resident Dr Irfaan Ali in his New Year’s message to the nation reflected on Guyana’s transformational progress and looked towards a prosperous future for all Guyanese as he hailed national development, prosperity, and unity.

“As the first light of 2026 rises over our rivers and plains, I invite you to pause, just for a moment, and reflect on how far we have come.

Guyana’s story is no longer written in the language of potential alone. It is now written in the language of progress made real, of opportunity seized, of a nation stepping confidently into its moment.

We are not merely turning a page; we are writing a new chapter in our history. And its opening lines are bold,” he declared.

The President noted that despite global uncertainty and the Essequibo situation, over the year, Guyanese remained united as the economy, their daily lives and future security improved with the development of education and health care; increased incomes and opportunities, and safer streets.

He underscored that the 2025 opening of the modern Bharrat Jagdeo Demerara River Bridge “is a symbol of this new Guyana. It is a symbol of the transformation that is taking place”, adding that the year’s regional and general elections reaffirmed the will of the people for the Government’s mandate “to continue the work of inclusive growth, shared prosperity, national transformation, and unity”.

Looking to the new year, President Ali expressed confidence in continuing economic growth, but emphasised that it would lead to a focus on personal and community improvements, with increased disposable income, more housing development, and better infrastructure among other developments – many already in place.

“In 2026, we anticipate continued strong economic growth, but our focus is deeper than numbers...This year, national prosperity will translate more directly into personal and community advancement,” he stated.

The Guyanese leader also focused on young people, expressing his commitment to ensuring they play a vital role in Guyana’s future.

In a more personal commitment, the President made a pledge to all Guyanese “to govern with integrity, discipline, and compassion. To listen before I decide, to act with fairness, and to place the national interest above all else.

I pledge to guard our resources carefully, to expand opportunity relentlessly, and to ensure that development reaches every region and every community. I pledge to defend our sovereignty, protect our people, and uphold the

President Dr Irfaan Ali peaceful resolution of all matters in accordance with international law while working every day to unite, not divide, our nation. I will hold myself to that pledge, as my commitment to you, the beautiful people of Guyana,” he said.

He made it clear that while Guyana was developing, the country would remain alert and aware of the tensions and issues going on globally.

“As we move forward, optimism must be matched with vigilance. The world remains unsettled, and tensions beyond our borders can test even strong nations. We will, therefore, remain prudent, prepared, and alert, protecting our homeland, supporting our security services, and preserving peace through diplomacy, readiness, partnership with our allies and national unity,” he added.

He, however, assured that Guyanese have the strength and will to move forward into their future, urging them to look towards a progressive

2026.

“With faith in each other and confidence in our direction, there is no summit beyond our reach.

Onward, upward – together to a brighter, stronger, and more prosperous 2026,” he urged.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister, Brigadier (Retired) Mark Phillips, in his New Year’s message, called for a collective renewal of commitment to foster national unity and prosperity. He said that as one year closes and another begins, this presents the opportunity to reflect and take stock of the year that has passed.

According to the Prime Minister, the arrival of the new year symbolises renewal and invites resolve and responsibility.

“As with all countries and in every individual’s life, the year behind us tested us in different ways, demanding resilience and maturity as a nation. Yet, through challenges, both seen and unseen, Guyana continued to move forward – our people continued to move forward.”

PM Phillips noted that across Guyana, progress has taken many forms, with roads built, schools strengthened, health care expanded, and communities supported – an achievement driven by workers who showed up every day, families who believed in education and discipline, entrepreneurs who invested locally and citizens who understood that nation-building is a shared responsibility.

In the same breath, he also acknowledged that growth did

not erase hardship, as global uncertainty and social pressures affected many households. But despite all this, PM Phillips reminded that progress was measured by how well the Government protected and took care of citizens during moments of strain.

“This understanding will continue to guide our priorities,” the Prime Minister said, adding that while economic growth created new possibilities, it also placed a clear obligation – to continue managing the country’s resources wisely and to ensure that development serves every Guyanese today and in generations to come.

“As we enter the new year, we aim to deepen the gains we have made, to correct where we must, and to remain anchored in the values that define us: fairness, unity, and respect. The future of Guyana rests in our people and our willingness to work together, to hold each other accountable, and to believe that progress must include everyone.”

“So, may this new year be one of purpose and a year marked by discipline, compassion, and national pride. Let us face the months ahead with confidence, grounded in what we have overcome and focused on what still lies before us. On behalf of the Government of Guyana, I extend best wishes for a new year filled with health, stability, and opportunity. May 2026 strengthen our resolve and renew our commitment to building a Guyana that is just, secure, and united. Happy New Year, and may God continue to bless our nation,” PM Phillips stated.

uyana steps into the promise of 2026 as the nation stands at a pivotal juncture; one that demands reflection on achievements, acknowledgement of challenges, and a resolute commitment to the values that underpin national development. The new year represents more than the passage of time; it is a symbolic call to responsibility, renewal, and purposeful action.

The past year has tested Guyana in numerous ways, presenting both visible and subtle challenges that required resilience, strategic foresight, and national unity. Yet, despite global uncertainties, social pressures, and the inevitable strains of rapid transformation, progress has remained tangible. Infrastructure projects have expanded connectivity, schools have been strengthened, healthcare services broadened, and communities supported. The economy, buoyed by significant investment and diversification efforts, has generated new opportunities. These gains, however, are accompanied by a clear imperative: that development be managed responsibly and inclusively, ensuring that prosperity extends to every citizen today and is preserved for future generations.

Central to these achievements are the efforts of the nation’s workforce, families committed to education and discipline, entrepreneurs investing locally, and citizens embracing the shared responsibility of nation-building. Such contributions highlight a fundamental truth: the success of the country is not solely determined by policy or resources but by the active engagement and determination of its people. PPP welcomes 2026 with a renewed mandate and hails record gains and accelerated transformation for Guyana

T

he People’s Progressive Party extends warm New Year’s greetings to all Guyanese at home and across the Diaspora as we welcome 2026 with renewed faith, hope, and confidence in our collective future.

This new year dawns at a moment of significance for our country and our party. Having been entrusted with a renewed mandate by the people of Guyana, we enter 2026 humbled by that confidence and resolute in our responsibility to continue delivering results that tangibly improve lives.

Over the past five years, Guyana has emerged as a model state on the international stage – respected for principled leadership, sound economic management, and responsible stewardship of its natural resources.

Our record speaks clearly. Through the Low Carbon Development Strategy 2030, Guyana has assumed global thought leadership on energy and climate security while preserving its

environmental integrity.

We have positioned our nation as a regional leader in food production, delivering record achievements in rice and advancing diversification across key agricultural crops. Domestically, we have focused relentlessly on empowering citizens – reversing over 200 taxes and fees, creating thousands of jobs, increasing disposable incomes, restoring benefits to workers and pensioners, and ensuring that no new taxes were introduced between 2020 and 2025.

