Editors Note

It’s the most wonderful time of year - Long days, backto-back clients, Christmas shopping on your break… and finding a few gifts for yourself. Christmas parties. Hangovers. Running on adrenaline… and loving it. Team spirit. Champagne.

Whether you’re reading this on a well-deserved break or relaxing after a hard day behind the chair, we hope that you’ll like the theme of this magazine – Something Bigger. Being part of the salon industry, we’re a community. We’re lucky enough to be in an industry dedicated to making people look and feel better, and widely, we’re a pretty fun bunch.

Of course, Something Bigger can be taken literally too –we love a backbar sized product, and luckily, a wide range of our premium brands and exclusive products come in professional sizes for backbar and styling station use.

Elsewhere in this issue, we introduce Jaye Edwards, official Color Wow Ambassador and Richi Grisillo as new MOROCCANOIL Ambassador. We showcase the shoot from winner of MOROCCANOIL Style Competition, Nicole Thomas from BLEACHSUNDAY and meet Cosmo Simone, the new Lakmé Creative Director.

We spotlight blondes and give you tips for wedding styling, as well as officially launching the Lakmé TEKNIA SCALP CARE range.

Amongst it all, you can get to know us a little better with the ABCs of HCG, our Roadshow Recaps and we speak with Peter Beckett, Haircare Group Creative Director on his 2023 trend predictions.

We’re wrapping up 2022 in a nice bow and looking forward to 2023 – bring it on!

#NowPlaying

Asalon playlist is like a fingerprint – no two are the same. Whether it’s a mix of hiphop, lo-fi beats, classic rock or pop tracks, a great playlist not only makes your customers relax and enjoy their experience but gives your team a chance to bop along to their favourite tunes.

We love easing into the day with softer, more spa-like music before the day kicks off with songs to dance along with, that keep you awake, alert and give you something to sing along to. Music is a great mood lifter, and a

solid playlist is great to rally your team on long days with back-to-back clients.

Podcasts

Is anyone else super into podcasts right now? We love being able to wind down with a great podcast, and often the hosts feel like long-lost friends, but listening to business and beauty podcasts is an amazing form of education.

Whether they’re giving you tips and tricks to help run your business, giving

you all of the behind-the-scenes action on the beauty industry and consumer trends and – of course – keeping you on the pulse of all things hair and beauty. Podcasts are a great way of connecting to areas of interest, and getting advice from the wider community. Exploring podcasts remind us that we are part of something bigger.

Below, we share some salon playlists to get your team amped for the day, and some great podcasts that our team love.

YOUBEAUTY

Each week beauty guru Leigh Campbell and beauty tragic Kelly McCarren answer beauty questions. They love Color Wow Dream Coat and Philip Kingsley Elasticizer, so we know they’ve got good taste.

THE AHC

From The Australian Hairdressing Council, the team talks through the latest news, tips and information about the hairdressing industry.

STARTUP DIARIES

For a great business podcast, we love Startup Diaries by Kyle Traynor. In this series, he shares the stories of successful founders and all the valuable lessons they learnt along the way.

welcomes

...AS THE FIRST COLOR WOW AUSTRALIAN HAIR AMBASSADOR

JAYE EDWARDS INSIGHT 10

Color Wow is proud to announce leading Sydney colourist, Jaye Edwards, founder of EdwardsAndCo, home to Australia’s most innovative, fashion-forward hair and makeup stylists, as the brand’s first Australian hair ambassador.

As a pioneering force in the hair industry with eight thriving salons, a cult social media following and an internationally recognised team of educators, Edwards will be joining Color Wow’s roster of world renowned talent including Chris Appleton, Global Creative Director and hairstylist to Hollywood’s hottest celebrities including Jennifer Lopez, Kim Kardashian and more.

Known for his signature looks including sparkling brunettes, creamy blondes, killer curls, and textured beach waves, Edwards will be showcasing his world-class technique and education with Color Wow’s science-backed, game-changing formulations and product range within the Australian & New Zealand markets.

“There is such strong science behind Color Wow, and I want to show Australia how to unlock previously impossible results. I’m a Colourist first and foremost, and Color Wow is fanatical about the ingredients that go into their products. The brand has identified and banned over 60 ingredients found in most hair care and styling products because they can stain, darken and distort hair colour. That is something I need to share with the entire Australian colour industry,” says Edwards.

As one of Australia’s most in-demand hair colourists, Jaye’s “future proof” colours and seamless blends have inspired a generation of rich-girl hair, saturating Instagram feeds all over the world. In partnering with Color Wow as its first-ever Australian ambassador, Edwards will bring his coveted creativity and expertise to the brand’s collection of solution-driven products, developed to treat, restore, and transform all hair types, especially fragile, compromised, colour-treated hair.

