orks are progressing on the new Parika Port Facility in Region Three (Essequibo Islands-West Demerara), which Public Works Minister, Juan Edghill has said will contribute to the overall development of the region.

In a live broadcast on Monday, Edghill emphasised that under the leadership of President Dr Irfaan Ali, all regions across the country will experience development and all citizens will benefit from opportunities to advance their lives.

In Region Three, he explained that the modern terminal will boost the agriculture and tourism sectors, will creating avenues for entrepreneurs to thrive.

“We want to put in a mar-

And from that disjointed, messy looking, confusing to the mind of some people who are not familiar, you will see a brandnew modern terminal that is promoting economic activity…That's where the jetboats will take off from with the tourists that want to explore our waterways.

Back in June, a contract was awarded for the first phase of the new US$20 million Parika Ferry Stelling and Waterfront Development Project. Phase

one of this project includes foundation works and river defence, totalling more than

$4.5 billion.

Executing the first phase of works are contractors Gaico Construction, Toolsie Persaud Limited, and A&S General Contractors.

Before the project design was greenlighted, consultations were held with all stakeholders, including farmers, minibus drivers, taxi drivers, boat operators, and businesses, essentially all agencies that currently operate from the area.

In phase two of the project, a marina, for yachts arriving from the Caribbean

port produce directly to the Caribbean.

Meanwhile, in his live broadcast on Monday, Edghill also outlined how the new Schoonord to Parika four-lane highway will further contribute to the development of the region.

“At this stage, the first set of bridges have already been awarded, the entire alignment is cleared, and in collaboration with the Ministry of Housing, the road, the design and the build-out of the road is moving forward with great urgency to be able to

20-25% limit, $30,000 fine, no windscreen tint beyond 6-inch visor M otorists in Guyana will face stricter rules on vehicle window tints starting January 1, 2026, as the Government rolls out the Motor Vehicles and Road Traffic (Tint) Regulations 2025. The regulations establish clear limits for visible light transmission (VLT) and fines for non-compliance, while providing exemptions for select vehicles.

Home Affairs Minister Oneidge Walrond, who spearheaded the revised policy, explained that the move was aimed at strengthening public safety, ensuring transparency, and creating a modern, enforceable legal framework for vehicle tints.

Under the new rules, front windscreens may not have any tint except for a six-inch visor. Front-side windows must allow at least 25 per cent light penetration, while rear-side windows and the rear windscreen must allow at least 20 per cent. Mirrored or reflective tints are strictly prohibited.

Fines for non-compliance have been set at $30,000, applicable to both vehicle operators and installers.

Despite the previous law allowing only a minimum of 65 per cent visible light transmission, over 70 per cent of vehicles on our roads operated outside the legal limits, Walrond stated.

The new regulations reflect modern realities, safeguard public safety, and provide clear standards for all road users.

Back in November, the Home Affairs Minister had announced a tint policy which allowed all vehicles 35 per cent light penetration on side windows and 70% on windshields without needing a waiver. The move was intended to ensure fairness and transparency. There was a mandatory compliance deadline of December 31, 2025, with penalties of a $75,000 fine for non-compliance.

However, on Monday, the Minister announced a revised policy, which takes effect January 1.

In a statement, Walrond explained that these adjustments were made in keeping with the People s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Administration s policy of responding to feedback.

She explained that: Following my initial announcement earlier this month, we received public feedback and, in keeping with the hallmark approach of the People s Progressive Party/Civic Administration, we listened carefully and made further adjustments.

Waiver, exemptions

Under the previous policy announced in November, restricted waivers would have been issued only to spe-

cified high-security groups, including diplomats, government officials, and individuals assessed as high profile for national security purposes. These waivers must be expressly approved by the Home Affairs Minister.

The updated regime represents a significant departure from previous national standards. Under the old policy, window tint was not permissible without a waiver, and even approved waivers capped tint at 65 per cent light penetration, while factory-installed tinted windows were generally disallowed regardless of waivers.

However, under the new policy, exemptions will be available for certain state, security, medical, diplomatic, and high-risk commercial vehicles. Applicants must submit requests through a prescribed process, with approved exemptions recorded

in a national digital registry.

The Government stressed that the adjusted fines are designed to deter violations without being overly punitive and it would monitor compliance closely.

Further adjustments, including potential increases to fines, may be considered depending on enforcement outcomes.

Motorists are encouraged to take advantage of the amnesty period to ensure compliance and avoid penalties once full enforcement begins.

Tint examination sites

To ease the transition, a three-month amnesty period will allow motorists to test and adjust their tints at voluntary testing sites nationwide without penalty.

In Region One, tint testing will be conducted at the Port Kaituma, Mabaruma

and Moruca Police Stations.

Region Two will have four designated locations: the Aurora, Charity, Anna Regina and Suddie Police Stations. In Region Three, motorists can access tint examination services at the Tuschen, Leonora, Den Amstel, Vreed-en-Hoop, La Grange, Wales and Parfaite Harmonie Police Stations.

In Region Four (A), testing will be done at Traffic Headquarters, and the East La Penitence, Brickdam, Ruimveldt and Turkeyen Police Stations. Region Four (B) will accommodate motorists at the Providence, Farm-Herstelling, Diamond and Grove Police Stations, as well as the Madewini Outpost and the Highway Patrol Base. Meanwhile, Region Four (C) will offer services at the Sparendaam, Beterverwagting, Vigilance, Cove and John and Mahaica Police Stations.

In Region Five, tint examinations will be available at the Mahaicony, Weldaad, Fort Wellington and Blairmont Police Stations.

Region Six motorists may visit the New Amsterdam (Central), Albion, Number 51, Whim and Springlands Police Stations.

Region Seven has designated the Bartica Police Station as its sole testing site, while Region Eight motorists will be served at the Mahdia Police Station. In Region Nine, tint testing will be conducted at the Lethem, Annai and Aishalton Police Stations. Region 10 motorists can access the service at the Mackenzie, Wismar and Mabura Police Stations.

Nurturing values, creativity & young writers

T

he engagement between the Education Minister and a young author has drawn attention to a wider and pressing issue within the national education landscape, the need to deliberately nurture values, creativity, and leadership alongside academic attainment. At a time when education systems are under pressure to deliver measurable outcomes in literacy, numeracy, and science, the role of storytelling, moral reasoning, and creative expression risks being treated as secondary. This moment serves as a reminder that education policy must balance technical competence with character development if it is to produce well-rounded citizens.

Across Guyana, concerns continue to surface about student behaviour, cooperation, and social responsibility within schools.

Teachers regularly highlight challenges related to teamwork, empathy, and respect among learners, particularly as digital culture and social media reshape how young people interact. These are not problems that can be solved solely through stricter rules or revised curricula focused only on examination performance. Values such as respect, fairness, and responsibility are best cultivated through consistent exposure to ideas that encourage reflection and shared understanding. Literature and storytelling have long played that role in societies across the world.

Children s writing that centres on ethical behaviour, cooperation, and empathy demonstrates how young voices can meaningfully contribute to this process. When students see peers engaging in creative work that reinforces positive values, those messages often resonate more deeply than directives delivered from authority figures. This underscores the importance of creating structured opportunities within the education system where young people are encouraged to write, read, and discuss stories that reflect both personal experiences and broader social ideals.

