WINTER

GARDENS

www.aquascapeslandscaping.co.uk

After spending all Summer in the garden, perfecting your outside spaces for BBQs and Parties, it can be easy to let your garden 'do it's own thing' as the months get colder. We can argue its importance as we don't spend as much time out there when it's freezing, but we can't deny we still look through the window! It is easy to assume that gardens lose all of their colour in the winter and are just a mass of green. However this isn’t the case, every plant offers a different shade of green, creating a real impact. To top this off, many plants still flower in winter. Shrubs are particularly good for giving your garden a quick fix, if you buy them when they are young you can simply leave them in a pretty pot on the patio to add a splash of colour.

Attract some wildlife to your garden by setting up a bird table or hanging bird feeders in the trees. Not only will the hungry birds benefit from the extra food on offer, but you will also have the added bonus of being able to watch the wild life from the comfort of your home. For a quick fix garden tidy, get rid of all the fallen leaves on your grass and pathways. They have a tendency to get slippery during the cold damp weather, so it is important to make sure that they are not a safety hazard! Remember to salt or grit your pathways, these can be very slippery after a hard frost. Need a little help with your garden? Call us on 01937 588859 or 07939 972363 for a free quote.

Health & Safety Culture A good Health & Safety culture has to be driven

SIROCCO SAFETY REPORTS CULTURE

from the top of the organisational tree

I’m often asked by Managers how a company can improve its Health & Safety culture. It should be a relatively straightforward answer but unfortunately there is no immediate quick fix. My answer is – A good Health & Safety culture has to be driven from the top of the organisational tree with Owners, Managing Directors, Senior Manager’s etc. being the main engaged players. No matter how many Health & Safety procedures, policies or safe working practices a company has in place, the culture within the company will only be a positive culture if employees are able to engage in Health & Safety. No-one wants to be given a piece of paper to read or have someone talking Health & Safety AT them.

This doesn't engage the individual and almost harks back to school classroom days! In my experience, a good Health & Safety culture is formed, nurtured and maintained through employee engagement. When employees have their ideas, thoughts and opinions listened to and taken on board then they are more likely to engage and want to be part of a positive Health & Safety culture. It is human nature to want to be involved in decisions that affect you. Can you remember the last time that you involved your employees in Health & Safety within your workplace?

In essence, any marginal improvement is winning, and the key to improving performance is to know and assess ourselves in relative terms rather than obsess on fixed scoring 'out of 10'. Just like Dave Alred, we see no limits to the potential of a healthy and vibrant market, and based on our conversations at Comms Vision neither do our trading partners. As our market evolves with new services and business models we look forward to 'Powering Your Potential'. www.deepbluetelecom.co.uk

Powering Your Potential By Ross Knapman Deep Blue Telecom Now in its 11th year, Comms Vision at Gleneagles has become an essential date in the diary of telecom leaders in the UK, and Deep Blue MD, Ross Knapman, was again delighted to participate with the great and the good of the industry. The key theme of the conference was leveraging creativity to improve business performance, which as a leading Telecommunications and Services Company is something we echo, and which we see many of our customers striving for. This year's keynote speaker was elite sports performance coach Dave Alred MBE, mentor to top professional athletes like Jonny Wilkinson and Luke Donald, whose philosophy embraces the idea that there are no limits to our potential at the margins of our performance.

PROTECT YOUR BIGGEST ASSET Steps you can take to keep your roof in good repair. You can get the most out of your roof when it's in good repair. Your home will be better protected, your roof will last longer without having to be replaced, and you might even see some energy savings. Check your roof after storms Detecting problems early is one of the best ways to keep your roof in good condition. That’s why it’s important to perform a quick inspection of your roof after events that may have damaged it. In the aftermath of a heavy rain, hailstorm, or windstorm, look for damaged shingles and downed tree branches that landed on your roof. If you notice damage, call a roofer to help you out. Have Problems Fixed Immediately Roofing problems become worse over time, so make sure you have any problems worked on as soon as you notice them. A patch of missing

shingles or detached flashing can quickly lead to a roof leak, which can be a much more expensive repair to make than fixing shingles or flashing. Have Your Roof Professionally Inspected An annual inspection will extend the life of your roof. Professionals can detect early signs of problems and repair them before they become serious. A professional roofer can also provide suggestions and solutions for improving your roof’s energy efficiency.

