a different year, that had a scrapbook theme. It features students from kindergarten to low elementary school, and renders them in what they dream to be in the future. The theme and decorations on this page were inspired by children’s doodles to encapsulate their liveliness. Due to the nature of scrapbooking, this theme allowed for much more freedom within the layout, and variations in the shapes used. Additionally, this theme worked with the additional element of texture, which allowed for even more possibilities as well. It allowed to development in learning what to eliminate and what to use when designing.

gitple typefacebranddesign 07
This font design was part of a bigger project for the branding design of the IT company ‘Gitple’. The font was designed to create a new logo as well as a font that would be utilizeable within the app UI.
All letters were designed with the three primary shapes (shown at the bottom) in order to bring together not only the typeface together but also the overal theme.
The font had to be bold and make up the brand logo, yet had to be minimal and versatile to use within the app as well, so the font does not vary in thickness, yet combines both upper and lowercase letters into one series. It resulted in a very unique font that would be easy to identify as part of the company.

film festival booklet design 08
This was the final project for typography, where we used the content from an external source for design purposes only, and created a design to house all the content.
It was a experimentation with typography, where we had to use one typeface, only typography with no graphic elements to design the entire booklet.
After a number of iterations, my design utilized vellum to print, so the layout design was adjusted accordingly, keeping the transparency of the material in mind. Some elements of the booklet were designed to exhance the experience to utilize the transparency and allow interaction with the booklet through the material.