The discussion around a national writing camp highlights an important policy direction. Such initiatives, when carefully designed and sustainably supported, can address multiple developmental goals at once. Writing camps can strengthen literacy skills, encourage critical thinking, and build confidence in self-expression. At the same time, collaborative activities inherent in creative workshops foster teamwork, listening skills, and mutual respect. These are competencies increasingly recognised as essential for leadership in both civic life and the modern workplace.

However, the success of initiatives of this nature depends on how they are positioned within the wider education framework. One-off programmes, while well intentioned, risk becoming symbolic gestures if not embedded within a broader strategy for arts and literacy development. For meaningful impact, creative writing opportunities should complement classroom instruction, teacher training, and access to age-appropriate reading materials. Educators must also be equipped to guide students in linking creative expression with ethical reflection and social awareness.

A programme engaging a small number of students can serve as a pilot, but long-term planning must consider how similar opportunities can be extended to hinterland and rural communities, where resources are often limited and literacy challenges more pronounced. Talent is not confined to urban centres or well-resourced schools. A national approach to nurturing young writers should actively seek inclusion, ensuring that children from diverse backgrounds are able to participate and be recognised.

The alignment of creative initiatives with national development goals is another critical consideration. Guyana s future leadership will require individuals who can communicate clearly, think creatively, and act responsibly. Technical expertise alone will not suffice in addressing complex social, economic, and environmental challenges. Storytelling, when guided by strong educational principles, helps young people understand perspectives beyond their own and prepares them for collaborative problem-solving.

At the policy level, the engagement of senior education officials signals recognition that literacy development extends beyond basic reading and writing proficiency. It involves cultivating a culture where ideas are exchanged respectfully and creativity is valued. This recognition must translate into consistent investment, clear objectives, and measurable outcomes that go beyond participation numbers.

Evaluation mechanisms should assess not only skill development but also improvements in confidence, cooperation, and ethical awareness among participants.

Ultimately, the broader issue highlighted by this engagement is the role of education in shaping the kind of society Guyana seeks to build.

Schools are spaces where values are reinforced and future citizens are formed. Encouraging young people to articulate positive messages through writing is not a diversion from core educational goals but an essential complement to them.

As education reforms continue, creative and values-based initiatives should be treated as integral components of national development rather than optional additions. When young voices are supported and guided, they contribute not only stories, but also insights into the moral and social direction of the country. That contribution deserves sustained attention, thoughtful policy support, and a clear place within the education system s long-term vision.

Need cheering up after a terrible year? I may have just the story you’re looking for

P

erhaps you are searching for reasons to be cheerful at the end of what has been a particularly dispiriting year? In that case, read on. In November, I was on a train travelling into London. When I got off the train and headed for the ticket barrier, I realised I didn’t have my wallet. I knew that I had it when I boarded. I made an undignified scrabble and search through my coat, jacket and trouser pockets that deserved the comic skills of a Charlie Chaplin or Jacques Tati. There was, though, no mistake. I had somehow managed to leave my wallet on the train.

A nice station attendant took the details and said he would pass the message down the line. I left him my mobile number. But it was rush hour, the man pointed out, and the chances of getting the wallet back had probably vanished with the departing train. Meanwhile I rang my bank and eventually succeeded in cancelling my cards. I felt horribly stupid, old and embarrassed. I went for a drink with friends and felt sorry for myself.

A couple of hours later, I looked at my phone. Among my emails was one from a woman called Natalya. She had found my wallet on the train, she explained, and had already dropped it off with the security people at the Guardian’s office. Everything was intact, including the cards and some cash. She had seen the Guardian connection because of my National Union of Journalists card, and had taken the not inconsiderable trouble to go to the office and hand the wallet in.

One of my friends is prone to ask people if, in these dark political times, they can nom-

inate three things that should give us all cause for optimism.

You might want to try it, because it’s a harder exercise than it sounds, but for me, the story of Natalya’s kindness offers a reassuring start.

I imagine Shakespeare must have had a story of this sort in mind when he wrote that lovely line in the Merchant of Venice about the candle whose beam shines like a good deed in a naughty world.

Cheeringly, I am not alone. Only a couple of weeks after I got my wallet back, I read an article by the Belfast Telegraph’s excellent journalist Sam McBride, which began: “Last week I was about to get on a bus in Belfast city centre when I realised that the wallet I thought was in my hip pocket wasn’t there, wasn’t in my bag, wasn’t in my coat – wasn’t anywhere on my person.” And, yes, you guessed the rest. A little while later, Sam’s phone had rung with the news that the bus driver had handed the wallet in, cash untouched.

Perhaps McBride’s experience and mine were just a coincidence – two journalists separated by the Irish Sea experiencing the same good fortune at the same time. Perhaps, if so, they illustrate a version of Rupert Sheldrake’s deeply controversial theory of formative causation, or so-called morphic resonance, in which humans in different places somehow learn to behave differently without anyone urging them to do so or without anyone orchestrating it.

The safer explanation, however, is simply that there are more Natalyas than you may think. Maybe a lot more.

I’m not saying that if you lose your wallet, I can guarantee you an observant good citizen who will ensure you get it back. Like Shakespeare, we

live in a naughty world. But I am prepared to say that the chances of you encountering the kindness of strangers, as I did, are quite a bit higher than the unremitting bleakness of an all too common view of Britain in 2025 might lead you to believe.

There is no way around the fact that the media – traditional and social alike – are sleepless drivers of our reflexive collective pessimism.

We live in a country where failure, risk and danger are deemed ever present and on the increase. Our media endlessly reports terrible cases of cruelty, exploitation, greed and anger. As a result, no one in my profession would ever think my wallet story was worth sharing, except perhaps at Christmas.

Of course, in the wider scheme of things, my wallet story was trivial. But reflexive pessimism is a big issue for modern societies, not a little one. Here’s a wider illustration of how it can work. When Andy Burnham was health secretary in the Gordon Brown government, he invited a group of us into Whitehall to share some private polling that was worrying the government. The polling showed public expectations of the NHS were getting lower, driven largely by repeated news of healthcare crises. At the same time, however, the public’s own personal experiences of the NHS, and the experience of their closest relatives, remained almost uniformly excellent.

I remember feeling sceptical about these findings. I knew too many bad NHS stories, even back then, as well as some better ones. But the questions Burnham posed in the light of the department’s own focus groups remained valid. How do we get past the public’s conviction that

the macro-NHS was in decline, and that they had simply been lucky? How do we get people to see that their own good experiences were not freak good fortune, and to have confidence that the NHS – or a myriad other embodiments of the common good – could deliver for all?

In essence, this is the same possibility that is posed

by Natalya’s single act of kindness. You can put it in various ways. Maybe all of us, and our media and our politicians in particular, are too quick to believe the worst.

Maybe our social and moral norms are more decent and resilient than we assume.

Maybe we live in a better country than we all seem to think. Maybe we should be less angry.

If even some of this is true, the questions that follow from Natalya’s decency are ones such as these. What can we get beyond the belief, fired by so much political and media exaggeration, that we all inhabit a howling wilderness of incivility, misbehaviour and ineffectiveness from which our only refuge is either fear or repression?

What can we do to help ourselves see that individual experiences of kindness, politeness and decency are not random oases of good fortune in a desert of general nastiness?

