elcome to our June edition. Is it a coincidence that the EU referendum is at the same time as the European Cup Football? We will undoubtedly be gripped as a nation with patriotic fervour and the success or failure of our national team may largely determine whether we stay or leave Europe at the referendum on 23rd June! I think an early exit for our football team could easily see a big swing to the out vote and vice versa. Six months of campaigning reduced to the outcome of a few simple games of football! In the meantime, we will be getting on with enjoying a busy summer with local events galore. Wigginton sounds like the place to be on 4th June with a Family Tennis Festival at the Tennis Club and the annual Community Fair and Craft Competition at St Nicholas Church. Join the fun at Strensall Carnival on 25th June and everyone is celebrating the

Queen’s birthday - see our events listings for more. Last month Harmonia Ladies Choir excelled at the National Choirs Day at the Eskdale Festival winning 3 trophies. The 55 choir members (including myself!) sang their hearts out. Amateur singing seems to be exploding in popularity and rightly so as it has been shown to improve both psychological and physical health. You can come and see us at the De Grey Rooms in York on 2nd July along with York Philharmonic Male Voice choir who also won a trophy at the Festival. There are a couple of big anniversary celebrations happening this month. It is 100 years since Cub Scouts was formed and the 2nd Haxby Cub troop have been busy preparing to celebrate this month. Read more on page 8. St Mary’s Church in Strensall is celebrating 150 years – see more page 12. Don’t forget to celebrate your Dad on Sunday 16th June. Buy him some beers and snacks and sit him down to watch to football in peace!

Were you a Cub in York? Or have you been involved with Cubs in York? Haxby and Wigginton Cub Scouts will join other groups across the nation to celebrate the Cubs centenary, an event that hopes to be ‘the Wildest Party Ever’!

S

arah Bellwood, member of the York Cubs100 committee and Leader of the 2nd Haxby and Wigginton Falcons pack, said: “Cub scouting is as popular as ever as York groups prepare to celebrate the centenary. “We have three events lined up to mark the milestone, and we are hoping for 600 to 700 Cubs to be involved in the celebrations. We are inviting anyone who’s been involved in the past to take part in the festivities.” First to take place is the ‘Thank You’ event on 18th June in St Sampson’s Square, York. Local Cub groups would like to invite anyone who’s helped with Cub Scouts in the York area as a way of saying a massive ‘thanks’ for their time and effort. Anyone who has been involved in the Cub movement, past or present, can get in touch with Sarah Bellwood, details below, to arrange an official invite. There will be refreshments at the event, an opportunity to share memories and stories and the chance to receive a special commemorative coin. Event two is a City Camp for all Cub packs, taking place the Snowball Plantation near Stockton-on-theForest, York in July. Pack leaders show now have details about this event. The third and final event takes place on 16th December and will be a huge party for all Cubs, Leaders and helpers to mark the official 100th birthday of the Cub movement. At 19:16hrs precisely, all those present will say ‘The Promise’ in unison, as will all Cub packs up and down the country – an emotional moment to mark the centenary of this wonderful organisation. And 2016 is a double celebration as the 2nd Haxby and Wigginton Scout Group has its 70th birthday. The very first Scout group in Haxby and Wigginton

was called the 1st Haxby Troop, registered in 1927. Four years later, the 1st Wigginton Scout Group was established. The date of this group’s closure is not certain but in January 1946, the 2nd Haxby and Wigginton Scout Group was formed. Today the group includes two Beaver colonies, three Cub Packs, and two Scout Troops. If you would further information, contact Sarah Bellwood on yorkcubs100@gmail.com or call 0758 3860949

18th June - Thank You Event St Sampsons Square, York. Anyone who has been involved with York Cubs is welcome to attend. Refreshments, share memories and stories and receive a commemorative coin. Contact Sarah on 0758 3860949 or yorkcubs100@gmail.com 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

