Summer Term 2
On Thursday 20 June, Habs Elstree schools gathered together for our first ever COP event. It was so lovely for Mrs Best and I to see the Prep and Junior School collaborating successfully for this event, and to see the friendships extend across the two schools. It was also an excellent opportunity for the Year 6 students who joined in with the Senior School activities, helping to aid with their transition to the Senior School. Our focus for the day was Water and Marine, and the students took part in a range of activities from Turtle Conservation to Nature Drawing. I was particularly proud of our Eco-council members from Year 5 who spoke at the General Assembly of COP as our Junior and Prep School representatives. They addressed the whole school community with courage and ambition to announce our Junior School sustainability pledges for the next academic year. Moksha (3 A) was given a roar of cheering and clapping after speaking about her Points of Light award and role as a sustainability advocate. The Habs community came together to vote for our top 5 pledges which were debated on by our Sixth Form students, and these pledges have already launched at Habs, following the event. Our Habs sustainability pledges will be formally released next week.
Today has marked the end of our Summer Term Family Friday sessions which have been a real highlight for me this term. It has been so lovely to see so many of you in our classrooms admiring your daughter’s work. The talks today focussed on ‘Oracy in the Junior School,’ ‘Written Methods in Maths,’ and ‘Building Strong Mental Health and Coping Strategies,’ and they were warmly received by the parents who were able to attend. Following on from this morning’s session on ‘Oracy in the Junior School,’ Mr Bloch has recommended parents to read ‘Transform Teaching and Learning through Talk – The Oracy Imperative’ written by Amy Gaunt and Alice Scott. Please click here to learn more about discussing Oracy at home. Thank you to those of you who have been attending our Family Friday series, and I hope they were informative and helpful for you all.
I am excited to announce that from Friday 28 June we will be trialling uploading our weekly newsletter on Firefly. Firefly is an excellent resource for you to receive regular updates on your daughter’s progress. I understand there were some issues regarding app usage and we have been in touch with Firefly directly to fix these issues. A letter will be sent next week with more information regarding the new usage of Firefly.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend.
Mrs Claire Brown Head of Junior SchoolHabs Girls’ Summer Read ‘24 has launched this week, aiming to promote everyone’s enjoyment of books and book discussion.
Each pupil from Rainbow to Year 5 will receive a book to read over the holidays (Year 6 will take part in the Senior School Summer Read), and this year our books share the theme of Reuse and Recycle. Pupils have heard about the Summer Read in Library lessons, and books will be distributed on Monday July 1, along ideas for some suggested activities linked to the books’ themes.
.
We encourage you and your family to read and talk about the book together, and get involved in the activities. When we return to school in September, pupils will have further opportunities to share their thoughts, opinions and enthusiasm for the books in Library lessons, and show us the results of any activities they have chosen to do.
We hope you and your children enjoy our Summer Read 2024.
Tooled Up Education have created, and regularly update, guides for moving up to different year groups. Although the resource linked below is suggested for Year 7 transition, it is still useful for all year groups.
The book above, ‘Sharing a shell,’ by Julia Donaldson and Lydia Monks is a new addition to our book corner at Habs and we look forward to reading it with our students, in these next few weeks of change. In line with COP and our focus on marine and water, we hope the students enjoy the underwater story.
Please click here for the TooledUp Moving Up Guide.

Please take some time to look at the menu with your child, in advance. If your child has any food intolerances, please ensure they understand the food choices for each day. Pupils have been reminded that there are always Allergy Champions in the serveries who they can speak to if they are unsure about appropriate food choices for them.
IMPORTANT UPDATE
We are excited to announce that we will be trialling Firefly for our weekly newsletter. There will be no newsletter sent via school post next Friday, and instead we will be uploading to Firefly. A letter will be sent next week with more information.
IMPORTANT REMINDER
Please kindly remember that, in line with government guidance, grapes or olives should be cut in half and cherries should be de-stoned if these foods are brought in for snacks. A full list of permitted breaktime snacks can be found in the Parent Information Booklet.
SUNDAY 30 JUNE
At this year’s joint schools' summer fair, the Habs’ Boys’ Parents’ Guild will be running a tombola which is always hugely popular with the students. Your child has been sent home with a pot to fill, they are welcome to decorate the pot and put their name on it. Please could we ask that they fill it with any combination of sweets, chocolate, toys, puzzles etc - basically anything they would like to receive themselves. Please note that any food items will need to be free from nuts and sesame seeds. The girls can still return the filled pot to the Junior School reception and these will form the prizes for the tombola.
The Habs’ Boys’ Parents’ Guild will additionally have a book and toy stall at the fair. If you have any children's books in good condition or unused or nearly new puzzles and games you would like to donate, they would gratefully received by the Guild. Similarly, these can be dropped off by your child at Junior School reception - these will be collected on a regular basis.

Habs Choristers is an auditioned choir that sings three services a year outside of school. Potential choristers do not need to be taking voice lessons and, although being able to read musical notation would be an advantage, it is not a requirement – the choir is open to all who enjoy singing to a high standard. This year the Habs Choristers has performed at St John the Baptist Church, Chipping Barnet, All Saints, Margaret Street in London and, on 22 June, will sing at Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge. For our services outside of school the group is joined by professional musicians, most of whom are former Cambridge Choral Scholars. For an idea of the sort of performances that the choir will give, please click the links below:
Evensong – Corpus Christi College, Cambridge – June 2023
Carol Service – St John the Baptist Church, Chipping Barnet – December 2023
Evensong – All Saints, Margaret Street – April 2024
Auditions for next will be held at lunchtimes on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 June and will be conducted by me and a member of the Junior School Music team. Rehearsals are held between 8.00 – 8.30am on Tuesday and Thursday and will begin the following week; taking up a place in the choir requires attendance at both weekly rehearsals. Please discuss this new opportunity with your child and to register for an audition please fill in this form.
The audition
Sing the opening choruses and opening verse of the hymn: All things bright and beautiful
All things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small.
All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God that made them all.
Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings. He made their glowing colours, And made their tiny wings.
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small.
All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God that made them all.
Sing back some phrases of an unfamiliar piece
Sing some scales to assess range
Habs Choristers aims to provide an opportunity for girls to sing choral music of the English Choral Tradition to a high standard through the creation of an auditioned musical ensemble at the Junior School. The pupils may be exposed to a style of music and singing they might not previously have encountered and the choir will work with professional musicians on a regular basis. In creating this ensemble the school will promote a cultural experience consistent with the school’s historical foundation but which is open to pupils from all religious and cultural backgrounds; the choir will visit places of cultural importance to sing.
As previously stated the music that the choir will sing will be sacred and the services in which they will sing outside of school will be Christian. However, and I can’t stress this strongly enough, this should present no barrier to anyone of any faith or none auditioning for the choir. My own experience as a singer is that the world of choral music is very diverse with everyone feeling able to sing, what is in essence, excellent music set to profound and poetic texts. For some the words have greater meaning but for others they do not.
