Well done, thank you and what’s next? I was delighted to hear the news that ‘Tesco respect the democratic planning process and have decided not to appeal against the planning decision’ and that they have stated that ‘they are currently considering alternative options for the site and look forward to discussing this with the council and community’. My WELL DONE is to all of the hundreds of you in Hadleigh and the villages for supporting us throughout this long campaign. You have repeatedly responded to the call to write yet again to Babergh and your Councillors identifying your concerns and all of the very practical reasons why a supermarket was not suitable on that site, and you turned out and enjoyed the demonstrations. All of our local work held Tesco off from the first application in 1998 and the following government Inspectorate Inquiry, until the 2011 application, and as you know we then felt after that we had been put into the position where Babergh took no notice of the electorate and we could no longer fight the campaign on our own. For this last application we had to resort to using the professionals. We were very fortunate in receiving some extremely large donations from a local business and a local resident, plus other donations to the Hadleigh Society Campaign Fund that enabled us to fund the campaign. I am particularly thankful to Andrew Cann of Cicero Communications who organised the

speakers, wrote much of the final documentation, arranged all of the meetings and kept Hands Off Hadleigh totally involved so that it was still our campaign. I am well aware that it is dangerous to pick out one individual to thank but Andrew led us to this outcome. I will add another personal thank you to Bryan Haylock of the Idler who always managed to come up with our posters. Thanks Bryan, and thanks again to you all. And so to WHAT’S NEXT? Firstly in whatever we think would be right for the site we need to remember that Tesco only own two and a bit acres that were the grounds of what was the Manor of Hadleigh Hall and has been in Industrial use for some 700 years. The rest of the land involved in the Tesco application is in five parts, the Babergh Car Park, Town Council Allotments and three private individuals, and, all of it has limited access. ...Continued on page 5

Well done, thank you and what’s next? The piece of land owned by Tesco only has access via Pound Lane therefore it could not be used for any purpose that would attract large vehicles or a lot of traffic. (it already services 27 properties). You may remember that the first Tesco application involved knocking down 109 High Street and driving a road through there. This was clearly turned down by the government Inspector as we were able to show quite clearly that not only would traffic lights be required at the junction but that delivery lorries would need to use both sides of the High Street to turn into and out of the store. So to use the Brett Works site for anything taking large vehicles or a high density of traffic all of the land that Tesco wanted would have to be purchased and a new road made. A very expensive project . The owner of 109 High Street already has planning permission for a few small houses behind 109 and above the flood plain. Again one must remember that the water meadows are aptly named and not suitable for residential use, Babergh had accepted that if Tesco had been built the access road would need to be raised and that the car park would flood. It will be interesting to see the outcome of Tesco and The District Councils deliberations on the Brett Works site. While the town complains about the state of the site, I would suggest it is not so quite so bad since the fire that demolished some of the buildings. It is of course within Babergh’s power to make Tesco tidy up the site and also to tidy the land behind 109 High Street. Also Tesco bought the bungalow in Bridge Street for a possible alternative access, a perfectly nice 1970’s bungalow which they have boarded up and allowed to become derelict. And how about Bridge House? This property which is very obvious as one enters the town from Gallows Hill was originally the House of the Gas Works Manager. When Babergh opened their offices in Bridge Street, Bridge House was initially used by the Town Council, but in the 1980’s the Town Council leased the Market House (part of the Guildhall) and Bridge House was used for Babergh Storage. Having had a couple of windows vandalised Babergh then decided to board up all of the windows, leaving the eyesore that we have today. If any of us that live in the conservation area boarded up our windows the Babergh Enforcement Officer would be on to us very quickly demanding that the windows were reinstated, so come on Babergh now that you are not about to sell your car park to Tesco how about reinstating the windows of Bridge House and putting it back into use maybe you could donate a little of your car park to make a court yard garden and put the house back into residential use?. So we wait to see, Jan Byrne

Howard joined by Mitzi, Heidi and Tilly A Happy New Year to all my readers. I know you all love to see my three miniature dachshunds and here they are. They are as mischievous as ever. I was excited to join Bridget Keevil at the opening of her travel agent in the High Street – Travel Stop. Travel Stop has been trading for many years in other towns near by and will handle everything for you. A number of my friends have had good service for years. Do get in touch with Travel Stop. If you were asked to go to a film that started at 1.30 pm and finished at 9.30, what would you say. The Uncle of a friend of mine is larger than life in the classical world and arranged for a party of us to go to a one off screening of the 1927 epic film of Napoleon at The Royal Festival Hall in London. In the 1980s Carl Davis wrote a score for the film and that music was played by the Philharmonia Orchestra and conducted by Carl Davis at this performance. The film is considered to be one of the greatest achievements in cinema history. What an event. In order to entertain you, I do on occasion fantasize as I compose these words of wisdom. Some of my readers have anguished as they say that they have never caught sight of my staff Frank and Maria. So do please read comments on staffing with literary licence in mind. It turns out that Maria’s sister Cynthia has long borne a grudge as she had had longings for her brother-in-law, Frank. On New Year’s Eve Frank and Maria (who were fortunately driving their own motor car) were wounded by several shots that rang out through the High Street. Frank and Maria are facing an uncertain future. If you have any information concerning the incident then do let me know. As you sipped a drink to welcome in 2014, I bet that you resolved to make your Will? It is something that we all put off but it is usually a straight forward business Why not pick up the telephone and make an appointment to instruct us or I will come to see you – naturally within the delivery area of my column now that I have to drive myself! At the same time why not deal with your Lasting Power of Attorney. It looks like the property market will be buoyant in 2014. Contact us at an early stage to handle all property matters and to discuss your plans. We have years of experience and we are on your doorstep. Like my friends at Travel Stop, we provide a good personal service; you can speak to us and you can see us. We are regulated by The Solicitors Regulation Authority and as solicitors we carry professional indemnity insurance.

Award Winning Practice! In September the Hadleigh Health Centre were delighted when our Nurse Practitioner Kate Brett won the prestigious Royal College of GPs (Eastern Region) Nurse of the Year Award. Deserved recognition for her work she puts into the practice and with the local Nursing and Care Homes week in week out. It got even better when in November we were invited to attend the National General Practice 2013 Awards Ceremony in London after being nominated as finalists amongst hundreds of entries in the Team Innovators of the Year and General Practice of the Year categories.

We were overwhelmed and very proud to win the Team Innovators of the Year 2013 award for our work with the local Nursing and Care Homes led by Dr Gillian Croot and Kate Brett and supported by Janice Burton, our GPs, Practice Nurses, District Nurses and the rest of our team. We have developed a way of working with the patients, their relatives, managers and staff of the homes, SCC and many other health related organisations to provide an `holistic` approach to the residents health and wellbeing. Too long to go into detail here but we think this innovative service makes a real difference and we are pleased it is now being taken up in other areas of Suffolk as a broad model of care for their local care homes. It is rare that I publically have the opportunity to thank the doctors, all my other colleagues, clinical and non clinical who work in the Health Centre, The Mill Surgery Boxford, Mill Pharmacy, the local Boots Pharmacies and the huge number of supporting organisations such as SCC, Ipswich Hospital, the CCG, the local Homes and many, many more that come together to provide the `health service` in our area. Winning the awards is a huge thank you and well done to them all. From the whole team I would like to wish you a happy and healthy New Year! Peter A Larner, Practice Manager (Dr Flather & Partners)

Happy New Year My dear family and friends I do hope you have had an enjoyable and happy Christmas. In lieu of Christmas cards I have made a donation to St Elizabeth's Hospice. I would like to wish you all a happy and healthy New Year. Claire Ford

Travel Stop, your local independent Travel Agency Hello, my name is Anita Crowson and I am the Manager of Travel Stop, your local Independent Travel Agency that has opened on your High Street. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for the warm welcome that we have received and look forward to meeting many more of you in the weeks that follow. Now that Christmas is behind us it is time to put your minds to the year ahead. We are here and ready to help you with any travel plans that you may have for the upcoming year. With the passing of Nelson Mandela, South Africa has very much been pushed to the forefront of travel destinations. I was fortunate enough to visit the Western Cape of South Africa in November last year and thought I would share my thoughts with you. South Africa is often described as the ‘Rainbow Nation’, with its many diverse cultures and lifestyles. Great weather, striking scenery, outstanding wildlife, delicious food and adventurous activities mean all of your senses will be stimulated by all South Africa has to offer. Cape Town and Surrounds Consistently ranked amongst the world’s top cities, Cape Town is South Africa’s most culturally and visually diverse city. Spreading out below Table Mountain, its attractions include the designer shopping malls of the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, flower and craft markets, a wealth of museums and excursions to Robben Island. Relax on the magnificent beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, visit Penguins at Boulders Beach, or explore the nature trails of Cape Point and the vineyards of Constantia Valley. The Winelands A prime destination for lovers of good food and wine, the Winelands offer the opportunity to tour the vineyards with a chauffeur guide. Stellenbosch, South Africa’s oldest university town with its quaint shops and art galleries, also offers chocolate and wine tasting (highly recommended!). The Western Cape A Wines-to-whales escape awaits in the Western Cape. Not only are the areas around Gansbaai and Hermanus populated with wine estates, they are also famed for being the Great White Shark Capital of the World, with shark cage diving a popular pursuit. From July to November there is an opportunity to witness Southern Right whales as they gather to give birth to their young just offshore. The Garden Route Stretching from Mossel Bay to Nature’s Valley, experience the natural beauty of the Garden Route. Knysna is home to South Africa’s largest commercial oyster farming operation. At Oudtshoorn, explore the Cango Caves, visit an ostrich farm and see meerkats at play. Plettenburg Bay’s blue flag beaches hug the coast whilst inland activities include golf and polo. For scenic hikes and thrilling canopy tours head for Tsitsikamma Forest. Safaris In South Africa Few experiences are more rewarding than watching wild animals in their natural environment, free to move and interact as nature intended. A safari in South Africa promises a memorable and emotive holiday. Travel further afield Holidays in South Africa can be easily extended to include stays in neighbouring countries such as Namibia, Botswana or Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. Direct flights ensure that the sandy beaches of Mauritius are also within easy reach. Travel Stop, 57 High Street, Hadleigh IP7 5DY Telephone 01473 828728

The Children’s Society Collection 2013 This year the total sum coming from the home collection boxes is £1287.38 and from the Christingle Service 3315.75. Thanks to everybody who supports the charity and especially the faithfull box collectors, who made my stint as the local co-ordinator easier. Again we are very grateful to Mr. Smith from the market for providing the oranges at a minimal price. Sue Mitchell

Huge thanks to everyone that came and supported us on our Quiz night at The Fleece Hotel. 90 people in total came along and feelings were a most enjoyable night was had with great raffle prizes and food. A round of applause went to Jann who took on the roll of organizer and Quiz master! Special mention goes to The Fleece for coping with the huge demand for fish and chips that night, well done! Please make a date in your diary for our next quiz, which will be at the same venue on 24th April 20014. All the money raised went towards the rescue horses feed and bedding for November, but as you might imagine at this time of year when there is no grass and the horses come into their stables every evening, feed and bedding are daily essentials. If there is anyone out there who could help us and let us have some hay or straw that would be fantastic. The new project with Colchester Institute has started and is in full swing at French’s, with the tree and fencing damaged caused by the recent high winds the students and staff at the Institute have been working hard to help clear our orchard. The project is called ‘springboard back to work’, groups of teenagers with learning difficulties come to French’s 2-3 days a week and work on the farm. The group leader’s feedback is positive, the students have great enthusiasm and the work they are doing is showing how much it is helping those involved with their increased confidence, personal development, group skills and sense of achievement, which has been wonderful to see. Now our festive season has gone, well just about for those who are still recovering from eating and drinking too much!! If you have any unwanted presents or items that are cluttering your home, please bring them along to us or better still give Jann a call on the number below and she will pop round and pick them up to save you coming out. We are always grateful to receive anything that can be used in a raffle or re-sold to raise money for much needed funds, as our fund raising goes on throughout the year. This months feature is Lady, we are hoping some of you will kindly sponsor her at £5 a month. Lady is 12.2 hands high pony, in her mid twenties she has cushings and a lot of teeth missing, so we have her on a specialist diet to keep the weight on, especially through the winter months. She is a bright little lady who we are hoping will be coming with us to meet everyone at the Hadleigh show in May. Jim takes on the London Marathon! Following on from his `End to End` 900 mile bike ride from Lands End to John O’Groats with his longstanding friend Dick Beechener, at the age of 72 Jim Wilding is back for more. (Along with his 10 year old replacement hip). He is now due to take on the streets of London on April 13th for the 2014 London Marathon. Jim is running the marathon to raise funds for The British Heart Foundation. This is a charity close to Jim’s heart, as back in 1994 he first ran the London Marathon with his close friend and running partner David Williams. Sadly David died of a heart attack at the age of 42 the following year and Jim has decided to run the marathon in his memory. David ran several marathons raising money for various charities, he was also a member of Hadleigh Hares and keen supporter of Hadleigh United. His `task master` and `co runner` now is his daughter Kate Brett. Jim is in preparation for the 26 miles over the coming months and is looking for sponsorship for his chosen charity The British Heart Foundation. Hadleigh Mayor Puts Ears to the Test

The White Hart Hadleigh

En-Suite Accommodation Phil & Angie welcome you... We are open 6 days a week, Tuesday to Sunday for Lunch & Dinner (No food served Sunday evenings) and open all day Saturday and Sunday.

