Time for urgent and meaningful increase in the national minimum wage
DearEditor, Comrades, brothers and sisters of the working class, membersofourtradeunions, friends of labour across Guyana and the Caribbean, and all citizens Good Morning and Happy Labour Day2025.
Today, as we gather in unitytohonourthesacrifices and contributions of the working people of Guyana, wedosoundertheweightof national grief and uncertainty BeforeIspeakto the triumphs and challenges ofourmovement, letmefirst express, on behalf of the Guyana Agricultural and General Workers Union (GAWU), our deepest sympathies and heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of Adrianna Younge, a young lifecutshortfartoosoon.
Adrianna's passing has stirred profound sorrow across our country It is a tragedy that must not be ignored or politicised but mustinsteadcompelusallto seek truth, and protect the dignity of every life in this nation. We support and note the efforts made by the authorities and independent professionals to investigate this case with transparency and integrity We welcome the involvement of international expertise and await the final toxicology report, which we hope will bringgreaterclarity
However, even as we mourn, we must also speak clearly and without hesitation—we condemn in thestrongesttermsallactsof violence, aggression, and looting that have followed this tragedy These acts do not honour Adrianna's memory, nor do they reflect the peaceful, respectful society that we strive to
build. Violence and chaos have no place in our democratic and civilised country
Equally, we denounce those who are leading and influencingourpeopletoact r e c k l e s s l y a n d irresponsibly those who sow discord for their own gain, andthosewhomislead our youth into acts of destruction rather than peacefuladvocacy
The working class has alwaysbeenthemoralcentre of our country—builders of communities and defenders ofpeace.Letusnotlosesight ofthatlegacy.
Today, we also pause to pay tribute to the continued a n d u n w a v e r i n g contributions of the Guyanese working class. In thefields, inthefactories,in the public service, on construction sites, in hospitals, classrooms, and offices—our workers power thisnation.Despitetheodds and challenges of adjusting to a fast-growing economy, ourworkerscontinuetogive their best You are the foundation upon which Guyana'sprogressstands.
And yes, comrades, Guyana is progressing. We are seeing a transformation that not long ago felt like a dream. Massive investments in infrastructure, expansion of social services, and renewed attention to agriculture, housing, energy, education, andhealthcareare allreshapingourcountryfor thebetter
Weacknowledgethatthe government has undertaken several pro-worker initiatives. From improved access to education and vocational training to expanded healthcare coverage and housing solutions, these are policies
with a human face
Significant investments in roads, bridges, hospitals, and school facilities are not just signs of development; they aresignsofacommitmentto inclusionandmodernisation.
B u t l e t u s b e clear—while we recognise theseadvancements, wealso reaffirm the responsibility that comes with national growth. We in the labour movement insist that workers must not be left behind. Guyana's rise must also be the workers' rise.As oureconomyexpands, asoil revenues grow, and as international attention turns to our shores, we say with one voice: the Guyanese worker must benefit fairly andfully
In this context, we call foranurgentandmeaningful increase in the national minimum wage Our working families deserve a wage that reflects the reality ofdailylife.Anationcannot prosper if its workers face difficulties We urge policymakersandemployers toactdecisivelyontheissue of improving the national minimumwage.
Comrades, ourcallisnot isolated. Around the world, weareseeingarenewedrise inworkerconsciousnessand activism.
From Latin America to Europe, fromNorthAmerica to Africa and Asia, workers are demanding fair wages, better conditions, and corporate accountability In recentmonths, wehaveseen majorstrikesinthetransport, education, andhealthsectors across continents. Workers arestandingup!
Thisglobalmovementis also a reminder that our struggle is not unique—it is shared by workers everywhere. It affirms our
place in an international brotherhood and sisterhood of labour And it reinforces the importance of solidarity, unity, and collective strength.
HereinGuyana, wemust continue to organise, educate, and empower our members We must strengthen the institutions that protect worker rights and prepare our workforce for the demands of a rapidly changingeconomy Wemust ensure that trade unions remain dynamic, inclusive, and responsive to new generations of workers, especiallyouryoungpeople, who will inherit the society wearebuildingtoday.
Brothers and sisters, in these complex times, we must remain united, not divided by politics, race, class, orgeography Wemust reject those who stoke fear and mistrust, and instead build a nation rooted in cooperation, equity, and respect.
We must ensure that the social contract between workers and the state is upheld, that workers are protected, andthateconomic gainsaredistributedfairly
As we celebrate this Labour Day 2025, let us honour the memory of those who came before us—the sugar workers, bauxite miners, teachers, nurses, and public servants who fought forbetterlifeforustoenjoy L e t u s r e n e w o u r commitment to building a Guyana where every worker hasavoice, everyfamilyhas the opportunity, and every childhashope.
May the workers of Guyanacontinuetoleadwith pride, purpose, and in unison.

