A Carnival of Colour out

ASPEXPERT HAIRCARE HOSTS A HIGH-OCTANE GLOBAL HAIR EXTRAVAGANZA

500 guests from around the world gathered in Marbella, Spain, recently, to attend a two-day hair carnival celebrating 30 years of ASP. Brand distributors and hairdressers from a host of countries including Holland, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, USA and Canada, participated in the spectacular event which took over Marbella’s exclusive Hard Rock Hotel for its celebrations.

The salon-exclusive brand showed its support for the professional hairdresser with an exciting line-up of hair shows and seminars throughout the event. The message was very clear that guests needed to ‘be inspired and get creative’.

ASP’s Education Manager & Head of Creative, Sara Solomon-Jones, along with Sales & Commercial Director, Ross Jones, opened the event by revealing the new products that will be launching in the ASP portfolio in 2025, and paid tribute to the company’s 30-year heritage. “Throughout the last 30 years, we have launched some of the most innovative products in the market. We’re now in more than 50 countries and trusted by thousands of hair professionals around the world. Today is the launchpad of the next era of ASP. Our ethos remains the same, the hair professionals are always at the core of our business, and the professional hairdresser makes us who we are,”

Tracey Ann Smith & The ASP Colour Rebels

An incredible ‘90s neon’ themed opening party set the scene for the event, with live music, entertainers and hairdressers from all over the globe embracing the spectacular carnival. However, it was the fantastic hair show that truly took the energy to the next level. Headed up by ASP’s Global Ambassador, Tracey Ann Smith, and the ASP Colour Rebels, the energetic show embraced the neon theme with an array of avant garde hair that was bursting with creativity and skill.

The ASP Colour Rebels are halfway through a two-year programme, which has already involved an intensive period of education and development with Tracey Ann Smith and the ASP education team, before being catapulted into the limelight on the global stage. Maisie Oddy, Poppy Goodwin, Megan Grant, Morgan Workman and Maire Abbett demonstrated exceptional skills and presented their first global hair show with finesse and talent, in what was a mesmerising show.

Day two of the ASP Carnival was filled with masterclasses that gave guests an exceptional up-close and personal education opportunity. ASP Ambassadors, Terri Nadin and Let Lew, took to the stage with a Colour Masterclass, whilst Paul Thomas-Farr and Jon Aherne delivered the Cutting Masterclass. ASP Ambassador, Sheree Tomić, and renowned photographer, Desmond Murray, closed the day with the Photography and Social Media Masterclass.

The final night was truly a carnival themed spectacle, with guests embracing the carnival dress code as they enjoyed a cocktail reception, followed by a delicious four course sit-down meal. The night culminated in a hair show extravaganza created by Tracey Ann Smith and the ASP Colour Rebels and Ambassadors. A colourful line-up of models with incredible carnival-inspired hair demonstrated the array of talent amongst the team. The energy was electric; it was fun, fabulous and inspired. An energetic carnival party followed when the 500 guests joined together to celebrate three remarkable decades of ASP.

WE ARE CATCHING UP WITH ALL OF OUR WINNERS FROM THE FIRST-EVER PRO HAIR AWARDS. SAY HELLO TO OUR NEXT TWO…

PROFESSIONAL SUSTAINABLE SALON OF THE YEAR 2024: BUTCHERS SALON SPONSORED BY

Butchers Salon was founded in 2014 by myself, Susannah, and my business partner, Katie, with a vision to create a salon experience that prioritises both high-end hairdressing and sustainability. Over the years, we’ve grown into one of the UK’s leading eco-conscious salon brands, now with three locations in Shoreditch, Leicester and Chester.

Sustainability has been at our core from the very beginning, from using vegan, naturally derived products to implementing waste-reducing initiatives and running our salons on renewable energy. Our dedication to ethical hairdressing has earned us multiple industry awards, and we’re proud to set a standard for how salons can operate in a more responsible way. Beyond hair, we’re passionate about education, community and wellbeing, inspiring both our team and the wider industry to embrace greener practices.

What made you want to enter the first-ever Pro Hair Awards?

Sustainability is at the core of everything we do, and we felt this award was the perfect platform to showcase the work we’ve put into making our salon as eco-friendly as possible. The Pro Hair Awards are a fantastic way to highlight the industry leaders pushing boundaries, and we wanted to be part of that movement. Winning would not only recognise our team’s hard work, but also inspire other salons to take steps towards a greener future.

How did you feel when your name was announced as the winner of Professional Sustainable Salon of the Year 2024? It was a surreal and emotional moment! We’ve poured so much passion and effort into making sustainability a non-negotiable part of our business, and to have that recognised on such a prestigious platform was incredible. The whole team was overjoyed, and it felt like a huge step forward – not just for us, but for sustainable hairdressing as a whole.

What was your favourite takeaway from the night?

Aside from the amazing atmosphere and being surrounded by so many talented professionals, our biggest takeaway was seeing how much the industry is evolving. There’s a real movement towards innovation and sustainability, and it was inspiring to witness so many brands and individuals congratulating us on an award that means so much to them. It reinforced our belief that sustainability isn’t just a trend, it’s the future of hairdressing.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to enter the Pro Hair Awards next year?

Go for it! These awards are about recognising the hard work, innovation and passion behind the industry’s best businesses. If you believe in what you do, share your story authentically; show how you’re making an impact, whether that’s through sustainability, creativity or education. And most importantly, be proud of your journey, whether you win or not, entering is an opportunity to reflect on your achievements and push your business even further.

Do you have any exciting plans up your sleeve for the next year?

Absolutely! Sustainability is a constant journey for us, and we’re always looking for ways to push things further. Right now, we’re working towards B Corp certification, ensuring we meet the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility.

Alongside our sustainability efforts, we’re expanding into wellness, integrating Reiki and yoga sessions into our offering for both our team and guests. We believe self-care is holistic, and we want our salons to be a space where people can truly relax, reset and feel their best.

How has winning Professional Sustainable Salon of the Year 2024 impacted your business and your clients?

Winning this award has been an amazing validation of everything we stand for. It’s strengthened our reputation as a leader in sustainable hairdressing and reinforced

the trust our clients have in us. Many have told us how proud they are to support a salon that truly cares about its impact. It’s also opened up new opportunities for collaborations and industry partnerships,

Lastly… where have you put your trophy?!

Our trophy sits proudly on our salon shelf, next to all our gorgeous Aveda products and plants!

I stepped into the salon world of Storm Hair in Southampton after leaving school many moons ago! I then worked as a freelance stylist behind the chair, before deciding to take the leap and concentrate on my passion for bridal hairstyling in 2020. Just when I had set up my home boutique salon, lockdown hit and all my wedding bookings were cancelled! Instead, I set to work building my brand on social media and bonding with the digital styling community around me. I practised constantly on my doll heads, learning to perfect the boho style I am now recognised for.

In 2023 and 2024, I was a winner at the Beyond the Ponytail Styling Awards in America, which opened the exciting new doors of online education to a global audience.

What made you want to enter the first-ever Pro Hair Awards?

I was just so excited to see a bridal hairstyling category! Bridal hairstyling is not always featured in the salon world, so a huge thank you to Pro Hair for giving it the recognition it deserves!

As a hairdresser working behind the chair and also styling for brides, this category combined my love of both worlds. There was no question that I was going to enter! I LOVE a competition; it’s what pushes our creativity and makes us masters of our craft. To receive the recognition for all the hard work you put into your business is just the best feeling in the world.

How did you feel when your name was announced as the winner of Professional Bridal Stylist of the Year 2024?

I went to the awards thinking I was going just to celebrate being a finalist amongst such awesome talent. So when I heard my name, the world stopped! I honestly couldn’t believe it – it’s all a bit of a blur! It’s definitely a moment I keep reliving over and over again, especially when I’m facing a tough day. In that moment, I realised that all my hard work, sacrifices and determination had made my dream a reality. It was honestly just the most incredible feeling.

What was your favourite takeaway from the night? Celebrating with so many incredible stylists was really uplifting. Getting to meet people that I follow on Instagram and sharing the evening with them was just a magical moment.

What advice would you give to anyone wanting to enter the Pro Hair Awards next year?

I now specialise in boho bridal hairstyling, educating stylists through both online and in-person masterclasses, as well as my new venture of

JUST DO IT! We are all our own worst critics, and that fear is what can put us off entering. However, if you learn to push through that, you can reap the rewards on the other side! I used the video editing app InShot to make my video entry with all of my favourite hair creations, and collating all my work together definitely made me proud to see everything I’d achieved over the year.

Do you have any exciting plans up your sleeve for the next year?

I have started hosting content creating days for bridal hairstylists. It offers them a chance to practise and perfect their techniques without the pressure of a wedding morning. These days are perfect for creating images for awards too.

How has winning Professional Bridal Stylist of the Year 2024 impacted your business and your clients? It has given my brand the spotlight to help and inspire other bridal stylists to achieve their goals. My bridal clients are also very proud to be able to tell people they have an award-winning stylist! I will always be so grateful to Pro Hair for creating this fantastic opportunity.

Lastly… where have you put your trophy?! My trophy takes pride of place in my salon!

MENTAL HEALTH MEMO

In recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month, we shine a spotlight on the importance of wellbeing in our industry...

My Four Ways to Find Peace in our Crazy Industry

Our industry is simply the best. There’s no other job that gives you the satisfaction and pride of seeing transformations unfold right in front of your eyes. Behind the scenes of this ‘perfect’ industry, however, is a tale of burnout, anxiety and fear. To our clients, we are philosophers, designers, artists and mentors, but when you strip back the surface, we are just vulnerable humans exposed to a world of social rules and expectations. Here are some of my top tops for finding peace amongst all the chaos…

Take a Social Media Cleanse

Smile

1 2

Make sure you have a social media detox once a week –set aside one day where you will not respond to any messages or scroll endlessly through posts. Social media can cause major anxiety, and the best way to combat these demons is simply to limit your exposure to the potential toxicity and instead concentrate on your own beliefs.

