Dear Parents and Guardians,

It is hard to believe we are already at the end of another academic year. As I reflect on the past 12 months, I am filled with immense pride at the incredible achievements and vibrant spirit that have defined our school community this year. This newsletter is a celebration of those successes, a snapshot of the energy and dedication that our students and staff pour into everything they do.

This year has been particularly special as we commemorated our 150th anniversary, a significant milestone that has allowed us to reflect on our rich history while looking forward to a bright future. We were also incredibly honoured to host a Royal Visit from HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, a truly memorable occasion for everyone involved. The whole school lined the entrance route, cheering and waving flags. Of this moment, it has been commented in a letter of thanks that His Royal Highness has never before experienced a welcome like the one provided and nor should we expect it to be beaten!

In this newsletter, you will find highlights from some truly spectacular events that have taken place this year – HabsFest, our inaugural music festival that showcased the incredible musical talent within our school; Sports Day at StoneX Stadium, where our students demonstrated outstanding athleticism and teamwork; AIR Studios music recordings and our annual Art Exhibition of GCSE and A Level work.

Of course, no end-of-year reflection would be complete without bidding a heartfelt farewell to our wonderful Class of 2025. We wish them all the very best as they embark on their next adventures and look forward to welcoming them back soon, no longer as students, but instead as Old Haberdashers.

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the Parents’ Guild for their ongoing support and dedication. This year has been such a special year at Habs Girls, and the Parents’ Guild have supported us in so many ways including our 150 year celebrations. At the end of the term, we say farewell and thank you to Paul Cuddihy who has served as Chair with such dedication and warmth over the past two years. We wish Paul all the very best for the future and we look forward to welcoming Chetan Shah as our new Chair.

Welcome to our new 2025/26 Prefects!

We are delighted to announce that our new Head Prefect for 2025/2026 is Larissa (L6 HR). We are thrilled to also announce that Vaidika (L6 BM) and Ava (L6 PW) have been appointed as Deputy Heads.

They will play an active role in leading the Prefect team, the Sixth Form and the wider school community. The Prefect team were elected by their year group and teachers and assumed their roles with immediate effect at the beginning of term.

Class of 2025

The Class of 2025 returned to school for their presentation ceremony and a celebration of their time at Habs. They received their bibles and certificates in the Prevett Hall, hearing from speaker Tomisin Osibona (OH 2019), who was the Head Prefect when they were in Year 7.

Tomisin then received an emotional vote of thanks from our outgoing Head Prefect, Omaserichi (U6 JA).

Students and parents from Habs Girls and Habs Boys then headed out to the Croquet Lawn for drinks and a BBQ. This was a truly wonderful occasion and it was lovely to see the students, staff and parents across both schools socialise and reflect on their time at the school.

We look forward to welcoming the year group back to school later this year to receive their A Level certificates.

A year of debating success

Both Habs Girls and Habs Boys have had a stellar academic year in debating, with weekly training sessions, national competitions, weekend coaching sessions from a debating world champion and countless interhouse events.

Some competition highlights include:

LSE Schools, November 2024 –Feeza (L6 KP) and Nazim (11S2) broke into the Bronze Finals. They narrowly missed out on a win.

Durham Schools, March 2025 –Following five qualification rounds, seven out of our eight teams broke (reached the final rounds of a competition). Aanya (10 A) and Tamara (10 Ansuz) qualified for the Novice Grand Final, where they were runners-up. Aarav (11H2), Daniel (11S2), Lucas (11C2), Madhav (SFC1), Richard (11R1) and Sohan (SFM2) qualified for the Open Semi-Finals.

We also hosted our inaugural Intra-School Debating Competition, organised by our Year 13 debaters. Feeza (L6 KP) and Nazim (11S2) were crowned the

winners of this event following four qualification rounds.

Debating is an invaluable skill that allows students to contemplate views that are different from their own, increasing empathy. It allows them to critically analyse arguments, increase their confidence and work together to outsmart their intellectual opponents.

The students have debated on a range of interesting topics, including but not limited to: social media anonymity; aestheticisation of suffering in music; environmental activism; and performanceenhancing drugs in sports. The students hope to continue building on this success next academic year as the societies join forces –and hopefully bring home some silverware.

A musical win to celebrate the shipping forecast

Huge congratulations to Tamara (9 Ansuz), the national winner of the ‘New Sailing Sounds’ National Music Competition!

This exciting competition invited primary and secondary school students from across the UK to celebrate 100 years of the shipping forecast. In partnership with the Met Office, participants were challenged to create an original musical tribute to ‘Sailing By’ - the iconic orchestral piece by Ronald Binge, famously played every night on BBC Radio 4 before the shipping forecast.

Netball partnership

We have an exciting new partnership with London Pulse, one of the UK’s leading netball franchises, through their School Netball Support Partnership programme. London Pulse aims to bridge the gap between school and elite netball, providing a wealth of resources to improve player and team performance.

This collaboration sees both our Junior and Senior Schools benefiting from world-class support. Our students will receive high-performance coaching, player development opportunities, inspirational workshops, elite student athlete mentoring, career shadowing and discover the talent pathways into elite netball.

Our staff will also receive top-level training and resources, supporting the continued growth of our outstanding netball provision. This includes an in-person training session from an experienced coach, lesson plans and technical and tactical workshops.

This is a brilliant step forward in our commitment to sporting excellence and we cannot wait to see how this partnership will inspire our Habs’ community both on and off the court.

Tamara’s brilliant composition, ‘Gales in Viking’, stood out among the entries and earned her the top spot nationally! Her inspiring piece was performed live at a special Met Office centenary event on Tuesday 1 July, attended by the Met Office CEO, Penny Endersby CBE, alongside leaders from the UK shipping industry.

We are incredibly proud of Tamara’s creativity, ambition and achievement - well done!

Podium finish in the GSA Tournament

Book Drive

Our football team, comprised of students from both the Junior and Senior schools, competed in the Girls’ School Association (GSA) Tournament at Warwick High School, earning a phenomenal podium finish in second place in the second division!

The tournament was not just a showcase of athletic ability, but also a celebration of team spirit, perseverance and community. Across nine hardfought matches, including four wins, three draws and two losses, the girls demonstrated impressive technical skill, strategic thinking and unwavering support for one another.

