community spotlight NORMAN ROCKWELL AT THE TAUBMAN

By Gene Marrano
New Taubman gallery debuts with Opening Shindy
nce it was a space planned for an IMAX theater, plans that were abandoned before the Taubman Museum of Art opened in 2008. It sat dormant for years until a major remodeling just completed turned it into a special exhibition gallery with a separate entrance so it can be used for ticketed events at the otherwise free admission museum. Now that “Special Exhibition Gallery” as it is currently called – the Taubman staff would be happy to talk about selling the naming rights – debuts to the public on March 20 with American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell that has been organized by the Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, Massachusetts. More than 100 original works from the popular American artist, best known for his iconic covers of The Saturday Evening Post, will be on loan from the Norman Rockwell Museum in Massachusetts through June 12. The night before the opening (on March 19) the Taubman is staging the “Opening Shindy”, celebrating the new gallery opening while focusing on the 1940’s-era Rockwell, specifically targeting 1949. American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell spans more years than that but focusing on the 40’s
museum members can view American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell for free while non-member adults will pay $12.50. DiGangi says the Taubman sees the new Special Exhibition Gallery as a way to lure more people to the downtown Roanoke museum, including those “[throughout] the mid-Atlantic … increasing the profile for the museum.” Amy G. Moorefield, the Deputy Director of Exhibitions and Collections, says 55 “major paintings”, 323 covers from The Saturday Evening Post, and photographs will be on display until June 12. “It’s a very large exhibition,” she notes. “Norman Rockwell’s paintings are considered national icons.”

means live big band tunes from the Star Dusters and the opportunity to retro dress. “He was still prolific in the [19]60’s and 70’s,” notes Holly DiGangi, the Deputy Director of Development at the Taubman. The Opening Shindy includes “Americana Hors d’oeuvres” and a sneak peek at the Rockwell exhibit, with spotlight tours available

for those wanting to know more about the artist and the America he chronicled. Tickets to the Shindy are $49 in advance by March 18; $59 at the door. (See taubmanmuseum. org for advance tickets.) There will be a themed photo booth to snap some memorable group pictures and 40’s-era dance instruction during the early cocktail hour. Rockwell held war bond parties during World War II and DiGangi says the Opening Shindy is “playing off of that [theme].” The Opening Shindy, a kickoff party and a fundraiser (remodeling the new 3,400 square foot gallery cost more than a million dollars), is from 7-11pm. It also costs money to borrow, ship and insure the Rockwell exhibition. Once it opens,
Major construction for the new gallery ended a few months ago, with final touches to the flooring and a period of acclimatizing then taking place, making sure the humidity levels, temperature and other factors were acceptable. The exhibit will be hung in early March before the Opening Shindy and the exhibit debut. DiGangi thinks visitors will be impressed by “the intricacy” of Rockwell’s work when viewing the originals – not just a print or a magazine cover. “We’re super-excited,” she exclaims. The Taubman Museum staff figures the public will also feel that way when they view American Chronicles: The Art of Norman Rockwell.

Roanoke Ballet Theatre Roanoke Ballet Theatre (RBT) will be performing on April 2 at 11:30 and 1pm at The Taubman Museum of Art’s exhibit, “Norman Rockwell Suite,” based on several of Norman Rockwell’s paintings such as the “Brass Merchant” and “The girl in the Mirror. RBT will present this performance in conjunction with

From the days of playing local juke joints, to headlining major festivals, JJ Grey remains an unfettered, blissful performer, singing with a blue-collared spirit over the bone-deep grooves of his compositions. His presence before an audience is something startling and immediate. At times a funk rave-up, other times a sort of mass-absolution for the mortal weaknesses that make him and his audience human. Three two-night performances are scheduled during the 2016 season as The Music Series at Mill Mountain Theatre returns next month. After a successful inaugural season last year with the two one-night performances selling out, Mill Mountain Theatre will expand the music series to two nights beginning with The Music of Motown on March 11 and 12. Mill Mountain Theatre will bring more than 30 of Motown’s iconic hits to the Trinkle Main Stage with two consecutive nights of top tunes beginning March 11. The audience can enjoy their favorite beverages in the informal concert setting as they are entertained with lively music that includes “Mr. Postman,” a number one chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1961 along with “You Can’t Hurry Love,” one of 10 number one hits by The Supremes. “For the past three years, Mill Mountain Theatre has been fortunate to have Seth Davis as our resident musical director. Once again, the audience will get to experience his incredible talent as his masterful music direction and arranging will be heard throughout The Music of Motown,” Ginger Poole, producing artistic director for Mill Mountain Theatre said. millmountain.org | (540) 342-5740

One in 14 high school students in the Roanoke area have reported trying heroin at least once. Alcohol and substance abuse among youth is on the rise in the Roanoke Valley. Heroin overdose deaths in Virginia nearly doubled from 2011-2013. The Roanoke Youth Area Substance Abuse Coalition states that drug use, including heroin, is not limited to any racial or socioeconomic group and therefore is more than an inner city dilemma. Roanoke Children’s Theatre will start a conversation on teen substance abuse, including heroin, with their next production of The Ice Cream Man, a play targeting substance abuse, as part of the RCT4TEENS program. The Ice Cream Man will run from March 10-13, 2016 in the Dumas Center (108 First Street NW). The Ice Cream Man rings with honesty, authenticity, humor and poignancy - continuing with RCT’s mission to use theatre to educate parents and teens about issues they are facing. This play follows the lives of high school students caught in the larger web of school, parties, pressures and the ever-present temptation of drugs and alcohol. “I am proud that RCT [through the medium of live theatre] will provide the platform, the excuse, the time and place to learn about substance abuse,” said Pat Wilhelms, Artistic Director of RCT. “Health care professionals will be on hand after every performance. Together we can raise healthy kids whose dreams can come true.” roanokechildrenstheatre.org | (540) 400-7795 MARCH 2016

Following the breakthrough commercial and critical success of his two GRAMMY-winning R&B-oriented Black Radio albums, Robert Glasper returns to his acoustic jazz roots with Covered (The Robert Glasper Trio recorded live at Capitol Studios). The album reunites Glasper with bassist Vicente Archer and drummer Damion Reid, reforming the trio that created his first two Blue Notes releases, Canvas (2005) and In My Element (2007).

