Adriana’s funeral on hold, family wants new autopsy
ByDavinaBagot
The funeral of 11year-old Adriana Younge has been putonholdasrelativesofthe dead child are seeking a secondautopsy
A source close to the child’sfamilyconfirmedthis information with Kaieteur NewsonFridayevening.
According to documents seen by this newspaper, the family’s Lawyer, Darren Wade officially wrote to Chairman of the Medical Council of Guyana, Dr Navindranauth Rambarran on May 1, 2025 seeking permission for renowned pathologist, Dr. Hubert Daisley of Trinidad and Tobagotoperformthesecond Post Mortem Examination (PME)onthechild.
Meanwhile, in another letter to the Medical Council on May 2, Wade explained, “The family is seeking this examination for closure and to grieve in peace They are committed to ensuring that no stone is
l e f t u n t u r n e d i n understanding the circumstances surrounding theirlovedone’sdeath ”
He pointed out that licences have previously been issued under similar circumstances even without a formal application and there are precedents for the organization expediting the issuanceofsuchlicences.
The family was hopeful of conducting the second PME before May 5, when Adriana was initially to be laid to rest but with no response up to press time, Wade notified the Medical Councilthatheispreparedto institute legal proceedings against the body today (Saturday).Familymembers have since raised concerns over the Medical Council’s reluctance to grant approval for the second autopsy to be conducted on the child’s body
Inthemeantime,Amecia Simon, the grieving mother of Adriana Younge
confirmed with this publication that the child’s funeral has been postponed. She added that relatives are yet to receive a copy of the initialautopsyreport.
“For right now, it [funeral] is on hold,” Simon toldKaieteurNews.
Adriana’s PME was conducted on April 28 by a three-member pathology team The specialists included Dr Shubhakar Karra Paul from Barbados Dr Gary Collins, Chief Medical Examiner of Delaware, United States of America and Dr Glenn
Rudner of Mount Sinai Hospital.

Meanwhile, Wade in another letter to President IrfaanAli,alsodatedMay2, 2025 reminded the Head of State of his commitment to the child’s family for a thoroughinvestigation.
The Lawyer reminded the President that in two separate statements dated April 24 and April 25, the mother of the deceased also made this appeal which was widely circulated in the media.
Tothisend,heexplained,
President urged that this step is critical not only for the integrity of the investigation, but also to provide the family with the necessaryclosure PMEfindings
“Despite these several pleadings by the family you have failed and/or neglected to invite any of these agencies, as a result I am instructed by my client as I herebydo, toremindyouofa promise of a thorough investigation, one of which the Guyana Police Force lacks the necessary competenceandcreditability to provide and to invite the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Scotland Yard, or the Royal CanadianMountedPoliceto investigatethematter.”

Following a four-hour long autopsy at the GeorgetownPublicHospital Corporation (GPHC) on Adriana’s body, her father Subryan Younge told reporters that pathologists concluded that the child drown.
At a subsequent press briefing, Darren Wade told themediathatnoboneswere discovered broken in the child’s body Meanwhile, when asked about the possibility of Adriana drowning somewhere else, hesaidnodeterminationwas madeinthatregard.
He also explained that
the team found that the discoloration on Adriana’s skin was consistent with waterdamage.
Whiletherewerereports of cotton wool being observed in the child’s nostrils, after her lifeless body was pulled from the pool, the lawyer said pathologists made no such discovery when the body wasexamined.