We collected over 900 books for this year’s Book Drive on behalf of the Children’s Book Project, which seeks to tackle book poverty and give every child the opportunity to own their own book.

The charity works closely with women’s groups, children’s centres, prisons and schools to give pre-loved books to children around the country.

This is our second year of supporting this wonderful charity, with students and staff from the Junior and Senior schools, as well as professional services staff, working alongside each other in a collaborative and communityminded spirit.

We would like to thank everyone who took part, either by donating books or by giving their time.

Habs art makes its way to Antarctica!

Huge congratulations to Alexa (8 Aleph), Millie (7 Aesc) and Albiona (8 Alpha), whose flag designs have made it all the way to Antarctica!

As part of a competition for Years 7 and 8 to design flags for Antarctica Day, their creative entries were chosen to represent our school on a global stage.

Their flags were taken aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough and were photographed by steward Doreen Thomson at St Andrew’s Bay, South Georgia. The region is home to one of the largest King Penguin colonies in the world, with over 150,000 pairs!

We are so proud that our students’ creativity has made it to such a remote and incredible place. Thank you to the amazing crew aboard the Sir David Attenborough, including PhD students, engineers, divers and ecological experts, who made the journey possible.

Celebrating 150 years of Habs Girls’

The Haberdashers’ Girls’ School has marked its 150th anniversary with a vibrant series of events spanning from May 2024 throughout the year, celebrating the rich history, heritage and community spirit, before culminating with the Royal Visit.

May 2024: Memories and memorabilia reunion

The celebrations began on 19 May 2024 with a special reunion event titled ‘Memories and Memorabilia’, inviting all former pupils (known as ‘Old Girls’) who attended the school during its years in Acton. This event commemorated the 50th anniversary of the school’s last term at Acton before the move to Elstree in September 1974. Attendees shared cherished memories and brought personal items of memorabilia, enriching the collective history. A large exhibition curated by school archivist, Mrs Curati, showcased the school’s Acton years and was met with great enthusiasm.

The exhibition was subsequently displayed again in July at the end-of-year staff party. For the first time, former members of staff were invited to join the celebration, bridging past and present school communities.

June 2024: ‘In Her Shoes’ initiative and historical expedition

In June, the school launched the ‘In Her Shoes’ initiative, led by Mrs Wright, encouraging departments to engage with historical experiences of past pupils and staff through activities and assemblies throughout the year. A highlight of this initiative was a two-day expedition to Dorchester, led by Mr Yarlett, recreating the evacuation of pupils from Acton on 2 September 1939 before the Second World War. Participants visited Dorchester Middle School (formerly Dorchester County Girls’ School) whose facilities had been shared during the evacuation for a full academic year. The expedition attracted local media attention, underlining its educational and historical significance.

September 2024: Geography department’s historical mapping

September saw the Geography department embark on a fascinating project mapping the school’s catchment areas over time. Using anonymised home address data from cohorts entering every ten years between 1930 and 2020, the department illustrated how the school’s reach has evolved geographically through the decades.

February 2025: Drama department’s theatrical homage

In February 2025, the Drama department revived ‘Our Country’s Good’, a production previously staged by Habs Girls in 1997 and involving past collaborations in 1991. This theatrical tribute connected current students with the school’s dramatic heritage.

Spring 2025: Junior School’s Victorian Week and museum exhibition

At the end of the Spring term, the Junior School had an off-timetable week themed around Victorian schooling. Mrs Curati created a museum exhibition focused on the school’s early years in Hoxton (1875–1898). Pupils explored historical artefacts and experienced lessons in the style of Victorian times, deepening their appreciation for the school’s origins.

2025 Film Project: A glimpse into school life then and now

The Junior School is also producing a film in 2025 comparing contemporary school life with that of 1974, inspired by the original cine film ‘Goodbye Acton, Hello Elstree’. This historic film, documenting the school’s move, has been digitised and is available on Vimeo, preserving a pivotal moment in the school’s history.

June 2025: Anniversary celebrations with Parents’ Guild Summer Ball and Reunion Day

On 7 June 2025, the Parents’ Guild hosted a grand Summer Ball in celebration of the anniversary, bringing together families and staff for an elegant evening.

The following day, Sunday 8 June, marked the annual Reunion Day with Mrs Curati unveiling another comprehensive exhibition covering the full 150 years of the school’s history, celebrating its remarkable journey from its founding to the present day.

The year-long programme of events offered a heartfelt tribute to The Haberdashers’ Girls’ School’s enduring legacy, connecting generations of students, staff and families in celebration of the school’s milestone anniversary.

Habs Girls welcomes HRH The Duke of Edinburgh to commemorate the School’s 150th anniversary

On Wednesday 4 June, we welcomed His Royal Highness, The Duke of Edinburgh KG, KT, GCVO, to officially commemorate our 150th anniversary and open the Edinburgh Rehearsal Room.

His Royal Highness’ visit celebrated the School’s milestone and highlighted our commitment to offering outstanding educational and partnership opportunities and the strong emphasis on supporting the local community. The Duke, a member of the Worshipful Company of Haberdashers, has a longstanding connection to the school, which is one of several educational institutions supported by the Haberdashers’ Company in its centuries-long commitment to providing outstanding education.

On arrival at the campus, The Duke of Edinburgh was greeted with hundreds of flag-waving students from Reception to Year 13. His Royal Highness was formally welcomed by: Dr Hazel Bagworth-Mann, Headmistress Haberdashers’ Girls’ School, Mr Gus Lock – Executive Principal, Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools, Mr Simon Cartmell, OBE – Chair of the Board of Governors, Haberdashers’ Elstree Schools, Sir William Russell – Master of the Haberdashers’ Company, Robert Voss CBE CStJ, HM Lord-Lieutenant of Hertfordshire and in the presence of distinguished guests including Nicholas Buxton, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire and Brigadier Angus Watson, Clerk to the Haberdashers’ Company.

The Duke toured the school and met both staff and students. His Royal Highness was welcomed inside the school with a display of photographs and memorabilia related to previous Royal Visits to

Habs Girls, followed by meeting the younger Junior School pupils who excitedly discussed and showcased their community art project on the theme of love through haberdashery.

