Hadleigh Rugby Club - 2024 is our 40th Anniversary A very Happy New Year to all! Hadleigh RFU Club has come a long way since it was established in 1984 and continues to have a thriving Mini, Youth and Senior teams. We would like to thank – past and present – all of our coaches, players, members, sponsors, volunteers, family and friends for helping the club achieve this milestone. The club ended 2023 with a home win against Brightlingsea Rugby Club on Saturday 16 December, when Captain Harry Lloyd walked The Rams out. Hadleigh & Brightlingsea were level on points and it was set to be a great game but Hadleigh had their win by the narrow margin of 36-33. Our membership continues to grow, but we are always looking for more players so if you fancy or are re-starting an old sport come along and visit us, training and fixtures details are listed on our website. The club has various sponsorship packages available for businesses, so give us a call if you would like to support this local community club. Calling all Girls! In July 2022, we offered a series of free coaching sessions in local schools to boost numbers in our Mini section. By October 2022, we recognised that girls in years 4–6 were put off coming to the club because the only opportunity was full contact rugby in mixed gender teams. Continued on page 2

Continued from front cover So in January 2023, a girls only training opportunity was initiated by our specialist coaches with the option of tag rugby one week and contact rugby the next. This proved very popular in getting more girls to the club and playing rugby in one form or another. We visited 10 primary schools and girls have joined the club by going straight into the mixed teams or trained in the girls’ team for a couple of sessions and then moved across to the mixed teams or stayed on with the girls only team. We were recently invited to train with Tendering Tigresses at Mistley Rugby Club. Tendering Tigresses are a newly-formed group consisting of current mixed team players from Clacton, Mistley and Harwich. The aim is to form a new U12’s team for when the girls are too old to play in mixed teams. It was a fantastic opportunity for us, with seven Hadleigh girls getting their first experience of going to a different rugby club and training with a large group of girls. We now have 25 girls across all ages in the Mini section and are looking forward to fulfilling some girls only fixtures in 2024. We are currently planning a training morning during February’s halfterm for new and current players and are particularly on the lookout for girls in year 6 who are keen to be part of a U12’s girls’ team next season (September, 2024). If you would like more information about girls’ rugby at Hadleigh please email Sarah Bartholomew sarah.bartholomew@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk Keep an eye out for events at www.hadleighrfc.rfu.club, on social media and local news. Visit us at Hadleigh RFU Club, Layham Road Sports Ground, Layham Road, Hadleigh IP7 5NE or call us on 01473 823 231.

Our knitting circle is growing. What started as a couple of home knitters, creating colourful blankets from the squares they had made, has now developed into a not-for-profit cottage industry with over twenty ladies beavering away, in the comfort of their own homes. The results are amazing, colourful and some with wonderful patterns and designs. That’s not to say the squares have had their day, far from it. They are still a welcome contribution either sewn together or loose. Phillipa Knight, the area representative, for the charity Project Linus UK was surprised and delighted when she recently collected over 90 blankets for the charity. The variety of sizes in the consignment was most welcome as requests come from care homes, hospitals, individuals, neonatal units and special needs groups. A special thank you to all the knitters involved. Your efforts are very much appreciated. If you enjoy knitting why not join our happy band and support a worthwhile cause at the same time? For further details and a pattern, if you need one, please contact me Jan Devey 01473 827091 or email deveys@btinternet.com. Vestry Renewal:- Work is complete in time for the special open day on 19th January. From 10am to 4pm visitors will be able to view the amazing transformation which has taken place, over many months, by skilled artisans and craftsmen. Their painstaking restoration work has resulted in an impressive, functional storage space for important Church items. The generosity of the Friends of St Mary’s enabled the vital work to be carried out. Heating and Lighting:- If St Mary’s is to be comfortable 24/7 for both worshippers and community use, the knotty problem of adequately heating and lighting the cavernous space has to be addressed. After a great deal of research, the Renewal Team (RT) has found an affordable solution to ensure that the church is a comfortable venue all the year round. 14 beautiful chandeliers will adequately meet the challenge. These attractive units can be used collectively or separately as the need arises. Pledges:- Now that the total cost of the purchase and installation of the chandeliers is known, the RT will be pulling out all the stops to engage the community in its fundraising efforts. At this stage, as each light costs £5,620, we are looking for generous sponsors within the community to ‘pledge’ money to pay for all or part of a light. Pledge Forms and Gift Aid Declarations are available on the Vestry Open Day in St Mary’s on 19th January or from davidhoyle1967@gmail.com. Your pledges are vital. They will not only pay for the chandeliers but also pave the way to larger, national funding opportunities. In Loving Memory:- Many of you will be familiar with the humorous cartoons and verse created by the late Bryan Haylock of Idler Bookshop and Untapped Writers fame. Happily, a compilation of some of his work is now available in a new book ‘What Ho!’ This can be purchased for £5 from the Idler and Avis Newsagents. Jane will donate the profits to the Friends of St Mary’s. Don’t miss the opportunity to remember Bryan’s unique work in this delightful publication in his memory and support the church’s renewal initiative at the same time. Café Church, Pop-Up Lunchtimes and Craft Fairs:- Making full use of this wonderful community space will safeguard its future. If you are looking for something to do in the middle of the week why not join the pop-up lunchtime gatherings from 2pm to 5.30pm every second and fourth Wednesday of the month? These are becoming increasingly popular with young and old alike. If a mid-week visit doesn’t suit your diary you could try the Café Church on Friday mornings. Attendance is growing at these convivial gatherings and there is the added attraction of Andrew’s famous mouthwatering all-day breakfast and delicious bacon butties. Local creative talent is on display at a monthly Craft Fair on every first Friday. All activities are in addition to the quieter times for worship and prayer. The RT look forward to the day when the church will provide a welcoming, comfortable facility for all who walk through its doors. Please do come along and support the many varied events and activities at the church. These are open to all members of the community. Alone or with family and friends you can be sure of a warm welcome. Wishing you all the best for the coming year when we hope you will visit St Mary’s.

