W

elcome to our October edition.

Did you know that 1st – 5th October is National Work Life Week? It’s a week supported by the Working Families Charity when we can focus on how employees and employers can improve work-life balance. As someone who regularly works at weekends (as I’m currently doing writing this editors letter!) I’ve juggled work and home life for years – probably not always very well. I remember when I first started the Handy Mags, I worked around my young children and frequently felt guilty – even getting them to help me with work so I could spend more time with them. At age 6 and 8 they became experts at stuffing leaflets into magazines! Now they’re older, I still find it difficult to actually spend time away from work and, after long school holidays, it’s a constant topic in our office discussions – fitting work around family life is a huge challenge. We all know that working long hours is bad for us – never mind the slouching at a computer for endless hours and not getting any exercise, what about snacking on unhealthy food between meals? According to research, half of parents feel their worklife balance causes stress and one in ten is ready to resign. Seven out of ten parents work at home in the evenings or weekends due to increasing workloads, the organisational culture and/or their manager’s attitude. Basically, it’s not a balance at all! There has been so much about mental health issues in the news recently and anything we can do to reduce stress has got to be a good thing. So this autumn I’m going to try turning off my phone and emails in the evenings, go home on time and spend time outdoors enjoying the changing autumn colours, or, when the weather turns, simply spend evenings at home wrapped up in a warm jumper and slippers doing something ‘creative’!

Honouring local heros

The 9th Annual Pride of Malton & Norton Awards

T

he Pride of Malton and Norton Awards were started 9 years ago to honour those people in our community young and old who have gone an extra mile to help others and make our community a better place to live and work. This year, once again, the Talbot Hotel have kindly offered to be hosts for the event which will take place in the beautiful York House Marquee. Organised by Malton & Norton Community Events group, nominations forms have been circulated throughout the towns and online and, according to the organisers, there have been some fantastic entries. The judging panel will meet and have the difficult task of choosing the top 3 finalists from each category and these will be invited to come along to the glitzy award ceremony on Saturday 6th October where the winners will be announced. Finalists and their guests will be treated to a welcome drinks reception at York House, before taking their seats in the beautiful marquee for a delicious two course evening meal before the awards ceremony itself. As well as nominees and their sponsors, local dignitaries and our MP will also be attending. Local business personality and Malton Panto favourite, Rory Queen, will be the evenings compare once again. Tickets will be sold on the evening for a charity raffle with the proceeds split between two local charities, Sight Support Ryedale and Candle lighters. The organisers say that any businesses who would like to donate a raffle/auction prize would be much appreciated. This years’ auction prizes include a hot air balloon ride, a signed Manchester United Football, a Robert Fuller painting and a tour of Westminster Abbey.

This year’s Charity of the Year Award is sponsored by Malton & Norton Community events and the winner will not only receive a trophy but also a £1000 donation! The Handy Mag’s very own Mandy West, one of the organisers, says “We would like to say a big thank you to the sponsors, local businesses who support the event each year which without them we wouldn’t be able to go ahead.” If you’d like more information about the event please call Mandy West on 07968 227674 or email: mandy.west20@icloud.com

NOMADS Productions present an hilarious comedy After the success of their recent run of mysteries and thrillers Nomads are putting on a riotous comic play for their Autumn production. It is the hilarious comedy by Rick Abbot “Play On”. The play follows the disastrous attempts by a theatre company to put on a play by a new author. We watch the actors as they stumble their way through rehearsals and eventually see their accident- filled first night. Director Roger Kay says “Rehearsals have been going extremely well and have been great fun. It has been hard for the actors themselves not to laugh regularly at the humorous situations the script places them in. I’m sure that audiences will find the play equally humorous and will enjoy a fun- filled evening of entertainment”. The format of the play is an unusual one and is guaranteed to give the audience a few surprises along the way. The classic comedy “Noise Off” is written in a similar vein and this production likewise lays bare the frustrations, confusions and mishaps of a play that deteriorates into farcical chaos.

the audience with a massive smile to brighten the darker November evenings. The play is on at Norton College on the 31st October, 1st and 2nd November at 7.30 pm. There is a bar and light refreshments. Tickets £7.50 from The Booking Office,Malton Library 01609 534565.

