For several years before, several Indian-Guyanese groups had been agitating for a public holiday to commemorate the arrival of their ancestors to this land. It was contended that the holiday would assist in nation building by reminding the other groups making up the Guyanese mosaic of their impact and contribution to this land. This was expected, in effect, to increase our social capital. The issue was debated extensively in the letters’ pagesandeditorialsofthenationalpressanddemonstrated that there were deep seated doubts of the motives of those demanding the holiday. Members of African groups especially felt that the commemoration was triumphalist and, by implication, devalued the contributions of other groups.
The issue was finally submitted to a Parliamentary Committeeandafterextensivewrittenandoralsubmissions from groups and individuals, it recommended that the day bedeclaredaholiday ThePNCdidnotparticipateineither the deliberations of the Committee or in the later ParliamentaryvoteontheCommittee’srecommendation. It objected to the presence of the then Minister of Home Affairsbutnotedthatithadnoproblemwiththeholidayto acknowledgethecontributionsof“IndoGuyanese”.
But somewhere between the recommendation and the Presidential approval, the holiday was declared and designated as “Arrival Day” It appeared that the government was looking to widen the significance of the day to encompass other groups that had also “arrived”. Maybe it was trying to expand the potential of the day to increase“socialcapital”.Inandofitself, therewasnothing wrong with the idea but the end-process was quite undemocraticsinceeverygroupthatmadesubmissionson the May 5 proposed holiday had designated it as “Indian ArrivalDay”.

What has happened since is that Arrival Day, just as had been the practice, is being commemorated exclusively by Indian-Guyanese. Under the David Granger Coalition administration there were deliberate efforts to have designated days for the Chinese and Portuguese —PortugueseArrivalDayonMay3rd,ChineseArrivalDay on January 12th. These were gestures of respect, and they were not unappreciated. The PPP government, since its return to power in 2020, has quietly folded all other observancesintotheoneMay5thaffair

DEAR
EDITOR,
TomyfellowGuyanese, Our nation stands at a perilous moment in its modern history The government of Venezuela has taken overt steps to violate our sovereignty, first through an alarming naval incursion into our Exclusive Economic Zone recently, and now with declared intentions to hold elections within Guyana’s sovereign territory, the Essequibo region. These acts represent not only a breach of international law and the authorityoftheInternational Court of Justice but also a direct threat to the peace, security, and territorial integrity of the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. What we do now, as a collective people, willdefineourfuture andechothroughtime. This is not a time for complacency, silence, or division. It is a time for clarity, courage, anddecisive national unity We must rise above partisan boundaries, personal grievances, and political posturing to come together with a singular purpose: to defend our land, our dignity, and our right to existinpeace. This is no longer about rhetoric or historical claims. Let us not underestimate thestakes.Thisisnotmerely a boundary dispute. It is an assault on the very idea of Guyana’s sovereignty What

We must unify, urgently and unequivocally, regardless of the prevailing social fractures and national mood of despair. We must divedeepwithinourbeings, summon the spirits of our forefathers, all of them, and findawaytospeakwithone voice, act with one purpose, and stand with one will, in these extant circumstances.

