LIFE RING FOUNDATION

Life Ring steps out of the shadows with concert series, other efforts

year ago Kelly Woolwine and his brother Richard sold off Atlantic Credit Finance, a company they had spent two decades growing to over 200 employees. That gave Kelly Woolwine – newly married (to Jessica) then with a baby on the way – more time as well to devote to his Life Ring Foundation, which he describes as a bridge or direct impact public charity, working to support other non-profits,

largely out of the spotlight. Flash forward one year and the president of Life Ring Foundation is suddenly a concert promoter at Elmwood Park, staging three big musical events to raise money for Life Ring initiatives – sort of a coming out party as well, moving out of the shadows to let people know what the organization is all about. (Richard Woolwine is involved with Life Ring also in a lowerprofile capacity says his brother) Already this summer the Big Lick Summer Concert Series has brought Morris Day and The Time to the Elmwood Park Amphitheater (the 80’s funk-pop group was also the comic foil in Prince’s movie “Purple Rain) and multi-genre Old Crow Medicine Show in late August. The last concert in the Big Lick series is country music’s Dwight Yoakum on September 9th. Jefferson Center has worked with Life Ring to supply ticketing services (jeffcenter.org) and volunteers for each show.

notes Woolwine, a Roanoke native (Northside High School, then Virginia Tech) who says his vision is to make the valley a better place to live, work and play – by supporting charities that improve people’s everyday lives and in small part by offering more entertainment options like the Big Lick Summer Concert Series. “In this day and age employers are prioritizing life styles … [not just from a business and resource standpoint]. When our worst neighborhoods are better and our kids are known to be better educated … I think employers will say ‘yes we should be in Roanoke.’” Access to affordable health care and entertainment options are also part of that mix says Woolwine (48), who grew up near Williamson Road. Several entities put on concerts at the new Elmwood Park Amphitheater during its first full season, including the City of Roanoke, Downtown Roanoke Inc., Jefferson Center and Life Ring Foundation. Woolwine envisions a more “unified” approach and coordination in 2016, when he would like to stage a half dozen or so music events. Life Ring is involved with efforts like Cure Kids Cancer, Roanoke Rescue Mission, Apple Ridge Farms, the Salvation Army’s Turning Point Shelter for abused women and is a major supporter for Roanoke’s Star City Reads program, a nationally-recognized early literacy initiative that strives to make sure kids in the city can read proficiently by the third grade. Woolwine says studies show children who can read at that level have a better shot at success down the road. “We try hard to give back.” Life Ring also was a major sponsor of this summer’s Lea Youth Outdoor Basketball League, which brought the Roanoke City police

department and inner-city children together on the courts at Melrose Park in Northwest Roanoke. They forecasted 75 or so participants; almost 300 showed up says Woolwine. “It is direct impact with these kids,” says Woolwine of the Youth League, which also included motivational talks from local community leaders and extensive interaction with police officers. Being in the concert business this summer turned out to be a labor of love for Woolwine and others that helped put the Big Lick series together. “It’s been a learning experience. I really underestimated the number of moving parts and what it takes but I

have to say I love it – because of what’s behind it. I’m doing it for the music and the charity cause.” Woolwine gives the city, DRI, Jefferson Center and others kudos for their support. Building the donor base and making Life Ring Foundation more sustainable are major goals. (Woolwine has been footing most of the administrative costs to date.) Staging concerts helps make that happen. “I want to be where I can make the biggest difference – the biggest impact,” says Kelly Woolwine. “Right now I feel like I’m in a sweet spot where I can use my money and donors and influence to bring about change. There are plenty of resources in this town.” Check out VIP “In the Mix” on pg. 30