Staying Independent and Safe in your Home Home holds a central place in everyone's life, but its suitability becomes particularly crucial for older or less abled individuals. The ability to enter and exit the house safely, navigate within, access essential facilities such as the bathroom, cook a meal, and reach the bed without risk all directly impact our dignity and overall well-being. If you've started to recognise that some of these tasks are becoming challenging to perform safely, it's time to consider making improvements. Unfortunately, many people find themselves unsure of where to begin, often burdened by concerns about the associated costs. However, financial assistance is available through a Disabled Facilities Grant (DFG) for those with qualifying conditions so they can alter their homes to make life easier. A DFG is a means-tested grant that provides a maximum of £30,000 to make alterations to the home to help people remain independent and safe. This might include renovating a bathroom or kitchen to make it more accessible or converting a downstairs room to a wetroom or bedroom. To apply for a DFG, you can contact your local council or for additional information, visit www.gov.uk/disabled-facilities-grants. When it comes to addressing the crucial area of the bathroom, that's where our expertise shines - we’ve been creating bespoke accessible bathrooms and wetrooms for over 24 years. Sometimes our customers think they need a full renovation but more often than not they just need a few adaptations to make life a little easier such as the installation of grab rails near the toilet or installing a walk-in bath or shower that is easier to access. We understand it can be daunting when considering making alterations to your home, which is why we guide our customers every step of the way. Our friendly home surveyors visit customers in their homes to truly understand their challenges and to provide customised solutions that fit within their budgets. Our Customer Service team are always on hand if you have any questions throughout the process and our commitment to excellence is reflected in our 'Excellent' rating on Trustpilot. Our customers are at the heart of what we do, we’re still a family-run company since my wife Julie and I founded AHM Installations Ltd in 1999 drawing upon her nursing and caregiving experiences, along with my background in the mobility industry. We take pride in carefully guiding our customers through the installation of new bathroom equipment in their homes. Our mission is driven by a genuine desire to alleviate the struggles individuals face and our unwavering belief that we can always find a solution, regardless of the budget or situation. I remember a time when my world was very small; my hair was plaited and my dress was hand-made of gingham. Everybody knew me. At least that was my perception growing up. I was a little superstar, dancing on the stage at the Town Hall from the age of three. Plus, my dad was Kenny Scarff, local butcher, and to my young mind he knew everyone in our small town and they knew him. As I grew older, I realised how small my world view really was. I discovered that not everyone knew my dad. I was used to being praised at school for being one of the clever ones, but as I moved from Hadleigh High to sixth form at Great Cornard I became aware that I wasn’t always the smartest person in the room. Perhaps I was actually - ordinary. My life continued in an ordinary fashion. I moved away to the North East of England, where nobody had heard of Hadleigh, some has no idea where Suffolk was and no-one knew my parentage. I forged my own life, got married and had two boys. Life wasn’t always rosy but we plodded on, like everyone else. Until one November evening in 2010 when I came home to find my husband Andrew collapsed on the bedroom floor. Despite valiant efforts by the paramedics, he died that day of a heart attack. I was only 42 and our boys just 13 and 10. Two weeks later, on what would have been Andrew’s forty ninth birthday I started my first blog called unravelling edges. I wrote to help me process my thoughts as I embarked on a far from ordinary journey. Unexpectedly I had become a widow and a single parent overnight. I was suddenly out of sync with my own generation. Widows are supposed to be old! Through my writing I discovered I didn’t really know or understand what grief was. Through the comments I received about my writing, I discovered I was stronger and more resilient that I thought. I re-discovered the importance of family, friends, faith, and the power of sharing my words. For many years I have wanted to turn my writing into a book, a book about grief but also about glitter. Everyone’s life is full of ups and downs. Most of us have ordinary lives with some extraordinary bits scattered throughout. You just have to search for the sparkle. It’s been 13 years since Andrew died and so much has happened since then, including moving back to Hadleigh and being diagnosed with bowel cancer. In the past year, I finally figured out how I wanted to write my book. My memoir in search of lost glitter is written in very short stories, most of them only 100 words long, because when you are grieving or going through tough times, you can’t always concentrate on a longer narrative. There are also images, drawn by my talented niece @OliviaRose_design. Who doesn’t love a book with pictures? in search of lost glitter will be published by Resolute Books in January 2024 and I am holding a book launch at Hadleigh Old School on Friday 12th January between 7-9pm. Some of you may have already been invited but It would be lovely to see old friends I may have lost touch with. If our paths have crossed and you would like to attend please send me a message at sarahnicholsonwriter@outlook.com and I will add you to the guest list. Toni at The Little Ginger Bee in the High Street has kindly offered to stock my book, she may even have some signed copies. I will also be selling them at St Mary’s craft market on Friday 2nd February. May 2024 be sprinkled with glitter and joy whatever life throws at you. Sarah Nicholson

Lots To Do in 2024

HEAT

The new year presents us with an opportunity to reflect and consider what is in store for the year ahead. Our Annual Review at the end of November last year was an opportunity for us to take stock on all of HEAT’s ongoing projects and share our exciting proposals for 2024. Becoming a Community Interest Company is one of our first steps which will enable us to make bigger changes and give members more of a voice. We will be setting up a Hadleigh Nappy Library where people will be able to seek advice and borrow kits if wanting to switch to reusables. We also have two new major projects; Firstly, our Net Zero Campaign aims to support and involve the community in a carbon related change and generating energy at scale. And secondly, our Water Meadows Project to work with landowners to build habitat banks, improve wildlife and create nature based solutions to flooding along the Brett Valley. 2023 was an unprecedented year for seeing the worldwide affects of climate change, including in our very own town. We can’t shy away from these worrying times but we can use them to motivate us to make changes and HEAT are committed to continue supporting our community and give hope that change can and is happening. But we can’t do it without you. We are looking for people in Hadleigh who want to be part of the change in our future at this critical time. If you are interested please visit our website www.hadleighheat.org or contact hadleigh.heat@hotmail.com or join our Facebook group HEAT ECO Hadleigh. And if you want to express your thoughts and feelings about climate change, please consider attending our next climate cafe on 20th of January from 2-4pm at the Baptist Community Room on George Street. We would also like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their continued support.

HMS End the Year on a High 2023 saw the arrival of the Hadleigh Men’s Shed here in the town. It all started with a bunch of chaps coming together to discuss the possibilities and it quickly snowballed into reality. When we first got together we were not exactly sure how things would pan out, but we did know a bit about the ‘Men’s Shed’ concept. It all started in Australia, but quickly spread all over the world. The idea is simple; you create an environment, usually a workshop, where men can come together to make stuff. Although to be honest the making is really just an excuse to get the men together. Once aprons are donned and the activities started, the chatting begins. This is often followed by brew, or two! So in its simplest form the Men’s Shed is friendship group that helps to combat loneliness and helps to improve mental health. We spent most of the year kitting out and improving our ’shed’, which has been a great group activity and had helped to bring us all together. We finished the year on a high when we received a visit from the High Sheriff of Suffolk, Mark Pendlington DL, who surprised us by presenting us with an award. The High Sheriff of Suffolk’s certificate of gratitude and recognition in appreciation for the hard work and outstanding service that has enhanced the life of the community. As you can imagine, we were all delighted. As we start 2024 our journey continues and so if there is anyone out there who wants to come along then please do, you will get a very warm welcome. For more info please email us at hadleighmensshed@gmail.com or find us on Facebook.