The State must bear responsibility for the riots
DearEditor,
In every society, the stabilityofanationrestsonthe conduct of its institutions most importantly, the police andthepoliticalleadership In thecaseofthetragicdeathof Adriana Young, what we have witnessed is not just institutional failure, but a betrayal of the public trust. The recent protests, which

May Day vs Labour Day
DearEditor, I wish to address the increasing use of the term "LabourDay"asasubstitute for "May Day" or "Workers' Day” While "Labour Day" is widely recognized in the UnitedStates, itisimportant to note that this designation is unrelated to the historical significance of May Day and Workers' D a y MayDay,celebratedonMay 1st, has its roots in the international labor m o v e m e n t a n d commemoratesthestruggles
and achievements of workersaroundtheworld. In contrast, "Labour Day"intheU.S.isobserved on the first Monday in September and has evolved into a more generalized celebration of workers rather than a specific recognition of their s t r u g g l e s By adopting the term "Labour Day" in place of May Day, we risk diluting the important historical context and solidarity that Workers' Day represents Itiscrucialthatwehonorthe rich legacy of labor unions and their membership by preserving the original terminology associated with thisobservance.
Condemn Violent Protests and Attacks on Innocent People
DearEditor,
The Guyana Democracy Project based in New York expresses condolence to the family of the child who autopsyreportsaiddrowned, and the organization also condemn the violence and hate unleashed on people on account of race carried out by protesters in the name of the deceased child over the lastseveraldays.
The girl's lifeless body was found in the pool at a hotel inTuschen on the East BankofEssequibo.
Guyanese in USA praised President Irfaan Ali for his leadership in responding to the requests anddemandsofthefamilyof the child for an independent autopsy and investigation of what happened The Presidentdisplayedempathy and comforted the grieving family in a manner of a fatherlyfigure.
He agreed to all their demands to investigate how andwhythechilddied.
Nowthatthedemandsof the family have been met, there should not be any hindrance to an independent investigation, certainly not violence (by opportunists) that put the nation at a standstill. Guyanese in USA that this writer conversed with strongly condemn the violent protests in various parts of the country relating to the death of the child. Reports said that protesters attacked the hotel and
destroyed the home of its owners, blaming them for the death of the child and accusingofsomesinisteract.
Asitturnedout, thegirldied by drowning, according to three different independent pathologists who performed the post-mortem as requested by the family of the deceased child Protesters should allow the lawtotakeitscourse.
Innocent people who simply went about their business and with no connection with the hotel (and its owners) were attacked over several days. Several businesses and public buildings were destroyed, and people injured. Acid was thrown at students going to school. There was looting of businesses and robbing of people based on race. There is no justification for the violence. The father of the child has reportedly condemned the violence in thenameofhisdaughter
The Guyana Democracy Project notes that violence cannot solve any problem and most certainly will not bringbackthechild.
Thepublicneedstoknow whatreallyhappened--how did this tragedy occur and whatcantheauthoritieslearn fromittopreventarepeat.
Attacking people on the roadsanddestroyingprivate and public property will not leadtoanyresolutiononthe girl'sdeath.
F o r t o o l o n g , opportunistic protesters turned to violence attacking individuals based on their raceorperceived(suspected) politicalaffiliation.
T h i s m u s t b e condemned. No one should be attacked, and most certainly not on account of race or faith. Violence is a serious threat to peace and security And violence inevitablybegetsviolence.
The attacks on people and destruction of property a r e c r i m i n a l a n d unjustifiable, regardless of motivationandemotion.
Theattacksaresenseless. Such acts must be condemned by all (politicians, civic society religious leaders) The Guyana Democracy Project calls on the authority to identify the attackers and go afterthem. Theperpetrators, organisers, and sponsors of attacksandlootersandother criminal elements must be held accountable and broughttojustice.
Guyanese in New York express support and solidaritywiththevictimsof violence including those whofeelthreatened. Their thoughts and prayersarewiththefamilyof thechildandthoseattacked. And they urge the President to pursue an independent forensic investigation of the drowning.

