H+H 2023-24 Season Annual Report

Page 1

“Last season was a success with many blockbusters and ambitious pieces. One of our biggest seasons to date, H+H saw Israel in Egypt as the opening project of the season, which I enjoyed conducting very much. H+H Chorus members took all of the solos and made a strong impression. Then there was Bach’s B Minor Mass with Masaaki Suzuki, Brahms’ Requiem with Jamie Burton replacing an indisposed Bernard Labadie and Beethoven’s 9th Symphony with Raphaël Pichon. These major works were all celebrated and enjoyed by our audiences with a lot of positive feedback! The smaller concerts at NEC’s Jordan Hall, like Baroque Love Songs + Other Delights, introduced some lesser known repertoire with Nicola Porpora alongside Handel. I was pleased that this concert was so well-attended and well received.”

Dear Friends of H+H,

“H+H is one of the most exciting ensembles of historically informed performances in the world,” wrote one national critic after the Opening Night of our 210th consecutive season, the most of any performing arts group in America.

In new Artistic Director Jonathan Cohen’s first full season, audiences filled our concerts in record numbers, with sales unsurpassed by any previous season.

Indeed, the word is out about the captivating music-making taking place at H+H. The renowned H+H Chorus returned to New York’s Lincoln Center to perform Handel’s Messiah with the New York Philharmonic, leading The New York Times to declare “The star here was the Handel and Haydn Society Chorus, from Boston.” The Washington Post added “The Handel and Haydn Society Chorus seized each verse with exciting attack and illuminated the music with fire and force.”

In Boston, the Jonathan Cohen Era began with an Israel in Egypt that The Boston Globe called “Sublime. Everything danced without being hurried. The chorus sang with both crisp clarity and a soft sheen; the text seemed to float out. The orchestra played with easy grace.” A season of highlights followed, none more than H+H’s performance of Beethoven’s Ninth on its 200th anniversary. Critics called the performance “exuberant and eternal” and “utterly spontaneous and fresh. In other words, it thundered.”

H+H’s Learning programs showcased diverse and inclusive performances featuring Latin American traditional songs, HHYC alumni, and students from our Boston Public Schools school partners.

The season concluded with the unforgettable HHYC tour to Austria, themed America and the Handel and Haydn Society, which included selections from H+H’s Old Colony Collection, works by Boston-connected composer Florence B. Price, and Negro spirituals led by Anthony Trecek-King. And, our Stone Fellows brought their uplifting energy and expertise to the orchestra during their inaugural season. The Fellows program, the first of its kind among period instrument ensembles, fosters the development of young musicians whose socio-cultural identities have been historically under-represented in period instrument performance.

In all these ways and more, you make it possible for H+H to fulfill our mission. Growth of our endowment through the generosity of the H+H community bolsters our long-term financial stability and strength. There are also significant challenges of higher operating costs for all performing arts organizations including H+H, as shown in the Financial Highlights section of this report—so your annual gifts are more important than ever. Our campaign now under way, You Are the Music, invites wide participation and enables H+H to continue to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul and connect us all with our shared humanity. We are very grateful for your support—thank you!

The 2023–24 Season

Jonathan Cohen officially began his tenure as Artistic Director with Handel’s Israel in Egypt, which featured thirteen soloists from the H+H Chorus, and later conducted Handel’s Messiah and Baroque Love Songs and Other Delights. Harry Christophers made his first appearance as Conductor Laureate with Harry, Haydn + Mozart. H+H Associate Conductor Ian Watson directed Baroque Christmas as well as co-directed Brandenburg Concertos with concertmaster Aisslinn Nosky.

Frequent guest conductors Václav Luks (Beethoven’s Symphony No. 8), Raphäel Pichon (Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9), Masaaki Suzuki (J.S. Bach’s B Minor Mass) all made their returns, while James Burton made his H+H debut with A German Requiem. Violinist Rachel Podger made her directorial debut with British Baroque.

H+H’s performances outside of Boston in the 2023–24 Season included a chamber Messiah performance at Rockport’s Shalin Liu Performance Center, four performances by the H+H Chorus of Messiah with the New York Philharmonic, and a program of works by J.S. Bach in Portland, Maine.

Celebrating Special News

Comprehensive Campaign Silent Phase Concludes

The 2024 fiscal year saw the close of the 3-year quiet phase of H+Hs comprehensive campaign with a record $47 million raised. The launch of the public phase of the campaign began in the 2025 fiscal year, under the name You Are the Music.

Pride Night 2024

H+H hosted its first-ever Pride Night on Friday, April 19, coinciding with our concert of Brahms’ Requiem. Festivities included a post-concert reception in Symphony Hall with participation by staff, musicians, audience members, and the LGBTQ+ community, collaborating with organizations such as BAGLY and Coro Allegro. A larger event is planned for the fiscal year 2025.

