Ding-Dong Merrily on High!

Well ok, maybe not ‘on high’ but there will be a great ringing of doorbells on Friday 25th December, as The Christmas Present Trust will be delivering a traditional meal or dietary alternative to anyone in Hadleigh and surrounding areas who, for whatever reason, cannot be with family or friends on Christmas Day. We would normally invite people to be our guests at the Ansell Centre for a meal and entertainment, but due to the COVID pandemic we are unable to do so this year. What we are doing instead is inviting those of you who cannot visit or entertain family or friends on Christmas Day, for whatever reason, to contact us and we can arrange to provide a Christmas meal delivered to your door. An army of volunteers have come forward and will take the meals to your home from the Ansell Centre, where Simon and Sarah Thompson will be doing the cooking. All COVID precautions will be taken at all stages. When serving the meals we will ensure that gloves and masks are worn, all volunteers will also be wearing gloves and masks, and the meals will be left on the doorstep whilst the volunteers step back so that you can be assured there is no risk to you.

We have also been very fortunate to receive a large donation, and some VERY cute teddy bears, from the East of England Co-op. A COVID secure presentation was made outside the Co-op by Events Manager Lynn Warner and Manager Garry Spink.

Sudbury solicitors offer guidance to increasing numbers of bereaved The devastating impact of the Coronavirus pandemic has been highlighted by recent analysis from the Office for National Statistics. Nearly 10% more deaths have been recorded in 2020 up to and including September, compared to the same period in 2019*.

This staggering loss of life means an increased number of husbands, wives, sons and daughters are this year finding themselves in the awful position of grieving for a loved one. At the same time they have to deal with the administration of their loved-one's estate.

It can be a big shock to be notified that you are an Executor upon the death of a loved one. The gravitas of the role and sense of responsibility can seem overwhelming, at an already difficult time. Recognising that an increased number of people are finding themselves dealing with such matters due to the virus (many far sooner than they would have reasonably anticipated), Holmes & Hills Solicitors is offering free initial guidance to Executors*.

The role and responsibilities of Executor The role of Executor is pivotal. Fundamentally, an Executor must handle all aspects of the deceased’s estate and distribute assets in accordance with the Will.

Depending on the nature of the estate – meaning the assets owned by that individual - there are a number steps that must be taken by the executors, including, but not limited to: • Ensuring any property owned by the deceased is secured, as soon as possible; • Taking steps to check if the Will they have is the last Will that the deceased made; • Ascertaining the assets in the estate; • Advising financial institutions of the death and arranging to settle any liabilities; • Applying for a Grant of Probate (if necessary); • Paying any Inheritance Tax and Income Tax that might be due; • Opening an Executor’s bank account to receive estate monies; • Distribute the estate to the beneficiaries under the terms of the Will and checking if they are entitled to receive the monies (i.e. they are not bankrupt); • Checking for unknown creditors.

Risk to Executors It is important that all duties are carried out by the Executor correctly and full records are kept. Holmes & Hills warns that many Executors are not aware that their role carries personal liability in the event a matter is dealt with incorrectly, even if it was an honest mistake.

Lee Sands from Hizzy Property is taking on a challenge to help raise awareness and support for "Lighthouse Womens Aid" in Ipswich The challenge is starting Thursday 3rd December at 7pm and I will be vlogging every run so please follow my progress on our Facebook page... PICTURE OF THE MONTH Building works for new residential units are currently well underway at the former S.C.C. Angel Court care home in Angel Street, opposite Spooners Lane. That care home was completed and opened in 1964. Previously, occupying the site was Angels Square, a ‘L’ shaped terrace of houses, which became known as Poverty Square because of their lack of facilities. Water was drawn from a common pump in the centre of the square.

A further name, and perhaps the earliest known, is Back of Angel Street, shown on an 1836 map of the town, but perhaps the one which became synonymous for those properties in the mid-20th century was Garden City. Happy Christmas to Hadeigh’s drivers Hadleigh Cycling Club would like to offer Season’s Greetings to the drivers who have made cycling (pleasant and safe) in 2020.

We are especially keen to thank the mum who pulled up in Clopton Gardens to collect her children from the Community Primary because she glanced over her right shoulder before she opened her door. (The “Dutch Reach” ensures that you don’t wallop a passing cyclist.) We noted the behaviour of the driver heading down the High Street who waited patiently for the dad who was teaching his young lad to safely ride across the miniroundabout and the motorist who watched the older couple struggle up Gallows Hill without revving his engine but instead hung back and waved as he passed.

And finally, the much-maligned white van man who didn’t try to squeeze past the 10-year-old who had just completed her Bikeability course and was heading down Benton Street. You are all terrific!

The “thank you” is from experienced Club cyclists who understand that you must never hug the kerb and the inexperienced riders who are still learning about good road positioning and lack a little confidence.

Amongst the new cyclists that have appeared on our roads since March is a mum who would like to ride with her children as she did when she was a girl, a middle aged chap who feels like he’s been wedded to his PC since lockdown and wants to lose a bit of weight, an ethical woman who thinks it can’t be good for anyone, let alone the planet, to drive from Taylor Road to Magdalen Road car park to get a pint of milk from the Co-op and a young couple, recently moved to the town, who never realised that there are dozens of miles of light-trafficked roads just beyond the Railway Walk.

The Club is unable to run its normal social rides on Sunday mornings but will restart them when restrictions are lifted.

Rotary Review Christmas Collections: Sadly and with great reluctance the Club has decided that for the health and safety of everyone concerned Covid restrictions will not allow the usual collections to take place.

The float and Father Christmas will therefore remain in lockdown. This is only the second time in 40 years that street collections etc have not taken place at all and the first time in the early 1980s was due to heavy snow and ice.

Morrisons are allowing collection buckets at the end of the tills from 18th December for 2 or 3 days but we are sorry that no one from Rotary will be there to greet you and give sweets to the children. However we hope that you will give as generously as you can so that Rotary may help local charities virtually all of which are suffering from much reduced income.

If any other retailers in the town read this and would be prepared to host a bucket for a few days please contact David Stokes 827226.

Remembrance Sunday: President Ian Burne attended the short service at the war memorial and laid a wreath on behalf of the Club.

Meetings: During October and the first few days of November the club held two lunch meetings and two coffee mornings with 6 members attending each time and observing social distancing ,of course. A rota system was in place to ensure that everyone who wished to attend shared the places equally. However meetings are social occasions only and provide an opportunity for members to catch up with each others news. Now that lockdown is upon us again Zoom meetings are the order of the day and only 6 members have so far ventured into this new medium.

Like everyone else members are hoping that face to face meetings will resume before Christmas.

Ansell Centre Charity for the people of Hadleigh and district Sadly, all our activities in the Ansell Centre had to stop again in November and, at the time of writing, it does not seem very likely that we will be able to hold any events in December. Do check the website for updates. During November we held our virtual AGM via Zoom and our chairman presented his report for the year which is summarised below.

Chairman’s report for 2020 The year has been in two very different parts: pre Covid and post Covid.

During the last part of 2019, our lunch clubs ran their monthly lunches which were enjoyed by our clients; quite how much we were to learn later. The Memories Cafe has filled a much needed space for those with dementia and their carers, and has widened its appeal to those who feel isolated and appreciate a social get together. We are grateful for donations to help run the Cafe from The Hadleigh Dementia Alliance, the Lottery Fund and local charities who have given us generous grants. The cinema ran some well attended films enjoyed by locals. Our films Yesterday and Bohemian Rhapsody were full houses appealing to those of us who remember the heyday of these groups from our younger days.

Then came the shutdown. We were holding a Trustees meeting to decide how to handle the fall out from the new threat of the pandemic, when we received the news that all events were to be shut down. A serious blow to our activities.

After a little while the Trustees running the lunch clubs decided to keep in touch with our members by phone. This was appreciated and it soon became clear how much all the members forced to isolate were missing their social get togethers.

Following on from this, when the rules allowed, some of the members were invited to a coffee get together in appropriate small groups.