Nomads are sure the evening’s entertainment will leave

Kirkbymoorside Environment Group Manor Vale Ancient Woodland and Wildflower Meadow

Manor Vale on the north side of Kirkbymoorside above Castlegate and towards the golf course is a beautiful nature reserve of deciduous woodland and small wildflower meadow known as Finch’s Fork. It is home to a diversity of plant and animal life, including the Manor Ash said to be over 400 years old. It is accessible for all to enjoy. During the course of the year, there are 3 - 4 work sessions organised by the Kirkbymoorside Environment Group in conjunction with the Town Council and Ryedale Council Environment Office. This gives people the opportunity to spend time in nature, getting active, learning new skills and meeting new friends. Typically, the meadow is mown in late summer to promote the habitat for wildflowers. Towards winter the hedges can be laid and trees coppiced. Some wood cut during work can be taken home for fuel. The volunteer groups are open to all, children to be accompanied by a responsible adult, the more the merrier! Just bring some gloves, outdoor clothing, sturdy boots and a packed lunch if needed. You will be provided with tuition and guidance for all tasks. Start time is usually 10am until 1pm, stay for as long or as short as you wish. We meet at the parking area on Manor Vale Lane above the Scout hut. Please feel warmly invited to come and appreciate and care for this wonderful gem on our doorstep. Thank you and looking forward to meeting you at the next coppicing event on Saturday 10th November at 10am. To get in touch or for more information contact: keithdowell@gmail.com

A 10th Anniversary Celebration For Harmonia Choir

Harmonia Choir will be celebrating their 10th anniversary alongside York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir (York Phil) at St Peter’s Church in Norton on Saturday 13th October. Harmonia was set up by local singing teacher Alison Davis who saw a need for a ladies choir in the area. Over the years the choir has grown in size and ability and now has 60 members who practice at Norton College every Thursday evening. The choir sings in 3-6 parts performing a wide range of material from folk to gospel, choral to jazz, world music and everything in between. 2018 has been a very successful year for Harmonia with another win in the recital class at the Eskdale Festival Choir Day. Next year they are looking forward to entering the Manchester Amateur Choral Competition in March 2019 to compete against choirs from around the UK. Harmonia has always been keen to be a part of the local community and has performed all over Ryedale, Scarborough, York and Bridlington, raising money for local causes. The choir have performed with York Phil a number of times previously in both Malton and York, as well as supporting them at the Eskdale Festival, and are looking forward to another wonderful and varied programme of music at the October concert.

York Phil have had an equally good year which began with the Community Choir Festival in York in March which attracted 23 choirs. A York Phil member said, “This was followed by winning the Male Voice Class at the Eskdale Festival in April, although we could not get the better of our

talented October hosts, in other classes!” In June York Phil worked with top tenor Graham Edwards in a Pocklington concert which raised more than £3000 for two charities Parkinson’s UK and PSPA. They surprised their long serving director Berry Lewis in July by conferring honorary life membership for her 20 years of dedication to the choir. And in the midst of all this they held three recording sessions and laid down 11 tracks as the basis of their next CD. September brought another day out and concert in Swaledale, and an unusual but very entertaining evening when we hosted the Australian Welsh Male Voice Choir during their comprehensive tour of the UK. York Phil said, “In October we are pleased to be sharing a concert platform again with our friends in Harmonia, without doubt one of the finest choirs in Yorkshire, and we are looking forward to another enjoyable evening.” Tickets for the concert on 13th October are available from Massers, Castlegate, Malton or on 01653 692468.

Short Story The Nervous Goldfish

“Are you Joan?” A breathless young man in a cagoule approached with a small dog in tow. “Yes.” Joan, about to walk into the dentists, was caught off guard. “I’ve found your dog.” He thrust the lead into her hand, before sprinting off down the path. “Thank you,” she called automatically, even though she didn’t own a dog. Joan looked at the dog, who looked up at Joan. She guessed it was some sort of chihuahua. It was not a pretty dog. Its teeth couldn’t make up their mind which direction to point in, and its fur stuck out as though it had built up a considerable amount of static electricity. Joan could sympathise, she had exactly the same trouble with her own hair. “You’re an ugly little thing aren’t you?” she said, but not unkindly. The dog gave a bored whine as though it was sick to death of hearing about it. “Let’s have a look to see who you really belong to.” Joan crouched to examine the copper disc attached to the dog’s collar. The dog dutifully waited. The name tag had just one word engraved on it – ‘Joan’. “It seems we’ve got something in common,” Joan said, stroking Joan behind the ears. What sort of person, she wondered, called their dog Joan? She was running late for her check-up. Should she take the dog in with her? They’d started charging people for late arrivals; she’d thought this was a good idea but never thought she would be one of the offenders. What was the dentist’s policy on dogs she wondered? She knew he was an animal lover. The last time she visited for a particularly harrowing scale and polish, he’d told her he had lots of pets and he liked to name them after his patients. Joan studied canine Joan who yawned idly, all her wonky teeth on display. Was this the dentist’s dog? It’s true she’d always regretted not getting dental braces as a girl, but surely it was unkind to name this scruffy dog after her? “Come on Joan,” she said firmly, “I’m taking you back to where you belong.” The dog trotted cheerfully after her, showing neither