Wasteful spending in the name of fashion
DearEditor, Iwritewithdeepconcern about the Origins Fashion Festival being hosted by the Government, under the leadershipMinistersKwame McCoy and Oneidge Walrond.Thiseventisbeing fundedentirelybytaxpayers at a time when the nation faces more pressing and unresolvedissues.
The government uses public funds for a highprofile showcase rather than a meaningful national developmentinitiative.
While the government touts this as a creative industry boost, it is hard to see how such extravagant spending offers value for money, especially at a time whencoreservicesareunder strain.
Reports suggest that millions of dollars will be spentondécor, food, drinks, entertainment, staffing, and related logistics to host this one-off event. The purpose appears to pamper a few eliteswhorubshoulderswith therulingadministrationand distract from recent controversies.
However, many are questioning the justification for such extravagant spending, especially given the state of our public
services.
While the government attempts to frame this as a celebration of the fashion and creative industries, the reality is that Guyana is strugglingincriticalareas.
Across the country, many health centers remain under-equipped, public schools lack crucial resources, and government offices face fundamental infrastructural deficiencies. Yet, instead of investing to fixthesesystemicproblems, the administration spends recklessly on temporary glamour and headlinechasingspectacles.
This isn't isolated: the President has already allocatedmillionstosupport CPL and even pushed through the ill-fated Super LeagueCricketevent, which turned out to be a massive flopforaninaugural.
Yet, in the face of these challenges, millions are being spent on events that offerlittletangiblebenefitto theaveragecitizen.
This is not the first instance of questionable publicspending.
The monies spent on many of these governmentsponsored events — such as the Caribbean Premier League(CPL)andthenewly
launched Super League — are largely unrecoverable.
While the government is quick to highlight revenue figures, it consistently fails to disclose the full cost of hostingtheseevents.
This one-sided reporting raisesseriousconcernsabout transparency Guyanese taxpayers deserve a full accounting.
An independent audit should be urgently conducted to assess the true financial impact and determine whether these expenditures deliver real valueformoney.
The Vice President appearsuninterestedinthese developments, and the opposition lacks the leadership and vision to provide a credible counterbalance. As a result, the misuse of public funds c o n t i n u e s l a rg e l y unchallenged.
It is time for urgent reform. The Audit Office of Guyanamustberestructured andstrengthened.
An independent audit institution is needed — one with the authority and impartiality to track governmentexpenditureand ensureaccountability Moreover, the Origins Fashion Festival cannot
proceed in ignorance of ongoing national concerns, suchastheAdrianneYounge case.
Events of this nature should not be used to mask unresolved injustices or placate internal political tensions Furthermore, if theOriginsFashionFestival istrulybeingheldunderthe banner of “One Guyana,” then the tragic murder of AdrianneYoungmustnotbe ignored Her case should be a central focus of the event not pushed aside in favour of spectacle. If the organizers refuse to acknowledge this national pain, then a public vigil should be held outside the venue to ensure that both celebration and mourning cancoexist
That is the only way to genuinely honour the ideals ofunityandjusticethat"One Guyana" is meant to represent.
Taxpayersdeservebetter Guyanesecitizensshouldnot have to watch their hardearned money used to fund wastefulextravagancewhile essential services deteriorate. The government mustre-evaluateitspriorities andputpeoplebeforepomp.

Glenn Lall civic meeting disrupted by PPP in Crab Wood Creek

Flooding continues in Eccles EE Housing Scheme after execution of trench cleaning project
DearEditor,
About six (6) weeks ago the authorities cleaned the trench on the northern side of the Haags Bosche Dump Site Road, between HeroesHighwayandtheEastBankDemerara public road, presumably to improve drainage WaterfromtheEcclescommunityissupposedto drainintothistrench, whichthenflowsintothe DemeraraRiver
The above-mentioned cleaning did not resultinimproveddrainage, andIsuspectthat it was the lack of drainage that may have promptedthecleaningexercise.
Longbeforethecleaning,Iobservedthat the drains in the community and the main trench were always full and stagnant However, through individual efforts we managed to get the outlets that drain water from the community into the main northern trench excavated. Despite this, the water continuestobestagnantandpungent.
Moreover, the slightest rainfall results in flooding for many days and overflow of the attendantfilthandsludgeuntoproperties.
Mr Editor, my concern led me to investigatethereasonforthelackofdrainage
of the trench, the subject of this letter I discovered that the trench-cleaning exercise involved the removal of vegetation only, no excavationwasdone.
This approach appears to be effective at the deeper segments, but at other sections, wherethereisbuildupofsiltandotherwaste materials from the recent road construction project, there is narrowing and blockages which prevent the water from flowing throughouttheentirelengthof thetrench,to theoutfall.
One would expect that the authorities responsible for signing-off on the project would have noticed that it has not achieved the intended improved drainage, which should have prompted further action to achievetheobjective.
Mr Editor, this is a very depressing situationforresidentsandifitisnotremedied soon, drainage in the community will degenerate into what obtains around the city of Georgetown – Stagnant, obnoxious and stinkdrainsthatbringinitswakesignificant risksofdiseases.