St Mary’s Church Strensall celebrates 150 years

D

id you know that this year St Mary’s Church in Strensall celebrates 150 years of service to our community? In-fact, there has been a church on this site for almost 900 years. The first church, dedicated to St James, was built between 1100 and 1150. Over the years that Norman Church fell into disrepair and a new church was built on the original foundations in 1804. By 1863 it was in a very dilapidated condition so it was replaced. In May 1865, the foundation stone of the present building was laid and the building was consecrated by the Archbishop of York, William Thompson, on 25th July 1866. At that time the name of the church changed from St. James to St Mary the Virgin. We are not sure why the name changed but many

churches in the Victorian era were designated St Mary the Virgin. That was 150 years ago, and the building is still the base from which we prayerfully seek to serve the wider community. We do this by being there for everyone in Strensall and Towthorpe. As well as our popular Sunday services we are there for weddings, baptisms and funerals; running Little Fishes, Junior Church and Soup Socials; supporting the work of Kidz Klub, our Art Group and everyone who uses the church hall, and we endeavour to support the wider community whenever we can. On Sunday 12th June at 10.30am we will be having a special service of celebration when we will be joined by the Bishop of Selby and many others who have been involved with the life of our church

and community in Strensall. If you have any connection with St Mary’s, why not come along and join us? We have so much to give thanks for and you will be very welcome to come and share your stories. Written by Rev. Martin Harrison

fter more than 30 years working abroad, a York man has returned to start an organisation that promotes a mature and experienced workforce. “Having worked abroad in the automotive, pest control, financial services, music businesses and numerous social organisations, it was about time I returned to my roots, to the best city in Britain”, said Brian Davis. “I’m not the type to sit around for long and saw The50plus Organisation as the perfect opportunity. I had noticed a large demand for handyman, plumbing and electrical services and a large pool of talent and experience available at the more mature end of the workforce”. The50plus seeks to retain the trust and support of the company’s customers and employees. This ensures our staff and customers know how long jobs are likely to take, how they will be done, and what will be charged. We will never over-sell. To achieve this we practice fairness and honesty in all our dealings.

In business for some 14 years, the company’s workforce has an average age well in excess of the norm, but now also employs some youngsters and even a young apprentice! We have now been operating in York over a year and have numerous testimonials with Rated People. Our call centre, open during office hours, can offer help and advice as well as arrange a visit for an estimate if that is required, you can even book a job directly online and join your50plus for a discount. SUMMER PUDDING Ready in 1 hour plus overnight chilling time. Serves 6-8

1

Place all the fruit in a large saucepan with the sugar and 3 tbsp cold water. Heat gently, stirring occasionally, until the sugar has dissolved. Simmer gently for 2-3 minutes until the juices begin to run. Remove the pan from the heat and set aside.

2 3

Cut away the crusts from the slices of bread. Cut a round of bread from one slice to fit the base of a 1.2 litre pudding basin. Cut the rest of the slices in half lengthways.

This is a classic summer British dessert made with just a few simple ingredients. Make the day before serving to allow plenty of time for the sweet berry juices to soften the bread. Serve with softly whipped cream, Greek style yoghurt or tangy crème fraiche. INGREDIENTS: • 275g small strawberries, hulled and halved • 275g raspberries • 175g blueberries

Strain off some of the juice from the fruit into a shallow dish. Line the pudding basin with cling film, allowing it to overhang the sides. Dip the round of bread in the strained juice and use to line the base of the basin. Use most of the slices to line around the sides of the basin, dipping each one in the juice and overlapping the slices as you go, so there are no gaps.

4 5 6

Use a slotted spoon to spoon all the fruits into the bread-lined basin, pressing down gently. Cover completely with the rest of the bread slices, trimming them to fit as necessary.

Spoon over a little of the remaining juice then cover with a saucer that fits just inside the top of the basin and weigh down with weights or food cans. Chill in the fridge overnight. Reserve the remaining juice.

To serve, remove the weights and invert the pudding onto a lipped plate. Remove the cling film. Pour over the reserved juices and decorate with a fresh strawberry.

• 100g black or red currants, removed from stalks • 175g caster sugar • 10 large slices medium-sliced white bread (preferably one day old) • 1 whole strawberry, to decorate

TIP Take care not to overcook the fruit in step one. All the berries should be just softened but still holding their shape. 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BOOKS FOR DAD Struggling for inspiration this Father’s Day? Forget gift vouchers and gardening tools, books are the way to go. Whether Dad likes escaping into a thriller, getting creative with the kids, or cooking up a storm in the kitchen, there’s sure to be something in our selection to keep him happy.