Our investments in people have transformed opportunity. Education has been made free at the University of Guyana, student loans written off, CSEC examination fees covered, and tens of thousands trained through initiatives such as GOAL. Health and education infrastructure continue to expand to world-class standards. Home ownership has been advanced at an unprecedented scale, with more than 50,000 house lots distributed in five years – bringing secu-

rity and dignity to families nationwide.

As we look ahead, 2026 marks the acceleration of Guyana’s transformation. The coming year will see the commencement of 40,000 new homes, continued free education at all levels, expanded agricultural production with co-investment opportunities, and increased access to financing and support for small businesses through the Guyana Development Bank. Cleaner, cheaper, and more reliable energy will come on stream with the Gas-to-Energy project and major grid upgrades, complemented by renewable energy projects that reinforce Guyana’s global environmental credentials.

Equally important, 2026 will deepen reforms that make Government more efficient, transparent, and people-centred. The digitisation of public services and the expansion of citizen-focused platforms will improve access, reduce inefficiency, and strengthen accountability. We will also intensify efforts to address

social challenges – including gambling, drug abuse, and gender-based violence – through education, prevention, and community-based interventions that strengthen social cohesion and public order.

Guided by the commitments outlined in our 2025-2030 manifesto, the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic Administration remains steadfast in its mission to build a Guyana that delivers for all.

Once again, we extend New Year’s greetings to all Guyanese at home and abroad and express our deepest appreciation to our hard-working educators, healthcare professionals, members of the disciplined services, and all other public and private sector workers whose dedication, sacrifice, and professionalism sustain our nation every day. As we enter 2026 together, may this new year bring continued opportunity, unity, and shared prosperity for every family and every community across our beloved Guyana.

Guyana’s global standing enhanced with service on UNSC …as country concludes successful 2-year tenure

G

uyana has concluded its two-year term as an elected member of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) – a position that has earned the country global acclaim.

This is according to a statement from the Office of the President in Georgetown on Wednesday.

During Guyana’s tenure, which began on January 1, 2024, and was guided by the overarching theme of “Partnering for Peace and Prosperity”, Guyana’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, sat before the UNSC. “Guyana’s service on the Security Council has brought immense acclaim and enhanced the country’s standing on the global stage,” the Office of the President stated in the missive.

According to the Government, Guyana’s tenure on the Council coincided with a period of profound global and regional upheaval, including the war in Ukraine; the conflict in Gaza; violence in Sudan; the spread of terrorism and violent extremism across the Sahel; the Taliban’s intensified repression of women’s rights in Afghanistan; and the protracted conflict in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Moreover, the Security Council also confronted severe humanitarian and political crises in Haiti, Syria, Yemen, and Myanmar,

alongside emerging developments in the Caribbean Sea. In 2025, renewed tensions between India and Pakistan, as well as between Cambodia and Thailand, further strained international security.

The Council also faced difficult decisions on financing African Union–led peace operations while also addressing worsening food insecurity in conflict-affected regions. Its agenda included issues such as cyber security, artificial intelligence, the safety and security of humanitarian and UN personnel, the future of multilateralism, and peacekeeping reform.

The Office of the President noted, “These matters were deliberated on amid deep geopolitical divisions among the permanent members, which often hindered the achievement of consensus.”

During its tenure, Guyana presided over the Security Council in February 2024 and again in June 2025. Under Guyana’s presidency, two signature events focused on “The Impact of Climate Change and Food Insecurity on the Maintenance of International Peace and Security” (February 2024) and “Poverty, Underdevelopment, and Conflict: Implications for International Peace and Security” (June 2025).

Guyana also played a notable role in advancing the Women, Peace, and Security Agenda, the Climate Peace

and Security Agenda, the Youth Peace and Security Agenda, and the Children and Armed Conflict file.

It worked closely with Switzerland and Slovenia to draw attention to conflict-induced food insecurity as an informal co-focal point on conflict and hunger.

Also, during its tenure on the Security Council, Guyana pursued an active and collaborative approach, working closely with elected members and regional partners to advance inclusive, principled, and pragmatic responses to international peace and security challenges.

Among the key actions and contributions during Guyana’s tenure was the A3+ Collaboration.

Guyana worked closely with the African members of the Council – Algeria, Mozambique, and Sierra Leone in 2024, and Algeria, Sierra Leone, and Somalia in 2025 – under the A3+ Mechanism. Together, the A3+ partners co-authored resolutions, Presidential Statements, and press statements on situations including Sudan, Libya, Benin, and the Guyana–Venezuela controversy.

Engagement with Elected Members (E10) was another achievement during its term. Guyana coordinated with the 10 elected members to advocate for ceasefires and expanded humanitarian access in Gaza, including the co-authorship of several resolutions addressing the situation.

Further, Guyana co-authored with Sierra Leone a landmark resolution on Youth, Peace and Security aimed at strengthening the mainstreaming of youth across the peace and security agenda. The resolution calls, inter alia, for enhanced youth participation and leadership in peace processes, conflict prevention, peace-building, recovery, and reconstruction at all levels, and was unanimously adopted by the Council on December 12, 2025.

Guyana also chaired the Security Council Sanctions Committees on Haiti and Guinea-Bissau and served as Vice Chair of the Committees concerning Afghanistan and the Central African Republic. It also actively contributed to the work of other subsidiary bodies.

Similarly, Guyana helped to organise and lead several high-level briefings, debates, and expert engagements, including a Security Council mission to Colombia in February 2024 and an informal expert field mission to Chad in December 2025. Guyana also convened the annual open debate on Children and Armed Conflict.

Moreover, Guyana served as coordinator for the E10 group (October 2024 and October 2025), the A3+ group (January–March 2025), and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Caucus in the Security Council. In this capacity, Guyana worked closely with the Caribbean

Non-compliant miners to face land repossession …as Govt targets idle gold mining lands

T

he Government will begin repossessing gold mining lands where operators are found to be non-compliant, making false declarations or recording little to no production, President Dr Irfaan Ali has announced.

The President made the disclosure during a live interview on Tuesday, warning that strong action will be taken against miners and traders who benefit from state incentives but fail to meet their legal and environmental obligations.

President Ali said the mining sector was in a severely-weakened state when the People’s Progressive Party/Civic Government returned to office, prompting the Administration to introduce hundreds of billions of dollars in incentives to re-

vive the industry. These included duty-free concessions on fuel, machinery and equipment, as well as tax incentives, which miners continue to enjoy despite global gold prices rising to more than US$4000 per ounce.

“The mining sector almost went dead when we came back into office.

