Shops, restaurants and bars have made SW6 a sought-after postcode

O

h, Fulham. How you have changed! Growing up in humble Hamble Street and donning my Langford Primary uniform I would never have guessed that I was living in what was to become one of London’s premier postcodes. But SW6 has indeed surprised us all and the past few years have seen an explosion of fancy shops, restaurants and bars that would make most other areas of the capital blush with envy. Hearing from Fulham Broadway manager Gary Blackledge that every year more than 12 million people pass through the shopping centre is testament to our new-found appeal. And long may it continue. Despite the recession affecting all parts of London, it is encouraging to see new businesses choosing Fulham and opening their doors for business. Whether this is the long-serving family-run ventures such as Turkish restaurants Best Mangal and much-loved pet shop The Fish Bowl, or newcomers such as the java lovers at The Coffee Machine and plonk emporium Vagabond Wines. All of these shops are run by loyal Fulhamites new and old and need your support. And in order to drum up a bit of love for our SW6 businesses, an exciting new competition called ‘Odd Man Out’ will be launched in Fulham Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road for two weeks. The challenge will be to find the random item placed in the window of participating retailers. So if you spot a rocketship in the chemist’s or a stiletto in the butcher’s window you could win a prize by filling out the I Love Fulham form. Answer forms and a list of participating businesses will be available in early November from: www.lbhf.gov.uk/news Meanwhile, on November 26, the Christmas lights will be switched on at Fulham Broadway by a few showbiz special guests – and maybe a Chelsea FC player or two. A few days later on December 3, the Christmas party moves to Fulham Island at Jerdan Place for the annual fair and Santa’s grotto. It’s not to be missed. But if you can’t wait until December for a Fulham celebration, the explosions will be in Bishop’s Park as the annual Guy Fawkes celebration is launched. This year’s musical firework spectacular on November 5 has a ‘superhero’ theme and organisers are encouraging any budding Spider-Men, Supermen and Batmen to dress up and join in the fun. One lucky child will be chosen from the crowd to help count down and lift off the main fireworks display! Now sit back and read about all of the impressive places to shop, eat and drink in our lovely – and increasingly popular – neighbourhood of Fulham.

SHOP>> THE SUPER FISH BOWL STILL BEST FOR ALL YOUR PET PROJECTS

IF YOU have bought a pet or looked after one in Fulham in the last 40 years, the chances are you’ll have set foot inside The Fish Bowl in Dawes Road. The popular shop, which has been trading for 47 years, has been under the dutiful watch of owner Peter Johnson (pictured left) from the day it opened and he is certain that owning a pet remains an important experience. “I think most people like to have a pet in their home,” said Peter, 67. Parents hoping to ground their kids in the basics of

animal care are spoilt for choice once they step inside The Fish Bowl. The tanks of goldfish in the basement floor will be the most likely source of a starter pet for any family, though more adventurous buyers may gravitate towards the reptile tanks containing corn snakes, leopard geckos, tortoises and chameleons. Alongside the goldfish, the colourful neon tetra fish are also popular, according to Peter, as well as guppies, a form of livebearer fish, while upstairs, wife Jennifer looks after the

shop’s selection of chinchillas, hamsters, budgies, canaries and finches. “We hope that people keep coming back because of the service we give and the sensible prices,” Peter said. “I have a good knowledge of the subject and all our five staff can help buyers when they ask for advice.” Peter should know his tetras from rainbow fish, as he started out with his own collection of tropical fish before opening the shop, aged just 22.  The Fish Bowl is located at 133-135 Dawes Road, Fulham.

FULHAM’S newest wine shop promises to take the guesswork out of finding a top drop with 100 table wines available for tasting. Vagabond Wines, the brainchild of ex-New Yorker Stephen Finch, opened on September 17 in Vanston Place near Fulham Broadway, replacing former clothing store Urban Tribes. Stephen, 35, once a management consultant, hopes to revolutionise the way customers choose wines, grouping them by taste rather than region and offering each white, red and rose for sampling in hi-tech dispensing machines. He told h&f news: “I came over here in 2003 for graduate studies and was disappointed with the selection of wine shops in London; I expected better so close to Europe. Tasting the “There is a prevalence wine is of wine chains like Threshers and Oddbins, and the essential; supermarkets have a huge market share, but so much it’s the of what they do is massway of produced. Stephen Finch in Vagabond Wines, where dispensers line the walls shops around Fulham Broadway, he couldn’t believe his luck. “I looked everywhere for a year and did not think this kind of geographic gap existed,” he said. “I really like Fulham and a lot of people round here are willing to spend a certain amount on wine if they really like it. “I love this location – we’ve got Del Aziz, Al Santo and The Malt

