Good afternoon all and welcome to Haworth Park, the home of Hall Road Rangers.

I would like to offer a warm welcome to today’s visitors, St Mary's AFC, today’s match officials and, of course, to all spectators.

Last home game against Hessle Rangers, I'm still a little baffled how we have not won the game 5 nil.

That's no disrespect to Hessle, but we dominated the first half and failed to take our chances.

Our second half performance was not the best and Hessle duly upped their game and got the point they deserved.

As I've said before, we have a new squad, we have players out injured and we are coming up against some good teams and players week in week out.

We have to be on the front foot for 90 minutes and snuff out any danger any opposition may throw in our faces.

We trained very well on Wednesday night. It was a good bright session, lots of possession at a high tempo and that is how we will be aiming to go in to today's game against St Mary's AFC.

Ricky Spencer, who runs today's opponents, has been a friend of mine for a number of years having played for his old 5 a side team many years ago. Ricky always has a trick up his sleeve and from seeing their recent results, they have been edged out by the odd goal on a number of occasions.

Today's game will be far from easy, as we are experiencing week in week out.

I hope you all enjoy today's game, please make use of the facilities and I look forward to you cheering the Hall Road lads on.

See you in the bar, Cheers, Leon

Hall Road Rangers

Hall Road Rangers earned three points and a clean sheet in a 1-0 victory against Hull United at Haworth Park

It was a scrappy game as both sides struggled to adapt to the windy conditions.

In the sixth minute, Rangers carved out a half chance with an effort which was fired over the bar by Dave Harrison.

Sam O’Malley put Rangers in front three minutes later with a headed effort after meeting a Chris Spinks corner.

For the remainder of the first half, Hull United created a number of half chances of their own. This included a long range effort which went harmlessly over the bar and a shot that was comfortably saved by Rangers keeper Haydn Withill. Before the break, the visitors put an effort over the bar.

In the 49th minute, a set piece from the Citizens resulted in a header which went over

the bar. They then flashed an effort wide in the 69th minute.

Meanwhile, Rangers could have doubled their lead on a number of occasions.

After coming off the bench, Sam Loughton almost produced an immediate impact when he hit a shot wide in the 73rd minute.

Elsewhere, James Murray had a header hit the crossbar and then Paul Wray sent his header over the bar following two superb deliveries by Spinks.

Late on, Spinks saw a free kick drift just wide. Rangers boss Leon Sewell was pleased with the collective effort of his players: Speaking after the game, he said “I thought we were good in the first half. In the second half, it was a bit similar to last week as we sat off again for some reason and invited a lot of pressure.”

“Fair play to the 11 lads. They’ve put a shift in and they’ve been really hard to break down.”

“It was a scrappy game. The wind really, really spoilt it which is a shame.”

“It’s three points and a good goal that we scored and it’s a clean sheet. There’s a bit of frustration because we want the players to pass the ball with more conviction and not to be easy to read. We kept doing the same thing time and time again.”

“It’s still early days and we’re still trying to come together. There were a couple of forced changes from last weekend’s victory. Nine out of the 11 from last week have kept hold of their shirts and fair play to them.”

“I think we’ve got to give a bit of credit to Hull United. They kept going and didn’t stop. They asked questions of us, especially in the first half. I think they had about 10 corners. We defended solidly and that was really positive.”

“We’ve got into some good areas, but we’ve not had much composure on the ball in the final third. It’s taken a long time for us to get the ball up there and that pattern of play drops down.”

“There’s still things to work on. It was a very dogged effort today as we stuck together and ground it out.”

Hall Road Rangers 0 Hedon Rangers

It was a very frustrating Saturday afternoon for Hall Road Rangers as they lost 0-1 to Hedon Rangers at Haworth Park.

Hall Road had a chance to take the lead inside the fourth minute of the game when a James Murray header was tipped over the bar by Hedon goalkeeper Tom Rouse.

A few minutes later, Rouse made another good save to deny Sam Loughton.

Lewis Andrew had a free kick saved by Rouse and then Tom Iversen’s follow up was well saved in the 26th minute.

At the other end, Hall Road keeper Haydn Withill made a good save to prevent Joe Wood from putting the visitors ahead.

Tom Oliver became the next Hall Road player to be denied by Rouse as the Hedon keeper continued to impress.

In the 47th minute, some good interplay between Tom Oliver and Luke Bullement resulted in the latter firing an effort wide. Hedon then started to grow into the game as they began to see more of the ball and looked to threaten the Hall Road goal.

After coming off the bench, Sam O’Malley nearly made an instant impact in the 62nd minute when his looped effort came back off the crossbar. Callum Sallis saw a shot go wide after he was picked out by a Lewis Andrew set piece delivery.

