Dear Parents and Guardians,
As we reach the end of another busy and successful term, we want to take a moment to reflect on the role sport continues to play in the life of our school and to thank you for your ongoing support.
Sport at Habs is about much more than winning matches or earning medals, though we are incredibly proud of the successes our students have achieved this year. It’s about building character, learning resilience, developing leadership, and above all, finding joy in physical activity. Whether competing at county level or simply enjoying a lunchtime game with friends, our students are growing as athletes, teammates, and individuals.
This term, we’ve seen record levels of participation across a wide range of sports. Our teams have represented the school with pride, and many students have taken on new challenges—trying unfamiliar activities, training with discipline, and learning from both victory and defeat. It has been particularly heartening to see so many students involved, from those just starting their journey in Year 7 to our Year 12 students acting as role models and leaders.
These achievements don’t happen by chance. They are the result of dedicated staff, committed students, and supportive families. We are immensely grateful to the teachers and coaches who give their time and energy so generously, and to you, our parent community, for everything you do behind the scenes driving to fixtures, cheering from the sidelines, and encouraging your children to stay active and engaged.
Looking ahead, we are excited to build on this momentum. Our goal remains simple: to ensure every student has access to a high-quality, inclusive, and inspiring sporting experience one that supports their wellbeing, strengthens their confidence, and fosters a lifelong love of sport.
Thank you once again for your support this term. We look forward to all that next term will bring. The best is yet to come!
With best wishes,
Miss Lizzie Wright and Miss Lauren Scott Co-Directors of Sport
This year has marked a fantastic period of growth and achievement for cricket at Habs. With over 21 fixtures played and an impressive 15 wins, it's been a year to celebrate both on and off the pitch
One of the biggest developments has been the expansion of our cricket programme, including the exciting use of facilities at the Boys’ School. We've also introduced a dedicated co-curricular club for girls to develop their hard ball cricket skills – a huge step forward for the sport at Habs Girls.
Participation has been incredible, and thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of our players, we made history this year by playing our first ever hard ball cricket match at Habs Girls. Led by captain Kheya S (Y12), the team – made up of students from Year 7 through to Year 12 – showcased brilliant fielding and bowling, securing a memorable win by 8 wickets.
This is only the beginning. The PE department is thrilled by the progress so far and excited to keep building on this momentum. We can’t wait to see even more of you getting involved and continuing the success of cricket at Habs!
This summer term has been an incredible one for our athletics teams, with outstanding performances and personal bests at District, County, and Regional level competitions.
On Saturday 8th June, several of our students competed in the Hertfordshire Schools Track & Field Championships. We were proud that three students were crowned County Champions: Tara E (Y9) in the U15 Girls Long Jump, Tiffany A (Y10) in the U17 Girls Triple Jump, and Eniola O (Y10) in the U17 Girls High Jump. We also saw impressive results from Rio K (Y7) and Aimee P (Y9), who both secured second place in the U13 and U15 Girls 1500m respectively, and from Jade O (Y10), who placed third in the U17 Girls Discus.
On Wednesday 18th June, our Year 7 to 10 athletes took part in the District Athletics Championships. We saw fantastic performances across all year groups, and a huge congratulations goes to our Year 10 Girls, who finished 1st overall. We were also thrilled to have seven students crowned District Champions—a brilliant achievement! Two of those champions were also awarded Performance of the Day: Rio K (Y7) for her win in the 1500m with a personal best of 5 minutes and 15 seconds, and Eniola O (Y10) for her high jump of 1.60 metres, which was both a personal best and a new district record.
Throughout the term, our U14 and U16 girls athletics teams have been competing in the Hertfordshire County League, taking on schools from across the county each week. After six fiercely contested matches, the U14 team secured 3rd place in Area A, while the U16 team achieved an impressive 2nd place—earning both teams a spot in the County League Final held on Tuesday 1st July.
At the final, both teams delivered outstanding performances. The U14s finished a very respectable 4th in a tightly contested competition, while the U16s narrowly missed out on the top spot, finishing 2nd overall— just one point behind the winners.
A huge congratulations to all our athletes for an incredible term of hard work, dedication, and success.
Tennis at Habs continues to play a huge role in the summer term, from clubs and fixtures to recreational play during lunch times. Feeling the buzz from the tennis courts is a highlight which we look forward to each year. An impressive turnout has seen over 160 students attend clubs across year 7 –10, progressing physical skills alongside the wider social and emotional benefits gained in this environment.
Our aim to engage as many students as possible in competitive contexts has developed this year, enabling over 80 students to participate in well-matched competition, offering positive experiences in competitive contexts. Our competitions have included District Leagues and Finals day for Nicola Mabbitt, LTA Youth Schools League for Division 1 and 2, County Tournaments and the ISTA Championships.
The year began with the U14 County Tournament, which Habs entered two pairs. Congratulations to Nyla C (Y9) & Keya S (Y9), and Amy F (Y9) & Sasha Z (Y10) for showing exceptional teamplay throughout the competition. Amy and Sasha progressed to the Championship defeating Chancellors in the quarters, Queenswood in the semis and Dame Alice Owens in the final. Their impressive display crowned them U14 County Champions.
The Nicola Mabbitt League features competitive fixtures against schools in our district. A big congratulations to the Year 8 team for finishing 2nd in the district league, and to our Year 10s Sophie B, Roxy C, Ishaa V and Emily S for finishing top of the league and qualifying for the finals. With wins against St Albans, Berkhamsted and Broxbourne, we are delighted to say that the team were crowned Nicola Mabbitt Champions!
Our annual Senior Sports Day returned to StoneX Stadium for the fourth consecutive year – and what a day it was! With a buzzing atmosphere and a spirit of healthy competition, students gave their all across a packed schedule of track and field events.
On the track, the action was non-stop with hurdles, sprints, middle-distance races, and the everpopular squadron relay drawing loud support from the stands. In the field, athletes demonstrated their strength and skill in long jump, triple jump, high jump, javelin, discus, shot put, the tug of war, and the explosive medicine ball throw.
Beyond the competition, what truly sets this day apart is the exceptional community spirit that shines throughout. It’s a collaborative celebration involving students, staff, and supporters – one of the largest and most inclusive sports days seen anywhere in the UK. The event provided a platform for some incredible individual performances, with students showcasing their talents in front of a large and appreciative crowd. Yet equally memorable were the moments of selflessness and determination, especially in the long-distance races, where students stepped up to earn valuable points for their Houses. Some of the biggest cheers were reserved for these displays of resilience and heart – examples of what it means not just to challenge oneself, but to lift others in the process.
A huge congratulations to this year’s champions – The Orange Griffins (Powell and Calverts) –who delivered an outstanding all-round team performance to take home the title!
Thank you to the many individuals who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this day possible. Through months of planning, dedication, sweat – and possibly a few tears – you’ve helped create something truly special. There really is no other event quite like it.