Call in the FBI to probe Adriana’s
death
The Government of Guyana (GoG) is yet to commit to an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of 11-year-old Adriana Younge.
The child mysteriously went missing at the Double Day Hotel last week, and her corpse was found floating in the hotel’s pool less than 24 hours later. The family is adamant that, although an independent autopsy shows she died from drowning, it is possible her body may have been planted in the pool after searches were conducted.
So far, the GoG has only given its word for a “thorough” but not an independent investigation. The question, therefore, is why are they afraid to commit to an independent probe?
The truth is, with elections just around the corner, the death of Adriana Younge will expose the glaring inconsistencies and failures of the Guyana Police Force, for which this government is responsible
The administration is not taking any risks and is hoping that the current storm will soon pass, but that child deserves justice, and her family deserves the truth. If the government is truly committed to ensuring justice, it would ensure a credible, independent body probes the death of little Adriana Younge.

Children were never treated better
Last week, our nation's Grade 6 students sat for the National Grade Six Assessment (NGSA) a two-day academic ordeal that, quite frankly, should have its own national holiday. The atmosphere around the country was electric. Schools were sanctified. Homes were transformed into meditation retreats. And most notably, parentsturnedintoapeculiar blend of star chefs, therapists, and motivational speakers, allrolledintoone.
If you had strolled past any school last week, you might've thought you were witnessing a scene from a coming-of-age film. There they were mothers and fathers, eyes moist with emotion, kissing their children goodbye like they were boarding a space shuttle to Mars. Hugs were dispensed generously, encouraging words flowed like honey, and in some cases,Isuspectincensemay have been lit to ward off negativeenergy
And why not? On exam days, these children are not just children they are precious vessels of promise. For two glorious mornings, they get hot breakfasts with names like “brain-boosting porridge” and “omega-3 omelettes ” Parents, who normally struggle to locate their child's school shoes,
were suddenly wide awake at 5:00 a m , making smoothies, packing tissues, and asking if their children “felt mentally ready ” Mentalreadiness, mindyou, wasnotatopicofdiscussion duringtheprecedingyears. Lunch was no longer a cheese roll or a sandwich. No, no.Thesechildren were treated to gourmet experiences: Church's Chicken,PizzaHut,Chinese from“theniceplace, notthe usual one,” and in a few reportedcases,afour-course meal – because nothing screams “Excel on that Composition paper!” like havingagoodmeal. And it wasn't just food. Stationery was upgraded Extra pencils were bought –HB 4 Sharpeners and erasers were counted and recountedwiththeprecision ofaNASAlaunchsequence. Parents walked their kids to school as though guiding them through a minefield of academic doom. And before the afternoon session? More hugs. More kisses. More encouragement. You'd think thefateoftheWesternworld depended on these kids correctly identifying the subject and predicate in Sentence3.

And when those results arereleased, whenthenames are not on the list, the narrative will change. Oh, howitwillchange.
The same parents who massaged their children's temples before exams and whispered affirmations into their ears will now look bewildered and betrayed “After all I did? After the extra pencils? invisible line of parental satisfaction?
Thetruth, ofcourse, isfar more boring and far more inconvenient: love and learning are not things you can microwave. They don't respond well to last-minute panicandasideoffries. You can'treverseayearofyelling and indifference with two days of hugs and pepperoni pizza You can't undo a childhood of neglected reading habits with a heartfelt note tucked in a lunchbox.
But try telling that to the parents, many of whom genuinely believe that their two-day transformation into paragons of parenting should've guaranteed a scholarship and a marching band.
The tragicomic twist is that children notice these things. They'renotfooledby
last-minute affection. They know when the kindness is temporary, when the love is conditional, and when the attention is purchased by a $4.500pizzaorder.

