Your Fulham is your No 1 guide to what is going on in the area this summer elcome to the first edition of Your Fulham magazine – a quarterly publication designed to keep you informed about what is happening in your area. You will be pleased to know that, just like h&f news which closed in April, all the production costs are paid for by the advertising it generates. Flicking through the pages, you will see there is a huge amount happening. For example, there is the potential redevelopment of Earls Court exhibition centres after 2012. As a landowner we want to looking at using this opportunity to bring affordable homes, jobs and community facilities to the area – including new, modern homes for people living on West Kensington and Gibbs Green estates. When it comes to planning we need a balanced approach, preserving our character and conservation areas while encouraging growth. Growth is the engine of economic opportunity and it is the pathway to helping people move out of poverty. That is why we are going for growth in our three Opportunity Areas: Earls Court, White City and Old Oak. In total we want to create 38,000 jobs and build 20,000 homes along the West London Line – providing a new economic lung for London. The area around Carnwath Road in south Fulham is also earmarked for new homes and jobs, yet we are very concerned that Thames Water’s plans for a ‘super sewer’ entry shaft would not only destroy these ambitions but, much more worryingly, it would bring major disruption to thousands of people already living close to the site. The sewer is designed to prevent sewage from entering the Thames. The aims may be admirable, but the reality is different. Not only would the sewer fail to capture all of the sewage overflow, it will do nothing to stop flooding. Meanwhile, your water bill is set to rise by £65 per year for life to pay for it. The Thames is already one of the cleanest rivers in Europe and we all want it to stay that way, but I think there are better solutions that are less costly and will bring less disruption. Hammersmith & Fulham Council will continue to make the case against the super sewer and make the case against Carnwath Road being used for site selection. A built-up residential area is not the place for a construction project of this size, especially when there are green space alternatives. Finally, on a positive note, the council and local businesses are very much looking forward to bringing you our annual Celebrate Fulham festival at the end of June, showcasing the best that the area has to offer. MORE police officers than ever before are set to patrol Fulham and the borough’s other two town centres thanks to a £5million boost from local taxpayers and businesses. Hammersmith & Fulham Council is ploughing £1.3m a year into the Met’s coffers, with local firms adding an extra £350,000 a year. The cash will be used to boost the standard Safer Neighbourhoods Teams (SNT) in the borough’s three town centres – which are based on one sergeant, two PCs and three PCSOs and are paid for by the Mayor of London. The new arrangement will see the council focusing its resources on more warranted officers, although the PCSOs funded by the Mayor of London will remain. Two more inspectors, four extra sergeants and 38 additional PCs have now joined the battle against crime as the council calls on the police to ‘get tough’ on criminals. Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for residents services, said: “Beat bobbies beat crime and, despite the nationwide spending squeeze, we have found a way to improve our town centre squads by putting more PCs on the front-line than ever before. “This will give us some of the best policed town centres in Britain.” In 2007, H&F Council became one of the first local authorities in the UK to use its own money to pay for extra beat

together over the past few years and the Broadway is now a much nicer place to be.” By taking advantage of the Met’s ‘matched funding’ offer, taxpayers are also saving about £232,000 on the cost of buying in PCs, meaning the new contract offers far greater value for money to residents, according to the council. The three squads will work on tailored shift patterns designed to sharpen the focus on problem times and areas. HammersmithLondon, the group which represents businesses around Hammersmith Broadway, is also ploughing in about £100,000 to help fund additional officers in the ward. “Residents are getting more cops for their buck than ever before,” added Cllr Smith. “We are giving the Met the tools to cut crime and now we expect results. FULHAM residents have united against Thames Water’s super sewer proposals by forming the action group Rats (Residents Against Thames Sewer) as the council calls on the water company to explore alternative solutions. The utility giant’s bosses want to use land next to Carnwath Road in Fulham as the main site for their £3.6billion, 20-mile-long sewer, which is also known as the Thames Tunnel. Thames Water has defended the structure – which would be bigger than the Channel Tunnel – by saying that it has been designed to increase the capacity of London’s Victorian sewer system, and reduce the quantity of sewage which spills into the river after heavy rainfall. But more than 3,500 people so far have signed a petition against the super sewer, with opponents angry that water rates will rise by least £65 per year to pay for the scheme, while building causes years of disruption to south Fulham residents. The mammoth construction project is expected to take at least seven years of work, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and needs a large area of open land to get heavy drilling equipment into the ground and to excavate waste from the tunnel. Alex Schniewind, who lives in Beltran Road and speaks on behalf of Rats, said: “We stand to gain nothing from this debacle except a decade of disruption from a major construction site that is a stone’s throw from eight schools and nurseries, parks and people’s homes, not to mention the decades beyond when our landscape will be blighted by a venting column spewing noxious gases.” Concerns voiced by residents include:

