Scrapes and Cuts
DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I have an adventurous Shorthaired Pointer named “Gordie” who loves running through the woods behind my home while I walk behind him. He occasionally comes back with scrapes and cuts. I want to share with your readers how I take care of his minor injuries, and when a vet visit is necessary.
Most of the time, Gordie’s scrapes are very minor. I always check him when we get back to the house, because he can easily pick up ticks, too. I remove any clinging ticks and kill them right away. I check the pads under his paws, and run my hand along his coat to remove burrs. If he has a scrape on his side or paw, I clean it with warm water, disinfect it and put some antibiotic ointment on it. If it’s a place where he can scratch or lick, I cover it with a gauze bandage for a couple of days.
Last month, Gordie limped over to me with a deep laceration on his left front paw pad. Fortunately, we weren’t far from home. I carried him inside and gently looked at the injury. It wasn’t bleeding too badly, but the cut was very deep, and trying to clean it was very painful for him. This time, we had to see the vet. I wrapped his paw in gauze to protect it and off we went. The vet stitched him up, and Gordie has to wear a lampshade collar for the next week or so to let it heal.

A New Internet Scam
I’d thought I could identify an internet scam when it showed up, but there’s a new one out now. It’s slick and potentially dangerous if you fall for it. It’s called the CAPTCHA scam. CAPTCHA stands for “completely automated public turing test to tell computers and humans apart.” They are those annoying interruptions when you’re trying to access a webpage. You typically have to click a box to prove you’re not a robot.Then you have to type in the skewed letters on the screen and click all the parts of the streetlight, or car or bus or whatever the image is. All this before it allows you to go to the page you’re trying to see.
The newest scam is that these CAPTCHAs are spreading malware in your computer with every step.
This is a sneaky scam because we’ve been lulled into complacency about those CAPTCHA verification tests, and we might tend to just click on it to get through it. Things are different now. If you come across a CAPTCHA, check the address of the webpage by looking for “https” to be sure that little “s” is present.
Here’s how the scams work:
You might be instructed to download a file or to press certain keys. Or, after completing the first step, you might end up on a fake webpage that looks a lot like the one you were trying to get to.
Once you get through the steps, malware is installed on your computer without you knowing, and its job is to hunt for personal information on your machine.
If you suddenly get a CAPTCHA popping up when you don’t expect it, back out of the page. Don’t go there.
Even if you’re sure you’re safe, don’t download anything that a CAPTCHA steers you to.
And as always, keep good virus protection on your computer.

Being Insistent About a Scan Saves the Life Of a Cancer Patient
DEAR DR. ROACH: About 12 years ago, I had a scan done to look for the cause of a problem that I was having for many months: pain in my abdomen and vomiting. (It turned out to be Barrett’s esophagus, which was found with a scope.) Fortunately for me, I read the report from the scan. The report said there was a spot on my kidney that ought to be checked in a year. I was very busy at the time, and my doctor retired, so I had to find another one.
Five years went by, and one day during a routine visit with my doctor, I remembered the report and asked my new doctor for another scan. She said she couldn’t order a scan without a reason. I then told her about the report from five years ago, but she did a cursory look at my papers and said she could not find it. I asked her to keep looking. She looked again, found it, then ordered a scan.
This move saved my life. The scan showed something larger than before. I went to Johns Hopkins Hospital and met a very good doctor who told me there was an 80% chance that I had cancer, and we should forgo a biopsy and remove it. He did this, and the cancer was fully contained. I didn’t have to do chemotherapy.
It has now been five years with yearly scans and no problems in my kidney. Please encourage people to read their reports. -- F.B.

FINDING THE MUSIC IN THE WORDS: The Poetic Journey of David Michael Nixon

Poetry has rarely been the most lucrative of callings— but for David Michael Nixon, it’s been a lifelong one. Born in Batavia and raised in Lockport from the age of three, Nixon’s love for verse began in 11th grade, when a school project on drones along the Mohawk River called for three poems. His English teacher, James Ashcra , praised the work—even if he admitted poetry wasn’t his strong suit. at moment, Nixon says, sparked something irreversible. “I decided I’d be a poet,” he recalls. “I didn’t realize how unlikely I was to make a living on it.”
Still, he never looked back, saying, “I write because I like readingandwritingpoetry.It’sawaytotrytofindoutthings— and to experience the art of it.” He has written thousands of poems, revised hundreds, and published chapbooks and full-length collections, with countless pieces appearing in journals and magazines across genres and locales. Nixon’s work spans a wide range of styles: rhymed and metered verse, syllabic forms, free verse, and hybrids in between. He says some poems begin with a formal structure in mind while others grow organically from a phrase or an inspired rhythm. A “quick writer,” Nixon prefers the “initial writing,” when inspiration strikes and an idea flows. When something works well in initial writing, he doesn’t like to revise much. However, as he’s grown, he’s come to accept the need for revision, saying, “Maybe I’m not as wildly inspired as I once was or maybe my standards are just higher and I think it has to be better.” However, he admits and advises, “If
you set the bar too high, you might not achieve anything.” It’s a balance.
For Nixon, sound plays a central role—creating “music in the words without being music”—a kind of sonic architecture that grounds his work. But the meaning, point of view, and imagery always remain essential. He says it’s sometimes hard to know what may register with listeners, but “One of the things I’m best at is sound, and a poem has to work on the page and out loud.”
Over the years, Nixon has learned from a wide array of poetic voices, drawing inspiration and mentorship from poets especially across the Western NY area. SUNY Brockport workshops have le a particularly lasting impression, as did the many informal poetry circles he’s joined over the years.
He’s been an active member of Western New York’s vibrant poetry scene, from Just Poets in Rochester and Sea of Coffee Open Mics in Geneva to the long-running Poet’s eater in Hornell. e region, he says, boasts a “strong and varied poetry scene,” with spaces like Writers & Books, Poetry Central, and the Dove Block Cultural Center offering consistent platforms for poets.

Nixon’s poems frequently involve themes of peace and justice, family, death, religion, nature, and poetry itself. He says, “Any topic might be possible, but I o en write about what forms the just—what makes a worldview.” His work is grounded in an ethos of love and non-violence, advising everyone to focus on self-reflection and identify what truly means the most to you, instead of being swayed by fads and trends.
Despite decades of poetic output, Nixon remains humble and deeply human in his approach. “Don’t get discouraged if you’re not the best in the world,” he advises younger writers. “I felt confident when I had no reason to be confident. But even the best poet in the world could get better.”
For aspiring poets, his advice is clear: write o en, revise with care, and share your work. “You have to be persistent. If you’re not serious about it, it’s easy to be discouraged,” especially in America, where poetry isn’t always revered, he says. But who will receive your work if you don’t get it out there?”
His belief in poetry—both as cra and compass—remains strong. “Poetry helps people explore life and enjoy the beauty of the art,” he says, adding that poetry brings beauty to everyday experience.