The Boy Who Said Wow!

The story that warmed hearts and went viral 5 years ago, returned in a big way with the release of the children’s book, The Boy Who Said Wow, detailing the story of Ronan Mattin, the non-verbal 9-year old boy that exclaimed “Wow!” at our performance of Mozart’s Masonic Funeral Music. Author Todd Boss, Ronan, and his family offered signed copies of the book at our concerts of Bach’s B Minor Mass and at Wellesley Books in June.

Principal Flute Chair

H+H’s Principal Flute chair, held by flutist Emi Ferguson, was generously endowed this year in loving memory of Kate C. Moore.

For Our Musical Future

H+H LEARNING PROGRAMS and YOUTH CHORUSES

Through the H+H Youth Choruses, young singers in grades 2–12 experience a positive and affirming community where they can develop their vocal and music literacy skills, collaborate in performance, connect with professional artists, and build lasting friendships with role models and peers from across the region. During the 2023–24 Season, 149 singers performed in 24 concerts, including the HHYC Austria Tour.

HHYC shared the stage with our professional musicians in notable performances such as Baroque Christmas, Bach St. Matthew Passion with Cantata Singers, Beethoven 9, Bach + Telemann, “Tasso & Wert” with Blue Heron, and the Cappella Clausura Collaboration Concert. Other highlights of the year included performances at the Boston Children’s Museum, Hebrew Senior Center, a workshop with Berklee College of Music Choir Groups, and the “Party for the Pantry” event with the Brookline Food Pantry. In addition to these performances, all HHYC ensembles focused on Latin American music, studying under the guidance of Nurt Villani, conductor of the New Voices and Treble Choruses. Nurt, a Columbia-born musician, helped students deepen their musical knowledge and appreciation of diverse cultural traditions. H+H’s learning programs showcased diverse and inclusive Spring Concerts, featuring Latin American traditional songs, HHYC alumni, and students from our school partners.

The season concluded with the unforgettable HHYC Austria Tour, themed America and the Handel and Haydn Society, which included selections from H+H’s Old Colony Collection, works by Boston-connected composer Florence B. Price, and Negro spirituals led by Anthony Trecek-King.

Strategic Partnerships

School Partnerships

H+H collaborates with three Boston schools to expand access to music education for students during the school day. These music classes at the Mason Elementary School in Roxbury, Winship Elementary School in Brighton, and Mother Caroline Academy in Dorchester draw on students’ natural creativity and desire for self-expression to create a pathway for music literacy, build a foundation for further music exploration, and provide a pipeline for involvement in away-from-school musical opportunities including the H+H Youth Choruses.

Through a sequential standards-based music curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts Arts Curriculum Framework, H+H creates culturally diverse learning opportunities through which all students can fully experience the joy of music and build their confidence and sense of belonging while developing the skills and attitudes that can engage them as makers and consumers of the arts for a lifetime.

H+H x MassArt Partnership Brahms Requiem

For more than a decade, H+H and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design have partnered to explore sources of inspiration in art and add a new layer of artistic interpretation to classical music. Juniors in the MassArt Illustration Department are introduced to a piece on the H+H subscription series by HIP Fellow Teresa Neff and members of the orchestra and then create original illustrations inspired by the music as a curricular assignment. In the spring, a professional jury reviews all the artworks created for this project and a dozen illustrations are selected to be exhibited and made available for sale at the Symphony Hall performances.

The powerful pieces created by students this season in response to Brahms Requiem convey music’s ability to inspire, transform, and connect all of us with our shared humanity.

“To me, Brahms’ Requiem is about remembering loved ones after their passing and continuing to live on with their memories, it is more about the remembrance and love that is found in grief rather than just the sadness.”

Emily Patenaude, artist

“When I listen to Brahms’ Requiem, I imagine nature, and I picture a journey from beginning to end. In this piece I wanted to show the magic of the journey, and how inspiring it can feel to get a glimpse of your goal even while still having progress to make.”

Bre Gutheil, artist

“The last few years have been financially difficult for most cultural institutions nationwide. H+H is no exception. Although the endowment now provides almost three times as much current funding as it did several years ago and annual contributions account for more than 70% of our operating revenue, H+H’s operating expenses in FY2024 exceeded operating revenues by over $760,000. Consequently, our team of committed and enthusiastic musicians, administrators and board members is diligently addressing the urgent need to both reduce expenses and secure significant additional donations.”

Our Mission

The Handel and Haydn Society inspires the intellect, touches the heart, elevates the soul, and connects all of us with our shared humanity through transformative experiences with Baroque and Classical music.

Our Vision

H+H will set the standard for musical experiences that are masterfully performed, historically informed, and passionately shared with the greater Boston community and beyond.
