W

elcome to our December edition.

At the time of writing (at the beginning of November), we’re eagerly waiting Paley’s Greengrocers in Malton our neighbour - to start selling Christmas trees. We just need to find our lights and baubles in amongst the piles of old magazines and boxes. If only Christmas was that simple! Luckily our local Ryedale businesses have got Christmas sorted for you! This edition has everything you might need for the perfect festive season whether you’re staying in with family or going out. And there is a bonanza of Christmas services, fairs, parties, carols and pantos. Helmsley Panto, on our cover, with its cast of over 50 local people will make a great start to your festive season. As this is the last magazine of a very busy year, I’d like to say thank you to everyone who has supported the Handy Mag. Firstly to our advertisers without whom we couldn’t provide such a comprehensive local service. Secondly to the brilliant Acorn Web Offset who print the Handy Mags so consistently throughout the year and our local Royal Mail posties who deliver our heavy editions to over 53,000 letterboxes each month. Thirdly to you the people who read and use the Handy Mags supporting local services and attending local events. And finally to my fantastic team – Nicky, Mandy, Phil, Lucy and everyone else we work with who have toiled so hard all year to ensure the magazines go to print on time and are filled with interesting local information. As a small local independent team I think they do an amazing job! Here’s to an even more successful 2020!

WHEN YOU WERE A CHILD, YOU KNEW WHAT YOU WANTED FOR CHRISTMAS... By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at PenLife Associates

SANTA IS COMING TO TOWN

Santa and his sleigh are heading their way around Ryedale with the help of both Ryedale Lions and Malton & Norton Lions clubs. occasion for the whole community,” said Brian.

RYEDALE LIONS CLUB

Santa and his band of helpers from Ryedale Lions Club begin their annual sleigh tour at the Pickering Christmas lights switch-on (November 30). Then Father Christmas will be flying around some 30 towns and villages of north Ryedale over the next three weeks to make it a Christmas to remember for children and grown-ups who come out to meet him. Santa’s elves from the Lions Club will be with the sleigh and collecting door-to-door in their biggest fund-raising event of the year, hoping to top the £9,000 collected last year. The largest beneficiaries from this year’s collection will be three charities based in the Ryedale area: Ryedale Carers, Wilf Ward Trust and the Encephalitis Society. “The delight on the faces of children enjoying their special visit from Father Christmas is a real sight to see. But most importantly, it means we shall be able to raise muchneeded money to help many local and deserving causes,” said Ryedale Lions sleigh organiser, Brian Johnson. This year, more of Santa’s visits to the smaller villages will have a central fixed stop around the main street or village hall so that as many people as possible can have a chance of seeing him. “We hope these villages will take the opportunity to make it a real festive

Progress reports and detailed info on Santa’s sleigh routes can be found at www.ryedalelions.org. The planned schedule for Ryedale Lions Santa sleigh (subject to weather) is below. Locations marked in italics will be a central fixed stop. Other locations listed will be street tours.

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Christmas

I always find each year passes by far too quickly. Christmas preparations begin earlier each year. We await the John Lewis TV advert, trees go up in houses worldwide and the big day arrives after 24 advent calendar chocolates have been eaten. Presents are opened, Christmas dinner is just as delicious as it is every year and the leftovers are grazed for the next few days. After all the busyness, the only thing I truly treasure each Christmas day isn’t the presents, the big dinner, the decorations or the annual viewing of DIE HARD, it’s definitely my family.

‘Love is a gift’, a short film directed by Phil Beastall is my utmost favourite Christmas film. If you’d like to watch it, it is available to view on YouTube. Made on a tiny budget of £50, the film follows a man counting down the days till Christmas. He finally reaches the 25th and listens to the final cassette tape after 10 years that his late mother left him. It’s an incredibly powerful short film that feels relatable and does so with a simple premise and emotive script. There are no ‘bells and whistles’ like other festive films. It simply shows that Christmas isn’t a happy time for everyone. In my experience I know that the first Christmas without a particular relative knocking on the door come lunchtime was a tough time for my family. Christmas is a festival that, for me at least, is an opportunity to connect with friends and loved ones and a celebration spent in the moment. It might even be a time to reconnect with family, to put aside grudges or disputes just for one day. If men one day away from possibly dying could do it in the trenches of France during World War One, maybe we can too. We can put up the trees and decorations, finish off the last piece in the calendar and get excited about going to bed. We can treasure all the people who mean the world to us. We can wish each other a great day.