FULHAM Town Hall could be converted into a boutique hotel, creating new jobs in the town centre as the council looks to trim its debt mountain. In February, Hammersmith & Fulham Council agreed to sell the underused premises opposite Fulham Broadway tube station to reduce its historic £133million debt burden, which is costing taxpayers £2.5m a year in interest payments. The building, built in 1888, was put on the market to prospective buyers in May and the council is committed to retaining the Grade ll-listed town hall’s heritage and identity. The historic building architects’ firm Hawkins Brown has been appointed by the council to suggest ways in which the building might

be converted by potential bidders, with early proposals including boutique hotel and retail/leisure uses. The proposals also show there may be the potential to retain the chamber and halls for some public use. The council has to make £65m of savings in the next three years, with most people who responded to a consultation held last year agreeing that it would be sensible to sell the building so more money could be directed towards vital frontline services. Cllr Nick Botterill, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, said: “As one of the smallest local authorities in the country, we do not need, and cannot afford, two town halls. “We want to see the building itself brought back to life as part

of the biggest regeneration of the area since the Broadway development. Not only would the upkeep of the building no longer be a burden to taxpayers, but the proceeds from the sale would help protect key services. “Taxpayers have told us that they do not want us to continue to spend millions of pounds simply maintaining a building that is woefully underused and underoccupied. They have said that they would prefer us to look at innovative ways we can bring it back into use while preserving its heritage in a way that benefits Fulham as a whole. “We are particularly excited that there is scope to retain the chamber and halls for public use and believe that this really is the best possible solution for residents.”

Maya Donelan says a string of major projects in SW6 mean the 40-year-old Fulham Society is as busy as ever checking and discussing the many planning applications

In its 40-year history, the group has battled to ‘keep Fulham an agreeable place in which to live’, in the words of secretary Maya Donelan, 73. Maya, who was made an MBE for her voluntary work in Fulham – including her role in the society – said a string of major development projects had made the work of the civic group even more important. “There’s plenty happening, from the huge changes proposed for the redevelopment of Earls

Court to the changes at Fulham Reach and Lots Road,” she said. “And then there’s the sale of Fulham town hall…” Maya said the Fulham Society’s stance on the town hall sale was to retain community use within the building – for example, allowing public rooms to be used for art shows, functions and wedding receptions. “Although the big events rooms need a fair bit of restoration, the downstairs room with all the stained glass is lovely,” she said. Planning applications are routinely checked and discussed by

the Fulham Society committee, with the main aim being to ensure new buildings pass the ‘agreeable’ test, for residents and visitors. Another of the society’s roles is as the driving force behind Celebrating Fulham, an event in its eighth year which the group started, and which is co-ordinated jointly with Hammersmith & Fulham Council. The society is also backing Fulham’s contribution to the national celebration of 400 years of the King James Bible, with an event featuring Fulham actor Lance Pierson performing The

Membership of the Fulham Society currently stands at around the 600 mark – a very respectable total for any group. The society was founded following the successful campaign, by an informal group of residents, in 1971 to prevent the construction of a huge hotel which would have dominated the river frontage near All Saints Church, by Putney Bridge. A BOOK that chronicles the history of Bishop’s Park is to be printed later in the year. Published by the Friends of Bishop’s Park, the 96-page book has been written to coincide with the restoration of the area, a task which is due for completion in the autumn. Written by Sally Miller, A History of Bishop’s Park contains 100 historic pictures and maps together with contemporary photographs by Angelo Hornak. The Friends commissioned Robert Wilkinson of the Oral History Society to record interviews with residents, while the Bishop of London has written a foreword. Roger Weston, vice chairman of the Friends of Bishop’s Park, said: “I have been living close to the park since 1975 and I am very excited by the restoration scheme and look forward to its completion. “This book is a thoroughly well-researched study, an interesting read, and will be an attractive

Adult learning and skills service “I think I went into shock when I was made redundant in February. I’d worked all my adult life and thoroughly enjoyed it. It was huge knock to my confidence and I felt very lost”.

Instead of sitting at home I came to the Macbeth centre and signed up for an adult education salsa class. It wasn’t really work focused but it certainly cheered me up and got me moving. One day I saw a poster for the mentoring course on the notice board so I applied. I was invited along for interview and was accepted onto the course.

