Summer Reading Challenge Ages 4-11 For this year’s Summer Reading Challenge we’re off to Beanotown, where rumour has it there’s a treasure chest full of epic pranks waiting to be discovered… Join the challenge at your local library! Most challenges begin on Saturday 14 July when you can say hello to Pieface, Rubi, JJ, Gnasher, and the ultimate mischief maker: Dennis! The Summer Reading Challenge is fun, free and designed for all children, whatever their reading ability. And in this year’s challenge you can help the Mischief Makers find the box of tricks.

Taking part in the challenge helps children to improve their reading skills and confidence during the holidays. Children can read whatever they like for the challenge — fact books, joke books, picture books, audio books or you can download a book — as long as they’re borrowed from the library!

Booking is required for some events. Check with your local library. Contact details at www.lbhf.gov.uk/libraries or visit: www.mischief-makers.org.uk for more details

Introducin g Family Support

We’re here to help families in Hammersmith & Fulham thrive.  And our family centres are on hand so mums, dads, carers and children can make new friends and enjoy play and learning experiences together. Loving, positive and nurturing relationships help children and young people develop the healthy brains they need for future life challenges.

Summer in the city 2018

Our family centres Our centres offer a range of experiences for families with children. These include stay and play sessions, baby massage, health visitor clinics, English language classes, sleep workshops and much more. For older children and young people we offer access to youth provision. We are also here to support young carers and families who have special educational needs and disabilities.

Here for families Having children can be great fun but sometimes things can get hard and we are here for worries both big and small. It could be dealing with problems at home with drugs or substance abuse, struggling to cope or feeling low. Perhaps you have housing problems or need help keeping the kids active or eating well? We’re here to provide quick and easy access to support and advice. Get in touch Pop into one of our family centres, phone 020 8753 6070 or email contact@family-support. org.uk For more information, visit www.family-support.org.uk

Baby massage: the im portance of touch Touch is the first of the five senses to develop and early touch can impact how your baby’s brain develops and how they process the world around them.

Summer in the city 2018

Benefits of baby massage Massage helps to soothe your baby, promoting restful sleep.  Research shows that other benefits include improving weight gain, aiding digestion, improving circulation and easing teething pain.  Family Support’s baby massage guru, Ann Parry, says:  “Baby massage benefits both parent and baby; it allows an uninterrupted time for bonding and for learning more about a baby’s ways of communicating before they are ready to talk.”  Come along to Fulham Central, Cathnor or Melcombe Family Centres and spend some bonding time with your baby!

Play is children’s work Playing isn’t just fun,  it’s also the best way for young children to learn. To promote healthy brain development, children need time and attention from someone who’s happy to play with them. These positive, nurturing interactions are known as ‘serve and return’. In other words, when an infant or young child babbles, gestures, or cries, and an adult responds appropriately with eye contact, words, or a hug, connections are built in a child’s brain that support the development of communication and social skills. Come and join us at one of our Learn and Play sessions on pages 27 to 30.