Find Your ‘Off Switch’

Whether you are an apprentice, a stylist, a barber or a salon owner, finding some downtime is essential to escape the rigours of our industry. Switching off and forgetting about hair or business for a short while is what will prevent burnout. In my experience, once you’re burnt out, it is harder to come back from the damage it has caused you, mentally and physically, than it is to prevent it in the first place. Prevention is always better than cure.

3

A salon or barbershop should be the happiest place on the high street; we get to bring so much satisfaction to so many people! At times, it can be so easy to get bogged down in the day-to-day routine of ‘work’, but remember, this is so much more than a job. It is proven that the release of endorphins has a huge impact on our mental health, so make an effort every day to smile and laugh with your clients and your team.

Recognise the Signs and Talk

4

Understanding that you are feeling burnt out, anxious or scared is vital, and so is working for a company that recognises these signs. When you strike the perfect balance of a healthy column, clients willing to pay the right money for your expertise and a supportive salon to work in, you will find the work-related peace you need to thrive. However, if ever you feel that negative emotions may be becoming seriously problematic for you, it is important to use your support network to rectify the problem before they escalate.

Social Media: Supportive or Sinister?

Sarah Keane, owner of HOST Manchester, and Casey Coleman, owner of CHAIR Salons, sit down to discuss why hairdressers should use their social media platforms to raise awareness around mental health…

QHow do you use your social platforms to support mental health and why do you think it’s important for influencers to share this message to other hairdressers?

Sarah: I’m very open and honest about all aspects of my work life on my socials – the good and the bad. Whether it’s struggling to show up for my clients or dealing with other challenges, I believe that being transparent about these struggles sends a message to other hairdressers that it’s okay to feel that way. I’m also a firm believer in not supporting ‘hustle culture’ – I don’t endorse 12-hour days or pushing yourself to the limit for the benefit of others at the cost of your own health.

Casey: I think so many people only show the positive things online, but I pride myself in showing all aspects of who I am. I don’t believe that struggles should be the only focus when we’re trying to be positive, but in the same breath, it’s so important to help destigmatise these issues around mental health. Also, with a large audience, we have a responsibility to share these things because we have the power to reach many people and spread a message of positivity.

QAs someone with a large online following, how do you navigate the balance between maintaining your own mental health while also staying present and engaged online?

Sarah: The biggest thing for me is having boundaries. I don’t have notifications on for any social media apps, and it’s made the biggest difference to my mental health. We’ve all experienced the urge to check notifications late at night, and by having mine off, it really limits that temptation. I’m also pretty selective about what I share online and what I like to keep private. While I do share the occasional personal moment, like my wedding, most of what I post is focused on my work. If it weren’t for my work, I honestly wouldn’t be on social media at all – I see it as a business tool and I make sure it doesn’t take over my life. Casey: I used to post five times a week, but since doing social media as a job, I’ve found

that it’s really taken a toll on my mental health. Now, I only allow myself to post three times a week, and that’s made a huge difference. This way, I have a healthy balance where I don’t feel like I’m constantly checking my phone. I’m able to embrace life itself without being online all the time.

Q What role do you think hairdressing and self-care rituals play in mental wellbeing and how do you encourage your clients to use those moments for mental relaxation?

Sarah: To me, self-care and relaxation are two different things. When it comes to my clients, I encourage them to take the time to be pampered and relax during their visit, but I don’t personally view this as something that directly affects their mental health. That said, I do believe it can be a big confidence boost and help with self-esteem. Ultimately, I think it’s important to distinguish between relaxation – like enjoying a hair appointment – and the more profound self-care practices that support overall wellbeing.

QWhat are your top three tips for mental wellbeing?

Casey:

• Everybody should see a therapist. It’s really helpful to have a third party who has no connection to anyone around you. For me, it’s been so important to have that space to clarify things without judgement.

• Always share and reach out for help. Sometimes we feel guilty about putting our struggles onto someone else, but there’s power in that. It’s a way to let people know what you’re going through.

• Take time away from work. I love my job, and I love being creative, but there’s no point in pushing yourself to burnout or making yourself sick. Take time away to recharge, and don’t always be worrying about business when you are off.

For every $1 invested in mental health initiatives, companies can expect a return of $4 in improved productivity.

Mental health – or mental fitness as I prefer to call it –doesn’t improve overnight. It requires ongoing effort, regular check-ins and continuous strengthening. My advice? Seek out a licensed professional. Someone who will work with you one-on-one, take the time to understand your beautifully nuanced life and provide guidance tailored to you.

Ben Lifton, Founder of Big Little Content and Looth

The Strength in Vulnerability

As a leader, you’re expected to have the answers, set the direction and keep the team feeling confident. But the truth is, running a business isn’t always smooth sailing. There will always be moments of doubt, stress and uncertainty, and pretending otherwise doesn’t do anyone any favours.

I’ve learned that vulnerability in leadership isn’t about wearing your struggles on your sleeve; it’s about being real while still providing reassurance. If I’m facing a challenge, I don’t want my team to feel like the ship is sinking, but I also don’t believe in pretending everything is fine when it’s not. Finding that balance is one of the hardest parts of leadership.

When the recent budget was announced, like so many business owners, I felt the weight of responsibility. My team were looking to me for guidance and, honestly, there were days when I didn’t have all the answers, but instead of shutting down or putting on a brave face, I focused on honesty. “This is tough, but we’ll figure it out together” is what I told them, and that’s exactly what we’re doing.

Being open about challenges doesn’t make you weak; it shows your team that it’s okay not to have everything figured out, as long as you’re willing to adapt, learn and lead with purpose. Leadership isn’t about being invincible. It’s about being strong enough to be honest, while still steering the team forward with confidence.

Ways Salon Owners Can Prioritise Staff Wellbeing

Salon professionals dedicate their time to making clients feel their best, but busy schedules can make it difficult to prioritise staff wellbeing too. Here are a few ways salon owners can support their teams (and themselves!) by introducing simple wellness practices to enhance mental health, reduce stress and prevent burnout…

1 2 3

4

5

Encourage Mindful Breathing: Setting aside five minutes before or after shifts for a short breathing meditation can help regulate the team’s emotions.

Practise Gratitude: Consider starting a 30-day gratitude challenge where staff note down three things they’re thankful for daily, fostering a positive mindset.

Incorporate Movement: Hosting a weekly in-salon yoga session or sharing online excerise resources allows your team to unwind and release physical tension.

Implement a Social Media Detox: Consider a monthly phone-free salon day or replacing screen time with team outings to improve focus and connection.

Spend Time in Nature: Whether through lunchtime walks or weekend activities, this can strengthen team morale while reducing stress.

How Do I Avoid Burnout?

I come from a hard-working background where time was always money. I feel a slight bit of panic when I see gaps in my column, and it has taken me a while to see that this extra space to think and breathe is just as important as constant productivity. Learning to embrace that has been a process.

Fast forward a year, and I’m now scheduling three days per month where I’m not behind the chair. This includes doing some education, working on more intentional content or simply finding space to be inspired myself. I’ve learned that stepping back doesn’t mean I’m doing less, it means I’m working smarter.

My business mentor saw this as an area I needed to work on when we first started our sessions last year. It started off as giving myself one day a month where I wasn’t taking on clients, allowing me creative freedom to explore other areas of work. I was dubious at first, thinking things like ‘How could this possibly be beneficial for my business?’ or ‘Wouldn’t I just be losing money?’

I have to say, I couldn’t bear losing these days now. Not only do I not miss the money from working behind the chair, but it has driven up revenue in other areas of my business too. More importantly, I feel much happier, more fulfilled and more in control of the work I do.

Nancy Stripe, Pro Hair AWARDS Client Consultation of the Year 2024 Winner

One thing I’ve realised since starting my career at the age of 16 is that cutting hair puts you in a position of trust. Even before opening Diligents, I noticed that men open up when they’re having their hair cut. With this in mind, we’ve made the salon a safe space and encourage anyone to talk to us if they’re going through any issues. In the past, we have instigated referrals to mental health services for clients who have really been in need. Mental health, physical wellbeing and looking good are all closely linked, and we try to cater for them all. Our clients become part of the family, and we make sure they know that we’re here for them, whether that’s a haircut, a chat or pointing them in the right direction for support. Many men rarely know where to turn in times of crisis, so it’s my objective to create a more formal process whereby our clients can access mental health services more easily. Remember, those casual conversations in the chair can be a gateway to someone turning their lives around.

What My Mental Health Has Taught Me

At 28 weeks pregnant, I was admitted to a psychiatric unit due to severe depression. It was a huge wake-up call that made me realise mental health struggles do not discriminate; they can affect anyone, at any stage of life. What I’ve learned from my experience has shaped how I advocate for others, especially neurodivergent people like me.

Here are some of the most important lessons I’ve learned about mental health:

When people feel seen, heard and supported, they work better, feel better and bring out the best in those around them. Mental health should never be an afterthought; it should always be a priority. 1 2 3 4 5

Denial is a coping mechanism that won’t help in the long run. Sometimes, we don’t recognise when we need to slow down and seek support. It’s easy to convince ourselves that we’re fine, especially when we’re busy, but in reality, denial can act as a protective barrier, shielding us from how we’re actually feeling.

Mental health is just as important as physical health.

At HX Hair, we treat mental health with the same importance as physical health. If a team member is having a bad mental health day, I see it as no different from them feeling physically unwell. That open and honest culture makes all the difference.

Apprentices need more support than you think.

The role of an apprentice can be overwhelming – they wear multiple hats, juggle different responsibilities and often feel pressure to prove themselves. That’s why I make sure my apprentices take proper breaks, eat well and feel like a valued part of the team. When they feel motivated, their growth and confidence flourish.