“I love the direction Color Wow is headed in. I know it’s about to explode within the Australian Market and I feel honored to play such a critical part of that journey. I am so excited for all the future launches that I just know will be huge successes in the Australian market”, he says.

"There is such strong science behind Color Wow, and I want to show Australia how to unlock previously impossible results."

lvis Presley’s hair is iconic, and in the hit film Elvis, starring Austin Butler, Tom Hanks and Olivia DeJonge, getting the hair right was key to immersing the audience in the 50s and 60s era.

In an interview with Cinemark, Director Baz Luhrmann said, “Austin (Butler) had caps printed at the end of the movie that goes, ‘The hair has spoken’ because there would be moments where we’d be doing this and I had a wonderful hair team. We’d be working on hair … ‘OK, everyone, the hair has spoken, let’s go.’ That’s how important getting the hair right is.”

“And when it’s Elvis, of course, Elvis was a genius,” Luhrmann said about Presley’s hair. “He had like three pomades in the 50s and he knew how to throw his hair around to make images.”

Taking inspiration from the King of Rock n’ Roll himself and the blockbuster film, Haircare Group Creative Director Peter Beckett created 3 stunning looks that pay homage the era… and we can’t help falling in love.

BLONDE TRENDS

Blondes are having all sorts of fun this season and it’s all about the drama of tones and placement; the crafty way we can work tones into hair to make it look multidimensional and show off your cut.

Layering of hazelnuts and oaks: It’s a bit brighter and it’s about not trying too hard. Keeping things raw and with a cool edge. Work with the hairs’ natural tones, but amp it up.

Scattered splices of textural biscuit and mink is a great way to add strength and power to your haircut. A great way to really stand out and make a statement.

Soft subtle hues of strawberry and peach is what you want to go for if you’re not quite ready to take the plunge into the world of coppers.

Evo Fabuloso

Platinum Blonde Toning Shampoo & Colour Boosting Treatment / 1L

Great news – your Fabuloso favourites are available in 1L sizes! This dynamic duo are best used separately, but they’re like Salt n’ Pepa –we love seeing them side-by-side.

Philip Kingsley No Scent No Colour Shampoo & Conditioner / 1L

For your clients sensitive to fragrance, this extra gentle formula leaves hair soft and shiny, soft and manageable.

OLAPLEX No.4 & No.5 Bond Maintenance Shampoo & Conditioner / 1L

It’s finally here –OLAPLEX 1L pumps have arrived! These holy grail products are a must for any salon, especially those processing tons of blondes. And your clients will love them too as these sizes are available for retail.

It’s also a space for endless foils, wet towels and awkward-customer shuffles, clutching their capes, towels and trying to remember which station they’re at... but let’s not talk about that!

Backbar products are a great way to save time, money and space in your salon – and lucky for us, your favourite wetlines are also available in much bigger backbar sizes than standard retail.

Below, we chat with salons on what makes up their backbar space and highlight some of our favourite backbar products.

Color Wow Dream Coat Supernatural Spray & Dream Coat Curly / 500ml

Did you know that the cult styling product from Color Wow is available in a bigger 500ml bottle? With Dream Coat, the key to glass-like shine is to saturate the hair, and these backbar sizes are a stylists’ best friend.

MOROCCANOIL Intense Hydrating Mask / 1L

Dramatically improve medium to thick, dry hair with this deep conditioning mask. Perfect for the client whose locks need an extra bit of TLC, this mask will improve texture, elasticity, shine and manageability.

Tell us about the design of your backbar: Our backbar has been designed in a way that allows us to have access to all our favourite Haircare Group products, and with client relaxation and comfort in mind.

Tell us about your backbar product lineup: Our backbar line up is Evo haircare, MOROCCANOIL and Lakmé TEKNIA shampoos, conditioners and treatments.

What is your favourite backbar product? My favourite, go-to product would be the TEKNIA Perfect Cleanse Shampoo, it's great for removing product build up and oils from the hair and scalp, before moving onto any of our hair spa services.

A backbar and basin can make or break a salon (no pressure). It’s a space where you can be creative with your design, create a relaxing moment for your clients and proudly display your favourite backbar products.

NEOPRIVÉE salon feature

34 SALON FEATURE

Abackyard space with its own garden and large terrace, NEOPRIVÉE in Berlin, Germany is a private, quiet, undisturbed and luxurious atmosphere – you wouldn’t guess that it is also located at one of the busiest intersections in Berlin!

An incredible space that has an apartment feel to it, the salon stretches across 6 rooms, giving each space its own character, but coming together in one luxurious, relaxing and harmonious space that allows clients to rest and enjoy their service.

The second salon for owner Anja Meister, Anja opened salon Neo Berlin on Schönhauser Alle in Berlin (Prenzlauer Berg) in 2006. Schönhauser Alle is one of the most popular and beautiful shopping streets in Berlin, lined with boutiques, cafes and restaurants, furniture stores focussed on artful design to inspire creativity and market stalls throughout the year.