From there, His Royal Highness visited the Senior School and was greeted with a moving choir performance of We Thank You by Sarah Quartel, specially commissioned for the school’s 150th anniversary. The choir spoke to HRH about the piece and their love of music.

His Royal Highness then walked to the drama studios and watched a short piece of devised drama by Year 9 Drama Scholars. Headmistress, Dr Hazel BagworthMann gave a short opening address, celebrating our strong commitment to the creative arts.

The Duke unveiled a commemorative plaque marking the grand opening of the Edinburgh Rehearsal Room. After the plaque unveiling, His Royal Highness took time to speak with the drama students who had performed. His genuine interest and warmth was felt by all.

The Duke also met with students who discussed their involvement with The Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme. The students shared pictures from recent expeditions, stories from their volunteering work and talked about what they have learnt from and the impact of taking part in the scheme.

The Duke’s visit concluded with a delicious lunch in the Dining Hall, where he conversed with staff and dignitaries. The students were thrilled by the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet and share their experiences with a member of the Royal Family.

Careers Networking Breakfasts

Over the course of this academic year, we have held a series of networking breakfasts for Sixth Form students in areas including degree apprenticeships, public sector, charities, science, engineering and alternatives to medicine.

These sessions have been a wonderful opportunity for students to ask professionals about the application process through to the day-to-day experiences of a particular career. For example, we were very lucky to have two recent OHs who are doing Degree Apprenticeships in Law and Finance respectively. Students were able to hear first-hand their thoughts on the advantages and disadvantages of degree apprenticeships compared to standard degrees.

Economics Day returns

On Thursday 19 June, Habs proudly hosted the re-launch of the popular Economics Day - an event that had been paused since the Covid pandemic. It was fantastic to see two rooms full of energy, with students fully engaged in a dynamic business simulation exercise led by Enterprise Skills. Over 90 Year 12 Economics students took part, many of whom are planning to pursue Economics or related subjects at university. We were also delighted to welcome 12 visiting students from Haberdashers’ Hatcham College, adding to the collaborative spirit of the day.

The highlight came at the end, when 16 outstanding students were announced as winners of a unique opportunity: they will spend a day in July participating in a specially designed programme at a top investment bank - an exciting reward and valuable real-world insight into the world of finance.

Through attending these sessions, we hope that students came across pathways they will never previously have considered, as well as build their confidence and networking skills.

We are extremely grateful to the external professionals for volunteering their time and sharing their advice, expertise and experience with our students.

Years 7 and 8 joint disco lights up Bourne Hall

The Bourne Hall was buzzing with energy as over 300 Year 7 and 8 students from Habs Girls and Habs Boys packed the venue for an unforgettable disco! The hall was transformed into a vibrant dance floor where students danced non-stop to a fantastic mix of pop classics that had everyone singing. In true school disco tradition, a conga line snaked through the crowd and the atmosphere was pure joy.

Fueling the fun, students enjoyed pizza and candy floss that kept spirits high throughout the night. But the excitement did not stop there - glitter tattoos sparkled, neon glow sticks lit up the dance floor and table football matches heated up the side areas.

For those wanting to capture the magic, a classic photo booth and a 360-degree photo booth snapped dynamic shots that will be cherished for years to come.

Bollywood Night 2025

Bollywood Night 2025 was a vibrant celebration of culture, community and talent. Students came together for an evening filled with dazzling performances, mouthwatering food and joyous atmosphere.

The night featured a fantastic mix of singing, dancing and music - from heartfelt solos to energetic group medleys. Highlights included a powerful vocal performance, an elegant dance and a show-stopping senior medley that brought the house down. With colourful outfits, delicious Indian cuisine and a buzzing dance floor, the night truly captured the spirit of Bollywood. It was an unforgettable experience for all.

‘Bollywood Night 2025 was an absolute blast - my first time and totally unforgettable! Singing ‘Tum Hi Ho’ was a dream (nerves and all!) and the crowd's cheers gave me a real boost. Habs Girls' dance was fab, and our seniors' medley dance was pure magic. The food? Delicious! And I had the best laughs with my friends all night!’ - Adi (9R2)

Bird & Bird EDI Conference

A group of us had the incredible opportunity to visit Bird & Bird, a leading law firm in London, where we took part in a studentled panel as part of an industry EDI Conference. The event brought together professionals from a range of industries who wanted to hear directly from young people, the future workforce, about what true inclusion should look like.

I shared my perspective as a student with ADHD, highlighting how neurodiversity is often overlooked in inclusion conversations, despite being just as important as race and gender. I spoke about my hopes for future workplaces to understand that fairness does not mean treating everyone the same but rather providing the right support so that everyone can thrive.

We also discussed how competitive industries often have a narrow view of ‘professionalism’, a view that can unintentionally exclude neurodivergent individuals, even when they have the potential to succeed. It was empowering to share our views with professionals who have the ability to drive meaningful change. Although we are still students, it was inspiring to see how open and willing they were to listen and learn from us.

Rainbow Dash and Pride Picnic

The Rainbow Dash brought the spirit of Pride outdoors with a fun and colourful run around the school grounds. Participants dressed in rainbow colours and accessories, dashing their way through the course to music and cheers. It wasn’t about speed: it was about solidarity. Every step taken celebrated visibility, inclusion and the right to be unapologetically yourself.

It concluded with our Pride Party 2025, which was a celebration of love, identity and community. Students and staff came together in a sea of colour, music and glitter to mark the end of Pride Month in style. With music, dancing, face painting and rainbowthemed treats, the atmosphere was full of energy.

Music and Drama

Habs students selected to perform at the Music for Youth National Festival

Huge congratulations to our brilliant students for being selected to perform at the prestigious Music for Youth National Festival!

After competing in the regional heats, our Indian Music Ensemble and Habs Elstree Big Band have earned their place to perform nationally. This is a remarkable achievement, showcasing the dedication and passion of our young musicians.

They will perform at the renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra centre in July, bringing

Habs music to a national stage. This is not just an opportunity to bring the talent of our students to wider audience, but to be part of a remarkable celebration of youth music from all corners of the country.