Throughout the lockdown, Sue, the Memories Cafe co-ordinator, has produced a weekly newsletter for all Cafe members. These newsletters have been hand delivered together with cakes baked by Val, the Memories Cafe cook. From July, the Cafe welcomed four or five members each week for a cuppa and a chat in the garden. Then, in October, within the current rules, the Cafe opened up again inside the Ansell Centre.

Also, the Cinema piloted running with reduced numbers but with two sessions instead of one. This proved to be very popular with most sessions fully booked with 25 guests at each.

During this difficult time we got a little bit of cheer as Morrisons kindly donated a small gift of sweets to our volunteers, without whom we would not be able to run any of our activities.

What of the future? We intend to carry on with our activities and hope that in the not too distant future we will get back to a more normal situation where can support the Hadleigh community as we have been doing for the last eleven years.

I do hope that you, our members and volunteers, will bear with us and continue to offer your support for which we are extremely grateful. Let’s Enjoy Christmas There’s no doubt that 2020 has been an incredibly tough year. I will certainly be glad to see the back of it. Covid-19 has rampaged all over the world and we still have a way to go until the promised vaccines are rolled out. Let’s hope the scientists have got it right.

Many people have gained significant weight during the long months of lockdown, working from home & restrictions imposed to try to lessen the impact of Covid.

In an ideal world we’d instinctively eat only when we’re hungry and exactly the right number of calories to provide great nutrition and maintain an ideal weight. If only it was that easy!

But food should be enjoyed and what really happens is that we respond to all kinds of triggers. We eat for so many reasons, not least boredom, habit or for comfort. Hunger doesn’t come into it! So often we eat with our eyes‌ “ooh that looks nice‌!â€? But does it taste as good as it looks..? Probably not! Christmas is almost here, and chances are any thoughts of improving your eating habits, health etc are on hold till 2021. So, allow yourself to enjoy your Christmas food – but remember you don’t have to try everything at once. Save some for the next day.

It can help reset your approach to food, and crucially, you’ll have your own private support* group (me) who has the knowledge & experience (almost 12 years’ experience as a Consultant). A fun and creative way for kids to build friendship Last month a new activity book for kids was launched by a Hadleigh-based designer. It stands out from other booklets and journals on the market because the child not only gets to answer questions, colour borders, design clothes and share memories for themselves – but they also get to pass it around their friends to see how they will fill it in. It’s a fun and creative way to build friendship and serves as a great memento for the future.

The content was inspired by the childhood of the author’s wife. In Armenia where she grew up, friends would pass around a notebook with the same set of questions written on every page. Different friends… different answers! It’s a simple yet engaging idea.

Hadleigh Healing Society Although we have not been able to open our door and welcome those seeking help with what troubles them because of the pandemic, our healers have been sending out healing thoughts to everyone. We are having to draw on all our resources, emotionally, physically to cope with our everyday life. There is hope in the shape of a vaccine. We must cling on to that and believe we shall come through this with perseverance. Christmas is approaching. It will not be like previous years with big family gatherings. At the Hadleigh Healing Society we wish a loving, safe Christmas and New Year as it is possible to have to all. Households across Hadleigh will soon be asked to take part in Census 2021 The census is a once-in-a-decade survey that gives us the most accurate estimate of all the people and households in England and Wales. It has been carried out every decade since 1801, with the exception of 1941. It will be the first run predominantly online, with households receiving a letter with a unique access code, allowing them to complete the questionnaire on their computers, phones or tablets. “A successful census will ensure everyone from local government to charities can put services and funding in the places where they are most needed,” Iain Bell, deputy national statistician at the Office for National Statistics, said. “This could mean things like doctors’ surgeries, schools and new transport routes. That’s why it is so important everyone takes part and we have made it easier for people to do so online on any device, with help and paper questionnaires for those that need them.”

Census day will be on March 21, but households across the country will receive letters with online codes allowing them to take part from early March. The census will include questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity. And, for the first time, there will be a question asking people whether they have served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity. Results will be available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.

Hadleigh and Boxford Patient Participation Group Combining Service with Safety By the time this goes to print we can only hope that the second lockdown rules will have had an effect and it will be possible for all of us to have more freedom of movement. Until then everyone has had to re-think their daily routines to help prevent the spread of the Covid virus. The frontline services have had to be even more vigilant and at a local level this includes the Hadleigh and Boxford Health Centre. As ever it is a juggling act to maintain safety without jeopardising patients’ health needs. For this reason the Practice has had to adapt to current circumstances so that they can continue safely but still ensure patients’ access to vital services.

The use of telephone and video consultations with clinicians has greatly helped to reduce the number of personal visits. Although, rest assured, a face to face consultation is always possible if felt necessary after the initial triage. At Boxford this is available four mornings a week.

Apart from personal telephone and video consultations, a wide variety of other medical services are still available as follows.

• Blood tests • Cervical smears • Coils • Dressings • ECGs • Long term condition reviews as above • Medication reviews either via telephone or face to face • Suture removal • Vaccinations – for non-travel reasons.

Hopefully patients will appreciate the need and reasons for the current changes so that their access to healthcare, during these unprecedented times, will not be compromised and everyone’s safety including the NHS, is also assured.

2020 Innovation Award winners announced The winners of the Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Council Innovations Awards have been announced at a virtual ceremony. The awards recognised and celebrated organisations who are thinking outside the box and finding new ways to reach customers, becoming more sustainable or growing their business. Almost 30 businesses were shortlisted in 11 categories in a range of sectors including food, retail, technology, and customer service. The Shooting Star award, for most innovative company was presented to Stowmarket based Halo Service Solutions, while Challs International Ltd in Hadleigh were awarded Most Innovative SME. One of the stars of the evening was Modece Architects Ltd in Stowmarket who received three awards on the night: Most Innovative Microbusiness, Innovation in Sustainability and Innovation in Construction.

The Tomorrow’s World award for technology was presented to Acorn Bots Ltd from Fressingfield and the Innovation in Healthcare award winner was the Personal Training Centre in Sudbury.

The Innovation in Customer Service award and High Street Innovation awards were presented to West View IT Ltd (Stowmarket) and Ferguson’s Deli (Hadleigh) respectively, while Yum Yum Tree Fudge based in Woolpit was presented with the Future Food award.

The Rising Star award, which recognised the regions young innovator aged between 16-25 was presented jointly to Chloe Davis and Sophie Tapscott for their work and commitment to supporting other young people at The Mix in Stowmarket.

The event was originally planned as a black-tie event but with COVID-19 restrictions, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils decided to take an innovative approach and hold the awards virtually instead.

The awards ceremony was hosted by Paul Graham with the keynote speech delivered by Thea Goodluck, Tech Nation’s East of England Entrepreneur Engagement Manager.

Success After Stroke is an active and supportive self-help group for stroke survivors, based in Sudbury. Our team of professional therapists and dedicated volunteers are there to encour-age the rehabilitation, confidence and independence of our members.

During Covid-19 restrictions we are currently unable to enjoy our twice weekly face-to-face meetings at the Stevenson Centre in Great Cornard.

Mayor’s Update It is very hard at the moment to know what will be the situation with respect to the pandemic by the time you read this – I am writing it on 20 November, with almost two weeks of the restrictions to run. I thought I would therefore look at a couple of things which should encourage some optimism as we consider what the New Year may bring.

First though let me say how much we all owe to the shops and businesses on the High Street and in the centre of Hadleigh, and to the many businesses on the industrial estates, big and small, which have soldiered on through the toughest of times, sustaining our town’s economy and supporting us all both as consumers and employees. There is clear evidence that there is genuine optimism about Hadleigh’s future once the pandemic is past. We have a significant number of new shops starting up in the High Street, and a number of other businesses expanding into premises vacated earlier in the year. It may be that the nature of these new businesses in particular is an indication of where Hadleigh’s future lies.

They do not so much duplicate existing stores as supplement them, either by aiming at a slightly different market or by offering goods that have previously not been available. It is this range of options for the shopper that can make Hadleigh even more of a destination than it already is. We need to ensure that the everyday needs of residents are properly catered for, while also drawing in people from further afield with shops that are more specialist, and different from what can be found in other towns. Of course, we have some of that mix already, but there is perhaps a kind of “critical mass” that really gets Hadleigh known, and I think we are getting much closer to achieving that.