After many successful years at Neo Berlin, Anja’s landlord gave her the chance to convert another 200m2 commercial unit however she saw fit – and NEOPRIVÉE was born!

Anja drives ethical practices and ensures her teams are ecologically minded in both of her salons, infusing joy and passion into their creations. Sustainability is a large focus, and Anja also brings the exceptional garden space at NEOPRIVÉE into the salon.

Powered by green electricity, salon cleaning is done only with ecological cleaning products, and all customer drinks are organic and eco-certified.

Vegan hair products are used, and as many natural ingredients as possible. That’s why an alignment with Evo was so fitting for Anja and her team – Hue-verse being a complete colour system, where everything is kept simple without over-complicated systems.

Anja and her team love that the Evo range does what they should, and that the assortment is manageable.

The Hue-verse formulation speaks to the heart of the NEOPRIVÉE ethos: Honest products that respect people and the planet, through vegan, ammonia-free colour and demi-permanent gloss that provides out-ofthis-world performance without compromise.

Having a salon that gives back to the environment is important, but having a happy, successful and balanced team is also vital to the success of NEOPRIVÉE: with above award-wages, flexible working hours and 3-5 working days per week, Anja also makes sure that the team receive continuous training to support, grow and nurture their skills just like the environment around them.

Q&A with Nicole Kae

What role do professional treatments play in your salon? A huge one! For me, if my clients hair isn’t in the best condition possible, i haven’t done my job properly. Salon treatments provide a ritual and an experience and are very different to a take home treatments as they offer a much more intense result that can be supported with take-homes.

How have treatments impacted your business? It’s not just about the soft and shiny hair clients leave the salon with, it improves client retention too. If i can use an in-salon treatment to help improve the manageability of my clients hair at home, to make their life “easier”, they’ll always come back!

Who do you recommend treatments to?Just about every client leaves my salon having had a treatment. It’s the perfect addition to any salon service.

WHAT IS TOP DROP? What Makes Top Drop Treatments Unique? Top Drop is Evo’s brand new range of professional in-salon treatments, available in Hydrate, Repair and Platinum Blonde, that dish up instant hair gratification quickly, simply and effectively while respecting people and the planet. Instant Results Each treatment provides results that can be seen and felt instantly. Simply spray on the hair, comb through and rinse… no extra time required for you or the client. Ultra-Concentrated We could have used imaginary technology to make these products sound fancy but we haven’t. It’s the high concentration of active ingredients that give epic results. No bs required. Simple No boosters or over-complicated systems in sight. Top drop treatments are easy to understand and simple to use. SHOP ONLINE now 45

wedding season

YOUR KEY TO BRIDAL STYLING, AND WORKING OUT OF SALON

Bridal Styling

It’s that time of year again – wedding season! Wedding styling offers salons an extra revenue stream, stylists a side hustle or session stylists a way to make bookings in advance.

Working with brides to create a look that makes them look and feel beautiful, that lasts throughout the ceremony and reception and that they’re comfortable in is a talent in itself. Add in trials, wedding parties and the pressures of a big event… styling weddings takes calm, patience and a love for making people feel like the best version of themselves.

Below, we speak with Sarah Bergin from Pure Hair Studio, on her top tips for bridal styling and highlight some of the must-haves for your bridal styling kit.

The wedding stylist: Sarah Bergin, owner and operator at Pure Hair Studio

@hairthatglitters

Top Tip for Bridal Styling:

Preparation is key to getting a long lasting hold in any style. If you are relying on hairspray, you have already lost the battle. I like to start with the hair freshly shampooed, then directional blow dry the hair with the finished shape in mind.

For fine hair - I always prep the hair with Moroccanoil Treatment Light cocktailed with Hydrating Styling Cream. For medium/course hair, I use Moroccanoil Original Treatment and Smoothing Lotion. This ensures the hair won't be looking for moisture on the day which will help hold the style.

MUST HAVES IN YOUR STYLING KIT:

1. CLOUD NINE Curling Wand and CLOUD NINE Original Iron - if my brides are keeping their hair down I like to do a trial using both tools, one on each side to check how the hair softens.

2. MOROCCANOIL Root Boost - to perfect that natural looking height on the finest of hair!

3. MOROCCANOIL Dry Texture Spraythis has to be one of my all-time faves! Perfect for layering on soft, undone looks.

4. Color Wow Dream Coat - for the ultimate high gloss bride. An absolute must for Hollywood waves or sleek buns.

Our must-have products for your wedding styling kit:

BOBBY PINS

There are never enough bobby pins in a kit! General rule of thumb is that if you think you have enough, you don’t.

WE LOVE: Fusion Bobby Pins, Gold 5cm

A FINISHING BRUSH

Polishing the hair to add smoothness and shine, this brush is perfect for touch-ups between photos.