We are incredibly proud of our students and cannot wait to see them shine in this exciting next chapter of their musical journey.

Students record at AIR Studios

30 students from Habs Girls and Habs Boys joined forces to record four original songs at AIR Studios, a world-famous, industry renowned studio.

Based in Hampstead, AIR Studios was set up in the 70s by George Martin, producer of The Beatles. In its first decade alone, classic albums recorded or engineered at AIR include Meddle by Pink Floyd, Queen’s Sheer Heart Attack, Roxy Music’s For Your Pleasure (and their three following albums), Paul McCartney’s soundtrack to Live and Let Die, Wuthering Heights by Kate Bush and The Pretenders’ eponymous debut album.

Over two days, students from Year 8 to Year 13 recorded four songs, written by Sam Griffiths (renowned songwriter, who recently returned from a major European

tour with his band The Howl and The Hum) and Matthew Herd (our musician-in-residence, and the creative mind behind the band Seafarers), for our recent production, ‘The Video Store at the End of the World’.

The opportunity to work on original music in an esteemed studio was an electrifying and unique experience for our talented students. They played with professionalism, skill and passion to create something entirely new – a process that was both inspiring and exciting.

The resulting album was released at HabsFest, accompanied by a live performance of the original music.

Arts this term

This term, the Art department at Habs has been bursting with creativity, collaboration and celebration, showcasing the talents and hard work of our students through a series of exciting events and projects.

Artist Workshop: Exploring Nature Through Experimental Drawing

Visiting artist Mark Spray brought a fresh perspective to our Year 10 and Year 12 students. During his workshop, students explored the serene environment of the neighbouring fishing lake, drawing inspiration from the calm waters and weeping willows. Mark shared his passion for working outdoors, guiding students through experimental drawing techniques that captured the natural surroundings with innovative flair.

Fashion Workshop with Jimmy Choo Academy

Habs Hall played host to an exclusive fashion workshop courtesy of the Jimmy Choo Academy, where four fortunate Year 10 students, (two from Habs Girls and two from the Habs Boys), had the unique opportunity to work collaboratively on a fashion design brief, creating paper garments in teams. Students also gained a behind-the-scenes glimpse into the organisation of a catwalk show before enjoying the glamour the Jimmy Choo Academy’s own catwalk event.

HMC Art Cluster Group Meeting

Our Art department was proud to host the HMC Art Cluster Group meeting, welcoming Heads of Department from across the country. The day was packed with inspiration, featuring talks from the National Society for Education in Art and Design, discussions on the intersection of AI and art and insights from Mark Spray about his recent collaboration with poet Mark Goodwin. It was a valuable opportunity for professional growth and creative exchange.

Year 12 Joint Trip to the Wallace Collection and Tate

To enrich their artistic perspective, Year 12 students embarked on a joint trip to experience the works of renowned artists Grayson Perry at the Wallace Collection and Do Ho Suh at the Tate. Art Scholars Project: Celebrating 150 Years of Habs

In a wonderful community-driven project, our Art Scholars have been creating a visual artwork to mark the 150th anniversary of Habs. Inspired by artist Ann Carrington’s innovative use of buttons, who led a workshop at Habs Hall earlier this year, students and staff have been collecting buttons from home to contribute to this special piece. The collaborative artwork promises to be a vibrant tribute to our school’s rich heritage.

This term has truly been a testament to the passion, talent and collaborative spirit flourishing within the Habs art community. We look forward to many more inspiring projects and events in the future.

MUSIC FESTIVAL

HABSFEST DEBUTS WITH A SPECTACULAR SHOWCASE OF TALENT

HabsFest marked its inaugural appearance on our calendar with an unforgettable celebration of creativity. The event featured a striking Glastonbury-style arch stage set up on the croquet lawn, with fringe stages spread across the campus. Attendees enjoyed a full day of exceptional music, compelling drama, stunning visual art and much more.

Audiences were treated to performances of jazz, rock and Indian music, as well as a dance showcase and a barbershop quartet. The event ended with a performance from our brilliant orchestra, playing original music from our production ‘The Video Store at the End of the World’. The atmosphere was electric, and it was fantastic to see the Habs community come together to honour the arts. This joyful festival showcased a wealth of talent and enthusiasm, making it clear that HabsFest is set to become a much-anticipated annual highlight.

Celebrating artistic excellence with six acceptances into the National Youth Theatre

Six of our incredibly talented students have been accepted into the prestigious National Youth Theatre (NYT) of Great Britain following auditions earlier this year. This is a remarkable achievement, especially considering the fierce competition, with around 4,500 young people auditioning from across the UK. These six students bring the total number of Habs students accepted into the NYT over the past eight years to 36.

Himidi (L6 CS), Liberty (9 Aleph), Daniel (10C2), Veer (10H1), Victor (10J1) and Saul (SFM1) now join the ranks of the NYT, where they will have the opportunity to audition for and work with the company until they are 26.

In addition to celebrating the success of our own students, we are proud to highlight our new partnership with the National Youth Theatre, through which Habs has become an audition hub. This initiative has allowed young people from local state schools to audition for free while receiving mentorship and training in audition techniques. We are particularly proud that two students from our partner school, London Academy, were also accepted into the NYT.

This acceptance into the National Youth Theatre is not just an individual achievement; it represents the collective success of our students, teachers and the entire school community, all of whom work together to support the development of these young artists.

Instrumental Music Scheme launched for Year 3 pupils

We are thrilled to be launching our Instrumental Music Scheme for our Year 3 pupils - a unique opportunity where every child will learn an orchestral instrument, fully funded by the school for the entire academic year!

In anticipation for next year, our Year 2 pupils explored a world of sound, trying out string, woodwind and brass instruments. With inspiring sessions led by visiting music teachers, our performance hall was filled with curiosity and excitement. For many, it is the first spark of what could become a powerful musical passion.

At the heart of our Music department is community, creativity and collaboration. From performing onstage with the London Symphony Orchestra to recording at the iconic Abbey Road Studios, our pupils experience music in its most brilliant forms.

Our students have gone on to earn scholarships at prestigious conservatoires and top universities, perform in national orchestras, and take centre stage in major West End productions.