We celebrate and honour the immense contributions of East Indians to every facet of our national development
DEAREDITOR,
Today, as Guyana observes Arrival Day, the Alliance For Change joins with all Guyanese in
commemorating this important occasion. It is a day that marks the arrival of the first East Indian indentured labourers to British Guiana on May 5, 1838 — a date that holds deep meaning, particularly for the East Indian community whose ancestors began their journey on the WhitbyandtheHesperus.
Wecelebrateandhonour theimmensecontributionsof EastIndianstoeveryfacetof ournationaldevelopment— in agriculture, education, politics, religion, business, and culture. Their story is one of resilience and determination, of survival and success in the face of hardship. It is a story that helpedshapethesoulofthis nation and continues to influence our society in powerfulways.
But Arrival Day, while rootedinaspecifichistorical moment, mustbeunderstood within the wider context of
all those who came to these shores — and those who were already here We cannot mark this day meaningfully without also acknowledging the other peoples who contributed so significantly to the making of Guyana. Long before the arrival of indentured labourers, enslavedAfricans were brought to these lands under one of the most brutal systems known to humankind. They built the foundations of this country withtheirblood, theirsweat, and their stolen freedom. Their suffering was unique in its total denial of personhood, and the legacy of slavery still lives with us today
We also remember the Indigenous peoples — the first inhabitants of this land — whose existence predates colonisation and conquest, and whose stewardship of these lands stretches back centuries.
Theirpresencewasnever an arrival; it was an origin. Their rights, cultures, and lives must be continuously honoured and protected. In
the decades that followed emancipation, the Portuguese, Chinese, and freeAfricanscameunderthe system of indentureship, each bringing with them their own languages, traditions, skills, and hopes. Their labour and their contributions became essentialthreadsinthefabric of our shared national identity Itisimportant, especially today, to make a clear and honest distinction: while indentureship was exploitative, coercive, and deeply unjust, it cannot and must never be equated with slavery Slavery was a systemoftotalownershipof human beings, passed down from generation to generation, denyingeventhe mostbasicrights.
Indentureship, by contrast, though oppressive, functionedwithinadifferent structure, often under contractual terms, and did not carry the same permanence or absolute dehumanisation To acknowledge this difference is not to diminish anyone’s
pain or sacrifice. It is to respect the truth of each people’s journey and to ensurethatourhistoryistold with accuracy, dignity, and clarity
Arrival Day, then, is not j u s t a b o u t t h e commemoration of one group’spresenceinGuyana. It is a moment to celebrate the full spectrum of our ancestry — to honour the many who arrived, the few whoremained, andthemany morewhoendured.Itisaday toreflectonhowfarwehave come as a people forged in the crucible of migration, labour, injustice, endurance, andultimately—hope.
Aswemoveforward, the Alliance For Change remains committed to building a nation that respects the contributions of all its people and works tirelessly to ensure equity, inclusion, andjusticeforall.
HappyArrivalDaytoall Guyanese.
Maywecontinuetowalk together on this journey of unityandnationalrenewal.

The acid attack at Chateau Margot scarredmorethan those two children and their folks. When images of the alleged perps are broadcast, the nation has now added another scar to its already hugecollectionofsuch.
Heinous, poisonous, and felonious all belong, yet somehow seem not to be enough. Not enough to capture the naked ugliness that disgraces this country and its people from time to time. I am deeply troubled by this incident, if that was whatitwas.
There can never be any justification for such acts of madness. These are not random at all, but provide evidence of the deep-seated animosities that deform so many Guyanese, provoke bitterness.
When some are spurred tosuchactsofdepravedness, this country goes through still another episode of soul wringing and psychic
revulsion. Any civilized person would. I think that I am,soIamappalled. Whateverbookhastobe thrown at the alleged perps, letitbe, andwithnotapage missing. Indeed, there are thosestreetperpetrators, but to target deliberately two strangers, two young children at that, reeks of so muchmore.
Citizens are weighing whetheronechildinanother location was made into a sacrificialvictim.
I sift through thoughts that would not let go, that this acid attack in Chateau Margot may not have originated with, nor terminatedin, thehandiwork of the men in those gauzy images.
Meaning, that these two childrenwere, bytheluckof the draw, convenient targets of opportunity, hence, made into sacrificial victims in theirownright.
After all, the more barbarous the action in the
street or village, the higher the production waiting to be made out of it. Into this separatecauldron, therewas a steady stream of ready actors.
It is as if they were strainingattheleashforsuch a moment on the ground, followed by their own exhibitions, duly noted and properly recorded for public consumption today, for dredginguplater
Iregrethavingtosayso, butthisisthelevelofdistrust and cynicism that prevails. Some in this society never see some actions as too low, toooutofbounds, sotheygo for whatever serves their objectives. And that is no matter how much those possess the stinging substance of depraved indifference.
To be clear, who are the real perps in this obscene acid attack? It boggles the mind that there are those walking around, riding around, androamingaround,
with a mind firmly set on mischief embracing such horrors.
A container of acid for criminal purposes (and not just the criminal, but a word thatrhymeswithit)hasmore potencythatanopencanister of teargas used during official duty The latter is a passing development; the former is a lifelong trauma thathasitsownnightmares.
Rather miserably, Guyanese are forced to absorb one mystery from across the Demerara River that becomes more puzzling by the moment, and then another just outside the edgesofGeorgetown.
The immediate reaction of many boils down to this: how could they? My reaction is that, plus what elsecouldIbemissinginthis sordidstory?
Often, the random is not so random as it appears. What gives every indication of an incident that is spur of the moment is when
suspicion draws closer, castsafatteroutline.
What did the alleged perps gain for their efforts, other than their faces on surveillance videos, and a branding that singles them out as pariahs of a special kind?
I am purposely toning this down in the interests of my duty to all Guyanese, which spans from friend to self-appointedfoes.
Fortakestockofwhatis had from that mindless (maybe) acid attack. The acid splashed on those two youngsters might as well been splashed across that entire community, and then acrossthiscountry
It is that type of country Some things do not rub off, noraretheyeasilyremedied. Certainly, they are never forgotten, since some segments in Guyana have among the best memories thatIhaveeverencountered.
Worse, they are so swiftly and smoothly
marketable. For the usual. By the usual. Whoever seeks to declare their distance from the usual and traditional have the right to step forward and set themselvesapart.
I do so; unhesitatingly and unambiguously Minus mefromthatmass, fromthat madness.
Last,Iconcludethatwar has been declared on our children. Itisnotsurprising, giventhedeformednatureof some of those appointed to stand guard over them, be protectors of their youthful innocence.
In many respects, that is an acid attack all by itself, one of the crassest proportionsimaginable.