WE LOVE: Denman D82L Large Cushion Finishing Brush in Black

MEN’S STYLING

The groom and his crew should also look on point, and a medium hold pomade with high shine will keep gents’ hair in place all day.

WE LOVE: Reuzel Red Pig Pomade

COLOUR TOUCH UP

Extend highlights, fill in hairline gaps and touch up regrowth on your clients on-the-go with a no mess, no drip product that stays in until shampooed out. Dance floor approved.

WE LOVE: Color Wow Root Cover Up

Meet Nicole Thomas from BLEACHSUNDAY, the winner of the MOROCCANOIL Creative Styling Competition.

Nicole created a shoot for entry into the prestigious Australian Hair Fashion Awards, shot by multi award-winning photographer & publisher of The Journal, David Mannah. Nicole’s incredible “Be Your Own Muse” collection earned her the a place as finalist in the Queensland Hairdresser of the Year category.

Nicole also won a mentor session with MOROCCANOIL Global Creative Director Antonio Corral Calero, and full mentorship from Haircare Group Creative Director Peter Beckett to shoot her editorial collection.

“Creativity is often described as the muses whispering to us. When I am my own muse, I am empowered. I use the act of creating to know myself better, to grow and push my potential. I found my inspiration authentic to this idea through the 90s grunge attitude. A rebellion to societal norms materialism and conformity to the masses. It was cool to be indifferent have strength and self expression. As a teen living through the third wave of feminism I resonated with this movement and see it as my intuition whispering to my inner artist that influenced my collection."

SELENA GOMEZ AT THE EMMY'S

Actress and Singer, Selena Gomez stunned on the red carpet at the 74th Primetime Emmy Awards in her sleek updo created by Celebrity Hairstylist, Marissa Marino.

Celebrity Hairstylist, Marissa Marino, said, “We wanted something up and sleek to compliment the high neckline on her white Celine gown while still having some volume in the front for a retro feel.

Moroccanoil’s hydrating products were perfect for adding shine to this special look while also providing a strong hold to last through the night.” Sharing below step-by-step instructions to recreate the look by Marissa Marino, along with a guide to each Moroccanoil product used.

Get The Look:

1. On damp hair, use a dime-size amount of Moroccanoil Treatment or Moroccanoil Treatment Light to provide the perfect foundation for styling. This gives the hair a nice rich brown gloss to ensure it would be super shiny.

2. Next, blow dry hair smooth and follow by separating out the crown section of the hair and clip it out the way.

3. Pull the rest of the hair into a sleek high ponytail and tame flyaways with Moroccanoil Styling Gel Strong.

4. Once the ponytail is secured, curl the crown section of the hair and mold it into a voluminous side sweep. Hold in place by using the Moroccanoil Luminous Hairspray Extra Strong to guarantee a hold that will last all night.

5. Finish the style by tying all of the hair into a bun to complete the look.

6. Lastly, spray the Moroccanoil Glimmer Shine all over for extra shine.

10 TIKTOK TIPS

If you feel overwhelmed with just the thought of making a TikTok, here’s some tips to help you get started with creating some great content to make

the most of the hottest social media platform that is here to stay!

Trending Audio is Key

Did you know that Tiktok was born from the DNA of app Musical.ly? Unlike the other social media platforms that we may be used to, TikTok is designed to be sound first so the audio that you choose to pair with your video is key! You can add, remix, save, and discover songs and sounds via playlists and from other videos.

Using a trending song or audio will help your content get maximum reach and increase the chances of going viral.

2

Use the Right Hashtags

To give yourself the best chance of getting maximum reach, make sure you add trending hashtags as well as some niche hashtags that are relevant to your video. Trending hashtags are more likely to be searched and liked which can help your video content become more discoverable.

The Discover feed is all about trending hashtags so this is a great place to get ideas for the type of content you can create using trending hashtags.

Jump on Trends Quickly

Whether it’s a trending audio, filter or dance challenge, no one wants to be the last to jump onto a TikTok trend. The earlier the trend is in it’s the lifecycle with the less videos attached, the better!

Show Your Face

Users connect better with real people. TikTok is the space to be authentic and show your personality. Show your audience behind the scenes content and introduce them to yourself and/or your team. Be fun, playful and don’t take yourself too seriously!

Say It

4 5

1 3
Our Haircare Group social media guru, º Cayleigh Scalamera gives her Top 10 TikTok Tips below.
Speaking to camera makes users feel connected and as if your content was made for them. Alternately you can add your own voice over narration to a video too.

Don’t Overcomplicate it

In many ways, we need to un-do everything that we have learned about other social media channels when it comes to TikTok. Forget the perfectly curated feed and polished content. Unpolished content and raw videos are proven to perform the best on TikTok, meaning that making videos doesn’t always have to be time consuming.