YEAR 9 AND 10 PUT ON AN ASTRONOMICAL PERFORMANCE

It was an absolute pleasure to watch the two Senior School plays towards the end of the Summer term: T Minus 10 Seconds and A Shared Space. A joint effort from Year 9 and 10 students from both schools, these original plays were two fresh and complementary takes on the theme of space.

Ground Control to Major Tom!

In T Minus 10 Seconds, the pull of space from the dawn of man to the present day is felt as a crew of young people embark on a selective space programme venturing to the outer edges of the solar system. With bleeding-edge technology faltering, we wonder: is it worth the risk? A highlight of the performance were the crew’s touching memories of the mundane lives they left behind: fried eggs, the crunch of leaves and awkward first dates.

This vigorous, fast-past piece was particularly joyful in its movement work. Directed by Matt Wells, the dynamic, playful and experimental choreography was an utter pleasure to watch, culminating in those tragical final beats. This original work in crafting a whole language of movement was a real testament to the dedication of the performers involved and a fresh injection of life into Habs drama.

An interview with Olivia Rodrigo revealed that her litmus test for men was if they wanted to go to space. ‘I just think if you want to go to space, you're a little too full of yourself,’ she says. No play has been a more compelling exploration of this than the second piece of the night: A Shared Space. This devised piece followed 10 prodigy trainee astronauts on a high-octane trainee programme to be the youngest on the

International Space Station. Tested both physically and emotionally over several weeks, trainees falter, relationships fracture and coordinators wonder whether they have gone too far. We trace honest and vulnerable performances across a testing few weeks and are invested in every character. This pressure cooker of a production, intense yet tender and often incredibly funny, was one of the most compelling productions in recent years here.

A massive well done to all those involved both on and off stage, from the performers to the spectacular tech team, to the directors and Drama department and all the support staff who made it possible. The hard work clearly paid off in a compelling, challenging and utterly spectacular few nights of Habs drama at its very best.

Drama showcase

On what turned out to be the hottest night of the year so far, over 100 students took to the stage in Prevett Hall to share their work at our annual Drama Showcase. The heat did not deter a single performer. If anything, it added to the electric atmosphere of the evening.

This year’s Showcase featured 22 different performances, ranging from monologues and duologues to ensemble scenes, devised work, musical theatre numbers, original writing and more. The result was an evening that truly reflected the depth and breadth of co-curricular drama at Habs Girls.

It was wonderful to see students from every year group performing with such confidence, energy and generosity. Some were stepping into the spotlight for the very first time, while others brought the experience of multiple productions to the stage. Regardless of background or experience, every student brought their unique talents to the process and contributed something meaningful.

The variety of material was part of what made the evening so exciting. We saw Shakespeare delivered with real clarity and impact. Scenes from modern plays and adaptations were performed with a strong sense of ensemble and imagination. There were moments of real hilarity, followed by those that left the audience in thoughtful silence. This variety is not just entertaining; it also shows the range of stories our students are willing to tell and the creative risks they are willing to take.

A highlight of the evening was the work led by our student directors. Their vision and leadership were evident in every rehearsal and performance. They have set a brilliant example for the younger students, not just in how to direct a scene, but in how to create a supportive space where everyone feels they belong. Their care and creativity have been central to the success of this inclusive Showcase.

Thank you to all the students who took part; for your commitment, your collaboration and for reminding us why drama matters. The work we saw on stage was joyful, inclusive and bold. It was a celebration of individuality and shared storytelling and a reminder of what makes Drama at Habs so exciting.

GCSE and A Level art exhibition

Our recent GCSE and A Level Art Exhibition was a stunning showcase of the creativity, technical skill, and personal expression of our exam students. The exhibition featured an impressive range of work, from powerful conceptual pieces to beautifully detailed studies across various media. Each project reflected months of hard work, experimentation and artistic growth. A huge thank you to the Art department for curating such a professional and inspiring display and to all the families, friends and staff who came to celebrate the achievements of our talented artists.

Sport Sports Day – Stone X Stadium

For the fourth year running, our two Senior schools came together for a joint sports day and it was nothing short of superb. The enthusiasm was palpable and the standards from the students were exceptional.

The success of the day must also be attributed to our brilliant staff who ensured every aspect of the day ran smoothly. While it is impossible to thank everyone individually, we greatly appreciate everyone who contributed.

Our sports days are truly in a league of their own and hosting the event at StoneX Stadium has elevated the sense of occasion even further. It was wonderful to see our students in their combined House colours filling an entire stand.

It was our ambition to involve every student across a wide variety of events this year, from traditional Track and Field to the popular Community Mile and the weird and wonderful in-field activities. Everybody got involved, performed their very best and supported one another, embodying perfectly the values we celebrate here at Habs.

Year 9 Netball team shines at Masterclass Tournament in Spain

Our Year 9 Netball team embarked on an unforgettable adventure to Spain to compete in the prestigious Masterclass Netball Tournament, combining sightseeing, fun and fierce competition!

The trip began with a vibrant day in Barcelona, where the girls explored the bustling La Rambla, marvelled at the stunning Cathedral and experienced the excitement of the immersive Barcelona FC attraction. The team then travelled to Salou, where they kicked off the trip with a fun-filled day at the PortAventura theme park, gearing up for the tournament ahead.

On the court, the girls battled fiercely against teams from across Britain. The U14A team delivered an incredible performance by winning the U15 competition - playing up an age group against older, more experienced opponents! The U15 competition had a total of seven teams. Meanwhile, the U14B team dominated their division, taking home the U14 title. The U14C team secured a strong third place and the U14D team fought hard to finish seventh. The U14 competition had 10 teams.

Standout players were recognised by the Masterclass coaches with Most Valuable Players (MVP) awards: Rebecca (9 Aesc) from the A team, Annika (9 Aesc) from the B team, Eva (9 Ansuz) from the C team and Lily (9 A) from the D team. Lily’s achievement was especially inspiring, having returned to competitive play after six months recovering from an operation.

This trip was packed with excitement, teamwork and outstanding achievements - congratulations to all the girls for their amazing performances!

Habs gymnasts secure impressive 5th place at the National Finals

Earlier this year, Jessica (L6 KP), Lottie (8 Ansuz), Mia (L6 KP), Ethan (8H2) and Jacob (11M2) performed outstandingly at the British Schools Gymnastics Association National Floor and Vault Finals.