The Autumn Term proved to be extremely busy with pupils representing the school in numerous sports festivals and competitions across Suffolk; these have included sports hall athletics, girls’ football, boys’ football, tag rugby, dodgeball and cross country. During the final day of term, the whole school took part in the annual Santas run to Lapland. The children thoroughly enjoyed this festive sports activity. Thank you to the HSA for providing much needed refreshments for all. On Thursday 7th December, Year 2 pupils performed a selection of Christmas Carols for the residents of Sydney Brown Court. Thank you to Sydney Brown Court for inviting us. Do you represent a group in the Hadleigh community? Would you like to share what you do with our children? We have assemblies every Monday morning and we would love to hear from all of the wonderful associations across Hadleigh. If you're interested, please email Mr Betts (abetts@hadcps.uk) to find out more. The children in our Reception classes have had a wonderful run up to Christmas. Starting with their performances of Follow That Star written by Mr Betts, complete with dancing sheep, a conga of towns people and beautifully sung solos and group performances. The children were praised for their clear speaking voices and the amount of songs (with actions) that they learnt. Our outside area was transformed into a Santa’s Workshop and Nativity scene for the last two weeks of term. Here, the children dressed up and acted the story of the birth of Jesus, and sang songs from their play, as well as cycling around delivery presents. We spent some time discussing different Christmas traditions and finding out how Christmas is celebrated around the world. Our woods sessions were spent gathering resources for making natural decorations and all the children enjoyed creating transient art using leaves and pine cones. The Cock Inn Well folks, that’s another year done and dusted and what a year it was. On top of the Russian Ukraine war we now have a huge conflict in Gaza. Its all dreadful really and not great for the world economy, unless one is involved in the Defense Industry! The costs are huge and yet to be realized however we have already suffered from higher energy costs, high food inflation and a shudder in the property market. Still, the pundits are suggesting that the outlook for 2024 is better and improvements all round. Lets see, but let’s not all breathe in for too long. You may have seen from the local press that we are trying to improve our business here with the pending acquisition of the house next door in order that we can enlarge our ‘guest house’ accommodation. Hadleigh is really short of overnight accommodation and while there are a number of holiday cottages and the like spread around the district, there is not too much centrally. We receive many calls especially during the summer months from people seeking accommodation. It’s a win-win for everyone as people staying in central Hadleigh will no doubt visit other businesses too. Hopefully the planning committee at Babergh will hear the application early in 2024 and we are fairly confident our proposals will be viewed positively. Both the pub and the house are listed and there is no alterations included in the consent, which again hopefully simplifies the application. Local Pubs like The Cock Inn have to constantly reinvent themselves to stay competitive and useful to the local community. It’s a tough industry sector as costs have increased beyond imagination, partially due to the Covid overhang. We said sport events were few and far between in December, well they are just as scarce in January. Congratulations to Ipswich Town FC as they occupy second place in the Championship, at the time of writing. Some terrific results thus far this season and we could well see the Tractor Boys winning automatic promotion to the Premier League. Now wouldn’t that be wonderful! The Premier Football League provides much of the months entertainment with the bigger clubs joining the FA Cup from 6th January. As we reach the league halfway point its an open contest at the top. Man City have had a few hiccups but look to have settled, Arsenal and Liverpool are thereabouts but Spurs seem to have fallen away while Aston Villa are firing on all fours. TV picks live at the pub include Liverpool v Newcastle on New Years day and a thriller with West Ham v Brighton on the 2nd. The FA Cup 3rd Round tie to watch is Arsenal v Liverpool on Sunday 7th and you will be able to watch that on our Giant Screen at 4.30pm. European football resumes with Champions league Round of 16 matches on 13th/14th February with the draw taking place on 18th December. Man Utd and Newcastle are out with Arsenal and Man City flying the England flag. The Europa League & Conference restarts in February too and it looks like West Ham, Brighton, Liverpool and Villa will all progress. Great news! There is no F1 Grand Prix action until March and the Rugby 6 Nations starts in early February. If your stumped India play England at Cricket (1st Test) at the end of January. Live music continues through January with the popular Adam Harrod entertaining you on Sunday 14th at 3pm. Saturday 20th sees the return of the ever talented band ‘The Blaggers’ playing great sounds from The Beatles, Monkees, REM, ELO, Fleetwood Mac and more. On Sunday 28th we welcome Jax Deacon from the Band Jax & Co making his debut at the Cock as a soloist. The fun starts at 3pm through till 6pm with a host of your favourite songs from days gone by. Our January Tuesday Night events include Buskers on the 2nd, Pub Quiz on the 9th and our Open Mic on the 16th. All with 8pm start times. And…don’t forget our ‘Early Bird’ drink offers weekdays 12-2pm and 5-7pm. Remember too that our ‘Double Up’ promo on branded spirits is available all day every day. We now open at 11am on weekends too! The Cock Inn, 89 George Street, Hadleigh Tel 01473 941049 • Facebook: The Cock Inn Hadleigh Gang

Have you been to your GP or a secondary care dermatologist only to be told they’re “cosmetic” and not treated on the NHS? In short, cryotherapy is a procedure that uses extreme cold to destroy tissue. The Benefits of Cryotherapy Treatment with CryoPen are pinpoint accuracy, quick & pain free, safe and proven technology, no anaesthetic needed, treats blemishes from 1mm to 10mm in size, safe for use on the face & eyes. NewYou Pensions can seem complex, but they are too important to ignore. I have had several conversations in the last few weeks that have brought home how important it is that we all plan for the future. Whilst pensions can seem complicated, when you have the right advice, they can make a huge difference to your future financial security. You may have accumulated a number of pensions and would like to understand what they all mean, or you may have it all completely under control but want to make sure you are not missing out on anything. Whatever is driving you to review your financial arrangements it is really important to get the right advice. Make sure you speak to someone who is qualified to give advice in this area, it is too important not to. Pensions don’t have to be daunting, and many of us are due a tax cut at the start of 2024, maybe you could consider utilising some of that towards your retirement planning? If you would benefit from a no obligation chat with a local financial adviser based in Hadleigh feel free to call us. Hadleigh Cycling Club AGM It was great to have many members and guests joining us at the AGM and Christmas Dinner. The Committee is largely unchanged with almost everyone happy to continue to support the club through their existing roles and we welcome the addition of Claire and James to the committee as the new Social Secretary and Parent Rep. Ciaran has also officially taken on the role as Young Rider Rep. Congratulations go to Denny who won the Junior Club Person Award this year in what we considered as a tightly contested year – Well done Denny! The Club has commented on the Hadleigh Neighbourhood Plan consultation. It proposed that Hadleigh Town Council consider the Healthy Streets approach to assessing the High Street. Details can be found at: https://www.healthystreets.com/ Healthy Streets believe that “every decision we make about our built environment, however small, is an opportunity to deliver better places for people to live in and thereby improve their health”. Whilst as a Club we promote cycling, we recognise that Hadleigh would be better place to live if the High Street was easy to cross for pedestrians and it didn’t carry such a large volume of traffic making it feel unsafe and noisy. In addition, we pressed for more effort to link the current and future out-oftown housing developments to the rest of the town. 3-, 4- and 5-bedroom houses at Weavers Meadow, near the bypass, advertise “a range of amenities close to hand” with a car symbol. The website then lists all the towns out of Hadleigh you can travel to by car, with one passing reference to “good local bus services(!)”. No mention of walking or cycling to the town centre or schools. Is it conceivable that a new resident could walk or cycle a mile rather than jump in a car? The Club runs a social ride on Sundays usually starting at 9am from The George and there is a café stop. The rides are weather dependent - if in doubt, check our Facebook page @hadleighcyclingclub X/Twitter @HadleighCycling Instagram hadleighcc or www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk

Mulled Wine and a Gingerbread Man Free mulled wine, a gingerbread man and bargain prices all contributed to a convivial atmosphere inside The Thrift Shop during the recent seasonal street market. Given the sub-zero temperatures outside, the mulled wine was exceptionally well received. This was reflected in the generous donations of over £80 from imbibers. Thanks to the generosity of manager, Adam Ormston, at Huws Gray/Buildbase, master carpenter, Paul Dutton, was able to create a Christmas tree for the shop window and a wooden faceless gingerbread man for customers to peer through for their selfies. A large jute coffee sack, courtesy of Jo at Paddy and Scotts, was also a welcome addition to one of the shop’s festive window displays. A big thank you to our regular shoppers and the many newcomers who visited the shop that day, spent their money and made it such an enjoyable, lively occasion. The volunteers who manned the shop also deserve a round of applause for lasting the day when it wasn’t much warmer inside than out. The record takings will enable owner, Barbara Boyd, to continue sponsoring many local worthwhile causes like the Christmas Present Trust, and Shelley Riding for the Disabled, to name just a few. Wishing all our customers a happy, healthy New Year when we hope to see you again. JD

A new painting for St Mary’s Church, Raydon On Sunday 26th November, during Morning Service, His Honour John Devaux, representing Suffolk’s Lord Lieutenant, unveiled a painting of the Royal Arms of King Charles III in St Mary’s Church Raydon. The painting takes a place on the bare west wall of the church where once there had been a gallery. David Truzzi Franconi was the artist who carried out the commission, made possible by a grant from the Suffolk Historic Churches Trust.