Trinidadian pathologist Dr Hubert Daisley has demanded a public apology from two Guyanese media outlets, accusing them of defaming his professional reputation in recent reports in relation to calls for a second autopsy on the body of 11-year-old Adriana Younge.
In a letter sent by his attorney, EusiAnderson, Dr Daisley expressed outrage overanarticlefirstpublished bytheGuyanaChronicleand republished by News Room GuyanaonMay2,2025.
On Monday a postmortem examination was conducted and determined that Adriana died by drowning. In addition to the toxicology test being pending, it was disclosed that the time of death was unable to be determined due t o t h e s t a t e o f decomposition.
Theforensicautopsywas conductedbyDr.Shubhakar Karra Paul, a pathologist fromBarbadosappointedby thegovernment.Inaddition, Adriana’s family had appointed Dr Gary L Collins, Chief Medical Examiner for the State of Delaware to observe and there was also a third pathologist Dr Glenn A. Rudner of Mount Sinai HospitalinNewYork.
AfterDr Daisley’sname was floated to give a fourth opinion on the autopsy, the localmediaentitiesreported that he had previously come under fire for an incorrect c a u s e o f d e a t h determination.
Thelawyer’sletterstated thatthemediaentitiesreport alleged that Dr Daisley had previously issued a public apology in 2013 after wrongly determining the cause of death in a highprofile case, mistakenly labeling it a murder rather than an asthma-related death.
The attorney described the claim as “defamatory” and “wildly inaccurate,” stating that his client Dr. Daisley had, in fact, correctlyidentifiedthedeath as asthma-related and had neverissuedanapology
“The distance between these words and truth is interplanetary at best. I do not mean Mars and Earththink Pluto and the Sun; or decidedly evil at worst,” the
Trinidadian pathologist, Dr. Hubert Daisley
attorney wrote in the letter
He further warned that unless a public apology and retraction are issued by 6 p.m. on May 6, legal action willfollow
“Your words, as published, are calculated to belittle, lie upon, defame a n d i n s u l t h i s unimpeachable character
You have until 6 pm on Tuesday, 6 May, 2025 to issue a public apology and retraction in print and online media or face the consequences of your defamatory publication in a courtoflaw,”itwasstated
“Myclientstoutlyrejects theunderlyingthemeofyour publication that he is not qualified as a Pathologist by the Medical Board,” the attorney added, while attaching permits showing Dr Daisley’s approval to practice medicine in Guyana.
He also highlighted Dr Daisley’s extensive career, noting that the pathologist has performed over 70,000 autopsies in 15 countries, published more than 100 academic articles, and has been recognised by the World Health Organization asanexpertinhisfield.
The lawyer letter’s also complained of the Guyana Chronicle using state resources to “besmirch” the reputation of what the attorneydescribedas“oneof the finest sons of Trinidad andTobago.”
Further, itwasstatedthat copiesofthecomplainthave beenforwardedtoCaribbean Community (CARICOM), as well as diplomatic missions in the United States, Canada, and the UnitedKingdom.
TheAllianceForChange (AFC) believes Guyana has reachedadangerouspointin history, with the flow of information being stagnated byagovernmenttaskedwith prudent management of a resource-richcountry
This has therefore sent off an alarm, with citizens increasingly questioning the p o l i c i e s o f t h e administration. Recently, the AFC Chairman, David Patterson cited the party’s support for legal action that is being pursuedbyAttorney-at-Law, ChristopherRam.Following a series of failed attempts to