It felt strange and I was nervous as my experience of education when I was at school was not a particularly happy one. At seventeen and eighteen I was a distracted teenager, which resulted in not much studying and disappointing A level results. However, I can honestly say that studying as an adult here is nothing like school. I have loved every minute of the course, it was like a breath of fresh air. It made me think and use my brain in a new way. I learnt many new skills, not least, how to actively listen.

Being unemployed was very stressful and the course not only gave me new skills and a new direction but restored my confidence.

My story has a happy ending, two weeks ago I started a new job working for Hammersmith & Fulham Housing and Procurement. It’s good to be back at work. I think adult education classes are invaluable and I will continue to study part time in the evening.

When interviewed under caution, Hennessy admitted subletting her Osram Court council flat. She also admitted failing to declare changes that would affect her benefits. Hennessy pleaded guilty to four charges of benefit fraud against H&F Council, four charges of benefit fraud against the pensions department and

a charge of fraud against the housing association. On May 3, at Isleworth Crown Court, Hennessy was sentenced to three months in prison, suspended for two years. She was also told to do 150 hours of unpaid work to be completed within two years. In total, Hennessy dishonestly claimed £12,332 of housing benefit, £1,989 of council tax benefit and £6,665 from the Department of Work and Pensions.

Karen takes up the story. “I was made redundant and the business was sold… so as I was the manager I decided to take it over. We do children’s clothes up to seven, we’ve some odds and ends

of furniture and I’ve also recently started doing toys too.” Trestle tables will be out on shop forecourts on June 25 and there will be limbo dancing, face-painting, free cup cakes and a pottery workshop among the attractions. Secondhand books and organic vegetables from Bishop’s Park allotments will be on sale, and there will also be wine tasting. Virtually every shop in the long street will be offering festive discounts on goods and services, so the place is set to become a bargain-hunters’ mecca. Shop windows will be decorated and themed, and there will be live

music (sponsored by the Greedy Buddha) and a pop the balloon offer at party shop Circus Circus. Other food stalls are planned, with Randalls supplying tasty sausages, while a live jazz band will be playing smooth, smoochy Sinatra-style music outside Il Pagliaccio restaurant. There will also be Spanish dancing. Money left over after the fun day and discount week will go towards providing Christmas lights in Wandsworth Bridge Road. “Hopefully it will all work out well,” said Karen. “We’re all really looking forward to it – it’s all come together in the space of about four weeks!”

Roaring through Fulham IF YOU HAD STROLLED DOWN TO THE FULHAM END OF KING’S ROAD ON A SHOPPING TRIP FOR TRENDY CLOTHES BACK IN THE 1960s, IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN A FULLY GROWN LION CATCHING YOUR EYE INSTEAD, AS TIM HARRISON REPORTS THE heart-warming tale of a lion which once padded the pavements of Fulham is being told by guide Simon Rodway this month. Christian the lion was one of the sights of Swinging London in the 1960s, curled up in the window of a furniture shop. People ﬂocked to Sophisticat in World’s End, at the Fulham end of King’s Road, not only to buy stripped-pine furniture, but also to admire Christian... an animal named by someone with a quirky sense of humour. So popular has the lion’s story become that it will soon be a Hollywood movie. It certainly is an extraordinary story. Back in the 1960s, the proud boast of Harrods was that you could buy anything there. In 1969 the Knightsbridge department store bought a lion cub from Ilfracombe Zoo in Devon, when the animal park closed down. The cub, weighing two and a half stone (16 kilos), was sold to Australians John Rendall and Anthony ‘Ace’ Bourke, who ran Sophisticat, and who named the shop in honour of their unusual pet. Kensington High Street. He had trips to the seaside and was allowed to exercise in a Fulham churchyard. But Christian grew, the way lions do, and after a year weighed more than 13 stone. A chance visit to Sophisticat by Bill Travers and Virginia McKenna, the stars of the 1966 film Born Free, led to Christian being flown to Nairobi to be introduced to the wild in Kenya’s Kora game reserve. Conservationist George Adamson released Christian into the unfamiliar environment… but the story didn’t end there. Intrigued to know what had happened to their former pet, John and Anthony flew to Africa. Their reunion has become a major YouTube hit. “Christian stared at us in a very intense way,” John later recalled. “I knew his expressions, and I could see he was interested. We called him, and he stood up and started to walk towards us, very slowly. “Then, as if he had become convinced it was us, he ran towards us, threw himself on to us, knocked us over, and hugged us, like he used to, with his paws on our shoulders.” Reassured, two wild lionesses and cubs who were with Christian, also joined the bizarre group in the emotional moment. The incredible story generated documentaries and books, including A Lion Called Christian, published in 2009, and a children’s book, Christian the Hugging Lion, with a Hollywood movie now in the pipeline. Sophisticat, the shop, still exists in a different form (for one thing, the name has evolved to Sophisto Cat). The owners have changed, and it is now at 188 Wandsworth Bridge Road, Fulham, but it will be the finishing point for this month’s local history walk, coinciding with the start of the Wandsworth Bridge Road fun day as part of Celebrating Fulham. Simon Rodway, a Blue Badge guide whose ‘trademark’ is a silver cane, is featuring the story of Christian in the walk, leaving the shopping centre exit of Fulham Broadway tube on June 25 at 11am. As well as telling Christian’s tale, the walk takes in the Peterborough estate, where ‘lion houses’ are decorated with terracotta figures.  Booking is essential for the free walk. A MASTERPLAN to create thousands of new homes in the borough’s most high-profile development has been revealed. The proposal for the Earls Court site in north Fulham, which covers the Earls Court Exhibition Centre complex, Transport for London depot and the West Kensington and Gibbs Green housing estates, imagines a future of four villages and a high street, linking North End Road with Warwick Road. Developers want to build thousands of homes and create more than 10,000 permanent new jobs, providing a massive boost to the local economy.