The answers are obviously not easy. But they are out there, and they are worth nurturing. Natalya’s kindness reminded me that, in spite of so much evidence to the contrary, the better angels of our nature are not necessarily dead or doomed. There are still plenty of things in our society which work well, exactly as you want them to do. (The Guardian) (Martin Kettle is a Guardian columnist)

ducation Minister Sonia Parag on Wednesday morning met with young author Maliha Thakurdyal at her Brickdam office.

Maliha, a Grade Five student of Cindy’s

Academy, is the author of Kayla’s Pizza Party, and has recently completed the second book in her series. Her writing focuses on the message of treating others as one would like to be treated.

During the meeting, Maliha explained that her motivation for writing was to help instil strong moral values in children in Guyana. She highlighted teamwork and cooperation as areas where stu-

dents continue to develop.

She was accompanied by her mother, Kaylani Thakurdyal, and presented copies of her book to the Minister.

Parag was joined by Chief Education Officer Saddam Hussain; Assistant Chief Education Officer (Literacy) Stembiso Grant; and Director of the National Centre for Educational Research and Development (NCERD), Omwattie Ramdin.

Discussions also focused on the establishment of a national writing camp aimed at helping young people express creativity while developing leadership and responsibility through storytelling. The proposed camp is expected to engage about 30 children and will include activities designed to strengthen writing skills, confidence, creativity, and teamwork.

The initiative is aligned with the vision of President Dr Irfaan Ali and is intended to support the development of young talent while promoting leadership and responsibility. It also aims to create a community of young writers, with opportunities for expansion in the future.

Universal Set The universal set is all the integers.

When talking about sets, it is fairly standard to use Capital Letters to represent the set, and lowercase letters to represent an element in that set.

So for example, A is a set, and a is an element in A. Same with B and b, and C and c.

Step 4: Trim gold and silver tinsel pipe cleaners at different lengths and wrap them around a pencil to create a spiral effect before sticking each spiral tinsel pipe cleaner to the wreath.

Step 5: Stick the gold numbers to the black rectangular card and stick it at an angle in the middle of the wreath.

Guyana’s NYC consulate processes thousands of visas as global interest surges T

he Guyana Consulate in New York has processed more than 7,000 Guyanese visas and passports so far this year, reflecting growing global interest in Guyana and increased demand for consular services among the diaspora, according to Guyana’s Consul General to New York, Ambassador Michael Brotherson.

Speaking during a recent programme, Ambassador Brotherson said the figures build on strong performance last year, when the mission processed approximately 10,000 passports.

He explained that the consulate continues to see a steady flow of visa applications from foreign nationals, describing this as a clear indication of Guyana’s growing appeal on the international stage, with visa services, now occupying a significant portion of the consulate’s daily operations.

“So far for this year, last year we did 10,000, as I mentioned on a previous program, so far for this year we've processed over 7,000 of the new machine-readable passports, so passports, visas of course. Last year, sorry, the last time I spoke I think I mentioned we had over 30-odd countries, nationals from 30-odd countries opposed our mission to have visas to go to Guyana.

Again, I believe it's a reflection of the attraction of our country, our nation at this point in time. We've seen, even though this year has not been completed as yet, we've seen similar or more numbers this time around, persons from all kinds, I think I worked with a list here, but I won't delve into that, but countries from all around the world that require a visa to go to Guyana, so visas also keep us very occupied,” Ambassador Brotherson said.

Beyond passports and visas, the New York mission processes a wide range of critical documents for Guyanese living abroad.

These include applications for birth, marriage and death certificates, which are facilitated through the consulate and verified by the General Registrar’s Office in Georgetown.

The consulate also handles overseas registration for second-generation Guyanese born abroad, allowing them to acquire Guyanese citizenship by descent. Under Guyanese law, any person born to a Guyanese parent after 1966 is eligible to apply for citizenship by descent, once all requirements are met.

“I think prior to 1982 or so it used to be the father and father to be Guyanese, but then now it's not only the father but the mother. We do that, we register those such persons,

their children, it stops at the second generation as I said, so your children can gain Guyanese citizenship through you, a Guyanese, but not your grandchildren. And that registration process is often sometimes loosely referred to as they get a birth certificate, but you can only get a birth certificate when you were born, so what we do is give them a registration certificate, verified of course by the General Registrar's Office in Guyana. It's a very profound process,” he explained.

He said applicants must submit original documents, including the birth certificates of their Guyanese parents, which are then sent to Georgetown for verification before approval is granted.

Once issued, the registration certificate can be used to apply for a Guyanese passport.

The Consul General also

highlighted the issuance of emergency travel certificates for bona fide Guyanese nationals who need to return home urgently. These certificates, he explained, are strictly for direct travel to Guyana and cannot be used for onward travel to other countries.

In addition, the consulate provides daily notarization services, including powers of attorney, bank letters, life certificates and other legal documents required for conducting business or personal matters in Guyana.

Brotherson stressed that Guyanese banks and institutions often require documents to be notarized specifically by the consulate rather than by foreign notaries.

He said the mission goes beyond basic processing to ensure that vulnerable nationals, particularly the elderly, are protected from potential fraud or exploitation.

“Many times we call things to the attention of our nationals and ask, ‘Are you sure this is what you want to do?’ And when they take a second look, they realise it’s not,” he said, adding that the approach is meant to be responsible and supportive, not intrusive.

Mayor blocks attempt to enforce court order against vendors outside Yhip’s Bakery …Town Clerk warns delay risks consequences for M&CC from court T he Georgetown Mayor and City Council (M&CC) will return “this weekend” to clear street vendors operating outside Yhip’s Bakery at the corner of Robb and Alexander streets, Georgetown despite an earlier action by Mayor Alfred Mentore that halted the enforcement of a High Court order, Town Clerk Candace Nelson has said.

Nelson, in an interview with Guyana Times, confirmed that the council remains legally bound to enforce a mandamus issued by the High Court compelling the removal of fruit and vegetable vendors from the area, and insisted that the administration has every intention of complying with the order.

“There is a court order compelling us to remove the vendors from around Yhip’s Bakery… and we attempted to remove those vendors,” Nelson stated.

On Sunday, the council workers turned up at the location with two tractor-trailers to execute the court order. However, the operation was abruptly called off after Mayor

Mentore arrived on the scene and directed that the vendors be allowed to remain temporarily.

According to Nelson, the mayor’s position was that the vendors should be given additional time to operate through the Christmas season.

“The mayor did turn up and he insisted that the vendors should remain there. His contention is that he wants the vendors to remain there until after the Christmas season is over,” she explained. “So he suggested that they stay there until January 4th, where they can sell off their stuff and then they remove from that.”

Immediate enforcement & compliance

The town clerk said the intervention led to disagreements between the mayor and the council’s administration, particularly because the court order required immediate enforcement and the city was under pressure to demonstrate compliance.

“We were insisting that we act sooner on the mandamus, because first of all, we

had to file documents in the court by today (Monday).

And we wanted to be able to say that we did carry out the order of the court,” Nelson said.

“Part of the conversation with his Worship and the vendors, we could not execute our duties yesterday,” she noted.

Despite the delay, Nelson made it clear that the court order remains in force and that the council would be returning to the area to enforce it.

Nelson also addressed concerns about the legal implications of the delay, noting that the council was still required to meet a court-imposed filing deadline.

“We couldn’t defer the filing because the court gave us until today to do the filing. So we were able to file some responses,” she explained. “However, what we initially wanted to file to say that the area is clear, we were unable to do that.”