Advice Column: Winter Fuel Bills

I am a single parent with two kids, and I’m really worried about how I’ll afford to pay my energy bills when I have to start putting the heating and lights on more now winter is here. At the moment I just about have enough money to cover my bills but there is nothing left over. The thought of getting into debt keeps me awake at night but the idea of my children being cold and possibly unwell as a result is just unbearable. What can I do?”

You are not alone - a record number of people came to Citizens Advice with energy debt in the first four months of 2023 (32,400) - a 112% increase on the same period in 2020 (15,200). There are things you can do to feel in control when it comes to your energy bills. There are some simple tips to help save money on your energy bills. They won’t cover all the extra costs, but they can make a difference: Ŏ Check your thermostat: A room temperature between 18°C and 21°C is ideal for most people. Try turning your thermostat down by one degree within this range – it could save you around £115 a year. If a medical condition means you need a warmer home, ask your GP what room temperature you should aim for. Ŏ Keep the heat in: Check your home for any gaps in the doors, windows and floors. Blocking any holes where you could get a draught could save you around £30 a year. It is important to allow for some ventilation as without it mould and damp can form. Ŏ Turn off anything you’re not using: Turning your appliances, like TVs and washing machines, off instead of leaving them on standby could save around £60 a year. Turning off lights when you’re not using them – even if it’s just off for a few seconds - could save around £25 a year. Ŏ Consider using LED lightbulbs, which cost less to run. Ŏ Watch your water usage: Cutting your shower time by just one minute can make a difference. If everyone in a four-person household with a water meter did this, they could save around £75 a year. If you’re struggling to afford your energy bills, you might be able to get support from the government or your energy supplier. The first step is to contact your supplier to find out what they can offer. You may be eligible for benefits including the Warm Home Discount, Cold Weather Payments or the Household Support Fund, find out more about these on our website. For more information visit the Citizens Advice website at www.citizensadvice.org.uk or call Sudbury and South Suffolk Citizens Advice on 01787 321400 and leave a message and someone will call you back when available. We will attempt three times to call you back, so please expect a call from a withheld number. Alternatively, contact us via email at advice@sudburycab.org.uk or by using the contact facility on our website, https://www.sudburycab.org.uk/contact We are providing advice by telephone and email Monday – Thursday, 10am – 3pm.

Last Chance for Parents to Claim Free Tree Before January

Thinking of replacement windows, doors, fascia, soffits or conservatory?

THEN CALL US FIRST!!

Applications for a popular free tree scheme for new parents who welcomed arrivals in 2023, will close on 10 January. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ Tree for Life scheme is open to all families in the districts who have or are welcoming a newborn, or newly adopted child, between 1 January and 31 December 2023. The annual initiative offers parents the chance to mark their arrival by planting a tree. Applications can be made via the councils’ websites at www.midsuffolk.gov.uk/w/tree-forlife or www.babergh.gov.uk/w/tree-for-life Parents who may have lost a child during the same period are also able to apply for a remembrance tree. It aims to benefit families, communities and the environment by boosting tree coverage across the district. Having been running for several years, the scheme has seen the councils give out well over a thousand trees, with more than 200 families applying in 2022. Also being open to those without a garden, a selection of the trees continue to be planted at key locations in the districts including Needham Lake, Shotley Golden Wood, Broom Hill in Hadleigh, Gallowsfield Wood in Haughley and Sproughton Millennium Green. Sam Evans, who previously applied for a tree for her son Harrison, said: “It's a really special scheme, even if you don’t have space in your garden, you can plant it locally and visit your tree. “Harrison is such an outdoorsy boy; he loves being outside. He’s always shown a real interest in the garden, in the plants and the trees. It’s lovely to have the tree in our garden as something sentimental for the family. “As parents, we’re aware of the benefits trees bring, but being able to teach that to little ones with this hands-on experience, brings it all together.” Each year, applicants are provided with expert help on picking their tree and how to care for it. Cllr Daniel Potter, Babergh District Council’s cabinet member for environment, said: “Year on year, our Tree for Life scheme proves to be incredibly popular with new parents and it is a special way for both us and them to mark their little one’s arrival. If you are eligible this year, please do make sure you apply to claim your free tree. Not only does it help support our climate change and biodiversity ambitions, but also gives families a reason to spend time in the garden planting and nurturing their tree for years to come.” Cllr Tim Weller, Mid Suffolk District Council’s cabinet member for environment, culture and wellbeing, said: “This scheme is our way of celebrating each new life in Mid Suffolk, while supporting our biodiversity by increasing local tree coverage for generations to come. I would encourage all new parents in the district to apply and join more than a thousand other families who are already enjoying their trees.” All trees must be planted within the two districts. Applications are processed throughout the year, with eligible applicants invited to choose and collect their tree.

Ebony’s Blog

Ready for an Autumn clean up?

Life at The Shelley Centre The last term has gone so quickly with lots of our riders doing really well on the new horses – that’s when the weather has allowed them to ride outside. We’ve seen torrential rain, winds and then frost! When riding in the arena isn’t possible I’m in constant use, being tucked up in a lovely warm, dry room. As a reminder, or for those new to my blog, I’m Ebony, a mechanical simulator. I give important therapy and confidence to our riders when riding my real-life friends is not possible. Before the term ended our helpers enjoyed three fun events. Firstly, our Bingo Night, kindly hosted by Hadliegh Football Club, which raised around £800 for the centre. Then it was the Helpers’ Christmas Supper and Quiz, at which our Chairman, Jan Derbyshire, presented gifts to Lyn Bensusan our retiring Stable Manager (photo attached). Lyn has been at the centre for as long as anyone can remember, and long before I arrived. She will be missed but has been replaced by Abi, who is doing a wonderful job of keeping my friends fit, happy and willing to do their important job of helping our riders. Our third event before the end of term was the Christmas Carol Service. This was held in the stable yard which is all decorated with lights, trees and tinsel. All my horsey friends come into their stables, and are blessed by Father Jo during the service. Some of our riders dress up for the nativity scene and others hold candles for the horses. It’s a magical time – it was just a pity the weather wasn’t a bit better! The holidays see our horsey volunteers working hard to keep the ponies fed and exercised. Unlike me, my friends need looking after every day, even on Christmas Day. We always space for more helpers and would love to welcome even more fresh faces at the centre. Please contact us if you would like to know more – you don’t have to be horsey, just willing to learn and kind. You can find out more at www.shelleyrda.com. Parking Back on the Agenda for Babergh as it Seeks to Balance Books ‘An increasingly difficult challenge’ – parking is back on the agenda for Babergh District Council, as it seeks to balance the books, support its high streets, and put the brakes on climate change. Subsidising the councils’ current three-hour free parking in its car parks in villages and towns including Sudbury, Hadleigh and Lavenham, cost the council approximately £425K this year, with the cost set to increase further next year. With the council facing a budget gap of at least £1.5m next year, it says it can no longer afford the subsidy if it is to continue delivering other essential services for its residents and communities. A paper is now expected to go to Babergh cabinet in January recommending a targeted consultation with affected towns and parishes to develop options for changes to parking tariffs next year. Babergh leader Cllr David Busby said: “Like all local authorities, we are facing tough financial decisions for the year ahead and find ourselves facing an increasingly difficult challenge. “We need to balance our books; we need to support our high streets and town centre businesses by encouraging trade; and we need to encourage more sustainable travel in order reduce congestion in our towns, improve air quality and tackle climate change. “Thankfully, these things are not mutually exclusive. By introducing a revised tariff that includes short-term charges that are as low as possible compared to other authorities, we can continue to attract visitors to our towns and by working together with our towns and parishes, ensure shoppers and workers have access to the right spaces in the right places – increasing space turnover and offering more sustainable travel options, particularly for those simply ‘popping in’ to the high street.” The new tariff would remove the burden of subsiding current ‘free’ parking to taxpayers, including non-motorists, as well as helping to balance the budget and generating income ringfenced for reinvestment into parking and sustainable travel options for the district. “This will allow us to invest in our car parks to create a positive first and last impression of towns and villages for visitors, as well as being in a position to do more to promote and encourage sustainable travel,” Cllr Busby added. The introduction of short-term parking charges was initially agreed in February 2021, with implementation initially delayed until January 2022, and then further postponed following a cabinet reshuffle, before this year’s local election and the inauguration of the new administration. A new joint parking strategy for both Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils has been agreed since, in September 2022, based on feedback from residents, town and parish councils as well as other community groups and partners. As part of the strategy consultation, some 58% of respondents said they supported, or strongly supported the introduction of flexible parking tariffs, particularly if regularly benchmarked to reflect the economy of the local area. The charges would only apply to council-run car parks, with existing on-street parking remaining unchanged and blue badge holders still able to park in the council’s car parks for free. Babergh District Council also continues to work with Suffolk County Council, as the highways authority, to prioritise blue badge parking for anyone who is mobility impaired next to main amenities within its town and village centres. Pending approval of the proposed approach at Babergh cabinet meeting on Tuesday 9 January, officers will meet with town and parish councils to discuss local options early in the New Year, ahead of a further report going back to cabinet in April. Meanwhile, councillors on the Overview and Scrutiny committee will also consider the proposed approach alongside wider draft budget proposals in the New Year.

Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Council meeting of 29th November were: • Public Forum Michael Woods, Chairman of the Playing Field Committee, put the case for continued funding for the Playing Field; although reserves seemed high, he said they could quickly disappear if play apparatus had to be replaced. • District Council Cllr Ward responded to questions raised at the previous meeting. In response to a comment that admin costs for CIFCO were high and could perhaps be streamlined, he would discuss this with the CIFCO Board. He also confirmed that CIL contributions from developers were handled separately by Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils. The consultation on the future of Babergh and Mid Suffolk districts was now closed. The Joint Local Plan had been adopted by both councils and Babergh was now starting to look at the budget for 2024-25, which would go to Cabinet in February. • Budget & Precept A draft budget and recommendations from the working party had been circulated before the meeting. It was agreed to continue to make allowances to the Playing Field, Village Hall and PCC for 2024-25. The draft budget for 2024-25 was approved; there would be no increase to the precept. • Speeding and traffic calming The recommendations from the working party were noted. It was agreed that the existing SID should be converted to solar power and that a second SID would be purchased. • Cabinet in Upper Layham Following the appearance of a large and unsightly cabinet on the grass at the corner of Mill Lane by a broadband provider, the Clerk had contacted the company for comment; a similar cabinet in Capel St Mary had been removed following concerns raised by the PC. She would also contact James Cartlidge MP. • New dog refuse bin The Clerk had purchased a new bin for the Playing Field, as the old metal one was rusty and had lost its handle. • Future meeting dates Dates for 2024 PC meetings were agreed: Wednesday 10 January Wednesday 21 February Wednesday 27 March Wednesday 24 April (Annual Parish Meeting) Wednesday 29 May (AGM) Wednesday 26 June Wednesday 31 July Wednesday 25 September Wednesday 30 October Wednesday 27 November

Social Club In November we had a very entertaining magic lantern show given by Richard Rigby of the Magic Lantern Society and his colleague David Soanes. Richard and David entranced us with traditional narrations accompanied by slides. The magic lantern and slides were of great interest. In December Celia Graham of the National Trust shared her insights into life at Ickworth House with a particular emphasis on servant life. We finished our year with a shared Christmas lunch, quizzes and games.

Layham Festive Fair - 9th December 2023 Thank you to all of you who supported our event in so many different ways and helped make our Festive Fair such a success. We had a fantastic array of raffle prizes, including donations from the Marquis, the Queen’s Head, D C Tree Services and Morrisons. We owe a special thank you to Santa and to the Hadleigh Co-op for helping to fill his sack; to Father Jo on the Water to Wine Stall and for his efficient distribution of raffle prizes; and most of all we thank the residents of Layham who volunteered to help, made donations, ran stalls, and spent their money! The funds raised will go towards local needs – more information to follow! Layham Events Group - layhamevents@gmail.com

The Village Hall The Village Hall Management Committee meets regularly. Recent improvements to the Hall include two heaters in the toilets with funding kindly donated by the Layham Events Group. We are grateful for their continued support. The Hall has been busy lately with various Christmas activities and parties and if you wish to make a private booking then drop Rosey an email on rosey.emma@btinternet.com and she will be pleased to help.

Allotments There are two vacant allotments in Layham at the moment (off Gardener's Close in Upper Layham). If you are interested, the annual rent is £10, plus a share of the water bills. If you would like to know more, please contact Jane Cryer on 07920 713940 or email: layhampc@gmail.com This is a good time to take over an allotment - to get the winter digging done.

Reserve Mermaids Wanted Are you a warm water person? Prefer not to prance around a public pool in your cossie? Not an Olympian swimmer? Happy to swim now and again rather than every week? Then you may be interested in becoming a reserve for a small friendly group of Mermaids on a Tuesday and or a Thursday at Lett’s Pool, near Hadleigh. For further details of times and cost of these private sessions please contact me, Jan Devey:- 01473 827 091 or deveys@btinternet.com. To view the pool visit www.lettsswim.com.

