Annual Report
2022–23 Season

“I’m excited to begin this new chapter with H+H this year and thank you for your warm welcome and supportive energy for this new season. I’m looking forward to our future musical adventures together and I’m thrilled to be a part of this historic and dynamic organization which has at its core a generous and motivated community of supporters and musical enthusiasts.”

Dear Friends and Supporters,
In its 207th consecutive season (the most of any arts organization in the country), H+H continued delivering on its mission to inspire the intellect, touch the heart, elevate the soul and connect us with our shared humanity. Through all its programming, H+H served a total number of over 350,000 people in Boston and beyond.
In November 2022 H+H announced the appointment of Jonathan Cohen as its 15th artistic director, beginning in the 2023-24 Season. Jonny led two programs in 2022-23, prompting the critics to call him “a superb fit for the job” (Arts Fuse); “with Cohen at the helm, H+H’s future looks awfully bright” (Boston Classical Review).
This season also saw the launch of the H+H Stone Fellowship. The first of its kind among period-instrument orchestras, the Fellowship supports exceptionally talented early-career musicians whose socio-cultural identities are underrepresented in the field of early music. Stone Fellows are selected through a competitive process that focuses on excellence and artistry, as they join the H+H orchestra for a two-year tenure. This Fellowship was made possible through a transformative $1 million gift from the James M. and Cathleen D. Stone Foundation and additional support from the National Endowment for the Arts.
The H+H Orchestra and Chorus managed to exceed their consistently superb standards in performances that earned rave reviews from major local news outlets. Even in a season of triumphs, the immersive concert experience Crossing the Deep (about which a BMI reviewer noted “[It] may have been the most important concert in H+H’s history”), The Marriage of Figaro, and the New York performances of Handel’s Messiah stand out as shining examples of the invaluable role that H+H serves, both in our community and throughout the East Coast.
We’re proud to report that our audiences not only kept coming back; they grew. We hit a new record for single ticket sales, surpassing pre-Covid totals by 19%.
Thanks to the invaluable support of the H+H community, we have been able to thrive during these challenging times. This annual report shows how essential participation from our generous community allows H+H to support our youngest musicians through our Education programs and uplift an ever-expanding audience at our concerts in Symphony Hall, Jordan Hall, and New York. Thank you!

The 2022-23 Season: Magic is in the Air
The 2022-23 Season began with a celebratory program of JS Bach and Buxtehude conducted by Jonathan Cohen. Conductors Václav Luks (Beethoven Eroica) returned yet again to the H+H stage, and guests David Stern (Mozart + Mendelssohn), and Rinaldo Alessandrini (Bach Easter Oratorio) made their long-awaited return. Aisslinn Nosky and Associate Conductor and Principal Keyboard Ian Watson co-led a program of Brandenburg Concertos in February.
In November, H+H performed semi-staged versions of Mozart’s masterful and hilarious Marriage of Figaro, the first semi-staged performances of a Mozart opera in H+H’s history. Raphaël Pichon conducted a truly first-rate international cast with James Darrah providing the clever stage direction on Symphony Hall’s concert stage and Molly Irelan designing the production’s period costumes.
The season concluded with performances of Crossing the Deep, a program co-conceived by Resident Conductor Anthony Trecek-King and Programming Consultant Reginald Mobley. This powerful and moving program paired American spirituals with movements of Handel’s Chandos Anthems, tied together by a script developed by the co-creators and spoken word artist Regie Gibson.
H+H continued to perform beyond Boston. 2022-23 performances throughout New England and New York City included: the annual chamber Messiah performances at Rockport’s Shalin Liu Performance Center; one of the first performances at the new Groton Hill Music Center in a program of all J.S. Bach; the first-ever H+H performance at Yale University; a return to Mechanics Hall in Worcester after more than a decade away; and five performances by the H+H chorus of Messiah with the New York Philharmonic at Lincoln Center’s Wu Tsai Theater.