House pub on this corner. I want to talk through ideas with the other businesses and hopefully make it a foodie destination.” While other wine shops in Fulham also try-before-you-buy, Stephen believes the sheer number of wines at Vagabond makes it unique. “Tasting is essential, and I’m convinced that’s the way of the future,” he said. Customers can sample any of Vagabond’s 100 wines for 50p each, regardless of value of the wine. Once opened, each bottle can be stored for up to three weeks in the custom-made dispensing units, which

pump nitrogen into the bottles to stop the wines oxidising. “It wasn’t cheap to set up, and that’s why you don’t see more of this, but it’s working well,” Stephen said. “People will come in and taste the expensive stuff out of curiosity, but they spend most of their time in the wine range they can afford. Vagabond Wines offers free delivery in Fulham and does wine tasting events. “Our first was a beginners’ guide on October 12 and it sold out within three hours,” Stephen said.  Vagabond Wines is located at 18 Vanston Place. WRITE-ON NOMAD BOOKS GOES CLUBBING FULHAM’S favourite bookshop is starting a new chapter in its 20-year success story by launching two book clubs and a slick website. Nomad Books is celebrating its 20th anniversary of page-turning pleasure in Fulham Road by adding a poetry club and junior book club to its already hugely popular monthly modern fiction club and bi-monthly classics club. The shop manager, Andrew Turton (pictured above), 47, says Nomad’s book clubs have become something of an institution around Fulham and he is confident the new additions will prove equally successful. “I think we are quite lucky. A good case could be made for the Fulham Broadway centre being at the heart of Fulham life, at least when it comes to shopping, eating out or enjoying yourself. Gary Blackledge, 30, who has worked in the centre since 2002 before being promoted to the position of centre manager last summer, is the man charged with ensuring it keeps ticking over like clockwork, whether it be working with Chelsea FC on a matchday or making sure its varied businesses, from

A bank with a difference... it actually listens to customers! A NEW bank will take on the big boys of banking in a showdown at the heart of Fulham Broadway. Metro Bank opened on Friday, taking the place of the failed Borders bookstore which closed its doors in December. The bank has opened just two doors away from rival Halifax, which itself was on the brink of collapse before Lloyds TSB stepped in to rescue it.

Metro Bank is the brainchild of veteran American banker Vernon Hill, who made his name at US bank Commerce Bancorp, which was known for attracting customers through quality service, rather than interest rates. The Fulham branch is one of a handful of Metro Bank sites, and the bank hopes to expand to a network of 200 in London in the future. On opening day, Metro Bank chief executive Craig Donaldson

said: “Banks have forgotten their customers. And we want to return to traditional banking while adjusting to fit today’s world. For instance, why are banks shut on bank holidays?” Unusually for a high street bank, the Fulham branch – now only the third in Britain – is open seven days a week (8am-8pm Monday to Friday, 8am-6pm Saturday, 10am4pm Sunday and bank holidays) and 361 days of the year.

WEDDING DAYS FULHAM PALACE

When style gurus marry, they pick the palace as the dream backdrop with its old-world charm and beautiful settings, the borough’s loveliest setting is for hire to all discerning brides, Writes Jon Weisgard “We wanted a venue that beautiful inside and out – Fulham Palace fitted the perfectly. That’s the word from

country’s leading wedding journalist, who has singled out Fulham Palace for praise after holding her own wedding at the historic riverside building. Victoria Sullivan, style editor of Wedding magazine married her sweetheart Ian Samuel in May and celebrated with a marquee reception at Fulham Palace. The wedding is now featured in all of its glory in a six-page colour

spread in the current edition of Wedding magazine. Victoria said: “As a style editor on Wedding magazine, styling shoots in beautiful locations is part of my job and Fulham Palace, with its Georgian architecture, has always been one of my favourite London venues. “London wedding venues with picturesque gardens are a rarity, and this is what makes Fulham Palace so special. “Its courtyard, complete with

working fountain, makes a fantastic entrance and the gardens at the back of the palace make the perfect backdrop for photographs, particularly in springtime when the wisteria is in full bloom. “Once you’re inside the palace grounds it’s like you’ve stepped into another world, it’s so quiet and tranquil – you’d never know you were in London! “We wanted to make full use of all CONTINUED ON PAGES 12&13>>