Fresh home made food, cooked to order Traditional Roast served on Sunday Booking advisable to avoid disappointment.

Checking the health of your ears, is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of turning on Hadleigh’s Christmas lights, however local hearing care company The Hearing Care Centre, were out in force at the festive event, raising awareness about the importance of your hearing and offering free ear health checks. After turning on the lights together with TV presenter Griff Rhys Jones, Mayor of Hadleigh, Councillor Brian Lazenby, came to support the awareness drive by having his own ears checked and meet staff from the centre. Michael Shade, Hadleigh based Audiologist for The Hearing Care Centre said, “It was great to meet the Mayor and that he came to support our cause. Hearing loss affects one in six people in the UK (around 1,350 in Hadleigh alone), so hopefully the advice we gave to people on the day really helped.” The Hearing Care Centre run a private hearing care clinic, every Tuesday at The Hadleigh Health Centre. The Hadleigh Farmers Club was established in December 1839 and initially held meetings every month alternating between the White Lion and White Horse Inns. It immediately had a lot of support from local farming families. The Hadleigh Farmers Club held shows and gave prizes to encourage and promote good farming. The first Hadleigh Show was in 1840 and they have been held either annually or twice yearly ever since, with the exception of the war years and in more recent times the outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease in 2001. We are already busy planning our 175th Show which will showcase modern farm machinery as well as remembering farming from times gone by, and there will be a display on Show day of photos and documents from our 175 year history. We would love to hear from you if you have any photos, videos or other memories from past shows that you would like to share. Please contact the secretary at secretary@hadleighshow.co.uk or 07584 568055. On our website www.hadleighshow.co.uk you can watch footage from the 1937, 1938, 1989 and 2006 shows. We will be filming this year’s show as well

Pause For Thought What are your favourite baked beans? I’m sure that some of you said Heinz? Did you know that the founder of that company was a certain Henry J Heinz whose life was a real ‘rags to riches’ story? Born into a poor family in 1844 he started his company in 1869 with a small plot of land producing bottled horseradish that became an instant success. When he died in 1919, he had built a company with 100,000 acres of farmland, 227 offices, 26 factories and 6,523 employees. The rest, as they say, is history. So what do you think he believed was ‘the most important item’ that he left in his will? A world famous company? No. Great wealth? No. Let the words that he left in his will speak for themselves: ‘I desire to set forth at the very beginning of this will, as the most important item in it, a confession of my faith in Jesus Christ as my Saviour.’ Henry Heinz died a millionaire but his motivation in life was not making money. In the Bible, Jesus said: ‘For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.’ (Matthew 6 v 21). Henry Heinz’s greatest treasure in the all the world was Jesus Christ. What is motivating you as we move forward into a New Year? What are you living for? How about living for Jesus above all us? A very happy New Year to you all, Greg Frost

Energy On Tap Limited - Three things to consider before installing PV In recent weeks I have had a number of phone calls from people confused by claims made by companies promoting solar PV. Solar PV is an excellent investment and has many benefits, but it is not suitable for all properties. If you are thinking about installing a PV system then there are three things you need to consider.

Energy on Tap Limited Specialist in solar PV installations Hadleigh based, family business Fully trained, equipped and MCS accredited Committed to delivering the best possible service High levels of customer satisfaction

1. Case studies are good, but be careful. Every house is different; different energy use, different heating systems, different construction, different orientation, different household demands, etc. To find out what is actually possible for your own property you need to get an MCS accredited PV installer to survey the property. A good installer will design the best, most effective system for your property and will be able to give you an accurate ‘predicted system output’ figure showing how much electricity you will be able to generate. remember - EVERY PROPERTY IS DIFFERENT. 2. Do your research. Speaking to more installers will educate you as to what is possible and will allow you to spot when one particular installer is making exaggerated claims or proposals. Remember, the system should be designed and installed to benefit the house not the PV company. If a PV installation will not benefit the property then the installer should be honest. GET MORE THAN ONE QUOTE. 3. Ask the installer for a reference or better still ask to visit a recent installation in the local area. This will not be a problem for a good company who pride themselves on giving a good service. Energy on Tap Limited have completed many installs in the Hadleigh and surrounding area and would be happy to take potential clients on a tour. The majority of our business is generated by ‘word of mouth’. ASK FOR REFERENCES. Finally I met an Energy Assessor the other day who has inspected hundreds of houses all over the country. He told me that the one thing PV system owners always say is “I wish I had done it sooner”.

The Suffolk Preservation Society’s Festive Celebration On Friday November 29th Hadleigh’s magnificent Old Town Hall provided the perfect setting for an evening of festive entertainment for members and friends of the Suffolk Preservation Society. Celebrating One Year of SMART MASSAGE! Wow, 2013 went really fast! So, I would like to take a moment to say a big thank you to all of my lovely customers that have made the first year of SMART MASSAGE at Kersey Mill such a success. I am so pleased with how this year has gone and have enjoyed working with every one of you to help relieve your bodily aches, pains and issues. I am also really flattered that many of you have recommended me to your friends and family - I really appreciate your positive words and recommendations. The bad news in all this is that my Tuesday clinic is now often full two to three weeks in advance! However, I am excited to announce that as of Friday 10th January 2014, I will be offering a second weekly clinic at Health and Fitness at Kersey Mill on Fridays, 9.30am - 1.30pm. This will allow me to take on even more wonderful clients, reduce waiting times for spaces and offer you more flexibility on when you have your massage. I really want to stress that sports massage is not just for 'sports people' but for anyone that experiences tight and sore muscles, general aches and pains or is recovering from an injury. My clients vary widely in age, background and fitness - and all have been pleased with the benefits of sports massage! Puddle Ducks Baby Swimming Tips – Face your Fear of Water For most new parents, the idea of taking their baby swimming for the first time is both exhilarating and daunting. Thoughts about safety, timing and practicalities run through your head. But what about if you are scared of the water yourself? In Puddle Ducks we know that to take a baby swimming when you are nervous in the water yourself is a much more daunting, and rather less exhilarating, experience. Many parents are frightened of the water themselves, perhaps because of an incident which occurred when they were children, or perhaps because they never learnt to swim. However, these parents often have a singular determination that they will not pass on that fear to their child and are keen to start their baby swimming as soon as possible. We would like to reassure all nervous parents, that they CAN teach their children to love the water and that they may even overcome some of their own fears in the process. Here is what one Puddle Ducks customer says: “Puddle Ducks helped my confidence in the water by getting me to think about what I was doing with Kirsty, which took my mind off my own nervousness. Over time that nervousness subsided to a point where I really enjoy swimming with Kirsty. Puddle Ducks has not only helped my daughter to learn to swim but also helped me to start regaining my own confidence in the water so I can swim with her” – Sandra Doherty. The most important thing is to not try to do this alone. Find a supportive swim school that understands your needs as well as your child. Good swim schools will always ask you when you enrol, whether you are confident in the water and whether you can swim. Their teachers will know how to support you, both physically and emotionally, in the water. Telephone 01473 356222 www.puddleducks.com/suffolk

Come Come on in, the water’s water’s lovely! Join our family of Puddle Ducks and enjoy baby and pre-school pre-school swimming with the most caring and highly-trained teachers around.

Our property team can work with you for a smooth and quick sale The local property market is buoyant once again and the property team at Gotelee is reflecting on a busy 2013 and looking forward to a bright and busy 2014. Catherine Abbott, Head of Property at Gotelee, comments “There is a lot to look forward to in 2014 with lower fees for Land Registry applications being announced, a consolidated approach from a number of lenders to panel memberships and so on. We never sit still in residential conveyancing these days, there’s always change and change for the better in most cases”. We have already seen growth in the number of clients that we have helped move into their new homes, covering the full spectrum from first time buyer through to the seasoned home owner, and we expect this trend to continue well into 2014. We are happy to see a significant increase in first time buyer clients as they are the key to getting the whole market moving. We understand that buying your first home is an exciting time but also that it can be a testing time for buyers. One of the biggest issues is whether you can afford to take the plunge. We have recognised this and Gotelee are running a competition on Facebook through to the end of February 2014. If you are successful in the competition, the prize is £500 off your professional conveyancing costs. As the New Year starts we can but look back with satisfaction at all that we – as a team – have achieved towards the restoration of the mill and the maltings. The support has been great throughout so we look forward to it continuing in 2014 and beyond. We have had the wheel turning for the first time in decades, new and restored paddles to be fitted during 2014, reinstatement of the force shute and some very happy stories of life at the mill. Some have been sad yet all bring to life the history of this great building. The wildlife has not been missing out either with the Kestrels nesting high above the main entrance, water voles making a home in the banks of the river whilst yet another family of Swans have grown up on the river and meadow. As the thought of going to the gym may not inspire many after the large amounts of food, drink and chocolate over Christmas and the New Year we do wonder what the two sisters who lived, played – alas one perished here – would have thought of the Santa’s Workshop created in the mill?

The event was enjoyed by so many children thrilled to be able to help Father Christmas make sure that all the children around the world received their gifts for Christmas. How they all laughed at the naughty Elf being told off by Father Christmas for being naughty. It was such a great event that next year Father Christmas has said that he will be back as the children (parents too) were such a helpful bunch. A very big thank you to all the volunteers and helpers at the Christmas magic event as well as the children and adults who attended the event to make it such fun and a fantastic success. We hope we were able to leave the children with as many lovely memories as they left with us. As this goes to press we are planning 2014 volunteer days so if you can spare a few hours a month please get in touch. We are also able to offer tours of the mill to groups for a donation towards the restoration - not forgetting the £50 that can buy a tooth in your name or that of a loved one. A big thank you from all at t’mill. allanscottdavies@hotmail.co.uk

Porch Project Community Event On Tuesday the 17th of December The Porch Project teamed up with Prepare2Cook to host a community event. Over the last few months Angela Gregg from Prepare2Cook has been at The Porch Project on Tuesday evenings teaching young people how to cook a variety of simple yet delicious meals. In order to give the community the opportunity to sample this cooking and see the talent of the young people, we decided to do a Soup Kitchen event. Around 100 people came to St Mary’s church where they had homemade soup and bread, met with friends and had their nails painted whilst being entertained by talented local musicians. Two batches of soup and the bread were made before the event and another soup was made on the evening so the young people could demonstrate their skills. The musical entertainment was provided by young people of Hadleigh, including Jess Simmons, Nuclear Winter, Luke Thorley and Josh Newton. Several of these songs were written by the young people themselves. People of all ages came to the event and a good time was had by all. Many were impressed with the talent of our local young people and no one left without a smile on their face. One person commented ‘It’s great to see the church buzzing with people’. We would like to thank everyone who was involved and came to the event – it wouldn’t have been such a success without you! If you would like to find out more about the Porch Project or become a volunteer please email youthworkco@porchproject.co.uk To find out more about Prepare2Cook email Angela Gregg: prepare2cook@gmail.com

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Report of the Hadleigh Town Council meeting held on the 21st November 2013 Present: Councillors Lazenby (Town Mayor), Angland, Byrne, Cook, Free, Grutchfield, Matthews, L Munson, M Munson Nevard, Sheldrick Welsh and Whiting In attendance: PC Matt Paisley (Suffolk Constabulary), one member of the press, Councillors Grandon (Babergh District Councillor) and Riley (County and District Councillors). APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Amin and Haylock. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interest. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Town Council held on the 17th October 2013 were taken as read and were confirmed and signed. MATTERS ARISING Matters Arising – Reports of the County and District Councillors. Councillor Cook confirmed that no response had been received from Babergh District Council on the subject of polling stations. Town Matters Councillor Cook requested the four District Councillors to take up the issue raised in the letter handed to Christine Thurlow on the matter of cleaning up areas within the town under the Town & Country Planning Act. Councillor M. Munson felt that this should be dealt with by the Planning Enforcement Officer. Councillor Grutchfield asked that it be minuted that he quite often requested information but did not always receive a satisfactory response. POLICING PC Paisley presented the Police Report for October and it was noted that 14 crimes had been recorded during the month of which 1 had been detected. The offences comprised as follows: 6 thefts; 3 criminal damage; 2 burglaries; 1 minor wound without intent; 1 pass counterfeit notes as genuine; 1 driving motor vehicle with excess alcohol. PC Paisley reported that Suffolk Police are carrying out a county wide initiative on crime reduction; catalytic converter marking will be taking place in December at Crockatt Garage with more dates planned for January/February 2014. The Police would be visiting shops to offer advice on shoplifting and also increasing licencing visits in the run up to Christmas. Over 6% of all crimes reported take place on the industrial estate and the Police would be working with the businesses over the next few months on crime reduction. Councillor Grutchfield was concerned that residents did not report minor crimes and should be encouraged to do so. He hoped that strong action was taken regarding serious incidents in Ipswich and would be interested to receive statistics on violent crimes. Councillor Sheldrick reported on the work of the Community Speedwatch Team especially in the Gallows Hill area of the town. He requested clearer signage in this area. The police have issued nine speeding tickets in this area. REPORTS OF THE COUNTY AND DISTRICT COUNCILLORS Written reports had been received from Councillors Grandon, M. Munson and Riley. Councillor Grutchfield advised that he was unable to provide a report as he had not been invited to attend any District Council meetings since the last Town Council meeting. Councillor M. Munson advised that she had attended a Housing Board Meeting this afternoon. Councillor Cook commented on information received by Councillor Lazenby regarding the discretionary grant relating to the bedroom tax Babergh District Council had received and why only 40% of the grant had been spent leaving 60% still to be allocated. Councillor Lazenby would be interested to know the number of applicants that had received assistance. Councillor Riley advised that he would be unable to attend this year’s Christmas Lighting Up Event on Sunday 1st December but congratulated Hadleigh Town Council on booking Griff Rhys Jones to switch on the lights and thanked all those involved in organising the event. Councillor Cook asked Councillor Riley about the last paragraph in his report which reported on the setting up of a Hadleigh Steering Group and was disappointed that there were only two Town Councillors to be invited to attend. Councillor Lazenby requested that the Town Clerk be invited to attend and be a part of this Steering Group. Councillor Cook advised that Hadleigh Town Council had met informally to discuss their position regarding the District Councils forthcoming review and a letter had been sent to the Chief Executive. Councillor Angland asked Councillor Riley what kind of controlled crossing was envisaged for Ann Beaumont Way/Bridge Street and was advised that this would depend on available funds. Councillor Byrne advised that in the past a footbridge over the river had been considered and that if Babergh had plans for the land opposite Morrisons this might be a cheaper alternative. She also thanked Councillor Riley for the photographic evidence he had taken of problem areas in the town and which he kindly passed on to Hadleigh Archives.

HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL Full Council Meetings: Date of Next Meetings at 7.30pm Thursday 16th January 2014 Thursday 20th February 2014 Planning Committee Date of Next Meetings at 7.00pm Thursday 16th January 2014 Date of Next Meeting at 7.30pm Thursday 13th February 2014 22

Councillor Sheldrick raised the matter of the footpath at Freeman Close advising that he had met with Suffolk County Council to discuss the increased use of this footpath following the opening of the Morrisons Supermarket. It was felt that this could be discussed in more detail if a planning application was received from Morrisons on future development of the site. The Clerk was requested to investigate who owned this piece of land. MAYOR’S COMMUNICATIONS The Mayor felt that the turn out by Councillors at the recent Remembrance Day Service had been disappointing but thanked those who had attended. He particularly thanked Councillor Whiting for laying the Babergh District Council wreath as there was no representative attending from that Council. The Clerk reported a letter received from Babergh District Council that the Chief Executive wanted to meet with the Town Clerk to discuss Hadleigh Town Council’s review input. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £30,506.55 be approved for payment. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 24th October 2013 was noted. Councillor Cook, Chair of Planning, advised that four mulberry trees would be planted in St. Mary’s Churchyard to replace the Rowan trees and asked if a response had been received from Tim Yeo. She was advised that to date none had been received. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 7th November 2013 was received and accepted including the recommendation to provide a £500 grant to 4YP under the General Power of Competence. ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 7th November 2013 was received and accepted. BUDGET REPORT The Clerk presented a budget report up to the end of August and advised that income and expenditure was on track. However next year’s precept would see Hadleigh Town Council lose 25% of the grant which equates to an increase of 2% to each household to keep the precept at its current level. This option and all others will be taken into account by the Finance Committee when making its recommendations. BUDGET BIDS The Clerk reported on budget bids already received: Environment & General Purposes Committee requested £2,000 towards town promotion. Sports & Open Spaces Committee requested £10,000 for fencing at Corks Lane play area. The Town Clerk advised that quotations were being obtained but she anticipated requiring £30,000 towards rabbit fencing the new cemetery land once it has been purchased. TOWN MATTERS The Town Clerk reported a meeting with Babergh District Council officers regarding their proposals for new equipment for the skate park on Pykenham Park. They are working with a group of young people who need to raise in the region of £100,000. Babergh District Council would own the land and lease it to Hadleigh Town Council in name only for a peppercorn rent of £1.00 per year this would enable the group to make funding bids with Hadleigh Town Council as their backer. Councillor Byrne reported that she had attended the meeting and it had been made clear that there would be no costs except the peppercorn rent. Councillor Cook recommended that this proposal be approved. Voting was unanimous. Councillor Angland reported that the scheme to put pylons across the valley has been put on hold. If the scheme is not needed by 2017 it will not be needed until the 2020s. It was always felt the scheme is too early. Community Forum meetings will continue and she will continue to report to Council. She wondered how much the consultation had cost National Grid. There being no further business the meeting closed at 8.43pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) - Town Clerk Report of the Planning Committee Meeting held on the 21st November 2013 Present: Councillors: Cook (Chair), Angland, Byrne, Free, Lazenby, L. Munson, Nevard, Sheldrick, Welsh and Whiting None attendee: Councillor Matthews APOLOGIES FOR ABSENCE Apologies were received from Councillors Amin and Haylock. These apologies were accepted. DECLARATIONS OF INTEREST There were no declarations of interests. MINUTES The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 24th October 2013 were confirmed as a correct record and signed. MATTERS ARISING Matters Arising – St. Mary’s Church Yard The Chair reported that the removed Rowan trees would be replaced with four Mulberry Trees. The siting of the trees would be agreed with the Dean and the time to plant would be agreed with the Contractor. Town and Country Planning – B/13/01182/FHA – 78 Benton Street Hadleigh Town Council had felt unable to comment on this application due to the lack of a Design & Access Statement. Babergh District Council had confirmed that the application did not require one and they considered that the plans were acceptable although not of the best quality. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee considered the applications for Planning Consent, details of which are listed below and upon which the following decisions were reached:B/13/01087/FUL Land east of 4 Lady Lane, Erection of 1 no. detached twostorey dwelling. Construction of new vehicular access. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous)

B/13/01223/LBC 2 Station Road, Application for Listed Building Consent – Insertion of boiler flue to roof of existing utility room. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/13/01209/OUT Land west of 39 Aldham Road, Erection of 2 no. semidetached two-storey dwellings and replacement single detached garage and driveway for 39 Aldham Road. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/13/01210/FUL Compass Specialist Services, Unit 1 Hill Farm, Pond Hall Rd Alterations to existing vehicular access. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/13/01233/FHA Red House, Pound Lane, Hadleigh, Alterations to front boundary comprising of New boundary wall 1.4m high; Erection of integral bin store; Replacement of pedestrian gate; New vehicular gate; Erection of gate in front wall. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/13/01278/TCA Health Centre, Market Place, Various tree works including fell Robinia and Ash. This application was noted. Additional Applications: B/13/01302/LBC 113 Angel Street, Application for Listed Building Consent – Insertion of two gallows brackets into front porch. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/13/01304/FHA 44 Yeoman Way, Erection of two-storey rear extension. Approval was recommended (Voting was unanimous) B/13/01314/TPO 3 Bradfield Avenue, Clearing of 1 no. Walnut tree following storm, covered by Tree Preservation Order BT163. The work had already been carried out – no decision was required. B/13/01266/ADV 53 High Street, Application for Advertisement Consent – Retention of 1 no. non-illuminated fascia sign, 2 no. non-illuminated hanging signs and 1 no. non-illuminated logo sign. Refusal was recommended (Voting was unanimous). On the grounds that there are too many signs in the windows which is not in keeping with the rest of the High Street; one hanging sign would be sufficient for a shop this size; the hanging signs are too low, especially the one nearest to the door which for anyone over 6ft.3ins tall could cause a very nasty accident. TOWN AND COUNTRY PLANNING The Committee noted the Schedule of Decisions of the Local Planning Authority. Regarding 15 Dunton Grove although Hadleigh Town Council refused the application and Babergh District Council granted the application Councillor Angland, who had attended the site visit, was pleased to see that one of the conditions to the development was that three number on-site garage/parking spaces shall be retained for the parking of vehicles in connection with the property and used for no other purpose. ANY OTHER RELEVANT BUSINESS The Chair drew the Committee’s attention to the noticeboard recently sited on the side of Adnams shop. The Clerk reported that the map inside is produced by Codair and she had spoken with the Company a few years ago about the best position in the town to site the noticeboard. The noticeboard had initially been sited on Jasmine House Takeaway but had to be removed due to planning permission being required. The Clerk was asked to ascertain if planning permission was required for the current site at Adnams. The Chair reported on three items of interest which had been reported in the Civic Voice newsletter: i) They welcomed the announcement that four councils have been granted a judicial review to challenge the government’s decision to allow developers free rein to convert offices into flats without the need for planning permission. ii) The Planning Minister Nick Boles has let lapse a measure - introduced in 2008 when builders were hit by the financial crisis – which allowed three-year permissions to be easily extended. iii) The Civic Voice welcomed the announcement that the Department for Communities and Local Government Select Committee is to undertake a review of the National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF). Clive Betts, MP, Chairman of the Committee, has announced that it will undertake the review in 2014 to see how the framework is working two years after implementation. It was reported that no reply had been received to the letter handed to Christine Thurlow of Babergh District Council at the last meeting regarding the motion taken at the Town Council meeting to use the Town and Country Planning Act to clear up unkempt areas in the town. The Chair reported that a resident had contacted her regarding the state of Castle Road near Friars Lane. The Clerk was asked to contact Suffolk County Council to ascertain, in the first instance, as to why the road is unadopted. There being no further business the meeting closed at 7.15pm. Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) – Town Clerk

Xmas Tree Helpers Andy and Brian arrived at 8 am ready with chainsaw to shape Christmas Tree trunk bases to fit into the brackets on the High Street shops and businesses. However, greeted by trees all very neatly packaged in nets took us by surprise; after a quick trip home to acquire scissors to remove the nets, which delayed our normal start time, we were ready to join the rest of the "team" after their Huffer's breakfast. Alas, on arrival there, no team had put in an appearance (due to a mix-up with dates). Our hearts sunk as the thought of not finishing the erection and decorating of each High Street tree with lights, in time for a most welcome lunchtime beverage and sandwich, would result in a very long day for the six of us (Andy and Cherry, Brian and Sarah, Glenn and Neil Kennington). But very grateful thanks to Neil who promptly contacted Micaela, who very kindly facebooked her contacts, which resulted in the appearance of, and much appreciated help from Ted, Joey and Colin. A quick phone call to Charlie and we were very grateful for your help and Cherry, who accosted the parents of Joe in the High Street, who in turn, roused him from his bed to come and help us (beyond the call of duty!). To all of you spontaneous helpers, we are so very grateful for you turning out at a moment's notice to make the High Street look so wonderful at Christmas time. To this end, we would like to give our very grateful thanks to all our helpers, shopkeepers and businesses who have worked together to make Hadleigh High Street (and the Eight Bells) achieve the most wonderful display of Christmas Trees. Our helpers who gave up their Saturday to help erect and decorate the trees with lights: Colin Brown, Joe Colcombe, Charlie Dawson, Andy and Cherry Forbes, Joey Gilder, Neil Kennington, Tadeusz Kobiela (Ted the Pole "Tadpole"), Brian and Sarah Loftus and Glenn Root. Mike Ager (Kings Head) and Kenny McGhee (Grass to Glass) loaned their ladders and Phil Taylor (Brett Valley Maintenance Services Ltd) for the loan of his truck. And don't forget ..... what goes up must come down ..... so, if anybody is available on Saturday 4 January to help with taking down the Xmas trees, we would be most grateful for all your help - please meet behind the King's Head at 9.30 am.

