KATHERINE BYRNES November 9 • 7pm

Tucson’s own award-winning singer/producer Katherine Byrnes presents Piece of My Heart, her loving concert tribute to Janis Joplin and the musical zeitgeist of the psychedelic sixties. Many tribute shows aim to recreate in detail the recordings of our favorite performers, but Katherine and her band instead aim to recreate the spontaneity and vitality of the era, bringing their own voice and interpretation to iconic songs like “Me and Bobby McGee,” “Tell Mama,” and of course, “Piece of My Heart,” as well as songs by Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Band, and more. They bring a refreshing energy and presence to the tribute genre.

COMEDY OF

December 14 • 7pm Yakov Smirnoff is a legend in American comedy. After escaping communist Soviet Russia in the 1970’s, he came to this country with nothing but a dream. Not even knowing the language, Yakov humbly began working as a bartender at the famous Grossinger’s Catskill Resort in New York where he was able to tell jokes each night after his shifts. As his English improved, he quickly grew in popularity. He would then make the move to Los Angeles where the owner of The Comedy Store, Mitzi Shore, took him under her wing. His lovable view of life through the eyes of a poor immigrant captured the hearts of America. He soared to the top of the comedy world performing on The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson and countless other television programs, including as a regular character on Night Court, and the star of his very own show, named after his famous catch-phrase, What a Country! He branched out to the big screen where he starred in movies with Tom Hanks, Robin Williams, and Jack Nicholson, to name a few. Yakov Smirnoff is an iconic comedian, movie star, best-selling author, and most recently, he has earned a Doctorate Degree in Leadership from Pepperdine University. Living a life that’s as exciting as ever, Yakov has married his sweetheart, is currently touring the world doing stand-up, and even has his very own theater in Branson, Missouri. With the heart of a dreamer, Yakov Smirnoff has made the impossible possible and continues to inspire others with his message that America is still “What a Country!” Keep an eye out for his brand-new podcast on ABC radio, look for him at a theater near you, and stay tuned for what Dr. Yakov does next!

JANUARY 27

January 27 • 7pm The Hot Club of San Francisco is an ensemble of accomplished and versatile musicians celebrating the music of Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli’s pioneering Hot Club de France with style and panache. The HCSF borrows the instrumentation of violin, bass and guitars from the original Hot Club while breathing new life into the music with innovative arrangements of classic tunes and original compositions from the group’s superb lead guitarist Paul Mehling. Featuring the amazing violin of twice Grammy Award winner Evan Price and a swinging rhythm section. To hear the ensemble live, or on any of their 11 albums, is to be carried back to the 1930s and the small, smoky jazz clubs of Paris and the refined lounges of the famous Hotel Ritz. Often called gypsy jazz, the music of The Hot Club of San Francisco has entranced audiences around the globe for over 20 years. Acoustic Guitar hailed the group’s playing as “intricate, scorching and often brilliant.” With frequent international and national tours – from Iceland to Lincoln Center and the Monterey Jazz Festival – The Hot Club of San Francisco keeps this historic music fresh and alive.

HIROYA TSUKAMOTO April 7 • 7pm

Hiroya Tsukamoto is an innovative guitarist and composer who fuses folk, jazz, and world music. Born and raised in Japan, in 2000 he received a scholarship to Berklee College of Music and came to the U.S. “His brand of finger style guitar is so intricate, and so blazingly fast at the same time, I kept imagining how many clones I would need to make of myself to accurately replicate his sound. One song that drove that point home was his set opener, “From Coast to Coast,” a song that had some of the fastest harmonic runs I’ve heard,” wrote Trevor Lewis of the Rochester City News. Tsukamoto’s personable and genuine approach transfixes his audience and almost transcends his capabilities as a guitarist. Audience members will be mesmerized; Tsukamoto plays with an effortless skill on the guitar and a repertoire that will have you traveling the world, not to mention experiencing new sounds with his own compositions.