MY BIG FAT FULHAM PALACE WEDDING the rooms and gardens the palace had to offer, so we made sure each served a purpose. “We had welcome drinks and canapes in the stunning courtyard followed by a delicious wedding breakfast for 120 guests in the marquee, then finished with after-dinner coffees served in the chaplain’s garden. “After the speeches our guests were invited to dance in the great hall, which was transformed into a night club. “The elegant drawing room featured a stylish bar where guests could sip cocktails while sampling the delights of the ‘cheese shed’ deli-style cheese table. “And the dining room featured cosy chesterfields where guests could chill out while taking a tasty treat from the sugar-filled dessert table.” While most other popular wedding locations have noticed a distinct downturn in trade recently, business has never been so good at the palace. When Fulham Palace reopened to the public in 2007, it hosted 60 weddings a year. That number has now shot up to 90 a year, with the palace and its many beautiful rooms booked up months in advance. Cllr Greg Smith, H&F cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “The picturesque Fulham Palace is, quite simply, a magical venue for weddings and I am delighted that Victoria enjoyed such a memorable day. “The site provides a wealth of fabulous locations for your photographs, both within the palace and across its fine, botanic gardens.” A number of rooms, of varying sizes, are licensed for weddings and civil partnerships and the palace is also open on Sundays. With its grand Steinway piano the great hall is a wonderful space for cocktail receptions, dinner or dancing and can cater for 100 people. Bishop Terrick’s drawing room houses is ideal for smaller wedding ceremonies. Alternatively, the chaplain’s garden marquee is a stunning outdoor venue. The palace is also becoming a popular venue for the corporate market, accommodating meetings, conferences or corporate hospitality events throughout the year. Work will soon commence on restoring the palace’s grounds. The walled garden and vinery will be restored and the stables turned into an education centre. The Fulham Palace moat, thought to be the longest medieval moat England, will be partially excavated at the Gothic Lodge – which will also be repaired.

The council also plans to restore the Tudor wing of the building to establish far greater public access to the palace. Also on the table are plans to increase dramatically the museum space available in order to create an exciting and interactive learning experience to convey the history of the palace.  If you are interested in getting married at Fulham Palace call the hospitality manager on 020 7610 7162 or email: functions@fulhampalace. org.uk.  To see more pictures of Ian and Victoria’s Fulham Palace wedding, see the current issue of Wedding magazine (inset) now on sale or see the November edition of Wedding Flowers magazine.

You don’t get me, I’m part of the Union Market hall! IT USED TO HOUSE THE FULHAM BROADWAY TUBE TICKET OFFICE BUT NOW THE UNION MARKET IS A CHARACTERFUL, INVITING AND CHARMING FOODIE PARADISE, WRITES CAROLINE BUTCHER FULHAM foodies can ‘have their cake and eat it too’ with the opening of a new food haven where farmers’ market quality meets modern supermarket convenience. Self-confessed food lover and organic farmer Tony Bromovsky, 60, struck on the idea of combining the best aspects of the two shopping experiences two years ago in conversation with a group of colleagues. “We all thought there was a gap between the farmers’ markets we all love – which can be a bit expensive but rather fun with lots of theatre – and the highly efficient, reliable and consistent supermarkets,” he said. The newly opened Union Market, in Fulham Road, is an attempt to bridge that gap. The beautifully renovated store – which Tony hopes will be the first of many branches around London – opened in July beside Fulham Broadway shopping centre, formerly the site of TGI Friday’s. The shop mixes the long opening hours, affordability and the consistency of a regular grocery store with the high-quality, ethically produced British food normally associated with a farmers’ market. “Eighty per cent of what we stock is British food, but we had to import a few things like olives, parmesan and wine,” Tony said. “We are smaller, slower and greener than many industrial food retailers, and the point about being smaller is that you can buy from small farmers. “We are also very much about affordability – we’re keen not to be seen as exclusive or expensive – and we’ve benchmarked all our prices to standard high street supermarkets.”

