Junction Housing

The design aims to create an adaptable building for subsidized family and single housing. Based on site analysis and research where most of the local population reported earning under the city’s median income, Junction Housing is intended to offer comfortable living spaces for young parents through subsidized units. To foster a sense of community and support a co-living lifestyle, the building is separated in two masses, connected by a large “glass box” in the middle, which allows both the subsidized and apartment housing to be connected, allowing those in the subsidized housing to feel as though they are part of a larger community, not excluded.

The standard family unit above is designed to maximise natural daylight and heating while minimizing reliance on HVAC systems to combat winter’s cold. By incorporating high-efficiency appliances and an ERV (Energy Recovery Ventilation) system, the design not only conserves energy in heating and cooling but also reduces energy bills and improves indoor air quality. The proposed site features a small brick house from the early 1960s, currently operating as a restaurant. Since this is one of the few remaining original homes on the now-commercialized street, the new complex is designed to wrap around the existing building. Rather than demolishing it, the design integrates the restaurant’s outdoor space with the new complex’s patio area.

Inhabitable Wall

This project is a retelling of the indigenous Ojibwe legend of “How the Birch Tree got its Burns”. By casting concrete with local birch bark, we were able to create natural imprints and cutouts within the slab of concrete. The birch bark effectively molded the wall, integrating into its structure in a manner reminiscent of how Indigenous culture is interwoven with contemporary life. Our interpretation includes a family playing in this “Inhabitable Wall” as if they are Wanaboozhoo, the legend in the story, hiding from the Thunderbird.

The objective of this project was to design and construct a structure to be installed along a local skating path. The conceptual inspiration for this design was drawn from the form and function of a sponge (éponge), which provided insights into creating curvilinear shapes while ensuring a comfortable seating experience for users. This led to the development of a 2x2 stud framework, which was installed on a frozen lake during the winter months, offering a unique and functional amenity for the community.

The ice structures are crafted from recycled wood—2x2s, 2x4s, and 2x6s sourced from construction sites and depots around the city. Designed for community use, whether for resting, putting on skates, or simply enjoying the view, we aimed for the wooden structure to comfortably fit people’s bodies. To achieve this, we considered various bends and curves the ice structure could take, and together, we decided on an asymmetric, curvilinear shape that complements both form and function.

04 Downtown

This was an in depth analysis of the housing typologies found around the Downtown Sudbury area.

To the right are drawings contributed showcasing the various textures, shapes and livelihoods of the selected “rough” neighbourhoods in Downtown Sudbury. The analysis was done through walking, observing, drawing & speculating in the proposed sites.

05 Rain House

This was the first studio subject for the Masters of Architecture course at the University of Sydney. The brief was to Design a “Huge House” intended to house 300 Aboriginal students of the University. The most important aspects of the design were developed with ideas surrounding building with country. Rainhouse draws inspiration from water, a significant ancestor of Gadigal land. It’s roof structure is an expression of how the building catches water and dispells it to the ground; a landscape dotted with Cadi, meaning grass tree. The water path is visible with sound and sight, from catchment to disposal.

ELEVATION 1/250

TYPICAL PLAN1/250

The typical floor plate is organised by 3 main blocks consisting of 2 slightly differing typologies. It steps down the site, resting on a podium that covers the ground floor, and uses axial shifts to define the communal spaces for each level. The corridor is imagined as a highly active and vibrant collective terrace that connects to the shared spaces of units. The blocks alternate along the corridor, which give these zones a different feel. Cross throughs for light and sight are achieved to break the facade and enhance natural ventilation, The corridors become an open ‘breezeway’ making it a suitable space for dwelling and contemplation. A rigid form with moments of relaxation.
