FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK must be made of the outstanding achievement of Nicholas James Hardman, who placed first in Form V and was awarded the E Osborn (Rhodes Scholar 1952) Trophy. Our Academic programme has been enhanced this year with the introduction of Google Classroom and Information Technology as a subject in Form IV. Several boys have also opted for Sports Science and Consumer Studies as part of their subject packages. We have also added French and Mandarin as examinable additional subjects. In our Cambridge section Francis Moran achieved outstanding results.

PRINCIPAL REFLECTS ON TERM 1 2019 Dear Parents, Old Boys, Supporters and Boys, We have come to the end of a very busy first quarter; a term that started so early that the boys brought gammon sandwiches to school! Green is Gold! That is our vision for this year. The boys have shown through their achievements in various activities that they are indeed Gold! Despite the heat and humidity, staff and boys retained their energy and passion that was so palpable in our opening Assembly on 9 January. When Winston Churchill went back to his alma mater to speak, the audience anticipated a great speech from the prime minister. However, he stood before them and said six words: Never, never, never, never give up! Our boys adopted a similar philosophy in all their endeavours this term. All their achievements were posted on social media I therefore only highlighted a few.

In the sporting arena, several boys excelled. Our 1st XI Cricket managed to secure a position in the semi-finals of the T20 but unfortunately was defeated by a very good Westville side. Lifa Ntanzi returned from India where he represented South Africa in cricket. Nico Steyn was selected for the SA U18 Sevens Team which travelled to Namibia and won the tournament. The following Glenwood pupils represented the Port Natal Bowling Association at the S.A. National U20 Championships which were held in Bloemfontein from the 26 – 29 March: Jarred Bauristhene, Keagan Bauristhene, Trystan Lassak and Travis Finestone. Our swimmers participated in several galas and while the juniors were still finding their feet, our senior boys excelled. Four of our boys, Tino Kazi, Dylan Raftery, Lesedi Goge and Kwadokuhle Ntshangase were chosen to be part of the cast of the Young Performers Project 2019 production CURTAIN UP.

Our Form II boys thoroughly enjoyed their orientation camp at the NMR and by the time they returned to school, it was clear that their blood had turned green.

I would like to extend my heartfelt appreciation to all for the continuous support and encouragement.

At our recent junior prize giving ceremony we celebrated the academic achievements of Form II to Form V boys. Mention

GRADE 8 ORIENTATION Glenwood held its Form II Orientation / Adventure Camp at the Natal Mounted Rifles HQ where they camped out for two nights. After a short hike from the Blue Waters Hotel, nearly 300 boys pitched their tents and prepared for the course. Over the next two days they experienced many activities for the first time. The boys were introduced to sailing, surfing, canoeing, target shooting, impromptu acting, crossing an obstacle course and “boere cooking” on a fire where they learned how to make bread. While the activities were exhausting in the summer heat, they enjoyed themselves and slept well at night. On their return to the school, they performed the School War Cry for their parents. ARTS & CULTURE DRAMA: BRIAN’S BRAIN

For its first show of 2019, Glenwood High School decided to do a play called Brian’s Brain, with a cast of 16 boys. Brian’s Brain is an abstract comedy about a Rugby student with an academic mind. The problem starts when he has to put his party-life behind him and start cramming for a test that determines his future.

Four Glenwood boys have been chosen as part of the cast for the Young Performers Project 2019 production CURTAIN UP.

The story is internalised and takes place within our student’s mind which was a great depiction of how the different parts of our minds and bodies function.

The production is scheduled to take place at the Elizabeth Sneddon Theatre from 15 May - 2 June. This show is backed by a fully professional production team, featuring well known professional actor and Glenwood Old Boy Mthokozisi Zulu, to perform alongside the cast.

Directed by Mr R. Le Roux of the English Department, the boys spent nine weeks rehearsing until they were ready for performance. The play opened on 12 March during the last week of Term 1 and ran for three nights in the intimate space of the drama studio.