An open-door policy can change everything. If someone comes into the salon late, looking tired or not quite themselves, I don’t just brush it off. Instead, I create a safe space where they know they can talk to me about anything. Everyone has bad days, and knowing they have support can make a world of difference.

Prioritising mental health benefits everyone.

Why Should You Care About Wellbeing?

SONIA MAGNIER, BUSINESS AND WELLNESS COACH

Implementing employee wellbeing initiatives has been proven to significantly enhance team performance and yield positive business outcomes. There are some compelling statistics and case studies that illustrate this impact:

• 91% of employees in organisations led by executives who support wellbeing initiatives feel motivated to do their best at work. (Study by the American Psychological Association)

• 61% of employees who are not thriving in their overall wellbeing have a higher likelihood of experiencing burnout often or always. (Gallup research)

• For every $1 invested in mental health initiatives, companies can expect a return of $4 in improved productivity. (World Health Organisation)

These findings underscore the critical role that employee wellbeing programmes play in enhancing performance, fostering creativity and delivering substantial returns on investment. By prioritising the health and happiness of employees, salons can cultivate a more engaged, productive and innovative workforce.

MIND YOUR

HAVING MADE A NAME FOR HIMSELF THROUGH A MIXTURE OF SALON, SESSION AND EDITORIAL WORK, ADAM REED IS ONE OF LONDON’S MOST IN-DEMAND STYLISTS. AS A BIG ADVOCATE FOR OPENING UP ON THE ISSUES AROUND MENTAL HEALTH, ADAM IS GIVING US EXCLUSIVE INSIGHT INTO HIS EXPERIENCES AND KNOWLEDGE BEHIND RUNNING A BUSINESS WITH A NEURODIVERGENT MIND. THIS ISSUE, ADAM EXPLAINS WHY TIMING IS EVERYTHING.

VISION, NOT GOALS

For such a long time, I was encouraged to create goals and hit them within a specific timeframe. However, for anyone who’s neurodiverse, if you don’t meet over-ambitious goals (and it’s often inevitable that you won’t!) it can be crushing and you’re essentially just setting yourself up for disappointment. So instead, I create a vision. You don’t necessarily need to timeframe it, you just need to make sure it’s clear. I like to create mine in a sketchpad. All of my visions and ideas go in one of my many pads, and it allows me to manage and monitor them way better in the long term.

TIME MANAGEMENT

The key part of good time management is communicating how YOU do it. I hear people say things like, “Oh, it’s so much easier if it’s down on an email or an online calendar,” but that does not work for me. I struggle with 10,340 emails in an inbox –I have to see something printed out to understand it. I know it’s old fashioned, but my mind is not programmed to work any other way. There is no shame in saying tech doesn’t work for you. For someone who’s neurodiverse, a diary (let alone an online calendar!) can cause real chaos. I advise being honest with yourself about what works for you, and adapt your schedules accordingly.

2 3

KNOW YOUR LIMITS

In our industry, we are encouraged to show up to the opening of an envelope and say yes to everything. You know what it’s like – if you’re not

How to manage time blindness:

1) Create visual schedules: I like to write my tasks down with clear time blocks to help visualise my day.

2) Break tasks down: Divide large tasks into more manageable steps with specific timeframes.

3) Use time management apps: There are great apps designed to help people with ADHD or time-perception challenges.

4) Stick to a regular routine: Consistency can help regulate your internal sense of time.

5) Be careful of time-consuming activities: Recognise activities or tasks where you tend to lose track of time easily. Yes, I’m talking about your PHONE!

there, it will be seen as a negative. We need to realise that saying no is OKAY! It’s also okay if you can only manage about 15 minutes before your overwhelm kicks in and you have to leave early. Be realistic about your capacity for saying ‘yes’. Running around like a headless chicken is counterproductive; you don’t get the best out of yourself and others don’t get the best of you either.

TIME BLINDNESS

The definition of time blindness is the inability to sense how much time has passed and estimate the time needed to get something done. It’s a condition that’s very common with neurodiverse minds. Knowledge is power, so if you can identify that this may be an issue for you, you can begin to understand how to manage it. For me, I can’t wear a watch because looking at the time causes me a lot of stress (very rarely will you see clocks around me either). Learn to equip yourself with the tools that can help with your version of time blindness –it is a game changer once you know how to handle it.

RESPECT TIME – YOURS AND OTHERS

I may be time blind, but I am punctual – in fact, I’m always early!

A lot of people, however, find serial earliness just as stressful as lateness, so it’s important to be respectful of other people’s thoughts on it and try to avoid causing others stress. If I know I need to be somewhere, I’ll still turn up early, but I’ll sit and have a coffee or get some fresh air and give myself some ‘me’ time. I try not to make a big thing about it or let it impact the other person I’m meeting. I’m a bit too long in the tooth to change it now, but I want you to know that this is a natural thing. Just make sure you are acknowledging your patterns to avoid causing yourself – or anyone else – any stress.

PROTECT YOUR BOUNDARIES

Your time is the most valuable thing you have. I am so guilty of prioritising work over family and friends, even though I know it’s wrong. People are encouraged to work every hour, but it’s easy to forget that time is more precious than anything in the world. If you have a creative project, or a brand ambassadorial role or whatever it is on top of your day job, make sure you give yourself the time you need for those things without forgetting your own downtime too.

“In our industry, we are encouraged to show up to the opening of an envelope and say yes to everything. You know what it’s like – if you’re not there, it will be seen as a negative. We need to realise that saying no is OKAY! It’s also okay if you can only manage about 15 minutes before your overwhelm kicks in and you have to leave early. Be realistic about your capacity for saying ‘yes’.”

5 6 7

REFLECTION AND RECALIBRATION

Recalibration is really important because it allows you to reflect on how you’re feeling. I’m way better if I give myself a week off every now and again, or give myself a morning off and avoid working late into the evening. If I over commit, what I’m doing is really letting myself down when it comes to recharging my battery. And without those things, I am likely to fall down. You have to carve out time to recalibrate and really protect it – even if that’s just with a good, long walk. If your mind is working in a different way, you will tend to prioritise immediacy over longevity, but if you are continuously over-extending and not allowing yourself to pause, you are heading for burnout.

THE THREE CS LOOKING AFTER YOUR MENTAL HEALTH

MELISSA TIMPERLEY IS THE MULTI-AWARD-WINNING FOUNDER OF THE MELISSA TIMPERLEY SALON IN MANCHESTER AND THE CREATOR OF MT MASTERCLASS, A COMPREHENSIVE PRECISION CUTTING EDUCATION PROGRAMME. THIS MONTH, MELISSA REFLECTS ON THE IMPORTANCE OF MENTAL WELLBEING IN THE SALON.

Caring:

As a leader, I understand how crucial it is to prioritise my own mental health; to be the best leader for my team, I need to be the best version of myself. That’s why I’ve been working with the incredible life coach, Jo Irving, on a bespoke 1:1 coaching programme. It’s been incredibly rewarding, helping me find the balance and clarity I need to lead with intention and authenticity. Taking time to focus on my own mental health and growth has allowed me to be a more present and supportive leader for my team.

In addition to looking after my own mental health, I’ve introduced several initiatives to support the wellbeing of my team. We’ve invested in mindfulness apps and run regular team activities, helping promote collaboration and self-care. We also provide Vitality private health insurance, offering access to therapists when needed. These initiatives encourage our team to make self-care a top priority, both mentally and physically.

mentally and physically. We encourage our team to recognise when they need a break and take it. This culture of rest and recharge is vital for preventing burnout and promoting long-term resilience.

Investing in HR support has made such a difference. Ian from Loop HR has taken the pressure off, freeing me up to focus on my team and business. Loop HR streamlines commission and wage processing, handles HR tasks like sickness forms and lets the team request and track holidays easily. It’s saved me so much time and massively reduced the stress of managing a team, improving my own mental health as a result.

We’re always committed to ensuring everyone feels comfortable in their role. If a team member isn’t comfortable working with a client, we won’t ask them to do so again. We have a zero-tolerance policy for rudeness, and we encourage the team to use our private outdoor area to get fresh air and vitamin D. We also provide opportunities for personal growth, offering training that boosts confidence and helps ease any anxiety. All these efforts come together to create a supportive, empowering atmosphere where our team feels valued and equipped to thrive.

Coping:

In our high-energy industry, managing stress and pressure is essential. It’s not just about surviving the busy periods – it’s about thriving through them. In my salon, we make a conscious effort to ensure everyone has the tools they need to cope with pressure, both

“I’ve introduced several initiatives to support the wellbeing of my team. We’ve invested in mindfulness apps and run regular team activities, helping promote collaboration and self-care.”

Coping isn’t just about individual practices; it’s also about how we approach challenges as a team. We focus on creating a supportive environment where the team can openly share their challenges and lean on each other when needed. Whether it’s through team-building activities like EFT tapping workshops or simply checking in with each other, we ensure coping mechanisms are part of our day-to-day operations.

Connecting:

Our clients trust us with so much more than just their hair; they trust us with their stories, their emotions and sometimes their vulnerabilities. These connections are what make our work so impactful, as our clients come to us not just for a transformation in their hair, but for a space to feel heard and valued. We play a vital role in our clients’ emotional wellbeing, and it’s a privilege to be trusted with that responsibility.

Ultimately, the mental health of our teams and clients is something that should be a constant focus. Caring, coping and connecting are not just buzzwords; they’re the foundation of a healthy salon culture. By adopting these values, we can create a more positive, supportive and inclusive space for everyone who walks through our doors.

THE TRICHOLOGY TRIO

THREE HAIRDRESSERS-TURNED-TRICHOLOGISTS USE THEIR HAIR AND SCALP EXPERTISE TO ANSWER SOME OF THE MOST COMMON QUESTIONS THEY FACE IN SALONS TODAY.

IN THE FINAL PART OF OUR SERIES, OUR EXPERTS DISCUSS HOW TRICHOLOGY HAS BENEFITED THEIR BUSINESSES

Steven Goldsworthy’sGoldsworthy, Swindon

How intense was your training?