Your Fulham PAGE 15 union market.indd 1

Tony Bromovsky stands in the renovated market hall. Top, more views of the space at 472 Fulham Road But Tony has certainly spared no expense on the lavish £1million refurbishment of the site, retaining period details from the old Fulham Broadway tube station while making a new feature of the building’s stunning glass roof. “We’ve kept the listed features like the original ticket counters and individual shop fronts, but one of the best features of this building is its double height and glass roof,” he said. The vast new store includes a huge range of specialist counters including bakery and tea and coffee sections which open at 7am on weekdays for the breakfast rush – an hour earlier than the rest of the store. Also inside is a greengrocer, dairy counter, salad bar, delicatessen and grocery store, and alongside the old ticket counters

is an in-store restaurant. “We have three chefs and we do lovely traditional English cooking as well as dishes from around the world,” he said. “We also have regular cookery lessons and demonstrations.” Towards the back of the store is a meat and poultry counter,

well-stocked with British ethically reared meat, as well as a cheese room with 30 kinds of British cheese and a wide selection of wines, beers, ciders and spirits at the back of the shop. The father-of-four is also keen to get involved in the Fulham community and has launched a seed-growing project with Fulham Primary School. “We’re teaching the children how things grow,” he said. Tony has also boosted the store’s green credentials by investing in an emission-free electric car, offering free customer deliveries within a one-mile radius.  Union Market is located at 472 Fulham Road. Open Monday to Saturday 8am-8pm, Sundays noon6pm (coffee and bakery sections are open from 7am on weekdays).

Michele Leone, 35, manager of the store, has worked for the company for seven years, and was really excited about the opening of the store in Fulham in September. He said: “We are pleased to have opened the outlet here as Fulham is a very prestigious area of London.” All the goods are produced in Matera, southern Italy, under the artistic guidance of Saverio Calia, son of the founder, Liborio Vincenzo Calia, who started the busiEach of ness back in 1965. Sit back and enjoy the sensation of an Italian sofa. Inset below, Michele Leone at Calia Italia in New Kings Road This flexibility is extended to the choice of leathers, too. Calia Italia specialises in high-quality leather that ranges from natural to protected specimens. These cover alterations can give the furniture a comforting, soft feel to a super-soft sensation. Another stand-out feature to the line is the mechanised mastery that has gone into some of the collection. Discretely placed sensors allow you to alter the composition of the sofa, taking you from an upright

position into a slumber-like state in a matter of seconds. Other form-changing features include the reclining head rests and movable sofa pieces. The tailor-made products are moulded to the client’s vision of how they want their living room to look and feel. It usually takes up to eight weeks from the time of order before you can

enjoy the slick, Italian, leather masterpiece in the comfort of your living room. The store caters to all facets of the market, from the young to the very old. Families will also be pleased to hear of some of the purposely fabricated sofas that can withstand the inevitable spillages that come with young children around. Michele believes this plethora of choice alongside their value for money helps them stand out from their competition. He added: “Each of our sofas has its own character which we are extremely proud of and helps to uphold our reputation.”  Calia Italia is located at 100 New Kings Road, Fulham. Buono appetito! This family deli is just full of temptation EMILIA’S IS A SEVEN-DAY-AWEEK HAVEN OF FINE FOOD, WITH SPECIALISED GOODIES PILED HIGH ON THE SHELVES AND IN THE CHILLED CABINETS, LEARNS ALISTAIR KLEEBAUER THERE is really no need to take a shopping list when visiting Emilia’s Delicatessen in New Kings Road. The lively, family-run deli is so packed with Italian treats of all kinds, including hams, cheese and cakes, that you won’t be short of inspiration and temptation. You’re also guaranteed a friendly smile and shopping and cooking tips from couple Jose and Anna Gouveia, who, despite being Portuguese, could write an encyclopaedia on Italian food. “You have to love what you do,” says Jose, 55, who opened the popular shop with his wife eight years ago. “Every day I get up and I want to come to work. My social life is at work, I talk to people every day and you create a bond. We don’t just talk about food,” he says and he has the advantage of speaking English, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian in order to converse with his loyal clientele. From their famous pasteis de nata cakes, originally created by Lisbon monks before the 18th century, to their fresh buffalo mozzarella, which arrives twice weekly, and the bresaola, a salted beef from the Italian Alps, you will forget you are in Fulham once you step inside. The couple, who live in Croydon, also have enough enthusiasm for