It is the result of more than a year’s consultation with residents and local interest groups to make sure they could have their say. Inspiration for the scheme has been drawn from the surrounding areas, with planners Sir Terry Farrell & Partners using nearby Kensington and Fulham to guide their designs. Residents in the West Kensington and Gibbs Green estates have been guaranteed a home in the scheme if development does go ahead. Proposals could significantly increase the amount of affordable housing, helping people who live and work in the borough get onto

the property ladder so they can stay here for generations to come. Hammersmith & Fulham Council is putting in place a series of measures to make sure local residents would have the training and skills they need to make the most of the new jobs and opportunities. Detailed plans for the first site in the development in Seagrave Road have been unveiled to residents, with a planning application submitted this month. We all love fabulous new clothes but not the unfortunate side effects. Our bank managers don’t understand the importance of shiny new shoes, and buying heaps of new stuff is pretty terrible for the planet.

Swishing involves getting people together to swap gorgeous clothes and party at the same time. How to swish: 1) Bring between one and five items of clothing, pairs of shoes, bags or accessories. Items must be clean, good condition and something that you are proud to hand on. No children’s clothes please. 2) For each item you bring we’ll give you a ticket, you can then take as many items as you bring. 3) You can drop off items from 2.00pm onwards. 4) The clothes will be sorted and hung up on racks, from 3.00pm you can browse and from 3.15pm you can pick what you want.

5) The textile recycling charity, TRAID, will be on hand to help you make your new clothes your own - demonstrating easy ways to customise an outfit. THE proposal to build a high-speed rail line between London and Birmingham would include a major new interchange hub in the north of the borough. As a result, local residents, businesses and organisations have overwhelmingly welcomed the scheme put forward by the Department of Transport (DfT). The development would bring significant investment to an area of the borough which is deemed by the council to be in need of major regeneration. Estimates suggest a boost of 20,000 jobs in west London and 10,000 new homes. Old Oak, where the station would be situated, suffers more than most from the effects of unemployment and poor housing. The DfT consultation into high-speed rail runs through July. And so far, canvassing of opinion in the local area has revealed significant levels of support. Now, the Get H&F Moving campaign is collecting more ideas for improving the borough’s roads, buses and train services ahead of a transport summit in the autumn. Since the council launched Get H&F Moving, residents have shared their views on parking, roadworks, congestion and unreliable buses. This has been through the council’s website, Twitter and facebook pages, and at an open day with the ‘listening cab’. There will be another roadshow event on July 2 at the Fair on the Green in Parsons Green from 12.15-1.45pm where residents can speak to councillors about their transport troubles. Cllr Botterill, deputy leader and cabinet member for environment, said: “We have heard some very valid points and some excellent suggestions on improving trafﬁc ﬂow and parking. The council is collecting all comments and the best suggestions and ideas will be debated at a transport summit later in the year. Many residents have discussed congestion and getting stuck in trafﬁc jams – whether in the car, on their bikes or on the bus. AN INTERNATIONAL cycling race will pedal through Fulham in August. A hundred cyclists will ride along Fulham Road on Sunday, August 14, in a trial race ahead of next summer’s Olympics. It will start at The Mall in St James’s Park at 9am before travelling down Fulham Road into Wandsworth and Richmond. The racers will then tour Surrey before returning later that day. The event promises to be an exciting spectacle for families