Hundreds of billions of dollars in incentive they still benefit from, although the gold prices went up to more than four thousand dollars (US) an ounce. They still have the incentive on fuel,” the President said, noting that the measures directly benefited the wider population by stabilising the sector and preserving jobs.

However, Ali stressed that the Government is now taking a firm stance on declaration and compliance is-

sues within the industry.

He warned that miners who purchase mercury using declared production figures but fail to properly declare gold output will face scrutiny. Lands that are registered but show no production or declarations will be repossessed.

“That is why we’re taking the declarations issue very seriously, and we’re going to the mercury they buy with their declarations. If they have land that they’re working on that gradually registered and there’s no declarations, we’re going to repossess those lands because no sense to destroy the environment and there is no production,” the Head of State said.

“There is no sense destroying the environment when there is no produc-

tion,” the President said, adding that miners have a duty to declare all gold produced and to sell through the Guyana Gold Board.

He announced that on January 5, a comprehensive assessment will be conducted on every miner and gold trader, following which decisive action will be taken.

The President made it clear that the Government wants full compliance across the sector and expects all gold to be properly declared and sold through the official channels.

The move forms part of broader efforts to strengthen accountability, protect the environment and ensure that national resources are managed responsibly, while maintaining support for legitimate and productive mining operations.

Community (Caricom) and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to elevate regional perspectives and priorities.

Guyana also collaborated with civil society organisations to facilitate briefings for Council members, enhancing understanding of on-the-ground realities in several conflict-affected situations.

During Guyana’s period of service, the Security Council adopted 90 resolutions, 15 Presidential Statements, 77 press statements, and 21 notes by the President, all of which were the subject of negotiation.

According to the Office of the President, “Throughout this time, Guyana was widely regarded as a principled and constructive actor, firmly committed to multilateralism, the United Nations Charter, and the rule of international law.”

The Government went on to laud the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Co-operation as well as

Guyana’s Mission to the United Nations and their counterpart – all of whom contributed to the country’s successful tenure on the Security Council over the past two years.

“Guyana also expresses deep appreciation to its international partners, whose cooperation, goodwill, and constructive engagement strengthened the country’s work on the Council.

Through these combined efforts, Guyana’s contributions on the Council remained consistently principled, effective, and widely respected. All of Guyana can take great pride in this collective achievement.”

“As this service concludes, Guyana takes this opportunity to reaffirm its commitment to the shared pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity, striving together with partners across regions, hemispheres, and the global community to build a more just, inclusive, and harmonious world,” the Guyanese Government stated.

Instructions 1.

Tie a knot in the end of a deflated balloon.

Cut off about 1/2 an inch from the very top part of the balloon and stretch the balloon over one end of a toilet paper roll.

Tape the edge of the balloon to the paper roll, securing it in place.

4.

Decide on base colour(s) for your popper and attach a paper strip around the top of the paper roll.

5.

Cut a piece of glitter paper to fit around the paper roll. (To fit the whole roll, without the black strip of paper, cut a piece 4-1/2 inches tall.)

6.

Attach the glitter paper around the roll, centring it vertically so the black of the balloon and the black strip of paper at the top show evenly.

7.

Use a star punch to cut out stars from black and silver glitter paper and attach them all the way around the covered paper roll.

Add about 2 tablespoons of confetti into the top of the paper roll.

7 Teaching Service Commission members sworn in with mandate to fill 2700 vacancies W

ith a focus on shaping careers, influencing professional standards and encouraging the delivery of quality education in schools, the Teaching Service Commission (TSC) was reconstituted on Wednesday with a mandate to fill some 2700 new positions created by the Government.

Doodmattie Singh, Shafiran Bhajan, Joan Davis-Monkhouse, Lancelot Baptiste, Satti Jaisieriisingh, Mayda Persaud, and Saddam Hussain were sworn in as members of the new TSC for the next three years.

Singh, a veteran Guyanese educator, was appointed as Chair of the seven-member Commission.

They took their oath of office before President Dr Irfaan Ali, who underscored his Government’s commitment to not just ensure improvements in the welfare, working environment and conditions of service for teachers, but also in giving them access to accelerated opportunities.

To this end, the Head of State charged the Commission to prioritise filling some 2700 vacancies, including several new senior positions that were created to foster a more qualitative delivery of holistic education and facilitate a faster upward mobility for teachers. This way, he explained, teachers no longer have to wait until the end, towards the end of their careers, to become headteachers.

According to President Ali, “The Minister of Education has advised me that a second deputy headteacher [position] in grades A and B secondary schools… was created, and 60 newly-created positions are in this category. A deputy headteacher in grade C primary and secondary schools created the opportunity for 101 newly-created positions for upward mobility.”

823 senior positions created

The Head of State pointed out that these 823 senior positions created within the Teaching Service structure will facilitate the advancement of teachers’ careers.

“These positions did not exist previously. This means more teachers will be promoted, and more teachers will be given the opportunity to be promoted. Promotion means higher salary, additional benefits, and of course, retiring at a higher level of pension,” he stated.

Article 209 (1) of the Constitution vests the Teaching Service Commission with “…the power to appoint persons as teachers in the Public Service and to remove and exercise disciplinary control over persons holding or acting in such offices.”

On this note, the Guyanese leader emphasised the importance of this independent constitutional body being free from direct political influence in order to safeguard professionalism and build confidence among teachers.

“So, this constitutional mandate is both broad and profound. It places in the hands of the members of the Commission decisions that shape careers… influence professional standards and directly affect the quality of education delivered in our schools.

Crucially, in the exercise of its function, the Teaching

Service Commission is not subject to political directives or control,” the President posited.

He went on to add that merit-based appointments and promotions lie at the heart of a credible and effective teaching service. Such an independent Commission, the Guyanese leader emphasised, encourages teachers to view teaching not merely as a job, but as a viable and rewarding career.

“It reassures them that their efforts, qualifications and dedication will be recognised and that they will not be unfairly disadvantaged or arbitrarily treated. Where teachers are confident that advancement depends on qualifications, performance and dedication, rather than connections or influence, professionalism flourishes.

Conversely, when merit is compromised, morals decline and the quality of education suffer.

“The Teaching Service Commission plays a decisive role in preventing such outcomes by acting as guardians of fairness and objectivity.

Equally important is the Commission’s responsibility for disciplinary control and dismissals. Discipline, when exercised without due process or fairness, can become a tool of injustice.

When exercised properly, it reinforces professional standards and public confidence. The Commission is, therefore, entrusted with ensuring that any disciplinary action is grounded

in clear procedures, consistency and respect for natural justice,” the Head of State noted.

To this end, President Ali reminded the newly sworn-in TSC members that they are assuming office at a time of profound transformation in Guyana’s education system.

As the country moves decisively towards universal secondary education, he noted that rapid progress is simultaneously being made to ensure that all teachers are properly trained and professionally equipped. Moreover, education is being modernised through the introduction of smart classrooms, while plans are also being rolled out for the increased use of digital technologies in teaching and learning, and schools are being equipped with better labs.