Having triumphed at the East Regional Championships in Chelmsford earlier this year, the team went on to represent the East of England at the prestigious national finals. Despite facing an exceptionally strong field of competitors, our gymnasts performed with remarkable composure, flair and determination. Their efforts earned them an impressive 5th place, narrowly missing out on a podium finish by less than a point!

Throughout the competition, the team demonstrated not only technical excellence but also exceptional teamwork and sportsmanship, embodying the core values we uphold at Habs. Their commitment and resilience were truly inspiring and the support they showed each other throughout the day was a testament to their character.

We are incredibly proud of all five students for representing the school with such poise and passion on the national stage. Thank you to Miss Burman for her expert coaching and tireless dedication in preparing the team for this remarkable achievement.

Junior Cricket Squad make semi-finals

The Junior Cricket Squad travelled to Lord’s Cricket Ground to participate in the The Lady Taverners U13 Indoor Cricket Competition. The competition featured eight local schools competing for a coveted spot to play nationally.

Throughout the day, the squad of 10 played five matches, advancing out of their group with outstanding victories. The girls successfully made it to the semifinals, securing third place overall.

In the third-place play-off, the girls triumphed in a closely contested match, clinching victory on the final ball with an exceptional catch. The squad demonstrated excellent form and skill throughout the day, taking home the bronze medals. This remarkable achievement marks a promising future for cricket at Habs Girls.

This year has marked a fantastic period of growth and achievement for cricket at Habs. With over 21 fixtures played and an impressive 15 wins, it has been a year to celebrate both on and off the pitch.

One of the biggest developments has been the expansion of our cricket programme, including the exciting use of facilities at Habs Boys. We have also introduced a dedicated co-curricular club for girls to develop their hard ball cricket skills – a huge step forward for the sport at Habs Girls.

We made history this year by playing our first ever hard ball cricket match at Habs Girls. Led by captain Kheya (L6 HS), the team – made up of students from Year 7 through to Year 12 – showcased brilliant fielding and bowling, securing a memorable win by eight wickets.

Tennis

Tennis at Habs continues to play a huge role in the summer term, from clubs and fixtures to recreational play during lunch times. An impressive turnout has seen over 160 students attend clubs across Years 7 to 10, and we have had over 80 students to participate in tennis fixtures.

The year began with an exceptional performance from Amy (9 A) and Sasha (9 Ansuz), crowning them U14 County Champions.

In the Nicola Mabbitt League, we have had competitive fixtures against schools in our district. Years 7 and 8 finished 2nd in the district league, narrowly missing out of the Hertfordshire finals. Year 10 had a brilliant run of matches, finishing top in the district league and therefore qualifying the finals. A successful finals day saw our Year 10 team crowned Nicola Mabbitt Champions. The team was comprised of Emily (10 A), Ishaa (10 A), Roxy (10 Aleph) and Sophie (10 Aleph).

Athletics

This summer term has been an incredible one for our athletics teams, with outstanding performances and personal bests at District, County and Regional level competitions.

On Saturday 8 June, several of our students competed in the Hertfordshire Schools Track and Field Championships. We were proud that three students were crowned County Champions: Tara (9 Alpha) in the U15 Girls Long Jump, Tiffany (10 Ansuz) in the U17 Girls Triple Jump and Eniola (10 Alpha) in the U17 Girls High Jump.

On Wednesday 18 June, our Year 7 to 10 athletes took part in the District Athletics Championships. Our Year 10 girls finished 1st overall. We were also thrilled to have seven students crowned District Champions - a brilliant achievement! Two of those champions were also awarded Performance of the Day: Rio (7 Alpha) for her win in the 1500m with a personal best of five minutes and 15 seconds and Eniola for her high jump of 1.60 metres, which was a new district record.

Throughout the term, our U14 and U16 girls athletics teams have also been competing in the Hertfordshire County League. After six matches, the U14 team finished 3rd in Area A and the U16 team came 2nd - meaning both teams have qualified for the County League Final.

Following their outstanding performances this term, Aimee (9 Alpha), Tiffany and Tara have been selected to represent Hertfordshire at the English Schools Athletics Association Track and Field Championships in Birmingham.

Trips

Year 12 embrace Spanish life and language in Comillas

During half-term, 16 Year 12 Spanish students completed immersive work experience placements in Comillas, Cantabria. Throughout the week, they lived and worked in a rural, Spanish-only environment, gaining real-world language practice across diverse roles.

The students embraced the experience wholeheartedly, developing fluency, cultural awareness and confidence, highlighted by hosting a live radio interview. The trip was a transformative milestone in their Spanish studies, leaving lasting memories and deepened passion for the language and culture.

Mr Cuartero Simarro writes about the trip and how the students fared in their new working environments:

‘This type of experience offered students the invaluable opportunity to fully immerse themselves not only in Spanish culture, but particularly in the lifestyle of the north of

Spain, known for its more rural atmosphere and where, it could be said, English-speaking residents are few and far between. This meant students found themselves in a truly immersive context where Spanish was the only language of communication, whether with local people or with the teachers accompanying them.

The placements included a wide variety of settings: hotel reception and housekeeping, restaurants, souvenir shops, research in a delicatessen, cafés, pharmacies, a radio station, a state school and a private school. Each student had previously chosen their own

placement based on their personal interests: some selected restaurants to interact with locals and learn about daily life, others opted for hotel kitchens to discover traditional Spanish dishes and some chose pharmacies to gain technical and useful vocabulary for future careers in science or medicine.

Our students took on these roles with great enthusiasm. Below is the list of who took part in the programme, along with their chosen placements:

This meant students found themselves in a truly immersive context where Spanish was the only language of communication, whether with local people or with the teachers accompanying them.

It was inspiring to see how quickly the students embraced the experience, speaking Spanish among themselves as soon as they set foot in the airport in London, constantly asking questions to improve their fluency. They did an outstanding job and truly raised the bar through their hard work, dedication, kindness and genuine passion for all things Spanish. Their confident and spontaneous use of the subjunctive left more than a few jaws on the floor!’