Use TikTok Creativity Tools

TikTok offers loads of tools for creativity so your editing options are endless! You can try voice effects, filters, transitions, smash cuts and camera effects. One of the most-used tools is the green screen. This effect makes it easy to place yourself in a specific setting or in front of another image. This is great for humorous TikToks or for videos where you need to reference another image such as hair tutorials.

The bonus with using a greenscreen is that you don’t need to worry about where you are filming from or what’s in the background of your video!

Use Text Overlay & Captions

Including text in your video can help your engagement as someone will be more likely to stop scrolling to read. We have found that sometimes a short video with long, heavy text overlaid can help engagement as the audience will need to play the video a few times to read the full text.

TikTok’s text-to-speech feature creates an auto-generated voiceover of displayed text, in videos with the feature enabled. Text in your video can also help add context to your video and it’s great to use annotation on education style TikToks.

Post Regularly

Quantity over quality (well, kind of…) Th e more you are posting, the more likely it is that some of your content will go ‘viral’. There’s no such thing as a formula for going viral on TikTok, so the more you are having fun and experimenting, the better! If something flops, learn from it and move on to the next idea you have.

Get Inspired

There is so much inspiration and creativity to be found on TikTok. Spend time in the app to get inspired and find ideas. This is also the best way to keep up to date with the latest trends.

Make sure you save TikToks that give you inspiration or that you could recreate so that you can revisit them when you have some time to get creating.

For all the behind the scenes fun of Haircare Group, make sure you’re following our TikTok here!

behind the blonde :

CABELLO

inner of AHFA WA/NT Hairdresser of the Year, Stephanie Bellairs of Cabello by Stephanie Bellairs gives us the lowdown on her blonde ambition, including a great tip for getting that ‘lived in colour’ we all love.

Tell us your must-have products for creating the perfect blonde:

• Bottle blonde... live for this lightener it’s the cleanest, most even lift.

• Evo Hue-verse liquids for toning - can’t beat the shine

• Clear lifter for cleansing out old pigment

• OLAPLEX for allowing me to create healthy blondes

Top tip for getting the best blonde: Know your colour wheel! Play with tone and make sure the hair is lifted to the desired result.

Freehand vs Foils – what’s your preference? I’m a lover of foil work for a really clean lift but also love to freehand out old ends that need a cleanse. Really, at this point in time, I think lived in colour is a real combo of the two.

Advice for blonde maintenance?

Fab Pro all the way… we always make a custom shade for all our blondes. My go-to is a soft pastel pink or violet undertone, I find it keeps the blondes clean.

Who is your iconic blonde inspo?

Well I think it’s safe to say at this point in time Kim K is definitely holding this crown but for a more natural vibe I love Gigi Hadid or Blake Lively.

LOOK 1

Using bottle blonde and 20vol plex we worked our signature blonde technique, fine splicing visually to the root some more of a foiliage on the ends only, and worked heavier on face line.

• Globally glossed in-between foil work with Evo Hue-verse liquids 8.81

• Once all colour was processed, back-toned roots with 10g 8 10g 8.81 heavier at the crown dabbing the face

• The ends are Gloss 10.7

• Plex to seal

LOOK 2

This was a colour correction really tarnished brassy old colour. I worked a multi-dimensional technique adding low-light to blend the banding.

• Working bottle blonde and 20vol with plex

• Alt Hue.Verse liquids 4.03 only from roots to mids

• Heavier with just the lighter highlight on the face line

• Inbetween the dimensional highlights, I broke all the natural base with equal parts 6.1 & 6.7 20vol

• Hairline area we used equal parts 8.1 and 8.6 20vol

• All left out ends cleansed with clear lifter and 20 vol

• At the basin, back-toned the back roots with 6.81 liquids and hairline with 8.3 liquids

• Plexed and toned all the head with my special little pastel pink using red and blue Fab Pro

LOOK 3

I created this look with a full head highlight using Bottle Blonde and 20 plex:

• Cleaned out all ends with clear lifter and 20 vol

• Root shadow 20g 8 10g 8.03 liquids stretched at the crown

• Hairline: 9 liquids

• Glossed the whole head 10g 10.37 5g 9.3 10g clear liquids

• Plex

In australia alone, there are 116,000 people sleeping rough— that’s 1 in 200 people—impacting women, men and children across cities, suburbs and country towns. Short Back & Sidewalks provides haircuts to those experiencing homelessness, free of charge and free of judgement.

“When you’re cold, hungry, scared, and don’t know where you’ll be sleeping tonight, your appearance isn’t as high a priority,” says founder and CEO Craig Hollywood, “but positive connection and enhanced appearance are integral to your self-confidence, mental health and well-being”.

Hairdressers are the accidental counsellors of society and it’s the meaningful connections made through conversations that help the volunteers at Short Back & Sidewalks make a difference to some of the most marginalised community members in Australia.