Conspiracy

Iain Gale Bernard Cornwell fans will thank you for introducing them to Iain Gale’s series about a maverick soldier in the Peninsular War. James Keane certainly gets himself in enough scrapes and mishaps to keep the reader entertained. Well-researched, gritty and colourful, the series brings a period of military history to life. The latest novel, Conspiracy, sees Keane ordered by Wellington to work undercover in Paris – a dangerous task indeed in such a turbulent political landscape.

50 Evening Adventures

Tim, Kerry, Ella and Amy Meek Another great resource for tackling the ‘I’m bored’ mantra, 50 Evening Adventures provides a plethora of ideas for making the most of evenings as a family. There are suggestions for places to go, things to do and meals to cook outside. Former teachers Tim and Kerry Meek are currently travelling around Europe in a caravan with their daughters. They’re used to packing lightly, so most of the suggestions don’t need any special equipment, and can be carried out for free, or very cheaply.

The Hairy Bikers Blood, Sweat and Tyres: The Autobiography

Dave Myers and Si King If Dad enjoys an autobiography, this is the perfect book to wrap up for him this Father’s Day. The duo didn’t have the easiest childhoods; Si was bullied about his weight, while Dave had to grow up quickly as a carer for his mother. But a love of good food and entertaining brought them together and made them household names. Warm, honest and laugh-out -loud funny, it’s a great testament to what true friends can do when they put their minds to it.

Poor Boy Road

James L. Weaver Fast-paced and gripping from the first page, Poor Boy Road is a good bet for fans of action thrillers. 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Jake Caldwell is a mob-enforcer who’s looking for a way out. When he’s called back to his childhood town to help care for his dying, abusive father, his boss hands him one last job – kill a local drug dealer. But can he do it? Great characters, believable dialogue and plenty of action combine to make this a real page-turner.

The Den Book

Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield Packed with creative inspiration, The Den Book is full of ideas to encourage Dad to get outside and have fun with the kids (or grandkids). Whether they want a forest hideaway, a fairy tent or a full-on fort, instructions are easy to follow, and many of the dens don’t require any special materials. Published by Frances Lincoln, it costs £12.99, so you should have enough funds left over to invest in some tarpaulin and twine.

More Home Comforts

James Martin Aspiring chefs and good honest cooks alike will enjoy this book. As the name implies, it’s packed with ideas for tasty, honest comfort food. Recipes are straightforward, with each step well explained. Most ingredients can be easily picked up at the supermarket, although a few will require a bit more forward planning. More than 100 recipes are included, many of which have been shown in the TV series. Dad will soon be whipping you up Beer Can Piri Piri Chicken, Lamb Belly with BBQ Sauce & Pickled Red Onion, or just some good old chocolate brownies. SOCIETY’S SUPERHEROES BY MARY MAHON

Undeniably, superheroes have become an intrinsic part of our culture. Every few months we can enjoy a new blockbuster hit from Marvel or DC, whether it’s an innovative adaption of an old hero reborn in a fresh way, a continuation of a never-ending film series or something entirely new - there’s so much to choose from! Because of this superhero craze, when people hear the word ‘hero’, it’s generally affiliated with men and women running around in spandex and a cape, sporting powers, gadgets and ninja skills. However, I’ve realised that as you get older, you begin to realise that there are real life superheroes all around us, and just like Superman’s façade as ‘Clark Kent’, they’re hidden in plain sight… With each day lacking the security and the promise that they’ll see the next tomorrow, soldiers are the ultimate, self-sacrificing heroes, dedicating themselves to their country and their people. Scientists and inventors: they serve the greater good through devoting themselves to research in order for us to better our world. These heroes are helping our world in so many countless ways, all the way from biological breakthroughs that save millions of lives, to physics phenomena that open our eyes to the secrets of the universe, to inspiring inventions that change life as we know it. Protestors are true reflections of people who stand up for what they believe is right even when the whole world seems to be against them, whether it’s fighting for the smaller things like the protection of a certain woodlands, or world-changing movements like

26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the Civil Rights Movement under the iconic hero Martin Luther King Jr. Similarly, there are so many charity workers in our society who willingly give up their time for the greater good with no personal or material gain, and those who fight physical and mental conditions are irrefutably heroic, spending their time constantly fighting internal battles with every ounce of their strength. Although they may not have vivacious costumes or superhuman gifts, heroes are all around us, and it’s because of them that we have such an incredible world to live in. Next time you see these cinematic superheroes plastered to the sides of buses, dominating the internet and sported all over clothing, maybe spare a thought to the real superheroes that live amongst us.