Sixth formers visit the Old Bailey

18 Sixth Form students, joined by Mr Walters and Mr Dinu, stepped into the heart of the British justice system with a visit to the Old Bailey, which is the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales.

Mr Walters shares his experience of the day and what our Sixth Formers took away from their visit:

‘We sat in the public galleries of court, observing attentively as the judge and barristers discussed the specifics of the case. We were struck by the strict security rules upon entry to the building, the intense scrutiny with which the judges questioned the barristers and

the specialised language used in court (e.g. ‘I would submit, my Lord, that…’). It was humbling, informative and most thought-provoking.

Then we went to Gray’s Inn Chambers. This is one of the Inns of Court – the historic societies that educate and train barristers in England and Wales. We had a private tour around the building, including the beautiful library, conference room and facilities for studying. Our students also received plenty of useful tips from our guide on how to successfully apply to become a barrister during and after university.

Finally, we had a tour around the cathedral-like Royal Courts of Justice (RCJ), expertly guided by a barrister. Students asked pertinent questions about the

history of the RCJ, as well as its present-day function.

Whilst not all students on the trip intend to study Law at university, many plan to complete a Law conversion after their undergraduate degrees. Students therefore appreciated this insight into what their professional future lives might involve.

The experience brought the drama and discipline of the legal system vividly to life. It was a rare chance to see justice in action at one of the most renowned courts in the world. An inspiring day for all!

In remembrance: a trip to the battlefields and war poetry brought to life

A group of Year 9 students set off for a three-day residential trip to explore the First World War battlefields. Travelling by coach and ferry, the group visited significant memorial sites such as Thiepval and Vimy Ridge, along with Commonwealth War Graves cemeteries including Arras and Lijssenthoek.

Year 7 take a historic tour to St Albans

Year 7 enjoyed an enriching afternoon at the Verulamium Museum and St Albans Abbey, learning about life in a Roman British town and about the Roman Christian martyr St Alban.

One of the most memorable moments of the trip was taking part in the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate. The students also had the poignant opportunity to visit the grave of a family member of one of their peers. Throughout the visit, their classroom learning came vividly to life, supported by the English department’s exploration of war poetry.

The trip concluded with a visit to a Belgian chocolate shop, an added highlight to a deeply enriching experience that left a lasting impression on the group.

Meanwhile, another group of Year 9 students remained at Habs, where they explored the theme of war through art and technology. Students wrote and recorded their own war poetry in the school’s podcast booth, based in the Innovation Centre. With guidance from Director of Innovation, Mrs Jarmy, they used AI tools to create visual interpretations of their poems. The resulting videos were powerful and emotive, serving as creative tributes to the challenges and sacrifices of war.

Students enjoyed handling two-thousand-year-old objects, ranging from everyday items to building materials. At the Abbey, students stepped into the past, impersonating pilgrims making their journey to the shrine, or taking on the role of monks with various responsibilities.

Habs students visit Düsseldorf for Work Experience Exchange

Earlier this year, Sixth Form students

Arina (L6 CS), Ruby (L6 HR), Sophie (L6 MO), Alexander (SFJ3), Frederick (SFJ1) Mark (SFM3), Theodore (SFM1) and Tom (SFJ3), had the pleasure of hosting their German peers in London for the highly anticipated Work Experience Exchange Programme. This marked the 21st year of this initiative, which pairs Habs students with German peers for a unique cultural and professional exchange.

The students worked at renowned institutions such as Harrow Crown Court, The House of Commons, Covington and Burlington LLP, Iwoca (a fintech firm) and Burrel Foley Fischer (an architecture firm).

During their stay, the exchange students toured Habs, attended lessons, met with Mr Sykes and enjoyed a social event involving students from both schools.

Pictured to the right of Mr Sykes is Mr Hüttermann, who has run the exchange for 21 years. Mr Hüttermann also worked as a German Assistant at Habs in the 1990s!

For the return leg of the programme, nine Year 12 students travelled to Düsseldorf, Germany. Habs students were placed in a variety of professional environments that matched their interests, ranging from the city archives, property investment, credit management and even the local Magistrate’s Court. Their employers unanimously gave outstanding feedback, praising the students for their engagement, proficiency in the German language and eagerness to learn.

Outside of their work placements, the students embraced the cultural aspect of the exchange. They spent a day exploring Cologne, Germany’s fourth-largest city, under sunny skies. A guided tour of the old town was followed by an exciting ‘Stadtrallye’ experience, where the students worked together with their exchange partners to solve clues and complete challenges around the city, further strengthening their teamwork and problemsolving skills.

On their final day, they visited Mataré Gymnasium, Habs’ partner school in Düsseldorf, where students attended lessons alongside their exchange partners. This unique opportunity allowed the students to immerse themselves in the German education system and connect with their peers in an academic setting.

The Habs’ students were sad to leave Germany and their exchange partners and many plan to meet up again in the future. By living in host families, as well as working with a German-speaking environment throughout the

week, the students improved their language skills, self-confidence and understanding of German culture. They returned home feeling more than ever like global citizens. We are proud of how professionally our students conducted themselves throughout, and they have demonstrated our school value of community.

The success of the programme would not have been possible without the invaluable support of Mr Walters, Mr Ahmet and Ms Webber, who accompanied the students on their trip and ensured everything ran smoothly.

The Work Experience Exchange Programme continues to provide Habs students with invaluable opportunities to develop their skills, enhance their understanding of the world and build a lasting international community.

Year 6 Adventures at PGL Osmington Bay!

Year 6 recently embarked on an unforgettable fiveday residential trip to PGL Osmington Bay, from 12 to 16 May. It was a week packed with thrilling adventures and fantastic memories!

The girls bravely tackled activities such as the Giant Swing, the highspeed Zipwire and the challenging Vertical Challenge, pushing their limits and building incredible teamwork. Evenings were just as exciting, filled with a variety of engaging activities, culminating in a lively disco that had everyone on their feet.

It was a truly enriching experience that fostered independence, resilience and camaraderie amongst our Year 6 pupils, leaving them with stories to tell for years to come!

Year 10 visit the Globe Theatre for The Crucible

Our Year 10 GCSE Drama students enjoyed a memorable visit to Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre to watch a powerful performance of Arthur Miller’s The Crucible. This experience directly supports their studies, helping them explore live performance in a meaningful and engaging way.