As a brand, Evo’s mission is to bring about change in a fun and meaningful way, and homelessness has always been a cause near and dear to their hearts. From day dot, Haircare Group and Evo have donated stock to homeless shelters, and continually support people and organisations dedicated to this important cause, like Joshua Coombes, homie and the Happy Boxes Project.

Joining forces with Short Back & Sidewalks and our community of salon professionals and barbers is a natural next step.

“Caring about the community, being inclusive and making a positive impact to the world around us are all key values both organisations share,” says Craig on the partnership. And, with Short Back & Sidewalks’ goal to reach 30 services each week by 2025 (that’s 15,000 free haircuts and positive connections each year), we are calling on our free-thinking hairdressing community to lend a helping hand. Plus, we’ll be ensuring all services are equipped with Evo products and Haircare Group tools.

“One of the common things we hear from our community is that they would love to volunteer their time, but aren’t sure where to start,” says Nina Junin, Evo’s Head of Brand, “and Short Back & Sidewalks are making this a simple and seamless process”.

According to Craig, it takes two minutes to register online and two hours of volunteering a month is all that is required, but it’s about more than haircuts. “You’ll be able to connect with others, create awareness about the work you’re doing and put your own positive personal stamp on the hair industry,” Craig says, “volunteers also say their own mental health has improved”.

All volunteers are trained to create safe spaces for both those accessing the services and volunteering. From trauma-informed mental health first aid training, to video content and helpful guides of do’s and don’ts, all bases are covered. Additionally, Short Back & Sidewalks’ team of state managers are available to support volunteer haircutters in any way they need.

Short Back & Sidewalks operate in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne with the goal of expanding Australia-wide in 2022. If you would like to sign up, visit www.shortbackandsidewalks.com or scan the QR code below.

If you’re not a hairdressing professional, there are still many ways you can help. Donate, start a conversation about homelessness, or tell your own hairdresser or barber about Short Back & Sidewalks.

Together, we can make a difference.

Evo want to bring about change forthe better, which is why Haircare Group is supporting their partnership with Short Back & Sidewalks. With our community of barbers and salon professionals, together we can break the stigma surrounding those experiencing homelessness.
"Caring about the community, being inclusive and making a positive impact to the world around us are all key values both organisations share."

Your story is incredibly inspiring –can you tell us a bit about yourself: I’m originally from Glasgow and came to Australia in 2001.

In my previous life I was a house & techno DJ and regularly played at festivals like Future Music, Stereosonic, Summadayze and supporting international acts at clubs across Australia. I hosted a weekly radio show for 10 years that played all things dance music.

I’m not a barber or a hairdresser, I work in the civil engineering sector for a company called AECOM. I could design your roadway, but not your hair-style! But I know the power of the conversation with the person who cuts my hair and know the impact that conversation can have to those who feel forgotten about.

This year I won an Australian Of The Year Award for my work in founding Short Back & Sidewalks and was named City Of Perth Citizen Of The Year, which was totally unexpected, but pretty awesome!

What is Short Back & Sidewalks?

Short Back & Sidewalks is a for-purpose organisation that creates positive connections and breaks the stigma attached to members of the community in need, one free haircut at a time.

We help women with lived experience of domestic violence, youth at risk, people experiencing homelessness and remote communities.

We want to use Short Back & Sidewalks as a vehicle that not only plays a role in helping to end homelessness, but to change the conversation around how society is able to assist those in need.

How did Short Back & Sidewalks come to be? I lost my Uncle to substance use issues who was someone who at times lived on the streets, and grew up in an area of Glasgow that had been negatively impacted by poverty, so people in need was something I was aware of from a pretty young age.

This lit the fire of empathy inside me and it’s been growing ever since. This led me to come up with an idea whilst sitting having a haircut chatting to my barber Alex, and that idea was, hairdressers and barbers are the accidental counsellors of society, and we literally put our heads in their hands, so why not provide these services to as many people in need as possible and help them on their path home?

At Short Back & Sidewalks it’s much more than just a free haircut. It’s an opportunity for someone in need to have

a conversation and be listened to. It also gives people the ability to have a choice and the empowerment of choosing their own style for that moment of that day, which is a hugely powerful thing.

Can you give us an example of a moment that you saw Short Back & Sidewalks make a difference in someone’s lives?

We hear so many amazing stories from our volunteers. One that springs to mind was when a person getting a haircut had been called ‘Sir’ by one of our volunteer cutters, and that was the first time they’d been referred to in the pronoun they now identified with, as they’d recently been through a gender transition. This was a massive, life changing milestone for that person in their journey, and it came from the power of one word!

We also hear stories from our own team, who say that volunteering for Short Back & Sidewalks has improved their own mental health and has literally changed their lives for the better.