The Caribbean worker and the myth of change
The story was always told with great pride. In the town squares and trade union halls, in the lyrics of the calypsonians and the speeches of politicians, the story was repeated until it became truth: that the workers of the Caribbean had risen, in righteous indignation, and through theirstrikesandprotestsand endlessmarchinginthesun, had broken the back of colonialism.Thatthemanin the sugarcane field, the waterfront workers or the clerks in their white shirts andkhakipantshadbecome, if only for a moment, the agentsoftheirownhistory It was a beautiful tale. It had rhythm. It had drama. It had heroes – in every country andislandoftheCaribbean. Butitwasnevertrue.
The Caribbean worker, whobelievedhimselftobea maker of change, was always in the service of another man's vision. The strikes, the protests, the slogans – all of them were real, yes. But they were never autonomous They were never revolutionary in the way that mattered: in control. From the earliest rumblings of labor unrest in the 1930s to the supposed political awakenings of the 1960s and beyond, the worker was no more than a tool – used, manipulated, and discarded by the men who promised him everything and gave him little.
The colonial order, whichseemedsomonolithic andabsolute, wasalreadyin decline It was not the workerwhohasteneditsend,
butthelogicofempireitself, wornthinbywars, costs, and embarrassment Into that vacuum stepped a new kind of man – the local political leader, educated in British universities, dressed in khakiorblacksuit, fluentin the languages of grievance and ambition. These men, the so-called nationalists, wrapped themselves in the rhetoric of the workers' struggle. They marched at thefrontoftheprotests, gave impassioned speeches about bread and justice, but they never intended to dismantle the house they inherited. Theymerelywishedtomove intoit.
And so, they did. The flag changed, the anthem changed, but the essential structureofpowerremained.
In Jamaica, in Trinidad, in Guyana, in Barbados –everywhere–thenewrulers ascended not with the workers, but on their backs.
And once they sat comfortably on the throne, theybegantoforget. What followed was predictable The unions becamebureaucracies.Their leaders, once firebrands, became gentlemen The militant rhetoric was replaced with carefully worded memoranda In placeofdemands, therewere negotiations. The worker, oncetoldhewastheheartof the nation, became once againwhathealwayswas:a man to be managed, placated, ignored.
In Guyana, it was Burnham who perfected the trick.Theworkersweretold they were part of a “cooperative republic,” a

socialist experiment built in their name. They received slogans, uniforms, mass games. But no real power The sugar workers marched and protested and starved, and still their conditions worsened Power, real power, rested not with them but with the party, the state, the elite who now called themselves comrades but behavedlikekings.
In Trinidad, the oil and gas riches fattened the state, not the people. The unions barked occasionally, but they had long been brought to heel. The independence movement had given birth not to empowerment but to dependency:ongovernment jobs, on state contracts, on handouts disguised as policy The worker's rage was real – but it was also impotent.
Even in the smaller islands, the pattern repeated itself. Leaders rose on the backs of mass movements andthenquicklyseveredthe connection Labor, which had once spoken with force, became fractured, commodified. The worker, who once believed he was the engine of change, found himself outside the gates of power, beggingtobeletin.
The tragedy of the Caribbean worker is that he mistook participation for agency He mistook his presence at the scene of history for authorship. But the script was never his. It was written elsewhere, by men who knew how to use the language of suffering to advance their own quiet aspirations In truth, the worker's real rebellion was

The worker himself has become suspicious, cynical. He has seen too many promises broken, too many heroes revealed as frauds. He no longer believes in slogans. He has stopped marching. He has gone back to surviving.
Perhaps that is the final irony: that the worker, who onceimaginedhimselftobe the foundation of the new nation, has now become its most disillusioned citizen. ‘Government must prioritise people, end corruption’
- Dr. Terrence Campbell
Local businessman, Dr Terrence Campbell has called on the Government of Guyana to end corruption, spread the country’swealthandprioritisethepeople.
Campbell, whoisalsoamemberoftheNaturalResource Fund (NRF) Investment Committee, was speaking to public sector workers, during the labour day rally and march on Thursday His comments came amid concerns over the mismanagement of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the handlingofthenation’soilwealth.
“Wehavealotofcorruptiongoingoninthecountry, alot ofmismanagement,”CampbelltoldKaieteurNewsduringthe event. “And the corruption and the mismanagement have made life difficult for the poor people, the working class. So today,I’mouthereinsupportoftheworkingclass.”
Dr Campbell emphasised that the ongoing mismanagement is negatively affecting the working class, a group he has long supported in the call for change. He said with Guyana’s newfound oil wealth, no citizen should be sufferingorforcedtostrikeforbetterwages.
“I’m here in support of change,” he stated. “Change in government, transparency, accountability, reduction in production costs, and sharing the spires of this country This country is now oil-rich, and nobody should be poor, nobody should be suffering I’m here to protest again the dehumanisingofourpeople.Thereisenoughforeveryone.”
The businessman also pointed to the government’s distributionoflandasanotherexampleofinequality.Hesaid largeplotsoflandarebeinghandedouttogovernmentcronies, whileordinaryGuyanesestruggletosecurelandforhousing.