She expressed hope that by the next court appearance, scheduled for January

9, 2026, the council would be able to confirm full compliance. However, she acknowledged that any delay in enforcement could be interpreted as a failure to act.

“So even when we turn up at court on the 9th, I want to be able to tell the court that we did carry out the order of the court,” Nelson said. “As it currently stands, it doesn’t have an effect on the court order unless it proceeds past the 9th of January.”

“As long as the court order is issued, we’re expected to act on it immediately,” she said. “It can be inter-

preted that the court order is being floated, which is not what we were doing. We were attempting to enforce that order.”

Prior notice

The Town Clerk further revealed that vendors had been given prior notice to vacate the area, with that notice expiring on December 27, prompting the attempted removal on December 28.

“We did give notice to the vendors for them to remove, and that notice expired on the 27th. Hence our reason for trying to clear that area yesterday,” she said.

When asked whether Mayor Mentore had since revised his decision, Nelson said no further discussions had taken place.

“I have not had any discussion with the mayor today, so I’m unable to see if he has revised that decision,” she said. “However, to the best of my knowledge, that has not been revised, but I will still be going ahead this weekend and try to have that area cleared.”

Efforts to contact Mayor proved futile as calls by this publication went unanswered.

Photographer on $1M bail for alleged $153M theft D

ays after being arrested for an alleged $153 million theft over a five-year period, 37-year-old Quincy Baird, a photographer from Plantation "B," Herstelling, East Bank Demerara (EBD), was granted $1 million bail when he appeared at the Georgetown Magistrate's Court on Monday. Baird, who was charged with larceny by clerk or servant, was accused of stealing the money from One Communications Guyana Inc. between July 1, 2021, and February 18, 2025. It was reported that on December 23, 2025, the suspect was contacted in relation to the allegation, during

which he was arrested and escorted to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) Headquarters, where he was interrogated. On Monday, he appeared before acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty and was not required to plead to the indictment. Nevertheless, he was granted bail and will make his next court appearance on February 11, 2026.

As conditions for bail, the accused was required to lodge his passport with the court, have no contact with any One Communications Guyana Inc. employee and report every second Friday of the month to the CID Headquarters.

End game… …for Mad Maduro?

Stumbling into Miraflores Palace after the untimely death of Chávez due to cancer in 2013, the ex-bus driver had to face the might of the US against which Chávez had practically declared war against!! Which was to impose conditions on the US oil majors’ profit that all except Chevron found unacceptable – especially ExxonMobil!!

So, he’s survived assassination attempts; coup attempts; two democratic losses at the polls; Venezuelan oil sanctions; sanctions against himself and his family; a US$5M bounty; mercenaries trying to foster a rebellion; and now the largest naval blockade ever, in the Western Hemisphere. With one-quarter of the entire US Navy floating off Venezuela’s Caribbean coast!! As a result, the Venezuelan economy imploded and more than onequarter of the population fled the country!! The 100,000 that ended up in our country ain’t even the tip of THAT iceberg!!

So, most folks thought that this time Trump was gonna use his ultimate weapon – a US invasion to literally kick Mad Maduro out of the country!! He’d created a justification by insisting that Mad Maduro had actually already declared war against America as head of a narco-smuggling Cartel de los Soles, that killed thousands of Americans with drugs smuggled into the US!! They’d already done a dry run when they’d invaded Panama in 1989 and ejected Noriega for trial in the US!!

So, what’s been holding back this doomsday scenario from unfolding since August – the beginning of Operation Southern Spear?? Well, it would seem that based on his actions in other theatres, Trump doesn’t want to commit American troops into battle since that means some of them might have to return stateside in body bags!! Even tiny Panama needed 26,000 US troops of which twenty-three died along with three civilians. The Panamanian 202 civilian and 314 military deaths were collateral damage.

With Venezuela’s ten-times more powerful forces in all domains – land, sea, air and cyberspace – looks like the US military brain trust figure that the Venezuelan war of attrition doctrine would inflict unacceptable US casualties.

So, what’s the end game?? To figure that out, we gotta see what’s different in the US actions in this go around a regime change!! And it’s the oil blockade now coupled with the seizure of tankers with Venezuelan oil!!

Even with all the American efforts in the last year, Venezuelan oil production had slowly inched up to almost 1 million BPD. One-third of its peak Chavista levels – but enough to stabilize the (admittedly devastated) economy.

With the blockade however, everything is unravelling and if kept up there’s gonna be no hope of a recovery.

Farmers renew calls for long-term drainage fixes …report crop losses

esidents and farmers in Black Bush Polder (BBP), Region Six (East BerbiceCorentyne) are once again raising concerns about long-standing drainage deficiencies, after several sections of the agricultural area were inundated following heavy rainfall over the weekend.

Large expanses of farmland were left underwater after intense showers overwhelmed internal drains and canals, causing water to back up into cultivation areas and nearby access dams.

In several sections, fields appeared submerged for hours, with young rice and cash crops visibly affected.

Farmers said that while heavy rainfall contributed to the flooding, the situation was worsened by persistent drainage challenges that

ready reported losses, with some fields remaining waterlogged long enough to threaten crop survival. Cash crop farmers, in particular, expressed concern that prolonged flooding could wipe out vegetables and shortterm crops that are highly sensitive to excess moisture.

According to farmers, the problem is not limited to rainfall alone but also relates to how drainage infrastructure is managed and maintained across the scheme. They have called for more consistent desilting, monitoring of water flow, and stronger oversight of drainage operations to prevent recurring flooding during periods of heavy rain.

celerate the removal of excess water from affected areas. He noted that pumps were operating at several key locations, including Adventure and Eversham, with additional units being mobilised to assist farmers directly in their fields.

Mustapha also disclosed that teams from the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority (NDIA); the Guyana Rice Development Board (GRDB); the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) and the Guyana Livestock Development Authority (GLDA) have been dispatched to assess the extent of the flooding and document losses.

Farmers have welcomed the presence of technical teams, but insist that longterm solutions are urgently needed.

“Every year is the same thing; when the rain fall heavy, the water can’t move fast enough,” one rice farmer said, noting the need for lasting drainage solutions.

Rice farmers say they lose crops this time of the year annually as a result of flooding.

Mustapha acknowledged that drainage management remained a critical issue and warned against interference with drainage structures, noting that improper handling or tampering could worsen flooding during periods of intense rainfall. He said authorities would be working with BBP Water Users’ Associations and the BBP Neighbourhood Democratic Council (NDC) to strengthen monitoring and enforcement.

In addition to emergency drainage works, Mustapha pointed to broader measures being pursued to protect farmers from climate-related losses. These include the agricultural insurance pro-

gramme covering rice farmers, supported through a partnership involving UPL and Mutual Life Insurance, which is intended to provide compensation when crops are damaged by extreme weather.

He explained that weather stations were already in

place in the area and that assessments were underway to determine eligibility for assistance under the insurance framework.

Despite the challenges, Mustapha expressed optimism that with pumps operating and water levels gradually receding, condi-

tions would stabilise in the coming days.

However, residents and farmers continue to stress that without long-term improvements to drainage infrastructure, flooding will remain a recurring threat to livelihoods in the Black Bush Polder.

ublic Works Minister Juan Edghill has revealed that in the future, commuters can effortlessly travel from Region Four (Demerara-Mahaica) to Bartica, Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni) in just two hours.

