PARENTAL Q&A

At The Shared Learning Trust Sixth Form we realise that parents, guardians and carers play a very important part in our students success.

What happens in a sixth form interview?

A sixth form interview is a short meeting with someone from your prospective sixth form which gives them the chance to find out more about you, and gives you to the opportunity to ask questions and learn more about the intended subjects you would like to study.

Will I be provided any financial support during sixth form?

We offer financial support in the form of a Bursary that students can apply for during their time within the sixth form, students are supported on an individual basis.

How will I go between different sixth form sites?

We offer a free minibus service that takes students across in the morning, lunch time and after school.

What will I wear in the sixth form?

We have a smart dress code policy for all students, sixth form students must remember that they are role models for young students and are seen by the school as working adults.

How can I keep up to date with my child’s progress?

We feel students perform better when their parents take an active role in their education. The sixth form hold parental consultation evenings and issues student progress reports. You will also liaise closely with sixth form Heads of Year throughout your student’s journey within our sixth form.

“Students in the sixth form can study a wide range of mostly academic qualifications. Sixth-form students, are extremely well prepared for future study or employment.”

SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE

Your tutor will follow you through your two years of the sixth form and will take a holistic view of your education. They will track your progress carefully and will write your reference for any university or job applications. It is, therefore, important that the relationship you build with them is a positive one. During morning tutorial time, you will have the opportunity for class discussions on topics such as current affairs, student finance, post-18 options, taking part in Vespa programmes and exam preparation. You will also have regular 1:1 tutorials with your tutor which is a great opportunity to perhaps to talk through a recent report, your university application or to discuss your progress in lessons.

As a school based sixth form, we are much better placed to ensure you have the skills you need for success in the workplace and can personalise these around your needs and aspirations. We encourage all our students to undertake leadership development work - a key skill sought by employers. At The Shared Learning Trust, you will have numerous opportunities to do this, whether it is through our paid employment opportunities, volunteering with clubs or in lessons, organising events as a member of the student leadership team.

TO THE SHARED LEARNING TRUST

As the Chief Executive of The Shared Learning Trust, I am incredibly proud to lead a team of passionate, dedicated and talented staff. The structure of our trust means that we can be with a child at each stage of their educational journey, from the age of 2 to 18.

We ensure the transition between each phase of a child’s education is smooth and seamless. Our ultimate goal is to develop well-rounded young people who will make the most of the opportunities open to them. We will help our students to develop resilience and a passion for life and learning. They will become highly employable; playing a key part in their communities and proud to say they came through one of our academies.

We will do all we can to make sure every child reaches their full potential. No child will be left behind as all have the capacity to achieve beyond their wildest dreams. We teach that hard work, effort and application really does pay off and leads to self- respect, self-esteem, self-belief and success.

Strive, achieve, believe! Our vision is very much at the heart of everything we do.

“The sixth form has helped to advance me in my studies. The resources they provide allow me to take a lead on my own learning.”
