Unfortunate But True So let me get this straight: I can buy ham in a plastic bag, bread in a plastic bag, milk in a plastic jug, napkins in plastic wrap, salad in a plastic tub, and ketchup & mustard in plastic bottles‚ but I can’t get a plastic bag to carry it all home because that’s what’s bad for the environment? This doesn’t make any sense at all.

Distracted Driver!

I am so very thankful to the kind man, lady & yellow lab in the red pickup truck towing a trailer in Hamlin! I was distracted—not from texting or talking on my cell, but mentally not focused on driving due to a recent death of a family member. I went through a stop sign & cut him off. He skillfully maneuvered his truck to avoid a collision. I apologized but want him to know how very thankful I was of his skill & kindness! I also want to make people aware of how we can become a “distracted” driver due to many circumstances. Please don’t drive if you physically or emotionally aren’t up to it. HAPPY Blessed HOLIDAYS to all, especially my hero in the red pickup truck!

Some folks may be immunodeficient because of cancer, or chemotherapy, and perhaps other conditions as well. These people are still friendly & peaceful; and challenged. Hands may transmit any virus, as well as Covid-19, bacteria, fungus, etc. It is now cold & flu season; please cover your sneezes and coughs but ideally not with your hands. And wearing a mask is also mandatory for some of us.

Thanks to the Hamlin Recreation for putting it on. What fun! There were many enjoyable things to do and we did them all! It’s bad neighboring to leave your dog chained in the front yard all hours of the day to bark menacingly at everyone and everything, even at 6:45am! It’s also animal cruelty. The poor thing is NEVER walked, just plopped out there to suffer in the sun, rain or snow. Grow up!

A focus on pets’ weight for the New Year DEAR PAW’S CORNER: I’ve made a resolution that I hope will resonate with many of your readers. My cat, “Gerard,” is 6 years old and has become very overweight. I can barely pick him up! Since October, I have been working with Gerard’s veterinarian to manage his weight, and things are turning around. I hope that this year, readers will focus on their pets’ whole health. Avoiding Medicare fraud Medicare is a pot of gold for scammers. There is a lot of money to be made by those who successfully commit fraud against seniors.

You, however, can stop them in their tracks by not falling for the scams.

Here are just a few of the scams: Genetic testing is a hot topic for those who want to be screened for a variety of potential illnesses. If you get a call offering genetic testing (or even at a booth at a senior fair), don’t believe the scammer who says that Medicare will pay for it, and that all you need to do is provide your Medicare number. Never give that number out! The only legitimate way Medicare will pay for genetic testing is if your doctor thinks it’s medically necessary and orders it.

Even your medical provider shouldn’t be completely trusted.

When you receive your Medicare Summary Notice showing what was billed and what Medicare paid, look closely at it. Check the dates and services to be sure that you really did receive those services. While errors could be honest mistakes, maybe they’re not. Call your provider and ask them to send you an itemized bill so you can see how they came up with their numbers and to send a corrected bill to Medicare. If they don’t, or if you suspect fraud, report it. Call Medicare at 800-MEDICARE (800-633-4227).

To learn more, see the Senior Medicare Patrol (877-808-2468) whose job is to ferret out Medicare fraud. Look for them at smpresource.org. Don’t miss the Consequences to Beneficiaries section of the website. The health impacts of fraud are scary: misinformation in our files, incorrect lab results and more. As more people work remotely, electricians and safety advocates are warning that various missteps may be putting people at unnecessary risk of fire and other unsafe conditions. Electrical equipment is necessary to run home offices just like it is traditional offices. Some people may find they have a shortage of electrical outlets to power their devices, and as a result they may turn to extension cords or power strips. While that may seem like an easy fix, it is easy to inadvertently overload outlets and circuits by connecting more than one power strip or extension cord together in a practice known as “daisy chaining.”

According to the U.S. Office of Compliance, using a daisy chain in the workplace violates the National Electrical Code as well as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s rules. While it may not break code at home, overloading any outlets increases risk for fire. The National Fire Protection Association indicates that more than 45,000 residential fires are started each year due to electrical failure and malfunction. Overload causes products to overheat, and that can spark fires in the power cords themselves or inside the wall where electrical lines are hidden.

Craft, Community, and Good Causes B Y S O P H I A KO VAT C H

Quilting has a long American tradition, stretching back to families traveling westward who would turn their fabric scraps into blankets that were both decorative and warm. Today, quilting lives on in groups like the Perinton Quilt Guild, a community of women who have gathered together to share their passion for the fabric craft for 50 years.

Sibby Falk has been President of the Perinton Quilt Guild for the past five years. She coordinates guest speakers and demonstrations for each of the Guild’s twenty meetings every year and oversees the general logistics of the group and the biannual quilt show. Around 60 people attend each meeting to learn about quilting and share their knowledge and work with each other. A meeting program may include a demonstration of a new quilting technique or a guest speaker with expertise in quilting traditions like spirit quilts or treaty cloth.

Each gathering also features a show-and-tell portion, where members can share what they’ve been working on since they last met.

In addition to their personal quilting projects, the Guild works together to create quilts for good causes. They’ve made baby quilts for Strong Hospital’s NICU, surgical caps and covers for pediatrics wards, and cat beds for Lollypop Farm.

Every other year, the Guild hosts its own quilt show, a daylong affair featuring everything members have created since the previous show. Rather than being judged by a panel of experts, visitors to the quilt show get to vote on their favorites. The most recent quilt show in May 2025 featured over 250 quilts created by the Guild’s about 100 members.