Babergh and Mid Suffolk councils adopt joint local plan - Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils have formally adopted their Joint Local Plan – the blueprint for the districts’ future development until 2037 – which will provide clarity for communities and developers. The JLP has been designed to ensure residents and communities have sufficient housing, employment and inward investment, environment and heritage is protected, and the infrastructure is in place for healthy communities Jane Caruthers and thriving towns. All documentation involved in the process, including the Planning Inspectorate report, is available on the council’s website at www.babergh.gov.uk/jointlocalplan. Storm Babet flooding and financial help - People who experienced exceptional property flooding during Storm Babet are now receiving financial support. All reports of property flooding need to be submitted via the Suffolk County Council reporting tool, the first step to receiving a potential payout. Households and businesses that Simon Dowling suffered internal flooding between 19 and 25 October 2023 due to Storm Babet may be eligible for: • A grant (£500 for homes and £2,500 per business) to assist with initial recovery costs • Households and businesses that suffered internal flooding due to Storm Babet may be eligible for 100% discount to council tax / business rates for a minimum of 3 months • Flooded property owners will also be able to apply for up to £5,000 to help make their homes and businesses more resilient to future flooding. Suffolk County Council is working to set this scheme up at the earliest opportunity, but it is not currently available If you have experienced flooding to your property because of Storm Babet, you need to: 1. Visit: Suffolk County Council - ReportIT 2. Click on: ‘Report It’ 3. Then click: ‘Drainage and Flooding’ 4. Then click: ‘Flooding inside residential / non-residential property’ 5. Please include as much information as you have; there is also an option to upload photos. 6. Once your report has been submitted, Suffolk County Council officers will contact you to gather further information and prioritise those locations that meet the criteria for an official investigation. 7. Someone from BDC will then contact you to arrange payment, if eligible. If you can’t submit your report online, please call 0345 606 6171. Council tenants and repairs - Babergh has allocated £943,000 from reserves to tackle the backlog of repairs to council properties. Inspections are under way, and a programme of repairs prioritising the most urgent is being drawn up. If you have an emergency or urgent repair to report, in office hours call 0300 123 4000 (option 3); outside office hours, call 0808 168 7794. Emergencies include: blocked drains; total loss of power, water or heating; dangerous structural faults including a leaking roof; and making a home secure. Routine repairs which are not urgent can be requested online at: https://www.babergh.gov.uk/w/request-a-repair. Call for land to support nature recovery - Babergh District Council, working with the Woodland Trust, is calling for land which could be planted on or improved for nature. Of particular interest is land of less agricultural value, near or next to land that may already be good for wildlife (woods, wetlands, meadows, heathland), or that can help join up other existing habitats, helping wildlife to move more easily through the landscape. Local private landowners – such as farmers, community organisations, individuals, and businesses – can play a key role in reaching our target coverage of 15%. The council can offer support and advice about how to manage new habitats, or even generate new income from it through possible ‘habitat bank’ and carbon offsetting opportunities. Those with available land can register their initial interest by emailing biodiversity@baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk. ‘Constable Country is not for sale’ - Babergh District Council has restated its objections to a new row of electricity pylons cutting through the countryside after the Chancellor pledged in the recent Autumn Statement to reduce energy bills for those impacted. But the council’s acting leader, Cllr John Ward (Ind), said: “Constable Country is not for sale – once the landscape has been industrialised, nothing can compensate for this loss.” BDC’s deputy leader, Cllr Deborah Saw (Green), added: "We recognise the national importance of strategic energy infrastructure for the transition to net zero, but believe there is a better option: a strategic off-shore grid, which will minimise onshore infrastructure and the associated impacts of that.” Earlier this year, both Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils wrote to the Government restating their objections to the planned Norwich to Tilbury pylon line. If you have concerns that you want to raise with us, or if you want to get involved in tackling any of the issues we’ve mentioned, please get in touch at: Jane.Carruthers@babergh.gov.uk 07514 951196 Simon.Dowling@babergh.gov.uk 07514 951185

A Big Thank You……. 2023 saw Hadleigh Physiotherapy celebrate 10 years since opening their doors at 111 George Street in Hadleigh and 20 years of being in private practice. To celebrate, Directors Will and Lottie Dykes hosted a Charity Dinner and Dance back in September last year, welcoming over 200 clients, family, and friends to join them at Trinity Park to raise money for the East Anglian Air Ambulance. The evening consisted of a raffle and auction, with plenty of dancing and merriment along the way. Through the amazing support of many local businesses and clients, kindly donating raffle, and auction prizes, an incredible £11,333.05 was raised. This amount will fund three emergency missions by the Air Ambulance and represents a tiny percentage of the massive £18million required to run the service annually. Will and Lottie recently had the privilege of being invited along to meet with the team at their base in Norwich for a cheque presentation. They got to tour the state of the art building and understand the enormity of running this amazing service which has helped, and continues to help, so many of our local community. A huge thank you to all those who have supported Hadleigh Physiotherapy over the years and best wishes for 2024.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

Have you made any resolutions as you hang the new calendar, flip through the seed catalogues and holiday brochures or search for evening classes? Maybe you want to turn over a new leaf, eat less, exercise more – or how about volunteering once a week? A few hours of your time can make a huge difference to charitable organisations struggling to provide much needed support in the community. Charity shops, food banks, befriending services, hospitals need help, or if you happen to love animals, the rescued dogs, cats and rabbits at SESAW need you too. Volunteering is a two-way street, your gift is more than compensated by the feelgood factor. Our human carers go home tired, sometimes dirty but happy to have spent time with the animals. They are happiest of all when they see people or families going home with their new pets. If you would like to volunteer at SESAW, please contact me at: sesawken@gmail.com I’ll ask one of my humans to call you to discuss how we could help each other. If you plan to share your life with a new pet, do visit SESAW. At the time of writing, we still have kittens in need of new homes. We are open by appointment only due to our annual winter shutdown so please email or leave a message on the answerphone and someone will get back to you. Hadleigh doesn’t have to flood! A cursory glance at any OS map will reveal quite a surprise about our beloved River Brett that flows through Hadleigh, Layham and Shelley, before joining the River Stour. Just before it enters Hadleigh (Peyton Hall on the map), it is a stream, not a river! As trade flourished in Suffolk from the 7th century onwards, peaking with the cloth industry in the 16th century, this must have provided a challenging problem. Trade was very reliant upon water and in particular, the many water mills that require rivers keep them operational. (Suffolk boasted 200 water mills in the 16th century). With only a stream running into Hadleigh, Hadleigh had a problem – not enough water! The problem of course was easily resolved – all you need to do is block or dam a waterway, water will then back up behind it, then you end up with a decent size river to operate the mills. With the introduction of the sluice gates along the River Brett, this is what happened – and why we now have a full river as opposed to a stream. Some of our wonderful historic mills are still with us today, a reminder of Suffolk’s glorious past, although of course, they are not used to supplement the cloth or any other trade any more. However, the sluice gates along the River Brett are still operational and are still keeping the river channels full. This has been in evidence very recently during Storm Babet. The gates are kept closed during the winter for the majority of the time, resulting in a continual high water level. Then when we have storms, or even just heavy rain, the River Brett bursts its banks and floods local properties. I have attended a couple of meetings in Hadleigh since Storm Babet – one with the Environment Agency and another with the Council. The focus seems to be on how we cope with flooding as opposed to how we prevent it. Now these intentions are well meaning but I have a more draconian idea – stop Hadleigh, Layham and Shelley flooding in the first place! I am not an expert but based upon my experience of how to stop my bath flooding (either turn the taps off or take the plug out), my proposal would be to ‘take the plugs out’. If anybody has the knowledge and expertise to answer the following question, I would be extremely grateful. If all the sluice gates were left fully open from 1 October to 1 March each year, wouldn’t the River Brett just return to being a stream like it was originally? Then when we do have a storm or copious amounts of rain, it would start to fill the virtually empty river channel, then flow through to the River Stour uninterrupted and nobody would get flooded? This idea doesn’t cost any money either. All views welcome. Graeme Jones

Hadleigh Garden Club’s Christmas Quiz And Social Event WHAT A GREAT EVENING! This event was very well attended, and it would seem, thoroughly enjoyed by all. The quiz put together by Fiona and Nicola was a great success with some fun parts from a variety of questions, general knowledge, weird and funny music and then a feely section of recognising items in a sealed bag and lastly, of course, a few gardening questions. The finger buffet was provided by the committee members with mulled wine, soft drinks and the usual tea and coffee after. A special thank you goes to the spouses of committee members who provide food for the buffet too. The overall winner of the monthly competition, Kate Banks, was presented with the trophy by Maggie Miller acting Chairperson and Kate will hold this for a year. The raffle was well supported and enjoyed by the winners, two lovely hampers were put together by Dave and Evie who have consistently provided a good raffle every month for which we thank them. GARDEN CLUB 2024 WILL CHANGE TO THE THIRD MONDAY OF THE MONTH with Fay Jones, The Woodland Haberdasher talking on “Conifers and Pines”. The location is unchanged i.e. the Guild Room opposite St Mary’s Church at 7.30pm. The competition is a photograph of your garden taken in 2023, the usual raffle and tea/coffee. £2 for Members and £4 for Guests. For more information contact: hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com or Tel: Angie on 07946 744457

In Memory of Bryan Haylock Bryan, who died last January, was well known as the owner of the Idler Bookshop and as a talented artist. He also wrote humorous verse and prose often based on items from newspapers. For 16 years he was a member of the Untapped Writers Group who presented their work once a year at the Headgate Theatre in Colchester. His friends have collected some of his writings and cartoons into a book called "What ho!". It is on sale at The Idler, priced at £5 and the profits will go to the Friends of St. Mary's Church. This is a short piece from the book:The Street Musician 'Do you play by ear?' he asked. As I strummed my lyre alfresco. Sometimes 'ere,' I smiled and said, 'and sometimes outside Tesco.'