Pursuing a career in trichology involves a blend of practical training and theoretical study. I dedicated one day per week away from the salon to focus on coursework, making sure I met my deadlines for each monthly module. This academic component included subjects such as genetics, chemistry, microbiology and nutrition, all with extensive textbook study during my personal time.

Monthly visits to the Institute of Trichologists in London provided hands-on practical training and deeper insights into the scientific principles. While I aimed to minimise disruptions to my salon responsibilities by allocating a specific day for study, occasional overlaps were unavoidable. However, this integration has its benefits, as it allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge directly to real-world cases within the salon, leveraging my existing expertise in haircare.

In truth, the training was more challenging than anticipated. However, the curriculum is thoughtfully divided into manageable modules, allowing for focused study of one topic at a time.

How has qualifying as a trichologist benefited your salon business? It has yielded significant benefits, both financially and in enhancing our professional reputation. We have attracted new clients seeking trichological services, many of whom have become regular salon clients too. Initially, I attempted to operate the trichology practice as a separate entity, but this approach led to duplicated administrative efforts and expenses. After a year, we consolidated the services, designating a dedicated room and specialist within the salon.

Darren Fowler, Fowler35, London

How do you attract new clients to your trichology services?

Building a trichology business isn’t just about offering treatments; it’s about trust. Having spent 30 years at Fowler35, I’ve naturally built strong relationships with clients who trust my expertise. That trust extends to my work at London Hair and Scalp Health, where I take a specialist approach to hair and scalp issues.

A big part of attracting new clients is education, both in-salon and online. I regularly share insights about hair loss and scalp conditions through social media, blogs and newsletters. This helps potential clients see the value in trichology and understand how it differs from traditional hairdressing.

Collaboration is also key. Partnering with medical professionals, beauty clinics and wellness spaces brings in new referrals. Plus, offering initial consultations allows people to ask questions before committing to a full treatment plan.

What percentage of your trichology clients come from your salon and how do you approach hairdressing clients about scalp concerns?

Around 40% of my trichology clients were first salon clients at Fowler35. That connection helps, but it’s important to remember that not every hair client immediately sees the value in trichology.

The best way to introduce the subject is without pressure. If a client is experiencing hair thinning, excess shedding or scalp irritation, I simply ask whether it’s something they’d like to explore further. It’s about having a conversation rather than making them feel self-conscious.

Rob Eaton, Russell Eaton, Leeds and Barnsley

How has your trichology training helped you develop as a hair professional?

The investment in both learning the skills of a trichologist and in the space I created within the salon was definitely long term. I combine the trichology services with my salon work and now I have the freedom to decide which area I most want to focus on as my career develops. Right now, I feel equally passionate about them both. I love that changing hair for a client can make such a big impact, in both the areas of trichology and hairdressing.

The actual process was two years of education at the Institute of Trichologists, followed by two years of mentorship with the Institute while I implemented the services and submitted case studies to be checked. After that, it has been an organic growth of the services in the salon.

How has being a trained trichologist benefited your salon clients?

It has had a really positive impact. Our clients love the fact that we have an in-salon trichologist, and the added level of expertise helps in so many areas of consultations and advanced hair knowledge. In a competitive world where there are so many options for clients, our point of difference in our area has been enhanced by the addition of trichology services.

DOES AGE IMPACT CONFIDENCE?

WITH THE HELP

OF

VTCT

SKILLS,

WE

LOOK AT

WHY NEWLY QUALIFIED STYLISTS ARE STRUGGLING AND HOW THE INDUSTRY CAN HELP.

Confidence is a critical factor in a stylist’s success, but for many newly qualified hairdressers, it’s one of the biggest struggles. Fresh survey data from VTCT Skills reveals that confidence concerns can differ depending on the age at which stylists qualify. And whilst the reasons for confidence crises can differ, what is clear is that each new qualifying band comes with their own challenges. While younger professionals battle inexperience and self-doubt behind the chair, older entrants face challenges in establishing themselves, building a client base and keeping up with a rapidly evolving industry.

In a sector that thrives on creativity and connection, confidence is key! Look at these key findings from a VTCT Skills survey of 260 learners who qualified in an NVQ Level 3 or higher in the last three years…

Younger Stylists (18-25) make up the largest group of newly qualified professionals (36.5%), but they also experience the highest rate of confidence struggles, with 50% stating confidence as their biggest post-qualification challenge. Many report feeling hesitant with decision-making, client consultations and executing techniques without supervision. Adapting to the realities of salon life can be overwhelming, particularly in high-pressure environments and many wish they had more hands-on experience before qualifying.

Stylists qualifying in their 30s (29.6%) also report significant confidence challenges (35%), but for different reasons, as many struggle with positioning themselves in the industry, securing clients and managing the business side of hairdressing. Confidence issues often relate to establishing themselves in the industry and many cite struggles with securing clients, pricing their services and marketing themselves.

Older Stylists (40+) face lower confidence struggles overall (only 5%), but often report difficulties with digital marketing and adapting to modern salon business strategies. A digital knowledge gap exists, with many feeling unprepared for social media-driven business strategies. Some experience imposter syndrome when entering an industry where younger stylists dominate trends and platforms.

Across all age groups, a key missing skill is business and client management. Many respondents expressed a need for more structured training in building a client base, pricing services and marketing themselves effectively.

What the Experts Say:

“For anyone qualifying as a hairdresser at any age, I think one of the easiest ways to build confidence quickly is validation from within the industry. Having other hairdressers, especially ones you admire, tell you the choices you are making are good, is a massive confidence boost. Validation plays a big part in your mental health and confidence.

For anyone going straight into self-employment, I would recommend joining a hairdressing community online. There are many great memberships out there you can join to find support, advice, validation and ongoing education.”

Hayley Jepson, The Resilient Hairdresser

“For anyone struggling with their confidence when it comes to content creation, I have a few things I would always suggest they try. If they don’t want to talk to camera or present, take advantage of B-roll footage, where you are in the video doing what you do best but NOT having to look at or talk to the camera. It’s an easier way in, while still building up confidence.”

Help is at Hand

“We can always talk ourselves into a bad day! We can wake up and say “today just feels like a bad day,” but what if you woke up every day and said “today is going to be a good day”? The key is to trick yourself into confidence, and you can do this by changing your state of mind and seeing where it takes you. Above everything, you need to motivate your own mindset!”

Daniel Granger

On the opposite page, you can read about how VTCT Skills is launching a Membership Platform. This platform will give access to a range of bitesize training, discounts on insurance, individual portfolio pages so employers can recruit, and much more.

TALKING TRENDVISION

HOW DOES IT INSPIRE PEOPLE TO JOIN OUR INDUSTRY, MOTIVATE THOSE ALREADY IN IT AND ELEVATE THE WINNERS TO A PREMIER LEVEL OF HAIRDRESSING?

Globally recognised for championing exceptional hairdressing talent, the Wella Professionals UK & Ireland TrendVision Award challenges seriously brilliant hairdressers to push themselves and their creativity to the limit.

2025 could be your year! The competition is now open, so to get your creative juices flowing, let’s take a look back at the winning looks from the TrendVision 2024 UK & Ireland Final. Come with us to meet the winners and get their insider knowledge on everything from style inspiration to final creations.

“ Winning a TrendVision Award is a momentous achievement. This competition attracts the greatest hairdressing talent in the UK & Ireland, so to walk away with an award is incredible. Our winners should be immensely proud, and I wish them all the best with their future careers. ”

My inspiration

“ The inspiration stems from Christian Dior’s Gothic Romance catwalk collection, as I wanted to combine gothic style with my creativity and personality. I’ve been diagnosed with ADHD and I wanted to somehow raise awareness and show that it’s more than the stigma attached to it, I wanted to show just how creative people who struggle with ADHD can be. ”

“A rollercoaster of emotions”

XPOSURE CREATIVE COLOUR UK & IRELAND WINNER (STUDENTS ONLY)

SKYE HOLFORD, KLEEK APPRENTICESHIPS / REGIS SALONS UK

Talking technique

“I took inspiration from Wella’s Golden Hour campaign and used Shinefinity to create a soft copper peach as one of my main colours. This is also a nuance of orange which is the colour that represents ADHD. I wanted a nod to gothic architecture within my look, so I used a zigzag sectioning to represent the high peaks of Westminster Abbey and asymmetrical shapes similar to the external buttresses of Notre Dame Cathedral. This helped to add structure and strength to my vision, whilst also complementing my model’s facial features.”

That winning feeling

“I had a rollercoaster of emotions when I heard my name called out. I experienced a massive relief and felt proud for the first time in a long time. I also felt I’d done my Regis family proud too. As a newer stylist in the salon, I’d struggled with my confidence, but I have proved to myself that I can do things really well and that I should

Regis promoted my win on the booking website.”

My inspiration

“ My look was inspired by Harajuku Japanese fashion. The colours I used represented a sunset reflected on water –purple, pink and orange –and the heavy fringe I cut truly represents Harajuku style.

“It’s mind-blowing for me”

COLOUR VISIONARY IRELAND WINNER

MAGGIE GRANT, HOUSE OF COLOUR, DUBLIN

Talking technique

“The global colour I used was 55/66 in Color Touch – a beautiful deep purple tone. To achieve the illusion of a sunset and bring it to life, I ‘barcoded’ one side of the head, using the global colour and Blondor 6% to lift the hair to my desired undertone. Barcoding is a technique where different colours are painted to create a barcode effect in the hair; precision is key to achieve this look. I then toned each lightened bar with different colours using Wella Color Fresh Create shades –starting at Pure Violet and working my way down to High Magenta, before finishing with a colour cocktail of High Magenta and Hyper Coral.”