Travel between the coastland and Bartica is presently facilitated by boat (ferries or speedboats) along the Essequibo River; airplane; or a roughly five-hour drive along a dirt trail, passing through the Essequibo River via pontoon at the Sherima Crossing.

However, the government is working on another route to the Region Seven

town through Timehri.

Timehri will be connected with a small village called Sandhills, located in the Demerara River just opposite the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA). A modern road network will then be developed from Bartica to Sandhills.

“We are building out that road from TimehriSand Hills to connect with Bartica, it’s going to be a two-hour drive, I’ve done it already and components of the Demerara Harbour Bridge will be moved to link the Demerara River to make the TimehriSandhills connectivity easier,” Edghill said during a live broadcast on Monday.

President Dr Irfaan Ali had previously emphasised that this new road connection will open up thousands of new acres of land for housing, mining, and agricultural purposes.

Works have already commenced on this critical piece of infrastructure.

In fact, in October 2023, the Ministry of Public Works had revealed that 10 kilometers of roadway have been completed thus far on the Timehri, Sandhills to Bartica Road. The road extends from the western bank of the Demerara River (opposite Timehri) to Falmouth on the Essequibo River (opposite Bartica), a total of 42km.

on the day in question, a motorcar bearing registration number PAE 6337 was proceeding along the roadway when the driver swerved to avoid colliding with a herd of cows, but instead lost control, crashed into a concrete utility pole, and ended up in a nearby trench.

Cambridge and the occupant were pulled from the wreckage and taken to the Enmore Regional Hospital, where Cambridge was pronounced dead. An investigation into the fatal accident is underway.

Colin Anderson, also known as “Strongy” or “Biggs,” was on Monday charged with murder Contrary to Common Law in relation to the death of Michael John Benn, also called “Mikey.” The incident occurred on December 21. Anderson appeared on Monday, before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court.

that Anderson be remanded to prison. The matter was adjourned to February 12, 2026. Reports are that the 42-year-old gold miner from Charity, Essequibo Coast, was stabbed to death during an altercation at Arangoy Landing, Cuyuni River. Police in a release had said that on the day of the incident, Benn was at a liquor shop in the area when he became involved in an altercation with two males, during which he was stabbed in the chest. His body was later taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital.

Anderson was taken into custody while efforts were ongoing to apprehend the other suspect.

Youth, women, hinterland residents key in next 5-year housing plan …54% of allocations went to under-35s – Housing Minister

ousing Minister Collin Croal has reminded that youth will remain a central focus of the Government’s next five-year housing plan, revealing that over the past five years, 54 per cent of all housing allocations were made to young people aged 35 and under.

The disclosure was made via a social media post in which the Minister reflected on the housing component of President Dr Irfaan Ali’s December 17, Address to the Nation, outlining the Government’s Policy Agenda for Economic and Social Transformation over the next five years.

According to Croal, the upcoming five-year plan places a deliberate focus on youth, building on achievements recorded during the previous period. He noted that an analysis of housing allocations revealed that a significant 54 per cent were issued to persons under the age of 35, a development he described as encouraging. “You will also find moving forward as part of our vision, our next five years will therefore seek a focus on youth.

Now, interestingly, I want to refer back to what we have accomplished. What we have accomplished over

the last five years in those allocations, it’s an interesting scenario whereby for young people, and here I speak towards persons who are under 35, 35 and under, the percentage of allocations that were done for young people who are under 35, it’s 54 percent.”

The Minister explained that this shift signals improved opportunities for young people to achieve home ownership earlier in life, an aspiration that was often out of reach for previous generations due to financial constraints, limited access to mortgages, and long waiting periods for house lot allocations.

These challenges, he said, had caused many individuals to lose hope of owning their own homes.

Women

Croal further highlighted that despite the allocation of more than 50,000 house lots during the last period, demand for housing remains high, with eligible applicants continuing to submit requests daily.

In addition to youth, the Minister emphasised that women, particularly single mothers, remain a key focus of the housing programme.

He disclosed that of the approximately 53,000 allo-

cations made, over 43 per cent were granted to women. Based on analyses of housing applications, Croal said the majority of applicants are female, a trend he noted reflects the ongoing empowerment of women and the evolving social and economic direction of the country.

31-year-old taxi driver of Wisroc Housing Scheme, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice) was on Monday arrested with a quantity of cannabis at One Mile Turn, SoesdykeLinden Highway.

Police stated that ranks, acting on information received, conducted an operation that led to the interception of a motorcar being driven by the suspect.

During the operation, a search was conducted on the suspect and on the vehicle, during which a salt bag containing several bulky parcels with ganja was found.

The suspect was escorted to the Timehri Police Station along with the suspected cannabis, which was weighed and amounted to 8.903 kilograms. The suspect remains in custody pending charges.

Shifting focus to green spaces, the Minister said that every functional recreational facility will include designated green areas within communities. He added that residents can also expect improvements in clean water and sanitation through coordinated efforts involving the ministry responsible for utilities and the Local Government Ministry. He further emphasised that drainage and road infrastructure remain a major priority, particularly as communities continue to call for improved road networks. “When we talk about what a community should look like, we will see enhanced social

services and modern economic and social services to provide access to our citizens, I know many of our communities have been asking for enhanced roads.

We have already started it.

Every community can see the benefit of a proper road network,” he noted.

In addition to green spaces, the Minister said community designs will also incorporate investments to support commercial activities, along with the enhancement of markets through the Ministry of Local Government. “So, in addition to green space, we will also have, as part of our design, investment for commercial activities, as well as enhancement of markets,” he said.

He underscored that these initiatives are aimed at improving the quality of life for residents across all communities.

“We are looking forward to ensuring a better quality of life for persons living in our housing schemes, in older areas, and in the communities to come,” he said.

He assured that these plans will form part of the Government’s mandate moving forward, noting that infrastructure development under the Ministry of Housing will continue to play a central role.

“Infrastructure under the Ministry of Housing will continue to play a great role,” he added, referring specifically to community infrastructure in areas where housing allocations have already been made.

28-year-old man of Bee Hive, East Coast Demerara (ECD), has been charged in connection with a firearm incident at Retrieve Hard Court, Mackenzie, Linden, Region 10 (Upper Demerara-Berbice).

On Monday, Kevin Adams appeared via Zoom before Magistrate Rushell Liverpool, at the Linden Magistrate’s Court. He was charged for unlaw-

ful possession of a firearm without a licence contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearm Act, Chapter 16:05; possession of ammunition without a licence, Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearm Act, Chapter 16:05 and discharging a loaded firearm within 100 yards of a public way, Section 153(1)(iii) of the Summary Jurisdiction (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:02.

Police on duty at the

venue on Saturday reported observing a firearm being discharged. Adams was intercepted and, during a search, officers allegedly found a .32 Taurus pistol, a magazine, and 10 live .32 rounds in his possession.

He was arrested and taken into custody along with the firearm and ammunition.

No injuries were reported from the incident.

When the charges were read, Adams pleaded not guilty to all charges and was remanded to prison.

He is scheduled to return to court on January 13, 2026.

Gold miner stabbed to death in Pomeroon River P

olice in Regional Division Two are investigating a murder following the death of a 25-year-old of Wakapao, Lower Pomeroon River, Region Two (PomeroonSupenaam).