“The work of the Commission will play a piv-

otal role in supporting and sustaining the transformation of education. Your decisions will help shape a teaching workforce that is capable, motivated, disciplined, committed and confident, ensuring that the modernisation of education in Guyana is matched by a corresponding growth in professionalism and dedication among those entrusted to implement it. I therefore encourage you to undertake your duties with seriousness [and] be guided at all times by the principles of fairness and merit.

In doing so, you will honour the intent behind the establishment of the Teaching Service Commission and make a lasting contribution to the development of education and society in Guyana,” the President noted.

Guyana’s growth creating jobs, opportunities across all sectors – Finance Minister

S

enior Minister in the Office of the President with Responsibility for Finance, Dr Ashni Singh, on Wednesday said that Guyana’s sustained economic growth over recent years has translated into increased employment and economic opportunities across all sectors.

Speaking during an interview with the National Communications Network (NCN), Dr Singh reflected on his first term since returning as Finance Minister in 2020 and the performance of the economy under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration.

He said economic growth, while important, must lead to improved living standards for citizens. According to Singh, this objective has guided Government policy, with recent economic performance supporting that approach.

The Mid-Year Report for 2025 shows estimated overall real GDP growth of 7.5 per cent in the first half of the year, driven by a 13.8 per cent expansion in the non-oil economy. Dr Singh noted that since 2021, the economy has grown at an average rate of more than 10 per cent, including strong performance in non-oil sectors.

played a key role, with new companies entering the market and partnerships being formed between foreign and local firms across multiple sectors. This, he explained, has been accompanied by rapid growth in private sector credit, which he described as the fastest expansion in the country’s history over the past five years.

According to the Minister, these developments have resulted in higher levels of economic activity, job creation and income generation. He stated that approximately 60,000 additional people have been employed over the past five years.

Singh pointed to employment growth in oil and gas, tourism, hospitality and healthcare. He said thousands of jobs have been created in the energy sector, while new hotels, restaurants and related services have expanded opportunities in tourism. In healthcare, he noted the establishment of new hospitals and increased demand for doctors, nurses, technicians and other professionals.

He added that Government has been accelerating training efforts to meet labour demand, particularly in the healthcare sector, where private hospitals are also expanding.

The Minister also highlighted activity in the construction sector, noting that growth is being driven by both public and private investment. He said major public infrastructure projects under the Public Sector Investment Programme, along with private industrial and commercial developments, have contributed to changes in the country’s physical landscape.

The Minister added that the private construction has included factories, warehouses, processing plants and office buildings, while housing construction has expanded following the distribution of more than 50,000 house lots during the Government’s first term.

He explained that home construction has generated employment for skilled and unskilled workers, including carpenters, masons, plumbers, electricians and transport providers, contributing further to job creation across the economy.

In addition to higher employment levels, Dr Singh said Government policy has focused on improving job quality through investments in human capital. He noted continued spending on education, training, skills development and social services as part of efforts to support long-term improvements in living standards.

Your Eyewitness hopes that because of the public interest and importance of the case, matters gonna be concluded expeditiously before year-end. So that Sanction Man’s gonna be enjoying the hospitality of the US Government in federal facilities in the Sunshine State, Florida – decked out in his orange jumpsuit!!

Another sore is the GT Mayor’s intervention to contravene a court order which mandated the removal of vendors in front of a private business – Yhip’s Bakery.

These Mayoral interventions have been one of the major reasons for GT being transformed from the “Garden City” it had been for a hundred years and sinking into and remaining as a garbage city – all because of politics. In this case, your Eyewitness believes the Mayor ought to be held in contempt of the court and thrown into the clinker for a couple of weeks to meditate on his responsibilities to the good citizens of the city!!

He’d finished second to conservative candidate Nasry Asfura – who was backed by US President Trump and declared the winner on Christmas Eve – more than three weeks after the elections. With less than 1 per cent of votes separating the two candidates, according to the CNE – Honduras’ electoral authority – they’re gonna have to maybe follow us in a recount??

One interesting factoid is that both Nasralla and Asfura are of Syrian descent – in a country with a mere 0.3 per cent Arabs!!

The charges follow a CANU operation on Broad Street, Montrose, East Coast

Demerara. Acting on intelligence, officers intercepted a motor vehicle and discovered 27 brick-like parcels containing a total of 31.452 kg of cocaine. Moonilall, Adams, Laundry, and Lam were arrested and escorted to CANU Headquarters along with the seized narcotics.

Pensioner found stabbed Eruption on Agriculture Road to death at Ogle home; caused by pressure surge in GWI line husband in custody

P

olice are investigating the death of 89-year-old Lackandai Tamessar, a pensioner of Ogle Airstrip Road, whose body was discovered with apparent stab wounds at her residence.

The incident is believed to have occurred between Friday, December 26, and Tuesday, December 30.

According to reports,

Tamessar was last seen alive on December 26 by a relative who visited her home. When the relative returned on December 30, she was found lying motionless with injuries consistent with stabbing.

The body was taken to the Plaisance Health Centre, where a doctor pronounced her dead on arrival. It was subsequent-

ly transported to Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, where it awaits a post-mortem examination.

An 88-year-old man, identified as the deceased’s husband, was present at the time the body was found. He has been arrested and is assisting Police with the ongoing investigation.

Dead: 27-year-old Amar Jones

A

24-year-old female of Amelia’s Ward, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) was arrested and is currently in Police custody assisting with investigations into the murder of 27-year-old Amar Jones.

The incident occurred on Tuesday at Half Mile Public Road, Wismar, Linden. A motor vehicle has also been seized and is being processed as part of the inquiry.

Preliminary reports indicate that Jones, a driver from One Mile, Wismar, Linden, was travelling in

a motor canter along Half Mile Public Road when he was approached by a motor car. An unidentified male reportedly exited the vehicle and fired several rounds at Jones before re-entering the car and fleeing the scene.

Police who responded to the scene found Jones motionless in the driver’s seat of his vehicle. He was transported to the Linden Hospital Complex, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a doctor on duty.

His body was subsequently taken to G-Jetsco Funeral Home, where it awaits a

he Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) has confirmed that a water eruption along Agriculture Road, Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, was caused by water hammering, a pressure surge that can occur within pipelines under certain conditions.

In a statement issued following an investigation conducted on Wednesday morn-

ing, GWI said the incident occurred on December 30 at approximately 15:30h. The company clarified that the transmission line involved was not connected to any water treatment plant or active distribution network, and, as a result, there was no impact on existing water infrastructure. A section of the roadway was damaged as water pitched into the air, and according to the com-

pany, its technical teams responded promptly and restored the area to a crusher-run level. Further works are planned to reinstate the roadway with an asphaltic finish in the shortest possible time.