That winning feeling

“I was in shock when my name was called. I was so happy the judges admired my look because winning at TrendVision had been a long-time goal. I really recommend anyone to enter TrendVision; it’s an amazing opportunity. Winning this has opened so many doors for me –I have now worked alongside huge hair icons and Wella are giving me the opportunity to grow as a stylist by providing me with education. I also get to travel to Malta for the ITVA. It’s mind-blowing for me.”

My inspiration

“ Golden Hour – that magical time just before sunset – inspired my look. It captures warm, glowing hair tones, blending seamlessly into a rich, golden blonde with soft peachy hues. ”

“AN UNFORGETTABLE MOMENT”

COLOUR VISIONARY UK WINNER

DAWID MIELNIK, REGIS SALON, MANCHESTER

Talking technique

“I used a colour melt technique to create a smooth, gradual transition from the golden blonde base to lighter peachy tones. After sectioning, I applied the base colour (Illumina 10/04 and 9/43 with 9%) at the roots, focusing on saturation to ensure depth. Then I hand-painted the mid-tone peach from about halfway down the hair lengths, using Color Fresh Mask Peach, Lilac, Rose and Pink, blending it with the base to avoid any harsh lines. To create the colour melt effect, I feathered the mid-tone into the base using a soft brush with a slight overlap to ensure the transition was seamless. For the ends, I applied the lightest peach tone (Color Touch 10/34 and 8/43), again blending it into the mid-tone to ensure there were no stark colour divisions.”

That winning feeling

“The feeling when my name was announced

Talking technique

“My colour concept was an evolution of the 2024 Golden Hour campaign, using a colour palette of cooler pink/lavender and soft mauve tones, finished with a pop of gold. The creative technique on the top panel was a rectangular section to which I applied three colours in straight lines back to back, over-directing the hair to fall in the same sequence, layering onto the previous sections to create a pixelated gradient in the final look. The products I used here were: Shinefinity 20g 09/61, 10g 09/65, 1g 00/66, Shinefinity 20g 09/65, 2g 00/56 and Color Fresh Create in Uber Gold.”

My inspiration

“ My inspiration came from Vidal Sassoon’s Greek Goddess style from 1967, but with a modern twist, I used some autumnal tones to enhance my model’s skin tone to look glowing, dewy and goddess-like. ”

“Too wonderful for words”

CRAFT VISIONARY IRELAND WINNER

ALEX WHITE, HOUSE OF COLOUR, DUBLIN

Talking technique

“I used a global application of Koleston Perfect 66/44 on 6%, using a colour blocking technique on the fringe to create bespoke tones. I then hand painted balayage colour through the back sections using Color Fresh Create in shades Hyper Coral, Uber Gold and Next Red. I then used a concave texturising technique throughout the hair to create a flow and easy-to-dry feel. I then applied my products and left it to dry naturally under heat, finishing using a diffuser.”

That winning feeling

“Being rewarded for working so hard is too wonderful for words. It’s amazing to know that the industry icons judging the competition believed in my look. It was such an honour to win.”

Keeping on top

My advice for anyone that’s thinking about doing something like this is to just put yourself out there.

You have to start going to shows so that you can see what other people are doing and then you have to train your creative mind and feed it by always being on top of the latest trends. Learn to develop your mind to think 'actually, this is how I can make my mark on this trend’.

It’s actually a little bit easier than you may think it is. It’s not insurmountable; it can be done.

CHARLIE TAYLOR

Keeping it real

Why didn’t I win? What was the reason?

One year that really stands out to me was 2015.

I basically did a model that I wasn’t really happy with –it just wasn’t my thing, but I did it because I thought it would make me win. I didn’t even place in the top three that year. I was so disappointed because I put more work into it than ever.

I completely changed it the year after. I ignored what other people were doing, and I just did hair that I was stronger at and that I wanted to do. That was the year that I won!

THE BRIDAL EDIT

Here Comes the Hair

For the Bohemian Bride...

Liz Cooper, Pro Hair Awards Professional Bridal Stylist of the Year 2024

Bohemian bridal hair is all about understated elegance; think effortless ethereal vibes with natural textures and timeless, romantic charm.

This year, bohemian brides are embracing a ‘less is more’ approach, focusing on soft, undone waves, loose braids and subtle twists. These styles exude a care-free grace that feels authentic and feminine, perfect for brides who want to enhance their natural beauty rather than overpower it. More and more brides are embracing their natural texture, whether that’s through creating beach curls, subtle bends or elevating straight hair with a bit of tousled magic. The results are perfectly imperfect!

These images show how one style can be easily adapted for different stages of the wedding day. Starting with soft, effortless waves and twisted details through the crown, this can be easily transformed into a mermaid braid whilst keeping the crown the same, before finally switching to a low, undone bun – perfect for dancing the night away!

6 Tricks for Big Day Success

1

Great Expectations: All brides should book in for a trial, but it’s important to pre-warn them (and you!) that the look is never going to be precisely the same on the big day. Hair has a mind of its own, and it when you follow exactly the same process. This is down to factors like the climate, the products used and even hormonal fluctuations.

2Prep, Prep, Prep: I always aim to do as much of the prep the night before; it’s one of my secrets to success. I get the bride and bridesmaids to pop into the salon that evening to wash the hair and prep it. For example, Friday night at 6pm, the wedding party would come in for a wash and blow-dry (with a glass of prosecco!), then the next morning we can begin

3

It’s All in the Accessories: I keep lots of accessories in the salon, they’re so useful for trials and some even get used for the big day. I like to collect a variety of bobby pins, slides and grips with diamantes and pearls to give each bride plenty of choice. Having a good selection is always key, and I encourage my brides to experiment with them at their first appointment.

4

The Dress Determines Everything: As a bridal stylist, you need to communicate this right from the start. I recommend that my brides book their hair trial on the day they’re getting fitted for their dress. I’ll do the hair in the morning and then they get to try on their dress in the afternoon, giving them a clear picture of the overall look.

5

Updos and ‘I Dos’

“As wedding season is about to kick off for summer, we’re going to be seeing a lot more updos – but, with a little more interest this year! Braids will always be in fashion, but the knotting technique is on the rise. I find it’s a great, versatile way to add texture to your styles, whilst seriously stopping people in their tracks! Knotting is a fantastic way to help add volume and dimension to the hair, from creating crown braids to the modern take on the French twist.”

Nicola Kristel Hamm

Cater to All Budgets: Not everyone has an endless budget for bridal hair and each wedding party size will vary. Sometimes, I’ll do a session where I teach the older bridesmaids to curl the younger girls’ hair. This is a good way to work within budgets and still cater for each person’s needs.

6

Don’t Rush Off: Some of my brides invite me along to their reception, so I’ll always take my pins, tail comb and products to do a quick refresh. Brides love that they can disappear quickly and have me there to refresh their look. It works for me too – I get a night out and a bit of extra content for my socials!

TERESA WELLER

Modern Love, Modern Luxe

“At Neville, we see 2025 as the year of modern romanticism, where tradition meets individuality. Brides are looking for personalised, longlasting styles that feel effortless yet elevated, blending soft textures with refined structure. Timeless styles like sleek low buns and sculptural ponytails are being updated with contemporary twists – whether it’s a refined texture or a deep side part for added drama.

Brides are also embracing statement hair pieces, from delicate pearl-studded pins to sculptural gold accents and modern veils that complement, rather than overpower, the hairstyle.”

Afroditi Koutsouki, Neville Hair and Beauty

I LOVE TO LOOK TO THE PAST WHEN IT COMES TO FINDING BRIDAL INSPIRATION. I SEEK OUT BRIDAL LOOKS THAT HAVE TRULY STOOD THE TEST OF TIME, AND FOR ME, FEW STAND OUT MORE THAN BIANCA JAGGER’S LOOK FOR HER ST TROPEZ WEDDING IN 1971. HER HAIR WAS KEPT VERY SIMPLE AND ELEGANT TO PAIR WITH A STYLISH YSL SUIT AND STUNNING SILK HAT. SHE OPTED FOR RELAXED BEACHY WAVES FULL OF MOVEMENT, SHOWING THAT BRIDAL HAIR DOESN’T NEED TO BE FUSSY TO MAKE AN IMPACT – THE PERFECT CHOICE FOR ANY FASHION-FORWARD BRIDE!

CARSON, RAINBOW ROOM INTERNATIONAL

For the StarCrossed Lovers

“Romantic vintage styles are back in a big way for 2025, particularly Juliet cap veils, which are set to be one of the biggest bridal trends this year.

While they can work for almost any hair type and style, the look pairs perfectly with vintage or bohemian themes, so this should be reflected in the hairstyle too.

A low chignon is perfect for brides that want traditional elegance, while also emphasising the dramatic shape of the Juliet cap veil. Alternatively, opting for undone waves with a centre-parting is a fabulous choice for boho brides looking for a laid-back, cool-girl vibe.

Stylists should look to secure Juliet cap veils with discreet hair clips or sewn-in loops to ensure it stays in place throughout the day.”

ELEVATING YOUR BUSINESS WITH

HAIR EXTENSIONS

Bridal hair is one of the most important aspects of any bride’s big day. As stylists, it’s your job to create timeless, elegant and lasting looks that withstand long ceremonies, hours of dancing and any unexpected weather conditions. Hair extensions are the ultimate secret weapon for bridal styling, allowing you to add volume, length and structure to create stunning updos, cascading waves or intricate braided styles.

Incorporating extensions into your bridal services also opens up a huge business opportunity. Whether you’re a freelance stylist or working in a salon, offering extensions as part of your bridal packages can increase your revenue, improve your portfolio and secure

Why Are Extensions Essential for Bridal Styling?

Bridal hair isn’t just about making the hair look beautiful; it’s about creating lasting volume, structure and movement that holds throughout the entire wedding day. With this in mind, extensions allow for:

• Added volume: Even brides with long hair often struggle with density. Extensions add the fullness needed for Hollywood waves, lifted updos or sleek ponytails.

• Extra length: Many bridal styles –like boho waves or fishtail braids –require extra length to create an impact. Extensions ensure the final look has that dream-like finish.