To get lean. The deadlift is the perfect exercise to use in any fat loss programme because it uses the biggest muscles in the body, which helps to burn a huge amount of calories during and after the training session. To run faster and jump higher. Deadlifts are a valuable exercise for increasing power and improving force transfer from the lower to the upper body. They can also help you avoid stagnation and boredom from always performing squats. Also, research shows that deadlifts performed at pace can build speed by improving your ability to accelerate through the entire motion of the lift. *only to be performed safely. Deadlift for a strong lower back and better abs. Deadlifts activate all the muscles in the trunk, including the rectus abdominis, the obliques, and the paraspinals of the lower back. Analysis of muscle activity in the core found that the deadlift was far better for training the musculature of the lower back than all other exercises tested, including the back extension and lunge. For better mobility and less pain. Performing deadlifts, (along with other compound lifts) have been found to improve movement patterns in the lower body.

The deadlift teaches you basic movement skills which are increasingly lacking in modern life. Here are five excellent reasons why you should perform deadlifts or variations of, on a regular basis. To break training plateaus. If you programme your deadlift training sensibly, it will make you stronger from head to toe. You will have stronger glutes, hamstrings and back; and will also build strength in the arms and grip, making it extremely useful for other exercises. Helping the Homeless by: Twinkles Nurseries

Did you know there are lots of homeless people in the Leeds area? Lots of people without a roof over their head or a bed to sleep in. Lots of people who don’t know where their next meal is coming from or even their next drink of water.

We would really like to help and would love it if you could join us. Each nursery now has a donations basket in the entrance area and in here you can add anything you can spare to help out. If just a few of our families were able to donate something every week we would be able to help feed a lot of very hungry people!

So next time you’re doing the weekly shop, have a look and see what’s on offer and please, if you can, put a little something extra in your trolley.

There are lots of things that are really useful and these include: crisps, individually wrapped chocolate bars, individually wrapped cakes, re-seal-able drinks, small tins of fish in sauce, tuna meals in foil trays, breakfast bars, cereal bars, packs of biscuits, tinned fruit, dried fruit, long life ready made puddings (rice pudding, jelly, custard pots) and anything else that is longer life and doesn’t need to be refrigerated!

Other items that are useful are: new packs of underwear or socks, packs of tissues, deodorant, toothpaste, tooth brush and baby wipes. These items will be regularly collected from each site and taken to an amazing lady called Sam Hutton, who goes out nearly every night to distribute donations to those in need.

EAT THE SEASONS www.handpfinefoods.co.uk

Each fruit or vegetable has a prime time when it’s at its seasonal best. Some are great for over half of the year; others only hit their peak for a month. Either way it means extra flavour, extra crunch, extra juiciness —all super-fresh and great value. We celebrate eating the right things at the right time: a crisp salad when it’s hot and sunny, a wholesome stew when it’s cold; strawberries in June, Brussels sprouts in December. Better taste – top chefs agree that fresh seasonal produce is best. Better value – research has shown that a basket of fruit and veg bought in the summer can be as much as a third cheaper than the same basket bought out of season. Better for the planet – growing in season requires lower levels of artificial inputs than at other times of the year.

The saying goes that first impressions last. And you only get once chance to make a first impression.. There's also a belief within the industry that buyers make their decision on whether to buy within 10 seconds of arriving at your home. I believe that this is too simplistic, but the reality is that when your potential buyer arrives, if they have a bad first impression you're starting off on the back foot. You'll then have an enormous amount of work to do to try and regain the last momentum and move the prospect into a position of wanting to make you an offer. The problem faced by most people when they come to sell their home is that they fail to see what's under their nose. Indeed, because of familiarity, they often fail to smell what's under their noses! This can include odours from pets that they've long become desensitised to. So, when you are trying to sell your home, you should first try and look dispassionately at your house through the eyes of an observer seeing it for the first time. This is often harder than it seems and you may need to enlist the help of a trusted friend who you can call upon to seek their advice and tell you the brutal truth. Ask them 'If I absolutely had to sell my house and you needed to help me in the best way that you can - what should I do to make the first impression that a buyer receives as amazing as possible?' At the end of the day, it's simply a matter of common sense, a bot of good old elbow grease and a few quid spent. All of which will dramatically enhance and improve the presentation of your property upon arrival. Here's a handy checklist: Clear the garden of any children's toy/trampolines Clear the garage/shed of any junk/items that you will not be taking to your new home Weed the garden and sweep up any leaves Jet wash any pathways and driveways Repair any broken fences and gates Paint any exterior woodwork and metalwork, e.g. gates, fences, gutters and doors Clean windows inside and out Plant seasonal flowers and/or hanging baskets On the day of the viewing make sure that the driveway or roadside is clear for the viewer to park Try to conduct your viewings during the day If your property has two entrances, guide them to the entrance that has the most scenic visual look.