familiarity nor fear as they marched through the door into the dentist’s reception area. “You’re cutting it fine,” Melissa, the receptionist, said sternly, “I was about to mark you as late.” “That would be a bit rich, considering.” Joan summoned all her righteous indignation. “And I don’t appreciate people making fun of my teeth.” Melissa looked genuinely confused. “I wasn’t aware I was,” she answered. Joan was on the warpath. “Why, then, has the dentist named a pet after me?” Melissa blushed. “If it’s any consolation,” she said soothingly, “we’re all very fond of Joan the goldfish.” “Goldfish?” Joan stuttered. “In the waiting room aquarium,” Melissa said sweetly. “He called her after you, because, like you, she’s a bit nervous.” “Everyone’s nervous at the dentist’s!” Joan said indignantly. “Then who does this Joan belong to?” Melissa leaned across the counter and frowned at Joan the dog, who was chewing her lead. “I’m going to hazard a guess,” Melissa said, “I bet she belongs to the gentleman over there.” She nodded towards a well-dressed man with his back to them leafing through a copy of ‘Hello’ magazine. “I said he couldn’t bring his dog in, so he tied her up outside.” Joan went pale. “Do you know him?” Melissa asked. “He’s my hairdresser.” Joan ran a hand through her nest of hair. “How flattering,” Melissa flicked her silken hair and smiled, “to have so many pets named after you.” By Jackie Brewster

Kitchens & Bedrooms Local service, choice & value

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. Instyle’s directors Gary and Paul say that more than 80 per cent of customers come through referrals from their customers’ family, friends and neighbours. James and Heather, from Wiggington, wrote: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.”

After 28 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a close-knit team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in the area. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from a new creative design to the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.

Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price. And if money is tight, an Instyle kitchen or bedroom facelift can freshen up a tired looking room for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen often for half the price of new. “We don’t use any pressure sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

Its Annual Family Christmas Concert is in Malton Methodist Church in Saville Street – our old practice venue – on 2nd December. Looking back, the choir was performing in a special charity concert in Stamford Bridge for the much-admired York’s St Leonard’s Hospice as this report went to press in September.

The choir, which has just marked its 11th birthday, performs at a third private party in Malton’s Talbot Hotel on 12th October for former Norton Mayor and Town Clerk Cyril Shreeve and his wife. The event marks the 100th Anniversary of the creation of the RAF, of which the couple are staunch supporters. The Malton men first sang for Cyril last year and again in April. A fourth concert is now booked for 20th November for Cyril’s 96th birthday and to mark the centenary of the end of WW1.

It also made it through two earlier, unusual openair concerts. At one, a Spitfire fly-past provided the backdrop for a commemorative performance in Sleights for RAF Fylingdales. In another ‘first’ the choir sang on the back of a trailer at the prestigious Alne Street Fayre near Easingwold - one of The Times listed “Top 20 Family Days Out”. Fayre organiser Suzi Scott-Rix said: “The performance was great”. The choir understands that a second invitation is planned!

L

ocal clothing and vehicle graphics firm Big Boolies has seen huge growth over the past few years and the company has now launched Booler 4x4 and a clothing brand, Boar by Boolies. Big Boolies is a family run business based on Showfield Lane Industrial Estate in Malton offering everything required for business branding including logo design, vehicle graphics, clothing (embroidery, screen printing or direct to garment), branded goods such as pens, mugs, signage, banners, stationery and more. Owners Gemma and Nick are passionate about helping local businesses ensure they get their brand seen locally. After meeting at college, Gemma (who studied art and design) and Nick spent many years travelling to car, bike and 4x4 shows alongside their jobs and decided to combine their passion for cars with design and set up Big Boolies in 2008. Nick and Gemma What about the business name? Gemma explained, “As silly as it sounds it came to Nick and I as we lay in bed one morning. We always call alloy wheels or big tyres on 4x4’s “Big Boolies.” So we had a name - a crazy name - but one that he and I knew would stick in peoples minds and also be a bit tongue-in-cheek with me being, shall we say, the right shape!” Since then Big Boolies has grown into a real onestop marketing solution for a diverse set of clients. The team includes Gemma, Nick, Caitlin, Andy, Ethan (Gemma and Nick’s son) and Julia. Gemma says, “If you can put a logo or design on it, then we are the place to help!”