Connected to that is another development that the Town Council formally declared its support for last night (19 November). The District Council is looking to install up to date CCTV cameras at key points around the town – and in Sudbury – to improve security and discourage antisocial behaviour in Babergh’s two ancient market towns. We would pay the running costs of the system here, but all the capital outlay would come from the District Council. The detail of the system would be developed in the next month or so, and if it is approved, the number and siting of the cameras will be looked at by a dedicated project group. All the footage would be monitored by full time staff. The proposal also includes some mobile capability to be managed by the police. I know many people have been wanting this for quite some time, and I think it is entirely good news.

Hadleigh Elderly Peoples Welfare Committee Christmas Voucher Scheme The Committee would like to reassure everyone concerned that the Voucher Scheme will be going ahead as usual this year. However due to all the coronavirus restrictions throughout the year it has been difficult to predict the outcome of the Christmas Appeal to local businesses and organisations. The Committee has deemed it prudent therefore to reduce the value a little from £11 last year to £9.00.

We trust that recipients will understand the reasons for this and we hope that it will be for one year only. The vouchers will be either blue or orange but otherwise exactly the same and they should be honoured by most of the retailers where the majority of vouchers are exchanged. It is expected to distribute the vouchers at the beginning of December but please be patient if they are a little late in arriving - they will reach everyone who is entitled to them before Christmas.

Hello all, not long until Christmas now, hopefully we can all have a Healthy and a Happy Christmas. I have two more of our helpers stories, both would like our locals to hear what they think of the time they spend at French’s Care Haven.

Emma Novak: is one of the volunteers currently helping at our Charity. Here’s what she has to say: “I love being outdoors in the beautiful countryside and helping care for the horses, donkeys and ponies. They each have their own characters and every week I see a bit more of who they are. It can be hard work but it’s so worth it. I always leave feeling very happy.

The animals are Jann’s absolute priority and you can see that in the top care she provides and the wonderful home she has built for them. And as for Jann, well I have never met anyone like her. She is AMAZING and such a pleasure to work with. French’s is absolutely a 5* care haven” Dr John Flather: has become a valued, solid committed member of our team.

John says: “I have been helping at French's Care Haven for the last year. As part of a team of volunteers I have assisted in shaping their new home.

Weekly, we have worked to build the new areas for the horses, donkeys and ponies.

The land is beautiful and now we have secure fencing and large homely field shelters. Initially, I was very apprehensive with the horses, but now I am more confident with them and enjoy their company. The animals receive excellent care from Jann and her helpers and want for nothing. The Sanctuary is first class but expensive to run.

The pandemic has made it virtually impossible to raise funds. It needs and deserves our support” It is lovely to hear such nice comments from a variety of people. To me it does not matter if someone comes along who struggles with anxiety, or whether they are retired and look to keep themselves busy and physically active. Anyone is welcome to come on board with us and help in any way they can. I encourage those who do come, to enjoy their visits and I aim for that individual to feel welcome enough that they want to become a member of our team. All be it, days could be in the rain and mud especially at this time of year and of course when it comes to large animals the physically demanding side is there, which we cannot avoid, but saying that, there is so much in achievement and pleasure to get out of the time spent working around these beautiful animals, in a beautiful environment.

Renewal News from St Mary's Church Security In our last Renewal News we illustrated proposed security bars to the sacristy windows. Wow! Thanks to the great response from the people of Hadleigh we now have funding for this set of four window grilles. With Diocesan Advisory Committee approval in place, Felbrigg Forge will be fabricating them for us over the next month or so and we hope to have them in-situ by Christmas.

To explain a bit more about each grille; downstairs in the vestry they have been designed to represent elements from elsewhere in the church and especially reflect the parclose screens at the ends of the chapels. Upstairs the stonework on the north window has graffiti scratched into it, especially initials of choir members from when it was used as a robing room, so these will be preserved.

The design within the north grille reflects this period when the choir used the room and also it has a clock face from which the town has taken its time and a bell that all residents have been aware of down the centuries as the hours passed. The bellringers down the years have rung the eight bells that mark occasions and call the faithful to church.

The final window, facing the town centre, reflects the industry and agricultural work and the various skills of the town's labourers, traders and artisans throughout the centuries as they went about their work and plied their trades. We look forward to when we shall be able to open the sacristy for you all to view them and other archived memories of past times in St Mary's.

2020 Early in the year Andy Scott prepared a comprehensive Maintenance Plan for the upkeep of the fabric of St Mary's Church and throughout the year churchwarden James Wilding has been following the plan and they have both undertaken many of the smaller tasks that need to be addressed at regular intervals, like rodding out the drains.

Some of these tasks in the future will have to be undertaken by contractors but others are well within the remit of practical volunteers and I'm sure the churchwardens would welcome any help in this regard.

The Bellringers stepped forward for one of these tasks; getting together to clean the tower at its various chamber levels right up to the base of the spire. The task was made more onerous as it was evident that it was one that had not been tackled for many years so we thank them whole heartedly for their industrious work. They deserve to have their Gotch filled to its brim with 32 pints of beer!

Looking forward The move of the office to the deanery tower is underway.

Some work will commence to make good wear and tear of the fabric of the sacristy with its beautiful vaulted ceiling so that it can be decorated and brought back into use as a vestry again. The upper chamber has already been redecorated.

Plans, and specifications for tenders have been prepared for more extensive repairs next year throughout the building. With an estimated cost of around £150,000 we ask that you consider contributing by either contacting the church office or the Friends of St Mary's which was set up for the benefit and upkeep of the building to cover the substantial cost of restorations and repairs.

Leadwork repairs went out to tender in October with work taking place as soon as possible. Masonry repairs will go out to tender in November with work taking place after frosts have become less of a risk in 2021. In addition a survey of window glass and consequent repairs will take place once tenders are received.

As you can see our architects are moving ahead with tackling the immediate repairs to the fabric and are also guiding the committee as they make the important decisions regarding the possibility of an extension which would help us provide modern facilities worthy of the 21st century. This would also, with other reordering within the church building, free up spaces and refresh others to recreate a beautiful environment for worship which began here in Hadleigh at the end of the 13th century.

We hope to be able to announce more on this during 2021 and to bring before you all some drawings and illustrations of what is envisaged for the future.

Hello, I guess this trail of biscuit crumbs, boiled sweets and tissues is from Mum’s pocket, thanks to my housemate, Pushy Penny. If Mum leaves her coat unattended, that naughty Yorkie wastes no time in raiding the contents. Nothing is safe, sometimes she chews a hole right through, hence the scattered contents.

We hope the Lockdown has ended when you read this so that our plans are safe and not scattered. We should be selling ‘classy gifts’ and running a Tombola at the Festive Fair on Saturday 12th December at Bridge Farm Barn, Monks Eleigh, IP7 7AY. Christmas face masks will also be on offer, quite the must-have fashion accessory for humans! Sadly the Sudbury Christmas Tree Festival in St. Peter’s Church has been cancelled but we hope to attend the Langham Christmas Fair rescheduled for Sunday 6th December.

We are still rehoming animals by appointment only but politely ask that nothing is left at the Sanctuary without prior arrangement. Everything must be quarantined to protect volunteers and bedding, food or sale goods left at random make this impossible. Sudbury & District Citizens Advice Q: Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m a bit concerned about buying goods online. What happens if something goes wrong, or if I change my mind after seeing something in reality? I donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have money to lose right now.