Report by Ms M Loudon

Glenwood shared the stage with seven drama students from Danville Park Girls High School who presented a choreographed programme of poetry each night before the boys’ play. The boys would like to thank Bryan Hiles who designed and manufactured their very large head pieces to depict their part of the student’s brain. Report and photos by Ms M Loudon

Glenwood High school had three students attend the #youthforlions live wild workshop at Howard campus. The workshop was aimed at educating the youth on the canned lion industry and other pressing conservation issues. Part of the workshop involved a group activity where groups of eight had to present a campaign idea to promote Youth For Lions. Our boys, Makaira Kerkhoff (Form V), Alok More (Grade IV) and Odin Kerkhoff (Form III), were in the winning group with Kyra Foster of Northlands Girls High School, Sapna Pramjee of Eden College, Nokubonga Mthembu of UKZN and Siboniso Mthiyane of UNISA. They won a two day weekend in Hluhluwe-Umfolozi with Wildlife Act where they will spend the weekend monitoring and tracking threatened species such as rhino, wild dogs and lions. SPORT SWIMMING Training got underway for the 2019 swimming season as early as August last year under the guidance of the National Swimming Coach, Mr Graham Hill. Training sessions were well supported throughout the season despite the early morning starting time.

moved earlier in the season so as to be used as an indicator for team selection, particularly for the D&D Gala. Earlys House won the trophy for the Relay gala. Congratulations, must also go to McCabes for winning the Championship gala with some outstanding performances. The Junior Victor Ludorum was Joshua Botha and the Senior Victor Ludorum was Jon Brett Bridger.

The first few galas were swum as a time trial with no points being awarded. Under the leadership of the school swimming captain J Bridger, the swimmers began to develop their competitive edge and the times gradually began to improve.

The swimming season came to an exciting conclusion at the Durban and Districts Gala. On the evening of the gala our swimmers gave of their very best and achieved some pleasing results. Glenwood, unfortunately, finished in 4th position.

The first major gala saw the swimming team competing in the Alan Burt Top 10 gala. This year, Glenwood hosted the event which was held at Crawford College La Lucia owing to the fact that Kings Park was closed for repairs. Glenwood finished in 6th place. In 2020, the swimmers will travel to Pretoria to continue swimming in this traditional gala and we hope to improve on this year’s position.

Lessons were most certainly learnt this year and I know that the swimmers will work throughout the winter months to improve their times. The future of Glenwood swimming is most certainly a bright one. Mr T. van Reenen Swimming MIC

The Midmar Mile weekend is usually the busiest of the swimming season and this year was no different. Glenwood competed in the Westville Invitational Gala. Although the swimmers did not achieve their best times, the team spirit was really good. Many of the country’s top swimming schools were competing, including Grey College. As for the Midmar Mile itself, it was great to see more than 30 boys taking part. Messers J Robinson and T van Reenen also swam with the former competing in his 2nd mile and the latter his 25th. The Inter-house Championship and Relay Galas were

CHAMPIONSHIP GALA The Inter-house championship gala was held on Tuesday 12 February 2019. This is one of the highlights of the Glenwood sporting year. The swimming on the evening was of a really high standard with some outstanding performances from the boys. SPORT GOLF This has been a relatively quiet start to the year. Our two top players, George van Vuuren and Matthew Bruin achieved some exciting victories and I do think that the other players will follow. With maturity and course management we should achieve better results. The highlight so far is the brilliant performance of our top five players at the NOMADS TOP SCHOOL CHAMPS. The team outclassed some schools to end fourth out of 20 top schools. They were only five strokes behind second place, Westville Boys’ High School. George van Vuuren, Matthew Bruin and Nishalin Naidoo were chosen for the KZN Coastal Team. Our 2nd Team was very successful. They were victorious against the Gelofte and Crawford La Lucia First Teams. Mr R. Vermeulen MIC Golf

SQUASH As per tradition the Super 8 format was played in Term 1 against KZN top schools. Although we had a below average start to the year, we beat Michaelhouse, convincingly, at home in our last match. The St Andrews tour to Bloemfontein resulted in a 50% success rate. I am sure that, through the guidance and leadership of the captain, Sam Bowley, the results will improve. Mr R. Vermeulen MIC Squash