We believe that church starts on Monday morning, wherever you are, and continues throughout the week. It doesn’t only happen on Sundays, so our mid-week activities include “Stretch and Flex” (keep fit class), Home Group (a time to build personal relationships and share together), Ryedale Men (a monthly dinner for men at the Wentworth Arms, Old Malton), Connections Craft Club (designed for women), and Men’s Curry night (great for curry lovers). More info can be found on our website (www. welcome-church.co.uk) and FaceBook page. We believe these activities demonstrate that being a Christian is about friendship and relationships as well as faith and belief. Our Sunday worship is very informal, relaxed, and fun. As we are quite small in number, dialogue and personal participation is encouraged. A children’s section known as “Roots” runs in parallel. Interested? You will be made most welcome, so why not ring Ruth on 01751 474291 for a friendly chat, or simply come along?

Winter Warmers For Your Feet As the weather turns colder and the nights draw in, it’s time to wrap up against the elements and this applies to your feet too. With boot-wearing season now upon us, pamper your feet both outdoors and indoors so they are healthy for autumn and winter. Stuart Moore Foot Health Practitioner has some advice for autumn and winter foot care: “When out and about in the cold wind and rain, wear your boots or Wellingtons to keep your feet warm and dry. And you can get fashionable yet practical footwear, so you don’t need to compromise on style and looked-after feet. “Once at home, have a pair of warm slippers at the ready to slip your feet into to help keep your feet in good ‘working order. There’s nothing more miserable than having cold feet.

Stuart has covered the Scarborough and Ryedale district since 2010 and knows the value of looking after your feet at any time of year, but particularly in autumn and winter. To contact Stuart, call Stuart Moore Foot Health on 01723 374 668 or 07855 190082.

“To boost foot health, I offer quality foot care that is suitable for the cold weather season.”

All About Apples

A

is for apple, seemingly the most ordinary fruit in the world and so embedded in our lives we use it to help us learn the alphabet as children. Time and again it tops the polls as the favourite fruit of the nation but how much do we really know about the humble apple? It came originally from Kazakhstan in Asia, introduced into Britain by the Romans who understood how to cross different apple varieties and how to graft them on to different root stocks. The Victorians prized the thinner skinned varieties over tougher waxier ones and would be stunned to see the popularity of varieties such as Braeburn and Jazz today. Perhaps the most surprising thing about the apple is how many different varieties can grow in Britain. We see maybe half a dozen varieties in the supermarket, but in Yorkshire alone you could be growing Lane’s Prince Albert (gorgeous late cooker) Nancy Jackson (another late cooker which keeps well in storage), Adam’s Pearmain (late dessert) or Bloody Ploughman ( a mid-season dessert apple with its own murderous legend). All these apples grow at Helmsley Walled Garden where we have over one hundred trees and nearly as many varieties. They clothe the walls in espaliers, grow freely in the orchard and make cordons and steps overs around the community plots. These last mentioned form the Hilary Wilson collection of apples that grow well in Yorkshire. Hilary is a well-known pomologist with an almost unparalled knowledge of northern apples. Over the years she tracked down these unusual varieties and generously donated this collection to the Garden. One of the things I find most fascinating is how different apples can look and taste. I grew up when the main apple choices in the supermarket were Golden Delicious and Granny Smith. Imagine my surprise later in life to discover that apples can differ in colour from pale lemon through green and rose to deepest burgundy and can taste crisp, dry or light and sweet. Imagine also my surprise to discover that

picked fresh, Golden Delicious has a delicate flavour rather than none at all after it has been in cold storage for months. When we make apple juice here at the Garden it ranges from palest pink to deepest amber and the flesh comes in different textures also. So embedded in our history is the apple that many myths surround it including the power of bestowing eternal youth, or so the Celts believed. I can’t vouch for that but I can say that there is a wealth of gorgeous British apples to be discovered and you can find out more if you come to Helmsley Walled Garden on Saturday 20th October for our Apple Day event. There will be juicing demonstrations and the chance to taste both apples and juice along with apple trails and activities for children. So come and enjoy this most British fruit with us.

