Race walkers go after Chanderpaul, Ramlakhan, Jainarine help ECCCC level series top prize as CS&TC presents 10K event
Members of the victorious Enmore team Half centuries from West Indies Under-19 batsman Tagenarine Chanderpaul and the talented Vishwanauth Ramlakhan, backed up by a fine bowling display from 16year-old Satesh Jainarine guided host Enmore Community Centre Cricket Club (ECCCC) to a 40-run victory over St Cuthbert’s Mission in the return fixture last Sunday. St Cuthbert’s Mission started the game with the psychological advantage having won the first encounter by 70 runs at home in March, but by the end of the day ECCCC were able to square the two-match friendly series with a respectable performance. ECCCC batted first in front of a fair size crowd and posted a challenging 213-5 from the allotted 30 overs on a lightning fast outfield. Opener Chanderpaul top
scored with an attractive 85, while Ramlakhan supported well with a fluent 53 and Amir Khan chipped in with 24. All rounder Timothy Andrews claimed 2-28. St Cuthbert’s Mission responded with 173-7 in 30 overs. Andrews and R. Daniels were the visitors leading batsmen with 28 each. Off-spinner Jainarine bagged 4-18. At the presentation ceremony, Chanderpaul was voted best batsman, Jainarine best bowler, while Andrews also received a trophy for his all-round effort. The ECCCC will be in action again on Sunday against Bravado in a 30-over game starting at 11:30 hours at the Enmore Community Centre ground. The ECCCC squad reads; Bheemraj Ramkelawan (captain), Chaitram Ramlall, Sheik Mohamed, Javed
Mohamed, Vishwanauth Ramlakhan, Ranjeet Hiralall, Nandram Ganesh, Satesh Jainarine, Jacob Persaud, Mark Persaud, Mark Malone, Navindra Gobin, Naresh Persaud, Safraz Ali and N. Basdeo. Meanwhile, young cricketers of the ECCCC will be exposed to a training seminar today with former West Indies all-rounder and head coach and Guyana Amazon Warriors Roger Harper from 10:30 hours at the club. When the Cavalier Sports and Tour Club (CS&TC) staged its last 10k race walk event around the Melanie Damishana ECD community two weeks ago, Jamal Janeere turned in a brilliant performance to take the top spot in the men’s category, while seventy nine years old Thomas Rouse emulated that feat to take the honours in the veterans’ category. The walkers will be at it once again, each attempting to replicate the feat while those that lagged behind in the last race will be anxious to improve their performances when the CS&TC stages a similar event tomorrow morning. Activities would be conducted in collaboration with the Green Path
that they are working hand in hand with the national Rugby Association to improve the Rugby field. “The level of the land here is very low so the first thing we have to do is to seal off the field so that it will not be flooded easily”, he added. Fernandes said that there are also plans to raise the height of the Rugby as well as the Hockey fields, but due to the high cost involved they have to take it step by step. He indicated that the park is now open for longer periods due to the lights which were recently installed and they are looking at the possibility of setting up surveillance cameras which will help to facilitate longer training periods for athletes.
From page 35 withdraw from the French Open. He returned to become Britain’s first male Wimbledon singles champion since 1936, but struggled on the hard courts and lost in the US Open quarter-finals. Murray tweeted on Thursday: “Having operation on Monday. Will let everyone know how it goes. I’ll be ‘back’ stronger.” The problem, which Murray has suffered for two years, affects a nerve in his lower back which can send pain shooting down his hip and upper leg. It appears to cause him more problems when he plays on clay and the harder surfaces than on grass courts. He had pain-killing injections before the 2012 French Open and withdrew from this year’s Rome Masters midway through a match against Marcel Granollers. After taking medical advice, he chose not to play at Roland Garros in May. There were signs of discomfort at the US Open, but he only took the decision to have surgery after last weekend’s Davis Cup tie on clay in Croatia. He admitted his back was sore after last Friday’s opening singles victory over Borna Coric. Murray had been scheduled to play three more events in Asia this season, including the Shanghai Masters, then the Paris Masters before heading to the ATP World Tour Finals at London’s O2 Arena from 4-11 November. There is no suggestion that next year’s schedule will be affected and it is hoped he will kick off his regular pre-season training block in Miami in the middle of November. Jamie Baker, Murray’s friend and former Davis Cup teammate, said: “Andy does have a knack of always looking in pain, but this is something he feels is the right thing to do and we have to trust him. “We can’t underestimate how tough emotionally the last 12 months has been, so it’s understandable if he’s a little bit burned out, and this break will give him the best chance of picking up more major titles next year.”