TENNIS We started the year off early and it was straight into practice for our 1st and 2nd teams. Many boys attended tennis practice as one of their sports for Term 1. We had a good turn-out of Form II students, with approximately 30 attending practices each time. This was a challenge with only having four courts to use for practice but we still managed to keep the practices very exciting. We had a similar turnout for our senior practice. Lots of enthusiasm was shown by the boys wanting to learn about tennis. Jahar Persad and Mpila Kheswa were chosen to represent the Durban and Districts team. Our 1st and 2nd team did not have as many fixtures in Term 1, but have more to come in Term 2. We are developing a good tennis spirit at Glenwood and are looking forward to seeing their development. SPORT CRICKET The cricket season started very early for Glenwood in 2019 as the 1st XI Cricket Team toured to Port Elizabeth for the Grey Cricket Festival hosted by Grey High School. The festival ran from 4 - 7 January and the Glenwood side played fixtures against Selborne, Pearson, Grey College and Grey High School. In hindsight, these matches would make up the bulk of our season due to the rainy months we would encounter on our return to KwaZulu-Natal. 2019 also saw the unveiling of the newly renamed “Linda Zondi Cricket Academy”. The Cricket Academy was restructured into three tiers with over 60 boys involved. Sadly, having three of our five matches rained out, we experienced a very short cricket season this term. Of these two fixtures, we played against Maritzburg College and Durban High School, with both these traditional school rivalries producing exciting and tight games. Glenwood 1st XI also competed in the Coca Cola Schools T20 competition and progressed through to the Coastal Final, beating Clifton College in the Semi-Final. Sadly, the 1st XI went down in a hard-fought Final against Westville Boys’ High. We were proud to see the selection of one of our matric boys, Lifa Ntanzi, to the SA U19 Cricket team which toured to India in February/March. Lifa was selected to compete in two Youth Test Matches and four Youth ODI’s. The “Green Machine” can be proud of its achievements this term and we are excited to see what the rest of the year has in store for us. Mr B. Scullard Director of Cricket

CRICKET ACADEMY Academy. Elite Academy consists of our top boys who have been identified as possible SA Schools cricketers. This Academy includes Mentorship and Mental Preparation sessions along with personalised gym programmes and testing. Mr Zayne Bux (CSA Level 2) heads up the Elite Program and has successfully seen Lifa Ntanzi selected for the SA u19 Cricket side that toured to India in February. High Performance Academy provides the boys with advanced skills sessions and match situation trainings that allow the boys to not only add skills to their game, but prepare for match specific situations. HP also allocates gym and conditioning sessions to the boys as well as physical testing to monitor their progress. Mr Alex van der Merwe (CSA Level 2) directs the boys towards achieving their personal goals and is unrelenting in his pursuit of excellence.

2019 was the start of the newly renamed Linda Zondi Cricket Academy. The boys started the year excited and ready to begin their cricket season! This year we also introduced three tiers of the Academy: Elite Academy, High Performance Academy and Normal

Normal Academy focuses on the foundation phase and the basic skills needed when playing cricket. Mr Devan James (CSA Level 2) takes the students through “game-improvement” training sessions and is in charge of those school boys who want to improve their cricket. Mr B. Scullard Director of Cricket

WYNBERG RUGBY FESTIVAL

Glenwood travelled down to Cape Town to play in the Wynberg Rugby Festival before they participated in the 2019 Edition of the illustrious World Schools’ Festival, which took place at Paul Roos Gymnasium.

In Glenwood’s first fixture they were up against King Edward VII School (KES). The intent was shown early on with both teams keeping possession and attacking the advantage line. KES scored the opening try. Glenwood responded immediately with a beautiful try in true Glenwood fashion to put them right back in the game. Glenwood continued to dominate the half, scoring four more tries, of which two came from handling errors made by KES deep inside their 22m. Glenwood went into the break leading 33-10. The second half lived up to the expectation created in the first half. KES scored two quick tries to reduce the lead, both tries from intercepts. KES came back into the game due to some handling errors but Glenwood hung on for a well fought victory of 46-38. Glenwood’s next fixture was against San Isidro from Argentina. It was always going to be a tough game, with the Argentines off a well-earned victory over Rondebosch Boys’ High. The boys from Argentina scored first after a couple of phases trying to find gaps in the Glenwood defence. The intensity was poor, with both teams making unforced

errors and losing possession. San Isidro scored 3 tries and Glenwood 2 in the first half with Glenwood leading 2019. However, both teams would rather forget this half with its unforced errors and poor defence. The second half turned out to be a battle of the boots as both teams relied heavily on their kickers to keep the scoreboard ticking over. San Isidro