October Community Weekend Scampston looks forward to welcoming back Ryedale's residents on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th October

As well as enjoying the delights of the Walled Garden, Ryedale residents can visit the recentlyrestored Palladian Bridge, which reopened in July after an extensively detailed project. The friendly bunch at Scampston’s Walled Garden Café will also be serving up freshly-baked treats, delicious lunches and a variety of hot and cold drinks. To gain entry to the Walled Garden and Parkland at Scampston on 13th and 14th October, residents are asked to bring proof of a Ryedale postcode. With the gardens closing for 2018 on Sunday 28th October, Scampston’s Community Weekend offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy a free, fun-filled day out while the gates remain open!

On 13th and 14th October, Scampston opens its gates for its Community Weekend, offering free entry to all local Ryedale residents. After the great success of April’s Community Weekend, Scampston will again invite local visitors into the Walled Garden and Parkland on 13th and 14th October, free of charge.

Opening times on Community Weekend: 10am – 5pm. For more information about what’s coming up at Scampston, visit www.scampston.co.uk, email info@scampston.co.uk or call 01944 759 111.

Scampston’s October Community Weekend offers visitors the chance to see the transition that the garden has been through across the open season. There is a strong contrast between the early bloom seen over April’s Community Weekend, compared to the autumnal hues offered by the Walled Garden in October. Dutch plantsman Piet Oudolf designed the garden with the aim of creating an evolution in character throughout the year, with each season bringing new life and changes of colour. The grasses, for example, look particularly spectacular in October, when they have developed a golden shade. Scampston Walled Garden is known for its later development than other more traditional gardens, so even in autumn there is plenty to be seen.

Did You Know?

Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month organised by Breast Cancer Care who are the only specialist UK-wide charity providing support for anyone affected by breast cancer. These are three main risk factors of breast cancer: 1. Being a woman - over 99% of new cases of breast cancer are in women. 2. Getting older - more than 80% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. 3. Significant family history – this isn’t common, around 5% of people diagnosed with breast cancer have inherited a faulty BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene.

Breast cancer diagnosis

• Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, one person is diagnosed every 10 minutes. • 1 in 8 women in the UK will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. • This Breast Cancer Awareness Month around 5,000 people will be diagnosed.

Breast cancer and survivorship

• Breast cancer survival is improving and has doubled in the last forty years in the UK. • Almost nine in 10 women survive breast cancer for five years or more. • Every year around 11,400 people die from breast cancer in the UK. • An estimated 691,000 are alive in the UK after a diagnosis of breast cancer. This is predicted to rise to 840,000 in 2020. • A Breast Cancer Care survey found 1 in 4 women (26%) find the end of treatment the hardest part of breast cancer and only one in 10 (10%) say they felt positive and ready to move on when they were discharged from hospital treatment. More than half (53%) struggled with anxiety at the end of treatment and nearly a third (31%) with depression.

Breast cancer and younger women

• Around 5,600 women aged 45 and under are diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK and just over half (53%) have no discussion with healthcare professionals about fertility preservation options.

Breast cancer and men

• Breast cancer in men is very rare with

just 390 new cases in the UK each year, compared to nearly 55,000 new cases in women. • A Breast Cancer Care survey found nearly threequarters (73%) of men don’t check their breasts for signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

Secondary breast cancer

• Secondary breast cancer is when breast cancer cells spread to other parts of the body, most commonly the bones, brain, lungs or liver. • Two thirds (66%) of Hospital Trusts in England do not know how many of their patients have incurable secondary breast cancer, according to Breast Cancer Care findings. It’s estimated there are around 36,000 people in the UK living with the disease, but with such incomplete data collection, we can’t be sure.

Breast cancer signs and symptoms

• Knowing the signs and symptoms of breast cancer can lead to diagnosing the cancer sooner. This can be crucial in providing more effective treatment and, ultimately, saving lives. But a Breast Cancer Care survey found a third (33%) of women aren’t regularly checking. A fifth (20%) say it’s because they don’t know how to check their breasts. • Breast cancer doesn’t always mean a lump. Other less well known symptoms include a nipple becoming inverted or a change in texture of the skin. For care, support and information, call Breast Cancer Care’s free Helpline on 0808 800 6000

An update from Sheriff Hutton Jumblies

Autumn Signs By The Pastoral Poet Early frost may chill the roses, More tempered are the shrinking days. The creaking door of summer closes, Less potent now, the sun’s rays. The robin sings his liquid trill, And swallows head across the foam. They too have felt the Autumn chill, And made wing to their winter home.