GWI said it will continue to monitor the area as a precaution and reiterated its commitment to maintaining the safety and reliability of its infrastructure.

resident Dr Irfaan Ali has acknowledged that while there have been improvements at the Guyana Power and Light (GPL), the electricity sector is still falling short of expectations, as the Government undertakes massive investments in the sector to overhaul the country’s ageing energy infrastructure.

The President made the remarks during a live interview on Tuesday, noting that although technical expertise has been brought in, longstanding structural challenges continue to affect reliability. He explained that after years of inadequate maintenance, the country’s entire transmission network must be rebuilt, an undertaking expected to cost close to US$600 million.

According to President Ali, the challenges facing GPL are compounded by

rapid growth in electricity demand driven by economic expansion, population growth and the addition of tens of thousands of new homes to the grid every few years. He said the system is being upgraded at the same time demand is increasing at an exponential pace, creating pressure on transmission, production and distribution.

“So, you have a transmission issue. We have a production issue. And yes, we had a delay on the gas issue. We acknowledge this.

Is it where we want it to be? No. But today we have a plan. We have a plan to address production. We have a plan to address transmission. We have a plan to address distribution. The tens of thousands of homes that are coming on every two or three years to the grid on the same system – we now have to move at a rapid pace to have the cable across the Demerara River completed, because it is not only affecting the power sector now, it is affecting our ability to bring ships in, driving up the costs. So, we are hoping that that project can get underway very, very quickly.

So, on the power side, there has been improvement,” the

President said.

President Ali said weaknesses in management, as well as challenges on the production and distribution sides, are actively being addressed. He also cited additional complications, including increased traffic accidents that have damaged major power poles and lapses in maintenance systems, further straining the network.

Looking ahead, the President said the Government is targeting the last quarter of 2026 for the Gas-to-Energy Project to begin delivering power, while cautioning that its success depends on the completion of transmission and distribution upgrades. He revealed that control centres and transmission towers are being rebuilt across the country as part of a wider reinvestment in the energy sector.

Despite the challenges, President Ali stressed that massive investments in infrastructure, human resource development, capacity building and institutional reform are already underway. These efforts, he said, are aimed at delivering a safer, more efficient and highly reliable electricity network while ensuring power remains available during the transition.

“We are rebuilding control centres and towers all across the country. So, we are fixing and reinvesting in the entire infrastructure in energy, whilst we have to keep the power on. We also have more trucks and cars on the roads. We had a number of accidents that took down major poles. And we also have lapses in our maintenance system. So, I can say with great clarity that there is a massive investment in infrastructure, human development, capacity building, institutional changes that will come on stream… To give us a safe, efficient and highly-reliable network,” he added.

MV Kanawan steering issue fixed in 5 mins – Edghill

ublic Works Minister Juan Edghill has confirmed that the MV Kanawan, which plies the Parika-Supenaam route, developed an issue while traversing the Essequibo River, but noted that it was rectified within minutes and that all passengers and crew are safe.

In a live broadcast on Wednesday, Edghill explained that the issue was encountered during the ship’s third trip for the day at around 12:10h.

“While the boat was en route to Supenaam, just off of the Wakenaam point, the boat, the MV Kanawan, encountered a challenge with

its steering. The captain and the crew, you know, rather than leaving the boat to drift with a defective steering, moved towards what we might want to call in colloquial or Creole language, ‘bracing the bush’. During that time, the engineers onboard rectified the problem,” the Minister explained.

“The engineers got the steering fixed, and everything went back up and running at about 12:15h, a mere five minutes. The vessel, the

MV Kanawan, arrived at the Supenaam stelling at 10 minutes after 1:00h,” he further noted.

Edghill lauded the captain for taking decisive action onboard, as he criticised the spread of misinformation about the incident on social media.

“Social media posts were made with a lot of negative comments and suggestions,” the Minister lamented.

“On this, the final day of the year 2025, I would have

thought that the social media posts would have suggested that the [Transport and Harbours Department] crew, in the interest of safety, took all passengers on board to safety, got the problem fixed and, in a very short time – five minutes – resumed the journey, and we are all safe now at Supenaam, and the very same boat is being loaded for its return trip to Parika.

That was not the case,” he said.

“We must have consistency in court rulings” – Pres Ali on inconsistent court rulings

P

resident Dr Irfaan Ali has emphasised the need for consistency in court rulings. “The Judiciary must be predictable. You can’t have an Amerindian man with a shotgun sent to prison for two years with an illegal firearm, and you have a man with semi-automatic weapons and high-calibre weapons given bail,” the Guyanese leader expressed on Tuesday during an interview with a panel of journalists and students.

The President’s remarks were in reference to recent court rulings, which were the subject of much public debate.

On December 22, 2025, Gerald Isaacs, a 42-year-old farmer of Jawarie Village, South Pakaraimas, was charged with two counts of possession of a firearm without a licence, contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of

the Firearms Act, Chapter 16:05. The guns in his possession were a .36-gauge shotgun and one 20-gauge shotgun. He appeared at the Lethem Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Omadatt Chandan, where he pleaded guilty to both counts. He was fined $50,000 and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the first count and fined $50,000 and sentenced to two years’ imprisonment on the second count.

Then on December 24, 2025, a 37-year-old businessman from Bladen Hall, East Coast Demerara, Amar Persaud, was granted bail in the sum of $500,000 after being charged with possession of ammunition and a firearm without a licence.

It is alleged that Persaud had in his possession 19 7.62x39mm ammunition, one black AK-47 weapon and one Taurus pistol, without being the holder of a firearm licence. Persaud appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where the bail was granted after he pleaded guilty. The case continues on January 21, 2026.

But according to President Ali, “We have to talk about these things; the inconsistency does not do well for the system.”

He explained that the Chancellor (acting) and Chief Justice (acting), as well as the Judicial Services Commission (JSC), are working assiduously to ensure inconsistencies are eradicated from the system.

Just about a week ago, Attorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall had raised similar concerns. During his programme “Issues in the News”, he had expressed that “a man can’t go to one court for Offence A and get a particular sentence, and another person goes to another court, charged with the same offence, and they get a radically different sentence.”

Nandlall explained that sentencing guidelines were developed and sent to the Judiciary for implementation. “They have had it now for over a year. Sentencing guidelines are important because they bring uniformity and consistency in sentencing and punishment…

Sentencing guidelines set down consistent rules and consistent criteria that must be followed by Judges and Magistrates when they are considering imposing a sentence, and once the rules are settled and they are in black and white and the criteria are known, then you would not have inconsistent and radically different sentencing from different Judges in relation to similar cases.”

“The Judiciary has it already. I have to follow up on why we have not seen it implemented,” he noted.

