AMERICAN HEART BALL

B

By Gene Marrano

Heart Ball is “an opportunity to party with a purpose”

efore you put on that evening gown, tuxedo or other snappy formal wear and head out to the “Heart Ball” on February 13 at Hotel Roanoke, consider the cold, hard facts: heart disease is the number one killer in the U.S. of both men and women, ahead of cancer. (Stroke has dropped to number five overall) More than 300,000 Americans died from heart failure in 2014. Heart disease kills a higher percentage of blacks than whites or Hispanics. The rate of heart failure-related deaths between the ages of 45 to 64 and those over 85 has increased over time – a nod to an aging population. Those statistics come from the American Heart Association (see heart.org) which also promotes heart-healthy living through its Go Red for Women program. 1 in 3 women die from cardiovascular diseases and stroke every year according to the AHA. That’s now higher than the death rate for men. 44 million women in the U.S. alone are affected by heart disease. A stunning 80 percent of heart disease and stroke events may be prevented by lifestyle changes and education. The American Heart Association Roanoke chapter sponsors an annual Heart Ball – on the eve of Valentine’s Day this year - always with a different theme. It’s a fundraiser and an opportunity to bring awareness to the issue of heart disease. Those who have survived a cardiovascular incident will be on hand. Some will tell survivor stories – the “Open Your Heart” moments. Nationwide, Heart Ball events raised 51 million dollars last year.

FEBRUARY 2016

Cindy Lou Todd isn’t shy about telling her heart attack story: “I [just] felt like I had bad indigestion … I didn’t feel like I had an elephant on my chest,” she recalled. But an EKG in an ambulance on the way to the hospital confirmed she indeed

was having a heart attack. Todd’s mother died of heart disease at the age of 57 and since her own incident her perspective has changed: “My experience changes the way I look at things; I live every day to the fullest.”

Heart Survivor, Cindy Lou Todd with her daughter, Holly Legg

Senior development director Elizabeth Vail calls the Heart Ball at Hotel Roanoke on February 13 (5:30pm to midnight) “a wonderful opportunity to get together with friends and colleagues. We always celebrate survivors – an opportunity to party with a purpose.” There’s dinner, cocktails, a silent and live auction (handled by Woltz and Associates), with dancing to music by The Wallers. Trips, jewelry, restaurant meals and gift certificates are some of the items up for auction. Tickets are $150 per person. Events like the Heart Ball are perhaps as much about awareness as they are about fundraising. “There certainly is a problem that we’re working on in terms of heart disease and stroke,” says Vail; “we’ve made wonderful strides with the research that’s been developed and new [medical] advancements, enabling people to live longer, healthier lives.” This year’s Heart Ball is called “A Night at the Oscars,” with attendees able to walk a red carpet into the event. “We enjoy developing that theme,” says Vail of the black tie optional soiree. The annual Heart Walk in October is the Roanoke chapter’s largest event; in May the Go Red for Women luncheon (May 12, Hotel Roanoke) again puts the spotlight on heart disease as it relates to women. People really look forward to this event,” says Vail of the annual Heart Ball, “and we’re excited to have it in February during American Heart Month. Heart disease touches all.” (See www.roanokevaheartball/ heart.org or the Facebook page for more information and tickets for the Feb. 13 Heart Ball) Gene Marrano is an award-winning print, news radio and cable TV journalist who has reported about people, places and events in the Roanoke Valley for almost twenty years. He has written for many local publications including CITY Magazine - and for media outlets elsewhere during that time. He's also an avid runner who makes good use of Roanoke's growing greenway system - and recently has "dabbled" in the creative arts - appearing in several plays and painting.

The Knights and Gil Shaham, violin

Friday, February 26, 2016, 7:30 p.m. Anne and Ellen Fife Theatre, Street and Davis Performance Hall, Moss Arts Center, Blacksburg, VA | 540.231.5300 | artscenter.vt.edu

The Knights orchestra joins acclaimed violinist Gil Shaham for a program featuring music of Rebel, Prokofiev, and Beethoven’s Symphony no. 3, Eroica. Shaham, one of the foremost violinists of our time, received the coveted Avery Fisher Prize in 2008 and in 2012 was named Instrumen-

talist of the Year by Musical America, which cited the “special kind of humanism” with which his performances are imbued. The Knights are an orchestral collective dedicated to transforming the concert experience. Engaging listeners and defying boundaries with programs that showcase the players’ roots in the classical tradition and passion for musical discovery, The Knights have, as The New Yorker observes, “become one of Brooklyn’s sterling cultural products, [and] are known far beyond the borough for their relaxed virtuosity and expansive repertory.”

Fortune, Courage, Love: Arts of Africa’s Akan and Kuba Kingdoms from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, a blockbuster exhibition of African artworks from the VMFA’s permanent collection, will open at Piedmont Arts on January 16.