Dead is Nicholas Fredericks. Reports are that the incident occurred on Monday about 02:30h at

Wakapao Village. According to Police, Fredericks, a gold miner, had attended a community event on Sunday night into Monday morning where an altercation reportedly took place. Shortly afterward, he was found lying on the ground with what appeared to be multiple stab wounds.

Fredericks was trans-

ported to the Wakapao Health Centre, where a doctor on duty pronounced him dead on arrival. His body has since been taken to the Suddie Public Hospital Mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

An 18-year-old gold miner has been arrested and is currently assisting Police with the investigation.

Bridge at Kurupukari Crossing to be constructed in current 5-year mandate – Edghill A

s works continue on the Linden– Lethem all-weather road, Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill has assured that a bridge at the Kurupukari Crossing will be constructed within the current five-year term.

“We've already built out the bridges [along the Linden-Lethem trail]. The first phase of the road is under construction. The second phase of the road is being negotiated. The third and fourth phases of that road is under active consideration. The bridge across the Kurupukari is under active consideration and will be built out in this five-year term,” Edghill said during a live broadcast on Monday.

The construction of a bridge at the Kurupukari Crossing was first announced by President Dr Irfaan Ali while on the campaign trail. At present, vehicles travelling to and from Lethem must line up to cross the Essequibo River via a pontoon at the Kurupukari Crossing.

moves to transform the existing Linden–Lethem dirt trail into an all-weather roadway, the proposed 600-metre bridge is expected to significantly improve the travel experience by cre-

The Linden–Lethem project has been divided into several phases, with work on the first phase, from Linden to Mabura, al-

ready progressing. The government has stated that once completed, the project will reduce travel time between Linden and Lethem from more than 12 hours to approximately four hours,

a development expected to greatly enhance trade with neighbouring Brazil.

This, Edghill emphasised, will create tremendous opportunities for citizens in those areas.

“You know what that means? There will be need for more restaurants, more service centres, hotels and motels so that truck drivers will be able to get stops, to get rest, to continue. Heavy duty vehicle mechanics to service these trucks if they have challenges while moving, gas stations, communities along that route will be able to make investments for greater economic activity,” he outlined.

Linden, in particular, the minister noted, is poised to benefit significantly, especially with works progressing on the new US$35 million Wismar-MacKenzie Bridge.

Skilled workers to benefit from expanded construction in 2026

he expansion of Government-led housing construction is set to create more training and employment opportunities for skilled workers, as demand continues to rise for carpenters, masons, plumbers, and electricians, according to Housing Minister Collin Croal.

The Minister has recently highlighted a growing demand from citizens seeking turnkey houses, rather than just land allocations. He emphasised that the Government is revising its work programme to meet these needs, with construction in identified areas set to begin in 2026 and engagement with responses from the Expression of Interest (EOI) process already planned.

Explaining his point

that the expansion of Government-led housing construction is set to create more training, he mentioned that over 268 responses were received from the EOI for house construction.

The Minister noted that the construction sector has already absorbed a large portion of the workforce, and there remained strong demand for skilled tradespeople. He added that skilled carpenters, masons, plumbers, and electricians have ample opportunities at ongoing construction sites.

He stated, The construction sector has taken up a large volume of the workforce, and there is still demand for skilled workers.

I have yet to find a skilled carpenter, mason, plumber, or electrician unable to find

work at our construction sites. This also presents an opportunity for more training to prepare workers for the increasing demand as housing construction expands.

To underscore the scale of the housing initiative, approximately 75 homes are set to be handed over in early 2026 under the Yarrowkabra Homestead Programme along the Linden-Soesdyke Highway. A report from the Department of Public Information (DPI) noted that more than 250 homes are currently under construction in the initial phase of the project. Croal added during a Facebook broadcast, Right now 25 [houses] are already completed, and another 50 will be handed over within two weeks.

Greek officers in Guyana to provide handson training for "MV Konawaruk 1899" crew

reek maritime officers are currently in Guyana providing hands-on training to crews of the Transport and Harbours Department (TH&D) on the newly-acquired ferry, "MV Konawaruk 1899".

The training comes shortly after the vessel’s inaugural voyage on the Parika-to-Supenaam route on December 19, 2025.

Originally named "MV ARIS IV", the ferry was acquired from Greece at a cost of just under US$5 million. It is Guyana’s first double-ended ferry and has the capacity to carry 81 cars or 19 Europeantype trucks, as well as more than 300 passengers.

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Retired) Mark Phillips, who delivered the feature address at the commissioning ceremony, highlighted the strategic importance of the vessel for the country’s transport network. He noted

that the acquisition reflected the Government’s commitment to integrating land, river, and air transport to ensure connectivity for communities where roads end and rivers begin.

“Look at the growing lines that you see on a daily basis at Supenaam and at Parika.

More trucks, more cars, more people. That line is not a problem; it is a portrait of a nation on the move,” the Prime Minister had said.

He emphasised that the "MV Konawaruk 1899" would reduce congestion, improve efficiency, and support the movement of perishable goods, boosting trade between Regions Two (Pomeroon-Supenaam) and Three (Essequibo IslandsWest Demerara).

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill also stressed the significance of the ferry, noting that it addresses long-standing capacity

challenges on the Essequibo Coast route. He added that a second vessel from Greece was expected to arrive soon to strengthen services on the Northwest District route, which is currently served by the Indian-built "MV MA Lisha".

Director General of the Maritime Administration (MARAD), Stephen Thomas, described the commissioning of the "MV Konawaruk 1899" as a clear signal of the Government’s commitment to developing a modern, stable, and internationally compliant maritime transport system.

The 73-metre ferry, with a design draft of two metres suitable for the depths of the Essequibo River, arrived in Guyana earlier this month after a voyage of more than 5000 nautical miles from Greece.

Her previous Renaissance world tour brought in about more than $579m.

Delivering a digital Guyana – 2 new platforms signal modern governance in action G

overnment services are moving from walk-ins and long lines to appointment-based services and real-time request tracking, thanks to new digital platforms developed by the Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Ministry.

Three months into its second term, the Government has brought onstream two of the four much-awaited digital platforms that will define the way in which citizens access Government services.

The online platforms include the Skills Connect app that has been developed locally by the National Data Management Authority (NDMA) to bridge the gap between job seekers and job providers and help strengthen the labour market.

“The platform aims to empower skilled and semiskilled labourers by providing them with employment opportunities readily at the click of a button from their mobile devices,” Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation Minister Zulfikar Ally explained in a Department of Public Information (DPI) report.

It also enables business-

es and individuals to find services and labour as required. According to the Minister, Skills Connect is active countrywide, with all registered profiles vetted and verified by the Ministry.

From carpentry, landscaping, and plumbing to personal services such as nail technicians, the application offers a wide range of services.

Meanwhile, via the GovConnect app, citizens have access to services by booking appointments conveniently. This means reducing wait times and uncertainty around access to services. Users will be able to choose convenient dates and times, receive confirmation, and be assured of service on arrival.

According to the DPI report, this undertaking will be implemented across all Ministries of Government within the next two years.

“Imagine no long lines and unpredictable changes to Government services will be faced by you. Every citizen will have equal access to all Government services without any discrimination.

You can expect certainty and predictability in your access to Government services,

a promise made by your Government and a promise that will be kept,” Minister Ally confidently affirmed.