In 2022, the Government and the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) had signed a loan agreement for intervention in Guyana’s justice sector. This agreement would finance the Support for Criminal Justice System (SCJS) programme.

The SCJS programme is aimed at addressing institutional issues which affect the country’s criminal justice system. Part of the loan went towards consulting services, aimed at technical support for sentencing guidelines, encompassing diversion and alternative sentencing options.

In a judgement delivered in May 2020 in the case of Linton Pompey v the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) of Guyana, the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ) had stressed the need for sentencing guidelines to be developed and published by the Judiciary of Guyana, noting that the absence of such is a disservice to trial Judges.

Meanwhile, President Ali had recently underscored the need for strong, resilient judicial systems that can withstand leadership changes. “Once we build strong, resilient systems, we will be able to build an architecture that can withstand every storm. And I want to compliment the Office of the DPP and the Judiciary for focusing heavily on the system, because that is what we’ll all leave. And all of us leave the office, we leave the system, and the system is what ensures the survival of the product that we deliver,” the Head of State had explained.

President Ali has also announced that his Administration would be introducing laws that will hold Judges, Magistrates, and other legal practitioners more accountable.

He explained that these legislative changes would include robust disciplinary processes to ensure timely delivery of decisions in compliance with existing legislation, as well as the maintenance of high ethical and professional standards.

Black Bush floodwaters receding – 7 pumps drain farmlands; Regional Chairman says all plans implemented

loodwaters in sections of Black Bush Polder are now receding after emergency interventions by the Government, with seven pumps currently operating to drain affected farmlands.

Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne) Chairman Junior Bassant says all measures agreed on following Agriculture Minister Zulfikar Mustapha’s visit have now been fully implemented.

The water levels across parts of Black Bush Polder are gradually falling as drainage operations intensify following days of flooding that affected farmers and residents.

According to Bassant, the response began immediately after Minister Mustapha visited the area, with regional officials remaining on the ground to ensure the agreed interventions were carried out.

“The water has been receding.

Following Minister Zulfi’s intervention on Sunday, myself, the Regional Chair, as well as the Vice Chairman, has been on the ground continuously monitoring the situation, ensuring that the plans that we put in place have been implemented,” he said on Tuesday during an interview at Lesbeholden, which is one of the four polders comprising Black Bush Polder.

The Regional Chairman added that all drainage measures are now fully operational, with multiple pumps and structures working to remove excess water from the farmlands.

“So far, 100 per cent of

those plans have been implemented. We have in total seven pumps operating at Forty-Three, Eversham and Lesbeholden, draining the lands here, taking the water out into the sea. Those plans are active; all the pumps are functional as it is, all the kokers are functional as well,” he noted.

Bassant also credited the swift response of central Government officials, noting that action was taken immediately after the situation was brought to their attention.

Minister Mustapha, during a visit to the affected communities on Sunday, had committed to ensuring that steps are taken to prevent further inflow of water into the system, including locking off watercourse heads and prioritising drainage of both residential and farming areas.

“We will be putting additional pumps at Number Four and Three, and all the pumps at Adventure and Eversham are already working. We are also looking at placing small pumps directly into farmers’ plots so that they can remove the water faster,” Mustapha said.

According to the Minister, additional machinery is also being mobilised to assist farmers with empoldering their lands and accelerating drainage.

Bassant said those commitments have been implemented.

“Minister Zulfi came here and made a commitment, and I would like to thank him, His Excellency the President and the People’s Progressive Party Government. As a

Government, we do not sit idly by and let things go.

We come on the ground, and we get the job done, and we have been doing that since Sunday, following Minister Zulfi’s visit to Black Bush Polder.”

Beyond drainage, regional officials have been meet-

ing directly with farmers and residents to assess damage and ensure follow-up support.

“The Ministry of Agriculture has been going to do an assessment of persons and their damages. We have also been ensuring that the work has been done so

that the water is coming off of people’s farms and ensuring that water is being run smoothly,” Bassant pointed out.

According to the Regional Chairman, feedback from residents has been encouraging, with many welcoming the rapid response and con-

tinued presence of officials on the ground.

Regional officials say monitoring and drainage operations will continue in the coming days, while assessments are ongoing to determine the full extent of losses suffered by farmers in Black Bush Polder.

11 murders recorded in Region 6 for 2025 …120 left homeless by fires

R

egion Six (East Berbice-Corentyne) recorded 11 murders in 2025, the same number as in 2024 but significantly lower than the 19 recorded in 2023, as Police point to stronger investigative performance, improved community cooperation and a higher crime clear-up rate across the division.

According to regional law enforcement officials, the division achieved an estimated 130 per cent crime detection rate in 2025, compared with about 90 per cent in the previous year, largely due to the clearance of both current and previously outstanding cases.

Regional Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner Shivpersaud Bacchus, said the improvement reflects growing trust between residents and law enforcement, supported by

increased engagement, patrols and public interaction across communities in East Berbice-Corentyne.

He noted that persons are now more willing to share information and participate in discussions with the Police, which has helped investigators move more swiftly in solving serious crimes.

“Over the past year, we have strengthened our relationship with communities throughout the division.

People are communicating more with the Police, attending conferences and coming forward with information. That cooperation has played a major role in helping us clear cases and improve our overall performance,” Bacchus said.

While the overall murder figure remained unchanged year-on-year, several brutal killings during 2025

shocked communities and underscored the violent nature of some of the offences being investigated.

Among the most recent was the December 22, 2025 robbery-murder of 61-yearold businessman Chen Yongping, who was fatally stabbed during an armed attack at his food business in Cumberland Village, East Canje.

Earlier in November, 56-year-old Emran Kadir of Belvedere Village was found dead at his home following an altercation during a drinking session.

In July, violence again erupted when 38-year-old labourer Gavin Daniels, also known as “Talk to Me,” was fatally stabbed at Jackson Creek.

Despite these incidents, Police maintain that the overall trend shows improved case resolution and

responsiveness, supported by stronger intelligence gathering and cooperation at the community level.

Traffic

Alongside violent crime, road safety remained a major concern in the region during 2025, even as overall fatalities declined. A total of 17 people lost their lives in traffic accidents, compared with 20 in 2024.

Motorcyclists continued to account for the highest number of road deaths, with nine riders killed during the year. Pedestrians accounted for three fatalities, while pillion riders and cyclists were also among those who lost their lives.

ularly motorcyclists, to exercise greater caution.

“We continue to lose too many motorcyclists on our roads. Speeding, reckless riding and failure to wear proper safety gear remain major concerns. I am urging riders to slow down, obey the law and think about the families who depend on them,” he said.

Police reported sustained enforcement throughout the year, with thousands of traffic cases recorded for offences such as speeding, driving under the influence, failure to wear helmets and other breaches of road laws.

Patrols, road checks and public education exercises were intensified, alongside school and driver outreach programmes.