and cycle race fans, and is free to watch. Transport for London (TfL) says the entire length of Fulham Road will close all day for the race. The Circle line will also close, with the District line suspended between Edgware Road and Earls Court, and the Hammersmith and City line suspended between Baker Street and Hammersmith. TfL has written to residents within a 400-yard radius of the route and will provide more details of the event over the com-

ing weeks. Road closures and parking bay suspensions will in place to let the race through. On the day vehicles will not be allowed to drive or park on the race route. Pedestrians will be able to cross at marshalled points but there will be no vehicle access to affected buildings. £85 NOISE FINE IS ‘DERISORY’ A COURT’S decision to fine a shop owner just £85 has been condemned as sending out the wrong message to businesses that flout noise and smell regulations. At West London magistrates’ court on April 21, shop owner Mohammed Azeem was found guilty of two counts of failing to comply with a noise abatement order. One neighbour, who lives with his wife directly above the shop, said: “The £85 fine is absolutely derisory. When we moved into this flat three and a half years ago it was our pride and joy. Now we hate it.” Azeem was also ordered to pay £1,000 in compensation and £500 costs.

Those European campaigns start with two new faces in charge though, thanks to the departures of Chelsea’s Carlo Ancelotti and Fulham’s Mark Hughes. In the end, Chelsea topped the fair play league for fewest yellows and reds, maximum respect towards opponents, positive play and club official behaviour, with Tottenham Hotspur second and Manchester United third. Fulham were fourth, ahead of relegated Blackpool by a mere 0.01 of a point. As the three clubs above Fulham had already won European places, the Whites were next in line. It means slightly shorter summer holidays for the Fulham players because everyone will have to be back in full training by June 23 for a European fixture on June 30. If Fulham are to repeat what most fans regard as their greatest season ever, in 2009-10, and progress to the Europa League final, it will entail a total of 23 matches. MAKING a splash is the aim of a local charity holding a marathon fundraising challenge next month. Hammersmith & Fulham Action on Disability (Hafad) is looking for people who will swim any distance ranging from two lengths to five miles, with the aim of completing an entire marathon – 1,650 lengths of the swimming pool – in the space of 12 hours. Hafad has represented the rights of disabled people in the borough for 30 years. The swimathon is at Fulham Pools in Lillie Road, on Sunday, July 10, from 8am-8pm. Hafad fundraiser James Coke said: “Ninety-eight per cent of our income comes from local government funding, which in the present conditions is unsustainable. If we can get 50 swimmers all raising £200 that would mean that we have made £10,000 for the charity. “We are also organising a sixweek swimming training course for people who are interested.” And H&F Council leader Stephen Greenhalgh said: “Across the borough, wellorganised voluntary groups are grasping the nettle and realising they can no longer rely on the council to fund them at the same level in these difficult financial times. “Hafad deserves credit for raising funds in such an imaginative way.” Just a few months ago, Hafad launched a loyalty card scheme involving local traders. THE cost of road closures in the borough in the next football season is going to fall. Hammersmith & Fulham council taxpayers will save more than £100,000 because football clubs are being handed the bill for managing traffic. In August, when the new season starts, Fulham and Queens Park Rangers will become fully responsible for paying for extra traffic control around Craven Cottage and Loftus Road. Until now, the clubs have paid nothing for the service, which includes closing roads to motorists and keeping traffic flowing safely in the area. Since 2002, the job has been carried out by the Met Police, with support from the council, which has footed the bill for all traffic management costs. The council used to provide and put up parking suspension signs and road barriers, and also had to send a lead officer to each

match to help deal with parking and safety issues. H&F’s budget for trafﬁc management last year was £138,000 but, since December, stewards at both Fulham and QPR have been taking part in trials where they have been responsible for all aspects of trafﬁc management. The trials have proved so successful that the council has already saved £30,000 between the two clubs, and recent trials by Chelsea FC around Fulham Broadway mean H&F has saved another £24,000. Cllr Greg Smith, the council’s cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “It is no secret that councils across the country are tightening their belts and if this pioneering scheme was brought in for all English football