DRINKING YOURSELF TO A BETTER WORKOUT

Drinking enough water before and during your workout can help you get the most out of your workout.

Water is important for all of your cells to function properly. Because you are approximately

70

percent

water, you have to continue to replace the water you lose for your body to keep working.

www.trainfxhealthclub.com You know that water keeps you hydrated during your workout, but you might not know how.

Water acts as a lubricant for your muscles, joints and vital organs. Water is necessary for you to have energy during your workout because it is the transporter of oxygen and glucose throughout your body. Your muscles need water for strength and flexibility. Your joints need water to prevent stiffness and your brain needs water to send messages, like how to regulate your body temperature.

The amount of water you should drink before and during your workout varies for each individual depending on your weight, the type of workout you are doing and your climate. Start with

8

to

16

ounces of water before your workout. Consume one glass of water for each

minutes

to half hour you are working out.

Giving Back... Here at Hopscotch shoes, you will know us for our top quality footwear for your sons and daughters. We love giving the best service, the best price and of course, the best products. However, there are some parts of the world that are much less fortunate than ourselves. Shoes are more of a need than a luxury in these places. Unfortunately, it is often the case where children, no different in age to your child, go years without owning a proper pair of shoes. They put their feet at risk every day, through every terrain in all kinds of weather. An injured foot is nothing out of the ordinary for children in some of these places. With a little help from us, this is how you can make the difference. At all of our shops, we have a shoes recycling bin (see pictures). If you can’t locate it, please let a member of staff point you in the right direction. It would be great if you could put a pair of your shoes that you no longer want or need in one of these bins. We then send them away to get reconditioned before they are shipped all over the world to those in desperate need. We will happily accept any shoe, from little to large and brand new to barely wearable! We have already has 100’s of donations and there is no such thing as too many so please Do think about our scheme when you are next going to throw a pair of shoes away!

FORGET THE FESTIVE SEASON, IT'S COMMUNITY SEASON IN WETHERBY What a night for a Switch On. There was a slight chill to the air but Mother Nature was certainly smiling on us last night with the weather. From fairground rides and the traditional Christmas Market, there was something for everyone. How amazing were all the children who entertained the crowds?. After our Mayor, Norma Harrington, welcomed the growing crowd and opened the festivities, Stagecoach opened the show with some of their show songs from Aladdin, together with some Christmas classics, the audience were left wanting more and boy did the next group deliver! With 70 children from Just For Fun Theatre Group, yes 70! They delivered a superb performance getting everyone involved with A Partridge in A Pear Tree and then blasting a snow machine with a ‘Let it Go’ sing-a-long. Just brilliant. If all that wasn’t enough, up next we had the angelic tones of Sarah Halliday. It’s a tough job to get up in front of so many people on your own, even worse when it’s your first time but Sarah smashed it. It was fabulous to welcome back Christine Talbot to flick the all important switch and this year she was joined by the utterly amazing gold medallist paralympian, Kadeena Cox. Both ladies have a strong connection with Wetherby and what an honour to have such talent lighting up our beautiful town. The finale act of course, in true tradition, marched through the shambles through

a parting crowd. The City of Leeds Pipe Band are a firm favourite in Wetherby and a very fitting finale to a wonderful evening. All in all we think we can safely say a fantastic night was had by all. We really must say thank you to everyone who is involved in the organisation of the evening. Wetherby Business Association, Wetherbyhour, Wetherby Town Council, JM Kay Electrical, Simon Donkin, Suttles Transport, Market Stall erectors, West Yorkshire Police, Leeds City Council, St John’s Ambulance, Welcome to Wetherby helpers and last but by no means least the wonderful Elves who not only erect all the trees and lights but who come back on the evening to help get stalls ready and look after everyone! We can't wait for next year!