• More styling flexibility: Extensions allow stylists to create bigger, more intricate styles that wouldn’t be possible with natural hair alone.

How Do I Choose Which Extensions to Use?

When choosing extensions for bridal clients, consider the style, longevity and maintenance needs. Here are some of my go-to recommendations:

Beauty Works Express Weft

(Best for quick application and volume)

• Ideal for brides wanting instant volume and length with a semi-permanent solution.

• Applied in 20 minutes, making it perfect for pre-wedding transformations.

• Flexible, lightweight and seamlessly blends into natural hair for easy styling.

Beauty Works x Maya Jama Clip-In Fringe

(For an on-trend bridal look)

• Ideal for brides wanting to switch up their look without cutting their hair.

• Perfect for soft, wispy bridal fringes or structured vintage styles.

• Quick and easy to apply, allowing brides to try multiple looks.

How Do I Introduce Bridal Extensions Into My

Business?

If you’re looking to expand your bridal hair services, here’s how to seamlessly introduce extensions into your business:

• Offer Bridal Hair Consultations

During bridal trials, introduce the idea of extensions to enhance the bride’s chosen style. Have samples on hand to show before-and-after transformations in real time.

• Create Bridal Extension Packages Bundle extension fitting, styling and aftercare into one package to encourage bookings. For example: Bridal Beauty Package – Includes Express Weft application, a pre-wedding trial and a wedding day styling session.

Bridal Party Perfection –Discounted clip-ins or fringes for bridesmaids to create a cohesive look.

• Use Extensions in Your Marketing Showcase extension transformations on your Instagram, website and bridal portfolios. Highlight before-and-after shots and testimonials from happy bridal clients.

• Offer Post-Wedding Services For brides opting for semi-permanent extensions, schedule a maintenance appointment post-wedding. Offer a honeymoon styling session or a colour refresh to keep their extensions looking flawless for months after the big day.

DO THE MATHS!

FOR YOU…

VAT doesn’t need to be complicated or scary, it’s simply a sign of growth! We are all paying VAT all the time, including things like our clothes, food and utilities. Plus, if you’re VAT registered, it’s also a sign that you have a high turnover (i.e., money coming in). Let’s simplify it…

£95,000 is the current turnover threshold for VAT.

= The money that enters your bank account before any deductions (like wages or profit).

This means, once you bring in £95,000 or more, you have to charge VAT on your prices.

On the normal VAT scheme, you charge 20%:

Cut & Blow-dry before VAT = £65

Cut & Blow-dry after VAT = £78

Total increase = £13

That £13 is NOT your profit; it is the VAT the client pays to the government through you.

VAT registration means you become a tax collector for the government.

NOTES:

VAT is simple. It’s not a tax to you, it’s a tax to the client.

VAT is one of the reasons why I always suggest adding 20% profit to your prices. Once you enter the VAT registration scheme, you have the choice to either increase by 10% or 15%, and then again to 20%. This is in place if you feel like an overnight 20% increase would be too

Here’s the great thing about being VAT registered though...

As a VAT-registered stylist, you can claim back the VAT you have paid out too

This includes items like...

Colour Tools Utilities Phone Bills Booking Software

So, that 20% from your turnover doesn’t go to the government after all.

Not VAT registered Monthly colour bill = £1,200 inc VAT. VAT registered Monthly colour bill = £1,000

much. Remember, price increases don’t need to be big and scary!

VAT in the UK for the hair industry currently has two schemes available: 1. The 20% Scheme – this is where you collect 20% from clients, which then allows you to claim the VAT back on goods paid. 2. The Flat Rate Scheme – this is where you claim no VAT back on your purchases, but you can only collect 13%*

from your clients. (The Flat Rate Scheme is only available to you if you make under £150,000* turnover though.)

REMEMBER THIS: You don’t lose 20% being VAT registered, you charge 20% extra, and you get to claim some back –that’s the important bit.

*Please check the Gov.uk website for all up-to-date figures.

Sheila:Hi Gail. What led you to choose freelance hairdressing?

Gail: My hairdressing journey began at 15, working as a Saturday girl in a salon, before I moved into a full-time apprenticeship through the government’s YTS scheme, earning £25 a week. It was a humble start, but it laid the foundation for my career.

After 15 years at the same salon, I faced redundancy. That unexpected turn, however, became the start of my freelance career. My husband, incredibly supportive and handy, built me a home salon, which was the perfect springboard. The decision to go freelance wasn’t just about circumstance, though, it was driven by a deep desire for creative freedom – I yearned to escape the limitations of a salon’s set style and product lines, and to truly build my own brand.

Sheila: What challenges have you faced as a freelance hairdresser?

Gail: As a freelancer, I’m responsible for all aspects of my business finances, from tracking income and expenses to paying taxes. Learning to price my services appropriately and managing cash flow has been a learning curve. I’m not just a hairdresser; I’m also a marketer, accountant and administrator now too! Also, while I enjoy the independence, working alone can sometimes be lonely. I miss the camaraderie of a salon environment, so actively seeking connections with other freelance hairdressers has been essential for my wellbeing.

Sheila: How do you overcome these feelings of isolation?

Gail: I’ve found that connecting with other hairdressers has been crucial. Since joining the FHA, the online forums and in-person events they run have allowed me to connect with other freelancers, share my experiences and build supportive relationships. It’s been such an essential support system for me.

Sheila: I’m so glad you have found this. Are there any skills you wish you’d had before starting out?

Gail: Oh, absolutely! Essentially, I wish I had a stronger knowledge of business management basics. Learning about expense tracking and how to set aside money for taxes would have been invaluable. Understanding the legal requirements for running a freelance business, including insurance and licensing, is essential, and I wish I’d done more research on this before starting to ensure I was fully compliant.

LET’S TALK!

HOW TO OVERCOME THE CHALLENGES OF FREELANCE HAIRDRESSING

SHEILA ABRAHAMS MBE, FOUNDER OF THE FREELANCE HAIRDRESSERS ASSOCIATION (FHA), SITS DOWN WITH FREELANCE HAIRDRESSER, GAIL HOLSEY. FROM SATURDAY GIRL TO COLOUR SPECIALIST, GAIL DISCUSSES THE CHALLENGES AND ACHIEVEMENTS OF HER FREELANCE LIFE AND BUSINESS MODEL.

Sheila:What advice would you give to someone considering freelance hairdressing?

Gail: Network, network, network! Networking can lead to new clients, collaborations and valuable learning opportunities. Secondly, don’t get discouraged if you don’t see results immediately. Stay persistent, keep learning and continue to build your network and market your services.

Sheila: I love that. How do you see the freelance hairdressing industry evolving in the next few years?

Gail: The freelance hairdressing industry is dynamic, and I think we’ll see some exciting developments. Clients are increasingly looking for personalised experiences, so freelance hairdressers who can offer bespoke services tailored to individual needs will likely thrive. The convenience of mobile services will continue to be a major draw, and we might see more mobile salons popping up too. Organisations like the FHA are playing a key role in raising standards. As more people embrace freelancing as a career choice, the industry will likely become even more competitive and dynamic. It’s an exciting time to be a freelance hairdresser!

SPACE AGE

HOW TO BUILD YOUR BRAND

WHEN JACK AND ROSS WILLIAMS-HIRST OPENED THEIR CO-WORKING SPACE, WILLIAMS & HIRST, IN THE HEART OF SOHO, THEIR GOAL WAS TO CREATE A SPACE THAT SUPPORTS AND CELEBRATES THIS NEW ERA OF THE INDEPENDENT HAIRDRESSER THAT WE FIND OURSELVES IN.

IN AN EXCLUSIVE SERIES FOR PRO HAIR, JACK AND ROSS SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCES AS SKILFUL SOLO STYLISTS AND BUSINESS ENTREPRENEURS. THIS MONTH, THEY OFFER THEIR TOP TIPS FOR BUILDING YOUR OWN BRAND.

At Williams & Hirst, we know that building a brand can feel like a big task, but trust us, it’s actually one of the most exciting parts of creating your business or personal identity. A strong brand not only helps people recognise you, but it also tells them what you’re all about. Here’s how we did it...

1

Nail the Basics First

Let’s start with the essentials. Every great brand needs a memorable logo, a set of eye-catching brand colours and a slick website. Your logo is like your signature; it should be simple but powerful, and something that people will associate with you instantly. Your brand colours? Think of them as your outfit; they should reflect your style and the kind of vibe you want to give off. Then there’s your website. This is your home online, so make it welcoming and easy to navigate. Make sure your contact details are obvious (no one likes hunting for a phone number or email!) and use it to shout about what you do best.

2

Get Social in Style

For us, social media has been a game changer. It’s where we can showcase the talent of the stylists who work here, share the buzz of the salon and connect with both clients and collaborators. From the start, we’ve been intentional about how we present ourselves online. We’ve developed a cohesive aesthetic – clean lines, vibrant colours and a mix of work and personality – that represents who we are.

3 Collaborating and Showcasing

One thing we’ve always loved doing is working with brands we admire. Whether it’s using products we genuinely love in the salon or featuring them on our socials, we’ve found that these collaborations have not only enhanced our services but also strengthened our identity. We’ve even reached out to brands we’re passionate about, and sometimes a simple email saying how much we love their products has opened doors to collaborations we didn’t expect!

4 Think About PR Support

We get it, juggling everything can be a lot. If you’re ready to take your brand to the next level, hiring a PR company can be a brilliant move. A good PR team can help you tell your story, get your name out there and connect you with the right people.

Freelance

“Your logo is like your signature; it should be simple but powerful, and something that people will associate with you instantly. Your brand colours? Think of them as your outfit; they should reflect your style and the kind of vibe you want to give off.”

5

Stay Consistent

Once you’ve got everything in place, the most important thing is to stay consistent. Your logo, colours, tone of voice and even the way you sign off your emails should all feel cohesive. Over time, this builds recognition and trust – the two things every brand needs to succeed.