food to make Jamie Oliver appear slightly jaded. “The most important thing is service to the customers and having a smile,” says Jose. “We always want to make the shop look lively as well. It’s a shame we don’t have more space as we could fit in much more. We could display many more cheeses for example.” That space quickly fills up come lunchtime when office workers from nearby ponder over a range of fresh sand-

wiches and pastas, while the shop also provides party catering, all from Anna’s own home cooking and recipes. “All of our produce is from Italy – well, 99 per cent of it,” says Jose. “We also get small companies in Italy who seek us out as we can sell their goods in London, like some of the small olive oil producers we deal with. They press their olives within 24 hours of harvesting them.” “We also have a prime location,” adds Anna, 50. “It’s a very friendly area here but people come from all over London to shop here.” As famous a food-lover as Loyd Grossman is a self-proclaimed fan, his picture adorning the front door cut from an article in which he picks

Emilia’s as his secret London treat. Not that it’s likely to remain a secret for too long. After moving to London in 1972, Jose worked in restaurants and hotels, including the Dorchester, where he worked with many Italians and learned from the mixed cuisine on offer. He then took his burgeoning knowledge of Italian food to work in other delis in the area, but admitted he much preferred being his own boss. He and Anna also manage to keep the shop open seven days a week, only closing on Christmas Day, New Year’s Day and Easter Sunday. After a brief chat with both, you get the impression they’d open then as well if they were allowed to.  Emilia’s Deli is at 88 New Kings Road. Call 020 7751 0189.

Nar Bar and Grill offers a range of grilled delights, meze snacks and a wide selection of wines, spirits and cocktails. The venue, which is open until midnight seven days a week, is the first restaurant venture for youthful couple Sami and Theo Awda, who both previously worked in property. Sami, 26, said: “Setting up a restaurant is very new to us but it’s something we love.” Theo, 25, admitted that opening a new business during a recession had been a huge gamble, but said it was all part of the challenge. “It is daunting but we think it can only get better – it’s scary but it’s also exciting,” she said Andre Delanchy serves the racks of oak-smoked ribs at Bodean’s, a temple to the best cuts of meat PICTURES BY LEIGH QUINNELL (Sami and Theo pictured above). EAT>> A DECADE AFTER OPENING THEIR FIRST RESTAURANT, THE BARRIONUEVOS HAVE ARRIVED IN FULHAM, WHERE THEY SERVE THE BEST STEAK EVER... OR SO AMIE KEELEY FIRMLY BELIEVES THIS summer husband-and-wife restaurant owners Christian and Linda Barrionuevo opened the Buenos Aires Argentine Steakhouse in Fulham. And we should be very grateful they chose this part of London to offer what is probably the best steak I have ever tasted. Having gained valuable experience in the restaurant business while working at El Gaucho in Chelsea, where the couple met in 2000, they decided to make the bold move and set up their own steakhouse in Purley, south London, where they live. Now, 10 years on, they have opened their fourth Buenos Aires restaurant in Fulham Palace Road. During the evening it became easy to see why it was nominated by the Argentinean Tourism Office to be part of a few selected Argentine restaurants representing the country’s best steakhouses around the world. My friend and I were greeted by friendly Argentine waiters whose helpful recommendations meant that we were relieved of the difficult task of choosing from such a mouth-watering menu. To start, sources its wine from Hispamerchants, we had empanadas – a stuffed pastry a wine merchant based in Shepherds – one beef and one mozzarella and Bush who supply it with the delicious spinach. There were some lamb and chicken dishes which I’m sure would have gone down well, and there is a decent choice of Spanish tapas plates which would make great starters. One word of warning – we ordered our beef medium-rare and perhaps to a lot of people’s standards this would be considered pretty rare, so I would recommend explaining exactly how you want it cooked. Obviously, it isn’t a restaurant