In the meantime, Patterson said, “We fully endorse Mr Ram’s case” as he went on to explain the difficulties he has encounteredinattemptingto access information on the highly touted Wales Gas-toEnergy(GTE)project.
“Icantellyouandthisis widely publicized that I would have publicly asked andinParliament, thePrime Ministerandthegovernment toprovidedetailsontheGasto-shore project. Despite givinghiscommitmentthree times in Parliament the Prime Minister has refused to hand over the documents. Ontheveryfirstoccasionhe claimed that when all the contracts are signed he would release it publicly They were signed, the project is on but he has refused,” the Member of Parliament(MP)noted.
He went on to point out that the Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo has now indicated that these key arrangementsthathavebeen signed onto by the government will only be released upon conclusion of
allelementsoftheproject.
To this end, the former Minister argued, “This is totally
Obviously, everyone knows thatthatisheadingtoafailed project so they are trying to use their office to not enlighten the citizens so for Mr Ram I do hope that the case can be heard speedily We 100% support his Court action.”
While he noted his support for the action taken by Ram, Patterson in a subsequent comment told thisnewspaperthatisdeeply troubling that citizens now havetogotosuchlengthsto
access information from the GoG.
In fact, he believes that Guyanese should not be forced to go such routes to access information on the management of its resources. Citing the GTE projectasanexampleagain, Patterson reasoned, “If the Wales Gas to Shore is the shining jewel of the government’s tenure, then it is strange that they would want their masterpiece cloudedinsuchopaquenessit should have been the blueprint of how to do socalled transformational projectsforthefuture.”

“The time has come for me to playmyroleinmakingtheGuyana Teacher’s Union (GTU) great again.” Those are the words of Sir Randy Mingo, who has thrown his hat in the race for chairman of the Buxton branch of the Guyana Teacher’sUnion(GTU).
October, 2025, will mark 27 years since King joined the teaching profession in Guyana. As the current head of the department of industrial technology at the Bladen Hall Multilateral School, Sir Mingo has amassed a lot of experience in leading his department.
Speaking to Kaieteur News recently, Mingo said he has now chosen to run for the position of regional vice president “I have always displayed leadership qualitiesandheldmanyleadership positions wherever I find myself, that includes church, school, social groups, and even in my community Ihavenoticedandpaid keen attention to GTU and the
poverty and a better life for their children.
Parents, I say this with love; whatever little you can give, give your child the gift of learning.
Flawless attendance at school, a library visit each week and an interest in the book borrowed. A consistent bedtime for school nights.Amoment each day to ask, “Whatdidyoulearntoday?”These small acts create a foundation for success.
Education researchers remind us that children cannot learn effectively if their basic needs are unmet Maslow’s hierarchy of needs explains that food, safety, love, andasenseofbelongingcome beforeachievement.
If a child is hungry, unsafe, or unloved, academic learning becomesnearlyimpossible.Thisis notjustatheoryitisanobservable reality Children who don’t feel supported or safe struggle to concentrate, actoutinclass, orgive upentirely
We must therefore strive to meet not only our children’s physical needs but also their emotional ones. A child who is encouraged, whofeelsseen, whois told “I believe in you,” is more likely to persist through difficulty and succeed. Too often in our homesandclassrooms, childrenare ridiculed for failing instead of being guided with love. Studies show that shame and harsh
criticism lower self-esteem and motivation, while positive reinforcementbuildsresilienceand achievement (Jackson State University,2020).
Talk to your children about the value of education, not as a competition, but as a door to opportunity Let them know that their learning is for them, not to “beat” someone else in class. Let them see you read. Let them hear youaskquestions.
Tell them stories of people, maybe in your own family, whose liveschangedbecausetheychoseto learn.
Oneofthemosttransformative habitsafamilycanformisreading together. Children who read regularly perform better in school, think more critically, and write more clearly In fact, research showsthatreadingforpleasurehas a greater impact on academic success than a family’s income or education level (National Literacy Trust, 2023) Let’s normalize weekly trips to the library If there isn’tonenearby, let’sorganizebook swaps among neighbours or start a reading corner at the community center One book can change a child’slife.
But we must also be honest about what happens when children are left unsupervised for too long. In Guyana, far too many young peopleroamthestreetsafterschool, fall into negative peer groups, or
unsupervised screen time. Others aretragicallypreyeduponbyadults whoexploittheirvulnerability We need afterschool programs. We need safe spaces where children can go until their parents return from work. We need community hubs staffed by vetted, caring adults Whether it’s homework help, literacy or robotics club, or storytelling sessions, these programs can protect our children, buildtheirconfidence, andsupport theirlearning.
Andforthoseunder35wholeft school early, I say this; it’s not too late. You have time to fill those education gaps. If you invest in yourself now, you can start a new careerinthreetofiveyears.Thejob marketischanging.Eventechnical roles now require strong digital, communication, and problemsolvingskills.
Countries like Germany have shown us that effective technical education involves deep training—not just short courses, butseriousinvestmentinskills. Our institutions like GTI and the other technical institutes are doing good work, andIhaveseenfirsthandthat their graduates, many of them STEMGuyana members, are bright, ambitious, and globally competitive.