BOSSIN’ IT

WHY IS PEOPLE-PLEASING KILLING YOUR BUSINESS?

I have a hunch that hairdressing attracts a higher-than-average number of so-called people-pleasers. Who else could stand behind the chair for 14 hours a day, making other people feel great while surviving on four coffees and a handful of Lotus biscuits?

‘Never ruffle anyone’s feathers.’ ‘Never hurt anyone’s feelings.’ ‘Never stop smiling.’ ‘Remember, the client is always right.’ As a woman, I’d been conditioned to follow these rules as early as I can remember, and they followed me right into my business too.

Wins’. This is sort of like a win/win, but this time your business has a seat at the table, too.

OWNER OF BOSS YOUR SALON, A COACHING PLATFORM THAT SUPPORTS THE INDUSTRY THROUGH BUSINESS EDUCATION, MASTERCLASSES AND THE RENOWNED PRICING CALCULATOR, MADDI COOK SEES BUSINESS THROUGH THE EYES OF THE HAIRDRESSER. AN ALLY, CONFIDANTE, TEACHER AND FRIEND, HER APPROACHABLE MANNER AND STRAIGHT-TALKING SKILLS ARE EMPOWERING A GENERATION. SHE’S HERE TO HELP PRO HAIR READERS WITH HER EXCLUSIVE SERIES…

How does this show up in your business? We willoften call it people-pleasing. It takes the form of not taking deposits because you don’t want clients to think you don’t trust them, or not raising Doris’s prices because she’s come to you for years and her husband isn’t well. Things like squeezing clients into time that doesn’t exist and pushing your own social life out of the way because you can’t bear to say no to a long-standing regular.

So, what was the main way I managed to shift out of my own people-pleasing patterns? I called it what it is: Self-Abandonment.

“I have a hunch that hairdressing attracts a higher-thanaverage number of so-called people-pleasers. Who else could stand behind the chair for 14 hours a day, making other people feel great while surviving on four coffees and a handful of Lotus biscuits?”

Really, when you think about it, talking about ‘pleasing people’ sounds kind of sweet, doesn’t it? But the term ignores what’s happening on the other side – the side where you’re left feeling depleted, resentful and like an under-earning, over-worked doormat. What can you do to stop this? Rather than going the complete opposite way – i.e., ruling with an iron fist and telling clients what you really think when they ask if you can squeeze them in this Saturday – you need to aim for what I call ‘The Three

You need to think about how you can keep (1) your client happy, (2) your business happy and, (3) do it in a way that makes you feel happy too. Maybe that means you take deposits across the board for all clients, for all visits. This way, no one is being ‘punished’; it’s simply a part of doing business with you that becomes the norm. Clients know it applies to everyone (plus, they get to pay less at the till, so it’s practically free! - girl math!) and the business is happy because you’re not losing out if people don’t show up. This will also quickly repel the time wasters and attract respectful clients who value your time and expertise.  Maybe it means getting clearer on what hours you’re happy to work and setting up a list of VIP clients who get ‘early access’ to your booking link? This way, it leaves your ride-or-die clients feeling appreciated, it teaches them to book in ahead of time, it helps you keep to your correct hours AND the business is happy because you know well ahead of time what your bookings, and therefore cash flow, should look like.

Maybe it’s finally getting around to working out your correct prices and building some different service offerings to suit different budgets. No, you’re not undercutting yourself (everything needs to be profitable!), but you could offer a service that refreshes a balayage without the need for the full shebang, so the client has options.  Whatever you choose to do, why not aim for three wins? And just wait and see how your business (and life!) transforms...

GiVE iT A curl!

BRING THE JOI BACK TO STYLING CURLS WITH JOICO’S LATEST CURLS LIKE US RANGE.

Designed to work naturally with every twist and twirl, coil and curl, this new curl-enhancing trio promises to leave hair frizz-free and fabulous.

A WINNING FORMULA:

• Algae Oil: To add moisture back into the curls.

• Moringa Seed Oil: To help stimulate hair growth and strengthen the hair and scalp.

• Vegan Protein: To help repair the hair by mimicking the protein found in naturally healthy hair.

THE POWER OF THREE:

& Define Curl

Crème Styler

Crafted to boost curl definition and add dimension, this cream leaves the hair feeling hydrated and looking healthy. Best used whilst the hair is wet, apply the product at the root and slowly pull through the hair to encourage the natural curl pattern to form.

Smooth & Bounce Curl

Hydrating Foam

Helping curls spring back into action by enhancing the curl pattern and locking out humidity, this lightweight formula is best used on wet hair. Apply a generous amount throughout the mid-lengths to ends, allowing the hair to air-dry or alternatively use a diffuser.

Define & Seal Curl

Defining Gelée

This product improves curl definition and creates a cast around each individual strand to replenish moisture in thirsty curls. Apply the product to wet hair and allow the hair to air-dry naturally or with a diffuser. Once the hair is dry, scrunch the curls to break the cast and allow the natural curl pattern to form.

WATCH THIS SPACE – YOU SAW THEM HERE FIRST!

YOU SAWTHEM HERE first! GEORGIA MOUNTAIN

@ Lulabells, Norfolk

Hi Georgia, can you tell us a bit about your background? How did you get into hairdressing?

My mum was a hairdresser when she was younger, and she had always encouraged me to go into the industry too. I was literally born to be behind the chair! As a little girl, I had my own salon set up and

I would spend hours in there! As soon as I got the opportunity, it was no surprise that I joined a salon and worked my way up from sweeping the floor to behind the chair. This was where my career started, and I stayed there for just over six years before moving on and opening my own salon.

What’s been your biggest career highlight so far?

My biggest career highlight so far has been finalising in the British Hairdressing Awards Newcomer of the Year category last year. It’s always been a dream of mine

to be a part of these awards, so to finalise the first year that I entered was a huge achievement.

Who are your mentors and what have they taught you?

I’ve worked alongside Desmond Murray a few times, and he taught me a lot about session styling and editorial work. He’s such an amazing hairdresser and a real delight to work with. I also met and became great friends with Niamh Hayden through Matrix, and we are often sharing colour techniques and bouncing our ideas off one another!

What does the hairdressing industry look like to you today?

The hairdressing industry is full of opportunities, creativity and excitement. It really is evolving all the time, and it’s such a great industry to be a part of.

What inspires your creativity?

I get a lot of my inspiration from going to hair shows and scrolling through social media – literally everything is at your fingertips now! When I create collections, most of my inspiration comes from things that I really like. For example, my 5 O’Clock Somewhere collection was actually based on cocktails!

Is hairdressing what you thought it would be?

Hairdressing is so much more than I thought it would be. I love how there are so many opportunities available to me in the hairdressing world, and I love how many different paths I can choose to go down. Each day is so different, you couldn’t possibly be bored!

Do you have a signature style or technique that sets you apart?

I think a lot of people know me for colour, especially a vivid or a blonde. It’s actually a bit of a joke in the salon as to how excited I get when somebody says they want colourful hair! I only really started creating vivids during lockdown, where I spent a lot of time playing around on doll heads and working on different techniques to discover my creative flair!

How do you think social media is changing the hairdressing industry? Social media is having a massive impact on the industry, not only for us stylists, but for clients as well. Most of the time, I have clients saying to me “I’ve seen this on TikTok –can you create this?” Social media is also a great way for me to connect with like-minded people, and I gain so much knowledge and education from watching reels.

Are there any particular products, tools or technologies you’re obsessed with right now?

I have to say, I’m massively obsessed with all the Alfa Italia styling tools. I love them all and my collection is ever growing! My favourite product at the moment is the SHED Climate Control – it’s amazing for controlling frizz and stabilising the humidity, resulting in a shine that is just incredible.

What advice would you give to someone just starting out in hairdressing today? For anyone just joining the industry, I would tell them to embark on as much education as possible. Education is what makes us grow into who we need to be, so never stop learning!

What do you think makes a great hairdresser stand out from the rest?

I think to stand out from other hairdressers you should not be afraid to experiment with trends and be ahead of the curve, whilst still staying authentic to yourself –this is what will help you stand out when entering competitions and networking with industry leaders. A great hairdresser constantly educates themselves and adapts to the times, thus ensuring longevity in the industry.

“Hairdressing is so much more than I thought it would be. I love how there are so many opportunities available to me in the world, hairdressing and I love how differentmanypaths I can choose to go down. Each day is so different, you possiblycouldn’t be bored!”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years’ time?

In 10 years, I would like to see myself as a well-revered, award-winning industry leader with a strong regard for my colour work. I want to be educating stylists through workshops and masterclasses, helping them to find their confidence in colour. I love to travel, so I would also love to be a Global Ambassador for a brand that aligns with my values.

IN THIS SERIES, WE DELVE INTO THE DYNAMICS BEHIND SOME OF HAIRDRESSING’S MOST SUCCESSFUL PARTNERSHIPS. WHY ARE THE PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL ASPECTS OF THEIR RELATIONSHIP SO STRONG, AND WHAT ARE THE DAY-TO-DAY SECRETS THAT HAVE MADE THESE POWERFUL DUOS LAST THE DISTANCE...?

JUST THE 2 OF US

Luca on Scott

Scott started working in a barbershop near my salon and we got set up on a date. I thought, ‘Oh, I can just walk a different way to work if we don’t get on’, but that was seven years ago, and we haven’t been apart since! From there, the idea of setting up Kitch evolved very fast. We started looking at houses and realised the only way we could afford to buy one was to have our own business, and then it all kind of grew from there. When you work together, good communication is the main thing. When I’m talking about work, I communicate in a very different way to, say, talking about going to dinner. There’s a fine line between managing the work side of things and the relationship side of things, but I

LUCA JONES and SCOTT HUMPHREYS

think we’ve learned how to communicate well in both ways. Being clear on each other’s roles is very important; Scott and I very much have our roles and they’ve been there since the beginning. You have to play to each other’s strengths and try not to overtake the other part. Scott is very loud and full of life. He has these vocal cords that just travel, and I still haven’t found the volume switch! But he’s also incredibly caring and gentle. We have the same values and we like doing the same things. We do everything together. The thing we’re most likely to fall out over is music – Scott is in charge of the playlists for the salon, and I feel like sometimes we’ll be playing Saturday night

music on a Wednesday morning, and I have to say that this isn’t the right time or the right music for the salon.

