OLD BOYS’ ASSOCIATION: CHAIRMAN’S MESSAGE Greetings Old Glenwoodians I would like to extend a warm welcome on behalf of the Glenwood Old Boys Association to all of our Old Boys attending the Annual Old Boys weekend – both members of the association and non-members (hint hint.) This weekend is always a great excuse to return to our Alma Mater and rekindle friendships with school mates as well as some teachers that are still around – yes, Mr Hortop is still teaching! The School and Old Boys welcome our traditional rivals from across the Berea as our opponents for sporting fixtures this weekend with most attention centred on the rugby being played here at Glenwood tomorrow. There is always something special about having DHS as our opponents for Old Boys Weekend and I’m sure this year will be no different.

The Glenwood first XV is having an outstanding season this year with a record of 12 wins out of 12, including the scalps of the “big name” Afrikaans schools Affies and Monument – both played away from the comfort of Fortress Dixons so truly excellent results.

DHS have quietly gone about their season with less attention than us but have already recorded some big wins against local opposition and were undefeated at the Kearsney Festival, so we can expect a big clash tomorrow.

There will be no shortage of motivation nor emotion from both sets of boys tomorrow and we anticipate a hard but clean and fair contest. I’d like to take this opportunity to urge all Old Boys and Glenwood supporters to show our rivals true Glenwood hospitality and the respect they deserve.

Besides the success on the rugby field, Glenwood continues to grow from strength to strength despite the real challenges that most schools face these days. Under the able leadership of the Acting Principal Mrs Barnes, Glenwood maintains its place amongst the top schools in the country across all facets of education. The Old Boys’ Association plays a big role in supporting Mrs Barnes and the school in general and I believe there are even more opportunities for us to assist and give back to Glenwood – more about that a little later. A quick update on the Principal position, it is currently bogged down in some Education Department red tape but we are hoping for a res-

olution in the next few months which will have a very positive impact on the school as we effectively haven’t had a “permanent” leader for nearly four years now. Credit to the staff and Mrs Barnes for maintaining the standards over this time – I’m sure any interactions you will have with the Glenwood Boys over the next few days will bear this out.

A very quick reference to how you, as old boys, can assist. The funding from the Department of Education consists of salaries for less than half the academic and administrative staff and a grant that is probably insufficient to cover the costs of the toilet paper the school uses in a year. This means that the fee collection is vital to paying all….rather ALL other expenses of the school. This does mean that there is a lack of “extra funds” for the “nice-to-haves.” This is an obvious place that Old Boys can step up – we have various ways for Old Boys to get involved without having to part with large sums of cash. The Patron Program allows Old Boys to make a monthly debit-order contribution to the Glenwood Foundation Office. The intent of this foundation is to assist with capital projects, funding of tours and possibly even bursaries for deserving learners. The monthly amount starts from as little as R150 but imagine if we can have 100 Old Boys signed up for that – it’s R15 000 per month. I also urge you all to become fee paying members of the Old Boys Association, for a once-off annual fee of R180. This is literally the only revenue stream of the Association and all of this money goes straight back to deserving school boys or small projects that the school requires assistance on. Lastly, any Old Boys that have a business offering goods or services that the school may require from time to time, please get in touch and let us know – special rates for the school go a long way to stretching the Rand.

Back to Old Boys Weekend, we welcome Mr Neil Powell – very successful coach of the SA 7s, the Blitzbokke. He has freely given of his time to be here with us this evening and it is hugely appreciated. Whilst the 7’s circuit is currently in the off-season, I am sure that his time is still under pressure with planning and coaching from his base in Cape Town. To have him here as our guest is indeed a privilege and I hope he enjoys the evening’s festivities.

A quick thank you to my fellow committee members: Gary Meyer – Vice Chairman, Graham Oberholzer, Ian Dwyer, Terence Chapman, Gareth Jones, Brett Sibson, Kevin Jordan (Staff), Jono Piek (Staff and Old Boy), Mrs Barnes (Staff – Acting Principal) A massive thank you to Graham Oberholzer who stepped down as Chairman of the Association after 11 years at the helm. Graham’s commitment to the Association and the school is mind-blowing. He spends time here helping in the finance office (for free!); he is a constant source of advice and voice of reason on almost every committee that he could be involved in and also recently finally achieved the recognition he so richly deserves by being appointed as the coach of the mighty 6ths rugby team – currently on a hot winning streak of one win! Graham, thank you for all that you’ve done and continue to do for the Old Boys Association and more importantly Glenwood High School.

To Mrs Barnes – keep up the amazing and tireless work that you do. Your “OGA – Our Green Army” chant is inspiring and epitomises how close this school is to your heart. Thank you for all that you do.

To Old Boys – enjoy this evening and tomorrow’s rugby. Keep on supporting the school in whatever way you can – rest assured the same corridors and classrooms that we had the privilege of using are still churning out very special young men. There is something about a Glenwood boy, something inside him that sets us apart from the rest.

Our motto couldn’t be more accurate – “Mankind is our interest and nothing pertaining to that is foreign to us.” We are grounded but successful and we care for those around us as different as we all are individually but united by a common background.

IN MEMORIAM - Frans de Beer

He soon established himself as an able loose forward and was instrumental in the Club’s promotion to first division. Frans served as captain and eventually as the coach of the formidable Glenwood Old Boys’ team of the early 1960’s.

After that he moved to Pietermaritzburg where he had great success as a coach of Pietermaritzburg Collegians.

He also played a solid role in helping rugby at tertiary education level by coaching Cedara and thereafter Pietermaritzburg University.

Glenwood recently lost an ardent supporter with the passing of Frans de Beer.

Frans attended the School in the early 1950’s where he excelled at sport.

Given his loyalty to Glenwood, it is hardly surprising that he joined Glenwood Old Boys’ after school where he quickly made his mark on the rugby field. The Club was in those days in the second division.

Frans also served with distinction as a Natal selector and as the Natal coach.

He was selected for the first Natal Duikers team in 1956 and remained involved in the Club from then on, eventually taking over as Chairman.

Frans de Beer was a loyal Glenwood man to the end.