Towards the Deep End This column goes to the printer on the 19th of the month, so it is somewhat surreal to be discussing January before Christmas has run its course. The County Council ended 2013 by revealing ambitious ideas for promoting our well being. We have signed up for the Greater Ipswich City Deal which aims to make Suffolk more prosperous. The projects include: • Supporting 3,500 young people into work. • Increasing local private and public investment in skills by at least £10 million. • Creating 5,000 new apprenticeships by 2019. • Creating 3,000 additional high value jobs and 400 new businesses across Suffolk and Norfolk. • Developing a highly skilled local workforce The Greater Ipswich area incorporates the borough of Ipswich and districts of Suffolk Coastal, Mid Suffolk and Babergh). Greater Ipswich is currently worth over £8 billion a year to the national economy - with potential to grow by 20% by 2019. It is central to the prosperity of East Anglia, providing 259,600 jobs, hosting 19,730 trading businesses and has 82% of its working age population economically active. Meanwhile 20 internship placements are available in councils across Suffolk starting this Summer. Interested parties need to get their applications in by Tuesday 28 January. The internship programme is designed to encourage young people to take up careers in the public sector . Full details can be found on http://www.risinghighsuffolk.org.uk. I recently attended a workshop focussing on being a Corporate Parent. (The County has responsibility for young persons, not just those in education but also those in care and being fostered). I never cease to be amazed at the commitment of the staff at Endeavour House to ensure that our Corporate Children are not written off – but for every success story, there is always more to be done. The County Council are proud of their success in placing children with adoptive families. In the last three years, they have placed 180 children from the ages of just a few months old to eight years. Laudable as this is, it is not enough and whilst the County has assessed and approved more than a hundred enthusiastic and loving families across the county they always need more. The County is holding information meetings in January and February – details can be found from the Care and Fostering Unit at County or give me a call and I’ll try and send you in the right direction. Closer to home, we have a success story on our own door step. The Porch Project has rapidly grown since its founding in 2009 and now has over 350 young people taking part. It has become one of the leading youth projects in Suffolk. It caters for the physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing and education of young people (aged between 11 and 20), who live locally. It provides premises, hospitality, counselling, education, recreation, and other facilities. It is not just about keeping young people off the streets. It helps them develop confidence and team spirit. I always find it a pleasure to drop in on the Porch and see how comfortable they seem within themselves. Next year’s ambitions include helping our young people become more interview and job ready. It was my privilege to donate £1,000 from the Community Budget to foster the Porch’s well being. Ebony’s Blog My life at The Shelley Centre My system clock, being a mechanical horse, tells me it’s a new year, 2014……a blank canvas waits! So, a time perhaps to reflect on last year and those who get least mention, our team of Fund Raisers. They work very hard handling a duel function of Helper and Fund Raiser. Whilst they spend a considerable amount of time talking with present and future sponsors and liaising with donors, they also organise specific events which include The Countryside Walk, 52 walkers took part; our stall at The Hadleigh Show; The Long Distance Ride with a record 104 riders taking part; a Quiz Night which was attended by some 100 people who also enjoyed a Fish ‘n Chip Supper. From these events alone The Centre raised over £7,300 toward its upkeep. Furthermore, two Super Market Chains namely, The East of England Co-op and Waitrose have also supported us with in-store token schemes raising in excess of £2,700. We were also fortunate to secure sums from two other major sponsors who were AXA Insurance via the Suffolk Community Foundation which provided a Grant enabling us to purchase much needed equipment such as riding helmets and special saddles: again, Suffolk County Council via the Suffolk Community Foundation awarded The Centre a ‘Working Together’ Grant of £10,000 which has gone toward meeting the cost of our Stable Manger’s Salary. Obviously, we are also very grateful to receive individual donations of which there are many and bequests. However, there is generosity through individuals and Guy Brooks, a parent of one of our Riders, Mia, took part in the gruelling Kindrochit Quadrathon in Scotland which resulted in a donation of £6,559.87, which must have involved much hard work in training and preparation for such an event. And finally, in summarising our Fund Raising it is important to mention, and thank, the parents of Michael Jordan from Acorn Village who made a donation to Sponsor a Pony in memory of Michael who, sadly, died suddenly last Autumn; he is greatly missed by his friends of the Wednesday morning group with whom he rode for some 15 years. If you would like to support us why not look up the Events Calendar for 2014 on our Website and note the dates in your Diary now! Well, for me and BABS it’s back to work, with our services more in demand at this time of year: I suspect our Fund Raisers also have their heads down rising to the challenge of funding The Shelley Centre for another year. Case Study, Mr Dave Melton - Firetrace Ltd We hope that everyone has had a very merry Christmas and New Year. This month our article will look at two other types of customer; the commercial customer, and the landlord. Our case study for this month is Mr Dave Melton, and his business Firetrace Ltd, which is situated on Knightsdale Road in Ipswich. Dave has had a 10kw system - 42 Solar panels - installed by us on his business premises, and subsequently has had us Greenscape Energy installation at install systems at several homes Firetrace Ltd, which is situated on that he rents out around the Knightsdale Road in Ipswich. Ipswich area. Dave told us that he had been looking at Solar for a little while, and had been contemplating having it installed on his business premises. After meeting with us, and having us go through the various benefits of it with him, he decided that it was most definitely worth investing in, as the returns on Solar outperformed any savings account or ISA, in any bank in the UK at the time. Dave’s business, Firetrace Ltd, is quite a heavy user of Electricity, as on top of the constant lighting required on the premises and the air conditioning for the offices, they have a number of larger pieces of engineering machinery that are expensive to run, but essential to the business. In Dave’s own words “There isn’t a day that goes by where we don’t consume more than the Solar panels generate”, such is the cost of running a modern business. In fact the only day where any electricity generated is being fed back into the National Grid is Sunday, as the business is closed, and even then the staff put whatever battery powered electrical equipment they have on charge for a day! In short, Dave has maximised the savings on his electricity bills for his business, by using nearly 100% of the power his system generates. This is of course on top of the income he receives from the Feed-In Tariff. From a commercial point of view, this is the perfect scenario. If a family install a system on their home, they will struggle to use even three quarters of the power that they generate, yet if a business that is a heavy electricity user can not only add an additional income stream in the form of the Feed-In Tariff, but can also use 90-100% of whatever their system generates, then they have

considerably reduced their overheads, something all businesses are constantly reviewing. In summary, a Solar PV system installed on business premises can be a very lucrative prospect indeed. As we mentioned earlier, Dave has also had us install Solar PV systems on several homes he owns and rents out around the Ipswich area. As the owner of the house, Dave will still receive the Feed-In Tariff payments for each property, meaning that as a landlord he now has an additional income on top of the rent payments to help cover any maintenance costs etc. The tenants living in the properties receive the free electricity. Dave told us that in his experience, this made his tenants very happy as they were paying quite a bit less than other people in terms of utility bills, and also that he found it made properties considerably easier to rent in the first place, as potential tenants were very interested in the fact that the house had Solar panels. This ties in with a survey conducted by Martin Lewis, and his website www.moneysavingexpert.com, who discovered that homes with Solar panels receive a third more views than homes without panels, when on the market. Again this is logical, as a home with Solar panels has an income attached to it for a number of years, and will be considerably cheaper to run than a home without Solar, and this gap will only grow as the Energy prices continue to go up. If you would like to find out more about Solar, for us to advise you on what the best Solar solution could be for your home, or to simply get some further information and a free, no-obligation quotation, please get in touch with our friendly team today, we’ll be more than happy To find out more please call 01473 655655 www.greenscapeenergy.co.uk

Hadleigh High A Specialist Science School High Lands Road, Hadleigh Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 5HU Headteacher: Caroline Gibson Telephone: 01473 823496 E-mail: office@hadleighhigh.net Website: www.hadleighhigh.net December has been a very busy month for our school. Year 11 pupils have been taking their mock GCSE examinations, and pupils in Year 9 and 10 have also had examinations preparing them for the rigors of Key Stage 4 and developing strong revision skills. On a lighter note, pupils of all ages have been rehearsing and performing in our Christmas concert and talent competitions which we have thoroughly enjoyed, fundraising and excelling in sports. I am grateful to our pupil news team for all the contributions below. A friend in need is a friend indeed Zoe Lewis, a former pupil of Hadleigh High, is involved with an organisation called Lattitude. Lattitude encourages 18-25 year olds to volunteer overseas and help people in poverty. Zoe plans to be undertaking voluntary work in Ghana to help primary and secondary school students learn about different health aspects which will be taught in a fun and encouraging way. She found the organisation through online research. She stated “It stood out to me because it is good experience, will stand me in good stead in the future but also will help those who are less fortunate than us.” Zoe took part in a training course on the 7th-11th of December participating in group activities and also had the chance to meet the other volunteers and the team leaders; it was also a time to find out more about the program itself. One aspect of the programme is that you find the money to fund yourself so good luck to Zoe in doing so. If you are interested in this area of work you can read more by looking at the website on www.lattitude.org.uk. Years 12s are back for more On Thursday 5th December, the former Years 11 pupils returned briefly to the school to receive their GCSE certificates. They were first spoken to by Mrs Gibson, who welcomed them back after their absence. They then had an inspirational talk from a teacher at Suffolk New College, who spoke about the modern day approaches to work, and which everybody found very interesting. This was followed by a presentation of certificates by the Chair of Governors Mike Quinn. Afterwards, refreshments were held in the dining room, allowing teachers, pupils and parents a chance to catch up and discuss how Year 12 were progressing with their studies. During this evening, everyone had the pleasure of listening to Harry Planck and Jonah Beadle perform ‘Payphone’ which was a real treat. Miss. Brown, former Head of Year 11, expressed her views on the evening, saying: “It was lovely to see all the students again and see how much they had matured in the 5 months since they left.” Suffolk Cross Country There were some excellent performances for Hadleigh students in the Suffolk Cross Country Championships at RHS on Saturday 7th December. Pride of place goes to Alex Baxter who was an impressive winner of the Junior Boy’s event. Other results are as follows: Junior Boys - Ewan Baxter 7th, Ellis Girling 67th, Rio Simpson 79th; Junior Girls - Nadia Johnson 48th ; Junior Boys - Harvey Clements 13th, Felix Vardon-Barber 20th, Adam Morsman 44th and Daniel Squirrell 46th; Inter Girls - Natasha Downie 32nd; Inter Boys - Anthony Pearce 2nd, Daniel Storrer 14th, James Rooks 48th With the first 15 in each age group potentially being selected for the Suffolk team, if our runners can perform to the same standard in the last trial event to be staged at Culford on Thursday 16th January 2014, first event at 11:00am, we could be looking at 4 of our students being selected to represent Suffolk in the Eastern Counties Championships in February. Parents are invited to make their own way to the event and the race times are listed below. Culford’s phone number is 01284 728615.

The organizer, pupil leader Evan White, said “It is the first of many new competitions that will be inter house. This singing competition featured two acts from each house and went astoundingly well.” Entries included Ellen Clarke and Harry Planck, Libby Corrie, Emma Knock and Harriet Godber, Jess Simmons, Eliza Bennett and Amarlia Thomson. The winner will be announced during the end of term assembly. Assessment for all! Much of the school has spent the last two weeks taking park in various tests and mock exams. The Year 10s and 11s in particular have had the pressure on these last couple of weeks and have had to keep their brains in gear constantly! Chloe Read (10T) tells us, “Taking part in the mock exams helps to prepare us for the final exams that will take place in Year 11.” Amarlia Thomson (10O) says, “Having mock exams to take part in is good, it gives us a real taste for the future, and helps us not to worry too much when the real ones come around.” The Year 9s have also had to knuckle down with Science mocks to keep them on their toes. Year 9 students Emma Chapman and Lily Crisp both agree that, “The science mock exams were easy to get through as we had covered a lot of the questions previously, in preparation for and building up to the mock exam.” These exam results have left the Year 9s more confident for the future. Good luck to all of the students at Hadleigh High that have taken part in the exams. We wish them well. Coats n’ Coppers! The Year 8s at Hadleigh High School have been raising money and awareness for Age UK. Mrs Thomas (supervising the campaign) said, “We chose Age UK with Coats and Coppers because it is a fun way to raise a lot of supplies that will make a huge difference to older people this winter but will mean more people will be able to give and help the charity.” Coats and coppers is an innovative way to encourage students into giving their old coats and loose change to our collection point where we will send off all the proceeds to Age UK. All the Year 8 pupils have been fantastic but a particular student, Antonia Marks, has been particularly enthusiastic about the campaign. She said to us, “I am really sympathetic to the cause as it shows how we can help people in the UK who are suffering. I just imagine it could be my grandma.” Antonia has been raising both money and awareness but also organising fundraisers and cake sales to try and further support the charity. Coats and Coppers is part of a Age UK campaign, if you wish to help please visit www.ageuk.co.uk. Thank you for all your support! A smashing start in the sports field! Rugby – Every year has seen some wins this year but the major event was the Year 8s getting through to the semi-final of the South England rugby league. They will either be playing North London or Hertfordshire. Girls Football – The U14s won their quarter final match 9-0 in the County Cup and are through to the semi-finals in the New Year. They will be playing against Sir John Leman School. Good luck to them. Netball – This year there has been a very mixed bag of results for all years, with every year group endeavouring to play their best. All years have won some of their matches, with exceptional performances by the Year 11s who haven’t yet failed to win a match. Miss Brown, netball coach, says: “There have been some very pleasing results, and I am looking forward to the New Year and the rest of the season”. Results: Year 7 lost 13-0 to East Bergholt, with ‘Player of the match’ being Jodie Barrett, but having conceded this match managed to up their game and beat Ormiston Endeavour 15-1, rewarding Eliza Bennett as ‘Player of

the match’. Year 8 drew against Ormiston Endeavour, who voted Maddie Chisnall as ‘Player of the match’. Year 9 won their area tournament, but then unfortunately lost to Coppleston 6-4, with an outstanding performance in defence from Elske Kelly rewarding her as ‘Player of the match’. Year 10 won against Kesgrave, with great sportsmanship from Abi Simspon who later became ‘Player of the match’, but then they lost against Ipswich School, who had fantastic players and were very skilful. They made a valiant effort and Ellen Seeley was voted ‘Player of the match’. Year 11 beat East Bergholt 2014, with ‘Player of the match’ going to Annabel MacFarlane, and they also played against Ormiston Endeavour, and although the match was tight from the start, Hadleigh managed to pull back and win the match 10-9, again ‘Player of the match’ going to Annabel MacFarlane. Well done to all of the netball teams! Hadleigh Choral Society Concert To celebrate Christmas, Hadleigh High School is known for participating in many different events in the community. Only recently a small group of pupils were asked to take part in the Hadleigh Choral Society Concert where Year 10s and our African drummers took to the stage. Music teacher, Mr Hellewell said, “I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in the concert. It was well received by all.” Year 10 pupil Livi Player said, “It got me into the Christmas spirit and everyone was very friendly as well.” While another Year 10 pupil, Abi Simpson said, “It got me in a really Christmassy mood and I really enjoyed it. Everyone was really welcoming and it was a great success.” We would like to thank the Hadleigh Choral Society for having us take part in their concert; it was a really enjoyable and lovely evening. Jingle Bells, Jingle Bells, Jingle All The Way As the end of term jerked closer and closer our traditional Winter Concert took place. Head of Music, Miss Macey said, “The annual concert was a huge success featuring pupils from all year groups. This year we saw an increase in pupil lead ensembles including string group and flute choir as well as a range of bands and soloists. A fun, festive evening was had by all.” Mr Hellewell also said, “Thank you to everyone who took part in our concert. We were very impressed by the amount of talent and professionalism from the pupils.” We would like to say a big thank you to everyone involved and especially to our music teachers, Miss Macey and Mr Hellewell for helping to create such a wonderful evening. Bang goes the theory Recently, a group of 27 Year 11 pupils went to Northgate High School to have an experience of A Level science lessons. The purpose was to try and encourage the top students to take Science further than High School. They were able to meet and talk to some students currently working on the course. It was a huge success and pupils were very eager to carry on science in the future. Moreover, on the 25th and 26th November, some Year 11 students were chosen to visit London. On the first day they went to the National History Museum, they then stayed overnight and on the Tuesday they visited the Piccadilly Theatre to experience a lecture from Professor Brian Cox, a Chemist, Andrea Seller, and a Biologist, Simon Watts. Miss Blyth, the science teacher who organised the trip, said: “I really loved it and I thought it was amazing. Two students asked Professor Brian Cox questions and we got really good feedback, as well as focusing on things we don’t do in school.” Taylor McCarthy, a pupil who attended the trip claims, “I asked Brian about the particle reactor and if he was ever worried it would get out of control to which he then explained why there was no danger involved. Although I enjoyed all of the lecture, the biologist was definitely my favourite.” And the winner is... The HAD award is new this year, and it encourages all of the pupils to work their hardest to try and accomplish different things to receive the award. It involves 2 pupils from each form in the year being chosen by their form tutors to have an afternoon of watching films or having a party. This will be happening every term to give every pupil an equal chance of receiving the award. We hope everyone who was chosen had a great time and good luck to everyone in the future.