Scott has a fantastic relationship with his clients, and he’s forced me to have a different view on the industry. I’ve been hairdressing a long time and it can be hard to break out of your mould, but I would say he’s reconnected me with the personal side of it. When Kitch won an award for Client Experience, it solidified everything that we’d been working towards; it meant that our hard work had been recognised and our ethos had been acknowledged as well.

Soon after meeting Luca, we were already talking about how we wanted to get further in the industry and what we could do to get there. Luca is a doer! As soon as you hear the words ‘I’ve been thinking…’, you know you’re in for a ride. Luca is calm and very thoughtful, but he’s strong – almost stern! – when he needs to be too. We balance each other out really well. If there were two of us, it would be bonkers, it just wouldn’t work. We’re complete opposites, but we complement each other.

this wouldn’t have happened. It can be a challenge living together and working together. We do everything together! It’s not always easy trying to navigate that, but we make it work. We also have very similar tastes creatively and with aesthetics. Sometimes, if we haven’t got ready together, we’ll turn up at work wearing exactly the same clothes! We’ve been together for seven years and I suppose you do end up morphing into one.

I work more on the brand side and Luca is the brains. Trying to do all the bits together just doesn’t work, and it was clear that Luca would take the reins on the business side from early on.

We march to the beat of our own drum when it comes to creativity. Kitch is its own kind of trend, and we work hard not to do what everyone else is doing or what’s already been done. We’ve got our 1950s aesthetic, and we’ve put our own twist on things. I would have never done this on my own, so if I hadn’t met Luca

I appreciate Luca’s drive to want more. I can be quite complacent, so I need that push. Luca can get a bit uptight at times, but then that’s what our balance is about – I help him chill and calm down a bit. A perfect day off would be doing absolutely nothing, maybe going for a little walk or a bike ride. We’re definitely looking to open another site and, depending on how that goes, maybe more in a few years. The goal is to grow the business and have a small collective of salons. Then, of course, lots of nice holidays –and maybe an early retirement!

QUICK-FIRE QUESTIONS:

Who’s the bigger perfectionist?  Luca.

Who’s the chattiest?  Scott.

Who takes longer to get ready for a night out?  Luca.

If you two weren’t in the hair industry, what’s another job you could imagine doing together? Creating wedding flowers or running a flower shop.

If you had to describe your partnership in three words, what would they be?

Scott: Amazing, strenuous and lovely.

Luca: Strong, fun and A LOT!

Tom Grennan

This month saw a top secret shoot with my client Tom. As you can see, we are working on a mullet-inspired shape, but showing the versatility of it on longer, curly hair. We’re keeping it slightly squarer at the back and sides to maintain a flattering head shape, and then retaining length throughout to utilise the texture, show off the curls and enhance the colour tones.

McLaren for F175 Live

To celebrate its 75th year, F1 launched the new season at the O2 in London for the teams to show off their new cars and drivers. I was very fortunate to be booked by my favourite team, McLaren, and to look after Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, getting their hair and grooming red-carpet ready. Netflix were also there filming for the new season of Drive to Survive, so I’m holding out for my cameo!

New Music Artist

I was recently at Sony HQ to cut and restyle a new artist signed to one of the labels before they’re officially announced and launch their first EP. These are key moments in the industry – they’re discussed heavily to make sure the artist is portrayed to the correct audience with the right vibe for their music and style. As you can expect, there’s a fair bit of back and forth on the shoot direction before you get the green light. Keep your eyes peeled for who it is…

Roman x Vodafone

More Vodafone activation for Roman and I again this month, this time in a studio in London. It was a nice change as we are usually outside in the cold! I can’t show much yet as the final product and imagery are not out, but be sure to check back in for next month’s

BRIT Awards 2025

Another year, another Brits! This time round, I had the chance to give Roman’s new, softer take on a modern mullet the red-carpet treatment. A mullet doesn’t need to be severe; it can still utilise the client’s natural texture without being really buzzed off at the sides and disconnected. It’s more about how it changes the face and head shape, and how the balance of the haircut helps this – that’s what’s key.

HARI’S HAS BEEN TENDING TO THE HAIR OF SOME OF THE MOST DISCERNING CLIENTS FOR OVER 48 YEARS, BUILDING A NETWORK OF FIVE THRIVING HAIR SALONS ACROSS LONDON. THIS MONTH, THE SALON GROUP’S FOUNDER, HARI SALEM, GIVES US A TOUR.

‘A FAMILY AFFAIR’ IS THE WAY THAT STAFF AND CLIENTS DESCRIBE THE BUSINESS. ITS WARM AND FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE AND BESPOKE APPROACH ARE THE KEY FACTORS THAT HAVE CONTRIBUTED TO ITS SUCCESS, ALONG WITH AN EXTENSIVE PROGRAMME OF IN-HOUSE TRAINING ACROSS HOMEGROWN AND TALENTED STYLISTS AND COLOURIST TEAMS.

How would you describe the design of your salon? Our design is character filled, unique and boutique.

Do you have any curated pieces or special features in the salon?

1) Our Pieces From India

I love to travel, and along with my wife, Catherine, we’ve been fortunate to travel far and wide over the years. When visiting India, I was instantly inspired by the people, the mood, the colours and all the exciting things it has to offer. On one trip to Jaipur Rajasthan, I came across a back alley with a guy selling old Indian furniture, and he offered to take me to his warehouse to show me more. I handpicked many items I loved, and they arrived with me in London sometime later via a shipping container. From this, I furnished three of my West London salons, plus put some pieces in my own houses in London and Sussex. I’m all about the curation of individual pieces, and I’d say my taste is a mix of themes – I’m not just dedicated to one.

2) Our Murano Chandeliers

Venice and its food is another passion that my wife and I have enjoyed over the years. We used to go there a lot, and it was there I discovered all their amazing lighting and the opulence of the Murano chandeliers. Because of this, we actually brought these chandeliers over and made them a feature in all of the salons. What I love doing is mixing different designs and cultures together to make something eclectic. This really is an art form though, as it’s very difficult to mix things up without it looking like a dog’s dinner! So, for example, when we did our South Kensington salon in 2019, we mixed Indian furniture with Murano Chandeliers and Corten steel.

3) Our Clocks

I randomly came across this designer once, Walter –he was a Belgian guy that used to do crazy designs. He started designing the clocks in all the salons, all completely bespoke. The idea is that I really hate salons or restaurants that are all the same or have no character. I am inspired by aesthetics and visuals, and I think it’s important to make the creative environment of the salons inspiring. I’m a detail person and so are many of my talented staff. Whilst the salons’ aesthetic and business continues to evolve, I like to think my personality remains present always and our values remain timeless.

How have you embraced sustainability within your design?

We’ve created a feeling of bringing the outdoors in, flooding the salon with natural light and plants. We’ve sourced many second-hand pieces across the interior, as mentioned above, and we also work with the Green Salon Collective too to reduce waste.

Do you have a dress code for your team?

Whatever they please! HARI’s is a diverse team family, so it’s important that our staff can express their individual style.

What’s the reason you fell in love with hairdressing?

The sheer limitlessness of it! Hairdressing isn’t just a job, it’s like a passport to endless possibilities. You can travel the world, educate, build a brand, work on fashion weeks, own a business… the list goes on. No two days are ever the same and, honestly? I wouldn’t have it any other way.

What’s the most treasured item in your kitbag?

My ghd soft bristle brush with my name engraved on it. It was one of the first things I ever got sent, and it’s been with me through so many incredible moments in my career. It really reminds me of how far I’ve come.

What’s the most memorable moment in your career so far?

Too many to choose from! Opening my first salon was huge, especially the build-up. My dad did the fit-out, and my family was there every step of the way, which made it so special. Then there was Coachella with ghd, and my

WHAT’S..? Samantha Cusick

on BETH DUTTON, BRISTLE BRUSHES and BATHROOM RENOS.

What’s the last thing you bought?

A house! (casual, I know). I just moved, and it’s a full renovation project. There’s an original 60s pink bathroom suite that’s just got to go, so my bank account is in recovery mode. Let’s just say I won’t be making any impulse

What’s your go-to hair product right now?

I can’t pick just one! My top three: ghd Chronos Max, Olaplex No.7 Bonding Oil and Authentic Beauty

Concept Cosmic Blowdry Jelly. Together, they’re the dream team!

What’s the favourite look you have created?

I recently did my friend Tanya Burr’s hair, and we switched from the bright-rooted blonde we’ve been doing for years to a softer, more lived-in rooted blonde. She absolutely loved it and, honestly, that’s what it’s all about –making people feel amazing when they walk out of the salon.

What’s your top binge-watch recommendation?

Yellowstone. I live for the drama, and my dad keeps calling me Beth Dutton, which I’m choosing to take as a compliment (even if he doesn’t mean it that way!) as she is a bad ass icon.

What’s your go-to takeaway order? Pizza. Always. Specifically, Pizza Express Pollo Ad Astra with no onions and extra hot green peppers. It’s actually an obsession – nothing else compares!

What’s your drink of choice at the bar?

A classic margarita on the rocks with salt – no fuss, no frills, just the perfect cocktail. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

What’s your go-to karaoke song?

This is so exposing, but I can do most Eminem songs without looking at the lyrics (not sure why, I wouldn’t even say I’m his biggest fan!). Or, if we’re going full country vibes, anything by Chris Stapleton or Dolly Parton, because I am a country music fan through and through!