Happy Christmas Ryedale Churches would like to wish you all a happy and holy Christmas

A Christmas message from the Chair of the Methodist Yorkshire North & East District, Rev’d Leslie Newton

T

here’s something special about ‘home’: the place we hope to feel safe, secure and loved. Every Christmas people travel many miles to get home. Christmas reminds us that Jesus left his heavenly home behind. His earthly life began in a borrowed space, with his parents far from their home. Surely no-one’s ideal Christmas. And yet God knew what he was doing. Jesus made his home with us so we could discover what it is to be at home with God. God, who loves each one of us without reserve, wants us to live life with him. In a world: - that can so often hurt us, God offers safety and comfort. - where it’s all too easy to make bad choices, God offers forgiveness and new starts. - that’s so full of unfairness, God offers a way of peace. All this we know because Jesus came and made his home with us. I hope you’ll go to one of the services advertised here, and feel at home in celebrating the Christmas message: that Jesus made his home amongst us, so that we can make our home with God. Wishing you a happy and peaceful Christmas.

HELMSLEY CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS FAVOURITES FOR A SEASON OF FESTIVE FUN

H

elmsley is to host its seventh annual Christmas Tree Festival, which promises to be the most dazzling yet. Timed to coincide with the town’s Christmas light switch on, at which Swinton Brass Band will be playing, a preview evening will take place on Friday 29th November at Helmsley’s All Saints Church. The festival then officially opens on Saturday 30th November and is open daily, from 10am to 4pm, until Sunday 15th December. The festival features 25 trees which have been individually decorated by businesses and organisations around the town on a theme – which this year is Christmas Favourites. Entry is free, but money raised from donations will be split between St Leonard’s Hospice, All Saints Church and the Helmsley in Business group. Helmsley will also honour its annual celebration of Small Business Saturday on 7th December, with a Christmas event in the Market Place. With stalls, tastings, table top sales, competitions, craft demonstrations and panto-themed fancy dress, it promises to be a day of festive fun, celebrating the many independent businesses in the town. Ryedale District Council has kindly provided £1.50 all day parking at the Cleveland Way car park. Families visiting in December will also be able to take part in a special Beanstalk Window Trail around the town. Tying into Helmsley Art Centre’s pantomime this year, the trail will take visitors around Helmsley looking for what is hidden at the top of a number of beanstalks. Anyone correctly finding all the answers will win a small prize. Entry forms can be collected from any of the participating businesses, the Christmas Tree Festival, Helmsley Library or the Helmsley in Business stall on Small Business Saturday. The events have been organised by the Helmsley in

54 | Handy Mag | December 2019

Business group, which fundraises each year to buy more Christmas decorations for the town, having spent more than £10,000 on new lights over the last few years. The Christmas Tree Festival is organised in conjunction with All Saints Church. Lynn Hempsall, treasurer at Helmsley in Business and owner of Helmsley Traditional Sweet Shop, said: “We know people look forward to the Christmas Tree Festival and it creates a real buzz around town, so we are delighted to announce the details of this year’s event. Small Business Saturday is a great opportunity for us to celebrate all the wonderful independent businesses in town, which make Helmsley the magical place it is – Christmas or not! We hope visitors and locals will come and join in all the festive fun, from beanstalk spotting to dads dressed as pantomime dames. We look forward to seeing you!” The Christmas light switch on will take place at the town Christmas tree in the Market Place at 6pm on 29th November, before a procession leads the way to the Church for the Christmas Tree Festival Preview Evening at 6.30pm with music, mince pies and a glass of wine. Tickets are available at £5 each from Porters Coffee Shop and Helmsley Library. For more information go to www.visithelmsley. co.uk