A: Youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not alone being cautious about shopping online. Over the last year Citizens Advice Consumer Service has dealt with just under 123,000 cases in relation to online shopping. Most of the time, when you buy something online you automatically get a 14-day â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;cooling-off periodâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; which starts the day after you receive your order. There doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t need to be anything wrong with the item for you to get a refund. Many online sellers may offer more time, so make sure you check the terms and conditions before purchasing. There are some exceptions, like buying something bespoke or perishable, like flowers or chocolates. There are also exceptions if the product is sealed, like face masks or CDs. If you do decide to return your item, you need to tell the seller you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want the item within 14 days of receiving it. Once youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve told the seller, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve got 14 days to send it back. The seller has to pay you the refund within 14 days from when they receive the item. You may have to pay the cost of posting something back to the seller, but you don't have to return the item in its original packaging as long as youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve wrapped it safely. If you donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t wrap it safely and the item gets damaged, the seller can reduce your refund. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk Last December was, like this one will inevitably be, an unusual Christmas.

However, where the Yuletide of 2019 was disrupted by a general election, this year’s will be more fundamentally affected by Coronavirus. At that election I had the great honour to be re-elected for the third time in four and a half years as the Member of Parliament for South Suffolk. Despite the quite extraordinary impact of the pandemic, I’m proud that progress has still been made – where possible – on the promises I set out in my election address posted to every household in the constituency, 12 months ago.

On the crucial issue of healthcare, I promised to support a rebuild of West Suffolk Hospital; and this was duly announced in October. I also promised to deliver more police officers. I’m pleased to confirm that we have since secured 54 new officers for Suffolk to be in post by March 2021, 6 covering Sudbury and Haverhill, with more to come.

On the all important matter of infrastructure, at every election I’ve stood in since 2015 a hot topic has been the need to invest in and improve both the A12 and A14. In particular, local motorists will know the importance of the Copdock interchange in this regard. My election address promised to lobby for improvements to Copdock to be included as a scheme in the next Road Investment Strategy (RIS) statement; in March it was duly confirmed that Copdock would indeed be part of the RIS pipeline of schemes to be developed in the years ahead.

But as important as these achievements are, I’m all too aware of how the past year has been dominated by the impact of Coronavirus. Yet even here recent positive news on vaccines and mass testing offers much promise – and the possibility of better times ahead. Whatever shape our Christmas celebrations take, I wish each of my constituents an enjoyable and healthy festive period, notwithstanding Covid restrictions. I will be hoping for a return to normality in a less tumultuous 2021, and look forward to continuing my work as your MP. Merry Christmas one and all!

The sale of bird food and feeders went through the roof during the lockdown as people, stuck at home, rediscovered their gardens and got to know their wildlife visitors. We’ve all enjoyed our little feathered friends, but there are other visitors that do not feed in the garden but need our help in other ways.

One of the most amazing birds to visit our town is only with us from late April to August. It is one of the fastest and most graceful of birds that spends most of its life in flight. It feeds, drinks, mates and even sleeps on the wing, only coming to earth to breed and this is where we can help. If you have not yet worked it out, I’m talking about the Swift. As a supreme aerialist the Swift has few natural predators, but despite this they are in serious decline. Their numbers have fallen by 58% over the last 25 years and this is largely because their opportunity to find suitable nesting sites has dramatically been reduced. Swifts prefer to nest in the eaves and loft spaces of buildings and while older properties tended to have lots of nooks and crannies, modern building techniques and materials deny Swifts access.

With this in mind, HEAT have started a project that will see 80 Swift nesting boxes installed across the town, with the first 6 boxes having just been installed on the Library. A huge thanks to Hadleigh Town Council who funded the project and to the Suffolk Bird Group and the Suffolk Wildlife Trust who provided expert advice. The boxes will be installed in groups of 4-6 as the Swifts like to nest in colonies and will all be in place by March next year ready for their return.

They are currently enjoying the warmer skies over Central Africa, but will return to breed. A Swift chick will leave the nest at just 4-6 weeks old and will then fly constantly for 2-3 years until it is time for it to nest itself. Once the boxes are all installed, we will post a nest box map and ask you all to keep an eye out for the arrival of the Swifts. We hope that this project will increase the numbers in the skies above Hadleigh and will go some way to helping these magnificent birds thrive.

Hopefully, by the time you are reading this article we will have come out of the second ‘lockdown’ and reopened The Cock Inn on the 2nd December. It may not be so as Hadleigh has had more than its share of Covid-19 cases. Let’s hope that everyone recovers and that we can all get back to some form of normal by springtime. The pub industry was, in general, struggling way before the Covid-19 pandemic, a result of extremely high alcohol duty (the highest in Europe), ever increasing business rates and rising staff costs to name but a few. However with two lockdowns, months of total closure and restricted trade even when allowed to open, a few more nails have been hammered into the ‘great British pubs’ coffin.

The good news has been on the vaccine front with Pfizer, Moderna and the UK’s own AstraZenica, all announcing robust and positive results from their stage three trials, with the latter company also confident about a second treatment that will help to deliver antibodies to those thousands of people who have deficient immunity systems or who’s bodies cannot accept vaccines. Fingers crossed here and let’s hope that by the time many of us are reading this edition of the Community News, successful vaccine distribution will have commenced.

We will of course open on the 2nd of December, if permitted, and will be ready and eager to serve you all once again. We are hoping that we can all enjoy an enjoyable but safe festive period and New Year. Chernobyl Children’s Lifeline & Charity Shop As I am writing this piece we have just entered “Lockdown 2”, a most unfortunate time for everyone and I am sure we all hope it will be as short as possible and have the desired effect. We would usually be in preparations for the Christmas version of our well known fundraising event “Chocolate Bingo”, alas it was not to be but we are still trying to be positive that the event will return at some point in the future.

Activity toolkits and guidance available to help you stay active in Suffolk during the pandemic Although the onset of colder weather and the restrictions to combat coronavirus (Covid-19) are making it a challenge right now, Active Suffolk is continuing to encourage people to be as active as possible through the autumn and winter months. Our message is simple – being active is good for your physical health and mental health and being as fit as possible right now is a great way to deal with illness and viruses. We know people are feeling concerned and anxious, but we also know being active can be a genuine antidote. It’s also a way of staying connected with people – current rules allow you to meet one other person, not from your household, outside the home and there’s a wealth of online classes and support tools that can help you feel part of a wider community. That’s why we want to continue providing support, advice and encouragement to help people feel able and motivated to be as active as possible. We also want to make sure our community understands what is and isn't allowed.

People can continue to exercise outdoors daily, both alone and with members of their household. They can also exercise with one person from another household, so long as they’re social distancing. There’s no limit on the amount of time spent exercising outdoors, or the number of times someone can do it.

The balance of keeping people safe but allowing them to enjoy the benefits that being active brings, we believe is vital and we’re proud of the work being carried out by our partner organisations across Suffolk, highlighted by the Keep Moving Suffolk campaign.

Over the course of the lockdown period, Sport England has conducted nationwide research to gain an insight into activity levels and attitudes towards being active up and down England, and close to 70% of people say they’ve used being active to help manage their mental health. However, we’re all concerned about recent drop-offs in activity levels and will be doing everything we can to support our communities to get more active.

Hadleigh Town Council Full Council Meeting Thursday 15th October 2020 via videoconferencing MINUTES 1: Opening Address a) The Mayor opened the meeting and advised people that the meeting would be recorded. He requested that Councillors will be limited to one comment per item; Councillors should mute their personal mobile telephones, and that questions should ideally not be asked during debates. Councillors attending: Bayliss, Beggerow, Gordon, Hinton, Knock, Minns (Chair), McLeod, Schleip, Talbot. Also in attendance: The Acting Town Council Manager, County Councillor Fraser and 33 members of the public. b) Apologies for absence were received from Councillor Gregg, District Councillor Dawson and Grandon, the latter due to internet issues. c) Councillor Gordon declared a pecuniary interest in item 5). on the agenda d) There were no considerations of requests for dispensations.

2: Minutes Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, Seconded by Councillor Hinton, the minutes of the Full Council meeting on Thursday 17th September 2020 were accepted as a true record.

Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Gordon, the minutes of the Town Matters Committee Meeting held on Thursday 27th August 2020 were accepted as a true record by those on the Committee.

3: Reports Suffolk County Councillor Mick Fraser presented his report. When questioned about businesses on Hadleigh High Street suffering from high rates, advised that Babergh District Council have sent funding to assist with business rates to businesses.District Councillor Kathryn Grandon was not available to present her report in person, but had supplied a written copy.