Chris Eldridge & Julian Lage
Their first full-length debut album, Avalon, is a mix of originals and covers that illustrate the breadth of the American songbook as Lage and Eldridge see it, incorporating bluegrass, country, gospel, old-time music and jazz. The record serves as a snapshot of this duo’s repertoire, circa 2014; a portrait of a burgeoning friendship between two virtuosic players; and, at its heart, a pristinely recorded love letter to the sound of the acoustic guitar.

Reactions in Rhythm Friday, March 4, 5:00PM
For the first time, Gallery 202 is hosting a Visiting Guest Artists Event, in an effort to offer a more extensive artist collective for the community, reaching deeper into the Roanoke region, the Blue Ridge and surrounding cities in Virginia. The March exhibit themed, REACTIONS in RHYTHM will kick off on Friday’s Art by Night, MARCH 4th, 2016 at 5pm. Four Guest Artists exhibiting are Jim Burtch, Ina Moss, Charles E. Cullen, and Cory Greer. Their theme for the March show is, ‘Reactions in Rhythm’, artwork inspired by music! acebook.com/202MarketSquareGallery | 540. 798.9066 Ina Moss began drawing and designing in elementary school when neighbors and classmates commissioned her for quilt and cake designs, as well as homework assignments. As a young adult she traded green stamps for her first oil painting set and sold her work in local malls and private shows throughout Northern VA. She participated in various workshops with distinguished artists and studied drawing, design and watercolor at The University of Mary Washington. Although, she is proficient in representational paintings, Ina finds abstract art more rewarding and exciting, as it allows her to create without restrictions. Ina finds inspiration for her creations from her travel throughout the US and from her own environment. She is fascinated with color, light and shadows and each react on various substrates.
"The Proposal" by Ina Moss
Born and raised in Roanoke, Virginia, Charles E. Cullen found an early fascination with film and storytelling. At age 8, he created his first film with his father’s camera. Titled “The Land Of Oz”, the film was comprised of five minutes of a dummy falling off the roof of the Cullen family home. Looking to exhibit his work, Charles screened the film for his friends on the front of the kitchen refrigerator. “Gold Rush” by Jim Burtch
“Untitled” by Charles E. Cullen
“I always found a joy in lesser arts like comic books, action figure sculpts, monster movies and the like. I ended up taking art to a musical level in my late teens and have continued until present day with being involved in live bands. I have been involved in film making and helped produce, shoot, act, design and build props for an upcoming psychological thriller titled DEADLINES. I have also recently been involved with a great local art group called Against the Grains Artist Collective which had a recent show at the Salem museum. My plans for the future are to continue using my creativity as a way to keep people entertained/happy and provide a healthy outlet to express myself in the way that only art can.” Cory Greer “Three Special Letters” by Cory Greer
Jim Burch was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, but spent most his childhood growing up in Roanoke and Salem. From 1984 to 2000, Jim was best known as a local fixture in the local independent music scene as the principle singer/ songwriter in a variety of bands.. Jim’s formal tutelage in art came very early on from his mother, who taught children’s classes in addition to having solo art shows all over the United States. After not painting for many years, personal tragedy led Jim to reach for a paint brush and let his creativity out. He was very surprised to find so much solace, peace and enjoyment from creating again. In addition to art, Jim Burtch is also an avid photographer. “I feel a lot like the guitarist, Link Wray, in the sense that we are both proud to be primitive’s. Most of my inspiration in creating come from rich colors and wherever my imagination leads me. I have had a lifelong love for offbeat music and books and I channel that into my artwork. I am very drawn to Hispanic and West Indies art, with their wonderful murals, mosaics and crafts and that is very influential in my process. Being exposed to nature and my young children also play largely in my inspirational process when painting. People are either drawn or repelled by my style and that is fine by me. I create for myself first and everyone else second.” 16 |

"There's been a gap in our city," said Bruce C. Bryan, president of Down by Downtown. "The old music hall was a magical place and, as an involved part of our community, I frequently hear how much people miss it." A wide array of musical acts will be booked at the Spot on Kirk, which seats as many as 130 people: Americana, folk, singer‐songwriter, jazz, R&B, and more. In addition to live music, the community will have access to the space for other influential events. Organizers hope to see everything from poetry readings to lectures, documentary showings to receptions booked at the Spot on Kirk. The Spot on Kirk will fuel Roanoke’s local economy. With music fans traveling to the valley for events, nearby hotels, restaurants, and retail stores will see a boost in business. Strengthening the live music scene that already exists will also attract more young professionals to live and work in the area. “We want to recreate the best of what once existed in that space,” said Bryan, “We believe the venue will be sustainable and the impact on the surrounding area will be positive.” The Spot is now booking live musical acts for the Spring. For more information about the venue, visit www.theSpotonKirk.org or find us on Facebook and Twitter.