Children still need guidance. They need adults to supervise, to encourage, and to model learning. That is where parents, grandparents, and communities come in. We must build a culture where learning is seen as a family effort, a community effort, and a national priority I’ll end where I began, with books.Iwasfortunatetogrowupin a home where books were celebrated.Atsixyearsold, twelve booksmademefeelliketherichest girl in the world. “This report provides us with concretedatatoguideinvestmentintraining, retention, and decent working conditions, ensuring that health care reaches everyone,” he added. With an average of 66.57 health workers per 10 000 population, the Region exceedstheWHObenchmarkof 44.5.However,majorinequalities persist: while countries suchasHaiti(6.38)andHonduras(7.13)facecriticalshortages, Cuba and the United Stateshavealmostfourtimes the target number. Factors suchaslimitedtrainingcapacity, anagingworkforce, migration (especially in the Caribbean), and unequal distribution widen the gap.
Adiagnosisforaction
The report examines the situation of the health workforce in the Americas based on eight key occupations—physicians, nurses, midwives, dentists, pharmacists, physical therapists, psychologists, and community health workers —and breaks the information down by country Among the most relevant findings are aspects relatedtotheavailability, distribution, and composition of the workforce. Nursing, the occupationforwhichthemost data is available, is predominantlyfemale(89.78%),witha density that varies considerably, ranging from 131.5 nurses per 10 000 population in the United States to just 3.84inHaiti.Whiletheregional average for physicians still shows a slight male majority (51.3%), one-third of countriesreportmorewomenphy-
siciansthanmen, reflectingan ongoing process of feminization of the profession.
Only14countriesreported data on psychologists, with the highest ratios reported by Argentina (17.98 per 10 000 population) and Costa Rica (16.85).Despitetheiressential roleinmentalhealthcare, data gaps persist. The same is true for community health workers, who are key in primary healthcare. However, dataon these workers are scarce outside Brazil and some Caribbean countries.
Midwifery is also a key occupation, as the care provided by skilled midwives during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period canbelife-changingformothersandchildren.However,the development of midwifery in the Region is limited. Midwiveshavearelativelysizable presence only in EnglishspeakingCaribbeancountries, suchasAntiguaandBarbuda, and in some SouthAmerican countries, such as Chile. Thirty-fourcountriesreported dataondentists.Cuba(16.71), Chile (14.81), and Paraguay (12.81) have the highest densities.Twenty-threecountries reported figures on pharmacists:CostaRicahadthehighest density (11.56), followed by Canada (10.54) and the UnitedStates(10.45).Only18 countries provided data on physical therapists. Chile leads,withadensityof18.46, followedbytheUnitedStates (8.79).
The majority of health workers are between 35 and 44 years of age, indicating a
relatively young workforce. However, aging is a concern in countries such as the UnitedStatesandGuatemala, where almost half of physicians are 55 years of age or older, underscoring the need to train new generations. “Without decisive action, these gaps will limit the ability of health systems to respond to the needs of the population,” warned Dr JamesFitzgerald,Directorof PAHO’sDepartmentofHealth Systems and Services. “This report is a compass for governments. With strong informationsystemsandtechnical cooperation, we can train more professionals and bring them to where they are most needed, in rural areas and marginalized communities,” he added.
Data-drivensolutions PAHO advocates strengthening human resourcesforhealthinformation systems (HRHIS) to monitor and plan, increasing training inmidwiferyandpsychology, and designing intersectoral policies to retain talent. The report concludes that, without strategic investments in training, regulation, working conditions, andhealthworker distribution, itwillnotbepossible to move towards truly universal, equitable, andresilient health systems. “The challenge is not just to have morehealthprofessionals, but to ensure that they are where theyaremostneededandthat they have the right skills to meet the demands of the population,” Dr. Barbosa stressed.