4: Public Forum A member of the public asked for an update on Corks Lane and the swimming pool, but Councillor Fraser was unable to provide a response at this time.

A member of the public asked the Mayor was Councillors were not being co-opted into the 5 vacant Town Councillor seats. It was advised that as more than 10 people had requested an election for each of the 5 vacancies, Councillors could not be co-opted. Central Government has banned all elections until May 2021, when new Town Councillors will be elected.

5: Finance a) Clarification was requested on the lateness of the presentation for payment of two 2019 Iverde bills which could not be answered due to the change in Town Council staff. Clarification was also sought on the nature of the invoices.

Proposed by Councillor Minns and Seconded by Councillor Beggerow it was resolved to approve the payment schedules with the exception of the two 2019 Iverde invoices.

6: Grants a) Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Schleip it was unanimously agreed to support the HEAT grant application request for £800 to provide swift bird boxes in Hadleigh. b) After the provision of further information it was proposed by Councillor Gordon, seconded by Councillor Knock it was agreed to support Sudbury and District Citizens Advice grant application request for £600 towards core costs of providing advice.

7: Cemetery Road Update An objection was made to the resolution regarding the temporary cemetery road, in that Project Managers had signed off the cemetery extension works as complete and not the Town Council, and as such it was felt that the Town Council were due a rebate. A letter from the farmer indicated that he is content with the road and that further action from the Town Council would result in solicitors fees being incurred.

Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor Beggerow the Town Council resolved that while the matter of the temporary road in part constructed from Coram Street to the rear of the cemetery extension has not been resolved to the full satisfaction of the Council, the point has now been reached where the financial risks of a failed action and the administrative load this continuing matter places on the Council and its staff outweigh any benefit that might be derived from initiating any legal action, such that the matter is now to be considered closed For: Councillors Bayliss, Beggerow, Gordon, Hinton, Minns, McLeod, Schleip, Talbot; Against Councillor Knock.

8: Committee Updates There were no updates from either the Council Matters Committee meeting on 24th September 2020 or the two September 2020 Planning Committee meetings.

9: Hadleigh Rugby Club Councillor Beggerow advised the meeting that Hadleigh Rugby Club has requested permission from Hadleigh Town Council to locate 2 metal storage containers at Layham Road Sports Ground. The containers would be separately located, one close to the pitch and the other located away from the sports pavilion. Any legal agreement would need to include a clause that the Town Council could request the removal of the storage containers at any time.

Proposed by Councillor Beggerow, seconded by Councillor Schleip it was resolved to approve, subject to a new licence agreement, the use of land owned by Hadleigh Town Council for Hadleigh Rugby Club to site two temporary and moveable storage units at Layham Road sports ground.

10: Angel Street Car Parking Proposed by Councillor Minns, Seconded by Councillor Bayliss it was agreed to support in principal the proposal for additional parking restrictions outside Nos. 44, 46a and 46b Angel Street.

11.TSB Hadleigh Branch Closure The Town Council noted the announcement

that the Hadleigh High Street Branch of TSB was due to close in May 2021, although specific reasons for its closure had not been provided. It was felt that bank was important for Hadleigh High Street and for the non-internet banking population of Hadleigh, providing the only night safe in the town, and the only place where local businesses could obtain coinage.

Proposed by Councillor Minns, seconded by Councillor McLeod it was agreed that the Mayor should write to Babergh DC, Suffolk CC and James Cartlidge MP to seek their support in a joint objection to the proposed closure of the TSB Hadleigh branch in May 2021.

14: Confidential Agenda Items The chair moved Item 2) and part of item 3) of item Confidential Agenda Item 14: To Consider Staffing Matters onto the main agenda, advising the meeting that item 3) of the agenda would be split with the section discussing finances being discussed in private.

14. Confidential Agenda Item 2: Town Council Offices Christmas 2020 ClosureCouncillor Schleip advised that it was a quiet time of the year generally and that staff were given 2 days of annual leave in their employment contracts to be taken during this period. The Town Council would be providing an additional 1 ½ days leave to enable the offices to close fully.

The meeting was notified that the Town Hall complex caretaker had agreed to be on standby for any emergencies which might occur over the festive period in the event of the office being closed, with back-up support from the Acting Town Council Manager.

It was advised that other businesses carry on as usual during this time, and a quiet period may help staff catch up on any backlog of office tasks. However, it was felt that as staff had been working hard to maintain the office during a period of changing staff and staffing levels, staff efforts should be recognised.

Proposed by Councillor Schleip, seconded by Councillor Hinton it was agreed that the Town Council offices should close at lunchtime on Thursday 24th December 2020 and reopen at 9am on Monday 4th January 2021 with a designated member of staff on call should any emergencies occur. For Councillors Bayliss, Beggerow, Gordon, Hinton, Minns, McLeod, Schleip, Talbot; Against Councillor Knock.

14. Confidential Agenda Item 3: Recruitment of Staff. Councillor Knock sought clarification on the roles of the Town Clerk and the Town Councillor Manager, suggesting the Town Council employ a Town Clerk and then reassess whether a manager is required. Supported by Councillor McLeod it was felt the Council should ensure the procedural foundations were in place, and possibly increase the Town Clerk salary to attract a higher calibre Clerk.

Councillors Schleip and Beggerow agreed that time had been spent looking at Town and Parish Council structures. If the Town Council under-estimated the demands of the role and the democratic processes were not put in place, then the Town Council could trip itself up. A Town Clerk looks within the Council at the procedures and policies, whereas a Town Council Manager looks outside the Council working more closely with the Community and making Hadleigh a better place to live and work.

It was noted that the previous Town Council Manager had advised that the role was greater than one person could manage.

Issue 61 (December 2020 â&#x20AC;&#x201C; January 2021) The front cover features Hadleigh Old School, formerly Bridge Street School for Boys, which is being established as a new music, arts and entertainment venue.

The history of the buildings â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the former school and headmasterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s house â&#x20AC;&#x201C; is now available in two new A5 booklets.

Nigel Crisp concentrates on the period 1853 to 1967 in his Bridge Street Boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; School: a focus on the buildings that once housed Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s National School for Boys (2020). As a former pupil, Nigel is very familiar with the site under the headmastership of W.A.B. Jones. Earlier history of the location appears in Sue Andrewsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; A brief history of The Old School, Bridge Street, Hadleigh (2020), which concentrates on three important people in the education of Hadleigh boys: John Alabaster, Ann Beaumont and Very Revd Henry Barry Knox. A wealthy clothier in the townâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s woollen-cloth industry, John established the charity school in 1637; Ann provided extra funding in 1763 that increased the number of pupils and encouraged apprenticeships; and in 1853, Henry arranged for the present building to be erected. Tucked away between Church Walk and the river Brett, Hadleigh Hall is said to have a medieval core behind its mid-19th century â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;imposing elevation in Domestic Gothic Style of red brick with stone dressingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. Having related ownership of this manor is Issues 53 to 58, the story is now told in â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Whoâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been living in Hadleigh Hall?â&#x20AC;&#x2122; of owner-occupiers since 1883, when the manorial residence was sold away from its manor. The building and grounds were a private family home until 1949, when they became Hadleigh Hall School, which followed the philosophy of Fredrich Froebel (1782-1852) on child development.

Nigel Crisp brings Angel Street Mission Room to our attention in the occasional series â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Lost buildingsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; and â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Stories from the War Memorialâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; continues with James Robert Beckett (1875-1918), a â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;troubled man who had his flawsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; as author Jeff Ward describes him but adds that James â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;answered his countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s call to arms when the time cameâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Made in Hadleighâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; looks at malt production: conversion of barley into the main flavouring ingredient of ale and beer. Part I explains the five stages in processing malt and begins a gazetteer of the many sites in Hadleigh where the industry was carried out starting with four places at the northern end of town. Have a look at the East Anglian Film Archive website for the film by local film-maker Robert Boulton, which shows this process at Hadleigh in 1947.