Campbell further criticised the government’s short-term solutions, particularly the distribution of cash grants. He argued that such measures, like the $100,000 grant given to citizens at Christmas and earlier this year, do not address the long-termneedsofthepeople.

It was stated that while freedom of speech and the right to information are protected in Guyana, journalistswhochallengethe authorities still face threats and intimidation Many independent media outlets also struggle financially, as government advertising oftenfavorspro-government media.
Guyana’s media scene includes both private and state-owned outlets like Stabroek News, Kaieteur News, Guyana Times, Guyana Chronicle, and the National Communications Network.
However, media regulators are appointed by the government without input from the opposition, raising concerns about fairnessandindependence.
RSF stated that

Working class still poor despite oil wealth - PNCR
Guyanese have been complaining about struggling to meet their daily expenses as the cost-of-living increases.
In a nation abundantly blessed with oil wealth, its working class continues to live in poverty as a direct result of government policies, according to the People’s National Congress Reform(PNCR).
In a statement to the media on Friday, the largest political opposition party highlighted that Guyanese workers observed Labour Day 2025 but had no reason for celebration. Instead, the party argued “it was another LabourDayinpoverty.”
According to the PNCR, “The day marked no progress or achievement in terms of a better quality of life, higher benefits, and compensation, for the workersofGuyana.Thereis no respect from the government and there is no hopeforthefuture.”
Labour Day merely highlighted the growing hardships and struggles of workers in Guyana under a government that believes development is limited to
“bricks and concrete” rather than people, the party argued It said the government is continuously forcingGuyaneseworkersto live from pay cheque to pay cheque even though the country boasts massive oil wealth.
“Even with oil wealth, theranksoftheworkingpoor continuetoswell.Therights of workers and their elected union representatives continue to be violated by a government obsessed with control and domination There are too many of our workers still experiencing a life of destitution, economic insecurity, and hardships,” thePNCRsaid.
The party was keen to note that Guyana’s constitution enshrines the importance of workers. It statesinArticle21that“The sourceofthegrowthofsocial wealth and of the well-being of the people, and of each individual, is the labour of thepeople.”
To this end, the

Opposition group argued that workers locally must be well paid, valued, honored, respected and celebrated Thepartyurgedthatworkers must have a high quality of life with all their rights and freedoms protected and promoted.
Withthesituationstarkly different under the present government, the PNCR assured that this is the last Labour Day under the PPP government and as the next government, it will ensure workers have a reason to celebrate.
“ A s t h e n e x t government, we, in APNU, pledgethatLabourDay2026 will be a day of celebration of a better quality of life for theworkingclassofGuyana. Byabetterqualityoflife,we mean, among other things, guaranteed living wages for all, higher household incomes, better working conditions, better social services, andmorehopeand confidenceinthefuture,”the partystated.

Palestinian children face starvation under Israel’s total Gaza blockade, 50 killed
Aljazeera-Thousandsof Palestinian children in the Gaza Strip are facing an increased threat of starvation, the United Nations has warned, as Israel's continued blockade of food, water and other critical supplies to the besieged and bombarded coastal territory enters its thirdmonth.
The UN's child rights agency (UNICEF) said on Friday that more than 9,000 children had been admitted for treatment for acute malnutrition since the start oftheyear Butthesituation has worsened since Israel imposed a total blockade on the Palestinian enclave in earlyMarch.

“With each passing day oftheaidblockade, theyface the growing risk of starvation, illness and death –nothingcanjustifythis.”
Israel has blocked all humanitarian assistance from reaching Palestinians in Gaza since March 2, spurring international condemnation.

“Houston, Tranquility Base here The Eagle has landed!” Theythen'walked onthemoon'!
Right now, millions around the world still seriously believe that 1969's moon landing, and all afterwards, to the last supposed moon missionApollo 17, NASA's last Apollo mission, on 07 December 1972, featuring American Astronauts Gene
Cernan and Harrison Schmitt - never happened. Many, to this day, believe thatthoselandingshadbeen 'A-I'generated!
There are lingering questions (a) If those “landings on the moon” happened, assisted by e x t r e m e l y l a r g e , rudimentary computers
whichtookupthespaceofa small house, in 1960s, then how come, with all of our present, unbelievably advanced technology and minimalization, (2025's Lenovo Yoga Slim 7i Aura Edition Lap-Top computer has more computerization than those massive 1960s computers),noonehasgone back to the moon since 1972? (b) Why has there been so much struggle, and deaths, with much more mechanization available now, to get back to the moon? (c) Did they lie to us in1969?