The Jumblies are having another great fundraising year and up to September this year they have raised £12,763 for various charities. Recently, Penny Bean, Linda Scaife, Pat Cooper and Joan Armitage were honoured to be invited to a Royal Garden Party at Buckingham Palace to represent the Jumblies, in recognition of the fantastic work they do. The Jumblies have been raising money for worthy causes for over 32 years. They hold nine jumble sales across the year, working alongside many support groups each year to raise money for village organisations and local and national charities. The Jumble Sales are held in the Village Hall at Sheriff Hutton between 2pm and 4pm. The next sale is on Saturday 20th October.

Trees are hanging out their bunting, Multi-coloured flags aflutter. Squirrels in the hedgerows hunting, Muddy water in the gutter.

Enwrapped in mist the woodland way, Shrouded in day’s dying hours. Dewy cobwebs are ghostly grey, And tousled are the heads of flowers. The prowling owl on muffled wings, Skirts the wood in silent flight. The pheasant’s raucous challenge rings, As slow dusk deepens into night. Clive Milson

FRIENDS OF MALTON MUSEUM LECTURE

Wednesday 17 October Joyce Hill, Emeritus Professor, University of Leeds ‘Albania; a secret land revealed’ For most of the time since the Second World War, Albania has been a land apart: a secret land difficult to enter and almost impossible for its inhabitants to leave under the long dictatorship of Enver Hoxha. But it is now gradually opening up,

showing its historical character at the cross-roads of east/west culture under the Ottomans, and the glories of its Classical and Byzantine past, when it was at the heart of Empire, the land through which ran the great highway – the Via Egnatia – linking Rome and Constantinople. The illustrated lecture will explore these many facets of this once-secret land: its striking scenery, the evidence of Enver Hoxha’s paranoia, and the richly varied cultural and archaeological inheritance. 7.30pm at The Library, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton. Admission: Friends FOC, Visitors, are very welcome, £3. If you have not yet become a Friend of Malton Museum, a call to 01653 628982 advising you would like to attend would be much appreciated.

Ryedale & District Mencap Enriching Lives Ryedale Mencap are devoted to providing friendship and support for adults and children with learning difficulties. Having been established for almost 30 years they have become synonymous with organising day trips and engaging activities among many other things in the local area to help improve the well-being of those in need. People with learning disabilities find everyday tasks very hard to handle. Things like cooking, cleaning and handling money can be very stressful and require full time supervision. Learning disabilities can often go hand in hand with other physical disabilities, making every day even harder to complete. Ryedale Mencap are always looking for volunteers. Becoming a volunteer is an incredibly rewarding experience – it’s a way to get out and make new friends, a remedy for loneliness and can even be a great way to gain new skills for those wishing to get back into work.

Volunteers are also needed to help on regular trips and outings, and to help raise awareness at various shows and fairs. You might be more into the organisational side of things and have the relevant skills needed to be a Trustee or Committee Member. Motoring

The most rugged cars you can buy We’ve rounded up nine of the most hardwearing and brawny cars you can buy today, ideal for surviving a nuclear war – or the muddy car boot sale in Sandford, Gloucestershire.

Jeep Wrangler

The latest Jeep Wrangler is more refined, luxurious and car-like than ever, but still retains the DNA of the original Willys Jeep – one of the most iconic off-roaders of all time. Solid axles ensure simplicity, allowing Wranglers to be modified for almost any purpose. For traversing sand dunes or mud-plugging in a deep forest, the Wrangler is about as tough as they come.

Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Originally known as the G-Wagen, this militaryspec beast has morphed into the ideal transport for those who want to be seen. With glitzy chrome atop the blocky body, and optional AMGtuned engines, it’s often seen in London’s most glamorous districts.

Toyota Prius

The Toyota Prius is typically used as a taxi in London rather than for blasting through sand dunes. But that’s where the ruggedness lies. Nobody expected the Prius to be as reliable as it is – but even daily abuse as Uber cabs can’t break them. Many of these cars have done over 500,000 miles and still have their original battery packs.