Partners in time Recently our Year 10 French class have been corresponding with a school in France. They have exchanged videos of each class speaking bits about themselves. Ellen Seeley, French GCSE student, says “I think it is a really good idea as we get to learn from the mistakes made and we can understand more of the French culture that is helpful when learning French.” It is a great experience for both classes as it will advance their language skills with our French class are eagerly awaiting the response of our partner school. I think I had an Art Attack! Year 11 Art Mocks: The Year 11 students have completed their Art mock exams. The outcomes will be displayed on the ‘Artist of the Month’ page on the school website for all to see; please do take a look at their pieces! Arts and Crafts evening: The Year 11 Art prefects organised an Arts and Crafts evening for parents and students. The evening was spent creating Christmas inspired crafts in preparation for Christmas. Robo cup Recently, the Year 9’s went on a school trip to BT. Once they were there, they were taught about how programming and robots were used in war zones. They were then shown how to use the programs and how it would be used in action. Matt Smith, a Year 9 who particularly enjoyed the events of the day, said “It was cool and very enjoyable and I loved the competition element of designing the robots especially as the team from Hadleigh came second.” All the Year 9’s thoroughly enjoyed the day and were shown that all jobs can be fun! Thank you A big thank you from all the school to Chloe and Molly 11D who stepped up to be last minute House Prefects for Duncan, D couldn’t have done it without you! We hope everybody had a great Christmas and wish you well in the New Year. Sorry! News from St Mary’s Primary School We are really proud of our Year 6 rugby team! Recently, they represented the Hadleigh pyramid of schools at the Westbourne Sports Partnership finals, playing against teams from across Ipswich. It was a real challenge but, thanks to great team work, St Mary’s managed to win the tournament! The next step is the county finals in 2014. We were delighted with the children’s sporting attitude and encouragement of one another. They have worked really hard and have developed great sporting skills. Thanks again to Steve and Sharon Clements for supporting the team with after-school coaching sessions. The Year 6s have set a great example to the other children in the school! Our children have enjoyed taking part in a range of workshops arranged by St Mary’s Church this term. As well as the Harvest Workshops in October, the children have participated in activities about St Edmund’s Day, Advent and, most recently, Christmas. The children in Beech and Elm classes visited St Mary’s Church and were involved in five different Christmas workshops, through which they learned about different aspects of the Christmas story. The children enjoyed this immensely and gave very thoughtful answers. I have heard very positive reports about how responsive and well-behaved the children were – they were a credit to the school! The Advent Workshop, run by Trish Pitt, was a chance for children from different schools to get together at St Mary’s Church. The children learned about the season of Advent in the Church and the Christmas story through ‘Godly Play’. Then they made Advent candles to help with the countdown to Christmas! Oak class had a lovely time at the ‘café service’ at St Mary’s. Children from St Mary’s helped to create the order of service for Friday services and our children always enjoy taking part. The values we have studied in Worship this term are ‘generosity’ and ‘perseverance’. We teach about these values through Bible stories in whole-school Worship and then children think about how they can demonstrate these values in their daily lives. Thank you to all the visitors who have supported our Worship this term, including the Very Reverend Martin Thrower, Philip Mann, Pastor Chris Todd, David and Wendy Atkins, Reverend Barbara Challis, Helen Matter, Ian Copeman and Joyce Willis. We are very grateful for all your time and we are lucky to have so many people who help us to reinforce our school’s ethos with the children. All the children have worked so hard this term. In particular, children throughout the whole school have been trying hard to get better at maths. We have been delighted to see real progress in their books as their presentation and the quality of their work has improved. It was great to see so many parents and grandparents at our recent Celebration Assembly to help us recognise the children’s achievements. Every week, we give the children certificates for producing good work, displaying good learning behaviour and for showing our Christian Values through their behaviour and relationships with others. As well as the usual certificates, our Celebration assembly was a time to find out about children’s achievements outside school. Children brought in medals, trophies, badges, certificates and photos to share. There were all sorts of achievements to celebrate, including awards for music, gymnastics, rugby, football, swimming and life-saving skills. Well done to all the children for their efforts this term. Thank you to all the members of the school community who helped to organise and run our Christmas fete this year. As always, it was a great success and

lots of money was raised for new ‘gym trail’ equipment. Without the support of so many hard-working volunteers, we would not be able to put on such lovely events for the children. There were hot dogs, Christmas craft activities, games to play, a Secret Santa gift room, books for sale, a variety of stalls and, of course, Santa’s Grotto! To open the festivities, the children sang Christmas songs and the Year 6s played their flutes. We were all very impressed with their entertaining performance! It has been an absolute delight to see our two Christmas productions this year. The Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 put on superb performances and we are very proud of them! For both shows, there were so many songs, dances and lines to learn and the children worked really hard. The children loved participating in Nativity plays and learning about the Christmas story. After the shows, many audience members told us how impressed they were. Thank you to all the parents, members of the community and staff members, who gave up their time to help with costumes, choreography and rehearsing. Lots of energy went into these performances and they were a great success. Now we have our Christmas lunch and Carol Service at the church to come - what a positive way to end the term! We wish everyone a healthy, successful 2014! See you next year!

At the end of November, Hadleigh and District RNLI held a very enjoyable evening, courtesy of the Hadleigh Bowling Club, during which we were handsomely entertained by shanty singers, The Motley Crew. Their renditions of such favourites as “What Shall We Do with the Drunken Sailor” were very well received by a capacity audience. A nourishing supper was provided by the ladies of the Hadleigh & District RNLI Committee and raffle prizes were donated by many individuals and by Suffolk Flowers at Plum Green of Hadleigh. Having enjoyed all on offer, our supporters that evening happily dipped into their pockets to boost the profits on this occasion to £1,000. Our thanks to all for making this such a successful fund-raising venture. The Hadleigh & District RNLI A.G.M. will be held at Kersey Bell on Monday 27th January at 7.30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. If anyone is interested in joining the Committee but are unable to attend the A.G.M., do please telephone John Baxter on 01206 265967, or me (Kate Bailey) on 01473 823570. Finally, as I am retiring from the RNLI Committee at the A.G.M., I would like to express my thanks to all who have supported the RNLI during the years I have held office, both individuals and businesses in the Hadleigh area. In particular my thanks go to Mark David of The Cooking Experience, Cyndy Hilton of Priory Hall, Andrews Butchers, Hollow Trees Farm Shop, Charles Partridge (formerly of Partridges Farm Shop), Suffolk Flowers and Plum Green, Adnams Cellars, Keith Avis Newsagents, Hadleigh Co-op, Hadleigh Thrift Shop, Tina and Butch of the market stall, Colchester Wines, and all businesses that have so willingly displayed our posters over the years. I shall of course continue to support the RNLI and trust you too will be able to carry on supporting our heroic crews who battle to save lives at sea. Kate Bailey, Chairman

Thank You Just a word of thanks to all the people that supported us in our fund raising efforts to provide a clean water supply for the Kitty Upper Basic School in the Gambia. We have just returned from the Gambia and we are happy to say that the school with your help now has its own clean water supply, so on behalf of everybody at the school THANK YOU

Our 6th birthday was celebrated in some style on November 9 at Offton’s village hall. Musician and dance teacher Stefan Freedman, who teaches worldwide, called the dances which this year had a Breton style to them, helped by musicians Vicky and Anthony. OBee member Sue Reynard made a very tasty courgette birthday cake, big enough for all 60 of us to sample. Our annual fundraising activity at the party, the Auction of Promises, realised a fabulous £557.50, thanks to our enthusiastic auctioneer Stephen Conrad, the most sought after promise being the luxurious B+B in a summerhouse near South Cove in north Suffolk. Our volunteer numbers are increasing, with lots of lovely local people getting involved, and a total input of 858.5 days for the year. We have covered a great variety of practical projects, from applying wattle and daub to a lean-to roof, composting, apple picking and pressing (see photo of Laura and Kevin), deadwood fencing, hedge renovation and laying, gardening, door making, hinge making, bramble clearance, attending shows and fairs, loads of greenwood work and natural building, cob flooring. Over the winter months we are planning to cover hedge renovation & deadwood screening, green woodworking, basic carpentry and much more. We always have room for more volunteers, so if you are interested in doing practical work in a beautiful environment do get on touch, even if you have no previous experience of conservation work. Hadleigh Community Primary News A Wealth Of Christmas Activities For All! Christmas at Hadleigh Community Primary started on Saturday 30th November with our Christmas Fair. Rita Hoyle, the chair of our Home School Association wrote: Thank you to everyone who came and supported our Christmas Fayre on 30th November. We had a fantastic turn out and everyone got into the Christmas spirit especially with our special guest, Father Christmas who popped along to see the children. We also had a craft workshop making decorations, gift bags and boxes as well as other seasonal items. New this year was Santa’s workshop which gave the children the opportunity to buy and wrap gifts for their loved ones without them knowing. This proved particularly popular! None of this could have been achieved without the support of the many H.S.A. volunteers, staff and parents. Particular thanks must go to Gray’s Fish and Chip shop for their kind donation of sausages, Morrisons for the rolls and Hadleigh Maid for their delicious chocolates. A great event, enjoyed by all, we were able to raise an outstanding £1605.78! Thank you to all that supported our school. The Christmas Star Reception delighted parents and the entire school with their performances of ‘The Christmas Star’ – a delightful nativity play which also included astronauts visiting the moon! We have a particularly large Reception group this year – 90 children - so it was a great achievement to organise them all to be in the correct position on stage at the correct time. They had beautiful bright costumes, sang with enthusiasm and were a credit to the school. Ralph the Reindeer This play was presented by Year 1, and once again, was a great success. The bright costumes made it a delight to watch and the children were able to even display some mathematical skills during one song which included a countdown to ten! Every word could be heard from the clear narrators, and the singing was very clear. Well done to all involved in the production. Key Stage 2 Carol Service at St Mary’s Church All of Key Stage 2 went to St Mary’s Church for a carol service on Tuesday 17th December, this has become a tradition in our school. It was wonderful to see so many children in church celebrating the Christmas story with a wealth of songs and music. In addition to this, the choir, recorder players and bell ringers entertained local pensioners at the Hadleigh Baptist Church Christmas dinner and then some members of the choir and bell ringers also sang at Angel Court and Sydney Brown Court. Year 2 Share Afternoon Year two had an alternative way of celebrating Christmas by inviting parents to work with the children for an afternoon, participating in Christmas linked activities. Year 5 Movie Evening On top of all of our activities throughout the school, Year 5 were able to produce and prepare short movies to entertain parents during the penultimate week of term. Titles included ‘Captured Clown’, ‘The Beast of the Feast’, ‘Science Fair’ and ‘The Quest.’ The project was cross curricular incorporating science (sound), ICT (using Movie Maker), D&T (making popcorn boxes) and Literacy (creating scripts). The children and parents thoroughly enjoyed the presentations and the evening was a great success. Year 5 would like to thank ‘The Frame Store’ for their support as they provided the card for the pop up books that they used in their recent D & T lessons. Do you have a child born between 1st September 2009 and 31st August 2010? Please note that you need to apply for a school place for the 2014/15 Academic Year by 15th January 2014. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 9 sees the beginning of the third year for Bildeston’s own history magazine with a ‘man of mystery’ peeking out from the front cover. Looking back over the last four issues, I would like to thank all those people of Bildeston and beyond who have contributed articles, photographs or information, which have made the content of the magazine so varied. John Gardiner of Sheringham, Norfolk, makes a welcomed return with an article illustrated with family photographs concerning his grandfather, champion cyclist and butcher of Bildeston. I am sure that there are many of you who remember the butcher’s shop just down High Street from the Crown Inn and also Stills Stores in Market Place, run by John’s other grandparents the Pools. The series ‘Lords of the Manor’ continues with the Revett family who, by the end of the 17th century, were asset rich but cash poor. Financial mismanagement was probably William Revett III’s downfall; he eventually had to sell-up to pay-off his debts and throw himself and his family upon the generosity of his brother-in-law. When William died in 1706, his goods and chattels were valued at ÂŁ72, when a year earlier, Bildeston Hall estate had been sold for ÂŁ5,500. Jane Baker was pleased when she was offered Bildeston Primary School as her first teaching post in 1959, as it was conveniently close to her home in Lavenham. Her infant class regularly went into the playground to use the climbing frames and on the last occasion, Jane took photographs, which are reproduced in the magazine. If you recognise yourself, a member of your family or some of the other pupils who were in the infant class in July 1961, you may like to share your memories of the school between Chapel Street and Duke Street A carrier leaving Bildeston Market Place before it was transferred to about 1900 Newberry Road in 1968. Other features include Bildeston in 1864 that is 150 years ago, when the population was 788, the majority of men were agricultural labourers and there were four pubs. Shops and traders are listed as well as destinations of carriers. What could not be purchased in the village could be sent for by mail order or obtained via the carriers, by using them as transport for personal shopping trips to local towns or as a collection and delivery service. The year 2014 is the centenary of the start of the Great War (1914-1918), later called the First World War. Bildeston History Quarterly would like to feature your Bildeston family members who served during that conflict in whatever capacity. If you have any memorabilia concerning that period, which could be loaned for copying, please contact the editor. Bildeston History Quarterly Issue 9 (Winter 2013-2014) is out now priced ÂŁ3. Available at Bank House Stores and Brook Farm Studio in Bildeston, Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer and Avis the Newsagent in Hadleigh. Sunday 1st December 2013 Hadleigh Town Council would like to take this opportunity to pass on its thanks to everyone involved in making this year’s event such a success. It has been a long time since we have seen the Market Place so full of people to see the Christmas Lighting Up ceremony so a big thank you must go to our very special guest Griff Rhys Jones (supported by his lovely wife Jo) for taking time out of his busy schedule to throw the switch for us. He was joined on stage by Hadleigh Town Mayor, Councillor Brian Lazenby. Firstly special thanks must go the last remaining members of the Town Forum, particularly to Brian Loftus, Sarah Loftus and Glenn Root for volunteering to undertake all the ‘behind the scenes’ work. To Sue & Terry Angland, Jan Byrne, Jean Chapman, Aileen Ker and Tom Gordon for the duties they carried out during the afternoon. This year’s event was the last time that the Town Forum’s fund raising efforts will be financing any town events. Hadleigh Rotary Club ensured that Santa flew in safely on his sleigh landing in the Market Place with all his presents and joined by two of his reindeers. Our thanks must also go to the following people without whom the event would not have been able to go ahead: Mr Rob Partridge for erecting and decorating the main tree which was supplied by Hadleigh Chamber of Commerce, Cowles Electricians for their continued support in all they do to ensure the lights work, are in the right place, and most importantly are safe, The Hadleigh Sea Scouts, Ansell Centre and the Daily Grind Coffee Shop for providing refreshments and to all the performers: Nuclear Winter; Craig Hutton and Harry & Hollie who gave their time and took to the stage. It was lovely to have the Elmsett Brass Band to accompany the carol singing once again. Finally to Mr. Morley for providing the fairground in Toppesfield Hall Car Park which Babergh District Council allows us to use. Babergh District Council also provides litter bins.