ACADEMIES The Glenwood Sports Academies were established and have been functioning since 2002. Glenwood has invested a great deal into the Academies over the years. Top coaches and mentors facilitate these Academies. Recently during assembly old boys Donn Stewart and Daniel Sibbald were honoured. The Water Polo Academy has been named the Donn Stewart Water Polo Academy and the Hockey Academy will in future be named the Daniel Sibbald Hockey Academy. Donn Stewart is a South African Water Polo player, who has, over the past few years, represented South Africa many times and Daniel Sibbald is a South African Hockey player, who has represented South Africa several times.

took the lead early on. Both teams kept the game in the balance until the very last minute where San Isidro was penalised for being offside at the ruck. Jordan Hendrikse stepped up and slotted the penalty to give Glenwood a glorious but nail-biting 33-31 victory. Report by Mr A van der Merwe

WORLD SCHOOLS RUGBY FESTIVAL

SPORT

The World Schools’ Festival kicked off on the 25th of March 2019 in the Markotter Stadium in Stellenbosch. Some of South Africa’s top schools played against teams from the rest of the world in what turned out to be a real treat for schoolboy rugby fans. Glenwood kicked off the tournament against John McGlashan College (JMC) from Dunedin. This College is famous for the few All Black players they have produced, of which Andrew Hore, who represented the All Blacks in 2013, is the latest. With their big forwards they were looking to be the first upset of the festival. Both teams dominated the first half with some exciting passages of play. It was Glenwood however who drew first blood as scrumhalf Nico Steyn pounced on a loose ball to dot it down. The conversion from Jonas was good and Glenwood had an early 7-0 lead. Minutes later, Nico again kicked the ball downfield, deep into their 22m where Glenwood winger Katleho Thamaga gave chase to score their 2nd try of the match. Unfortunately, the conversion was missed, but Glenwood now had a lead of 12-0.

JMC reduced the gap just before half time when Harrison Morton dived over from a ruck. The conversion was good. Glenwood still lead 12-7. JMC was penalized on the stroke of half time and Joe Jonas added the extra three points for a 15-7 lead at the break.

JMC started the 2nd half way better with 8th man, Leeroy Ferguson, dragging a couple of defenders with him over the try line to score. The conversion was unsuccessful, but the lead reduced to 15-12. The rest of the half belonged to the Glenwood backline - fierce, relentless and exciting. They showed what they are capable of as they scored 3 more tries. Substitute winger Marthino van Wyk ran in two tries, dancing his way through the defence, and Nico Steyn provided great supportive play to score the next try. Two of the three tries were converted. Glenwood’s backline proved to be the clear difference be-

11

tween the two sides. The final score was 32-17 for Glenwood. In Glenwood’s second game, they faced the Africa Pacific Dragons. For the first 40 minutes it was quite a close encounter with the score at 14-10 with Nico Steyn and Freddie Slabbert scoring for Glenwood. Africa Pacific Dragon’s centre, David Kalekale scored twice to keep them in the game. Glenwood seemed to have too much fire power for the Dragons as they scored another 3 tries in 20 minutes to seal the game. A 33-10 victory for the Green Machine from Durban. Report by Mr A van der Merwe

SCHOOL NOTES NIGHT MARKET AND MOVIE NIGHT Friday 1 March brought a unique event to Dixons Field (the front field of the School). For the first time, a fundraising event was held whereby food and arts and crafts were sold, and then a movie was shown on the field. The area was cordoned off and boys, parents, friends, and supporters could sit and relax on the field and watch a movie. The atmosphere was indeed electric and entertaining. The cosy setting of blankets, pillows and camp chairs proved to be most popular. The movie was preceded by another unique event, the LipSync Battle which also proved to be very entertaining. The evening was indeed a great success and the funds raised surpassed all expectations. Indeed an event to be pencilled in for the future. Miss J Barkhuizen Teaching Staff

“ADOPT-A-SCHOOL-WEEK” The SPCA in Durban has embarked upon an “adopt-aschool-week” whereby food, items of clothing and general necessary commodities for pets and animals are collected and then donated to the SPCA by the various schools. The Glenwood RCL took ownership of this project and more than 500 items were collected and then delivered to the SPCA in Springfield Park. The boys who went to the SPCA found this visit a humbling and tragic experience. The boys witnessed first hand the living conditions of these animals and, for some, their emotions almost overwhelmed them. Miss J Barkhuizen Teaching Staff