Bullement produced a fantastic cross in the 78th minute to pick out O’Malley who put an effort wide of the Hedon goal. Hedon took the lead late on with former Rangers player Wood getting on the score sheet to

clinch all three points. It also means that Hedon have done the double over Hall Road in the league this season.

Hall Road joint manager Chris Burke was disappointed that his side were ultimately left empty handed:

“We started the game with plenty of energy and possession and created many chances, but we were unable to convert them. This carried on as the pattern of the game progressed.”

“As we all know, goals win games and we just couldn’t get the ball in the back of the net.”

“Energy and commitment wise, I couldn’t have asked for more from the lads. They carried on plugging away even after going down to 10 men in the latter stages of the second half due to an injury to James Murray after all three substitutions had been made. It was at this point that Hedon caught us on the break to get the only goal of the game.”

“As a group, we’ve learnt more lessons about what is required at this level and we know that we certainly have to start putting away the chances we keep creating.”

“I’d like to thank all the committee and supporters for their time on Saturday and look forward to seeing you back at Haworth Park soon.”

Hall Road Rangers picked up a point from their trip to Hornsea Town in a 2-2 draw.

With three minutes on the clock, Rangers went in front, thanks to a wonderful finish from Kian Salter, who got his second goal of the season.

The hosts recovered well from this early setback as they started to carve out opportunities on the Rangers goal. The best of these came in the 25th minute when Haydn Withill had to produce a good save.

Towards the end of the half, Rangers could have extended their lead. Kian Salter almost had his second goal of the game in the 39th minute when his effort was cleared away by the Hornsea defence after he was set through by a fine Dave Harrison ball.

In the 52nd minute, Hornsea got themselves back on level terms which came courtesy of a Luka Suluburic strike. The hosts continued to threaten as Withill had to make a couple of terrific saves in the Rangers goal.

Hornsea turned things round and took the lead in the 74th minute when Lewis Reece got his name on the score sheet and punished Rangers for giving the ball away cheaply.

From then on, Rangers pushed to get themselves back in the game and committed more bodies up the pitch.

They got their equaliser late on as Dave Harrison smashed the ball home when it broke to him after Luke Bullement’s cross come shot was well saved by Hornsea keeper Luke Cotton.

It could have been even better for Rangers. They had a chance to get a winner just before the final whistle, but Sam Loughton wasn’t able to get his effort on target. Rangers now

sit in sixth place in the league table after this result.

Rangers joint boss Leon Sewell wasn’t happy with his side’s overall performance:

After the game, he said: “It’s tough to accept a performance to that extent. We were fairly positive in the first half and I thought we started well.

Some players were in the game and other players weren’t in the game. It was a bit of a role reversal in the second half and we let Hornsea back in with two really poor goals. Really, really poor and it’s frustrating.

Testament to the players as they kept going towards the end. We should be winning games comfortably and we should be taking our chances.

We’ve still got a lot to work on. We looked like a brand new side today and we are to an extent. We really need the players to step up and deliver the goods.

Fair play to Hornsea. They’re an established side and have got some good players that have been at the club for a long, long time and they know each other inside out and our players are still getting to know one another.

The sooner the penny drops the better for myself and the management team because it’s starting to get a little bit frustrating now. We should be wrapping games like that up within the first half.

We’ve scraped a point literally by the skin of out teeth today. Given the second half performance, it’s definitely a point gained instead of three points lost.”

You never forget your first time! Wembley had that same impact on me as it has, and does, for many others.

Mine was an FA Vase final between Guisley and Gresley Rovers in 1991. My main memories are being slightly late and running up the steps inside as the national anthems were playing! Mainly it was seeing that famous patch of grass – and how green it looked. It wasn’t an ordinary pitch. There was something about it. The goals were different too, the famous tunnel way behind the goal all capturing my imagination.

Of course, the game probably helped. A 4-4 thriller between the two sides – in those days the final went to a replay – but the six-yearold me was hooked in.

Over the years I was lucky enough to see many more FA Vase finals at the famous ground. Diss Town winning in 1994, Tiverton Town’s back-to-back success a few years later.

Since working at the paper I’ve only missed one – Newport Pagnell Town’s most recent win with a decent excuse of having a five-day old baby.

From the Northern League domination and the evolution to the fixture becoming part of NonLeague Finals Day, the only real low point was watching Hebburn and Consett play their game out in front of an empty stadium because of Covid.

It was right, however, the players got their chance to play on that pristine surface.

For me, the FA Vase is a hidden gem in out footballing calendar. At the moment it’s early days, but as the rounds tick on over the coming weeks and months, the dreams and aspiration will begin to grow.

There’s a rawness about the competition. In the latter stages teams from the other end of the country are drawn against each other –modern technology means scouting has become easier and there are always contacts for managers to draw on for information.

But quite often it is football in its purest form, two teams who know very little about each other trying to win a game of football on a given day and aiming to take another step on the road to Wembley.