Not everyone who has visited Hadleigh over the years has seen â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;a charming little countrified town â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;as James John Hussey did in 1889. â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Travellersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Talesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; brings together various comments on how the town has appeared to outsiders from 1779 until 1989. When Julian Tennyson, grandson of the Victorian poet laureate Alfred Lord Tennyson, came in 1939 and American airman John T. Appleby a few years later, neither were much impressed by what they found. Even crime-writer Ruth Rendall, who lived locally at Polstead and later became Baroness Rendall of Babergh, described the shops as leaving â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;much to be desiredâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; when she made one of her hurried visits in 1989. What would they have though when all those barriers had to be encountered along High Street during Lockdown?

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Although I am writing this only in the first week of November already many of the shrubs and small trees in the garden have lost their leaves and have a wintry look about them, and the perennials are feeling sorry for themselves after all the wet weather we have had recently. The tomatoes have all been picked, the remaining courgettes have been munched by something and tender fresh veg from the garden is a thing of the past...or so you may think.

Several years ago I invested in a small unheated greenhouse and had great success with tomatoes, peppers and aubergines over the summer, it was also useful for bringing on seedlings early in the season. But for the first few years it remained empty over the winter apart from using it to protect a few potted plants.

Then I read an article in a garden magazine about growing some veg through the winter in either an unheated greenhouse or polytunnel, it is possible to grow coldhardy veg in pots, trays and troughs as long as they are protected from wind and rain. Humidity can be damaging so keep the air flow constant by always leaving a vent or window slightly open, on really cold nights use fleece for a little protection but remember to remove the fleece to reduce the likelihood of mildew. Light levels are low in winter so keep the glass clean to let in as much light in as possible, also plants transpire less in winter and tend to grow more slowly so reduce watering accordingly. September and October are the best times to sow but I have continued to sow seed right through to the new year and in the past have had success with salad leaves, spinach, spring onions, radish and rocket and this year I am also trying carrots, the little golf ball sized ones. If you have more space then chard and leaf beet and pak choi could also be on the menu.

Gardens have been so important to so many people for most of this year and for some it is the first time they have grown fruit and veg or gardened at all, let's hope that next year will bring a change for the better with more people than ever continuing to enjoy gardening. hadleighgardenclub@gmail.com

Ingredients needed: 1 flowerpot, 1 plastic bag full of sand to fit, 1 candle, greenery e.g. holly, ivy with berries, yew – these are all long lasting.

Recipe: Clean the flower pot and place the bag of sand inside; push the candle into the sand and place greenery all around it. The sand can be dampened to keep your greenery moist. It should look something like the picture below. Good luck but don't leave the candle burning when you go off to watch the Queen's Speech!

Parish Council The main points discussed during the meeting of the Parish Council on 28 October 2020 were: • Suffolk CC report In response to a question concerning the cost of electric vehicle chargers given the number of vehicles on the road, Councillor Jones said there was already a large number in Ipswich and other towns, but the aim now was to try and increase coverage in rural areas. In response to a comment that the proposals in the Boundary Commission review could lead to the Samford area being considerably reduced, Councillor Jones said the proposals were to extend Samford, which was the largest division by numbers, and the second largest by area. It was agreed that if any individual felt strongly about the proposals, they should respond to the consultation by the deadline of 23 November.

• District Council report With reference to the new in-house public realm service, Councillor Ward said some parish councils had expressed an interest in developing their own public realm activities. With regard to Covid 19, Babergh no longer had the highest rate in the county.

• Highways & Footpaths Councillor Woods’ report was noted. He had reported online to Suffolk CC several areas of concern, including the Mill bridge safety surface which needed replacing; however, they did not consider some of the issues raised to be priorities. The Chairman asked councillors to continue to encourage parishioners to also make online reports.

• Speeding Councillor Curran had received a response from SCC to his request for posts to be installed for a SID device; however, there was a long waiting list. In the meantime, SCC had asked the PC to suggest possible locations for the posts. Councillor Jones said he had attended a further meeting with the Police & Crime Commissioner re automatic number plate recognition (ANPR). He was hopeful that the initial objections had been overcome, and a bid was being submitted to the Suffolk 2020 Fund for a twoyear trial period. Councillors Curran and Paton commented that the two initiatives were complementary; it was important to press ahead with the SID option and not lose credibility with parishioners.

• Hydrant markers The Clerk had spoken to Suffolk Fire & Rescue Service who had supplied location maps and confirmed an inspector would be checking the hydrants and reporting any issues; they would also liaise with the water company if any problems were highlighted.

• Budget & Precept working party The working party would meet to produce a draft budget and recommendations would be considered by full council at the November meeting.

• Street sign for Popes Green lane There were currently very few street signs in Lower Layham and councillors expressed concern that a precedent could be set, leading to a plethora of signage and ongoing expense. In addition, a low level street sign in such a rural area would require constant maintenance to ensure it was not obscured by vegetation. It was agreed not to proceed.

• Locality grants The Chairman said the village review held in 2019 had highlighted the importance to parishioners of enjoying the countryside, the health benefits of which had been emphasised during the current pandemic.

She suggested a project could be built around opening up the countryside and it was agreed that she and Councillor Woods would work on an application.

• Quiet Lanes initiative It was agreed that the PC should register an interest in this initiative.

• Closure of Hadleigh TSB It was agreed that the PC should write to the Mayor of Hadleigh, who was leading the campaign to overturn the decision to close the TSB – or at least delay the closure.

Layham’s Autumn Tidy Up On the morning of Saturday 31st October, we were very pleased to see 30 volunteers giving up their time to improve our village. As well as litter picking, village signs were cleaned, trees at the back of the new green on Blacksmith’s Corner were cut, grass on Brett Green edged, and some of the accessible hedges on The Street were trimmed.

Those of you who attended the Remembrance Service at St Andrews War Memorial will have noticed the impressive difference the team of volunteers made in the church yard and burial ground – mowing the grass, weeding and tidying the hedges. thanks to all the volunteers who worked so hard on the day, and to those of you who collect litter and do other tasks to improve our village throughout the year.

We also thank Mid-Suffolk and Babergh District Councils who provided litter picking signs, lent us brown bins for garden waste and removed all the rubbish after the event.

Layham’s Mobile Post Office Those of you who have lived here for some years will remember that until 2013 we had a Post Office operating from Alan and Marian Hughes’s front door in Brett Green. It was closed down and the Parish Council lobbied Royal Mail for some sort of service in Layham. The campaign was eventually successful and in 2019 a mobile Post Office van started to visit the village. It parks just inside the entrance to Brett Green from 11am to 1pm every Tuesday.

During the difficult last nine months there has been increasing use of the facility as people have avoided going in to town as much as usual. We now hear that the last remaining bank in Hadleigh is due to close in early summer.

If that happens our mobile van will become increasingly valuable – so use it as much as you can. For people living in rural areas Post Office branches or mobile units are a real lifeline, providing vital services such as cash withdrawals, bill payments and postal services. Services of public worship are sadly now not permitted until at least 3 December, and we will continue to monitor the situation and follow government and diocesan guidelines. Sadly, the advertising didn’t reach enough people, so the event didn’t have the impact that was hoped – nevertheless they are grateful for the generosity of those who took part.

About a dozen families made scarecrows and exhibited them outside their houses.

They brought smiles to the faces of those that passed by. The straw bale man was seen outside the home of the Sergeant family.

To the Villagers of Layham I need your help! The members of the Village Hall Management Committee, who oversee my needs and desires, have reached retiring age and I need some new members to keep me running efficiently for the village.

I have been here for ninety-two years and your Village Hall for fifty-two years.

Practically, I am physically fine and in good shape, but I do need assistance with the actual minutiae of day to day running. For instance, I am not well equipped to deal with such things as effective communication, which is why I asked my Chairman to deliver this message.