Christmas is nearly here By Kathryn Craven

W

e have some great Christmas activities happening across Ryedale in December, including lots of businesses who will be putting their Christmas knits on to support our ‘Look a Twit in a Festive Knit’ campaign. Businesses involved so far include: Helmsley Arts Centre, Pickering Co-op, The Forest and Vale Hotel, Kirkbymoorside Surgery, Duncombe Park Gift Shop and Trustmarque Solutions. Thank you to all the businesses taking part and showing your support for the Hospice in this way. Thank you also to our two local venues who will be selling our lovely Christmas Cards: Pickering Pharmacy and Helmsley Arts Centre.

Christmas Tree in the Helmsley Christmas Tree Festival. This is such a great event and one I am very pleased to be able to take part in. This year the theme of our tree is Christmas jumpers!

Visit Pickering Library on the morning of Tuesday 10th December to take part in the Moo Music sessions. Enjoy music with your children and enjoy a mince pie and some Christmas crafts. You never know who you might meet - maybe the man himself!

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year

I will be in Helmsley Market Square on Saturday 8th December as part of the ‘Helmsley in Business’ small business day. Helmsley Arts Centre will also be wearing their festive jumpers for ‘Twit in a Knit’ to celebrate the launch of their panto... oh no they won’t, oh yes they will! I think that’s all from me for 2019. We have lots of exciting plans in the pipeline for 2020 already so it’s set to be a great year. Thank you to all who have supported me and St Leonard’s in 2019; I look forwards to working with you all again next year.

Kathryn

On Friday 13th December I will be joining North Yorkshire Music Therapy in Hovingham to celebrate their birthday - more details to be confirmed soon. This year we will once again be having a Hospice

LOCAL OPTICIANS LEADS THE WAY WITH REVOLUTIONARY EYE TECHNOLOGY It’s also a groundbreaking tool used to enhance retinal screening for diabetics and macular degeneration as it’s able to catch the earliest signs of change. Louise Knock explains “It gives us so much more information, enabling me to do my job even better and more accurately”.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

With this new technology, Specsavers in Malton offer the whole package when it comes to looking after the health of your eyes.

S eyes.

pecsavers in Malton has recently invested in brand new scanning technology, revolutionising the way they look after your

Josie Matthews, the Dispensing Director at Specsavers in Malton, says, “We use state-of-the-art technology, so customers can rest assured they will be getting the best help possible.”

“SO MUCH BETTER, AND SO MUCH MORE ACCURATE”

A standard retinal photograph provides optometrists with a view of the surface of your retina, but with Specsavers’ new Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) machine, they’re able to scan through all the layers, giving an even clearer, more detailed overall picture. Louise Knock explains “It’s not just a scan, it gives us a completely different view of the retina than ever before. We can see through the layers and through sections, so we can spot any early changes”.

THEY HAVE THE EXPERIENCE, TECHNIQUES AND TECHNOLOGY TO HELP YOU SEE AND HEAR CLEARER FOR LONGER THAN EVER BEFORE.

They’re also able to easily monitor existing conditions using the scans, as they provide a detailed picture of progression that can be kept on file. Josie says “Our business has grown since opening in 2002. It has been a very satisfying process, helping many people gain confidence because they can see or hear more clearly again. And as our customers keep returning to us, we will continue to offer superb service.” What’s more, their comprehensive, quality service is for all budgets. The scan can be easily added to your normal eye test for just £10. And they stock a wide range of frames and lenses – including designer frames – for all budgets. For more information or to book an appointment call 01653 692 784. Open seven days a week.

A FIELD OF VISION

Being able to see through to the lowest levels of the eye means your optometrist is able to spot signs of disease years in advance. A retinal photo only shows cells once they have died (and are at the surface), but now they can see when the cells are sick or thinner, so they can catch the disease process before it happens. For example, the OCT scan could detect glaucoma four to five years before a standard exam would, meaning you are able to start treating it much earlier. 64 | Handy Mag | December 2019

Short Story

The Penguin Parade “Chuck it all in this wheelbarrow,” Barry said. “How many did you manage to get?” “I’ve got Freddie Mercury, Elvis, Prince Philip and Batman,” Phil said, glad to unburden himself of his awkward load of cardboard.