Ariel Nomad

Most off-roaders are designed to traverse rough terrain at about 5mph. The Ariel Nomad is designed to do it at 50. With an engine and body from the Atom road car, the rear-wheel-drive Nomad bounces across the terrain rather than ploughing through it. It’s hardcore, open to the elements and great fun.

However, it’s also one of the most serious off-roaders you can buy, thanks to a supersophisticated 4WD system plus three locking differentials. When fitted with chunky tyres, the G-Class is near unstoppable.

Subaru Forester

Toyota Land Cruiser

The brand’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system is legendary for its simplicity and reliability, while boxer engines lower the centre of gravity and make for a reassuring drive.

The legendary Land Cruiser is the vehicle that pushed Land Rover out of Australia and showed the world that the Japanese could build off-roaders that never broke down. Though the Land Cruiser isn’t as luxurious as a Range Rover, treat it properly and it’ll probably outlast you. There’s no compromise to be made off-road either.

Isuzu D-Max AT35 Arctic Trucks

Isuzu’s D-Max pickup is already a pretty rugged vehicle, with a beefy diesel engine and four-wheel drive. The specialists at Arctic Trucks, however, have given it enormous tyres and widened arches, giving the car a more purposeful stance, while custom Fox suspension lets it deal with terrain that would trouble a mountain goat.

Subaru has a reputation for producing reliable, rugged cars, and the Forester is no exception. Loved by farmers, Subaru owners tend to keep their cars for longer than any other.

Toyota Hilux

Our third Toyota is perhaps the most legendary – the Hilux, notably the ‘unkillable car’. On BBC’s Top Gear, a 1994 Hilux survived being left at sea, falling off a building, being crashed into a tree and crushed with a wrecking ball – and still started up afterwards. Today’s rather plusher Hilux still retains a wellearned reputation for serious reliability. By James Baggott

Gardening Beautiful Bulbs - by Pippa Greenwood

W

hy not make your house all the more special this winter with some colourful bowls of bulbs, perhaps with some gorgeous perfume too? You can buy ready-planted bowls of bulbs later in the year, but act now for a stunning display at a fraction of the price. The best bulbs are those described as ‘prepared’, which means they will flower well, reliably and uniformly indoors. Although often pricier they are still great value, as results with standard bulbs may be unpredictable. I like to use prepared hyacinths, but I have bowls of non-prepared bulbs too. Visit your local garden centre now and you should see a good array of bulbs for sale, plus all the other things you need. Special bulb bowls are a good buy, and are available in many colours. They’re like huge soup bowls, but in plastic or china, and have no drainage holes. You can use normal flower pots, but put a fully waterproof container or saucer

beneath each pot to protect your furniture. Bulb fibre or special compost formulated for indoor bulb planting performs better in containers without drainage, but is more expensive, and you can use standard multi-purpose compost if you wish. Hyacinths for forcing are available in many shades, but use a single colour in any one container as there is often some variation in flowering times

between the colours, and ideally you want all the flowers out simultaneously. Specially prepared crocus, paperwhite narcissus and some other daffodil types are also available. You can create a low-cost bowl with a large bag of inexpensive dwarf narcissus, such as ‘Tete-a-Tete’. Crocuses also work well. Fill your bowl about one third full of compost for larger bulbs to one half full for smaller bulbs. Firm the compost gently and position the bulbs pointed end uppermost. They can be quite closely packed, but not so they touch each other or the sides of the bowl. Nestle the bulbs gently into the compost and then top up with compost so that just the noses are poking out. Water the compost lightly until moist but not waterlogged. Cover the bowls loosely with a black bin liner and put them in a cool, dark place so that the bulbs can form good root systems. Check the bowls every week or so and apply a little more water if necessary. Bring the bowls out into the daylight once the shoots are about 2-3cm tall, which usually takes 3-5 weeks. Put them in a cool spot with plenty of natural daylight, where the shoots will continue to grow and develop a healthy green colour; they will now need a little more water. Put your bulb bowl in a warmer room once the flower buds start to colour up. For a really smart look, cover the compost with some moss or tie a seasonal ribbon around the bowl. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening items: stylish cloches, tunnels, the fantastic SpeedHoe, plant supports, raised bed kits, Easy-Tunnels, gardening tools, Grower Frames, signed books and more! Norton Hive Library & Community Hub It is just over a year since Norton Library, now known as ‘Norton Hive - Library and Community Hubwas officially opened by Cllr. Elizabeth Shields. The opening was celebrated with town councillors, volunteers and very many local residents; it was a memorable occasion. By that time, all the essential internal alterations and decoration had been completed, and the mobile garage had been converted into two useful offices, both of which have now been let. The spacious area outside the building is now the current objective. The surface of the car park has been renewed and parking places defined by white lines. Sincere thanks are due to Mike Gwilliam for all his planning and hard work in order to create a garden from the surrounding gravel and concrete. With the help of many enthusiasts, there is a path around the whole area, raised beds with scented plants- one provided by Sight Support Ryedaleand a wild flower section and plenty of seating to enjoy it all. Do come and see!