Fire outbreaks added another layer of concern for Region Six during 2025.

Official figures show that 83 dwelling houses were destroyed by fires, leaving 120 persons homeless across the county.

Divisional Fire Officer Clive McDonald said many of the fires were linked to preventable causes such as faulty electrical wiring, unsafe connections, unattended cooking and the careless use of open flames.

“Too many families are losing everything within minutes because of fires that could have been prevented. We are urging residents to check their wiring, avoid overloading electrical outlets and ensure appliances are switched off when not in use. Fire safety starts in the home,” McDonald said.

He also encouraged the installation of smoke detectors where possible and urged residents to report fire hazards early, noting that prevention remains the most effective form of protection.

Authorities say that while progress has been made in crime detection, traffic enforcement and emergency response, the figures for murders, road fatalities and fires show that sustained cooperation between citizens and emergency services remains critical as Region Six heads into 2026.

25% of listed cases disposed of during Demerara October Criminal Assizes S

ome 25 per cent of the total number of cases listed for hearing during the Demerara October 2025 Criminal Assizes have been disposed of.

The matters were heard before Chief Justice (ag) Navindra Singh, Justice Gino Persaud, Justice Damone Younge, and Justice Jacqueline JosiahGraham.

The Assizes, which commenced on October 7, 2025, saw the State disposing of 36 cases out of 143 listed. Of these, 24 matters were presented in the High Court before a Judge and jury.

Of the cases heard, 19 were for the offence of murder, two for attempted murder, one for manslaughter, and two for sexual offences.

Additionally, 12 matters were nolle prosequi by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

for murder, and one each for manslaughter, attempt to commit murder, and rape of a child under 16 years.

State Counsel Padma Dubraj, Praneta Seeraj, and Alvaro Ramotar completed five matters for the offence of murder before Justice Gino Persaud. In three of these cases, the accused pleaded guilty to the less-

er offence of manslaughter.

One will be sentenced on January 20, 2026, following a sentencing hearing, while the other two will await sentencing on January 26, 2026, after their respective hearings.

In one of the remaining trials, the jury unanimously found the accused guilty of the lesser offence of manslaughter, and he was sentenced to 18 years’ imprisonment. The other accused was acquitted by a jury verdict.

and will await sentencing in January 2026 following a sentencing hearing.

In the Sexual Offences Court, the trial Judge was only able to conduct one trial due to the exigencies of duty. State Counsel Latifah Elliot, Delon Fraser, and Narisa Peterkin appeared in the matter. However, the complainant declined to testify against the accused, and the trial Judge directed the jury to return a formal verdict of not guilty.

Of the 12 matters nolle prosequi by the DPP, two were for murder, three for attempt to commit murder, four for sexual offences, two for manslaughter, and one for obtaining money by false pretence. In these cases, complainants either declined to testify or could not be located, and their testimony constituted the main evidence. In one matter, the main witness has since died.

Revised Laws of Guyana, Law Reports to be launched on Jan 14

A

ttorney General and Legal Affairs Minister Anil Nandlall has announced that the revised edition of the Laws of Guyana, updated from 2012 to December 31, 2021, as well as the Law Reports of Guyana from 2008 to 2021, will be launched on January 14.

Speaking during his programme “Issues in the News” on Tuesday, Nandlall explained the process of law revision, reminding that the last time this exercise was done was in 2012.

“On that occasion, the law revision exercise extended as far back as 1977 because since 1977 we never revised the laws of this country until 2012. So, you had a large volume of laws to revise, to bring in all the amendments, find them, bring them together, insert them into principal law and

then put all the new laws together, renumbering them, and when that process is completed, it’s called the revised Laws of Guyana,” he noted.

“Revision of laws is the process whereby all the amendments that have been made to principal legislation and all the new laws are consolidated into volumes and published one time as the laws of the country as of a particular date. The date here would be [when] the laws are revised as of the 31st of December 2021,” he further outlined.

Nandlall also underscored the importance of the Law Reports of Guyana. The last time law reports were printed was in 2012, from 1977 to 2007.

“Judges decide cases, and the decisions of these Judges guide future decisions. For there to be uniformity and

consistency in judicial decision-making and as a fundamental principle of the rule of law, a society must have Judges who make decisions consistently and who follow existing judicial decisions. It’s called the doctrine of precedent, and the court system is structured in such a way that the decisions of the higher court, binds the decision of lower court,” he explained, noting that only important cases that determine critical principles of law to guide future decisions on similar issues are reported.

Meanwhile, he related that work has already begun on the next set of revised laws of Guyana and law reports.

“As soon as we launch this up to 2021 December, we will begin a process to start to compile from 2022 to next set of years. That pro-

cess has already begun, and this has to be a continuous exercise,” he stated, emphasising that the process is not an easy one.

“These are not ordinary achievements; they are very tedious work, complicated work; time-consuming work, and they cost a lot of money,” he explained. Nevertheless, Nandlall emphasised that the exercise is crucial.

“It’s important that the laws of a country are in one place, are easily accessible, and that the case law of a country is also equally accessible and in a centralised place,” he posited.

Reports are that the last comprehensive revision of Guyana’s laws, known as the “Purple Book/Volumes”, was published in 2012.

Currently, there are 14 volumes of the Laws of Guyana, but with the launch of the new editions, this number

will double to 28 volumes.

Reports also indicated that Nandlall had said that the Government will print 200 sets of those 28 volumes.

In addition to the hard copies, the soft copy of the revised Laws of Guyana will also be available.

Over 16,000 Amerindians legally obtain land titles from 2020 to date – Minister

ore than 16,000 Amerindians have legally obtained land titles since 2020 as the Government continues to advance its Amerindian Land Titling (ALT) Programme, according to Amerindian Affairs Minister Sarah Browne-Shadeek.

Speaking during a live broadcast on Tuesday, the Minister said the Administration recognises land tenure as fundamental to the dignity, security, and development of Indigenous peoples. She noted that Guyana has emerged as a regional and international leader in addressing long-standing land claims through a transparent and consultative process involving village councils.

Shadeek explained that from August 2020 to date, 15 additional villages have been demarcated, with 10 of those receiving certificates of title.

“This flagship project has made significant achievements. August 2020 to date, another 15 villages have been demarcated, and of these, 10 have been given their certificates of title.

This amongst an additional 16,174 Amerindians having legal title to their land during the period 2020-2024. The Amerindian Land Titling project, from inception to date, has benefited a total of 33,204 Amerindians with over 33,363 square miles of title land,” the Minister revealed.

These milestones have enabled indigenous communities to safeguard their

lands and natural resources, fostering sustainable social and economic development.

Minister BrowneShadeek emphasised that the project is not merely about land ownership but

also about empowering indigenous populations to exercise their rights, pursue economic opportunities, and preserve their cultural heritage.

