RUBY ANNIVERSARY GALA

A

murderous barber and a legendary heroine – Opera Roanoke’s 40th season includes a production of Sweeney Todd (previously a Broadway musical) on October 30 and November 1; as well as the classic La Traviata next April 8/10. Opera Roanoke successfully matched a $100,000 grant challenge earlier this year and at press time was working towards completion of another

$40,000 challenge. With all of that going on its time to party and the company will do just that: Opera Roanoke’s Ruby Anniversary Gala is on October 24th at the Taubman Museum of Art from 6-10pm. There’s food from Blue Ridge Catering and musical excerpts from the upcoming production of Sweeney Todd sung by members of the cast that will be in rehearsal by then. Longtime supporter Sheila Strauss will be honored; a fashion show by Frances Kahn and a live auction featuring jewelry, overnight trips, dining experiences, private plane trips etc. by Woltz & Associates is also featured. See operaroanoke.org for more about individual tickets and tables available for the black tie optional gala. Executive director Linda Gavel Webb says the 2015-2016 season is dedicated to the memory of Alison Parker and Adam Ward, the WDBJ-7 journalists gunned down on live television in August. “They were friends of ours,” says Webb, “and had interviewed several of us over the years.” TV reporter Alison Parker in particular “was an arts and culture nut,” according to Webb. Her father Andy in fact was slated to

appear as an extra in Opera Roanoke’s production of The Pirates of Penzance a few years ago before having to bow out; Alison’s parents were also at the Broadway debut of Sweeney Todd 35 years ago. “She would squeal with delight whenever she could do a story on us,” recalls Webb. Sweeney Todd, which debuted on Broadway nearly 35 years ago starring Angela Lansbury, is technically not an opera but artistic director Scott Williamson says it includes plenty of worthy operatic moments. Opera Roanoke favorite Carla Dirlikov (Carmen, The Flying Dutchman, Julius Caesar) is back as Mrs. Lovett, opposite baritone Corey Crider as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street. “When an opera company does the singing [in Sweeney Todd or other Broadway musicals] it’s unbelievably great,” Webb promises. Williamson notes that Stephen Sondheim musicals like Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods and A Little Night Music are very suitable to operatic interpretation. “There’s something about his style and the depth of substance.” Members of the Roanoke Symphony that will perform during Sweeney Todd “are

excited about it,” as well. Williamson created the Apprentice Artist Program at Opera Roanoke in 2011, and some of the current apprentices will appear in Sweeney Todd. La Traviata is one of those opera chestnuts that the local troupe brings back every year – and this production next April stars Scott Williamson’s wife Amy Cofield Williamson, a soprano, as Violetta Valery. She understudied to the famed Renee Fleming in a Houston Grand Opera production and has sung her signature role across the country and in Europe. Baritone Levi Hernandez, who appeared on stage at Jefferson Center with Opera Roanoke earlier this year (Cinderella) is back as well. Scott Williamson, also an opera singer, in fact met his wife during a production in Maryland where both were cast. “I truly believe ‘Traviata’ is one of the pillars of Western civilization, it is that good and that important,” he claims, perhaps with a touch of hyperbole. “It really is a classic,” notes Webb, “and Roanoke audiences are in for an incredible treat.” Opera Roanoke prides itself on keeping ticket prices at a reasonable level; that’s where matching grants and fundraisers like the 40th anniversary gala can make up the difference. After

all says Webb, “there’s no point in putting on an opera if nobody comes.” “This is going to be a fantastic season,” vows Webb, who is winding up her first year as executive director after a long career at United Way and then an extended personal hiatus. “It’s a wonderful thing to serve – I love it.” As for those who may consider lastminute tickets for the October 24 gala: “it’s going to be a beautiful event,” she promises.

MARCH OF DIMES SIGNATURE CHEF CHALLENGE The Blue Ridge Division of the March of Dimes will be hosting the 7th annual Signature Chef Challenge on Sunday, October 25. All of the festivities will be showcased at the City Market Building in downtown Roanoke! This event will once again bring awareness to the national problem of premature birth. Prematurity is the leading cause of death for children under the age of five. The March of Dimes seeks to find the causes and cures for prematurity, which is why this yearly fund-raising event is so very important.

