Congratulations!

Employee of the Year ALISON MCDONALD We were thrilled to present Alison McDonald with Hampton Hall’s first Employee of the Year award. Alison officially joined the Club’s culinary team as sous chef in 2019. She came down from her home state of Maine during a busy season to help out with Hampton Hall’s big events such as Member Guest tournaments and the Wounded Heroes Golf Classic. The plan was to help out for two weeks, but Alison clicked with the team and impressed the executive chef so he offered her a permanent position. Alison was drawn by the opportunity to take on new responsibilities in banquets and found that working with the Hampton Hall culinary team “felt like home.” Alison earned her degree from the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY. Before joining us at Hampton Hall, she worked at Lake Parlin Lodge and Cabins, a snowmobile resort in Maine. She is now our banquet sous chef and we are most fortunate to have her as part of the Hampton Hall Club team. Interesting fact: Alison also enjoys reading, knitting, and crocheting. 4 | Spring 2024

Quarter Century PGA Member BRENT CARLSON Congratulations to Brent Carlson on being recognized as a Quarter Century Member by PGA of America! Brent has served as Head Golf Professional here at Hampton Hall Club for over ten years.

Employee of the Quarter SLY BRIMM Congratulations to Sly Brimm on being awarded Employee of the Quarter. Sly has been a part of the Hampton Hall team since 2008! He started out as a food runner and a few years later began assisting with facilities maintenance as well. Sly now works full time in the maintenance department but you will still see him from time to time helping out with dining and event service. Originally from Montego Bay, Jamaica, Sly came to the US in 2007 and worked as a line cook at Sea Grille and Brotherhood of Thieves in Nantucket, MA. He headed to Deer Valley, Utah for the winter season and then found his way to South Carolina. Sly has a loving wife and three sons. Outside of his work at Hampton Hall, Sly is also a DJ! When asked what he likes about Hampton Hall, Sly said, “It’s not just coming to work. It is like one family including the members and staff. Everyone has always been good to me.”

Member Spotlight We are thrilled to feature Jeanette Taylor Jones, Al Panu, and Larry Sanders in this issue of The Bridge. All three Hampton Hall members have served on Hilton Head Hospital’s Governor’s Board. We are honored to have such dedicated individuals in our community, and we hope you enjoy learning more about them!

Jeanette Taylor Jones

Al Panu

Larry Sanders

A family of five, Jeanette Taylor Jones, her spouse Carl and three children moved to Hampton Hall from Minnesota fourteen years ago. They previously lived in Burlington, Vermont, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Pound Ridge and Vestal, NY. Their daughter is an advisor at Georgia Southern in Savannah. Their oldest son is a security officer at Palmetto Hall and their youngest owns a car wash in Atlanta, GA. Carl has a master’s degree in mechanical engineering and is a retired IBM executive. Jeannette’s educational background is in nursing, business administration and law, and has afforded her the opportunity to work in the public, private and governmental sectors. The Jones family decided to make South Carolina home after having a time share on Hilton Head Island since 1976. They selected Hampton Hall after exploring places on and off island. Jeanette and Carl chose Hampton Hall because of the great location and amenities. Today, Jeanette and Carl enjoy dining at the Club. They stay active and walk and ride bikes through the community. They also like to travel, visit restaurants, serve on boards, and participate with their sorority and fraternal organizations. Jeanette and Carl especially appreciate Hampton Hall’s peacefulness, security, and over-all friendliness of the residents.

Al and Judith Panu lived in the Atlanta metro area for over three decades before relocating to Bluffton in August 2015, when Al accepted the offer to serve as Chancellor at USCB. Al had pursued a career in academia and Judith alternated between a career in community counseling and being a stayat-home mom for their three children – now successfully launched in Atlanta and Asia.

