What previous running experience can the Team draw on? They all started running from couch to 5k, progressing to park runs then increasing the distance to half marathons with Kate, Gillian eventually completing twelve half marathons in 12 months. Kate, Sarah and Laura have also all previously completed the Brighton Half Marathon. They have stuck rigidly to the 16 read this they will have completed the gruelling 26.219 miles run around the River Thames with more than 50,000 other dedicated participants. After numerous attempts and many months of seeking help from both Babergh Council and the Highways Authority, Water Lane in Upper Layham remained impassable to the villagers wishing to walk or cycle along this lane to get anything done nowadays would be to do it ourselves. I asked for help from the villagers of Upper Layham to clear away the mud and sludge from Water Lane so that once again the lane would be a safe route for children walking or riding their bikes, dog walkers, mums and dads pushing buggies to get to the Recreation Ground, the Church or the Village Hall.

The response was brilliant, so on Saturday 6 April we gathered at the top of Water Lane and commenced to dig easy but everyone gave their all and after a morning of hard work (and a tea break) Water Lane was once again passable.

It is a shame that it has been left up to the villagers to make Water Lane a safe place for people to walk rather than having to detour down Mill Lane, which is a made up an enormous thank you to all who gave their time to keep Water Lane as it should be.

Many readers will have seen the depressing sight of the abnormally low water levels in the River Brett, through Hadleigh, recently and have expressed their concerns in public media. This is a direct result of the sluice gates at Tinkers Lane, close to Hadleigh Football Club entrance, being left fully open by the Environment Agency (EA), which is responsible for their operation and experienced over winter but was done without reference to, or consultation with, the stakeholders.

Neither the Scout Group nor the local Angling Club, who help manage the river and report pollution, were consulted and in particular the Scout Group making since early March and despite our previous contacts with the EA regarding, in particular, our annual fund raising Duck & Raft Race.

If the present unfortunate situation continues then this years Event (9th June) will have to be cancelled, with a resulting shortfall in our funds. We had a small price increase during April as suppliers put their prices up once again. We apologise and wish to assure you that we try to keep them as low as we can. Our energy costs have more than doubled and Sky Sports have just increased their commercial rates beyond belief, partly I believe to stream footy for free. The huge increase in card payments has not assisted either, though we thank everyone for their custom however they wish to pay. The banks must be laughing their socks off as they close their branches and charge us for every transaction however big or small. A warning folks, once Always drink responsibly folks.

For many years I have been immensely impressed by the efforts, particularly by Jane, and the Visit Hadleigh team in promoting our wonderful town to attract visitors to come here. I have often observed Jane conducting guided

The County Councillor Awards were introduced by the last Chairman of Suffolk County Council and are an opportunity for councillors to recognise outstanding contributions being made by those individuals or groups, in the community. I would dearly wish to present other such awards to the many others here in our community who use their experience skills, and time to lead organizations and groups, especially to those who need help or in developing our young people to help them face the challenges of adulthood.

Suffolk Highways has now carried out road improvements on two of our roads where safety was of concern. Parking adjacent to the United Reformed Church. This was designed to reduce the need for vehicles, especially large agricultural types, from driving on the eastbound pavement and presenting hazards to pedestrians. For our April meeting we welcomed from Spalding. Her title for her She told us how she began sewing as a young girl with her Grandmother and ended up making clothes for other people. All her arrangements were connected with sewing, a container representing a pincushion like buttons. She had some wonderful arrangements. A very entertaining evening.

Apart from being unsightly and a nuisance, dog fouling can be a health risk, particularly to children, due to the risk of the parasite Toxicaris, so it is especially alarming that people are failing to clear up after their dogs in an area which is regularly used by children and the wider community alike.

It is an offence under the Dogs (Fouling of Land) Act 1996 not to clear up

Hadleigh Society has scooped a Suffolk Heritage Champion Award, presented by the Suffolk Preservation Society (SPS), in recognition of its work in protecting the historic natural environment

PC Niall Johnson reported that police continue to monitor activity around the Leisure Centre. There really are too many wonderful people to name all of them here, but Hadleigh is a town where people care. Learning from the past how to build a greener future

At Orchard Barn, everything we do has care for the environment at its heart, which is why we were so delighted to win the Waste Reduction and Recycling Award at the Creating the Greenest County Awards recently. The awards highlight environmental excellence in meeting the challenge of climate change and protecting our environment, from across Suffolk. Here are just a few of the things we do on our site:

Boudicca Border Morris is a community dance group based in Hadleigh. Our passion is to learn and perform traditional and original dances, supported by the brilliant, Boudicca Big Band, an eclectic mix of melody and percussion. The group has grown to over 30 members ranging in age from 16 to 72. On Saturday 15 June 2024, we will be hosting the 3rd Hadleigh Day of Dance.

An historic Suffolk pub has been saved – and is once again set to become a cornerstone again of the one of the prettiest villages in the county.

November; less than a year after new tenants, who previously ran a pub in Cornard near Sudbury, took over. There have been fears that the

years ago – would close for good but now local businessman Howard Watts has bought the White Hart and promises that it will once again be at the heart of Boxford life.

the oldest garage in the country – has this week unveiled his plans to put the White Hart back at the centre of the thriving community which has a population of 1,400. And it could be back in business within six to eight weeks – he is also suggestions from locals.

He said:”The White Hart is in the middle of the village and steeped in history. It was once the main malthouse for the local brewing industry and I wanted to ensure that it remained at the centre of the community. I have always liked the building and it is a valuable asset to the village.”

A number of members of Hadleigh and District Angling Society put themselves discuss the impact of Storm Babet other members of the public in Hadleigh offered to help. So a team of local volunteers, who can respond at short notice to open the gates when the river is rising and to close them again when the river level is falling, can work with the EA to protect property and wildlife by maintaining a more consistent river level with no extended periods of low water level.

Sadly 3 years later this has still not happened as the EA have yet to carry out repairs to the mill gates citing unknown ownership of the adjacent land as the reason and have currently just left the river to fall to its current level.

After Boxford Primary School did their fund raising day for us, we found out that one of their pupils had alone raised half the money through making beautiful book markers to sell, so I was very keen to meet Jessica and thank her in person. Her lovely family came along to the farm with Jessica and she had a morning of meeting and grooming some of our ponies. Big thank you to such a clever young girl, Jessica you are a star.

More importantly we treated over 40 kids from all over the region to British Cycling level coaching in an action packed day. We started the day with three separate skills sessions with everyone picking up either new skills or reinforcing previous experiences. The afternoon was jam packed with racing where the families got to bask in the sun and cheer for all the riders who got to show off their abilities and try to earn a medal in their respective classes. It genuinely was a brilliant day for all concerned and we, as a club, hope to run more events like this giving more