Your team are incredibly passionate –can you tell us about them? We have a huge team of volunteers across Australia working together to make a frontline impact.

We have so many different skillsets and have developed a close community not only within the spaces we work, but also with each other as volunteering team too.

How can salon professionals get involved with Short Back & Sidewalks? Simply by heading to www.shortbackandsidewalks. com and filling out a quick short registration. You’ll then be given an onboarding call from our team so you can then book into an upcoming service that works for you.

What can salon professionals expect from their Short, Back & Sidewalks experience? People can expect to make an instant positive impact to someone’s day by using their unique and awesome hair cutting skills.

The experience of volunteering can be a very fulfilling one, not only for those accessing the Short Back & Sidewalks services, but also can have very positive mental health benefits for the volunteer too.

We can’t wait for you to join the team and make your own positive, personal stamp on the hair industry, and to those who need it most.

What is the onboarding process for salon professionals like? Once you’ve filled out the registration on the Short Back & Sidewalks website, our onboarding team will take it from there. You’ll be contacted by one of our awesome crew, who’ll set up a call and then get you booked in so you can make an instant positive impact at a service close to you.

We know that everyone is busy, so all we need is 2 hours a month, for 6 months. We guarantee that one you’ve been at your first Short Back & Sidewalks service, you’ll be keen as to do it again and again!

How has the Australian hairdressing community supported Short Back & Sidewalks so far? This relationship with Evo will be the first time we’ve partnered with a hair industry leader which is super exciting!

Up until now we’ve had a lot of different types of support over the years from various angles where companies have donated products, scissors etc.

And now you’re partnering with Evo –that’s exciting! Can you tell us about that partnership? Partnering with an awesome, like-minded organisation such as Evo will give Short Back & Sidewalks the opportunity to scale our impact and help more people in need as we move towards our target of 15,000 free haircuts a year by 2025.

We know that inspiring positive change is something that Evo is all about, and that’s why this partnership feels like it was always meant to be.

The honest, humble and inclusive ethos of Evo is so close to our own hearts and we already feel like we’re part of the family. We can’t wait to see what we can all do next!

What’s next for Short, Back & Sidewalks? What started off as a couple of haircuts in a car park back in Perth back in early 2015, has now become something much, much bigger as we scale our impact not only in Perth, but Adelaide, Sydney, Melbourne and beyond.

Our aim is to make as huge of a positive impact as possible, and play a role in helping to end homelessness, together with Evo, as one.

energiSing musky blend of spice and zest That awakens the senses

Coming into the busy season, maintaining a positive mindset is crucial to combatting long days behind the chair and an ongoing cycle of clients (and let’s not get started on the colour corrections!).

In salons and the workplace, we want to feel like we’re part of something – a community, a family; connected. In fact, the Harvard Business Review found that when people have a sense of community at work, they’re 58% more likely to thrive at work, 55% more engaged and 66% more likely to stay with their organisation.

They also experienced significantly less stress and were far more likely to thrive outside of work, too – and we all know how important work/life balance is.

Helping clients look and feel amazing is why we do what we do and partnering with like-minded business is what keeps us energised. We love the education in this industry: understanding and

respecting those that paved the way, but also providing education to those who are just starting their careers.

This community that we’re all part of, this industry that is bigger than our salons; much greater than the chair in front of us, this is a moment for us all to look around and realise that we’re in this together.

For us, it’s more than hair.

Recently, we put a callout on our Instagram page, asking for any motivational quotes or mantras that you keep in mind, that we can share with our readers. We want to share the positivity of doing what we love, sharing knowledge with talented people, and getting to make clients look and feel amazing every day.

On the following pages, you’ll see some that came through: cut them out, pin them up in your back room and read them as you need. Remember – together, we’re part of something bigger. >>

Our Renovation Story
INSPIRATION 82
Lloyd Saunders with Tom & Sharon Ujihara

hen we first embarked on this journey we had no idea how close to our vision we would actually get.

Our renovation story started a few years ago - back in 2019. We were running Balayage in Addington but felt like we needed to spread our wings a bit and so embarked on the incredible journey that led us to where we are now.

After what seemed like endless searching for a space, we finally came across the beautiful location we now call home. Everything was perfect, from the location to the beautiful big windows that filled the space with warm, natural light. We had found our empty canvas.

Designing our Dream Salon

We had always envisioned a homely space that is elegant and luxurious, but doesn’t convey any snootiness the way some luxury establishments can. We wanted an inviting, clean-cut, modern environment that draws you in and makes you want to stick around.

We knew from the start that we were going to incorporate vintage pieces and eclectic collectables into the salon and so were faced with the challenge of balancing the Modern look we were after, with the eclectic, bric-a-brac that would lend a homely feeling. This challenge was overcome by us being especially intentional (and if you ask the architects and builders, probably a bit anal) about every little detail of our new home.

