Something for Everyone, All Summer Long

From the shores of Puerto Peñasco, Mexico to the exciting echoes of Chase Field in Phoenix, summer recreation with GVR has an option for everyone. Whether you like performances, day trips, dances, leisure education classes, or fitness—there’s something to fit every budget and inclination.

The season kicks off with the Civic Orchestra of Tucson presenting their concert ‘Water in the Desert’ on May 3 to prepare for the monsoon. A couple of days later is the first of three VIP baseball day trips to Chase Field in Phoenix to see the Diamondbacks take on the NY Mets.

The Mets game is sold out, but there’s still room on the bus to see matchups with the Houston Astros on July 23 and the LA Dodgers on September 25. The VIP baseball outing includes transportation, club-level access with shorter lines, private bathrooms, and spacious seating, along with all-you-can-eat food through the seventh inning.

Celebrate mom with a special Mother’s Day Brunch and Mimosas on May 10. Or, wait a couple of days to enjoy the first of the Paint & Sips, Spring Floral, on May 13. Both events include two beverages. On July 11, another Paint & Sip takes place celebrating the beauty of a Summer Evening design.

Summer tributes begin on Friday, May 16 with Good Vibrations: A Celebration of the Beach Boys. This is followed a few weeks later by What the World Needs Now: A Tribute to Burt Bacharach. Don’t walk on by this chance to experience some of your favorite songs on Friday, June 6.

For the folkies among us, MacDougal Street West presents: A Peter, Paul, and Mary Experience takes us to Greenwich Village for the finger-snapping bohemian vibrations of the early ‘60s on June 20. Just a few weeks later brings us Photographs and Memories: Celebrating the Music of Jim Croce. On August 1, one of the most significant storytellers in ‘70s song is remembered for his heartrending lyrics.

If you are drawn to dancing, the Hardscrabble Road band can drive you there. They perform on May 23 in the first of the summer dances. Father’s Day sees the Jukebox Junqies and a delicious Sonoran BBQ spread at Canoa Hills poolside on

June 14. Johnnie and the Rumblers invite you to dance the night away on June 27. For our swing afficionados, the Wholly Cats Swing Club bring the upbeat jiving to life on July 25.

Love a bit of the grape? The Wine & Design: Bath Bomb Making Event frees your imagination to design a little selfcare for yourself or friends. And, why not invite those friends to join you on a couple of wine tours? Three Willcox wineries on June 30 and three Sonoita wineries on August 14 allow you to make your own Grape Escape.

Cool off with free Pool Flicks at Madera Vista. Kicking off at dusk if weather permits, Mamma Mia! shows on June 5 and Thelma gets her revenge on June 26.

Rounding out the summer entertainment are a couple of fun concerts in the American tradition. Green Valley Summer Big Band sounds off on August 6, and Pick & Holler presents A Lively Night of Americana on August 16 with the twang you crave.

In between planned outings, why not try some drop-in activities? Del Sol Clubhouse is a welcoming drop-in space with TVs, billiards, darts, foosball, a café, and video games. However, all GVR centers welcome drop-ins from aquatics and water aerobics to volleyball. Check the new spring/ summer catalog or GVRec.org for times. You can also view weekly reservation schedules beside the room doors—if there’s nothing scheduled, feel free to drop in.

Ensuring a faster, safer border crossing

To make your trip as smooth as possible, we ask Rocky Point passengers to provide a copy of their passport when registering for their trip. This helps both Mexico and the United States work together to keep the border secure and efficient. By sending your passport details to the authorities ahead of time, we help reduce wait times at the border by at least 50%, sometimes even more. It’s a simple step that helps everyone get where they’re going faster.

Letter from the President

Members, I’m excited to represent you as the GVR Board President this year, and would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Marge Garneau for her exemplary leadership over the past two years.

Since our CEO Scott Somers joined GVR in 2021, we have achieved a great deal. We’ve seen the expansion of several clubs, along with significant facility improvements, including the addition of the 1989 Bake House at Del Sol Clubhouse. None of this would have been possible without our dedicated and talented staff.

Green Valley has experienced a slowdown in home sales in the last couple of years, and this affects GVR’s budget and ability to accomplish as many projects as hoped. We anticipate that this year may have a slow start and will continue to monitor market trends and adjust accordingly.

We are always looking for members to join our committees. Even if you are unable to participate in a committee this year, we encourage you to attend committee meetings, Board work sessions, and Board regular meetings to share your valuable input. Meeting times and locations are posted in the weekly eblast, the monthly GVR Now!, and on the GVR Website calendar found on the homepage.

Help us help you—that’s what we’re here for.

If you’re just starting out, try a free 30-minute personal training introduction or a complimentary fitness center orientation. Contact fitness coordinator Lee Smith at LeeS@GVRec.org to sign up.

Want to get away for a few days? Consider joining an experienced tour guide on an exotic trip to Puerto Peñasco, Mexico, also known as Rocky Point, from June 3–6. Visit the Old Port, enjoy temperatures more moderate than Arizona in June, gamble, purchase fresh seafood, and, shall we say it, just relax.

Maybe you have a hard time relaxing. Could an evening, weekend, or drop-in class be the answer? From Acrylic Painting for Beginners to Complimentary Yoga, GVR offers 200 leisure education options to fit your speed and lifestyle. Stay in the classroom and out of the heat.

With so many ways to stay active, entertained, and connected, GVR’s summer lineup truly has something for all members. This season is packed with opportunities to make memories, so grab your calendar, rally some friends, and dive into a summer of fun, relaxation, and adventure.

For details on any of GVR’s events or to sign up for classes, fitness workouts, or to buy tickets; go to GVRec.org, call customer service at 520-625-0288, or visit the West Center Box Office at 1111 S GVR Drive, Monday–Friday, 8am–4pm.

Summer Fitness Safety Tips

STAY HYDRATED!

Bring water to your workouts.

When it comes to staying active during the summer, safety is key. The warmer weather can put extra strain on your body, so it’s important to take a few precautions to be healthy and comfortable.

Get Away to Rocky Point: June 3–June 6

Email MariluG@GVRec.org to schedule your in-person ticket appointment.

Enjoy coastal temperatures in Puerto Peñasco, Mexico during a three-night beach resort stay with special pricing for GVR members. Relax on the waterfront, explore the casino, or join a guided tour for dining, shopping, and sightseeing in the Old Port. Rates per person:

Ocean View: $920 (Single), $560 (Double)

Standard Room: $800 (Single), $500 (Double) Rates cover transportation, lodging, breakfasts, and guide services.

WE’RE SO CLOSE—ONLY EIGHT ROOMS TO GO!

Stay hydrated! Drink plenty of water before, during, and after workouts to help prevent dehydration. Early mornings or late evenings are often the best times for outdoor activities, as temperatures tend to be cooler.

Wear lightweight, breathable clothing to allow your body to cool down more easily. Pay attention to warning signs; if you feel dizzy, lightheaded, or overly fatigued, take a break.

GVR offers six air-conditioned fitness centers, an indoor walking track at Canoa Hills, and several pools to keep members comfortable during summer workouts. Please visit GVRec.org for locations and hours.