“Moving forward, we will continue to work with leaders to ensure they have the capacity to lead and help residents ensure that they receive transparency and accountability from their leaders. As we move forward as a nation, let’s remember this. Guyana’s prosperity is meaningless if it does not uplift all its people. When Amerindian villages thrive, Guyana thrives. When indigenous youth succeed, the nation succeeds. When development respects culture and land, the future is secure,” she lamented.

Earlier this year, the

Government of Guyana had reported a significant investment of US$900,000 in the ALT project in 2024, underscoring its commitment to addressing historical land tenure issues and promoting indigenous rights.

The expenditure formed part of the Amerindian Affairs Ministry’s $800 million budgetary allocation for the year.

The ALT project activities were complemented by extensive consultations with Amerindian communities to ensure their needs and perspectives were incorporated into the process.

The Amerindian land titling process, which is being facilitated by the Amerindian Act of 2006, was scheduled to commence in 2013 and end in 2016 under the aus-

pices of the Government of Guyana and the United Nations Development Fund, with funding of $2.2 billion (US$10.7 million) provided from the Guyana REDD+ Investment Fund (GRIF). However, the project was extended from 2016 to 2018 and subsequently from 2019 to 2021 and again from 2022 to 2024.

The continuous execution of works aims to help the Ministry clear its substantial backlog in the approval and distribution of Amerindian land titles.

This is significant because Guyana has a 10 per cent indigenous makeup, with 16.4 per cent of the landmass based on the current census data. But the process of new land titling has been a slow one.

s concerns continue to mount over rising tensions between the United States and neighbouring Venezuela, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces in Guyana, President Dr Irfaan Ali, has reassured that there is a comprehensive defence strategy to protect the country and its people in the event of any escalation.

Speaking with reporters on the side-lines of an event on Wednesday at the Office of the President in Georgetown, the Guyanese Head of State was asked about plans in place to protect Guyana and its people should the country be caught in the crossfire between Washington DC and Caracas.

“I would not publicly tell you about our defence strategy, but I can reassure you that with our international partners, we have, over the number of years, developed, and we’ve been

working on, a comprehensive defence plan and strategy for our country,” the Guyanese leader posited.

He went on to add that, “…And I’m confident that with [support from] our international partners, that strategy would work and would be able to protect us. I have confidence in our men and women in uniform, in the leadership of the Guyana Defence Force and in the partnership with our partners.”

According to the Commander-in-Chief, the safety and security of Guyana and its people are paramount, including those who are residing in other territories.

We have a lot of Guyanese who returned home from Venezuela over the years because of the situation over there. And I’m sure that whatever support is needed, in the event that Guyanese in Venezuela or anywhere else in the region, feeling the need to return home to be safe, that they can expect support of the Government,” President Ali assured.

Only two weeks ago, the Guyanese Head of State reminded reporters of the aggression and threats Guyana is facing from the Nicolás Maduro regime.

Venezuela has deployed a number of aggressive tactics over the years, including earlier in 2025, as it continues to lay spurious claims to more than two-thirds of

Guyana’s landmass – the entire Essequibo region and a portion of the country’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), where successful oil operations are ongoing offshore by US-based oil giant ExxonMobil and its partners.

The US Government is conducting massive military operations off the Venezuelan shore to combat transnational crime and the illicit drug trade – an operation that the Ali-led Administration has fully backed.

“You know that we have a peculiar situation in Guyana. We just had Venezuelans being charged for terrorist activity in Guyana that claimed the life of [a] young person. We have a border situation to manage [whereby] we have an active threat from Venezuela on the sovereignty of this country. And my responsibili-

ty is to keep Guyanese safe, to keep Guyana safe, and to work with all our allies and partners in doing that.

And I intend to continue to work strongly with our allies in doing exactly that,” the Head of State told reporters on December 17.

In the same breath, President Ali added, “My Administration has absolutely no sympathy for drug traffickers. Tens of thousands, millions of lives are destroyed, and also economies are destroyed by smuggling… We also see our Region as one in which democracy must be able to thrive, in which the rule of law must win every single day, [and] in which the freedom of our people, wherever they live and exist, must be honoured. And that is an important element of any modern society, and we support the Region being a zone of peace.”

Nothing to lose: Wilson embraces underdog role ahead of Super 16 finale tonight

estern Tigers Football Club (FC) head into tonight’s Super 16 Final brimming with belief and confidence.

According to player/coach Daniel Wilson, their dramatic semi-final victory over defending champions Guyana Defence Force FC has been a turning point for the club.

Wilson believes the result has lifted the entire camp, especially after years of heartbreak against the Army side.

“I think the result plays a big part going forward – confidence,” Wilson said. “For two years, we lost to GDF on penalties. Both were in finals, so the third one, we needed the third one. The belief in the camp is great.”

nal, battling back and holding their nerve despite being reduced to ten men against a physically imposing GDF unit.

“The spirit the guys show and the fight after going down to ten men against a team like the Army, who everybody knows will be fitter – you can’t ask for more from the boys,” Wilson added.

That confidence was most evident during the penalty shootout, where Tigers converted all five kicks to advance. Wilson credited that composure to preparation and self-belief.

“The composure is coming from self-confidence. Everyone that steps up asks to kick a penalty before the shootout starts,” he explained. “Selfconfidence plays a big part, not only in sports but in life generally. This

Meanwhile, Sripal credited his entire team for their success in a short period. He also reflected on how Mapa Do Brasil’s entry into Guyana was not straightforward.

“Well, when Mapa came in, we had some transportation issues. We worked hard to get him up to a level, but on Boxing Day he proved his worth. He was a top horse in Brazil.”

“We were going to scratch Mapa on Boxing Day and run him on New Year’s, but it was a last-minute entry and a last-minute jockey change. Appadu rode like he was an international jockey; many people asked if he was from overseas. Appadu came up with his own plans on the day, and I left it all to him,” Sripal said.

He added, “Our second year in horse racing and being stable of the year is extraordinary.

Our win goes out to our team for putting in the hard work.”

The next race day is set for January 4, 2026, at Rising Sun. JS Racing Stables had a good outing at that venue on Guyana Cup Day, and they are hoping to extend their purple patch on the opening race day of the new year.

GCB reaffirms commitment to inclusive cricket; expands Indigenous, hinterland development P resident of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), Bissoondyal Singh, has reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with teachers, coaches, technology partners, and – most importantly – parents and guardians to strengthen the development of cricket in Guyana.

This is in keeping with the vision of President Dr Irfaan Ali to make cricket more inclusive throughout Guyana. “We will continue our outreach to hinterland communities to unearth new talent and advance cricket into a modern, inclusive, and sustainable future,” Bissoondyal stated in his New Year’s Message.

As such, he called on the public to join