At the December meeting members of Hadleigh Evening WI stood for one minutes silence to remember Dorothy Claireaux a very popular member who passed away on November 28th. At the December meeting of Hadleigh Evening WI members celebrated Christmas with a delicious buffet. Background festive music was provided by Sophie Rickard who amused us with a selection of jokes The president Rae Stapleton recited her favourite poem “The Highwayman”s Daughter”. Joan Rudman chose Pam Ayres poem about a battery hen, Jane Haylock read a poem by her husband Bryan. Gill Taylor’s told us a tale of little boy who wrote thankyou letters for gifts. He was particularly grateful to receive a £5.00 note. Philippa Carruthers read a passage from the book “Suffolk Christmas” about two prisoners of war who in 1944 spent a happy Christmas with the farming family who had been employing them during the war.. Local WIs in the Three Valleys Group including Hadleigh Evening WI celebrated the festive season with a carol service at Polstead Church. Rae Stapleton organised a trip in January to Snape Maltings to see the Co-op Juniors Christmas spectacular “A Christmas Carol” . Magdalen House Care Home News from The Station Firstly, Happy New Year to you all! I hope that you all had a peaceful New Year and are now raring to go in 2014. The dawn of a new year always prompts many of us to think of resolutions, many of which we never keep, and challenges for the 12 months ahead. With this in mind, I thought I would detail just some of the schemes we have running in and around Hadleigh and ask that think about the community around you, and just how you can have a positive impact on crime and anti-social behaviour. Neighbourhood Watch: The old favourite. Many of you will know of, or heard of this scheme. It is probably the longest running Police and community linked practice in the Country. Any street in any Town or village can sign up, and members will find that most insurance companies discount their home insurance policies if they can prove active membership. Members will have a sticker in their window that reinforces the extra street signage informing all visitors that they are Neighbourhood Watch. The expectation is that you keep an eye on neighbouring properties and inform Police when anything suspicious happens. The co-ordinator will get invited to regular meetings and receive updates from the local Police Team. Street Watch: Volunteers sign up and are given hi-visibility tabards with the Street Watch logo emblazoned on it. They will patrol the Town in groups of two or more and engage with members of the public who are out in our public spaces. They can be tasked by us at the Police Station to target specific areas that are of interest. It is a non-conflict roll, but highly rewarding. Serving members have stated the pride they take in working with the Police and helping make a difference in the Town. Community Speed Watch: Volunteers are trained by the Police in the use of a Speedar recording device (speed gun). The training is minimal, and once approved, teams of three can attend pre-approved sites in Hadleigh and use the speed gun to monitor the speed of traffic. The members will not stop traffic, but do filter all vehicle details back to us. Letters are sent to those found to be driving over the speed limit, and it enables us to be more specific on our patrols and in locations that are proven to have more speeding vehicles. The Hadleigh Town Council purchased the equipment and the current members are very keen for new faces to become involved. Lorry Watch: For those residents living in Benton Street. Suffolk County Council Trading Standards department work with Police to train residents in identifying what constitutes a heavy goods vehicle over the weight of 7.5tonne. Once they have received the training, they can email vehicle details of offending parties straight to me. I share this information with Trading Standards who then write to the vehicle owner. If it is a repeat offender, Trading Standards then look to take the driver to Court. Since the scheme started, we have seen more drivers prosecuted than before. Cadets: New to the Babergh District. We are in the process of setting up a new Cadet scheme where we are recruiting 13 - 16 year olds to engage in community events. They will be given weekly training and a uniform (nonpolice). There will be development opportunities for those involved and potential for further integration into the policing family. Paws on Patrol: Soon to be launched. An extension of Street Watch, this will encourage dog owners to sign up and be vigilant whilst walking their pet. Magdalen House would like to wish you all a Happy New Year. Following on from our Christmas Bazaar we raised £680.00 on that day for our residents’ fund. We would like to say thank you to our local shops for donating prizes for our raffle and to all our friends, family and residents for all the support on the day. We have raised £500.00 in the last few months for our mangar cushion, which means we are half way to reaching our goal. Also I would like to thank Darrell Thomson for coming to our home in December and taking part in another reflexology session for our Rose Perry residents, which in turn was very successful. We found that reflexology reduces stress and gives our home a more calming & relaxed atmosphere. Darrell & Magdalen House are trying to arrange to buy a light therapy box. We feel this would be very beneficial to our residents. Light box therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to help treat medical conditions such as skin conditions, seasonal affective disorder and has been known to help people with dementia. With our upcoming events we would like to arrange a 1940s dance and will asking members of the public for any ideas or memorabilia that we could use for this event. We are also asking for any donations for our home such as an old fashioned record player, radios, ornaments and anything from that era which we can use to transform our residents lounges to a more homely home.

Dear Sir I wish say a big thank you to Jan Byrne and all who worked with her to bring about the recent withdrawal of the Tesco bid from Hadleigh. The campaign group has worked tirelessly on our behalf, kept us informed and were sharp enough to know when to spend money and bring in the heavy guns. I much appreciate their vigilance and attention to detail as without this the outcome would have been very different. Let’s hope the future plans for the site will be far more acceptable to the entire community and kinder to the High Street traders and shoppers. Jan Devey

Dear Sir

Two Films to Greet the New Year Friday 10th January at 7.30 pm

BEHIND THE CANDELABRA (15) Way before the pop stars and divas of today came Liberace: pianist and flamboyant star of both stage and television - synonymous with showmanship and outrageous extravagance, gaining millions of fans worldwide. This film is gloriously entertaining and yet this true story does not conceal the fact that Liberace had a secret love affair with a young but handsome Scott Thorson who entered Liberace's life in 1977. Friday 24th January at 7.30 pm

THE MOO MAN (U) This is a feature-length film starring a Sussex dairy farmer – and his herd of 55 cows! Steve Hook is the farmer and he runs an organic dairy farm near Pevensey. The main thrust of this film is the bond which Steve Hook has with his 55 cow herd – he knows them all by name as they surge towards him for a pat. His favourite is Ida, a 12 year old Friesian, who gets taken to Eastbourne for a photoshoot. The visit develops into a tussle when Ida refuses to return home and four big men use their combined might to get Ida into the trailer! Admission is £3.50 on the door for adults and £2.50 for children (Moo Man only). There will be an interval in both films when refreshments will be served.

As a mother to a very young child I find the mother and child parking spaces a blessing. The extra space allow me to open the car door wide enough to get my daughter out of the car, which a standard parking space does not. Also I am able to safely place the pram beside the car and put my daughter in it, with the knowledge I am not going to be run over as I am in the way. Last year after I had my daughter by emergency C-Section I found the mother and child parking spaces more vital, as getting a baby car seat in and out off a car uncomfortable. If I had to park in a standard parking space I would have to twist in such a way to get my baby out which caused me lot off pain along my scar. I found for a while until C-Section scar had healed better if I couldn't get into a mother and child parking space I would simply go home to avoid the pain. I am telling you how important these parking spaces are for families with young children because I have notice over the last few months at Morrisons/QD, that many people without children are parking in the mother and child spaces. The people I have seen so far who do this all seem to be over the age of 50. I am asking you to please do not do this, and show good manners and consideration to the people who these spaces were set aside for. Kelly Webb

Dear Sir I live in Clopton Gardens and I am absolutely fed up with having to clean dog pooh off the wheels of my buggy and my sons shoes. There are piles of it at the back entrance to the school, as well as on the pavements, and actually a mound outside my house. Please could I ask your readers that if they see a dog fouling or an irresponsible owner not clearing up after their dog, could they report it to the Environmental Department at Babergh District Council on 01473 826622. Laura Smith

Dear Sir It is with regret that the committee of the Friends of Angel Court have made the decision to dissolve the Charity. This is due to the decline in membership and support. We would like to thank the many people who have supported and helped with fund raising over the many years this charity has been in existance. Both the residents and Day Care have benefitted from your generousity. Mary Munson, Chairman

Beaumont School Report In this modern world young people are growing up surrounded by technology of all forms. The technology can be extremely useful but there are potential dangers if used incorrectly. At Beaumont we feel it is very important to teach the children the skills and knowledge to be able to use technology safely both at school and at home. As part of our work in this area the whole school took part in an ‘E-Safety’ week. The carefully selected materials and activities focused different aspects of the children’s electronic lives, ranging from emails to social networks. It was encouraging to find out that the children already had a good basic knowledge with some commenting on how they would be educating the adults at home too! The time leading up to Christmas is a wonderful time of year to be working in a primary school. At Beaumont this is no exception. Festive activities have been in full swing, with Christmas carols being practiced, seasonal activities completed and parties being organised. For the first time this year the school held a ‘Christmas Sing-a-Long’ where parents were invited to join the children in the school hall for an eclectic performance to celebrate Christmas. The children spoke about what Christmas meant to them and their families. They also re-told the Christmas story, read out Christmas poetry and of course sang the obligatory Christmas songs and carols. We were also joined by Reverend Thrower who spoke to the children about Christmas. Our thanks go to him for joining us. There was a great atmosphere in the hall, with the parents and children really enjoying the Christmassy experience. The children in Dragonflies Class have had a busy time. They took part in an excellent Advent workshop put on by the people at St. Mary’s church as well as spreading the Christmas spirit by singing to the members of the British Legion in Hadleigh. The younger classes at the school celebrated the Christmas season with their parents by taking part in a Christmas craft afternoon. Mums and Dads were invited to join the children in a range of craft activities, which seemed to involve a ton of glitter! The children went home with a bag full of Christmas craft goodies. Lastly, the whole school was treated to a performance of The Christmouse Tale, a warming festive story. The review below is from Alyssa in Year 6. On Monday 2nd of December, we had two actors who came into our school. They put on an exquisite performance of The Christmouse Tale. The Christmouse Tale performance The show was about an elderly man who owned a pet shop but the pet shop was out of business and only had one cute, young little mouse left. But little did the owner know that the mouse was destined to be bought by a young boy. The show was 5 stars quality and I really enjoyed watching it. My favourite part was when the mouse was united with his new owner. It was like a family reunion except the young boy was a new owner. I was also amazed by the costumes and scenery which made the whole story come to life. I really enjoyed the play and I hope that the performers can come again another time.

Thank You Horace Waspe of Whatfield would like to thank everyone who attended his 90th birthday celebrations in November and the kind donations of £405 which he kindly donated to Friends of Bildeston Surgery. And he would also like to wish everyone A Very Happy New Year.