For each quilt show, Guild members work together to create a collaborative quilt that’s raffled off to support local charities. A special committee decides on the design, and members contribute individual blocks according to an agreed-upon pattern and color scheme. Another group pieces the blocks together, and one person completes the final step of adding batting and backing.

pictures on one side and Halloween images on the other, and he provided illustrations himself. A granddaughter imagined a magical-themed quilt adorned with six fairies.

Even Falk’s son has made requests, saying he wants her to make a whole cupboard of king-size quilts for him, so he never has to worry if one wears out.

Her family’s ideas ensure Falk will never run out of quilting projects, and she doesn’t mind. “Everyone I love is sleeping under a quilt I made for them,” she says. “Even though they are grown, I am still keeping them warm.”

Even though Falk and many of her fellow quilters have been practicing the craft for decades, they always find something new to try. She says, “One of the things I love about quilting is how wide it is. There are so many techniques you never get bored.” In addition to collecting techniques, quilters are notorious collectors of fabric scraps, which they call their “stash.” Falk says her stash consists of nearly twenty plastic totes filled with fabric, sorted by color.

The Perinton Quilt Guild has always been as much about community as it is about quilting itself. The group started in 1975 when a group of friends met at a quilting class but didn’t want to split up when it ended, Falk says. The first meetings at a small building in Fairport had just a few members, but gradually the Guild grew to its 100+ members today.

Though Falk and many Guild members are prolific quilters, experience with quilting is not necessary to join. “What’s nice about our group is we have all level of abilities,” Falk says. “We have brand-new learners as well as really incredible artists.” All are welcome to join in and learn how to quilt.

The Perinton Quilt Guild meets on the first and third Mondays of the month from September to June at the Perinton Community Center. Annual dues are $25.

“We have very loyal members,” Falk says. “And we have members where [the Guild is] a highlight of their week.”

Many Guild members are retired and/or widowed, and quilting offers not just a hobby to pass the time, but a community to learn and share with. “Finding this vocation or passion later in life in really fulfilling,” Falk says. Falk herself was a member of the Guild back in the ‘80s, and rejoined about ten years ago, when all her children were grown. In returning to the Guild, she’s found not only an outlet for the craft she loves but also good people to share it with. She says, “The thing I love most about my Guild and why I love being president is we don’t have any grumpy people. Quilters seem to generally be pretty kind.”

Falk’s personal quilting projects are often art quilts, meant to be hung on the wall rather than used as bedding. She makes plenty of regular quilts, though, often taking requests from her family. She works on bringing her grandchildren’s ideas to life in fabric they can snuggle under every night.

Pulmonary Nodules Appear, Leading To Concern About CANCER DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 76-year-old woman in what I thought was excellent health. On a recent coronary calcium CT scan that was ordered because of my age and slightly elevated cholesterol, an incidental finding was described in the report as “innumerable, tiny noncalcified pulmonary nodules bilaterally.” The largest of these is in the “left lower lobe with multiple additional 2- to 4-mm nodules,” and they recommended “clinical correlation and a consideration of a dedicated chest CT.” I found the report quite scary, especially considering my mother and grandfather died of lung cancer (although they were smokers and I never smoked). My primary physician has ordered the chest CT but wants to wait four weeks. She says that the nodules could be caused by inflammation or infection and might resolve on their own.

My fear is that they’re actually lung cancer and waiting four weeks might be problematic, not to mention extremely anxiety-producing. I would appreciate your input. -- M.S. ANSWER: I certainly understand why you are concerned about lung cancer given your family history, but primary lung cancer is very unlikely. Since there are so many of these tiny nodules, I agree with your doctor that these are highly unlikely to be lung cancer, which is generally only a single nodule.

Your doctor is correct that there are inflammatory and infectious conditions that can cause a similar appearance on a chest CT. Some of these infections are serious (including tuberculosis), but people generally have symptoms. So, I think this is unlikely. Exposure to lung toxins, especially silicosis and asbestosis, are generally occupational, but they are another potential cause.

Some cancers can spread to the lungs. While the appearance of nodules on a CT scan in a person with no known cancer would be unusual, if the CT scan in four weeks shows that the nodules are enlarging, then this would be concerning.

Getting another scan in less than four weeks might not be enough time to see a change.

I am sorry about the unavoidable anxiety in waiting for the scan, but it’s likely that the scan won’t show a change and you will be able to stop worrying.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was experiencing hoarseness while taking ibuprofen. A friend got intestinal bleeding due to taking it. My doctor gave me 7.5 mg of meloxicam daily, but I’m not sure it’s OK for long periods of time. I’m 73 with osteoarthritis and osteopenia.

I exercise daily and eat a healthy diet, and I have high blood pressure that is controlled with losartan and amlodipine. -- T.M.H. ANSWER: Ibuprofen is generally a safe drug, but it does have the potential for side effects -- some of them being serious.

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a serious one, and it is most common in older women. I would not try a second nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (NSAID) like meloxicam in a person who has a history of serious bleeding with any other similar drug.

Hoarseness could be due to an allergy, due to direct irritation of ibuprofen on the throat, or from the worsening of acid reflux, which can cause hoarseness if acid gets all the way into the throat.

Meloxicam is also an NSAID but is chemically in a different class from ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil and others) or naproxen (Aleve and others), which are closely related. It’s reasonable to give it a try, but if it causes hoarseness again, then an NSAID probably isn’t a good choice for your arthritis. You could consider acetaminophen (Tylenol) or topical NSAIDs, which do not get absorbed enough to cause an increased bleeding risk.