A third mobile application, Citizens Connect, will also come on stream in the coming weeks. The app will enable citizens to raise complaints and concerns directly with Government agencies using their mobile devices, thereby removing the need for in-person visits.

Similarly, iGov, an AIintegrated interface, will be launched soon and will serve

SkillsConnect aims to bridge the gap between job seekers and job providers

as Guyana’s official digital assistant for Government services. Available 24/7, iGov will answer questions, guide citizens through application processes (licence, etc) and provide information on available services without human intervention.

Digital transformation is underway in every industry, including health (telemedicine, electronic medical records and etc); education

(Digital School); financial (online banking); and human services (iMatter app) among other initiatives.

“These initiatives are proof that digital Guyana is a practical, achievable roadmap, and not a distant vision,” the Minister stated.

Importantly, it not only unlocks talent and supports frontier technologies, but is part of a commitment by the People’s Progressive Party/

Civic (PPP/C) to build an inclusive digital society where every Guyanese person can participate and prosper in an increasingly digital world.

In fact, by 2030, every Guyanese will have in their possession an electronic identification card (E-ID) that will allow them to open bank accounts remotely, and secure loans and mortgages, among other functions.

Jamaican man found dead T&T ex-national at crash scene was murdered footballer gunned down I T

nformation has now indicated that, contrary to earlier information which suggested that Christopher Clarke died from injuries sustained in a motor vehicle crash on Saturday morning, he was in fact the victim of a homicide. On Saturday about 8:00am, Clarke, who was driving a Nissan Tiida mo-

tor car, had hit a utility pole, and the vehicle subsequently overturned.

He was found lying on the ground by firefighters who were called to the scene.

He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

However subsequently, according to an officer familiar with the investigation,

Clarke was actually stabbed prior to his death.

“We are treating this as a homicide,” the officer said.

Clarke, it is being reported, had been stabbed by an unknown assailant and was in the process of driving himself to the hospital when the vehicle collided with the utility pole. (Jamaica Observer)

Families urged to stop hiding children with disabilities F

amilies who have children with disabilities are being urged to end the practice of hiding them, as no one should feel ashamed of the circumstances life places before them.

The appeal came from St James Municipal Corporation CEO Naudia Crosskill during a Christmas treat at Mustard Seed Communities’ Blessed Assurance children’s home in St James which cares for adults and children with disabilities.

“What I find also is that many times when persons have children with disability, they hide them, and some persons maybe leave them in the hospital,” Crosskill lamented at the December 20 treat hosted by Janet Richards Foundation in partnership with Usain Bolt Foundation.

“But you also have some very strong persons who keep their children, and what I find is that when you have an issue, whether it is a child with a disability, a family member with a disability, when you start talking about it, you recognise that there are a lot of persons among us who we know very closely, who are also going through the same situation. So there is no need for us to be ashamed of whatever situation we might find ourselves in,” Crosskill added.

She commended the organisers for their benevolence, praising the Janet Richards Foundation for its long-standing relationship with the home and its commitment to understanding the real needs of Mustard Seed Communities. She also reminded the children that they were valued, loved, and deserving of dignity, regardless of disability.

he usual hustle and bustle continued as normal along Charlotte Street, Port-ofSpain, yesterday, hours after a shooting on Saturday night that claimed the life of a former national footballer and left two others injured.

Police said Tekay Hoyce, 27, of Richardson Lane, Laventille, was pursued and shot multiple times by two gunmen around 6.25 pm on Saturday.

The former Under-17 footballer died on the pavement, crouched in a corner against the statue of a Chinese dragon. Hoyce was shot in the left shoulder, upper chest, and head. The gunmen then turned their weapons on passers-by, creating a diversion to escape in a waiting vehicle.

The shooting sent shoppers, vendors and visitors fleeing for their lives.

Senior police officials rushed to the scene after getting the report, even as some members of the public jostled one another to take pictures of the dead man so they could post them on social media.

The ensuing chaos was later uploaded online by several people, which is how many of Hoyce’s relatives and friends were alerted to his murder.

wound.

Senior police officials yesterday described the shooting as “a crime of opportunity” but were unwilling to say much more. They noted, though, that Hoyce was well known to the police.

Guardian Media was, however, told the police are bracing for more incidents as they expect reprisals.

Hoyce was the son of Brent “Big Brent” Miller, who was charged with the 2003 murder of Jillia Bowen and the attempted murder of expelled Jamaat-alMuslimeen members Salim “Small Slim” Rasheed and Adel Ghany, and six other related charges.

The conspiracy, it is alleged, occurred on June 4, 2003, when Bakr and other persons conspired at Citrine Avenue, Diamond Vale, Diego Martin, to murder Rasheed and Aubaidah.

Rasheed, Adel Ghani and Bowen were shot at as they sat on a bench at the MovieTowne cineplex at Invaders Bay in Mucurapo, shortly after 11.30 pm that same night.

nited States President Donald Trump said on Monday that the US had "hit" an area in Venezuela where boats are loaded with drugs, marking the first known time Washington has carried out land operations in Venezuela since a pressure campaign began against President Nicolás Maduro's Government.

"There was a major explosion in the dock area where they load the boats up with drugs," Trump said.

"We hit all the boats, and now we hit the area... it's the implementation area. That's where they implement, and that is no longer around."

It was not immediately clear what target was hit nor which part of the US Government acted.

Asked if the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) had carried out the attack, Trump said: "I don't want to say that. I know exactly who it was, but I don't want to say who it was."

Trump has previously said that he has authorised the CIA to carry out covert operations in Venezuela.

On a radio show last week, Trump made vague comments about an apparent US operation against a "big facility" in Venezuela.

The CIA, the White House and the Pentagon have not publicly elaborated on those comments and declined to comment on questions posed

massive search is under way for fire officer Bruce Lezama, 46, who was abducted from his home in Arima, Trinidad over the weekend.

Lezama is based at the Ambulance Section North.

the President of the Fire Service Association Second Division, Keone Guy, said the Association was gravely concerned and was informing members and the national community that the officer was currently missing "under deeply-troubling circumstances".

The statement said Lezama was scheduled to report for duty on the evening

of December 27, but did not arrive.

"Subsequent checks by his family led to the discovery of his residence in Arima, with the door left open. His vehicle was later found abandoned.

t least 13 persons died and almost 100 were injured in a train derailment in Mexico's south-eastern Oaxaca region, the Mexican Navy said.

The train, which was travelling between the Gulf of Mexico and the Pacific Ocean, was carrying 241 passengers and nine crew members.

A total of 98 were injured, of whom 36 were being treated in hospital, the Navy said.

ussia accused Ukraine on Monday of trying to attack President Vladimir Putin's residence in northern Russia, although it provided no evidence to back up an assertion that Kyiv dismissed as baseless and designed to undermine peace negotiations.

The angry exchanges – including a statement by Russia that it was reviewing

its stance in negotiations in response to the attack – dealt a new blow to prospects for peace in Ukraine.

US President Donald Trump said Putin had told him about the alleged attack in a phone call on Monday morning, which had angered him. Still, Trump repeated his belief that a peace deal may be near.

"It's one thing to be offensive," Trump told report-

ers. "It's another thing to attack his house. It's not the right time to do any of that.

And I learned about it from President Putin today. I was very angry about it."