Hadleigh Community Forum Tuesday 12 December 2023 1 WELCOME: The Chair welcomed everyone 2 REPORT OF THE LAST MEETING: Accepted 3 MATTERS ARISING: (i) Lindsay reported that The Flood Action Group meeting had successfully taken place and a committee had been formed. Small clusters of the Brett have been identified (Ann Beaumont Way, Bridge Street, The Deanery/Guildhall, Duke Street, Tinkers Lane, Benton Street, Raven Way, Benton End and Priory Meadows) and each allocated a river warden. A central group will be set up to liaise between the wardens all agencies, especially the Environment Agency & HEAT with whom there is a good synergy, the Town Council and first responders and will be looking at flood resilience, insurers etc (ii) Richard updated his Housing Development report of last month: Hopkins Homes is in advanced discussions with the BDC and SCC regarding a 35-acre site to the west of Castle Road for about 350 dwellings. The main vehicular access is proposed as either a new right turn junction or roundabout on to the A1071 Hadleigh Bypass. They are also in discussion over another site adjacent to Aldham Mill Hill and Oxford Rd estate. Ballymore Developers and HTC met to discuss developing two large fields either side of Hook Lane, with new access off Pond Hall Road. The site seems to have an area of about 30 hectares [74 acres] and it assumed some 2-300 dwellings will be proposed with some sort of out-of-town leisure centre and playing fields on agricultural land currently owned by SCC. The potential loss of Hook Lane is of major concern. Planning Permission is adjudged on both national and local policies and then on material considerations, so any objections to such housing schemes will need to be based upon well-researched and supported planning grounds. 106 payments may cover a building (for example, a new leisure centre), but does not cover any future running or funding for such a service. These two new sites could add 1400 to the already agreed 1000 extra residents which means current infrastructure (medical, educational & community services etc) will be seriously overloaded with no plans to expand or support them. 4 STANDARD UPDATES 4.1 HADLEIGH TOWN COUNCIL (HTC) There was no report. 4.2 BABERGH & MID SUFFOLK DISTRICT COUNCIL (BDC) The short-term parking issue has again raised it head due to budgetary constraints. The Councillors present will all work to keep it free. They reported that there will possibly be a short (four or five questions) questionnaire for those using the car

parks for which there will be no cost as, if it goes ahead, it will be conducted by the Councillors themselves, but Mr Young directed them to the results of the much larger survey of some 34 questions, which was carried out by BDC last year and the Hadleigh Transport Study of February this year, which should address all their questions. It was noted that charges for parking, in addition to meters on side streets it killed businesses in Ipswich and we do not want the same thing to happen in Hadleigh. Funding applications have been successful for the Porch Project and for Benton End for kitchen equipment. Funds are available for repairs to council houses. Part 1 of the Joint Local Plan has been approved. Library services public consultation on both libraries and mobile libraries is open until Friday 26 January. Please visit: www.suffolk.gov.uk/LibraryConsultation 4.3 VISIT HADLEIGH Planning is underway for 2024. 4.4 HADLEIGH & BOXFORD PATIENT PARTICIPATION GROUP (PPG) A full report was given to the meeting and can be found in the PPG column in each month’s Hadleigh Community News. Grateful thanks and huge appreciation were offered by the whole meeting for the outstanding service offered by the Hadleigh & Boxford Group Practice. We are very blessed to have such an exceptional practice in our town. Four of the staff will be running the London Marathon in April – to sponsor them, go to Just Giving: Team Hadleigh. 4.5 ST MARYS CHURCH Refurbishment of the Vestry is due to be signed off tomorrow. It looks stunning. There is an Open Day for everyone to come in and see it from 10am-4pm on Friday 19 January. The new PA system in partially installed and will be completed by the end of January when the speakers will be available. December sees the end of the English lessons for Ukrainians in church as numbers have dropped off considerably for the last few months. Pop-Ups continue on the 2nd and 4th Weds from 12 – 2pm (10th and 24th in January 2024). Another Variety Show will take place on 6th January 7pm. Drinks & nibbles from 6.30pm. Tickets £10 from the Deanery Tower Office. On Fri 26 January there will be an overnight sleepover, for over 18’s, in St Mary’s – all welcome if you are brave enough ! – raising money for “Shelter”. There will be no heat, but there will be breakfast available on the Saturday morning. Details from the church office. Friends of Bryan Haylock have put some of his works together into a book on sale for £5 from The Idler. Proceeds from sale of the book go to Friends of St Mary’s who help look after our magnificent mediaeval building. 4.6 HEAT (Hadleigh Environmental Action Team) The AGM was well attended. Progress to HEAT becoming a CIL (Community Interest Company) is progressing. HEAT is working with BDC and SCC to reduce Hadleigh’s carbon footprint and aim to set up a community energy scheme. A newer initiative, and very much at the learning stage, is that of Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) credits where the current set aside payments to farmers and landowners is looking at being replaced with BNG credits. This is complicated and wide ranging and organisations like HEAT may or may not have a role to play. A Nappy Library is being set up in Hadleigh to support families who wish to use fewer disposable nappies and other personal products. Climate cafés continue – meetings on 20 Jan and 22 Feb 2-4pm. For more details about any activities, contact hadleighheat@hotmail.com 4.7 BENTON END An application to the National Lottery Heritage Fund will be made in January. Further funding will be needed to support staffing and education. It is hoped to find an East Anglian based Champion to assist - help needed please ! May and June are filling for group visits and, throughout the year, students & tutors from the Field Studies Council at Flatford will be spending time at Benton End as part of their painting courses. Contact matthew@bentonend.co.uk to enquire about/organise visits/tours for a per-person donation. Parking is currently extremely limited. Plans are in progress to address this thanks to the purchase of a neighbouring property which, it is hoped, will play a significant role in the development of Benton End house and gardens. 5 AOB Any items for AOB should be notified to Jess Janas (jessicanevard@btinternet.com) or the Chairman BEFORE the meeting please. 5.1 Jane Snowdon has been looking into the possibility of organising a banking hub in Hadleigh as we no longer have a High Street bank but, as we already have ATMs at both the Co-Op and Morrisons, as well as a post office it is thought we will be ineligible. 5.2 Chairs for 2024: 9 January Paul Hodgkin, 13 February Rickaby Shearly Sanders, 12 March Jane Snowdon, 9 April Richard Fletcher The meeting closed at 5.16 NEXT MEETING: Tuesday 9 January 2024 @ 4:15pm. Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. Chair: Paul Hodgkin