LATEST THINKING IN DENTISTRY Dear Reader, My nurse Jan and I recently attended the 2016 Dentistry Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Contrary to popular belief there are new and exciting by Christine Parker developments in the dental BDS (GDC 72136) business every week and whilst we are still awaiting the development of the elusive ‘quiet drill’ which makes no sound and the ability to fully repair teeth to be available on a global scale, there were plenty of ideas and information being bounced around. For example, did you know that the main reason for children to have a general anaesthetic in this country is for the removal of their teeth, this shocking statistic has barely changed in 30 years. Here at Howardian Dental we pride ourselves on being involved in the prevention of oral disease as much as its treatment. Much of our appointment is spent homing in on specific causes of dental disease in each patient so we can tailor the advice we give to each one. As a child I was aways told not to eat so many sweeties (my teeth were clean but I still needed lots of fillings) it wasn’t until I went to University and it was explained that it was how often I was eating and drinking that was causing the problem. I actually had few sweets but tended to snack a lot on savoury items. The penny dropped and since then 2 fillings in 20 years (both fractures).

It’s not magic it’s science

MOTORING

By James Baggott

BMW At The Movies There’s no greater advert for a car than a starring role in a movie – and for BMW there have been a few! One of the biggest was when BMW took over the Bond franchise with a centrepiece in 1995 blockbuster GoldenEye. Bond, played by Pierce Brosnan, drives a Z3 around Cuba before the final mission. As with many Bond cars, the Z3 was kitted out with the latest gadgets, including a parachute braking system, all-point radar, missiles housed behind the headlights, and the iconic ejector seat. Brosnan returned in Tomorrow Never Dies which included one of the most impressive Bond cars, thanks to the amount of tech on-board - a 750iL with bulletproof windows, electrified door handles, tear gas, spike dispenser and missiles concealed in the roof. Most impressively, the car could be remote controlled from a touchpad in Bond’s phone. BMW’s most recent appearance in the Bond franchise was with the Z8 roadster in The World Is Not Enough. Sadly, this met with an unfortunate end when a helicopter wielding a circular saw cut the car in half at a caviar factory. It was fitted with surface-to-air missiles and it even had six cup holders - very useful.

pursuing in a Peugeot 406. Through tunnels and against the motorway traffic, the M5’s sporting pedigree is shown off, until it is taken down by a pot shot from Jean Reno, causing the M5 to flip. We jump forward with our final car on the list to 2011. Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol involved one of the best concept designs, the Vision EfficientDynamic from 2009, the pre-cursor to the i8 electric sports car. It was involved in the final act where Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, needed to intercept the film’s protagonist and prevent the start of a nuclear war. The V ED swept in and out of the Mumbai traffic and with a special HUD with navigation screen it looked pretty cool too. Other honourable mentions for BMW include the black and orange E24 633 CSi from Back to the Future II, the E28 5 Series from The Bourne Supremacy and Robert De Niro’s E31 850i from heist movie, The Score.

As a main character, Jason Statham’s E38 735i in 2002’s The Transporter is pretty key, with much of the early action involving the 7 Series. One of its best moments is the chase following the bank robbery. Noted for its driving sequences, 1998 film Ronin involved plenty of action. A spectacular car chase took place involving a BMW E34 M5 driven by Natascha McElhone’s Deirdre, with Robert De Niro

CROATIA

By Solange Hando

The Plitvice Lakes

But nothing beats a leisurely stroll where lush scenery and fresh air quieten mind, body and soul. The lakes beckon, more bewitching the closer you are. Azure, silvery grey, deep blue or emerald green, shimmering in the sun or mirroring a darkening sky, they are for ever changing as light and shade filter through the abundant foliage along the banks.