league teams, collectively local authorities could save taxpayers a small fortune.” Ch Insp Steve Riley, of the Met Police, said that it was a matter for the clubs to deal with, but the police would still have a presence around the grounds and carry out enforcement. “Football matches are private events and, rightly, the management of traffic and supporters linked to those matches is an issue for the clubs to deal with,” he said. “Police will continue to provide support to clubs at matches across the borough. The change will mean that more officers are able to concentrate on their core role of policing the borough 24/7.” Rangers’ promotion is expected to lead to some matchday changes around their ground. For example, parking bays are likely to be suspended more often to make room for TV vehicles in Loftus Road. Any closures or suspensions will be clearly flagged up with advance warning signs. There will be no major changes for residents and those wanting to gain access to their roads will need to carry identification and valid residents’ parking permits or visitors Smart cards, as they currently do. H&F Council is also working with Chelsea FC and the police to come to an agreement on managing traffic in the Fulham Broadway area. Club stewards have already been carrying out successful trials but discussions are still continuing on exact details.

QUEENS Park Rangers’ spectacular promotion has thrown the Premier League’s ﬁxture computer into a spin. It has been a relatively simple job of alternating Fulham and Chelsea ﬁxtures, so that as far as possible the clubs haven’t had home ties on the same weekend. But now Hammersmith &

Fulham has become the only local authority in the country with three top-ﬂight teams, life is a little more complicated. The football authorities have to juggle the ﬁxture list so rival away teams aren’t travelling into the area at the same time. Just imagine. Chelsea v Liverpool, Fulham v Manchester United and QPR v Manchester City on the same day. “Chelsea and Fulham will NEVER play on the same day at the same time,” insisted a Hammersmith & Fulham Council spokesman. “However, Queens Park Rangers and Fulham will continue to be ‘paired’.” It means the Whites and the Hoops can continue (as at present) having matches on the same day, but Chelsea and Fulham will always be kept apart. The reason? The dear old District line. “It just can’t cope with the fans from the two clubs at the same

time,” said the council spokesman, hastily adding that it wasn’t because of any fear of trouble. One of the main pinch points is the section between Wimbledon and Fulham Broadway. The problem is always the away fans. Were Everton and Liverpool supporters to be making identical journeys to watch their teams play the Whites and the Blues, it would be a policing nightmare. Similarly if Manchester United and Manchester City happened to be playing in west London on the same day… or Newcastle and Sunderland, and so on. The moment Rangers’promotion was confirmed, the Met Police football planners and hooligan intelligence experts began meeting to discuss the implications. On paper, there shouldn’t be too much to worry about. Numbers attending matches will increase, but not seriously. After all, the Hoops had virtually full houses for their last few games in the Championship. But, as Hoops fans already having to cope with a serious hike in season tickets are discovering, life in the top division has its differences. A police insider told Your Fulham that Premier League fans tend to travel to matches with fewer problems than Championship fans because the level of policing is better. The Met Police have to keep a continuous watch on fixtures because of the added complication of cup games. It’s an issue that extends to Europe. With Chelsea in the Champions League and Fulham in the Europa League, there is also an international dimension. The fixture list is published next week, but there is then another two and a half weeks of hanging around until Sky picks its games for live transmission in the first half of the 2011-12 season. The police have input in the selection of kick-off times, to avoid the risk of rival supporters clashing. The trickiest fixtures the police are expecting are, oddly enough, Swansea’s visits to Loftus Road, Craven Cottage and Stamford Bridge.

TENNIS STAR GREG OPENS NEW SW6 COURTS FORMER British number one tennis player Greg Rusedski officially opened the new tennis courts at Bishop’s Park. The new facilities include 12 refurbished courts and four mini courts built specially for children. Five of the full-size courts are floodlit, meaning they can remain open until 8pm in winter instead of 4pm. The total cost of the redevelopment is £378,000. Hammersmith & Fulham Council provided £208,000 with £150,000 coming from the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA), and support from Sport England, while £20,000 came from The Queen’s Club in West Kensington. Cllr Greg Smith, cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “Tennis is one of the most popular sports in Hammersmith & Fulham and we are delighted that these courts are now officially open. “The courts are already very well-used and we hope that we may be able to unearth the next Andy Murray here in the heart of Fulham. “There are so many wonderful sporting facilities in the borough and we are thrilled that we can now add these new tennis courts to that list. I would like to extend my gratitude to the Lawn Tennis Association and Queen’s Club for helping us to deliver this project.” There are plans to develop Bishops Park as a Beacon site, providing an element of free and affordable tennis.