In 1998, duringTest No. 5, West Indies v England, at K e n s i n g t o n O v a l , Bridgetown,Barbados,Ihad an exciting conversation with my friend, South
African Umpire Cyril Mitchley, one of the most jovial personalities to ever adjudicate our wonderful game He vociferously maintained: “Crofty, umpires will always be needed in cricket.” My technological mind countered: “If, as noted, the 'Eagle'fromApollo11,after travellinginspacefor4days, 6 hours and 45 minutes, covering 240,000 miles, landed in the Sea of Tranquility, on our moon, in 1969, with such precision, due to “A-I”, to be only 4 miles (6.5 km), from the exact planned point of landing, thenwhycanwenot do away with all umpires, since the length of a cricket pitch is only 20.12 meters (22 feet)? For such an extremelyshortdistance, our
RoboticInternational Umpiring International cricket's umpiring has become farcical. Noumpirewantsto make active, instant decisions anymore, not with 25 + television cameras a r o u n d F e a r o f disqualification is the key “Theyaresoscaredoflosing their jobs, they have forgotten how to do their jobs!”
Better to have “A-I”, (DRS - Decision Review System), make computergenerated decisions than to have humans make human mistakes. This is cricket's evolution. “A-I” has existed for75+years;beforeWorld WarII(1939-1945).
The very highly technologically advanced German scientists made V-1 and V-2 flying rocketbombs, powered and controlled by “A-I”. Quite ironically, some of those same German scientists also engineered the Saturn V rocket which blasted American Astronauts Neil Armstrong, Michael Collins andEdwinAldrinintospace onApollo11in1969.
A-Iinfilms–Warnings! This almost absolute dependence on “A-I”, in sports and in life, could backfire. Be directed to the magnificent1983film “War Games”, very pertinent to our time now, starring Ally

frighteningly, what could happen when “A-I” goes wrong. Checkitout. “Intelligence” and “cricket,” used together in the same sentence, is an obvious “oxymoron”! For those younger than 35 who do not know what dictionaries are, or those over 35 who do not know where their dictionaries are, here, from my formative years, aretwo“oxymorons”.
Regularly said to me by 'Old Sylvie', which many of my age group heard too: “Bhoy, yuh know dat I only beatinyuhforyuhowngood. Disishuttinmemoredanum is huttin yuh!” Another oxymoron from her: “I mek yuh, so I kud kill yuh!”
Yeah! Right! Sheregularly tried!
If my mother, with her aggression,hadbeena2025 parent, with present rules of child-raising,she,andmany of her generation, would have gone to jail every monthforchildabuse!
“Oxymoron”, in Oxford English and MarionWebster dictionaries, is “a figure of speech in which contradictory terms appear in conjunction ” As a former Teacher, I note that onlyGodcanhelpyouifyou also do not know the meanings of 'contradictory' and'conjunction.'
Cricket intelligence, and used together, diverge as much as 'like poles' of similarmagnets,(positiveto positive; negative to negative), ala high school Physics. They repel each other with equal strengths but in opposite directions. Liketherobotsthatwehave all, insomeway, become,we accept “whatever”, when one notes cricket in the 2020s. Lifegoeson!
Internationalcricket umpiringinthe2020s!
Have you noticed where umpires, in present international cricket, stand whentheyareatsquare-leg?
No longer do they stand, as inmyplayingdays, atactual square leg, along that 'popping
extension.
They stand at varying anglesthereof. Itseemsthat by decree, decisions for stumpings, runouts and noballs are sent “upstairs” to ThirdUmpires.
LBW (Leg Before Wicket) and catches are similarly referred by batsmenandcaptains.
“Artificial Intelligence” (A–I) has us confused and convinced. Even when we knowwhatwehaveheardor seen, we do not believe it anymore. If this is so, why are umpires out there on the field? Justtocountsixlegal deliveries? Even present onlinereferencedictionary/ encyclopedia, “Wikipedia”, with its past entries being mostly human, has complained about “Bots” taking over, as has been so withcricket!
