GVR wishes to begin a program related to video gaming and virtual reality. Are you a ‘gamer’ interested in sharing your skills? Do you own and utilize a Meta Quest virtual reality system? Please contact Steve Kindred at stevek@gvrec.org—he’s waiting to hear about your ideas.

Fortunately, the leisure education program has room to grow. Multiple members have asked for more classes related to nutrition, sign language, oil painting, karaoke, astronomy, and leather crafting. One student replied to the class survey with a request for more intellectually stimulating classes… because… you have a wealth of retired academics here who would love to teach and be students again. Are you interested in spending a few hours each week in the classroom sharing your skills and making a bit of money? If so, please reach out to Steve Kindred at stevek@gvrec.org.

LEISURE EDUCATION: Personal Arts Training & Crafts

Personal Training Personal training is available in various packages from contracted trainers. All trainers are certified to help members develop a personalized program to pursue their goals. For more information about personal training, email LeeS@GVREC.org. GVR offers several levels of fitness training to help members get the most out of their fitness center experience. 1. Try a complimentary 30-minute personal training consultation with a GVR Personal Trainer. Consultations are offered to those who wish to have a personalized fitness program designed for their goals and any medical needs. Contact GVR’s Fitness Coordinator (LeeS@gvrec. org) to discuss your goals and be assigned to one of the trainers for your consultation. 2. Attend a free movement assessment in order to identify potential muscle imbalances surrounding a joint. These alterations can lead to increased stress on the tissue of the joint and lead to eventual injury. The goal is to identify any potential overactive and under active muscles, and create a corrective plan utilizing a corrective exercise continuum. 3. Train with one of our certified personal trainers. GVR contracts with five certified personal trainers to assist members in pursuing their fitness goals. A variety of personal training packages are available: •

Introductory Personal Training package—$129 Two one-hour appointments to design an individualized cardio and resistance training exercise plan

One-on-one training 60-minute sessions • Four sessions—$240 • Ten sessions—$495 30-minute sessions • Eight sessions—$270 • Twenty sessions—$600

Small group training sessions are also available with a ratio of one trainer to up to six people

Buddy Training (two person, max) Why not have a little fun while getting into shape? Buddy training adds the benefit of keeping each other accountable while increasing motivation and support. Challenging yourself can be hard on your own so why not add some friendly competition with a friend? • 60-minute session: $45 per person • Four 60-minute sessions: $320 ($40 session per person)

4. New! GVR offers Boxing Skills Training at the Desert Hills Boxing Gym. Boxing training will build fitness, strength, and coordination. This is a great cardio workout with some strength exercises built into each session. Lizetta has fifteen years of experience as a group fitness instructor for cardio kick boxing, boxing, and MMA/TRX. •

Small Group Boxing Training 4-8 people Tuesday & Thursday 10:00am–10:45am $120 2x/week for four weeks

Individual Boxing Training (by appointment) $35 Individual 30-minute session $240 Individual (eight sessions)

Buddy Boxing Training (by appointment) Maximum two people One 45-minute session ($30 per person)

Email GVR Fitness Coordinator Lee (LeeS@gvrec.org) to arrange a session with GVR’s newest fitness trainer, Lizetta Smith (on cover page of this section).

New Fitness Opportunity The larger room in the old fitness center at Desert Hills is now open as a boxing gym. This room is subject to reservation for classes and small group training, but is otherwise available for any member to use from 5:30am–9pm. Bring your own gloves and wraps to enjoy a variety of heavy bags, speed bags, battle ropes, and more.

Senior Fitness: Program Design $129 Program Design is aimed at members who want to learn to train on their own, but want guidance to move in the right direction safely and effectively. Unfortunately, our bodies change with age, and this can have an impact on our function and mobility. Range of motion, balance, coordination and muscle strength can deteriorate over time. For $129, you receive two, one-hour consultations that will set you up to execute a six-week, individualized training plan on your own. The consultations include: • complete assessment • prime and prep warm-up • corrective exercise strategies (as needed) • strength training prescription, and • cardio prescription Participants will be walked through the details of the program and provided with appropriate form, reps, tempo, sets, and rest periods. The workout schedule is in six-week cycles and based on individual preferences: two-day splits, threeday splits, four-day splits. The goal is to have members become confident and self-sufficient in their quest to reach personal goals. For information, please contact Lee Smith at lees@gvrec.org.
