experience and long reach to batter ‘The Frog’ and forcing his handlers to throw in the towel midway into the fourth round. For his efforts, the burly Jamaican took home two million dollars ($2,000,000) while his adversary pocketed five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000). Kamal will best be remembered for his win over Guyanese Winston Pompey

in a 6 rounds middleweight affair that was a slugfest. The Jamaican also clinched a TKO decision over Romeo Norville on a Guyana Fight Night card last year and had participated in last year’s ‘Contender’ Series, albeit unsuccessfully. Guyanese boxer, Edmond DeClou, continued his winning ways following a prolonged absence from the ring where he was nursing a broken jaw, with a lopsided unanimous points victory over Kevin Hylton, while another Guyanese, Quincy Gomes, failed to get past last year’s Contender champion,

Sakima Mullings when the two clashed in a welterweight encounter. Kaieteur Sport spoke with referee, Eon Jardine, who is also on duties in Jamaica. He said that despite being a late substitute, Gomes fought well. Indeed, Gomes arrived in Jamaica merely two days prior to the fight and fought against the odds since he was not engaged in intense training before the fight. “He was holding his own against Mullings but it was obvious that he was poorly conditioned,” said Jardine. This is Gomes’ second

loss after surrendering a points decision to Frenchman, Arnold Martinez at the Georges Donzenac Centre Sportif Departmental, Cayenne French Guiana on Saturday March 14. His record has dipped to 5 fights with 3 wins and 2 losses. While there has been no confirmation so far, DeClou might have earned quite a bit with Mullings once again cashing in since the third and fourth place finishers were to have received $250,000 and $200,000 respectively. Meanwhile, several other

Guyanese had been involved in the tournament with mixed fortunes. Dereck Richmond was an early casualty, while Kevin Pompey’s fight was cancelled though he had been in Jamaica during the early stages of the competition. Another Guyanese, Jermaine King, who had tipped the scales as a welterweight before migrating to the United States but had ballooned to an out of proportion weight. As such, he was not enrolled in the tournament though he was also in Jamaica at the early stages.