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Once again Chris and Phil came up trumps and served us up a terrific and entertaining quiz for the Christmas meeting of the Club. I have to admit the noise level was more suggestive of a school age party than that of mature and serious gardeners! Possibly this was because we were expected to remember details from the 1950's to 1990's on any subject from pop stars to politicians and all things in between. Many thanks once again for the time and energy from you both in organising such a wonderful success. This was followed by a buffet supplied by the committee after John had announced the overall winner of the monthly competitions, well done Ivan and well done to all the members who took part. It now remains for me to wish everyone a “Happy Christmas and New Year, although by the time you read this the festive season will be done and dusted. Never-the-less here's to a successful 2014 and lets pray for the weather we want and need as gardeners to come at the right time for a change. Oh well; this is Britain and we all know it's unpredictable but here's hoping anyway. See you at the February meeting, no meeting in January. Ruth Allen 822323

Eastern Family Services - A Fostering Family’s View Following on from previous articles written by one of our fostering families we detail below the daughter’s thoughts on being a foster family. When my parents first approached me I don’t think I was quite aware what fostering actually entailed. Once my parents contacted EFS I started learning and thinking about what it would be like to have a foster child living with us. It made me think about how lucky I am to have had the upbringing I have had and I wanted to share that with someone who hasn’t been so lucky. I was allowed to attend some training at EFS which really helped me understand what fostering could be like. Mum and I were fortunate to meet the child prior to coming to live with us so we got a brief idea of what they would be like as a family member and they got a good idea of what we would be like. I had various discussions with EFS to see if I was really okay with fostering which was so reassuring. At first when I had friends over our foster child would not leave us alone so I told my mum I didn’t want anyone round again, but in the end I stuck with it. I can now have my friends over, and like with any kid, if you give them a bit of attention, they leave you alone after a while. Our foster child has also got better at socialising with my friends and now asks politely if they want to listen to them read, which my boyfriend does on most visits, which makes me so proud to see. The foster child is now truly part of our family and has progressed so much. I think the hardest part of the fostering experience were the times I had to watch our foster child being horrible to my mum. Those times were the only times I regretted the decision to foster, but after my mother stuck with it, after us as a family unit giving structure, routine and stability our foster child has now become the younger sibling I always wanted. We have our banter and they annoy the hell out of me sometimes, but it wouldn’t be natural if they didn’t, because with everything you have to take the bad with the good, and the good is us playing cards and laughing my socks off at their young humour. With fostering you get to watch someone else grow up and this makes you proud to help your new brother or sister have a happier life and a happy family. We hope you found this informative and if this has inspired you to find out more about fostering please look at our website www.easternfamilyservices.com or call us on 01206 299775 - we are more than happy to answer any questions you might have and help you think about whether fostering is right for you and your family

Driveway and Patio Specialist

Hadleigh Gardens Personal Thoughts I am planning this Winter to overhaul one footpath in my vegetable patch and lay a couple of new ones. The path needs overhauling because it was laid when I first aquired the extra garden, and eighteen years of digging, adding mushroom and garden compost have raised the level of the ground by a couple of inches so that it is difficult to keep the path clean. My paths are built by simply laying slabs on a bed of sharp sand without using any mortar, so raising the path only means lifting the slab, adding more material and then puting the slab back and adjusting it to the new level. If it goes well I might get round to a bit of levelling on the original garden paths which are not perfect after about 36 years. Over the years I have collected an excessive number of books on gardening. I inherited some from my grandfather, and some more from an uncle. I have decided it is time to reduce these to those that I still find useful. The 3 books that I refer to most are "The Readers Digest Encyclopaediaof Garden Plants","The Popular Encyclopaedia of Gardening" by H H Thomas & Gordon Forsyth, and the "RHS Dictionary of Gardening". The last one has gone through many editions. I have the 4 volume one published in 1951. Any keen gardener should have at least one good gardening encyclopaedia, plus a couple of specialist books on their main gardening interests. Weather Records In November at Kersey there were 56.1 mm (2.2") of rain, which is our average monthly rainfall. This made the 3 month figure 181.2 mm (7.1") which is again close to the average. As I predicted last month the ground is not drying out, and my grass has missed its final cut. In November the maximum temperature was 13 Cel (68F), which is what we would expect. The minimum temperature for November was -1 Cel (39F) which is also typical. In my garden the ground temperature at writing is 5 Cel (44F), which is slightly warmer than average for mid December. Hints Why not make a New Year Resolution to grow something different from seed in 2012 ? Raising plants from seed is becoming a dying art, and as a result the variety of seeds offered in most seedsmen's catalogues is slowly reducing. I am awaiting my 2014 Chiltern Seed catalogue. Chiltern specialise in offering a wide variety of seeds, but with no pictures, so you need your encyclopaedia or the internet to sort out what you are actually buying, but they do offer seeds that you will not find anywhere else. If the weather is mild get on with the pruning jobs. If we have heavy snow remember to knock it off of evergreens before the weight breaks branches. Wishing all my readers a Happy New Year, John Rye

Hadleigh Healing Society A Happy and Peaceful New Year to everyone with the hope that life will be easier and less stressful. Hopefully, there will be more harmony between nations because conflict only causes bitterness and hate. Just smiling once a day makes someone on the receiving end of it feel better but you will also benefit. A smile or a hello costs nothing, give it freely, and the world will seem a better place. Remember that wonderful smile of Nelson Mandela or of a small child. These memories remain with us forever. Lots of people do not have many happy memories, they only remember the unhappy times. Allow us, the healers, to listen not make any judgements all in the strictest confidence and perhaps you will feel as if you have shed a heavy load. Christmas, flowers in the spring etc. It was agreed that the Clerk would speak to the playgroup organisers to see if they would like to do this.

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham? If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940. The main matters discussed at the meeting of 27 November were: • Defibrillators Jon Needle (JN), Community Partnerships Manager (Suffolk) for the East of England Ambulance Service., explained the process of setting up a Community Public Access Defibrillator site. Following his presentation, councillors discussed the possibility of installing defibrillators in both telephone boxes in the village. This was agreed in principle, but further research would be carried out before a final decision was made. This would be an agenda item for the January meeting. • District Council report The transformation process was continuing and Babergh would continue to work with communities, helping them to help themselves by providing expertise and guidance. The Council was keen to encourage more effective recycling and it was suggested that some villages could be used as examples of good practice. Cllr. Sue Wigglesworth said the future of the offices in Corks Lane was definitely on the agenda, but no decision had yet been made. • County Council report SCC’s budget for 2014/15 would be finalised in February; the council had already identified savings of £38m. The budget would be finalised in February 2014. Cllr Gordon Jones said all the county councils were opposed to the tolling of the A14, especially as it would be the only toll road in the country where there was no reasonable alternative. • Police report There had been one reported crime since the last meeting – theft of heating oil from a property in Lower Layham. PCSO Amanda Coleman said heating oil thefts were on the increase at the moment, as were shed break-ins. She said information on alarms, locks etc was available from the police station. • School bus Both SCC and the operator (Carter’s) were aware of the problem when children were getting off the bus in Upper Layham; however, SCC felt that the physical nature of the site made it impossible to create any suitable southbound bus stop infrastructure. MW said a parishioner had been liaising direct with the bus company and had suggested following the American solution – ie the bus would stop in the middle of the road and the driver would wait until all the children were safe before moving on. • Marquis Of Cornwallis The open meeting held on Monday 11 November had been well attended. No decision had yet been made on whether to apply to Babergh for the property to be listed as a Community Asset. • Lunch Club The Community Lunch held on 6 November had been well attended – the next one would be on Wednesday 5 March 2014. • Recycling credits JC confirmed that the total amount to date of recycling credits received for the current year was £194.22; it was anticipated that the previous year’s total of £380 would be reached or exceeded. It was agreed that the funds should be used for the benefit of the community – possibly towards the cost of the defibrillators in the telephone boxes, should it be decided to go ahead with this project. • National Grid The Chairman referred to the decision by National Grid to put on hold the Bramford to Twinstead project, and thanked the members of the working group - Louise Allen, Robert Keeble, John Curran, David Pearce and Nick Reid – for their hard work. He said that there was now an important five year period in which to continue to build a defence against overhead power lines and suggested trying to make more of the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing which operated from Benton End under the guidance of Sir Cedric Morris. He also felt it would be worthwhile trying to extend the AONB further into the Brett Valley, on the back of the work already done by the Stour Valley Society. • Footpaths & Highways The Wyncolls Lane track had been cleared by the landowners. The PC was exploring the possibility with SCC as to whether the route could be downgraded to a bridleway. • Planning – Raworth Bungalow, Upper Street – conversion and extension of existing cartlodge to form two-storey dwelling & erection of detached double garage. Councillors expressed concern about access and potential traffic issues, as well as concerns already expressed in relation to previous planning applications; the Clerk would write to Babergh accordingly. • Phone boxes A suggestion had been made by a parishioner that the local play group be asked to make paintings to fill each window – eg snowflakes for 42

A New Year ‘Recycling’ Resolution 2014 will be an even more important year for recycling in Layham. The glass and textiles that have been recycled at the ‘Recycling Centre’ on the playing field and the textiles at The Queens Head in Lower Layham have raised several hundred pounds, through Recycling Credits, for the village. We now have a new target! The Parish Council has been researching the possibility of having defibrillators in the village and this idea has been agreed in principle. It has also been agreed, if the project goes ahead, that the money raised through Recycling Credits will be put towards funding. So the more you recycle at our centres will help fund defibrillators which could save the lives of Layham residents. MAKE A NEW YEAR RESOLUTION - RECYCLE IN LAYHAM Glass, tins and textiles at the playing field and textiles at The Queens Head. St. Andrew’s – your Parish Church Sunday Services in January 5th January 10.30 am Morning Worship 12th January 9.15 am Sung Eucharist 19th January 9.30 am Café Church 26th January 9.15 am Morning worship with baptism THANKS to those who supported A Star and Angel Spectacular. Over £200 was raised for St Andrews. Work on the church tower Anyone passing St Andrew’s Church on Wednesday 23rd October may have wondered what was going on seeing a high lift in operation around the tower. No, the tower is not falling down but there is an urgent need for the lead roof to be replaced and for the brickwork to be repaired and re-pointed. This is the initial stage of the work. After several attempts over the years the Parochial Church Council (PCC) has been allocated a grant from English Heritage being a percentage of the estimated costs. The PCC has to fulfil many conditions of maintenance of the church and, most importantly, has guaranteed to raise the balance of the cost of the repairs within the period to February 2015. The Friends of St Andrew’s have promised a substantial amount and we have a grant available from Suffolk Historic Churches Trust. Our architect, Robert Keeble, has offered his services ‘free of charge’ and to date we have received one generous donation from a villager towards the total cost. St Andrew’s Church is a very significant part of our village to many people whether they attend church services or not. We would welcome donations from anyone who feels they could support this worthy cause. All fundraising by the PCC goes towards the general maintenance of the church, insurance, electricity etc. and the Parish Share paid to the Diocese. Churchwardens Sonia Groom 822220 Audrey King 822081 Carer of the Year Each year, the East Anglian Daily Times, in partnership with a dozen other local organisations, organises the ‘Stars of Suffolk’ awards. One of our own Layham residents, Mr John Gurr, was named as Carer of the Year at a ceremony at the New Suffolk College in November. As Chairman of the Ipswich and Suffolk branch of Parkinson’s UK, John was described as “caring and supporting.” Despite experiencing poor health himself, and being full-time carer for his wife who suffers from the condition, he still finds time for the responsibilities his role demands. Members of the group say that John has completely changed the club into a forward thinking, positive and vibrant social gathering for Parkinson’s sufferers in this area. Good man John – we are proud of you (Photograph by kind permission of the EADT). 60th Anniversary National Churches Trust The photograph shows Church Wardens Sonia Groom & Audrey King with their husbands outside Westminster Abbey after attending a special service to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the National Churches Trust. The service, in a packed Abbey, was attended by the Duke & Duchess of Gloucester & the address was given by the Archbishop of Canterbury the Most Revd and Rt. Hon Justin Welby. They felt privileged to be part of the occasion.

Layham Playgroup It’s nearly Christmas... We have been very busy the last couple of weeks getting ready for Christmas and doing Christmassy crafts and activities. Thank you to one of our lovely mums who gave up some of their spare time to help us with some crafts for our contribution to St Andrews Angel and Star festival. On Monday we held our carol service at the church. We would like to say a BIG thank you to all those at St Andrews church who made us feel so welcome! We will be finishing this term with our annual Christmas party, this year being held at Birch Farm. The children will have lots of fun running around and playing before sitting down to enjoy a delicious festive lunch. Next term we will be thinking about winter. We are hoping for a sprinkling of snow so we can dress up warmly and play outside in the playgroup garden and maybe even build a snowman! We will be talking about the different homes the animals and wildlife around us live.

