Habs
Weekly

Head of Junior School’s message

We were very fortunate to welcome Artist in Residence Darcy Turner, to Habs this week, who ran a Willow Workshop for the Year 6 students, and we are excited for his return next week to run a session for Year 5 students. Art is such an important part of the curriculum at Habs, and I believe that it is a great opportunity for the girls to express themselves. Whether it be through painting or willow making, we are grateful to Miss Galvin whose constant encouragement allows the girls to achieve their best in the Art Studio.

Here are some of the willow structures that have been created, and I am looking forward to seeing them in their new home in the Junior School playground.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend.

What’s going on inArt this week?

On Monday, 3A were exploring Roman Art by adding grout to mosaics to make beautiful mosaictrimmed mirrors.

Year 2 have been preparing for their sandwich making activity next week and have been focussing on hygiene, equipment and safe methods of cutting, by using the bridge hold, to cut cucumbers safely. Year 2 have also finished creating and sewing stuffed sea creatures.

The Art Studio is kept busy during lunchtime with some Year 3 and Year 4 students at Crafty Creators Club.

Year 4 have been using Brushes Redux to create a wallpaper design for their torch covers, as well as painting some well-known brands.

What’s going on inArt this week?

Four Year 6 students have worked as part of a mixed Year 6 and Year 7 academic enrichment group to build nest houses. The opportunity to work in the senior school DT workshop and use a wide range of tools and equipment for joining wood has been a great transition experience for the Junior School students.

Year 5 have had a food technology focus in DT this half of term. They have designed and made their own pasta dishes and also researched famous chefs, putting the information together in these fabulous posters.

Some behind the scenes photos of the Year 6 students building their beautiful willow structures.

Book Drive for the Children’s Book Project charity

MONDAY 10 JUNE TO FRIDAY 14 JUNE

We are holding a Book Drive for the Children’s Book Project charity. Please donate any books which your children have grown out of so that they can find new homes with others. Pupils in both the Junior and Senior Schools are invited to donate any books suitable for children aged 0-14 which are in good condition or alternatively you may wish to purchase an old favourite to donate. There will be places for the pupils to drop the books off at the front of school in the morning dropoff time and around both school sites during the day.

About the Children’s Book Project Across London and the UK 1 in 4 disadvantaged children owns fewer than 10 books, whilst 1 in 8 has none at all. This has an impact not only on these children’s academic outcomes but also on their wellbeing, emotional development and sense of themselves as a reader.

The Children’s Book Project directly tackles this ‘book gap’ and gifts donated books to targeted communities across the Capital. Over 500 schools, community groups, women’s groups and prisons nationwide put on book gifting events at which children are invited to choose a book to take it home and keep. The charity expects to gift upwards of 350,000 books this year.

We are really excited to support this initiative, so we hope you will be able to support it by donating books that your children have enjoyed reading, ready to be loved and read by another child.

Parent Coffee Morning for Year 7 Joiners

FRIDAY 7 JUNE AT 8.45AM

With the transition to the Senior School on the horizon, we understand that this can be an exciting yet anxious time for both students and parents alike. To assist in this transition process, we are delighted to invite you to an informal parent coffee morning on Friday 7 June.

The event will start at 8.45am, lasting around an hour, and we encourage all parents and guardians of students joining Habs Senior School in Year 7 to attend. The event is open both to parents of new joiners and Junior School parents, and we hope that it will provide valuable insights and support, as your children embark on this new chapter of their educational journey.

As part of the morning's program, you will have the opportunity to hear from current Year 7 and Year 8 students who have already experienced the transition into Senior School. They will be sharing their first-hand experiences, offering invaluable advice, and answering any questions you may have. Our current students will provide a glimpse into the daily life of a Senior School student and offer practical tips on how to support your child during this transition period. Following the presentation, over coffee, parents will have the opportunity to engage with current Senior School students from a range of year groups, allowing you to gain further insights and perspectives. You will also be able to meet with other parents with children joining in September, as well as parents from within our existing parent community.

We sincerely hope that you will be able to join us for this event. Please could you indicate on the Microsoft Form here by Friday 31 May, if you would like to attend. We look forward to seeing many of you at the parent coffee morning and working together to support your child’s transition into the Senior School.

YEAR 6 INFORMATION

Year 6 Production – ‘Mary Poppins Jr.’

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

We are well underway with our rehearsals for our Year 6 production of Disney’s ‘Mary Poppins Jr.’ It is important all pupils have read the whole script, so that they understand the storyline and the characters, and how their role fits into the production. The music in Mary Poppins can be challenging, and listening to the songs at home will help them to become familiar with it, to enable them to get the most out of our rehearsals.

The songs can be accessed via this link.