calendar EST. 1976 | 40TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON

On Golden Pond

This fall at Mill Mountain Theatre, enjoy a timeless and beautiful play about family, relationships, aging, and life-long love. ON GOLDEN POND first premiered on Broadway in 1979 with a revival in 2005, but most are familiar with the 1981 film adaptation starring Henry Fonda, Katherine Hepburn and Jane Fonda. The story follows Norman, a retired professor, nearing eighty, with failing health and memory, and Ethel, his wife, ten years younger, who is more energetic and lucid. The two are spending another summer at their lake-side cottage when they are visited by their divorced, middleaged daughter, Chelsea, and her fiancé, Bill. Chelsea, whom Norman and Ethel haven’t seen in years, has a strained and rocky relationship with her father. The tides turn as Chelsea and her fiancé, Bill, head to Europe for a few weeks, leaving behind his teenage son, Billy. Though first interactions between 13-year-old Billy and 80-year-old Norman are lost in the generational gap, over time the boy becomes the “grandchild” the elderly couple have longed for. Chelsea returns weeks later to find that Billy and Norman have the relationship she always longed for with her father.

For more than fifty years, Del McCoury’s music has defined authenticity for hardcore bluegrass fans, as well as a growing number of fans among those only vaguely familiar with the genre. McCoury is something special, a living link to the days when bluegrass was made only in hillbilly honkytonks, schoolhouse shows and on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry. Today he remains a commandingly vital presence in the industry appearing on prime time and late night talk show TV, and music festivals where

The fifth decade of that halfcentury of music making has been filled with new and ongoing triumphs. The Del McCoury Band has shown unprecedented stability, with but a single hange in membership in twenty years; nine IBMA Entertainer of the Year trophies, membership in the cast of the legendary Grand Ole Opry in 2003, and two Grammy awards. Del might be 75, but he’s singing better than ever and showing no signs of slowing down.

O. Winston Link at LinDor Arts October 2 - October 29, 2015 Best known for his photography and sound recordings of the last days of the steam railroad, and for pioneering night photography. As a teenager, Link developed early interests in photography, locomotives and rail yards. Amid the depression era, Link graduated from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn with a degree in civil engineering. Soon after, he took a job as a photographer for a public relations firm, an act that launched his lifelong photographic career. Link’s reasons for shooting at night were simple. For one, it was more romantic and dramatic. For Link the trains were comparable to Garbo and Dietrich at their most

James Farmer at the Taubman October 6, 2015 glamorous. Secondly, steam from the trains against a night sky photographed white. Against a day sky it came out a dirty grey. Whatever the circumstances, Link’s pictures were an intense labor of love.

At first Link’s photographs were appreciated for their combination of nostalgia, technical virtuosity, and – partly due to Link’s famously cranky character and disposition - almost outsider artist’s vision. But as photography has moved on, Link’s work is increasingly seen and appreciated for the degree to which he controlled, planned, and constructed each image, prefiguring such well known contemporary artists as Gregory Crewdson and Jeff Wall, both of whom willingly acknowledge their interest in and appreciation of Link’s work. LinDor Arts is pleased to present a sale of a collection of over 150 O. Winston Link photographs printed in his NY studio. The show will open at 11 am October 2. The photographs range in size from 8x10 to 20x24. The photos will be offered below market price and will be sold first come first serve. The unsold works will be up thru Thursday October 29. 306 First Street, Roanoke, VA | 540.400.8442 14 |

Canyonland Suite #1 By Vera Dickerson Market Gallery is featuring the work of three new members in September: Tracy Budd, Vera Dickerson and Gina Louthian Stanley. Also showing is current member Rod Adams. Please join us to meet and chat with the artists at their Art by Night opening reception on Friday, September 4, 5:30 to 9 p.m. The artists will discuss their work between 6 and 7 p.m. Tracy Budd is featuring recent acrylic paintings inspired by her travels to the Maine Coast. She is influenced by light and shadow and she works to translate her ideas and subject matter into an altered atmo-

sphere. With each new painting that Budd creates she considers, “Am I creating a sophisticated surface, that best portrays my ideas? For me, it’s all about the surface.” Vera Dickerson’s art work is a personal expression containing something of her hand and mind. She looks beyond simple picture making to put emotional connections in her art. Her work is a mix of watermedia and artist-created collage papers. Dickerson notes, “After years of academic training as an artist, and subsequent teaching, I now find great pleasure in combining this with the joy of new places and people.” Gina Louthian Stanley’s new