The point is not that parents shouldn't support their children during exams they absolutely should. But they must also support them every other week of the year The home should be a loving, stable, nurturingenvironment, nota two-daycarnivalofaffection tied to a national test

ICJ orders Venezuela to back off from holding elections in Essequibo
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has ordered that, pendingafinaldecision in the case, Venezuela must refrain from conducting elections or preparing to conduct elections in the EssequiboRegion.
The order was handed down on May 1, 2025. According to information released by President Irfaan Ali, the ICJ also noted that the Court reaffirmed the provisional measures of its order of December 1, 2023, which it said should be immediately and effectively implemented.
Last March, the ICJ acknowledged Guyana’s Request for provisional measures in the case concerning the Arbitral Award of 3 October 1899
(Guyana v Venezuela). The ICJwasaskedtotakeurgent action in response to Venezuela’s plans to hold elections in the Essequibo region.
Government had sought the measures from the court afte
had announced that elections werescheduledtotakeplace on 25 May 2025 in the Essequibo region. Guyana asserted that the conduct of these elections, along with any preparatory acts, would violate its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence
Furthermore,Guyanaargued that such actions would breach the ICJ’s provisional orderissuedonDecember1, 2023 Guyana had also warned that Venezuela’s
electoral activities could cause irreparable harm and underscored the urgency of provisionalmeasures.

Calls grow for Hicken to go
From page 2 he said. With that being said, the joint political parties are callingforanimpartialinvestigation into Adriana’s death to be led, managed, and conducted by a credible international law enforcement agency- Scotland Yard, RCMP, or the FBI, with the appropriateforensiccapacity under the constitutional auspicesoftheGPF
Notably, he said they are callingfor“TheimmediateremovaloftheCommissionerof Police pending the outcome of investigations (and) the establishment of an Independent Civilian Oversight Authority to review and investigate allegations of misconduct within the Guyana PoliceForce.”
When asked about their calls for an independent investigation and the removal of the top cop, AFC Leader, Nigel Hughes explained that there is a lack of confidence in the ability of the Police Force, given the manner in which they responded to the initialreportofAdrianabeing missing.
HeaddedthattheGovern-
ment of Guyana has the abilitytomakearequesttoeither the British, United States or Canadian Government, who he is confident will immediately indicate whether their lawenforcementagenciescan come forward and render assistance.
“Finally, in relation to Commissioner having to go, for the reasons that I have just said and because of the actions of the Guyana Police Force even before this body was found and most importantly, the complete absence of the Commissioner during any stage of this investigation to provide any information, thecompleteabsenceof the Minister of HomeAffairs to provide any information when speculation was rife, I think is in addition to the other obvious reasons, those arereasonswhyheshouldgo immediately,” Hughes commented.
Further, theAFC Leader said that the issue with a misleadingpolicereportthatAdriana was seen leaving in a car raised a series of questions. He reminded that the child’s mother told a police officer,
after seeing the footage provided by police, that it was not her daughter entering the car
“Why would the police, after having been informed by the mother of the child, ‘that is notmychild’.Whywouldthe police make a public statementsayingthatthechildleft inamotorvehiclewhichwas identifiedatthespecifictime? So that means that the police are saying she was alive at that time, and more importantly, on what basis would they reject a statement from the mother who, having seen the same footage that they wererelyingonsay, whosaid tothem, thisisnotmydaughter Why would they reject that?”heexplained.
Commenting on the revised Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), which wasissuedbytheGPFfollowing her death, Hughes stated thatitisanimprovement, but it is too little and unfortunately, in this specific case, too late.

She dedicated her return to public office to “the forgotten people”, those living in underserved and o f t e n o v e r l o o k e d communities beyond the capital.
“If you are living on the fringes of the Guanapo, in thecoconutestatesofIcacos, in Kernahan village in the Nariva swamp, on the coastline in Charlotteville, Tobago, or the lagoons of Barrackpore, I see you. You will be treated equally and fairly.”
Persad-Bissessar warned her newly elected ministers that accountability will be non-negotiable.
“If you treat the citizens with callousness, contempt, and corrupt ways, I guarantee you retribution willbeswiftandbrutal.”
She cautioned against
mistaking her physical appearance or kindness for weakness and vowed to uphold the values of integrity, transparency, and equity throughout her government.
Reflecting on her previous time out of office, Persad-Bissessar described the past decade as a time of personalandpoliticalexile.
“For ten years, I was a woman scorned, a pariah to many.Iknowhowitfeelsto be humiliated and written off. But I also know that the poorestandhumblestpeople came to my aid ” That period, she said, deepened her understanding of those who feel forgotten by the politicalsystem.
She drew on Christian scripture to underscore her message of resilience and hope, quoting from 1 Peter 3:8-12 and calling on the nation to choose “courage over fear” and “hope over despair.”
Persad-Bissessar also
extended an olive branch to those who did not vote for theUNC.
“To those citizens who supported other political parties, I see you too. You will be treated equally Everybodywillwin.”