S

et up in 1949 in northern Croatia, the Plitvice Lakes are the oldest national park in the country and the largest, covering close to 300 square kilometres. There, on the edge of the rugged Dinaric Alps, rocks and water have created a unique landscape protected by UNESCO and one of the most impressive karst formations in the world. Yet just 400 years ago, the whole area was inaccessible, draped in mystery and legends from buried treasures to the kind-hearted Black Queen who gave water to the poor. In the 18th century, it was described in turn as ‘five beautiful lakes in the densest wood’ and ‘the devil’s garden’. But those who come here today know that neither is true: there is no devil in this natural paradise but there are 16 beautiful lakes for all to see. The twelve upper lakes and four

54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

lower lakes are all connected, divided by natural limestone barriers shaped by water, wind and plants and creating myriad waterfalls. The highest is the aptly named ‘Large Waterfall’, swollen by the Plitvica river and tumbling down 78 metres into the final section of the lower lakes. Just a stone’s throw away, the source of the Korana is said to be the most beautiful in karst country, heading through the canyon towards a bucolic village dozing in flower meadows. Meanwhile, footpaths and singlefile boardwalks meander from one magical lake to the next, festooned in waterfalls, canyons and caves, and whatever the crowds, little disturbs the peace but the rumbling of cascades and bird song. There are popular viewpoints and secluded corners, steps here and there and for those who want to take it easy, rides on an electric boat across Lake Kozjak or a panoramic train in the upper levels.

The lower lakes glitter through a rocky canyon, the upper lakes nestle among forested slopes rising to 1,279 metres. Mediterranean and Alpine plants mingle with fir, spruce and beech and in the remote areas of the north-west, trees are up to 700 years old. Over 1,100 plant species have been recorded in the park, including 75 endemic and 55 different orchids. Gentians and lilies add colour in the undergrowth and grassy bells and wild hyacinths grow alongside endangered species such as the carnivorous round leaf sundew. Spring heather, beard grass and mint are also found along the lakes where maple and sumac trees turn all shades of red and gold in autumn. Wild cats, lynx, deer and wolves all live in the park but the brown bear has become the true symbol of the Plitvice Lakes. Yet visitors on a day trip from the beach are far more likely to spot the butterflies, an Orange Tip, a Painted Lady, a Red Admiral, to name just a few, and at least some of the 105 species of birds, woodpeckers, grebes, larks, finches and others, or perhaps a rare golden eagle hovering in the thermals high above the glistening lakes.

T

he magnificent Nave of York’s famous Minster will be transformed into a 1,000-seater theatre this Summer as the epic Mystery Plays return to the stage.

16 years and only the second time in their near 700 year history that the Mystery Plays have been performed at York Minster, following sell-out performances in 2000.

The plays dramatise the greatest story ever told – from the creation of heaven and earth to the last judgement. It’s the first time in

The plays, which run from 26 May to 30 June, feature lead actor, Phillip McGinley playing the role of Jesus. Philip, who was born in Lancashire, is best known for his roles as archer Anguy in HBO series Game of Thrones and as Tom Kerrigan in Coronation Street. Alongside Phillip will be hundreds of members of the Yorkshire community involved as cast members and behind the scenes on everything from prop and costume making to stage building and make-up. Vivienne Faull, Dean of York Minster, commented: “After a gap of 16 years it is a great pleasure and enormously exciting to stage the Mystery Plays at York Minster again. The stories of the plays are stamped across the very fabric of the cathedral, from the carvings in the stonework to the stained-glass in the Great East Window, which depicts the cycles dramatised in the Plays. We hope experiencing the performances in such an extraordinary setting will be a truly moving experience.”

Tickets can be purchased online at www.yorkminster.org/ mysteryplays2016 by calling 01904 623568 or in person from the York Theatre Royal’s Box Office at the De Grey Rooms in St Leonards Place, York, and at York Minster’s visitor admission desks.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SHORT STORY THE WEDDING PLANNER by Jackie Brewster

“Where to start?” Dufty leafed through the curling pages of his spiral bound notebook. “It’s not exactly a PowerPoint presentation, is it?” Gina remarked. “Be fair love,” Terry said, “he’s giving us a free consultation.” With every glossy bridal magazine Gina brought home, Terry could see their agreed budget becoming a distant memory. Decisive action was required, so he’d brought her to the Nag’s Head beer garden for an appointment with Dufty’s bespoke wedding planning service.

“He did our Karen’s photos,” Gina smiled, “and they were lovely.” “There you go,” Dufty said, “you hire him, but on the day I’ll stand behind him and take snaps of everything he takes photos of. Then you don’t need to buy his.” “That seems a bit dishonest to me,” Gina scowled. “It’ll save money,” Terry said.

“Venue,” said Dufty, scratching behind his ear. “Terry says you’ve got something posh in mind.”

“It’s my big day.” Gina stuck out her bottom lip. “I don’t want anything dodgy.”