H+H’s Stone Fellows
Carmen Lavada Johnson-Pájaroand Amelia Sie
The Handel and Haydn Society proudly announced recently the Inaugural Stone Fellows, a first of its kind early-career program for musicians among period instrument orchestras. The fellowships will foster the development of two young musicians whose socio-cultural identities have been historically underrepresented in the field. Carmen Lavada Johnson-Pájaro and Amelia Sie will assume their new roles and spend the next two years learning from and performing with H+H musicians.
When asked what she’s looking forward to most, Johnson-Pájaro said, “I look forward to expanding my knowledge and skill under their [H+H musicians] mentorship.”
From Sie’s perspective, “I’m excited to learn and grow over the next two years. H+H was a huge inspiration as I explored becoming a historical performer.” Both musicians were selected after a rigorous nationwide search last spring where they accepted applications from recent graduates of some of the top performing arts schools in the country.
Thanks to the generosity of Jim and Cathy Stone who pledged a transformative $1 million gift, H+H was able to launch the program beginning with the 2023-24 Season in partnership with the New England Conservatory. “Jim and I have been proud to support H+H in many ways over the years,” Cathy said, “and this particular gift aligns with our hope to give back to the Boston cultural community. H+H is providing an opportunity to take leadership in the development of young and talented musicians drawn from a diverse field and we’re happy to play a role in this wonderful program.”

Philip and Marjorie Gerdine Chair
for H+H’s President and CEO, David Snead
When Phil Gerdine attended his very first Board meeting at H+H, he listened to President and CEO David Snead outline the upcoming season, which included an innovative program featuring the award-winning film, Amadeus, on large screen while the soundtrack was played on stage with a live orchestra. However, it was a complex and expensive project and the funds H+H needed to produce it were not included in the budget. It carried some financial risk, as well, making it unlikely H+H could include it. Phil was moved by the idea and phoned David the next morning to pledge his financial backing. It turned out to be the most successful concerts of that season. “I’ve been in top management in public companies throughout my professional career, and the CEO needs the backing from his Board,” said Gerdine.
More recently, Phil made another memorable gift by generously underwriting a newly endowed position at H+H: the Philip and Marjorie Gerdine President and CEO Chair. It will provide critical funds to support innovations and marketing, helping to make classical music accessible to future generations. It is fitting that Phil has funded this business-focused chair, given his great success as an international corporate development executive as well as his early experience in arts management. Phil took challenging management assignments throughout his career with GE and Siemens and served as Managing Director of the Plessey Company PLC.
In creating this Chair, the first of its kind in the history of H+H, Phil sought to also honor his late wife, Dr. Marjorie Gerdine. Both have been long time patrons of the arts including the American Ballet Theatre and City Ballet of New York. Also early in his career, Phil founded and was on-air announcer at WDHA-FM (originally a classical radio station, now the Rock of New Jersey.)
“I am honored to be the first to sit in this newly endowed chair and I thank Phil for his inspiration and honoring H+H with this generous gift.”

Messiah Makes a Difference
About Piroska Soos
Piroska Soos attended Messiah years ago as our guest, and was very moved by the concert. She had studied violin as a student, and was especially impressed by the orchestra. She inquired, “Did we have a planned giving program and could we send appropriate language for her attorney to use. She was updating her will.” As we followed up, we learned she didn’t want recognition nor would she be requiring any restrictions on how the funds might be used. She was an expert tax attorney and just wanted to include H+H in her trust. Although we have recognition events for our 1815 Society she declined participation over the years.
Last year, we were notified that H+H was indeed a beneficiary and we would be receiving the first of several distributions from her estate. It came at a critical point for H+H as we were both building our endowment and investing in growing strategic programs. The H+H investment committee allocated a portion of her estate to our endowment, and another portion to the annual fund supporting education programs. Because our Messiah made a difference in Piroska’s life, she was able to make a plan to provide for our future. H+H thanks her, and all those who plan for the future of music here in Boston by including H+H in their trusts.
Would you, like Piroska, like to include H+H in your estate plans? Please reach out to Marion Westgate, Director of Major Gifts at plannedgiving@handelandhaydn.org with questions or for more information. Thank you for considering a legacy gift to keep the music playing!
Learning for our Youngest Musicians