“Prince Philip?” Barry snorted. “Who lent you that?” “It’s Theresa’s. Don’t ask me what she does with it. Did you manage to get anyone?” “I’ve got Mr Bean and two Spice Girls,” Barry said proudly. “Found them in a skip. How did Theresa take you working today?” “She’s not delighted.” Phil pushed the loaded

wheelbarrow towards the penguin enclosure. “I didn’t

tell her I’d volunteered.”

“Zoo animals still have to be fed,” Barry said, “even on Christmas day.”

“Put him between the Spice Girls,” Barry said. “Have you got the fish?” “Yep.” Phil held up the bucket. “Let’s begin.” Barry undid the padlock and opened the gate. The birds did not move.

“It’s not working,” Phil said. “They’re not buying it.” “You’d think they’d be thrilled to parade in front of all these celebrities.” Barry said. “What’s wrong with them?” “We haven’t got enough people,” Barry said. “I swear those birds have done a headcount.”

“She grumbled, but she’s gone off to my folks.” Phil shrugged. “She’ll have a nice time.”

The penguins refused to parade. Mr Bean wobbled over in the wind.

“Let’s get on with it, shall we? Don’t want to keep our stars waiting.”

“This is a disaster.” Phil forlornly shook the bucket of fish. “After all this effort.”

Every day at noon the Humboldt penguins performed their parade. They’d waddle out of their enclosure and over the little bridge for some well-deserved applause from the zoo visitors. It was the highlight of the penguins’ day. But Christmas was the one day of the year the zoo was closed. There would be no audience. Barry and Phil knew that the birds would be disappointed. Last year they sulked for a week.

“Phil, wait!” a familiar voice called breathlessly.

“Let’s set these things out along the fence,” Barry said, unfolding a life-size cardboard cutout of Elvis. “Should we group them together or spread them out?” “Let’s see how well they stand up,” Phil said. “I don’t want them blowing over, that’ll really freak the birds out.”

Phil and Barry turned around to see a group of people jogging towards them.

“It’s Theresa!” Phil clapped with joy. “She’s brought the whole family with her.” “We’ve come to support the penguins.” Theresa grinned. “How did you guess?” Phil gave her a hug. “When I saw you’d taken my Philip I put two and two together,” she said.

The penguins were already assembling by their gate and watching the men with interest.

Now that the crowd had grown to an acceptable size, the birds waddled dutifully over their little bridge. Everyone cheered. And if the penguins thought that certain members of the audience seemed a little stiff, they were too polite and professional to mention it.

“Shall we bother with Batman?” Phil said.

CAN YOU HELP MAKE A DIFFERENCE TO PEOPLE LIVING WITH DEMENTIA?

T

here are an estimated 10,000 people living with dementia in North Yorkshire. In fact, 52% of people in the UK say that they know someone affected by the condition. These are startling statistics, but keeping in touch with friends, staying active and continuing to do the things you enjoy, is one important way that people living with dementia can look after their wellbeing. This is why the two groups that Dementia Forward run in the Pickering area are such a lifeline to local people with dementia. The focus is on having fun and socialising in a supportive environment.