Larry and Edwina (Eddie) Sanders have been happily married for 36 years. They moved to the Lowcountry from the Philadelphia area in 2002. Larry retired after a 30-year career in sales and marketing for Wyeth/ Whitehall International Pharmaceutical Company. As Sr. Marketing Director, he had the responsibility to market the Multivitamin/Mineral CENTRUM into the world’s largest global brand. He was born and educated in Knoxville, Tennessee where he received his BS in Science Education in 1968 from Knoxville College. In 1963 he became a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and continues to be an active member of the local alumni chapter today. Larry and Eddie moved to Hampton Hall in 2015 after residing in Oldfield for 13 years. They absolutely love Hampton Hall, and find the diverse community and location in Bluffton are ideal. Larry and Eddie also enjoy the excellent amenities. Larry is very active in several organizations in the Beaufort, Jasper, and Hilton Head Island communities. These include Church of the Palms UM, serving now as Council Chairman following 12 years as Lay Leader. He is an ambassador and mentor in the Black Equity Program, and a member of the Rotary Club of Hilton Head Island. Larry believes and lives by the motto “Service Above Self”. When not busy with their volunteer commitments, Larry and Eddie find quality time to travel, cruising their favorite destinations and enjoying the year-round good life of the Lowcountry.

“It’s a great place to live with many activities for people of all ages.” 10 | Spring 2024

“HAMPTON HALL IS AN EXCELLENT

COMMUNITY WITH A WIDE DIVERSITY OF GENEROUS PEOPLE FROM ALL WALKS OF LIFE AND A HAVEN AMIDST OUR GROWING, BUSTLING TOWN.” —AL AND JUDITH PANU

Hampton Hall was a clear and first choice for the Panus. With its central location, they are able to serve the three USCB campuses. Al and Judith find Hampton Hall visually and socially appealing with amenities that include optional golf, tennis, swimming, on-site dining, and an assortment of clubs. They also love its emphasis on nature and preservation, juxtaposed to welldeveloped roadways and properties. As nature enthusiasts, Judith and Al enjoy taking long walks around the scenic neighborhood, getting to know their neighbors, and enjoying delicious fare and socials at the restaurants. They especially appreciate the people and beautiful scenery. “It’s truly a sanctuary after hectic days at work.”

hat were you up to in 1999? In 1999 we were getting ready for Y2K, Tiger Woods won his first championship and Star Wars: Episode I was the biggest seller at the box office. 1999 is also when my journey as a PGA Professional began. Twentyfive years is a long time and yet it continues to go by so quickly. Someone once said that “time flies when you are having fun.” I have always tried to make golf a positive experience for those who share their love of our great sport. A quick recollection of images throughout the years in my memory has too many smiles to count. A lot of good times on and off the course and even a few great shots along the way. Our current pace at Hampton Hall is to play around 40,000 rounds a year. A quick click of the calculator shows that through those 25 years I have had an association with around a million rounds of golf — my role in some rounds obviously being more involved than others. That’s a lot of golf! I am so thankful for the great environment there is for golf here at Hampton Hall and each member that makes this place so great.

Time flies when you are having fun!

re you looking to add color to your yard that will last through the summer and fall, without worrying about deer? I recommend planting Lantana. I plant Golden Mound Lantana around the Golf Clubhouse every May or June. It’s easy to grow, hard to kill, and if you treat it like normal summer annuals, they look fantastic! I prefer Golden Mound because they only grow to around fifteen inches and there’s a variety of colors to choose from. Plant Lantana in full sun and in well-drained soil. Put an ounce or two of 14-14-14 100% osmocote fertilizer. Make sure the fertilizer is entirely osmocote, along with some granularity Thiophanate-methyl in the bottom of the planting hole. Don’t plant the root ball too deep, ensure the soil is moist and get ready to watch your plants grow. Once rooted, cut the water back or off, and only water as needed. You can prune the ends of the plant to make it denser, and check out videos on YouTube to learn more. You can also spray additional fungicide and fertilizer to increase Lantana blooms. The only downside to Lantana is white flies. If your plants stop blooming, nine times out of ten it’s due to white flies. Look at the back side of the plant leaves and you will see flies and/or their eggs. There are many ways to treat white flies, from homemade mixtures to chemical treatments. The internet has tons of information on how to treat white flies. Try using a method that won’t affect butterflies or bees, as they will be attracted to your Lantana. Remember, only cut your Lantana back in the winter to twelve inches so you can enjoy them again next summer.

The Benefits of Water Aerobics BY MICHELE DICARLO Sports, Recreation & Fitness Director FITNESS DIRECTOR Michele DiCarlo interviewed water aerobics participants on why they attend each week and what they’ve gained from the activity.