We loved the high, exposed metal, industrial looking ceilings and the all-whitewalls inside, which created a unique and open feel. We wanted to keep the walls uncluttered and bare, so that whatever we decided to showcase on them (whether it be retail products, or some of Tom’s StarWars Lego) really popped.

We opted to keep the ceilings exposed and raw, as opposed to having them sprayed black, and chose not to carpet the floors, but instead to throw a concrete screed and have it polished to reveal a beautiful raw marbled effect.

Our styling bays were designed with dualfunctionality in mind. The mirrors in the centre of the bays are removable, and once removed, reveal a stunning, large table in the middle of the room, making Balayage a perfect location for functions. In order to fully realise that dual purpose goal, we had to figure out a way to separate the basins from the rest of the room.

We didn’t want to create a permanent partition, so we chose to get creative with it. By having two sets of shelves on wheels, stacked with plants, occupy the space between the styling bays and the basins, we had made a versatile, soft partition that also looks beautiful. Having the shelves on wheels allows us to configure and divide the room however the occasion requires.

We wound the building team up even more when we decided to move the position of the front door from the West side of the room to the North, facing Welles street.

We wanted clients to walk in right off the street, and step into a bustling, vibrant,

beautiful space. This was a bit of a job for our building team, but they obliged. This allows our clients to step from Welles Street right into the heart of our beautiful salon. There’s no awkwardly placed reception area directly in front of you upon entry, instead, you will see the beautiful open-plan salon in all its glory.

On your right, you’ll find the seating area and beyond that, behind a stunning reclaimed wooden desk, is Lloyd - itching to make you a cup of tea or coffee. Along the west wall, you’ll find all our retail stock, beautifully displayed on custom-built shelves. Walk just a little further towards the basins at the back of the salon and you’ve arrived at a recessed shelf housing all the bits and bobs we thought would bring this place to life. There are records and books and magazines and figurines - you name it, we wanted this place to be visually compelling and to hold your interest.

So far everything has sounded a bit too good to be true. That’s probably because I left out a few hiccups we had along the way. Let me tell you, there was no shortage of opportunity to put our resourcefulness to the test once this remodel was well and truly underway… Initially, we had planned on having a mezzanine overhead which would be a staff area.

Tom had a whole chill-pad sort of vision in mind with a PlayStation, beanbags, kitchenette and coffee machine for our stylists to enjoy while on their breaks. Unfortunately, Covid got the better of this plan and we had to adapt and overcome. We managed to figure out a relatively practical work-around for this and have created a functional back-of-house setup. Luckily, our salon also backs onto the Atlas Quarter apartments and so when the weathers nice, we can slip outside and take a breather on the benches in the walkway connecting the apartments and Welles Street.

We also packed this place with plants, left and right, but we quickly realised how NEEDY plants are and so had to figure out a pretty intense watering regimen to make sure we kept our floral casualties to a minimum.

All in all, we worked incredibly hard to create the salon of our dreams, we started with a bold goal in mind and I really think we’ve achieved it.

Come and check it out for yourself if you don’t believe me ;)

Q&A

Haircare: Tell us about your renovation.

Balayage: All in all, the renovation was as exciting as it was frustrating. We encountered various setbacks and challenges and saw the estimated cost of the job nearly double as Covid tore up the economy. By the end we were exhausted and ecstatic to finally start a new chapter in a new location. Looking back it was all worth it and we couldn’t be happier with how everything turned out.

H: What was your inspiration for your new space?

B: The inspiration was largely a marriage of Modern design focusing on simplicity, functionality and efficiency, and eclectic Post Modern design featuring interesting collectables, art and a whole lot of plants and greenery. We took inspiration from artists and interior designers that appear in magazines like Frankie, but also wanted our own personal design language to be present.

H: How involved with the design and renovation were you?

B:Our involvement was deep and incessant. I’m sure the builders and architects were relieved to see this project finished. Tom’s keen eye for detail made sure no facet of the renovation avoided scrutiny. We agonised over placement of everything from lighting to the front door. In the end it paid off and we’ve created a salon that is as bespoke and special as the work we do from it.

H: Anything else that you'd like to tell us?

B: Renovations like this are not for the faint-hearted. This put every last bit of our resolve to the test. The challenges we faced and the time and effort we put into this was, in retrospect, insane. We wouldn’t change a thing.

Earlier in the year, we were lucky enough to be on the road again, visiting our Queensland and New Zealand families. Armed with a live show featuring Hue-verse and Lakmé colour demos, styling trends for the coming season and an exclusive sneak peek at some of our upcoming new products, it was fantastic to be face-to-face again.

Taking attendees through some of our tailored solutions, education to inspire and exclusive range of premium products, our Roadshows were not only a chance to reconnect and get out on the road again, but a chance to do what we love - partnering with you to help your salon thrive!