A curatorial partnership between William King Museum of Art Curator, Leila Cartier, and VMFA’s Curator of African Art, Richard Woodward, has resulted in an exhibition that brings together art from the ancient empire of Mali, the Akan kingdoms of Ghana, and the Kuba kingdom in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. “The arts of Ghana’s Akan and the Congo’s Kuba kingdoms are elaborate in design and visually stunning,” said Woodward. “As Curator of African Art, I am thrilled that such an important and beautiful part of the collection will be shared with the Piedmont Arts audience.” Visitors from around the Commonwealth will have the opportunity to see African objects from the VMFA’s collection first-hand. Included in the exhibition are elements of royal regalia, dozens of gold weights – small figures and objects that often communicate proverbs and are used to weigh out gold dust – masks and other ceremonial objects, sculptures, and three spectacular Kente Cloths. One of several in the works, this Statewide project has developed from a seed of an idea into an exhibition that has traveled to three VMFA Statewide Partner museums: William King Museum in Abingdon; Taubman Museum of Art in Roanoke; and Piedmont Arts in Martinsville. “We are excited to work once again with Piedmont Arts to bring the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts to the Martinsville region,” said Jeffrey Allison, VMFA’s Paul Mellon Collection educator and manager of statewide programs and exhibitions. “As one of our oldest Statewide Partners, we have a long history of sharing VMFA organized exhibitions, programs and performances for all audiences.” Gina Collins, VMFA’s exhibitions project coordinator added, “The VMFA is thrilled to once again partner with Piedmont Arts. Our Statewide Partnership program is an essential part of our mission and goals. It allows us to bring art from our global collection to all parts of the Commonwealth.” Fortune, Courage, Love: Arts of Africa’s Akan and Kuba Kingdoms from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts will be on display at Piedmont Arts January 16 – March 5, 2016. Annie Moore’s Tavern

FOCUSED ON FRESH FOOD AND WARM HOSPITALIT Y

Chicken Paillard

By Elizabeth Matthew Jones I love corned beef brisket the way many of my friends love meatloaf. For me it is the ultimate comfort food. It is not something you see on a standard menu, apart from a Reuben sandwich. I don’t even believe I would order it as an entrée since I can prepare it better at home. So, when James and Dawn Ferrone placed slices of corned beef in front of me, I have to admit I was skeptical. Most pubs boil their beef, losing the depth of flavor to the water. Not so in the Annie Moore’s kitchen. This corned beef brisket is slow roasted, which allows the juices to incorporate back into the meat. Not a touch of the flavor is diminished. The color is bright, the texture is pure tenderness and the spices are perfectly balanced. Four delicious slices and I’m sold. When the Ferrones took over Annie Moore’s Pub in 2015, rumors of menu and quality changes hit the streets and internet. Bloggers and website visitors commented on the changes, to which Dawn Ferrone replied with grace. Most of the rumors where unfounded, and those who questioned the future of Annie Moore’s Pub-now known as Annie Moore’s Tavern-have come back. The comments have become more positive than negative, and the changes to the interior and the menu work beautifully. Subtle modifications in decor enhance the lovely art glass windows and dark wood paneling. The seating is intimate; clean and comfortable with wide booths and comfortable tables. Monthly ‘Take over the Tap’ events feature local breweries or wineries, as well

Shepherd’s Pie

as occasional bourbon tastings. Music has a definite spotlight with a good line up of talent and lively Irish jam sessions every Monday night. The glass lined bar absorbs and reflects light and takes you back to earlier times when the bar and the barkeeper were the focal point of a tavern. James and Dawn run their businesses with hospitality and fresh, clean food as their focal point. A creative chef and manager, James is a graduate of the Hyde Park Culinary Institute of America. His father opened a butcher shop in Queens in 1958 and James learned many aspects of the business, becoming an experienced butcher at an early age. Dawn is a pragmatic business manager with a hospitality background, working in upstate New York and Roanoke. Their first restaurant endeavor, Remini’s, opened in 2011 and is a much frequented spot on Brambleton Avenue serving classic Italian cuisine in a casual atmosphere. To say that the Ferrones are hard working people would be an understatement; they work both restaurants every day and many evenings deep into the night. Yes, the menu at Annie Moore’s has changed, but only a bit. The most popular items that the original owner, Chip Moore, served are still on the menu: Corned Beef and Cabbage, Fish and Chips, Shepherd’s Pie, Rueben sandwiches, burgers and fried goat cheese. Some items that were not so popular have gone by the wayside, but have been replaced with some lighter, more popular items. There are numerous appetizers and salads to choose from, and some new entrees as well. Freshly steamed Shrimp Cocktail has been added to the appetizer menu; hand-cut Ribeye and Filet Mignon steaks have been added to the entrée menu, as well as

stuffed shrimp, trout, calamari and prime rib on the weekends. One new entrée in particular is the Chicken Paillard; thinly filleted and tenderized chicken breast, grilled with herbs and olive oil and served with crisp sautéed vegetables. Combos are now available with half-sized portions of an entrée or a sandwich for lunch, served with homemade soup or a salad for a very reasonable price. I highly recommend that we all try the new Annie Moore’s Tavern and give James and Dawn our feedback. These are conscientious business owners, and as Dawn told me, they are in this for us. This business is a family affair, and they are fully vested in giving us the best they have to offer. They tell me that they are passionate about food and about making their patrons happy. After one visit, I feel confident you will agree! Hours of Operation: Monday~Thursday 11am-10pm Friday~Saturday 11am-11pm Sunday 11am-8pm Sunday Brunch 11am-3pm Happy Hour Weekdays 4-7pm Annie Moore’s Irish Tavern 3555 Electric Road located at West Village (540)904-5466 | www.anniemoorestavern.com Elizabeth Matthews Jones lives in the Raleigh Court neighborhood of Roanoke with her husband, dogs, cat and seven chickens. There are many things that she loves about the Blue Ridge Region, including the variety of activities and agricultural products within a few miles of home. She is especially fond of camping and winery tours, especially if she can enjoy both at the same time! FEBRUARY 2016