work is themed “Nature Prevails”. She explores color harmonies and surface textures through subtle changes in color, composition, method of application and surface preparation. Her primary medium is encaustic. As she notes, “No matter how hard we try to control, engineer, modify, or change events and circumstances, tangible objects, and even emotions, ‘Nature Prevails’.” Rod Adams is stepping outside his preferred medium of watercolor in a big way with a 10 feet by 6 feet western mural, a commission that will eventually find its home in Ohio. As a Featured Artist he’ll give us a taste of this wall mural with large watercolor and oil paintings. The Market Gallery, a regional artists’ cooperative, is open 10 am to 5:30 pm Tuesday Saturday. And is located at 23 Salem Avenue, Roanoke, VA 24011, the corner of Wall St and Salem Ave in Roanoke’s historic downtown market. Taste CITY OF THE

Have you ever walked into a shop and felt that tingle of pleasant curiosity? That’s exactly how I felt when I visited Eli’s Provisions, which occupies the former Sumdat Farms shop on the city market. Brothers Robert and Lawson Jaeger formed a partnership and opened two stores together, Eli’s Provisions and The Candy Store on Campbell Avenue. The Jaeger brothers returned to their native Roanoke in 2013.

Robert and Lawson have come home equipped with skills that will make them successful. Lawson focused his time in advertising while living in both Knoxville and Nashville; Robert settled for awhile in Connecticut and New York working in fashion marketing and public relations. This combined experience in marketing is evident in the way Eli’s is designed and in the products that they have chosen to represent. Maybe it’s my obsessive compulsive need to straighten shelves that prevents me from enjoying shopping. It could even be that sometimes I am distracted by too many candle scents next to food items, or over the top decorations that hide the products that are for sale. None of these things present themselves in Eli’s. Instead, rows of perfectly pointed jars and packages fill shiny nickel plated shelves. Prices are consistently printed on the items leaving no guess work. There is not a speck of dust, and food items are grouped together in harmonious categories. What decorations are evident simply complete the stories that the food and beverages are allowed to I am excited that I can get Edward’s Ham products without having to pay for shipping, which I have been known to do. Edward’s is a wonderful company from Surry, Virginia specializing in pork products. In every direction, Eli’s has Virginia products for reasonable prices. There are local eggs from Four Corner Farms, cheese from Mountain View Farms, delicious salami by Olli Salumeria, free

range beef from Spark Family Farms, beautiful crackers by Firehook and Savannah Grace Southern Snacks, candy from Nancy’s Candy and Virginia Chocolate Company, coffee from both Red Rooster and Mattie’s Mountain. Something I use often is Herbs de Provence and Eli’s has it, packed by the Shenandoah Spice Company. There is also a large selection of many other herbs to choose from. Any shop that specializes in Virginia products must have peanuts and Eli’s has them; The Peanut Shop, Blue Crab Bay, Whitley’s and Belmond are all represented. This is just a sample of what is available for purchase or to include in a custom gift basket. Eli’s Provisions stocks 350 different beers, many from local and/or crafter breweries. Near the register are four taps and the selection in August included two Parkway Brewery brews, one Chaos Mountain and one 21st Amendment, which is the only brewery that is located out of state. You can buy tap beer by the growler and they have those available in 32 and 64 ounces. In the alcove to the left, racks of wine are displayed. I found many beautiful Virginia wines and ciders, as well as some lovely imports including Port and dessert wines. The lighting makes it easy to read the tiny print on the bottles and Eli’s gives a 10% discount for four bottles of wine. That is a pretty sweet deal for wine drinkers in Roanoke. The bottom line: Eli’s Provisions is filling a niche. The store is accessible, clean, bright, well stocked and well priced. Robert is an attentive shop keeper and will go the extra mile to make sure that you are happy. This store is definitely my new favorite playground. Elizabeth Matthews Jones lives in the Raleigh Court neighborhood of Roanoke with herhusband, dogs, cat and seven chickens. There are many things that she loves about the Blue Ridge Region, including the variety of activities and agricultural products within a few miles of home. She is especially fond of camping and winery tours, especially if she can enjoy both at the same time! 20 |