The Cinnamon Trust Layham The Cinnamon Trust is the only specialist national charity for the terminally ill and people in their later years and their much loved, much needed companion animals. We urgently need dog walking volunteers in Layham who are able to offer some much needed walks for a lovely 4 year old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel. What happens if illness, injury or just the fact that we all get older eventually affects our ability to look after our four legged companions? A large number of elderly or ill pet owners become very worried about their ability to care for their pets, and feel that their only option is to rehome them, this is where our national network of dedicated volunteers step in to offer support enabling them to stay together. We’ll walk the dog for a housebound owner, we’ll foster pets when owners need hospital care, we’ll fetch the cat food, even clean out the bird cage or litter trays. We are always seeking new volunteers even if you can only spare an hour a week we would love to hear from you, If anyone can help please call during office hours 01736 758707 or via email volunteer@cinnamon.org.uk Please also check out our website for more details www.cinnamon.org.uk

THE OBSERVER This is a new column as seen by one person in and around Hadleigh The dust has settled over Tesco for now and those concerned in the triumph can be well satisfied with what they achieved. Not so the folk who live at the top of Aldham Mill Hill as it seems that the public servants that inhabit Endeavour House seem hell bent on the quarry being reactivated with complete disregard to the safety of all road users, motorists, cyclists and pedestrians alike on the hill. The quarry has permission to operate for goodness knows how long but it seems the jobsworth's that inhabit Suffolk County Council ignore totally that the hill is a very busy and dodgy road. The locals don't seem to be getting much in the way of support from their elected county representatives either. Traffic, Tesco or not is still very much of an issue in the town and November into December certainly highlighted the problem. It started off with a monster of a wagon with German registration plates emerging from Duke Street and turning RIGHT into the High Street, nearly taking off the corner of the library. The question was where on earth he could have come from, nowhere else than from over Toppesfield Bridge! We then had to follow our european friend down Benton Street and I thought the A12, but he trundled on toward East Bergholt. Myself and a dozen or so others in convoy were relieved to see the back of him and wondered as to the fate of those who had to mount the Benton Street pavement to avoid being crushed. The following week saw pure pantomine as a Spanish Formula 1 wannabe drove his forty something tonne lorry the length of the High Street and met his match in another unknown visitor from the EU emerging from Benton Street, both of them wanting to turn into Station Road. It was like watching two dinosaurs squaring up to each other, a bit like you see at an agricultural show with two earth movers prancing about, however a good old Hadleighite turned up towards the end of the dispute to wave the flag, God bless him!! As I once again passed through town, the High Street was again at a standstill caused by a lorry, modest by EU standards, parked outside a ladies salon. As many of our ‘Chelsea Tractor’ drivers are not that great in tight situations it was a case of “who dares, gets through”! On my return trip 30 minutes later he was still there so I slowed to his side, lowering the window I told him he had brought the whole town to a standstill. “I can't help that mate, I'm waiting for someone over there (a wave of the arm) to come back so that I can get in”, was the astounding reply! To complete it did anyone see the crazy French juggernaut flying down Angel Street in the gathering gloom having missed his turn off at the new roundabout? “Hands off Hadleigh” don't put your feet up just yet! Dick Turpin Rides Again:- On a scale of one to ten to successfully bring historical facts and characters alive, Mark Mitchels would score maximum points. How this gentleman recently entertained his audience with tales of local characters and the notorious Dick Turpin was pure delight. No one minded the many historical facts or the pictorial archive material because the speaker's up to date vocabulary and dramatic body language brought the long dead characters alive and into focus. The exploits of these famous or infamous people clearly demonstrated that history repeats itself with greed, power, sex and adultery being an integral part of their lives. Only the final retribution has changed over the centuries, at least in the UK, with the abolition of hanging and corporal punishment. A most informative evening which was thoroughly enjoyed by Fidelis members and their visitors. The Ballet Comes to Town:- The Royal Opera House, London, recently came to Cineworld, Ipswich with Peter Wright’s magical ballet The Nutcracker. The Royal Ballet’s interpretation of Tchaikovsky’s seasonal story was beamed in live from Covent Garden. This made it possible for members to enjoy a most polished performance with its exquisite costumes and sets without having to trek to London. As the cameras between audience and performers are quickly forgotten visits to future ‘beamings’ are planned. Party Time:- Dress code for the evening was ‘festive’ and once again the ladies slipped into their glamorous, glittery outfits and, in spite of the soggy weather, came ready to party at the club’s annual Christmas bash in the Dining Room, Hadleigh. Chaplin Catering served a delicious meal which was much enjoyed by all. The room only fell silent when Liz Wilson thanked all involved in the club’s activities and Rita Johnson and Jan Devey shared some humorous pieces with their audience. Miki Davies’ lucky ticket number enabled her to take home a hamper full of goodies. Kate Bailey caught party-goers on camera and a CD will follow. A Happy New Year to all who read our monthly Fidelis Activity News or FAN. JD

Phil Barlow, Carol Durston, Chris Williams, Phil Barlow & Andy Dodds A recent recipient of the British Empire Medal has received a standing ovation from senior members at his local golf club at an annual event he founded. Andy Dodds received the Queen's Birthday Award for services to Sudbury Cricket Club, where he has been a Jack of all trades, and his nomination was also supported by Newton Green Golf Club, where he has been a similar stalwart. Nineteen years ago he launched the Andy Platter, a Christmas competition for senior men at Newton, but recently handed over responsibility to other colleagues. He was able to take a back seat for this year's event, and received an ovation for his past services. The club did not have a senior section when he started the platter, but it will now be taken over by the seniors and become a spring time tournament. This year's event featured a sprinkling of women players for the first time, and ladies' captain Carol Durston was invited to present the awards. Club men's captain Chris Williams was winner on count back with 36 points from Mick Barlow and, in third place, Phil Barlow 32. Di Cunningham won the competition for women.

Old Boys Reunion Hadleigh United Football Club is holding a special reunion on Saturday 19th July 2014, for all those who have made a contribution to the clubs history over the years. Ex-players, managers, physios, committee members and ‘Brettsiders’ along with wives and partners, are all welcome to attend the function, which will take place in the clubhouse at The Millfield. It is hoped that the evening will be a chance to meet and reminisce with ‘old’ friends and team-mates, stimulated by the showing of some memorable matches on film. We will start the proceedings at 6.30 pm, with a hog roast at 8 pm followed by music and a late bar. If you would like to attend and/or have any memorabilia which we could display on the night, please contact either Rick Pett on 01473 822370 or John Day on 0777 525 2102.

Hadleigh Tennis Club Mid-Winter News! Well Christmas is over and we have had our Christmas dinner, which was another enjoyable and entertaining event. Now all we have to do is lose that weight that we have just put on after the delicious meal! The committee would also like to take this opportunity to wish all of our members a very happy new year. Our teams are putting on a good show in their respective leagues, with the mixed team now in Division 4, (up from Division 5) having won two of their three matches to date. The ladies’ first team has done even better, winning all six of their matches so far! Well done all of you. Our next big event will be the AGM in February, so if any members wish to join the committee, please let a current committee member know as soon as you can. Remember, this is your tennis club and you need to take this opportunity to have your say! Our website provides directions to the club and courts. We are also publishing dates for club events in a calendar on the website. Please go and have a look at it: www.hadleightennis.org.uk and feel free to give us any feedback about the site. Hadleigh Tennis club plays on three sessions per week during the summer months: Tuesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30pm to 8.00pm and Sunday from 9.30am to 12.00 pm. We are pleased to advise that annual membership fees have been held at £100 for adults and £60 for students, (this will be charged pro-rata for new members joining the club during the season). If you have any queries please contact us via: hadleightennis@gmail.com, or contact Paul Knowles on 07747 637147.

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group & Toppesfield Ltd www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh United’s adventure in the F.A.Vase continued with a home match against Welwyn Garden City. A tremendous contest ended with Hadleigh being victorious by three goals to two after extra time. Tes Bramble and Neil Calver scored for Hadleigh during normal time but Welwyn also scored twice meaning extra time was needed. There was just a couple of minutes remaining when teenager Michael Barwick grabbed our winning goal. Details of our next round opponents will be on the club website. Our trip to Needham Market in the Suffolk Cup ended in a loss for Hadleigh by three goals to nothing. We could have no excuses as Needham were the better team and they deserved their success. League matches in the period leading up to Christmas saw our position consolidated at the top of the Thurlow Nunn league. Big wins against Woodbridge and Thetford were followed by a convincing victory against Stanway. In the Red Insure Cup, a success by five goals to three at Ipswich Wanderers earned a place in the quarter finals. Our reserves beat Saffron Walden at the Millfield by six goals to five with Sam Sharp netting a hat-trick in a thrilling contest. The Reserves also had a good win at Halstead to go top of the league with young Harry Evans scoring one of the goals in a success by two goals to one. The Reserves did well to win at Wivenhoe by three goals to two but a poor performance at Long Melford resulted in a two goal defeat. Our Thurlow Nunn Youth Team are playing some good football. Eight goals were shared at Long Melford with Sam Sharp scoring twice in a thrilling contest. A draw at Halstead was a good result but defeats were suffered against Witham and Needham Market in the run up to Christmas. Prize winners in the latest monthly draw were Terry Adams and Nick Barwick. The Ground Improvement draw was won by Toppesfield Ltd.

Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures for Hadleigh United in January begin with a home match against Cambridge Regional College on Saturday 4th. A trip to Mildenhall on Saturday 11th is followed by a home match against Norwich united on Saturday 25th. Then we have a home fixture against Newmarket in the League Cup on Tuesday 28th. The Reserves will be home to Long Melford on Saturday 11th . Saffron Walden come to the Millfield on Saturday 18th before an away trip to Long Melford on Saturday 25th. Fixtures for the Thurlow Nunn Youth Team begin on Wednesday 15th with a home match against Halstead. On Thursday 23rd we make the short trip to Cornard before the month ends at Wivenhoe on Wednesday 29th. nSupporters are reminded that cup matches will take priority and any alterations to the above list will be on the club website.

Escape to the Country Object Drive On March 1st 2014, the Museum of East Anglian Life will be opening Escape to the Country, a new exhibition that will explore why city dwellers left their urban homes to set up new lives in rural East Anglia in the 1970s. In November, the Museum asked people to tell them the objects they think represent the ‘Good Life’ in the 1970s and its legacy. We got all kinds of suggestions; from horse brasses to hookahs and Barsham Fairs posters to buckets. The Museum needs your help in finding these objects. Do you have some old gardening equipment that you don’t want? Maybe you’ve got some 70s clothes lurking in your attic that you could loan? The list of objects the Museum is looking for can be found on their website. The objects don’t need to be 1970s originals and there are even a few modern bits and pieces on the list. Do you have an object for our exhibition? Email Eleanor at the Museum at eleanor.root@eastanglianlife.org.uk or phone her on 01449 612229 to have a chat

A replica of an iconic hut used by the world’s longest serving golf club professional is to be recreated as a starter’s shelter. The structure will be positioned beside the first tee at Newton Green Golf Club, where Arthur Davey served for 60 years, until 1979. His little hut beside the main A134 SudburyColchester road became part of the heritage of both the club, and the village, from which the club takes its name. The original structure is now a rotting hulk beneath a canopy of ivy, but was the nerve centre of the club in its former ninehole days. Davey was a legendary figure who walked a few yards from his cottage in the village to his job tending the course, taking green fees, making clubs and giving golf lessons. He was admired for his self-effacing benevolence and diffident charm. A group of enthusiasts are working with the club to complete the project at a cost of £4,000. Newton Green has one of the most successful junior sections in East Anglia, and through various initiatives is attracting a lower than normal age profile of golfers. Chairman Peter Philpott said: “As well as bringing young people into the sport, we believe it is important they appreciate local history and the heritage of the club. The shelter will feature an illustrated panel explaining its relevance to both the club and the village of Newton.” In addition to its role as a starter’s A 1960s picture of president Roly shelter, the building will be used for Oliver (left) and Arthur Davey outside serving snacks and drinks on the professional's hut major competition days, and much needed storage space. Because of other priorities, the club has decided the project must be self-financing through private subscription. Arthur Davey died at Newton, aged 97, in 1992.

Hadleigh Dolphins Swimming Club East Region Winter Championships Ben Olive Club captains Ben Olive and Bec Mann qualified for the East Region Winter Championships. The event was held at UEA Sports Park Norwich, an Olympic size pool, 50 m in length. Ben qualified for 50m backstroke with a time of 31.62. Bec qualified for the 100m backstroke with a time of 1.16.02. Both swimmers achieved a personal best time, and it was Bec's first time at the Regional Championships. It is a great achievement that a small town like Hadleigh can produce swimmers who can compete at this level. Round one of the Winter league was Bec Mann held at Bungay, all races were 200m, all the swimmers made a fantastic effort with the majority of Hadleigh competitors achieving Personal Best times, as usual there was a great team spirit and support. West Suffolk swimming club won on the night with Hadleigh coming 4th. But for a small club Hadleigh is punching above it's weight. Hadleigh swimming club can be followed on twitter@hadleighSC. Hadleigh Rugby Club Flying High once again! Hadleigh added yet another convincing victory in Eastern Counties Division 2 with an exhilarating performance against lowly Felixstowe at Layham Road on Saturday. This takes their number of wins this season so far to ten and still remaining unbeaten at home. Their fine league performances is matched by their cup run too, having already won the Suffolk Plate and heading to play against Sudbury in the semi-final of the Suffolk Cup. Having scored 490point and averaging fifty points each game fills the players with a confidence not seen for many years. Head Coach, Adam Miles has worked hard to get this young team to where it is and is keen to continue the good run. The youth teams too are sharing in this success with the U-15 squad reaching the Final of the Suffolk Plate for the third successive season and wins in the Felixstowe and Sudbury Rugby Festivals for U-7s, U8s and U9s teams. Times are good once again at Hadleigh RFC with both senior and junior sections of the club competing successfully against many of the bigger teams in the region. We are always on the look out for new members either playing at junior or senior level or just wishing to watch the games and having a relaxing drink in the clubhouse after. The youth, midi and mini sections meet every Sunday at Layham road and players from 5years of age are welcome to join in the fun. If you would like to know more about Hadleigh Rugby club you can visit our website at www.hadleighrfc.com or contact Alan Murray, Membership secretary on 01473 652448 or just come along to the club on a Saturday afternoon or Sunday morning. You will be given a warm welcome.