Blue Ridge Potters Guild October 16 - 18, 2015 Show and Sale

Roanoke will celebrate the ancient art of pottery again this fall as the Blue Ridge Potters Guild holds its 16th Annual Show and Sale, October 16, 17 and 18, at Patrick Henry High School. This is the largest all-pottery show in Virginia with 70 potters exhibiting and selling their work. The theme for this year’s show is “Journeys,” that may be interpreted as traveling toward artistic achievement, places visited, achieving professional goals and more. The potters exhibiting in this year’s show have made the journey from their first experience with clay to where they are today. At this year’s show, members of the Blue Ridge Potters Guild will demonstrate how a hunk of clay becomes a finished piece. Because potters have their own style, each piece is unique. Visitors to the show’s demonstration area will see various techniques such as handthrown, hand-built and sculpted clay art throughout

Many of the Roanoke Valley area’s leading artists live and create in scenic Botetourt County. This fall, Eight Botetourt artists along with four guest artists have joined with the Botetourt County Office of Tourism for the fifth annual self-guided driving tour of artists’ working studios. Enjoy this free event and rare opportunity to visit the artists in their studios and homes, viewing rich and varied works both completed and in progress. This is your opportunity to purchase original paintings, sculpture and jewelry directly from the artists. All while learning about the tools and materials used to create them. Whether you are a collector, or simply curious about art, this is an opportunity to converse one-on-one with artists while enjoying the added pleasure of the beautiful fall foliage and landscape of Botetourt County. The artist’s studios are located throughout the county so look for the Open Studios logo on signs along your way. Be sure to pick up your “passport card” at your first stop and have your card stamped at each studio you visit. Then leave the card at the last studio visited and be entered

the day on Saturday and Sunday The Kids Korner, open Saturday and Sunday, will give children the opportunity to try their own talents at shaping clay. Potters are happy to answer questions in their booths and discuss topics such as the various glaze finishes that result from electric , gas, wood, raku firing and more. In the Gallery section of the show, potters will exhibit works that best represent the theme. This year’s Gallery will be judged by Chris Gryder, an accomplished potter. Annual show attendance has grown to more than 3,000, and people return to the all-pottery show and sale year after year. Mark your calendar for October 16-18 at Patrick Henry High School, 2102 Grandin Road SW, Roanoke, Virginia. You won’t want to miss this opportunity to start your holiday shopping or find something special for yourself. You will be hard-pressed to walk away empty-handed!

Tobacco People October 24 10am-5pm

Tobacco People, (a photographic essay by Sarah Hazlegrove), is an expanding archive of images and video, documenting the families and communities that cultivate tobacco around the world. Tobacco People also explores the historical connection we have to the plant and how it shaped and continues to shape our world. Three Roanoke Museums: The Taubman Museum Of Art, The O. Winston Link Museum and the Harrison Museum Of African American Culture will be presenting selected elements of Hazlegrove’s Project Tobacco People, in collaboration with the Taubman Museum of Art. Taken from the Announcement for the Taubman Museum of Art: “Sarah Hazlegrove: Tobacco People documents an intensive four year international journey that sent one of the region’s foremost photographers around the world documenting the changing faces of individuals and communities engaged in the rapidly disappearing world of tobacco cultivation. Shot entirely on location without the aid of specialized equipment or postproduction digital effects, Hazlegrove’s dramatic and moving images combine elements of the formal portraiture of Richard Avedon with the journalistic style of photo documentary legends Walker Evans and Robert Frank. From sweeping landscapes to captivating glimpses of everyday commerce and intimate portraits, Hazlegrove investigates, captures, and celebrates the differences and universalities of peoples engaged in and societies built around centuries old customs and practices surrounding the lifecycle of tobacco.” Sarah Hazlegrove: Tobacco People is curated by Brian Sieveking, Adjunct Curator of Folk and Outsider Art and will be on view in the Taubman Museum of Art’s David R. and Susan S. Goode Gallery, the Optical Cable Corporation Gallery and the Media Lab from October 10, 2015 through March 27, 2015.