“I fancied a stately home, you know, with marble pillars and chandeliers,” Gina pouted, “but Terry doesn’t like the price.”

“You’re quite right, love,” Terry nodded. “Got any other ideas, mate?”

“How about this alternative?” Dufty said. “You can use my farmyard. Pop down a tarpaulin, chuck some rugs over the hay bales and Bob’s your uncle.” “But what about the pigs?” Gina sniffed. “They won’t mind,” Dufty said. “Think about it, love,” Terry said, “we’re on a tight budget.” “I’m not getting married in a pigsty.” Gina folded her arms. “Alright, keep your chandeliers.” Dufty chewed the end of his pencil. “We’ll just make our savings elsewhere.” “What about the honeymoon?” Terry asked. “Right, boss.” Dufty fetched a business card out of his back pocket. “How about this? My mate Trumpy’s got a static by the steelworks. There’s a transport café next door so you could have a fry up every morning.” “I’m not staying anywhere owned by a bloke called Trumpy,” Gina snapped. “Don’t be like that love,” Terry said, “he can’t help his nickname.” Dufty moved quickly on. “Here’s an idea that’ll work a dream for your wedding photographs.” Gina waited to be unimpressed. “You hire that flashy photographer from town, you know, the one who perms his own hair.”

“Here’s an idea to save you a few bob,” Dufty said cheerfully, checking his notes. “You know that posh restaurant that always has fancy flower arrangements? If you hang around their bins at night, you can get yourself some beauties.” “I’m not having dead flowers,” Gina said decisively. “They’re never quite dead,” Dufty said, mildly offended. “Besides, we’ll need a big bouquet to cover the stain on that charity shop wedding dress I’ve got my eye on.” “Stop right there!” Gina held up her hand. “Thanks for your time Dufty, but I won’t be requiring your services.” “Sure love?” Terry said. “Dufty comes highly recommended.” “Thanks but no thanks. I can handle this wedding, and bring it in on budget.” She sighed. “Perhaps I don’t need chandeliers after all.” Before Dufty could interrupt she added, “You can forget about the pigsty though.” “I hear the church hall’s available.” Terry squeezed her hand. “Would look lovely with a bit of bunting.” “Fine,” Gina said, “but I’ll organise everything else.” “Sorry mate, looks like you won’t be needed after all.” Terry faked an apologetic smile. “Let me buy you a pint for your time.” A pint had been the agreed price for Dufty’s entire wedding planning service, which he had just delivered in full, and to complete satisfaction.

HAXBY HELPERS – GOOD NEIGHBOUR SCHEME CELEBRATES 30 YEARS

H

axby Helpers have been offering a helping hand in Haxby and Wigginton since 1986. During that time, they have helped on well over 10,000 occasions. In the main it is the elderly who use the service. They may need taking to the shops in the village or need someone to shop for them, collect prescriptions or take them for appointments or social gatherings. John and Christine Wright, who are regular clients, say “Having Haxby Helpers popping in to chat and collect items from the local shops is a blessing. The co-ordinators are very cheerful and obliging. It’s nice to have a conversation with them. We are

so grateful for this community service and hope that it will continue.” The army of around 50 volunteers are never asked to do more than one job each week, and this almost always takes less than an hour. The job of matching clients to helpers is undertaken by a small team of co-ordinators. One of them, Margaret Beech says “In a busy week we might have around 40 requests – and it is our proud boast that we are normally able to help everyone”. Every house in Haxby and Wigginton receives a card with contact details every two years. Notices are also displayed in the health centre, dentists etc which means that every household

knows that the service is there should they need it. The service is free and no-one is paid. Their modest costs are met by small grants from Haxby Town Council, The Outlook, Haxby and Wigginton Methodist Church, Wigginton Parish Council, City of York Haxby and Wigginton Ward Grant and Haxby Carnival. In order to continue to offer this kind of help, volunteers are always needed. If you think you can help please ring the Duty Co-ordinator on 750266. Anyone seeking help should contact the same number. “We see no reason why we shouldn’t carry on for another 30 years”, says Margaret Beech, “but I guess we will be clients rather than co-ordinators by then.”