The production, directed by Ola Ince, brought the 17th-century Salem witch trials vividly to life in the unique setting of the Globe. From the moment students entered the open-air theatre, the immersive atmosphere, complete with roaming actors and period-accurate staging, set the tone for a compelling and intense experience. The strippedback set and emotionally charged performances drew students deep into the world of the play, highlighting the fear, hysteria and moral complexity at its core.

For many, seeing The Crucible performed live made the text more accessible and impactful. The staging choices, use of space and actor-audience interaction helped students understand how theatre communicates ideas beyond the written word - skills vital for their written and practical assessments. Back at school, students reflected thoughtfully on the performance, discussing characterisation, directorial decisions and the relevance of the play’s themes today. It was a valuable trip that not only enriched their understanding of live theatre but also sparked fresh enthusiasm for the subject.

Year 4 travel to the Victoria era

Year 4 pupils had the incredible opportunity to travel back in time during a visit to The British Schools Museum in Hitchin. As part of their history topic on the Victorians, the pupils experienced what life was like for children in a real Victorian classroom.

Led by a stern but entertaining Victorian schoolmistress, the children sat in rows at wooden desks, used slate pencils and chalkboards as well as ink pens to practise handwriting in copperplate style. They also took part in a traditional classroom drill, moving in unison to commands, something that was once a daily part of Victorian school life!

The visit also included a tour of the Headmaster’s House, once home to Mr Fitch, who was in charge of the school during the 1800s. The children explored the beautifully preserved rooms and discovered how a professional Victorian family would have lived. From the parlour and dining room to the scullery and water closet, every space offered a fascinating glimpse into Victorian domestic life.

Another exciting part of the day was seeing a special exhibition of books that once belonged to the Queen Mother. This rare collection gave pupils the chance to see what kinds of stories and learning materials were valued in the past.

It was a fun, hands-on and informative day that really brought the learning to life. Year 4 came away full of stories, questions and a much deeper understanding of what it was like to live and learn in Victorian times. A huge thank you to the museum staff for making the journey into the past so memorable!

Eid in the Bourne

The Habs Boys Parents’ Guild hosted a truly memorable evening at the Habs Community Eid Celebration on Saturday 14 June. The event brought together students, families and staff for a vibrant evening of unity, joy and cultural celebration.

Highlights of the evening included heartfelt student performances, a beautiful call to prayer (adhaan) and a delicious variety of Lebanese food. Families enjoyed a festive atmosphere filled with games, henna, quiz prizes and engaging activities for all ages.

The event was a wonderful opportunity to honour the spirit of Eid al-Adha, fostering community bonds and celebrating our school’s rich diversity.

Mencap Funday – Sunday 22 June 2025

Mencap Funday is one of the highlights of the Habs’ calendar. Held on Sunday 22 June, this much-loved annual event brought the very best of Habs’ spirit to host an unforgettable day for SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities) children from across the local community.

Organised by a student-led committee, the day was powered by over 170 student volunteers from Habs Girls and Habs Boys and 30 dedicated teachers, ensuring that every detail was in place to make this Funday a magical experience.

Special thanks go to this year’s incredible Chairs, Neeva (L6 BM) and Sam (L6H3), as well as staff leads Mrs Pfeffer and Ms Durmus, for overseeing every moment with enthusiasm, warmth and dedication. Throughout the day, 70 SEND children were paired with Habs’ student buddies and given the opportunity to take part in a variety of fun and engaging activities. And what a list of highlights there were!

From the moment guests arrived, the school was buzzing with excitement. In the Quad, children enjoyed Mad Scientist experiments and a petting zoo with rabbits, a pony and chickens. Inside the Taylor, the sensory rooms offered quiet activities like fidget toys, playdough and colouring. Bouncy castles and inflatable darts brought plenty of energy. No Mencap Funday would be complete without some sugar –and the ice cream truck and candy

floss machine did not disappoint, fuelling children, volunteers and teachers for the delightful day. Children loved face painting, IT activities led by Mr Franks and playing instruments like drums and glockenspiels in the music rooms. The magician was a crowd favourite, impressing everyone with fun tricks. Every part of the day offered something exciting and memorable.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the incredible efforts of the Mencap Committee throughout the year.

A big part of the fundraising came from two popular events: the evercompetitive Girls vs Boys Netball Match, which raised £1,100 and the dazzling Mencap’s Got Talent (MGT) showcase, which wowed audiences and raised a massive £4,800 through tickets and treat sales –including, of course, Krispy Kreme doughnuts, a Habs’ student favourite!

A final thank you to everyone –students, teachers, parents and donors – who made this day possible. Your time, effort and generosity created a world of magic for children who truly deserve it.

Habs Elstree Schools’ Summer Fair 2025

Sunday 6 July saw the second ever joint Schools’ Summer Fair hosted by the Habs Girls Parents’ Guild. The weather was cooler than it has been, which was a wonderful welcome after the scorching heat, as around 1,000 people enjoyed the activities, stalls and the variety of food on offer.

Parents were able to relax and enjoy as children with special wristbands had unlimited use of all the activities and games stalls. Many children made the most of the face painting and glitter bar. The event could not have gone ahead without the brilliant student and parent volunteers, it is always great to see the Habs community coming together and there were lots of happy children as a result. Proceeds raised will be donated to purchase equipment to enrich the students’ time at Habs, to the partnership programme and to the bursary fund.

It was a wonderful, relaxed community event bringing together all parts of the school.

Old Haberdashers Day

– Sunday 8 June

This year’s Old Haberdashers Day was a fantastic celebration of community and connection, bringing together nearly 400 alumni, former staff and current staff, many of whom brought family members.

From alumni in their 90s to the Class of 2024, guests enjoyed a lively day filled with year group reunions, food, archive displays, school tours and more.

Special receptions were held for those celebrating five, 10 and 25 years since graduation, while those marking 50 years gathered for a sitdown lunch. Former staff from Habs Girls were treated to a celebratory breakfast in honour of the school’s 150th anniversary.

Despite a rainy lead-up, the sun shone brightly on the day, making for a truly memorable occasion.