US wants to start tariff talks with China, state media says
BEIJING/WASHINGT
ON, May 1 (Reuters) -The United States has approached China seeking talks over President Donald Trump’s 145% tariffs, a social media account affiliated with Chinese state media said on Thursday, potentially signalling Beijing’s openness to negotiations.
“ T h e U S h a s proactively reached out to China through multiple channels, hoping to hold discussions on the tariff issue,” Yuyuan Tantian said in a post published on its official Weibo social media account, citing anonymous sources.
U.S. officials, including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett, alsoexpressedhope for progress in easing trade tensions.
Hassett told CNBC that there have been “loose discussions all over both governments” about the tariffs and China’s easing of duties on some U.S. goods
last week was a sign of progress.
Beijing has made little effort to contain its anger at the tariffs, which it says are tantamount to bullying and cannot stop the rise of the world’s second-largest economy Instead, it has directed its fury at rallying public and global condemnation of the import curbs-showingnointerestin areprieve.
That said, alongside leveraging its propaganda machine to hit back at the duties, China has quietly created a list of U.S.-made productsitwillexemptfrom its retaliatory 125% tariffsi n c l u d i n g s e l e c t pharmaceuticals, microchips andjetengines-Reutershas reported, to ease the duties’ impact.
Bessent mentioned no specific talks during a Fox BusinessNetworkinterview, but said that high tariffs of 145% on the U.S. side and 125% on the Chinese side neededtobede-escalatedfor negotiationstobegin.
“I am confident that the
Chinesewillwanttoreacha deal. And as I said, this is going to be a multi-step process,” Bessent said “First, we need to deescalate, andthenovertime, we will start focusing on a largertradedeal.”
He said that among the firststepswouldbetorevisit China’sfailuretomakegood on purchase commitments forAmericangoodsmadeas partofTrump’s2020“Phase 1” trade deal that ended his first-term trade war with Beijing.
Democratic Republic of Congohaslaunchedabidto strip former President JosephKabilaofhislifelong immunity
That deal called for China to increase purchases of American manufactured and agricultural products and services by $200 billion annuallyovertwoyears, but theCOVID-19pandemichit justafteritssigning.
Bessent also said that “insidious” non-tariff trade barriers and intellectual property theft also would be part of negotiations over
tariffs with China, adding: “everything is on the table f o r t h e e c o n o m i c relationship.”
TARIFFSTOOHIGH
Once Trump’s tariffs topped 35% they became prohibitively high for Chineseexporters.
Nomura Securities said thatsome16millionChinese people could lose their jobs once the long-term ripple effects of a 50% drop in Chinese exports to the U.S. work their way through the economy
Bessentsaidthepressure was on China because it is more dependent on exports totheU.S.thanviceversa.
“They sell us about five times more than we sell them So their factories are closing down as we speak,” Bessent said “We’re going into the holiday season Orders are placed for that now So if those orders aren’t placed, it could be devastating for the
Chinese ”
Still, Beijing has been adamant it will stand and fight, rather than rush to the
negotiation table - with the foreign ministry likening yieldingtoTrump’stariffsto “drinking poison.” “Before the U S takes any substantiveaction,Chinahas no need to engage in talks withtheU.S.,”thepostfrom Yuyuan Tantian added, citing anonymous experts.
“However,iftheU.S.wishes toinitiatecontact, thereisno harm at this stage for China toengage.”
“China needs to observe closely, even force out the U S ’ true intentions, to maintain the initiative in both negotiation and confrontation,”itconcluded.
Trump said in a U.S. media interview published last Friday that his administration was talking with China to reach a tariff deal and that Chinese President Xi Jinping had calledhim.Beijinglastweek repeatedly denied such talks were taking place, accusing Washington of “misleading thepublic”.
NOKNOWNTALKS
Guo Jiakun, a Chinese f o r e i g n m i n i s t r y
spokesperson, said on Wednesday: “as far as I know, there have been no consultationsornegotiations between China and the U.S. ontariffs”.
Chinese officials have consistently stated that Beijingisopentotalks, with thecaveatthat“dialogueand negotiationmustbebasedon equality, respect and mutual benefit.” Yuyuan Tantian is not among China’s most authoritative state media outlets.
TheGlobalTimes, which is owned by the newspaper ofthegoverningCommunist Party, People’s Daily, has often been first to report China’s next steps in trade disagreements over the past fewyears.