The FA deserve credit for how Non-League Day already has that feel of an important date in the annual fixture list.

Attendances have been huge over the years –some big teams have made it there of course –and the next challenge will be to increase the neutral support on the day.

So why not this year? The FA Vase final is usually an action-packed spectacle. Even if your side aren’t in the competition, try and get along. Especially if you haven’t been before.

Hall Road Rangers Ladies travelled to South Holderness on Sunday to play AFC Preston Ladies - a formidable side that won the league last season and were County Cup finalists.

The weather was bad, rain pouring and wind swirling, which wasn’t helped by the loss of Demi Thomas and Chelsea Caley through illness before kick off.

Rangers showed respect throughout the game, but also demonstrated how far the Rangers team have come from the heavy 12-2 defeat by Preston last season.

Rangers started strong and the league’s top scorer Emma Innes looked to have given Rangers the lead, only for her shot to get stalled and stuck in the goal mouth when the muddy conditions stopped the ball from going over the goal line.

20 minutes into the first half, Preston forced a succession of corners. They scored a good goal from direct from the corner with the Preston player meeting the ball brilliantly with a header to take the lead for 1-0 Preston.

Hall Road Rangers Ladies players kept plugging away and despite going in 1-0 down at half time, they still knew they were still in the game and they regrouped at half time.

The second half was very even with Preston not making the most the chances they created with their closest second half effort hitting the post and forcing Rangers keeper Kat Collins into a number of saves but Kat cancelled them out.

With 75 minutes played, Rangers got an equaliser when Leanne Baggley burst down the right wing and crossed the the ball to Chelsea Bailey out on the left wing and she took a touch, looked up and curled the ball into the top right corner for 1-1.

Late on Rangers thought they’d nicked the win when Shannon Tate burst into the 18 yard box on a very strong run only to see her effort saved which fell to Leelee Hanson who fired over the bar from close range.

Over the course of the game it was a fair result today with Hall Road Rangers holding last season’s Champions to a draw away from home

Today was a huge show of how far Hall Road Rangers Ladies have come in so little time in only their second season together.

Rangers Player Of The Game was an easy selection this week and went to Rangers shot stopper, Kat Collins in goal.

Kat, pictured below, made at least eight point blank saves in this game and was really in the thick of things for Rangers.

Hall Road Rangers and Hessle Rangers both took a point from a 2-2 draw at Haworth Park.

In control of the game in the first half, Hall Road had an early opportunity in the third minute when Tom Oliver had an effort saved. Tommy Waud fired a shot wide in the 15th minute and then Kian Salter saw his strike saved three minutes later.

Hall Road eventually took the lead in the 19th minute. Dave Harrison produced a cool finish to slot the ball home and claim his second goal of the season. In the 22nd minute, Sam O’Malley hit the post with a shot and then saw the rebound cleared off the line by the Hessle defence.

Harrison almost had his second goal of the game, minutes later, as his effort hit the side netting whilst Sam Loughton saw a shot saved. At the other end, Jordan Douglas produced a couple of good saves to prevent the visitors from equalising.

The second half initially was a completely different game altogether as Hessle began to have sustained possession of the ball. They got back on level terms in the 47th minute. Later in the half, Hall Road regained some momentum and looked to go back in front. They came close to going back in front when Waud and Luke Bullement both had efforts saved. However, Conner Harman restored Hall Road’s lead in the 84th minute when some neat footwork allowed him to find space and send a strike into the back of the Hessle net.

The lead could have been extended as Lewis Andrew’s free kick was well saved and then Loughton saw his shot parried away. Just before full-time, Hessle broke Hall Road hearts and made it 2-2 when the ball was

bundled over the line. This result means Hall Road remain in sixth place in the Humber Premier League Premier Division table.

Hall Road joint manager Leon Sewell gave a mixed reaction to his side’s performance: “We’ve picked a point up and a point a piece is probably fair on both teams.”

“I thought we were exceptional in the first half. We kept the ball well, played through the thirds and created numerous chances.”

“We’ve just not started in the second half and we were very slow out of the blocks. Hessle were always going to come at us when it was just 1-0. When games are tight, we have to be resolute and see the danger out.”

“To concede in the last minute is something we’ve experienced twice now at home. We’ve experienced it on the winning side of things away at Hessle Sporting and it just shows that there’s a bit of a pattern. The pattern is basically the fact that nobody’s going to roll over and die.”

“Fair play to Hessle. They kept chipping away in that second half and I thought they gave a really good account of themselves and they’ve pinched a point at the death.”

“We had a really good talk beforehand with the players about purpose and that togetherness. That definitely showed in the first half and towards the end of the game when we’ve scored our second to put us back in the lead.”

“As the saying goes, goals win games and clean sheets win titles. If we score our chances today, then the game should have been done at half-time.”
