Phil Barlow, Carol Durston, Chris Williams, Phil Barlow & Andy Dodds A recent recipient of the British Empire Medal has received a standing ovation from senior members at his local golf club at an annual event he founded. Andy Dodds received the Queen's Birthday Award for services to Sudbury Cricket Club, where he has been a Jack of all trades, and his nomination was also supported by Newton Green Golf Club, where he has been a similar stalwart. Nineteen years ago he launched the Andy Platter, a Christmas competition for senior men at Newton, but recently handed over responsibility to other colleagues. He was able to take a back seat for this year's event, and received an ovation for his past services. The club did not have a senior section when he started the platter, but it will now be taken over by the seniors and become a spring time tournament. This year's event featured a sprinkling of women players for the first time, and ladies' captain Carol Durston was invited to present the awards. Club men's captain Chris Williams was winner on count back with 36 points from Mick Barlow and, in third place, Phil Barlow 32. Di Cunningham won the competition for women.

Old Boys Reunion Hadleigh United Football Club is holding a special reunion on Saturday 19th July 2014, for all those who have made a contribution to the clubs history over the years. Ex-players, managers, physios, committee members and ‘Brettsiders’ along with wives and partners, are all welcome to attend the function, which will take place in the clubhouse at The Millfield. It is hoped that the evening will be a chance to meet and reminisce with ‘old’ friends and team-mates, stimulated by the showing of some memorable matches on film. We will start the proceedings at 6.30 pm, with a hog roast at 8 pm followed by music and a late bar. If you would like to attend and/or have any memorabilia which we could display on the night, please contact either Rick Pett on 01473 822370 or John Day on 0777 525 2102.

Hadleigh Tennis Club Mid-Winter News! Well Christmas is over and we have had our Christmas dinner, which was another enjoyable and entertaining event. Now all we have to do is lose that weight that we have just put on after the delicious meal! The committee would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members a very happy new year. Our teams are putting on a good show in their respective leagues, with the mixed team now in Division 4, (up from Division 5) having won two of their three matches to date. The ladies’ first team has done even better, winning all six of their matches so far! Well done all of you. Our next big event will be the AGM in February, so if any members wish to join the committee, please let a current committee member know as soon as you can. Remember, this is your tennis club and you need to take this opportunity to have your say! Our website provides directions to the club and courts. We are also publishing dates for club events in a calendar on the website. Please go and have a look at it: www.hadleightennis.org.uk and feel free to give us any feedback about the site. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week during the summer months: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. We are pleased to advise that annual membership fees have been held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (this will be charged pro-rata for new members joining the club during the season). If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or contact Paul Knowles on 07747 637147.