Layham Playgroup It’s certainly getting chilly out there isn’t it? We have been thinking about the wildlife around us and made bird feeders to go in our garden. Despite the cold weather, we have been wrapping up warm and exploring the garden still and warming up inside with a variety of warm snacks and drinks. We started introducing our festive celebrations in mid-November when we thoroughly explored Diwali. The children loved the fairy lights we hung up and enjoyed making their own Deejah’s (candles) Rangoli pictures and Mehndi hand decorations. We heard that our friend ‘Buddy the Elf’ is returning this year, despite everything that’s happened this year. What exciting activities is he going to bring? A BIG Thank you to our friends at St Andrew’s church for gifting us some advent calendars. The children were super pleased and very eager to open the doors! Also, a BIG thank you to everyone who joined in our scarecrow fundraiser. We raised £70 and are incredibly grateful for everyone’s support.

We wish all of our families and friends in the community a very safe and merry Christmas and hope that 2021 brings a bit more kindness to the world!

Green light for councils’ biodiversity vision Councillors at Babergh and Mid Suffolk have approved their first Biodiversity Action Plan to protect and strengthen biodiversity – supporting the councils’ carbon neutral aims. Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils’ cabinets have unanimously agreed their Biodiversity Action Plan today, setting out how they aim to protect and strengthen biodiversity in the districts. The plan was developed by a cross-party Biodiversity Task Force, supported by experts. It is the product of biodiversity emergency motions passed by both councils in 2019. Its approval forms a key step towards achieving the councils’ ambitions to protect and enhance the environment, and links to their Joint Carbon Reduction Management Plan.

Headline commitments include: • Developing a wildlife network map - to help identify and create important wildlife corridors, and tree and hedge planting areas - enhancing connectivity and improving management of existing as well as future Local Nature • Reserves and wildlife sites in the district • Planting wildflower meadow verges and changing strict grass cutting regimes where suitable; encouraging bees and insects • Working with town and parish councils and local communities to identify areas where trees and hedges can be planted • Increasing hedge planting through the DEFRA Hedgerows and Boundaries Grant scheme, and helping to fund planting which isn’t eligible where possible • Developing a Supplementary Planning Document linked to the Joint Local Plan - to strengthen biodiversity protections and set out the districts’ expectations for design, landscaping and open space elements of new developments • Exploring the possibility of a green burial site • Residents are also being encouraged to take action, however small, to increase biodiversity in their communities. This includes things such as installing bird and bat boxes, planting flowers to attract bees, creating hedgehog corridors, and being biodiversity-conscious when gardening.

• Additionally, the councils’ Tree for Life scheme continues to offer local parents a tree to celebrate the arrival of a child, or remember babies sadly lost. The scheme will play an important role in the wider-districts’ biodiversity, using native, locally grown and sourced trees.

The councils will continue to work closely with existing partners, including Suffolk County Council, and other non-governmental organisations, to protect natural habitats, and work towards the Suffolk-wide ambition to be carbon neutral by 2030.

Babergh’s recent decision to bring their public realm service in-house will also enable them, jointly with Mid Suffolk, to manage land more holistically to increase biodiversity.

Well Above the Parapet Cllr Mick Fraser - Suffolk County Council Babergh District Council – Hadleigh South COVID-19 Response Covid-19 infection rates still remain low in Suffolk and the East of England, but numbers are increasing, especially in Babergh district. The latest testing information shows a large rise in positive coronavirus cases in Hadleigh which on 13th November was the equivalent of 475 cases for every 100,000 people. It was extremely concerning to hear of the outbreaks within some of our care homes, High School, and elsewhere in our community. However, data also shows that the disease is being shared more generally in the Hadleigh community and between households.

I would like to reassure you that these cases were brought to the immediate attention of Suffolk’s Community Intervention Team. Public Health Suffolk (PHS) hosts regular meetings between with PHE, Ipswich and East Suffolk CCG, SCC, and the Hadleigh Boxford Group Practice to ensure the swift and efficient management of any situation. With respect to Magdalen House, this involved the correct isolation procedures and regular testing of everyone who lives and works at the home. I speak frequently with the head of PHS to ensure that all appropriate testing and measures are being considered for our town.

Funding for families and children Suffolk is supporting families and children in need. In August, DEFRA awarded Suffolk County Council £770,000 as our share of the Hardship Grant. Suffolk Public Sector Leaders provided further match funding of £800,000 in September, and so far the Suffolk system has spent £600,000 which has covered: • The Local Welfare Assistance Scheme that funds supermarket, food, and fuel vouchers; school uniforms; essential furniture items; white goods; and oil heating refills.

• The Suffolk Advice and Support Service phoneline.

• A donation of £100,000 to the Suffolk Community Foundation to provide grants to organisations to help communities with immediate hardship.

On top of this, SCC has also committed £250,000 to Suffolk Foodbanks and awarded a further £60,000 to the Suffolk Community Foundation’s emergency hardship fund. Schools receive government funding to provide free school meals, but for maintained schools, this funding comes through Suffolk County Council. In Suffolk, there are now about 19,000 children receiving Free School Meals.

Home but Not Alone - SCC continues to triage all Home, But Not Alone calls, with their Customer Service team then resolving local queries or passing more complex circumstances to our Communities team. This has led to a small number of urgent referrals, relating to the collection of food and medication, since the service resumed last month. The service was paused in August because of low call demand and the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions. However, due to this new national lockdown, the service is now up and running again. The telephone number is freephone 0800 876 6926 and will be staffed from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

Business Support The Local Restrictions Support Grant became available on 11th November and are available to businesses who have been instructed to close by the Government as part of the Covid-19 lockdown measures. Payments will be: £1,334, £2,000, or £3,000 depending on the rateable value of the business and will be administered by Babergh. It has also been announced that additional funding in the form of Additional Restrictions Grants will be given to councils to enable them to support businesses more broadly. This includes those businesses who are not required to close but will be impacted by the national lockdown.

Hadleigh Swimming Pool The construction programme is behind original timeframe and now a January completion is now likely. The formal launch date is yet to be set and will be agreed between Babergh and Abbeycroft Leisure; there have been several issues which have had a cumulative impact on the timeframe including: • Materials supply delays including some specialist overseas products from Spain and Germany including pool filter equipment and glazing, as well as some interruptions to standard materials including timber and plaster products • Subcontractors’ delays getting back on site post-Covid including some live issues at the moment with northern England based providers and specialists under local restrictions • Pool tank rendering and other construction contingency time being needed • Some weather-related delays • Covid site shutdown delay end of March until June As a new pool, the overall commissioning phase will require a variety of technical assessments including phased fill and water testing which will take approximately 4 weeks and coincide with a Christmas break.

This has been a rotten year for us all, but I remain optimistic that we can pull together and counter this pandemic soon. I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone as peaceful and joyous a Christmas as possible with your families.

Armistice Day For Armistice Day this year, School Council painted a poppy themed mural in the school grounds, near our newly created Peace Garden. After a Zoom assembly that included the story of the Unknown Warrior, the whole school were able to come together outside, in a socially distanced way & remaining in their year group bubbles, to stop for the minute's silence at 11am.

Mrs Hawkes played the Last Post. Children then took part in 11 minutes of mindfulness colouring, following the British Legion's theme of doing something around the number 11.

Key Stage 1 – Year 1 Year One have settled in brilliantly this year and we were thrilled to welcome some new pupils to our year group after half term. This half term has begun with our Homes topic, linking History and English. In History we have been learning about old and new houses, learning the subject specific vocabulary needed to describe them and comparing different types of houses. We have had to adapt to teaching in a national lockdown and decided to make a virtual walk around Hadleigh to replace the pupil's normal houses walk. The children enjoyed seeing the houses near the school and were able to compare these to their own houses and look for examples of old and new houses on their journeys to and from school. We also hosted our first virtual visitor, John Scaife from Box Valley Architectural Design arrived on the hall screen to talk to the year group. After showing the children some designs he has worked on we looked at some amazing buildings from around the world. We found out that the largest house in the country has 365 rooms and that the tallest building is in Dubai and stands at 828m high! Pupils were then challenged to work in pairs and design their own house but to be as creative as possible. Three groups from each class were asked to present their design to the class and the winners from each class showed theirs to Mr Pilkington and were given a pens/ pencils/notebook prize donated by Mr Scaife.