H+H YOUTH CHORUSES

Through the H+H Youth Choruses, young singers in grades 2-12 experience a positive, affirming community where they can develop their vocal and music literacy skills, collaborate in performance, connect with professional artists, and build friendships with role models and peers from throughout the region. 149 singers performed with HHYC during the 2022-23 Season in 16 concerts. HHYC shared the stage with our professional musicians in performances on the Baroque Christmas and Beethoven Eroica subscription programs. Other highlights of the year included singing the National Anthem at Gillette Stadium in July and collaborating with the MIT Concert Choir to perform Haydn The Creation in April. In our first all-HHYC repertoire focus, all ensembles studied Negro spirituals through a series of workshops with Resident Conductor Anthony Trecek-King.

High School Soloists
H+H supported ten singers on full merit scholarships as High School Soloists this season. In addition to participating in HHYC ensembles and musicianship classes, Soloists receive weekly private voice lessons and group diction classes at the New England Conservatory and present two studio recitals annually in Williams Hall at NEC. This program opens doors for singers to deeply pursue pre-collegiate vocal studies in a supportive environment.

School Partnerships
H+H collaborates with Boston elementary schools to expand access to music education for students during the school day. Through partnerships with six schools across the city, 919 students who otherwise would have not had music at school experienced the joy of creating music together, learned about other cultures through exploration of musical traditions, developed music literacy skills, and connected with accomplished artists of many genres and time periods. We were thrilled to present end-of-year performances in several schools and host guest musicians so students could engage with practicing, professional artists.

H+H x MassArt Partnership
Bach: Easter Oratorio
For more than a decade, H+H and the Massachusetts College of Art and Design have partnered to explore sources of inspiration in art. Juniors in the MassArt Illustration Department are introduced to a piece on the H+H subscription series by HIP Fellow Teresa Neff and members of the orchestra and then create original illustrations inspired by the music as a curricular assignment. In the spring, a professional jury reviews all the artwork created for this project and a dozen works are selected to be framed and exhibited at the Symphony Hall performances. This season, students responded to Bach’s Easter Oratorio.
FROM A MASSART ARTIST
“As an artist, I am fascinated by the process of simultaneous growth and aging as it applies to beings and objects in our world. Looking at the music of Bach’s Easter Oratorio, I saw an opportunity to tie this theme to both his timeless music and the instruments it is played with. Bach’s music undergoes evolution with every performer, listener, and instrument it passes through. It inevitably has distorted from Bach’s vision, but perhaps becoming richer and more majestic in the process of its legacy being added to. This relationship between the individual who sends his creative work out into the world and the people who build its legacy is its own form of social and creative growth and decay, with the two forces linked inexorably.”

The 1815 Society

Each year, the Handel and Haydn Society celebrates members of the 1815 Society legacy group with an annual appreciation event, which includes a reception, luncheon, musical program and (on occasion) a brief honoring of an important founding member. The 2023 Luncheon took place on May 26th at the MIT Endicott House in Dedham and was hosted by Mary and Sherif Nada. The performance was by H+H musicians, David McFerrin, baritone, and Ian Watson on harpsichord.
The Planned Giving Subcommittee chair, Jane Carlson introduced the new members of the 1815 Society, who each received a special lapel pin along with a copy of the Handel and Haydn Society bicentennial history book. This year’s program also included a special tribute to Elizabeth (Bonnie) Wax, an H+H board member and long-term supporter of legacy giving at H+H. Over the course of more than 25 years, Bonnie advocated for long-term sustainable growth of the H+H endowment and the importance of providing for the organization’s future. At the end of the last capital campaign, Instrumental Voices, Bonnie was the driving force to push the membership numbers over the 100 enrollment mark. (The Handel and Haydn Society was founded in the year 1815, thus the significance of the name.).
The Handel and Haydn Society thanks the following donors for including H+H in their long-term financial and estate plans.