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

Tackling Troublesome Weeds By Pippa Greenwood

Why is it that weeds always seem to grow faster and more vigorously than pretty well anything you actually choose to plant in your garden? Top of my weed hate list is hairy bittercress (Cardamine hirsuta), which produces a little rosette of leaves topped with a short spike with tiny white flowers, and I despise it because it spreads so quickly. Weeds are typically described as ‘any plant which is growing in the wrong place’ such as your flowerbeds, your vegetable garden, your shrubbery or your lawn.

So what makes weeds such a nuisance? • They feed and take up moisture in great quantities and sometimes compete actively with nearby garden plants. • They can create shade and stunt the growth of nearby plants. • Those with a ground-cover like effect can cause the growth of garden plants to be distorted or held back. • Weeds may harbour pests or diseases. So what can you do to try to minimise the problems they cause without spending hours with a hoe or sprayer? • Get on top of weeds early

in the year - removing as many as possible before your garden plants start to grow strongly makes weeding easier and cuts down on the amount of competition the weeds cause. A hoe is one of the quickest ways to effectively kill off most annual weeds, but it needs to be a good one. • Disturb the soil as little as possible when you weed to prevent dormant weed seeds from germinating. • Some people avoid anything other than an early weeding

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE and a late weeding, as they find that regular weeding seems to bring more seeds to the surface and encourages germination. • Remove your weeds before they set seed. • Avoid composting any weeds which are setting seed, have set seed or have particularly pernicious and resilient roots (dock and dandelion are classic examples of these). • When removing deep-rooted weeds such as dock and dandelion, always make sure that you take out every fragment of root, as each piece left behind has the potential to form a new plant. The best tool I know for removing dandelion roots is my little red-handled weeder, see www.pippagreenwood. com/products/good-growing for more information. • Don’t take a short cut by

68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

rotovating ground which is heavily infested with weeds such as dandelions, docks, nettles or couch grass, as you’ll be chopping up their roots and helping to create more plants! • If you want to sow annuals or vegetable crops directly and minimise later problems with weeds, then try the stale seedbed technique. Prepare the area you intend to sow well in advance of your proposed seed sowing date, which allows dormant weed seeds to germinate; remove the weed seedlings and then sow or plant up as you wish. This should give you fewer problems later on. • Many weeds can be kept at bay if you cover the soil surface with two to three inches (5 – 7.5 cm) of mulch. • Use weedkillers with caution and ensure you choose one

appropriate for the problem you have. Weedkillers are designed to kill off plants and they can do a lot of damage if allowed to contaminate your garden. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, Nemaslug, biological controls, pop-up crop covers, signed books and lots more besides.

OVERWEIGHT HORSES You may have heard the alarming statistic of Diabetes prevalence doubling in the last few years in the human population, and horrifying pictures of obese dogs and cats are frequently on our screens. Sadly the problem of overweight horses is also one that must be addressed as these individuals are prone to dreadful painful and sometimes deadly problems like laminitis, arthritis, heart disease and hyperlipaemia (fat in the bloodstream). Before domestication horses lived on extensive areas as opportunistic grazers and the wild horse gained weight in summer and lost it in leaner times over winter. Clearly this happens less readily when modern horses are fed, rugged and housed over winter and they become increasingly overweight leading to a trilogy of equine metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance and an increased circulating cortisol which can spark off laminitis. Have a look at the ‘Fat Horse Slim’ information on the Blue cross website for really useful tips on assessing your horse’s weight and using diet, exercise and management to help you. Clients often tell me that they struggle but here is a before and after photo of a successful pony ‘Dusty’ who has recently struggled with a painful bout of laminitis where the pedal bone had rotated within the hoof. A strict diet regime has been followed and within 3 weeks he lost 37 kilograms and is beginning to look more svelte-there is still a way to go but it can be done! I know the feeling ‘Dusty’ and am resisting cake as I write this! Clare Brash B Vet Med MRCVS Station House Vets www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 73

Speedwell Blue (Ode to Sally) By The Pastoral Poet The Summer sky is speedwell blue, And swallows cleave the balmy air. The turtle dove’s caressing coo, Is softer than a whispered prayer. And Sally, tender in my arms; Lost in the landscape of some dream, I cup her face with gentle palms, Fearful I might break the theme. The loving cup is over brimmed, And topped anew each time I drink. A prized possession, golden rimmed, Whose heady contents never shrink. When swallows wing to warmer climes, And leave the headlands they once knew. Not caring we of changing times, When skies are ever speedwell blue. Clive Milson