Hadleigh Hares Athletic Club once again hosted the annual road races on 19th November. This year the Turners Blinds and Shutters 10 mile, the John Chisnall 5 mile and the Plant Parts 2k Junior Fun Run were sold out well in advance making for a really busy race day. In contrast to the heavy rain of the previous week, the day was dry, bright and relatively warm with a moderate breeze to keep the runners cool. First off at 10 o’clock was the junior race, once again kindly sponsored by Plant Parts Ltd of Crockatt Road, Hadleigh. The two kilometre course took the runners aged between four and sixteen along the riverside walk and onto the muddy tracks beyond. Nobody seemed to mind the mud, though, and everyone came back happy for a well deserved medal. Special thanks to Plant Parts director, Richard Finch, who once again came down to present the prizes. This year, the senior races were started by guest speaker Tawanda Chiwira, the double Olympic Zimbabwean 400m runner. We were delighted that he agreed to come and give some sage words of encouragement to the athletes, award the trophies and man the microphone welcoming the athletes back to the finish line. The ten mile event, once again sponsored by Turners Blinds and Shutters, has a reputation as being a challenging run with some tough hills and often imperfect road conditions. It remains, however, a popular fixture in the running calendar, attracting some top level athletes. This year’s races were won by Patrick Hannah of Cambridge Tri Club in a time of 55:04, and Kate Creak of Colchester Harriers in 1:05:00. For the Hares, Brendon Mayer finished in 1:10:25, Joel Bamsey in 1:22:01, Nikki Vince in 1:22:04 second in her age category, Belinda Godbold in 1:24:27 winning her age category, Elaine Turner in 1:24:58, Niel Holloway in 1:28:55, and Fiona Manthorpe in 1:37:44. The John Chisnall 5 Mile race is no less challenging, using, as it does, many of the same roads as the ten mile course. There is, though the added bonus of a long and steep hill right at the start which can take the unprepared by surprise. The course, however, must have suited the male winner as Oliver Hitchcock of Bury St Edmunds Pacers set a new course record with a phenomenal 26:11, or to put it another way a pace of 5:13 per mile. The female winner was Cath Jeffrey, another Bury St Edmunds Pacer who came in at 32:45. For the first time we were able to present a trophy for the first non-binary finisher. Well done to our own Ella Bodsworth who finished with a time of 53:13. Other Hares taking part were Crystal Murray, finishing in 40:09 third in her age group, Nathalie Hooper in 40:25 winning her age group, Ian Bodsworth in 55:01, Julia Bilotta in 57:57 second in her age group, and Tracey Squirrell in 58:02. As a club, the Hares would particularly like to thank, Tawanda for his time and enthusiasm, the local businesses who contributed various excellent spot prizes, Hadleigh United FC for letting us use their facilities again this year, and the residents of Hadleigh and the surrounding area for their patience and understanding. Thank you. We are planning next year’s event for 24th November so keep the date. 2024 will be the club’s 40th anniversary year, so we are hoping to make it better than ever!

News from Whatfield CEVCP School We had a visit from Ofsted in September and I am very pleased to share with you that we received a “Good” rating in all areas. There were many positive comments in the report but there are four of which we are particularly proud. “The school is a calm and caring place for them to learn and make friends. Friendships blossom amidst wide open spaces to play” “Pupils learn an interesting curriculum from skilled teachers” “The school is rightly proud of the work it does to support pupils with special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND) and their families” “Everyone in this school is polite and respectful” If you would like to read the full report it is available online at: https://reports.ofsted.gov.uk/provider/21/124718 We hope that parents, carers and members of the community who came to join us for our nativity performance of Shine Star Shine enjoyed seeing our KS1 children perform and our KS2 assist with narrating and singing. They all did so well and we are extremely proud. We would like to wish all our families and the community a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. A special mention to Mr Plumbly and Mr Waspe for all their continued hard work with the allotment over the years which has provided our children with some fantastic experiences of outdoor learning. Unfortunately, we will no longer be having the allotment but we do hope to have something within school that provides a sensory garden for the children to enjoy. A brief roundup of what our children have been engaged in this half term: Acorn class have been enjoying forest school sessions each Friday this half term and on one of our sessions we made bird feeders. We also made salt dough Christmas decoration that we sold at our Christmas Fayre! Sapling class have also joined in with festive baking and made gingerbread men. Oak Class took part in U11 athletics at Hadleigh High School at the beginning of the month. The children had great results in the individual track races and showed some fabulous skills in the field events. All sport stars came back buzzing, having had an awesome morning! All the children had a walk to the Christmas tree in village and hung homemade decorations. If you would like to have a tour of the school please contact us on 01473 833309 or admin@whatfield.suffolk.sch.uk. “Growing & Learning Together”

Active Suffolk celebrates many across Suffolk at their Active Suffolk Awards 2023 ceremony On Friday 17th November 2023, over 200 guests came together for The Active Suffolk Awards at Trinity Park, Ipswich. As the effects of the pandemic have begun to lessen, it has been fantastic to see that people have become more comfortable getting active once again. Research has shown that activity levels in Suffolk have improved Attendees of The Active Suffolk significantly at both a community Awards 2023 listening to a speech and individual level, and we are by Gareth Davies, Director of thrilled that our event was able to Active Suffolk. offer us an opportunity to celebrate those local individuals, teams, communities, volunteers, professionals, and schools from across the county who have either achieved success or have contributed towards supporting the people of Suffolk to be more active. Gareth Davies, Director of Active Suffolk said: “As always, the calibre of nominations received for the Active Suffolk Awards has surpassed any previous expectations we had. We are incredibly grateful to everyone who has rightfully been recognised for their selfless efforts to support local people to be active and for those who also so richly deserved to have their achievements from across the county of Suffolk celebrated. Our aim at Active Suffolk is to increase physical activity levels across Suffolk, not only to support our physical health but our mental wellbeing too and I believe there is no greater inspiration than those who show their commitment to this in the county. Hadleigh Hares November is a busy month for the Club. Firstly hosting our 2k, 5 and 10 mile in Hadleigh. The 5 and 10 mile race have a reputation for being rather hilly and thankfully after a day of rain on Saturday, the clouds cleared and we had the perfect conditions for the race. Months of preparation by our fabulous Race Directors, Deb and Andrew Stewart, led to a race sell out. The 2k Junior race kicked the morning off with over 80 runners taking part, including 15 of our own juniors. Some very speedy times were recorded and everyone finished with one of our amazing new medals. Meanwhile, the runners of the 5 and 10 mile congregated in the football club carpark to hear some words of wisdom spoken by Zimbabwean Olympian, Tawanda Chiwira. Feeling inspired, runners made their way up to the start in Holbecks Lane eagerly awaiting the start gun. It was a fast start as the final results attested. Flying over the finish of the 5 miles was Oliver Hitchcock of St Edmunds Pacers, who flew in with a time of 00:26:11! Followed by Dominic Hazell-Evans and our own John Scaife. First lady across the line was Cath Jeffrey, also from St Edmunds Pacers, with a time of 00:32:45, followed by Lottie Hitchcock and Katy Deny. Congratulations to Hares runner Nathalie Hooper who ran the 5 mile and came first in her age category and Belinda Godbold in the 10 mile who also came first in her age category. A huge thank you to everyone who helped beforehand and, on the day, to make this event so enjoyable. The following weekend was the Club’s End of Season Celebration at Kersey Mill. Whilst enjoying a very tasty dinner, awards were presented to Club members for a whole host of achievements. This included Triathlon, Cross Country Runner, Marathon Runner and Coaches Award. This year we had a new award, the Special Achievement Award which was presented to Claire Jacobs for her amazing record breaking running in 2023. She had achieved many personal bests and smashed many of our club records. If you would like to join a friendly and supportive running club as a member or a coach you can find out all about us and how to join at www.hadleigh-hares.co.uk

Hadleigh Tennis Club As you can see, we all enjoyed a lovely pre-Christmas Sunday morning club session of tennis followed by coffee and home made mince pies. The weather was kind to us and the sun shone brightly. Hadleigh Tennis Club meets every Sunday from 9.30 throughout the year. Why not blow away those post Christmas blues - come along and join us in January for some fun and exercise.