EAT>> IN SIX YEARS OF SERVING UP FINE ITALIAN FOOD, NUOVI SAPORI HAS WON SEVERAL SIGNIFICANT AWARDS. ALISTAIR KLEEBAUER WENT ALONG TO FIND OUT WHY GETTING a restaurant off the ground is not easy. Keeping it open is harder. Sergio Rodrigues and his partner Carlo Petitto clearly know something most people don’t though, then, as they’ve been the force behind the Nuovi Sapori restaurant in New Kings Road since it opened in 2004. Together they’ve built up its clientele to the extent that the restaurant is consistently ranked as one of the best Italians in Fulham by online guide Toptable and, and it has also been awarded a Remy-Harden Guide award. “We have a friendly atmosphere so people keep coming back,” says Sergio, 40. “Our location is very good too because people in Fulham like to go out and eat, t h e y unders t a n d about food and they appreciate good Italian food.

IN AN ATTEMPT to improve its image, Havanas in Fulham has launched a brand new menu to show it’s not just a late-night favourite hang-out at the weekend. And there’s plenty to choose from with familiar tapas dishes including squid and chorizo and main dishes such as quesadillas and fajitas. But the first thing that becomes apparent is that, for a Cuban bar, there is no Cuban food on offer. Cuba, you see, is not really renowned for its cuisine. Indeed, much of the Cuban population still lives on rationed meat and scarcely use any types of flavourings in their meals. After travelling around the island for three weeks a couple of years ago, eating only plain white fish and

So when I arrived at Havanas I was actually quite relieved when I saw a menu full of Mexican and Spanish dishes with a burger and risotto thrown in. Yes, this menu certainly can’t decide whether it’s Spanish, Mexican or British fusion and seems to have been designed to cater for every eventuality, with no clear winner. You wonder whether any menu offering such an eclectic mix of foods can do each dish justice but the Mexican meals were definitely well rehearsed, as I’d hoped. WHETHER you’re a notebookscribbling beer geek or just there for the Aussie speed-dating and didgeridoo, one Fulham drinking spot believes there is a beer to suit everyone’s palate. STEPPING into The Bedford Arms for an after-work pint, you wouldn’t know that within the last year this popular pub had been really struggling. Bedecked in football scarves and mementoes, and with a packed and lively bar, it’s surprising to learn from pub manager Brian O’Rourke that the Dawes Road establishment was nearly on its last legs. After a recent refurbishment, along with the success of the borough’s two Premiership teams, there are rarely sleepy nights anymore, however. “It had got a bit dilapidated,” said Brian, 35, who began working there about one year ago. “It was very tired and not trading very well. I For the think the beautiful refurmarket bishment has helped. It’s the first refurbishment I’ve we’re trying seen where they’ve kept it as a pub as well, without to attract, turning it into anything that it’s a good it wasn’t originally.” The pub’s owners have location also made a conscious decision to try to reconnect with its traditional clientele, a mixture of English and Irish workers from the surrounding : area. “For the market CLICK O.N we’re trying to attract, w w w e this is a good location,” beerinth . said Brian. evening A bonus, though, has com

been the speed with which neighbouring football supporters have also returned to the pub, particularly Chelsea fans buoyed by their team’s successful few seasons and Fulham fans who looked for somewhere to celebrate their past European adventures. “Not only did we get the local community coming back in, which for some is the fourth gen-

eration, except the last generation isn’t drinking of course, but the number of football fans has been a big bonus,” said Brian. On the night of Fulham’s narrow defeat in the Europa League final, the pub was buzzing with those regulars who hadn’t headed to watch the game live in Germany. “I’m a Fulham fan now, I’m totally converted,” said Brian. “We even had a big ‘coming home’ party for all the supporters who went out to Germany.” “We did have Chelsea flags

all around as well,” added regular Matthew Volpe, 50, of Mablethorpe Road, about the diplomatically absent memorabilia. “We’ve watched the whole run for Fulham in here over the last 10 months,” said his friend, Mark Adams, 52, of Fulham Palace Road. The pub now has plans for student promotions and possibly to add a kitchen so it can extend the range of food on offer, which is limited now to bar snacks and pies.  The Bedford Arms is located at 204 Dawes Road, Fulham.