Opening Hours:

Tuesday: 9am – 12noon and 3pm-7pm Thursday: 9am -12noon and 3pm-6pm. Friday: 9am-12noon and 3pm- 6pm Saturday: 10am – 1pm.

Lungworm by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic What is Lungworm

The lungworm (Angiostrongylus vasorum) is a parasite that can cause serious health problems in dogs and can even be fatal if not diagnosed and treated promptly. Lungworm has spread considerably in recent years and is now endemic in much of the UK.

How do dogs get Lungworm

Lungworm larvae are carried by slugs and snails and can be picked up by dogs whilst rummaging through undergrowth, drinking from puddles, eating grass, or playing with toys that have tiny slugs or snails stuck to them. It’s even been shown that the larvae are released into the mollusc’s slime, so anywhere a slug or snail have been in contact with, which could be on a dogs toy, water bowl etc…. there is a risk that lungworm can be contracted. When a dog eats a slug or snail the lungworm larvae are released into the dog’s intestines. The larvae then burrow through the gut wall and make their way towards the heart, where they develop into adult worms and reproduce. The Lungworm eggs are carried in the bloodstream to the lungs, where they hatch into new larvae that burrow through the lung tissue. These larvae are coughed up by the dog, swallowed and then pass out in the dog’s poo, ready to infect more slugs and snails continuing the cycle. Foxes can also become infected with lungworm, and play a part in spreading the parasite around the country. With more people travelling in the UK with their pets, and roaming foxes, there is a very real risk that this parasite will continue to spread around the country. Frogs can also carry the larvae, posing an additional risk to dogs.

What are the symptoms of Lungworm

Symptoms of lungworm can be easily confused with other illnesses, so it is important to consult your vet immediately if your pet displays any of the following: • A change in behaviour – depression, lethargy or seizures • Breathing problems – coughing or tiring easily • General sickness – weight loss, poor appetite, vomiting or diarrhoea

• Poor blood clotting – for example excessive bleeding from minor wounds, nose bleeds, bleeding into the eyes or paleness around the eyes and gums indicating possible anaemia A dog can show just one of these symptoms, or a combination of them. . Lungworm can be fatal if left untreated, so it’s important to get your dog checked over by a vet if you have any concerns.

How is it treated and prevented

If spotted and treated early enough most dogs will make a full recovery, but as this parasite can be fatal, the best way to ensure your pet is protected is by regularly using a product that acts as a preventative. However, not all wormers are effective against lungworm so be sure to ask your vet for advice. Remember, for lungworm prevention must be monthly; using a product every 3 months will not prevent this potentially fatal parasite, as this leaves the dog unprotected for too long between doses. .

Christmas is coming... Dare we say it, but.... Christmas will be here before we know it and whilst we ready ourselves for a busy winter rescuing, caring for and re-homing unwanted and abandoned dogs, RDR are looking for creative people who can make gifts for us to sell on our fundraising stalls - and even better people who are willing to sell them for us too! Can you bake, sew, paint or have crafty skills? We’d love to hear from you...We are also looking for tombola prizes, so donations of new, good quality items that we can use as prizes are always welcome. Thank you! DOG OF THE MONTH: LOUIS Louis came to RDR from a local stray pound and is a very shy, quiet young boy of approximately 18 months old. He is fine around other dogs and his confidence is growing around people. He’s been fully vaccinated and neutered and

has started to gain weight and enjoy life again. Could you offer him a forever home and help him overcome his shyness? If you’d like to find out more about how to adopt a dog please give us a call on 07581 324153 or email us at enquiries@ryedaledogrescue.com (Please bear in mind we are all unpaid volunteers and our line is often busy but we will get back to you as soon as we can.