News from Stoke By Nayland Golf Club Order of Merit With the end of the golfing season, the coveted Order of Merit competition, combining results from 25 competitions, has concluded. The winner, with 81 points, by a considerable margin, is Matt Wyatt, whose consistency underpinned a great year for the 8 handicapper. His run of top 19 places gave him a sizeable lead over the rest of the field.

He was 4th overall in the Laird Stableford, including a 4th and 5th place in the early rounds. With a 4th place in Round 1 of the Club Championship too, Matt has seen his handicap drop from 10 to 8 since competitions resumed at the beginning of a July. In 2nd place were Cyril Williams (5) and Ralph Barton (13) both with 59 points.

Women in Golf Charter We are delighted to announce that Stoke by Nayland has become the first Club in Essex to achieve ‘Women in Golf Charter’ status. Club President Lesley Garnett, with the help of Elaine Davidson, the Ladies section, the Club Committee, our Professionals and the Director of Golf, has been working tirelessly to put in place Stoke by Nayland’s commitments to the delivery of the Charter. Lesley commented "I have every confidence that our initiatives will make golf more inclusive and accessible for women and families at Stoke by Nayland.

The R&A unveiled a new Women in Golf Charter on 29 May 2018 in London as part of the organisation’s global drive to increase the number of women and girls participating in golf and to encourage more opportunities for women to work within the golf industry. The Women in Golf Charter intends to inspire an industry-wide commitment to developing a more inclusive culture within golf around the world and enable more women and girls to flourish and maximise their potential at all levels of the sport. Adoption of the Charter requires national associations and other golf bodies to build on and develop initiatives which will focus on encouraging more women and girls to play golf and stay within the sport as members of clubs, while also empowering women to enjoy successful careers working within the golf industry.

The Hunter Guide Dog Trophy This mixed competition was held on Sunday 18th October winners were Elaine Harris & Collin Broadhurst with 41 points, with second place to Ladies Captain, Jane Golding and David Hunter, who scored 40, nudging out Corrine Jackson and Glen Jackson on countback. It was great that David was amongst the prize winners as he established the competition some years ago when he was Club Captain.

Senior’s Championship An extremely successful inaugural SbN Senior’s Championship was completed today with 18 holes over the Gainsborough course played on a particularly windy day but, fortunately, one of the few recent dry days. After Round 1 the Seniors Championship was close to a foregone conclusion with Richard Cross well ahead of his nearest challenger. The Handicap Championship was, however, a very open competition. Another very good round by Richard secured the Seniors Championship - well done Richard, a great performance over the two rounds.

Two very solid rounds by a Peter Hele saw him come from some way back in the pack to edge out Graham Vandervord on countback to take the Handicap Championship - some excellent golf played by both over the two courses.

Hole in One 1 What an inaugural SbN Senior’s Championship with members hitting Holes In One in each of the two rounds. Last week it was John Smith on Constable, this week it was the turn of Barry Hitchcock on the 194 yard par 3 9th hole. An excellent 5 wood to the green pitched just short of the hole but Barry and his playing partners, Peter Garnett & Andy Higginson, didn’t see where it went from there. A search beyond the green proved fruitless until one of the group found the ball nestled in the bottom of the hole. Barry’s second HIO was duly celebrated both on the course and in the clubhouse later. Well done Barry. Hole in One 2 Many congratulations to John Smith who achieved a Hole In One with his trusty 7 iron on the 115 yard Constable 8th hole in the first round of the inaugural Senior Members Club Championship. Described by one of his playing partners as a low penetrating shot that hit the base of the pin on the full. The ball impaled itself into the hole with such force that it was below the foam pipe.

This year has been like no other! The Hadleigh Hares were looking forward to a calender full of races before Covid -19 changed all our lives. The last proper race for many Hares was the Stowmarket Striders half Marathon in March and that seems such a long time ago now!

It’s not been all bad though. Since March the running community has seen an increase in virtual races and challenges which are being enjoyed by all our Hares, seniors and juniors alike. The fact that running can be a solo sport, it's no surprise that this hobby has seen a huge surge since the Lockdown in March, an activity which can help clear the mind and keep us fit and healthy without the need for a gym or equipment. Such that we have also welcomed some new members, which is fantastic for the growth of the club.

Here are some recent notable achievements by some of our members - well done all.

Virtual London Marathon On the very wet, windy, cold day of October 4th Kay and Katrina tackled the Virtual Marathon. The route consisting of three very wet laps (needed to mention the rain again!) taking in the sights of Chattisham, Wenham and finishing down the very popular soggy railway walk. The run was supported by the Hares family with some members assisting with water stops and feed stations along the route.

But not only that, a group of support runners joined the effort to keep morale high on route and took it in turns on each lap. Not only did the runners complete the Marathon in 4hrs 19 mins they managed to raise an epic £1,404.94!! for the Stroke Association Charity! An amazing result on both counts.

The Suffolk Endrancelife Ultra Marathon and Marathon This was an actual race!!! This was possible due to its trail nature, small numbers and staggered starts. Some of our Hares got very excited at the chance of a real event and Dean and Kev ran the Ultra (33 miles!!) at the end of October. They ran from Dunwich through mud, swamps, sand and shingle to complete it in an amazing time of 5hrs 30mins. Dean was quoted as saying 'was awesome but hard going. It was both our first ultra, but maybe the last!' We will see, that's what they all say!

Simon and Oli took on the trail overmarathon event of 27miles, also starting at Dunwich through beautiful countryside of mud, water and sand to Walberswick, down to Minsmere nature reserve and back. Finishing in an impressive time of 4hrs and 27 mins.

Run to the Sea Sam completed the Run to the Sea trail Ultra Marathon 50K!!! Following the Castleman Trailway (an old railway line) to Bournemouth, finishing on Hengistbury Head nature reserve. A beautiful route and completed in her fastest 50k time of 5:45:43!

HUFC Wildcats

A number of HUFC Wildcats recently took part in the Suffolk 4v4 festival at Copleston High School, Ipswich. Hadleigh sent Under 7s, 8s, 9s, and U10s teams to play in games with Woodbridge, Felixstowe, Achilles, Capel and Coplestonians.

Much fun and laughter was had by all.

Hadleigh - Top of the table in Babergh Local Football Facilities Plan Readers of HCN will be pleased to note that following the publication of a report emanating from a national consultancy project sponsored by the Football Association, The Premier League and Sport England (on behalf of the Government), Hadleigh has been cited within the Babergh District Report as the area most in need of a 3G Artificial Grass Pitch. Full details of the report can be found at https://localplans.footballfoundation.org.uk/ Town Councillor Rolf Beggerow who is also Chairman of Hadleigh United Football Club said “This is great news for Hadleigh. The Babergh report follows a national and regional consulting exercise involving the Suffolk FA, numerous Clubs and Organisations involved in provision of football facilities and it has come at a good time following the Town Council’s recent approval to publish their Vision document for developing a 3G AGP Pitch at the Layham Road Sports Ground together with building a new Sports Pavilion that was damaged by a Fire and has been boarded up since June 2020. https://hadleigh.suffolk.cloud/assets/Meetings/202021/Layham-Road-Sports-Ground-Working-Group/11-2020-LRSG-WG/3G-AGPVision.pdf Both reports recognise that in Hadleigh many of our local Sports Clubs have outgrown the facilities available to them and the prospect of developing an enclosed full size 3G All Weather Floodlit facility at the Layham Road Sports Ground is great news for our local Sports Clubs who provide such a great voluntary service to the Local Community.

It is also clear that the fact that Hadleigh scores as the highest priority area for a 3G in the Babergh District does not in any way guarantee project approval and funding support. We will have to follow the normal funding bid processes for this size of Project. We have a lot of work ahead of us but the prospects are looking good.

The Layham Road Sports Ground Working Group met recently to kick start the planning process and they will be producing the plans for the Town Council to consider. Once we have some firm plans agreed we shall begin the process of seeking funding support from Babergh District Council and we will be reaching out to other organisations to compliment the major funding we hope to secure from the Football Foundation and Rugby Football Union. Let’s hope the COVID19 situation does not hamper progress.