India looking to cap off successful year with clean sweep over Sri Lanka

India’s women have been dominant throughout the series despite some sloppy fielding

fter three low scores, three tosses lost and three heavy defeats, Sri Lanka gave hosts India more of a fight in the fourth T20 International (T20I) on Sunday when they finally got to chase a target instead of setting one. They got somewhat close thanks to contributions from batters apart from Chamari Athapaththu.

With their confidence running a little higher, they would want to sign off from this five-match tour with one win as the preparations for the T20 World Cup, which is less than six months away, heat up.

India have been clinical all through the series – with their share of luck, having won the first three tosses – in restricting Sri Lanka to totals under 130 and getting home with at least five overs and seven wickets in hand. That presents Sri Lanka the opportunity to test India's middle and lower order today, but with the gargantuan task of going past the duo of Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma, who put up India's biggest partnership for any wicket to set up the hosts' highest T20I total.

ritish heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua has been injured in a car crash in Nigeria, which killed two other persons.

The former world champion was travelling in a vehicle that collided with a stationary truck on a major expressway near Lagos.

Photos from the scene showed the 36-year-old being helped out of the back seat of a black SUV, surrounded by what appears to be broken glass.

Five adult men were involved in the crash, Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said. Two died, two survived "unhurt", and Joshua was taken to hospital with minor injuries.

Local officials said the two persons who died were "male foreign nationals", according to preliminary reports. The crash took place on the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway around 12:00 local time (11:00 GMT) on Monday.

The incident involved two vehicles: a black Lexus and a stationary red commercial truck.

The FRSC said the Lexus was "suspected to be travelling beyond the legally-prescribed speed limit", based on preliminary findings.

It is unclear exactly when or where the video was taken.

Local Police Commissioner Lanre Ogunlowo said an investigation into the accident had been ordered.

A relative of Joshua in Nigeria, who asked not to be named, told the BBC that news of the crash came as a "shock" to the family.

They said they were hoping for his "speedy recovery" and offered prayers for those who died in the crash.

The family member confirmed that Joshua was travelling from Lagos to Ogun State when the accident happened. His family had been expecting him to join them in Sagamu for New Year celebrations.

The boxer's family is well known in the town and traces its ancestry there across several generations.

Buxton set the tempo from early, pressing aggressively, winning the midfield battles and forcing errors as Golden Grove struggled to settle under the sustained pressure. Even when Golden Grove threatened in flashes, Buxton’s sharper finishing and stronger organisation ensured

they remained in control, pulling away as the match wore on to confirm a deserved semifinal place.

The night’s climax belonged to Trafalgar, however, as the battle-tested side showed both attacking quality and composure under pressure to survive Cougars and march on.

With the latest round complete, the semi-final match-ups are now confirmed: Paradise FC – fresh from their

emphatic 4-1 win over Ithaca – will meet Trafalgar in what is shaping up as a blockbuster showdown, while Buxton Stars will face Airy Hall in the other semi-final.

Allicock, Couchman & Joshi dominate GCF's year-end chess tournaments

IDE Master (FM) Rawle Allicock won the Guyana Chess Federation (GCF)sponsored End of Year Rapid, while Kyle Couchman took first place in the Blitz segment of the chess competitions held last Saturday and Sunday, respectively, at the School of the Nations in Georgetown.

Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Aditi Joshi clinched the Best Female prize in both competitions.

Allicock played unbeaten in the End of Year Rapid competition, delivering a commanding, unbeaten performance to finish with 6.5 points. His near-perfect run was only tempered by a draw against second-place finisher Couchman (5.5 points) in Round 5, while Keron Sandiford secured third place with 5 points.

Couchman, after performing flawlessly in the first six rounds, lost to Candidate Master (CM) Sachin Pitamber in the last round. Pitamber, having opted to play in the Open section, secured the fourthplace spot in the Open Category with 5 points.

Lusianna Farlot took

home the Best Female prize for the U-20 category after achieving the top score of 3 points among the junior females. Excellent performances also came from Kim Shing Chong, who also earned 5 points, and Alexander Zhang and Aiden Tinnie, who both concluded with 4.5 points.

draw against Nicholas Zhang, but his standout performance came in round five, where he secured a crucial victory over FM Allicock. He took second place with 8 points, while Matthew Singh earned third with 6.5 points, showing remarkable tenacity by losing only to the top two finishers.

WCM Joshi once again secured the Best Female prize, delivering a consis-

tent performance to finish with 5 points. Among the other standout performers were Sandiford, who earned 6 points, followed closely by Joshua Gopaul with 5.5. Alexander and Nicholas Zhang both concluded their runs on 5 points, while Kishun Puran (4.5) and Jessica Callendar (4.0) delivered solid performances to round out the top ten.

Cash prizes totalling $159,000 were handed out to the top three winners and best female in the Open and U-20 Categories in the Rapid Tournament, while the top three placements and best female in the Blitz Competition received awards.

he Guyana Bodybuilding and Fitness Federation (GBBFF) has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Culture, Youth and Sport Ministry for its unwavering support throughout the year, particularly in the successful staging of the highly-anticipated Clash of the Titans: Mr Guyana 2025 National Seniors Competition.

In a statement, the Federation acknowledged the significant contributions of subject Minister Charles Ramson Jr, whose dedication has played a pivotal role in elevating the sport of bodybuilding in Guyana to new

heights.

"We are grateful for his commitment, which has made a lasting impact on our athletes and the community," the Federation stated.

In one of the most thrilling encounters, Bomb Squad edged out Team Cruel in a pulsating 6-4 victory. Kayo Fernandez was the standout performer, netting a superb hat-trick in the 4th, 6th, and 25th minutes.

Felipe Borge opened the scoring early in the 3rd minute, while Reshawn Ritch (8th) and Julio Cesar (12th) added to Bomb Squad's tally.

Team Cruel kept the pressure on through Tyrice Dennis, who struck twice in the 16th and 24th minutes. Ian Dooker (3rd) and another Dennis goal in the 29th got them closer,

but Bomb Squad held firm to secure progression.

Road Warriors sent a powerful statement with a commanding 11-1 demolition of Team Family. The attacking onslaught was led by Matheus Henrique, who registered four goals in the 16th, 30th, 37th, and 39th minutes.

Arckson added a brace (7th and 9th), while De Souza (5th), Dionathas Pereira (10th), Daniel Da Silva (17th), Matheus De Souza (18th), and Wesley Ferreira (21st) all found the back of the net.

Team Family's lone response came from Sealon Sue in the 20th minute.

Another goal-filled clash saw Bent Street A overpower Kingston 6-3. Bent Street A showcased balanced scoring with goals from Sean Taylor (6th), Tyler Lyle (11th), Michael Oie (27th, 38th), and a brace from Beveney McGarrell (29th, 35th).

Kingston fought valiantly

through Troy Andrew (4th), Simon Emanuel (39th), and Ron Abrams (40th), but ultimately fell short.

The final quarter-final match-up featured Sparta Boss defeating Stabroek Ballers 5-2. Sparta Boss displayed composure and control with goals from Curtez Kellman (5th), Jobe Caesar (16th), Omari Glasgow (23rd), Daren Nikes (35th), and Ryan Hackett (39th). Stabroek Ballers responded through Lionel Holder (5th) and Ezikel Frank-David (18th), but Sparta Boss proved too strong down the stretch.