74 | Handy Mag | December 2019

Monday Melodies takes place at Pickering Memorial Hall on Monday mornings, while Welcome Wednesday is a lunch group at Middleton & Aislaby village hall. The groups are run by members of staff and local volunteers, and the charity are currently looking for new volunteers to join the team. As Volunteer Co-ordinator Debby Lennox explains, “You might not think you have the skills to support our services, but everyone has something to offer; whether you can sing, bake, play an instrument, make a great cup of tea or love to chat. If you can spare a little bit of time, whether it is once a week or once a month, it really does make a difference.” Long-term volunteer Heather sums up what volunteering means to her: “I honestly get as much out of it as I put in. Often when I am in the kitchen preparing the refreshments, I hear the sound of laughter coming from the hall, and I think that’s what it is all about. It is truly rewarding.” If you are interested in volunteering, or if you know someone who could benefit from the services of Dementia Forward, please get in touch on 03300 578592 or email info@dementiaforward.org.uk.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP FOUND – THE PERFECT CHRISTMAS PRESENT

Every year the same thought comes up: wouldn’t it be wonderful to find the perfect present that would be suitable for people of all ages, be beautiful, useful and environmentally friendly. Usually I take the easy way out and give the children and grandchildren money to buy what they really really want. This is, of course, passing the buck, and many times I’m quite sure it will be spent on ‘stuff,’ and what the world doesn’t need is more stuff. When the latest report about the Climate Emergency was published by the IPCC they identified the three most helpful things people could do to slow things down: 1. Eat less meat (already doing that) 2. Stop flying (already doing that) 3. Plant trees (Hmmm… the garden is full up) So I added up roughly how much I spend on presents, birthday and Christmas. I added on what the usual 100 Christmas cards cost. Then another bit for birthday cards. Then I added a bit more just for love. This came to a tidy amount. Divided by twelve – that means that each month of the year I can give a healthy donation to the Woodland Trust, who plant in the UK, and the same amount to TreeSisters, who support tree-planting projects in the tropics. (That’s a particularly good one as trees grow much faster in the tropics.) Then I told the family: ‘This is a way to help towards cleaner air and tolerable temperatures for you in the future.’ They love the idea. Sorted!

Jasper’s Diary Dear Diary, Christmas is coming up which means extra treats, presents and getting to wear my special Christmas bandana! However, there are lots of other things around at Christmas that I would love to have if I was allowed. My twelve bad things of Christmas include: Mince Pies – they look so scrummy and the smell of them cooking makes my mouth water, but they contain raisins which can be bad for my kidneys. Poinsettia flowers – I have to investigate everything by eating it, but eating this plant is a no go, as they could make me feel quite sick.

chewing a toy and the harmful chemicals could cause burns to my insides! Turkey bones – I’d love to get my chops around that big juicy carcass. Nothing would go to waste if it was mine. The humans make sure to put it straight into the outside bin though as they say the sharp bones could cause damage to my insides or get stuck. Ouch! Alcohol – when I see the humans having food and drink, I really want to share it but if they give me some of their alcohol, I could feel wobbly and sick, a bit like them! That’s why I have my own special doggy beer or Pawsecco! Sweets – my own treats are boring. I want some of the human’s treats in their shiny wrappers but sometimes they contain artificial sweeteners like xylitol which could cause my blood sugar level to become dangerously low or result in liver failure! After all that, I think I’ll be a good boy and just stick to the doggy treats that I’m allowed, I don’t want to have to go to the vets on Christmas Day after all!

by Dr Sarah Hunter (BVet Med MRCVS) Station House Vets

Chocolate – this is always difficult for me to resist and I would eat a whole box if I was allowed (or if someone left them within my reach) but there’s a worry about vomiting and seizures. Stuffing – it’s tempting for the humans to give me bits of their Christmas dinner, but the stuffing often has onions mixed in which can cause an upset tummy or even anaemia, I think I’ll give that a miss. Tinsel – it looks so fun to play with; I’d love to start ripping it up and chewing on it, but I suppose it could tie my insides in knots! Nuts – whenever I hear a packet rustling, I go straight over to investigate and remind the humans that I’m there. I love peanut butter so much but if I have any other nuts it could make me poorly, Macadamia nuts are a big no no. Christmas decorations – the shiny colours are so attractive but sometimes these are made of glass which could cut my mouth if I start chewing on them! Toys – I love fluffy toys. After I’ve carried them around for a bit they are great for tearing apart, usually I get colourful poo the next day but I guess these pieces could get stuck in my intestines. Batteries – they could get eaten accidentally when ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