Exploring ways of making Fulham riverside better still THE THAMES RIVER WALK HAS ALREADY BEEN EXTENDED AND IMPROVED, BUT HAS MORE POTENTIAL IF WORK IS DONE IN HARMONY WITH LANDOWNERS, WRITES DELYTH BOWEN

RESIDENTS in Fulham are being asked to share their views on plans to improve the borough’s stretch of the Thames river path. Hammersmith & Fulham Council chiefs have been working with residents for the past three years to make the riverside walk, which covers five miles of land on the banks of the Thames, more accessible to pedestrians and cyclists. Having listened to them, the council has now set out plans on how it intends to improve the river path in the future, as part of a new report. The Riverside Walk Enhancement Report, which has just been published, includes opening up sections of the walk that, until now, have not been available to the public, looking after the river’s nature and wildlife, and cracking down on antisocial behaviour. Nicholas Botterill, deputy leader of H&F Council and cabinet member for environment, said: “This project is the result of hard work between the council and residents to link up with riparian landowners and bring our stretch of the Thames path back its former glory. “We want to make it as tidy, inviting and safe as possible to encourage more people to use it as an alternative route to get to work or just to have a nice stroll at the weekend.“ There have already been some great improvements to the riverside, which covers six conservation areas. The council this summer created a shared path in the Upper Mall area in Hammersmith, where cyclists and pedestrians can enjoy the river using the same pathway. This followed the successes of the same schemes in Furnivall Gardens in 2005 and more recently Adam’s Walk near the Crabtree pub and Beckett’s Wharf near Hammersmith Bridge in 2008. Council workers have also improved the biodiversity of the riverbank by cutting back overgrown weeds and hedges, replacing them instead with native aquatic plants. There have even been changes to the lampposts, which ‘fold down’, so that council workers can change the light bulbs by hand rather than shelling out money on bringing in machinery and cherry-picker trucks every time a light goes out. The council has also made the

involved authorities such as English Heritage, the Port of London Authority and the Environment Agency, outlines plans and suggestions to enhance the river walk, and discusses local landmarks, the heritage of the river and biodiversity, and offers design and planning guidance. One of the next major schemes will be in the Swanbank area near Putney Bridge, where residents have raised concerns about antisocial behaviour. At a meeting with the council this summer, residents offered ideas on how to improve the area, including the possibility of transforming the area into a public space where residents could relax, a place where a market could be held or where community events could take place. Residents will be asked for their views on what they would like to see in the area as part of a six-week consultation set to begin in December. Works are then likely to start in the new year and the project is planned for completion by March 2011.  Improvements to the Thames Path are continuing, so if you have any suggestions for possible works or would like more information call Annelise Johns in the highways department on 020 8753 3005 or email: Annelise.Johns@lbhf.gov.uk

Anyone for tennis? Life will be a beach in Bishop’s Park The famous Fulham Palace grounds, including the walled garden, will also be restored and the vinery and the stables will be turned into an education centre. Greg Smith, H&F cabinet member for residents’ services, said: “Both Bishop’s Park and Fulham Palace grounds are of huge historic importance to the borough and these exciting improvements will see them reaffirmed as the jewels in our local crown.” Meanwhile, the council will also be spending £378,000 to renovate the existing tennis courts to provide 12 new full-size adult courts and four junior courts. Some sections will be floodlit so the courts can open until 8pm in winter instead of having to close at 4pm. Work on the courts will be phased so that some tennis will be available during construction. Work to upgrade courts seven to 15, and install floodlights, started on

WITH MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS TO TENNIS COURTS AND AN URBAN BEACH RESTORED TO FORMER GLORY, THERE ARE EXCITING TIMES AHEAD FOR BISHOP’S PARK, WRITES JON WEISGARD FULHAM’S Bishop’s Park is set for a radical transformation, starting this month. Work to replace worn-out tennis courts began in September while a renovation of the park itself, together with the creation of an urban beach, started last week (October 11). In Edwardian times, families from across the capital descended on Bishop’s Park’s very own beach, known as ‘Margate Sands’. And the council wants to recreate that special seaside atmosphere. The beach plans are part of an £8million project to improve Bishop’s Park and the adjoining grounds of Fulham Palace. The council has received £3.65m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help pay for the project. As well as the urban beach, the council will be restoring the ornamental lake and picturesque bridge. Three major play areas will also be created and the cafe will be upgraded.