Q: How long have you been participating in water aerobics? A: Between 1-18 years. Now, that’s a commitment! Q: How do your joints feel after class? A: “So much better” was the overall consensus. Say goodbye to chronic aches and pains. Q: Do you feel stronger? A: Yes! Most participants feel their whole body is stronger. Q: Have you had better reports from your doctor since participating in water aerobics? A: Yes, especially the ortho doctor. Water aerobics is a low impact exercise, which alleviates joint pressure and helps with mobility. Q: Was it intimidating to start taking the class? A: No, everyone was very welcoming and nice. The group of ladies is very friendly! Q: Rank your instructor from 1-10 and why. A: The ladies gave an overall ranking of 8. We have 3 different water aerobics instructors. The instructor provides great music, she’s enthusiastic, motivating, and fun. Q: Have you made any new friendships? A: Yes, many! The ladies get together on a regular basis for lunch, birthdays, holidays, and dinners. It’s a very social group. Q: Overall, how do you benefit from participating in water aerobics? A: The body feels better, more energized, less joint pain and muscle aches, and there’s nothing better than making new friends. Water aerobics is held Tuesdays and Thursdays at 10:00 AM and Wednesdays at 10:30 AM. Water Zumba is held Mondays and Fridays at 10:00 AM. Both classes take place in the indoor pool unless the sun is shining and we’re able to move to the outdoor pool. Stop in and try one of our classes, and join these smiling faces.

pring and warmer temperatures are in the air! With increased outdoor activities let’s remember to apply sunscreen and to reapply when perspiration occurs. While moderate natural vitamin D is healthy, a waterproof 30 SPF helps block 97% of the sun’s UVB harmful burning rays. If you feel your skin is burning, you likely are getting sunburned and it is time to seek shade. The sun’s rays are strongest between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM, so take care and prepare! Use diligence with new sunscreen (if product is inconsistent with texture or watery, it is time for new sunscreen). Also, if your skin is feeling parched, try some hydrating, serene massage and facial treatments in the Spa.

This spring, we proudly celebrate 13 Years of Honoring our Heroes with the theme:

“Teeing it up for Two Million.”

We Salute Our Local Military Heroes LOWCOU NTRY F O U NDATION FOR W OU NDED MIL ITARY HEROES

F

or the past 13 years, the Lowcountry Foundation for Wounded Military Heroes (LFWMH) has engaged the community to raise funds in support of qualified charities who provide vital assistance to combat wounded military heroes and their families in the Lowcountry of South Carolina and Georgia’s Coastal Empire. As a 100% volunteer organization, begun by a group of visionary golfers right here in Hampton Hall, we donate 100% of the proceeds from our fundraising events to Birdies for the Brave who, in turn, distribute these funds to our specified charities. This past year LFWMH surpassed our previous annual donations with $250,000 going to six charities bringing our total donations since inception to $1,989,000. Over 82% of this total was used to provide: 28 service canines through K9’s for Warriors for heroes suffering from PTSD, 6 scholarships for surviving children of Special Operations Personnel through the Special Operations Warrior Foundation, and 11 mortgage-free homes for wounded combat veterans through Military Warriors Support Foundation. This spring, we proudly celebrate 13 Years of Honoring our Heroes with the theme — Teeing it Up for Two Million. For the first time our Wounded Heroes Golf Classic will span three venues — April 22 at Wexford and May 20 at both Oldfield and here at Hampton Hall where it all began. This not only allows more participants to enjoy a round of golf with a wounded hero, but also gives more heroes the opportunity to participate and reconnect with each other on and off the golf course. Additionally, it has brought an increased awareness and additional

20 | Spring 2024

support to the LFWMH which will surely help us to more than surpass the $2,000,000 mark. This will allow us to provide more financial assistance to those who have given of themselves by fighting for the freedoms we all enjoy. Now is your chance to get involved! It’s not too late. We invite you to register your foursome to play a round of golf with a wounded hero and to enjoy all the additional festivities to include a golf clinic, parachute jump, presentation of colors, a scrumptious buffet, an awards ceremony, and a live auction.
